Division 8 (Coach: Phil Martin) Sponsored by:MichelsWarrenPublicRelations & Smith Motor Company & Lion Nathan

Sturt 9 Port Adelaide 10 at Sturt

Off the back of our thrilling one run victory over the top-placed Glenelg in the semi-final, we were rapt to be up against our arch rivals Port Adelaide in the Grand Final at Norman Reserve.

We always have great games against these guys and this time was no different. In the end, we fell just one run short - but the scoreboard only told part of the story.

With Jordan 'Skinny' Wayne on the mound, we felt we had a great chance. Skinny has been huge for us all year and he was fantastic again against a line-up of very strong hitters. The outfield of Jake 'Gibbo' Gibson, Jules 'JP' Potiki and coach Phil 'Philthy' Martin were kept busy but we were able to hold them to a couple of runs in the first inning.

Gibbo plated coach Martin to get us on the board, but they then started to get on top of us a little, pushing into a lead. With Port Adelaide batting and with no-one out and men on 2nd and 3rd, something needed to be done.

Enter bench coach Andrew 'AJ' Johnston. With Dan '88' Oates a hoover as always at first, AJ moved Kingsley 'Butterball' Turner across to second, Jayke 'Ice' Wayne to third and Jess 'Lemo' Lemon to short - just to shake things up and try to induce a change in momentum.

And what a move it was.

In a play of pure poetry, Lemo snared a line drive, raced to the bag to double off the runner trying to get back to second and then - as calm as you like - pinged a strike to Justin 'JR' Ranford at the plate to tag the guy trying to score. It was that most rare of things - a TRIPLE PLAY - and we rushed into the dug out with the home crowd going mad.

We started to get some momentum back our way with the likes of Oates (3 hits) and Potiki (5 for 5) keeping the pressure on their pitching. Gibbo came on in the top of the 7th to hold Port to two runs, meaning we were 10-5 down going into the bottom of the last with it all to play for.

'Butterball' Turner and Ditmar 'Galloping' Guehrer both got on, JR and Lemo flashed the bat, JP got another hit and when Philthy brought home two with a flare into centre, we were within a run of pushing the game into extra innings.

However, the Port defence had been good all day and, with two out and a man on third, they made the play they needed to end the game at 10-9.

We were all gutted to have come so close, but proud of the way we had played all season. We had a huge amount of fun as a team and the final was a great game of baseball that could easily have gone our way.

As ever, huge thanks to Heather Turner for scoring for us all season - accurately, enthusiastically and dependably. Thanks also to those who helped umpire our games throughout the season and to Dave Lee for a great diamond.

And to everyone who came out to watch on Saturday, sorry we couldn't quite nail it - but we'll be back next year!

Hits: Lemon 2 (1 RBI and a triple play), Potiki 5 (2), Martin 2 (3), Gibson 1 (1), Oates 3, Jayke 1, Turner 1, Guehrer 1, Ranford 2
Pitching: Jordan 30 batters, 25/57 4Ks; Gibson 5 batters, 12/9 2Ks
