Feedback on Norman Reserve Consultation January 2013

Thank you to everyone who attended the Mitcham Council consultation session at Norman Reserve. You can view photos of the event on the front page of our website.

Overall it was very pleasing to see not only a great turn out of our players from Tee Ball through to Seniors, but also the number of residents who attended the session and gave very strong support for the continuation of baseball on Norman Reserve. I was asked a number of times why was the lease only for a maximum of five years as some of the residents I spoke to wanted certainty about our continued presence at the ground! This is great vote of confidence in the work our club does, particularly David Lee in keeping the grounds in pristine condition!

However this is no time for resting on our laurels!!! Please refer to my advice from last night on how you personally can make a difference and exercise your democratic right to have a say!

I am particularly pleased with the at time of wrting that there are 35 responses on Adelaide Now. Please do not stop! Have your say!

I also had numerous requests from club members who are business owners for copies of the Fact Sheet so they can distribute in their business! A big thank you to Phil Martin from MichelsWarrenPublicRelations for his tireless work in handling all of the media and producing this outstanding Fact Sheet for us!

We ran out of copies tonight at the consultation session as they were so popular! We are doing another print run tomorrow and they will be at the club tomorrow night. However if you would like to reserve copies please email me with the number you require!!

Your support required for media and consult session!

As you are aware the Mitcham Council will be holding a Community Consultation session at Norman Reserve on Wednesday 30th January, commencing at 6.00 pm. Your attendance is vital to show support for our club!

The Sturt Baseball Club will be handing out a Fact Sheet at the session, but I would encourage you to download it and ensure that you are clear on all the facts and please give it to your friends and neighbors!

At our Division 1 twilight game tonight a number of members asked me what is the alternative ground if we are not allowed to play at Norman Reserve? I explained to them that despite five years of exhaustive investigation and working with Council and State Government at this point there is no alternative!!!!

Please do not think someone else will support the club and you don't need to!!

If you want Sturt to continue to play baseball at Norman Reserve there are a number of personal actions you can take to ensure that through this consultation process your views are taken into consideration.

These actions include:

1. completing the Mitcham Council Online Survey. Please refer to my previous advice if you require assistance in knowing how to complete the survey!

2. ensuring your friends and neighbours are aware of the issues- denying children and young people to play baseball at Norman Reserve is a community issue that every citizen should carefully consider, especially given the burgeoning issue of obesity in our community!

3. stand up and be counted and attend the Council's Community Consultation session at Norman Reserve on Wednesday night.

4. please make a comment on the latest story about our Club on Adelaide Now. The power of social media is very strong these days and I would very strongly encourage you to make a comment in the comments section of this story.

5.5 AA Sports show announcers Rowie and Cornsie mentioned our plight just before the 5.30 news tonight, during their program which runs from 4-7 pm. Again I would encourage you to email them to express your support for our club. The last time we were in this situation our members rallied and in those day the KG and Cornsie program had the most emails and texts on anyone subject thanks to the support of our members. Make your voice heard call (phone 5AA on 8223 0000), email or text (19991395) the program!!

Sturt 8 Northern Districts 2 at Northern Districts

Another important win on the board to make us 10-3 on the season and in good form heading into the finals - but the 8-2 scoreline only told part of the story from Saturday's game at Northern Districts.

In the first three Northern Districts innings, we turned three double plays - and a couple were just pure poetry.

Whenever Jayke 'Bruce' Wayne got into any strife on the mound, the infield was there to back him up. Firstly Jess 'Lemo' Lemon made an unassisted DP at short (taking a catch and stepping on second to strand the man running to third), then took another catch deep in the hole before firing a missile to Ben 'Roger' Moore at first to strand a runner and then combined with Josh 'Cliffy' Clifford at second for a sublime 4-6-3 in the third. If the ball ever got over the infield, it was quickly snaffled by Dave 'Hocko' Hocking, Jules 'Kiwi' Potiki and Ditmar 'Galloping' Guehrer.

Lemo couldn't stay out of the game. He went 4-5 at the plate including a hard-run triple and then took to the mound to put the icing on a great game. Kingsley 'Sick Note' Turner took over from Rich 'Elvis' Carter at the hot corner and made a great play to get a runner going home, while coach Phil 'Philty' Martin did the same after taking over from Lemo at short.

The big Kiwi managed to put some extra heat into the game with a baserunning altercation with their first baseman, but it was just good, clean baseball and the sort of play that will stand us in good stead come finals time.

Justin 'JR' Ranford was absolutely flawless behind the plate with some fantastic picks as the pitchers mixed things up to keep the batters guessing. Bruce finished with 3 Ks from his 60 pitches while Lemo had 5 Ks from 57. Both our pitchers were fantastic in the absence of the Splendid Splinter.

Thanks again to Heather for scoring. Next week it's Glenelg at home - a big one!

Sturt 13 defeated Adelaide 12

At training last Wednesday it looked a lot like we had forgotten much about baseball over the Christmas break so it was with some trepidation that we approached our first game back!

At least we had the privilege of playing at Norman reserve and it was beautiful conditions for the game. Conor had two strike outs after the first two batters but then Adelaide showed us that they had come to play. Solid hits from the next four batters saw three runs on the board before Conor finished the innings as he began with another K - all three outs to the pitcher. We did not trouble the scoreboard in our first bat with three K's to good pitching with our boys not reading the curve ball at all.

Conor gave us most of the second innings on the mound and again Adelaide was aggressive with the bat and base running to collect another four runs. Our second at bat was a 7 innings recovery but mostly due to erratic pitching with Riley the ball magnet again HPB and 5 consecutive base on balls followed by a cracking hit to centre field by Stew to see our seven runs. It was straight back into the action for Stew who having closed the second innings was back to the mound for our third defensive turn. It was the story of the day with good accurate pitching by Stew but Adelaide finding the holes in the field to clock up four more runs.

With the opposition's pitching depth being challenged we started to get more bat on ball with hits to Stew, Tyrese, Eli and Brandon seeing us level the score at 11-11. Onto the mound under the pressure of the tied game and last innings came Tyrese. Despite the pressure (or perhaps as a consequence) he pitched very well getting two K's and keeping the opposition to 1 run. All up to our boys to hit for a win. As with the second at bat we were helped by the opposition with 3 base on balls and Riley hit by pitch YET AGAIN and a good hit by Conor to see us score the two runs needed for the win. Overall it was a credit to the boys that they hung in for the win with the opposition scoring more hits than us. Again we had no errors in the field, accurate pitching from the three boys on the mound (all above 50% strike rate) and good batting when we needed it. Well done to Nik who filled in behind the plate for us in the second half and to Harrison Knuckey for playing half a game for us.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach:John McClure)  Sponsored by: Premier Trailers

Despite losing this was one of the teams' better games for the season. Given we were smashed in our last outing the effort the attitude was first class and the score wasn't a true reflection of how close the game was. After 3 tight innings we trailed 2-1 and has become a bit of a habit we managed to concede 5 runs in the two final innings to lose 12-2.

A beautiful day at Glenelg greeted the team for the beginning of the second half of the season. The first innings saw both teams held scoreless by good pitching. What was interesting out of this was that we lost our first 3 batters in just 10 balls. It took us 19 to dig Glenelg out. I was really pleased with our aggression right from the word go. If the ball is there - hit it and that's what we tried to do. We managed 6 safe hits for the day with 2 base hits from Josh Wilson and Nick Borello and single hits to Sam Stewart, Aussie McClure, Jordan Abfalter and Louis Gava. Glenelg had 7 hits, we gave away 11 walks versus 5 but this was more of a reflection of the "go for it" mentality we are trying to drill into the team. It's a hitting zone not a strike zone and if it's there have a go. Just the one KC this week.

Aussie pitched his best game for the season and kept us in the game for the 3 innings he threw. 68 pitches for 35 strikes and 5K's in a very pleasing performance. He was well supported by his field with Kye Sellick at shortstop making some neat plays, Troy Hocking with an excellent outfield running catch and Mr. concentration at first base Oliver Crutchley was very tidy. Special mention to Louis for his first outing as catcher who did a good job and will get better with the experience.

Four games to go and we are not that "far off it". Just a few errors proved costly today and if we can eliminate these we will worry all the other sides. We need everyone at training to keep improving our skills.

Kensington 9 defeated Little League 2-Saints 4

A sunny day, great conditions for baseball at Flinders. After a slow start in ground preparations we were off. Kensington batted first and scored the maximum of 5. It didn't look good for us and the boys seemed tired. We batted for one, Josh Rycroft getting home. Second innings they scored 3 while we scored two. Rhys Bassett and Josh Rycroft. Our general fielding and batting wasn't up to our usual standard. The third inning we kept them to one but we were only able to get one ourselves (Rhys Bassett). They batted again and scored 5 but time was up and we reverted to the third innings score. Not a strong day for our pitching, too many errors in the field and while we got a couple of good hits generally we were swinging at some wayward deliveries and getting out too easily. On the positive base running showed improvement and excellent catching from Axel Andrews. We will need as a team to fire up for our next game to get back into the form we showed early in the season. Thanks to all the parents who just jumped in and helped organise while the managers were away.

Update on Community Consultation for Norman Reserve

As previously advised the future of the Sturt Baseball Club playing at Norman Reserve rests in your hands!

The Mitcham Council has arranged a community consultation at Norman Reserve on Wednesday 30 th January 2013 commencing at 6.00 pm.

Your attendance is vital to show support for our club!

The Mitcham Council has distributed flyers to nearby residents. The Sturt Baseball Club has also prepared a flyer which we will be distributing to nearby residents. Please print it out and hand out to anyone you think would be interested in attending!

There is also a Mitcham Council online survey which I urge each member of your family to complete!

The questionnaire has a glitch in it in relation to the lease arrangements for the clubrooms, however without starting the process again the Council have informed me that it cannot be readily changed.

I have been inundated with feedback on the confusing nature of the questionnaire!

If you are supportive of our club retaining the lease on the clubrooms then please answer yes to both the questions about a six (6) month and twelve (12) month lease.

I also provide below the club's suggested method of completion of the survey form, however please use the comments section to personalise your response as responses that look the same are simply discounted:

Grounds

The purpose of this section of the survey is to determine whether a licence is to be granted to the Sturt Baseball Club for the playing of sport on the W A Norman Reserve and the period of the licence.

1. Are you in favour of Sturt Baseball Club using the grounds of W A Norman Reserve?*

Yes

2. Are you in favour of a three (3) or five (5) year licence being granted to Sturt Baseball Club to use the grounds of W A Norman Reserve from 1 October to 31 March each year? (Please choose one option)*

Five (5) Year Licence

3. Are you in favour of additional fencing and netting to a height of 12 metres being constructed on W A Norman?*

Yes (this will allow the playing of senior baseball)

Comments:

Please personalise a comment in here- it is important that you say something about what the Norman Reserve either means to you now as an adult or for children what parents think about Norman Reserve for their child's development

Clubrooms

The purpose of this section of the survey is to determine whether a six (6) month or twelve (12) month lease is granted to Sturt Baseball Club for a period of either three (3) or five (5) years for use of the Council owned club facility located at W A Norman Reserve.

1. Are you in favour of the Council owned clubrooms at W A Norman Reserve being leased to Sturt Baseball Club for twelve (12) months of the year for a three (3) or five (5) year period? (Please choose one option.)*

Yes Five (5) Year Lease

2. Are you in favour of the clubrooms at W A Norman Reserve being leased to Sturt Baseball Club for six (6) months of the year from 1 October to 31 March for a period of three (3) or five (5) years? (Choose one option.)*

Yes Five (5) Year Lease

Comments

Comment something along the following lines:

I am totally supportive of a 12 month lease for a (5) five year period being granted to the Sturt Baseball Club for the use of the Clubrooms. I have also marked yes for a six month lease for five (5) years for the Sturt Baseball Club to use the Clubrooms to reinforce my absolute desire for Sturt Baseball Club to retain control of the Clubrooms which in fact Sturt Baseball Club members built all those years ago!

Arguably our best game of the season even though we went down 8-7.

We fell behind early in the game due to some sun struck out fielding and a few bleeders but to our credit we fought back and hung in there.

Matt Mulryan pitched another great game, Peter Turner was solid behind the dish, Brodie Syrus made some great plays at 3rd base and we even turned a double play.

We put great pressure on their fielders by staying focused in the box and being patient.

We nearly stole the game in the last dig only to be cut short by a line drive to their shortstop for the 3rd out after we scored 2 runs thanks to a long ball from Fame (I wanna live forever) Hill.

I keep telling the guys if you put the ball in play you never know what can happen.

Special thanks to Dale Martens, Dave Lee and Adrian (Fame) Hill for filling in and helping us field a team.

Thanks to Theresa and Heather for scoring too.

Good luck next week against Woodville at home lads, if you play with the same intensity as this game then we can chalk up another win.

Hits - Warrilow 4, Mulryan 2, Duffield, Holland, Turner, Martens, Syrus, Fahy 1

Sturt 0 lost Southern Districts 25

We travelled to Christies Beach to tackle the undefeated Southern Districts side.

We had the bare nine and a handful of our normal team. I would like to thank those members who did make it, especially the guys who filled in Josh Clifford, Craig Ottaway and Trent Small, Trent rushed down at the last minute to replace a late withdrawal.

The game verged on embarrassing and probably is the worst result I have been involved in with the Sturt Baseball Club. The opposition had a field day and made Southern Districts player Darren Ballard's 900th game a day to remember! Congratulations to him 900 games is a fair effort!

Division 6 (Coach: Wallace Long) Sponsored by: C2M Health

Saints 3 lost to Kensington 6.

Saturday we played away at Kensington. A win required to keep our finals hopes alive.

Our first innings saw four batters attend the plate for no runs.

In their first innings Dave Nicholas had good speed striking out 2 batters - no runs scored.

Our second innings started with Bones (Glenn McDonald) and Rat (Rick Trembath) hitting singles. With two outs and two runners on, Daisy (Chris Day) singles to bring in our first runs. Shrek (Ben Colyer) and Pop (Mark Burns) follow up and we score three.

With a few hits to the outfield in the next innings Kensington pick up four runs. Highlight of the innings for us was Bones' (Glenn McDonald) running backwards catch at short stop.

Kensington picked up one run in the next innings to lead 5 - 3.

No runs for us next innings.

Dave got his curve ball working and got two more strike outs in the next innings where Kensington added another run.

Rat replaced Dave and we kept them scoreless for the rest of the game.

Other than a double to Dave Nicholas we failed to register a hit after the second innings.

Ten of our outs were catches and on most occasions the Kensington players didn't need to move too far to make them. Of Dave Nicholas' four at bats three of them were caught deep in the outfield. A few of these hits ten feet either side of the fielder and it would have been a different score line.

Good defensive work by Daisy(Chris Day) at first, Shrek (Ben Colyer) catcher and Trent Small at third.

Aim now is to get some wins over the next few weeks and finish as high up the ladder as we can.

Hits: Burns (2), Day C, Colyer, Nicholas (double), McDonald, Trembath

Division 8 (Coach: Phil Martin) Sponsored by: MichelsWarrenPublicRelations

After a really solid effort against Port Adelaide at their place the week before, it was going to be important to back it up with a similar performance against Playford who are also in the hunt to play finals.

Jordan 'The Splendid Splinter' Wayne was in charge on the mound again, despite having injured his neck on a netball ring (one of the more unusual excuses we've heard this year) with Justin 'JR' Ranford catching. The Splinter pitched four innings with two Ks and only gave up four runs to the Pirates.

With Kingsley 'Sick Note' Turner injured again (apparently his ego had written some cheques his body decided it definitely could not cash playing Div 3 last week), it was up to Rich 'Elvis' Carter to man the hot corner, working with Phil 'Philthy' Martin, Jess 'Lemmo' Lemon and Ben 'Roger' Moore in the infield. Jayke 'Bruce' Wayne ran things in the outfield from centre, ably supported by Andrew 'AJ' Johnston and Jules 'Kiwi' Potiki.

After allowing them two runs in the first, we then put five on the board with good hitting putting pressure on their fielders. In fact, the Splinter led us off with a fantastic inside the park home run! (well, that's how we scored it in the dug out mate..!).

When Ditmar 'Galloping' Guehrer subbed for the injured AJ, his first AB was a stinging drive to centre field to add another couple of runs while Bruce Wayne smacked two doubles for the game, going 3 for 3.

Lemmo came on in relief (2Ks) to keep the Pirates marooned on four runs - however, with two down in the bottom of the fifth the game was still in the balance with only four runs in it. With Bruce on second, Dave 'Hocko' Hocking then scrambled through to first, Lemmo and then Philthy got on and we had a two-out rally going. By the end of the inning, we had piled on six runs before Playford managed to get that final out and the game was done and dusted at 14-4.

Thanks again to Heather for scoring and to Peter Tredrea for umpiring on a beautiful day at Sturt. Next week we're off to Northern Districts to keep the pressure on the top two teams.

Hits: Jordan Wayne 2, Lemon 1, Martin 1 (1 RBI), Moore 2 (1), Potiki 2 (1), Jayke Wayne 3 (2), Guehrer 1 (1)

Todays special, catch of the day, was it Snapper? No

Was it Flathead? No

Was it……..Kingsley Turner oh yeah….it sure was!

Well done for helping us out at 3rd base for the first half of the game and I will remember that catch for a long long time.

Now back to the game, yes we won and yes we played great.

This was a game we wanted to win and the boys played hard team baseball.

Matt Mulryan pitched the whole game and did another great job.

The Redsox got some early runs and were leading 4-1 after a few digs but that's where it ended for them apart from a couple of runs late in the game.

Apart from few early mishaps we backed him up well.

Our bats were talking all day, with Sam Duffield having a day out and collecting 4 hits and another walk as well as catching anything that came his way.

Pete Turner was solid behind the dish and collected a couple of late hits too.

Daniel Oates came in for Kingsley half way through the game and picked up 2 great lead off singles in the 5th and 6th innings, Adrian (Fame) Hill also came up with a ripper shot in the 5th innings after replacing Frenchie at first base.

We scored runs in 5 out of 6 innings, which was very pleasing.

Well done lads.

Special thanks to the wonderful Heather Turner for scoring, and Stephen French, Fame Hill, Daniel Oates and Darren French for doubling up after Div. 4

Hits - Duffield, Warrilow 4, P.Turner, D. French, Oates 2, Mulryan, Hill 1

Sturt 2 lost to Adelaide 7

Our first game back and Adelaide came to play.

We played ok, but couldn't string any hits together. Defensively we did well, making some good outs.

We welcomed Tyson Ottaway for his first senior game.

Hits: Bates- 2, Schutz, Hill, D French, Gooley, Baker, Oates, S French -1

Division 6 (Coach: Wallace Long) Sponsored by: C2M Health

After the game, whilst selecting best players the umpire was overheard to say 'How did you manage to win without any hits?'

On Saturday at home we managed to scrape together a 12-11 win against Glenelg.

Our sluggish start had us behind after the first dig. Jarrad started to Shrek with Reggie throwing to one batter. Rat however threw most of the game and did a good job keeping Glenelg to 4 runs whilst we put on 8 to get ahead.

Big contribution by the Small family. Jarrad 2 doubles. He also timed a jump at third to take a spectacular catch. Trent took a good grab in left and also made a good defensive play at an important time that kept a potential double to a single.

At lead off and with a BB, FC and a hit Smally was having a good day out. With the crowd appearing to lose interest in the game Smally stepped up to bat, hit the ball to third and whilst running to first he pulled a hamstring. Crowd engaged again and Saints win.

With Glenelg getting 12 hits to our 6, their errors allowed us to win this one. Needless to say we need to get our bats working over the final 6 rounds if we're going to have a chance at finals.

Thanks to Peter for umpiring and Jo for scoring.

Hits: Small J (2 x doubles), Small C, Lee D, McDonald G, Williams M.

Injuries: Small C (hamstring)

Division 8 (Coach: Phil Martin) Sponsored by: MichelsWarrenPublicRelations

Sturt 9 Defeated Port Adelaide 2

Sturt played a low-error game which helped keep Port to 2 runs. Jordan Wayne pitched a fine game until spelled by Jess Lemon who maintained the high standard.

The bats were working well and the scoreboard kept ticking over. Everyone contributed.

Hits to Justin (2) Jess (2) Josh (2) Ben (2) and singles to just about everyone else.

RBI's to Justin (3), Ben (2) and 1 apiece to Jordan, Josh, Jules and Ritchie.

It was good to have Josh Clifford back on board (returning from a broken hand) - he picked up where he left off with a good outfield catch and solid batting. Play of the day went to Jess Lemon who took a spectacular catch at shortstop - he had to make up a lot of ground backwards and took the catch at full stretch for "side away" depriving Port of early runs.

A high quality, enjoyable game.

Div 1 played Port Adelaide score 0-4

Unfortunately it wasn't our day with the Port pitchers dominating striking out 16 of our hitters.

Randy did his best throwing 6 innings allowing 4 runs but our bats did not stand the heat from the Port pitcher with some ordinary at bats which is something we have tried to keep in check all year.

We must be more discipline in the batters box if we are to make a push at the finals.

Hits: Macbeth, Faehse & Brebner-Russ.

Thanks to Jacko & Wrighty for racing down to the game after being involved with the Bite.

Good luck next week to all of the Sturt players representing their state and to the coaches and EO's travelling with the teams.

This Tuesday is a must win game against Adelaide starting at 6.15 we should be full strength and it would be great to see a full strength crowd as well.

Division 2 (Coach: Kris McArdle) Sponsored by: Pyper Leaker& Bicton Constructions Pty Ltd

Sturt 2 lost Pt Adelaide 3

B grade was back after a short break and we opened the game well with 2 hits from both Dutchy and Stu ; Dutchy scored on a wild throw. We really didn't capitalise in this dig as a missed signal turned into a double play to end the dig prematurely short. Sam smashed a nice double and the Jordan picked up a single to get our second run in the 6th, unfortunately that was the end of us troubling the score board. Stu was our best hitter of the day picking up 2 hits and Dutchy with a hit and two walks looked good. Base running let us down a bit today and we still need to work on getting signals right.

The D today was good with the pitchers throwing plenty of ground balls and the boys making most of the plays. Stu had a busy day at short, Pete Turner was solid at 3rd and Jordan made some great plays at 1st. We lead all day and with a 1 run lead all we needed was three outs to get the win. But to Ports credit they strung a couple of hits in the last and got the 2 runs. Matt Franke started and throw his 4 inns holding Port to just the one run in a solid outing. Packer had his longest outing of the year in relieve, pitching his 4 inns. Ben showed he still has plenty to offer this side on the mound, good outing mate.

Lads it was tough to take the loss this week but eliminating that last dig we looked the better team all day, we still have some work on base running with too many cheap outs on bases helping the opposition get out of the dig. Signals need to be understood and executed with confidence. Lets move on and get a win next sunday play with some aggression, confidence, purpose and enjoy it and we will stay in touch with the 6.

Hits: 2 - S. Crutchley, 1- Dutchy ( 2BB) , S. Hollis ( double ), J. McArdle( RBI )

Christmas Newsletter

Welcome to the Christmas edition of the Sturt Baseball Club Newsletter. On behalf of the club may I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2013.

We certainly enjoyed a warm Christmas party at the Club last night. Thanks to Phil Tindall who volunteered for the very hot job of cooking the BBQ and to our wonderful bar staff in Sonia and Rosanna who organised the salads etc. Despite the heat we were grateful for the wonderful air-conditioning in the club (thanks Peter and Janine Duffield from Bicton Constructions) which meant everyone could enjoy their meal in comfort. Unfortunately due to the heat Santa's sley overheated and he did not make an appearance, but I hear that he had already made appearances at the T Ball break up the week before.

Our Division 1 and 2 boys brought home wins in both games in what can only be described as oppressive conditions! Well done boys!

Next Saturday 29 December 2012 at Norwood Oval, there is the Baseball SA Showcase Round which promises to be great holiday family fun for just $2 entry for everyone including players, officials and spectators.

The line up of games is as follows:

2:30 PM Goodwood vs Sturt

5:00 PM GGCD vs Glenelg

7:30 PM Kensington vs Port Adelaide - Grand Final Rematch

BBQ and Beverages will be available to be purchased at the ground

Sturt 5 defeated Northern District 1

With the game shortened due to the heat we had to generate some runs early, and play good D. The boys held out Norths in the first with three outs and only 8 pitches use by Matt. Dutchy and Crutchley led off well and a nice sac bunt from Tom we had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Randy then cleaned the bases with a stand up double and we got the start we where looking for. The teams offence was disciplined and we managed to string some hits together at the right time to get the 5 runs. Defence was solid with no easy bags given to the opposition, Matt and Dan both did the job on the bump.

Good job lads the next two game are really important to set up the rest of the season.

Division 3 (Coach: Stan Warrilow) Sponsored by: Hattam McCarthy Reeves

Sturt 12 defeated Gawler 6

Winner, winner chicken dinner!!

We won, that's all!

Just kidding.

After what seemed like hours of travelling we finally made it out to Gawler and sucked up the fantastic atmosphere, dirt and plenty of dust.

We started strong by scoring 3 runs in the first dig but a miss read fly ball by big Max saw the Rangers level it up at 3 all.

A scoreless 2nd dig for both teams followed as we headed into the 3rd.

From then on we scored in every innings and ran out winners 12-6.

Matt Mulryan did a great job on the hill pitching the whole game and getting a pair of hits.

Big Max came back and took 2 great line drive catches and then threw to second base for two double plays.

Sam Hollis came up with the play of the day throwing out a runner at home just like he practiced on Thursday night at training and also took a diving catch.

Josh Tindall clutched up and got a timely hit to score a very important run, as well as playing a good game a shortstop.

Sam Duffield hit his first double for the year scoring 2 runs, great stuff.

A very pleasing way to finish off the year, well done lads.

A special thanks to Matt Mulryan, Tom Faehse, and Sam Hollis for coming out and doing a great job.

Thanks to Peter Duffield for scoring

Hits - Faehse 3, Hollis, Warrilow, Mulryan 2, Duffield, Syrus, Tindall 1

Division 4 (Coach: Darren French) Sponsored by: Wendy's Burnside

Sturt 15 defeated GGCD 3

This team is coming along nicely after a slow start and a few long winded games, things are starting to come together!

Matt Saint threw the majority today throwing four digs and keeping them at bay , followed up by Adrian "Fame" Hill, who also tied them up keeping them scoreless in his two digs!

We were very agressive with the bat today right from the start putting on 7 runs in the first three digs, And at the end of the game everyone picked up at least 1 hit! Its much easier to control the game in front! Our hitting was backed up in the field with next to zero errors!

Thanks to everyone who has helped out this team for the first half of the season, be it umpiring or filling in! I am looking forward to the second half, who knows what might happen! Its very pleasing to finish off with two wins in a row at the Christmas break!

Special thanks to Tony Catt for filling in this week and catching the game for us, he was hit twice while batting, It must of hurt cos he seemed to whinge alot! Thanks mate! Also to Sue Mulryan who is a our main scorer which is a rewardless job! Thanks!

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year, catch up with everyone next year!

Hits: D French 4, S Bates 3, A Hill 2, T Catt, S Gooley, B Schutz, D Oates, M Saint, S French 1.

Sturt 11 defeated Goodwood 6

It had the makings of a danger game - hot weather, a few Christmas party hangovers and an Indians team that had plenty of youth and experience - but the mighty Saints prevailed to make the turn 7-3 for the first half of the season.

Jess 'Lemo' Lemon was fantastic on the mound, throwing hard all day and giving Andrew 'AJ' Johnston a sore hand behind the plate. Plenty of Indians were left swinging or looking at stuff they couldn't touch while the few balls that did make it over the infield were quickly snaffled by Dave 'Hocko' Hocking, Ditmar 'Galloping' Guehrer and Jules 'Kiwi' Potiki.

As usual, there were plenty of highlights from the game including:
- three hits to Jordan 'The Splendid Splinter' Wayne who was unpassable at second and also closed out the last inning;
- two triples to coach Phil 'Philthy' Martin who proved the knee surgery had been worth it after all;
- another great display at first by Rich 'Elvis' Carter while Kingsley 'KWT' Turner was winning over a new legion of fans with yet another version of his facial hair (just the mo this weekend)

My particular favourite was when an Indian yelled 'GET OFF THE FIELD!!' from the sidelines and a sheepish Kiwi started trudging from his position at right field, shattered that he had finally been thrown out for failing to observe the SABL's dirty pants policy. No Jules, he was yelling at the goose who had decided that now was a great time to be walking your dog around the inside of the home run fence.

When the Splinter had sat down the last Indian, we had cemented our hold on third place and we're looking forward to the second half of the season. We're pitching well, we're rattling the bats, we're mixing baserunning aggression with good defence and, most importantly, the sledging between team mates is ever improving (for example: Lemo - "That hit that last guy got off me was a complete fluke." Splinter: "Nah, mate. He totally smashed that thing." See? That's how you keep your pitcher's head in the game!).

Big thanks to Josh 'Cliffy' Clifford who came out just to base coach (broken hand, prognosis - good), Ben 'Roger' Moore for doing the same (man cold - critical but stable) and Heather for scoring.

Hits: Wayne 3, Martin 2 (3 RBI), Potiki 1 (3), Turner (1), Johnston 1, Guehrer (1), Carter 1, Hocking 1 (1).

Under 17/1 (Coach: Tom Winter) Sponsored by: Felt Fabricating

The team consists of the following players: Tyson Hancock, Max Guerher, Tyler Duchene, Mitchell Lightbody, Jordan McArdle, Fraser Crameri, Charlie Goldsworthy, William Hill, Daniel Ortiz, Josh Tindall, Tom Bartley, Dylan Ridding, Edward Trupp and Shaun Wright.

Game 11 Sturt 19 East Torrens 2

Safe hits as follows: Guehrer 5, Trupp 3, Lightbody 3,Ridding 3, Goldworthy 2, Duchene 1, Hancock 1, Ortiz 1, Bartley 1.

A solid outing from Mitchell Lightbody who threw the whole four innings and giving up only two hits and 2 runs. All swung the bat well with everyone recording a hit. In the park home runs to Max Guehrer and Edward Trupp and triples to Charlie Goldsworthy and Max Guehrer. Max went 5 for 6 for the day.

Our fielding was solid again with great plays from Max Guehrer at short stop and Daniel Ortiz was solid behind plate.

A great effort by the boys to remain focused for the whole of the game.

We are now 8-3. Keep up the hard work the track.

Game 12 Sturt 13 v Adelaide 1 Safe hits as follows: McArdle 3, Trupp 2, Lightbody 2, Hancock 2, Tindall 1.

On a cool summers day at Norman Reserve saw Shaun Wright make his first start on the mound out for us. Throwing the first four innings of the game he gave up only one hit and no runs. Tyson Hancock then finished off the game. Today we saw another home run hit and it was by Tyson Hancock who hit it over the left field fence, Edward Trupp continued his good form with two triples and Jordan McArdle who went 3 for 3.

Our fielding was solid again with great plays from Tom Bartley at left field and Jordan McArdle who was again solid behind plate.

Thanks to David Lee for the wonderful work with the ground. Lets see us continue to play baseball at this wonderful ground.

I would like to thank our scorers Nicole McArdle, Trish Guehrer and Karen Tindall for the wonderful job so far this season.

Thanks today to Paul Holmes for umpiring.

We are now 9-3. Have a good Christmas and a happy New Year. Come back fired up boys ready for West Torrens in our return game after the break.

To all our members Merry Xmas and Happy New Year.

Bulls gain licence to play winter baseball 2013

Congratulations to the Bulls Baseball Club who last night were granted a licence by the Mitcham Council to play baseball on Norman Reserve in the Winter of 2013.

After two late revisions by Cr Weaver to Cr Ward's motion to allow the Bulls a license to play the 2013 Winter season the Council voted 8:1 to negotiate a new license, only Cr Fisher voting against.

Well done particularly to Dtimar Guehrer and Karen Tindall who both made outstanding deputations to the Council Meeting.

As previously advised the licence for Sturt to continue to play at Norman Reserve will be decided following a public consultation process commencing 14 January 2013 through to 15 February 2013. This will allow a report to be submitted to the Full Council meeting in February 2013 for Council's consideration.

I will write to you again about the consultation process in January and how you can be involved.
