Presentation Weekend Awards

Our Club held its Senior Presentation Night on Saturday 14th April 2012 and its Junior Presentation Day on Sunday 15th April 2012

Photos of the Senior Presentation night and Junior Presentation Day are now online on the front page of our website!

In my opening address to both events, I reflected on my observations of the 2011/12 season which included the merger of the Sturt Tee Ball Club with the Sturt Baseball Club. This is a great milestone for our club since as you all know junior development is a key direction of our club and now having the Tee Ball club as part of our club further builds our capacity in that area. The Tee Ball competition was this year run under the Australian Baseball Federation banner of Aussie Tee Ball and Rookie Ball on Friday nights. Congratulations to Richard Stranger as the Tee Ball Coordinator and his team of helpers in running a very successful season!

Congratulations to our Division 1 Senior Team who made the finals for the first time in 12 years! I would particularly like to acknowledge and thank Tony Catt for the outstanding work that he has done for our club in the capacity of Senior Coach. As you would know Tony is stepping down from the role of Senior Coach but with his son Angus coming through to Little League I think we will see Tony still involved in the club at this level. On Presentation Night, Tony was awarded the President's Award for his outstanding contribution to our club.

Well done to the other senior teams who made finals, namely Division 2, 3 and 6. It is rare that Sturt has had so many senior teams in finals and this coupled with our junior team successes which included all junior teams making finals! This is an outstanding achievement for our Junior Teams.

Congratulations to Little League 1-Sturt who were Premiers for the third year in a row! Commiserations to U14/1 - Sturt and the U16 - Saints team who both played off in the grand final but were unfortunately defeated on the day.

In my address I thanked all the coaches, scorers, umpires and other officials who have put in so much for our club! Our Club could not function without you!

Capps Medal 2011/12

In front of an audience of 400 people at the Capps Medal on Wednesday night, our players did us proud!

The Club was presented with the Baseball SA Junior Club of the Year Award which was accepted by Sturt Junior Coordinator John McClure who made an excellent acceptance speech!

Macca MacBeth accepted the Rookie of the Year Award and as his father told me tonight, Brett won the same award when he was Macca's age of 17 years! It was great to see three generations of MacBeth's at the Capps Medal.

Congratulations to Paul Mildren who was named joint Pitcher of the Year for the Bite an honour he shared with Dushan Ruzic

The Bite MVP was none other than our own Tom Brice! Unfortunately Tom could not be present at the Award ceremony and President Phil Robinson collected the Award on his behalf

Photos of this gala event are now online on the front page of our website.

Grand Final Edition

Congratulations to our Little League 1-Sturt Premiers for the third year in a row! Visit the front page of our website to see the victorious team! Commiserations go to our sturt Under 14 Division 1, who were defeated by West Torrens and to our Sturt U16 - Saints who were defeated by Port Adelaide. It was an outstanding achievement that we had three teams in Grand Finals this weekend and I would like to congratulate all involved for making it to the last game of the year!

Apart from the excitement of the Grand Finals there has been a lot of action off the field as well. Congratulations to Matthew (Macca) MacBeth who won the Baseball SA Rookie of the Year. This is an outstanding achievement and we wish Macca all the best for his very promising future in baseball.

At last Friday night's Baseball SA Junior Presentation Night, our club won Baseball SA Junior Club of the Year for 2011/12. Our club has previously won this Award three times in 2003/04,2004/05 & 2005/06. We are very pleased to win this Award. Congratulations to John McClure, Junior Coordinator, the Junior coaches and most importantly the junior players as the Award is given to the Club with the most junior wins!

Congratulations also to Harrison Knuckey who won the Baseball SA Little League Major- South MVP and Robbie Brennan who won the Little League Minor- South MVP. Well done to Mitchell Lightbody who was awarded the Brewers South Australia Future Player award for 2011/12.

As advised in last week's Newsletter Tony Catt has stepped down as our Senior Coach and accordingly an advertisement for the position of A Grade Coach has now been placed on the Jobs page of our website as well as the Baseball SA website. Applications close on 20th April 2012.

Any players interested in playing a weekend tournament in Cairns plus a couple of days R&R on the first weekend in August contact Fame 0438 415 961. The Barrier Reef tournament is played against teams from Cairns & Townsville in beautiful Trinity Beach.See Cairns Baseball League website.I played 3 seasons of masters up there and know the league well, they will look after us for accommodation & trips to the reef etc.The standard will be just below our Div 1 so we would need to take a pretty handy team. They have some ex Minor leaguer's in Brett Roenberg & Cameron Cairncross that may still be playing. This would be a great opportunity to escape our winter and have a great trip.

Presentation Days-Mark in your diary!

The Senior Presentation Night will be held on Saturday 14 April 2012 commencing at 7.30 pm and the Junior Presentation Day will be held on Sunday 15 April 2012, commencing at 1.00 pm. Please mark these dates down in your diary. I am aware that the Junior Presentation Day is in the middle of the school holidays, however each year we have to juggle around Easter and the start of the football season and other winter sports. I am sorry if some of you will be away but our options are very limited!

Under 16 - Saints (Coach: Glen McDonald) Sponsored by Mt Lofty Golf Club

This was a day full of promise. After a good training on Thursday I was feeling very positive about our chances. A bright sunny day and after a solid warmup the game was under way.

Our first three batters all hit the ball hard but straight to the fielders. Into the field we went and with Sam Powell having a little trouble finding his rythmn plus a popup that landed fair Port scored 4 runs and we had already dug ourselves a bit of a hole.

In the 2nd an obvious safe call at first was given out which thwarted a chance to regain some momentum. Port scored single runs in the 2nd & 3rd inning and as errors crept into our game they blew it wide open with 6 in the 4th & another 4 in the 5th.

We had managed to scratch a few runs over but the damage was done and the game was called after the top of the 6th.

Port played like Premiers and thoroughly deserved the honour while we couldn't take a trick and never really got going.

It was a sad end to what otherwise was a successful season. Final Score Saints 4 - Port Adelaide 16.

I wish to thank Simon Gray for his terrific work as manager, Maureen Rischmueller & Rosslyn Cross scorers, Howard Duchene and Bernard Hill pitch counting and Andy Amberg first base coach. I must also thank Peter Turner for his assistance umpiring and at training and Trevor Hendry umpiring.

Under 14/1 - Sturt (Coach: Garry Wood) Sponsored by Premier Trailers

Coach: Garry Wood, Assistant Coach: Barry Lunnon, Team Manager: David Lightbody

The team consists of the following players: Simon Adkins, Tyson Ottaway, Max Staggs, Arno Norrito, Henry Wood, Mitchell Lightbody, Zach Evreniadis, Ryack Parsons, Stuart Brennan, Zac Lunnon and Brodie Macbeth

Grand Final GAME Sturt 11 were defeated by West Torrens 13

Safe hits: Lunnon 3, Wood and Lightbody 2, Ottaway and Brennan 1

It is with a great deal of disappointment for the boys that I write this final report for the season "and maybe forever" having to advise that we were defeated by the very talented WT outfit yesterday which was as usual well drilled and well coached by Burke Webber.

It must be remembered that most of these boys have gone through the last 2 seasons not having lost a minor round game only to in successive years lose the GF by 1 and now 2 runs!

On a perfect Adelaide day Norman Reserve was turned out in magnificent condition thanks to Dave Lee. Thanks also to the large band of spectators who were there to support the boys.

Anyway what about the game? After a slow start and with some uncharacteristic errors and basic mistakes the boys fought back well from 5 nil down to get to within one run to then give up seven in the next innings to be 12 four down and facing a mercy rule defeat.

To the boys credit they kept fighting back and had several opportunities to score but in the end ran out of time to lose 13 to 11.

Although we had the same number of hits as WT with 9 we just didn't manage to score the runs when needed most. Unfortunately we recorded 6 strike outs for the game, however we did pick up 7 walks with some excellent at bats from several of the boys. To highlight the evenness of the game WT recorded 5 Strike outs and picked up 6 walks.

This recent practice of our standard defensive plays was put under pressure and the boys struggled somewhat with the nerves that come in finals. However our base running was much better than it has been and no signals were missed during the game! Brodie started on the mound and threw really well for 3 1/3 innings with not enough support from the defence and Mitchell Lightbody threw very well through the final 3 2/3 innings getting progressively better and better as the game went on. I thought Henry was outstanding behind the mask and he helped himself to 2 of the team's nine hits.

I am delighted to have had the opportunity to coach this excellent group of athletes and thank my assistant coach Barry "The Bear" Lunnon and "wonder manager" David Lightbody for their dedication, support and assistance during the year. Also to Julie and Trudy who have scored most the season and Debbie who was our official pitch counter, Craig Ottaway who has umpired many times and assisted on the setting up the grounds a big thank you. Sorry to anyone I have forgotten to mention. To our dedicated parents and grand-parents thanks for your support and please be proud of what these fine young men have achieved. Thanks also to John McClure and the committee for their time and effort during the season. A final thank you to Janet Young for scoring the GF which enabled Trudy and Julie to sit back and "ENJOY THE RIDE".

Go STURT and thanks for a great season boys !!!

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Jamie Knuckey) Sponsored by: Smyth's Confectionery

On what was a glorious day to be outside the boys faced Southern Districts at Southerns in the grand final.

Season record was 1-2 in their favour, and they beat us in the first final 2 weeks ago.

The boys seemed happy and focused when they arrived and we had a chat about the strength of a team is its weakest link, and while everyone had done well and different times, we had not clicked as a team and all played well at the same time.

While I could give a long overview of the match it is easier to say:

There was no weak link today
Every player had a safe hit (team total 16)
No Strikeouts
Great outfield catches and infield plays
Everyone remained positive - more later

Result - 12-5 WIN by mercy rule after 6 innings

At times this year we have had disappointment and frustration resulting in tears and negative attitudes. The game today started with a few moments going against us - hits going straight to infielders, 1 or 2 errors in the field by us, and a few lucky plays with pop ups landing safe. True to say we were not having the luck early. The boys stuck at it, remained positive and played for each other as great teams do. Down 2-0 after 3 we started to rally, the ball suddenly bounced our way - 4 runs in the 4th, 3 runs in the 5 th, and a maximum 5 in top of the 6th saw us leading 12-2 with SD going into bat. Under pressure they held there nerve, got the outs with 3 runs in - final score 12 to 5

STURT 12/1 Champions 3 years in a row with Mr Mac watching. Congratulations to all the boys - a fantastic team effort well deserved by all.

Special mentions to the pitchers - Harry gave us a great start and Thomas held it together under pressure at the end. Well done guys. Everyone batted well, but a special mention to Aussie - 4 hits from 4 at bats ( 3 safe, 1 fielders choice - for the stats purists) and some good outfield work (2 catches). HITS: Aussie 4 (3 safe), Samuel 3 (1 safe), Thomas Reed Harry Hugo Eli 2, Matan 2 (1 safe), Tyrese and Ky 1.

Special thank you to Lyn for scoring most matches this year. Also thanks to Brett who umpired most of our home games. You both have been a great help.

Thanks to all the parents for helping when asked and being there to support, but for also letting the coaches coach the team. We may not have made the right decisions all the time, but we have learnt a lot throughout the season too.

Congratulations to the team - PREMIERS 2011/12

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Mark Abfalter) Sponsored by Dean Lynds

Southern Districts 6 defeated Sturt 5

Another fine day for baseball, down the south to take on our 'bogey' side again, in what proved to be a great challenge to wrap up the season and test our resilience.

Starting in the bat, with strong hits from Jordan and Robbie, we quickly had 2 runs on the board with the boys showing their great base running skills. Into the field and Elliot started on the mound, quickly getting into the groove. The Hawks however had other plans and opened the batting ledger firing off a string of hits that had our boys ducking for cover. Four runs in the first...

Another couple of strong hits to leftfield from Jordan and rightfield from Andrew (yes - a four bagger!) saw us hit back and even the score ably supported by Elliot with a nice piece to rightfield only to hear a 'safe as a bank' on first called out? Robbie held his nerve in the second holding the Hawks to 2 RBI - score 6 - 4 after a loose return on a passed ball back to the pitcher saw them steal home?? One of those days...

A nice hit by Kurt past second in the third was enough to bring home Tom for another RBI and we were ready to hit back. Jordan stepped up to the mound to shut down the third in straight sets with 3 up 3 down to finish his pitching for the season on a strong note and the stage was set for the fourth.

The Hawks were not going to hand us the game without a fight as we struggled to connect with the bat. Tom came into pitch and didn't let us down with another fine pitching performance to set us up for a fifth innings. With the Hawks up by 1 run, a starting time of 10:06 on the score card (yes, I checked!), 4 innings completed and the clock sitting on 74 minutes elapsed at 11:20, what do you think the home side's ump called? Side and game... After all's said and done, we finished the season on top, no complaints from me, well done all.

Hits - R Brennan 2, Emmett 2, Ridgway 1, Schenk 1, A Brennan 1, Abfalter 1

Pitchers - Abfalter 3 K2's, Emmett 3 K2's, Ridgway 1 K2 + 2KC's, Brennan 2 K2's

Congratulations to all players on a great effort and result for the season, and thank you to all our assistants and scorers.

Don't forget our breakup and presentation day is on Sunday 15th April at 1:00pm at the club.

See you all there!

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Stuart Crutchley) Sponsored by: Watts Agencies & Brooks

Saints 20 Kensington 0

In a fairytale ending to the season, our own Sleeping Beauty aka Coach Stuart Crutchley awoke from his seven year slumber (we're not even going to speculate whether or not a handsome prince was involved) to find his Saints had morphed into the 1927 Yankees. What unfolded was as unexpected as it was magnificent for Saints' supporters.

On a perfect day for baseball and with the anticipation of three Sturt junior grand finals around town on the day, the Saints took the field at Kensington set to atone for a dismal pre-Christmas loss to their opposition. A season worth of hard work culminated in the Saints best performance of the year.

They relaxed, supported each other and hit the cover off the ball in a fashion that had only teased supporters throughout earlier games.

Big ticket performers were everywhere as the Saints racked up the maximum five runs in every inning on a total of eighteen hits and held the Cardinals scoreless throughout the contest. Most pleasing in this game was the hustle shown by all the boys that at times had lagged during the season. Josh set the tone by busting it down the line in the top of the 1stt to beat out a ground ball to shortstop after a leadoff single to left by Ollie. Nick then doubled to left centre and hits to DJ, Cooper, Patrick and a cracking double to right centre by Bailey polished off our first 5 run inning since mid-February.

Following a good inning of work on the mound by Josh, the boys set about building on their early lead. Anything within reachable distance of the plate was attacked by the Saints as the second inning featured doubles to Sam, Josh and Cooper with supporting run scoring singles to Mitch and DJ. Nick entered to pitch the second and anyone fiddling on their iPhone at the time stood a good chance of missing the entire half inning. Nick tossed super well and was supported by an unusual right field (Mitch) to first (DJ) putout on one of the only sharply hit balls by Kensy..

More of the same continued. Patrick, Bailey and DJ ripped solid hits around several walks and before long the Saints had this game well in hand. A highlight was Cooper entering to pitch the 3rd inning and his continued lights out toiling. The ESPN Top 10 play of the day was a Josh to DJ to Sam play at the plate that gunned down Kensy's only would-be score of the day. Fantastic throw from DJ and great work by Sam to corral the ball and hang on for the tag to maintain the shutout. This game was a real, real nice outcome for all concerned.

Special thanks to Lyn Carman for her unwavering resilience in scoring many of the games this season.

Congratulations to the Sturt U12 Premiers from the LL2 Saints!! Great work boys!! The torch will be passed to a solid group of up-and-comers from LL2 Saints and Sturt.

Hits: Cooper Gilbert (2B), Patrick Milewski (2B), Dayton Mitchell (3 each), Josh Wilson (2B), Mitch Foley, Bailey Passmore Duthy (2B) (2 each), Oliver Crutchley, Sam Stewart (2B), Nick Borrello (2B), (1 each)

RBIs: Dayton Mitchell 6, Josh Wilson 4), Sam Stewart, Cooper Gilbert (3 each), Mitch Foley 2, Nick Borrello, Bailey Passmore Duthy (1 each)

Newsletter 13/0312

Congratulations to all of our teams that participated in finals this weekend. What an outstanding achievement for our club to have teams from Division 1, Under 18 , Under 16, Under 14 and Little League playing in finals. I know our club supporters who turned out in strength to support these respective teams will echo my comments. As with any finals, there can only be one winner, congratulations to Under 16 - Saints, Under 14/1 - Sturt and Little League 1-Sturt who have all progressed to Grand Finals this coming Sunday.

Match times for these Grand Finals are as follows:

Port Adelaide 16/2 vs Sturt U16/2 18 Mar 2012 3:00 PM at Port Adelaide

Sturt 14/1 vs West Torrens 14/1 18 Mar 2012 12:30 PM at Sturt

Southern Dist LL Maj Sth vs Sturt LL Maj Sth 18 Mar 2012 12:00 PM at Southern Districts, 11c

Also please note change of time for the Hawks vs SBC Little League 2 - Sturt at Southern Districts Ground 11 C which will now be played at 10.00 am as a curtain raiser to the Little League 1-Sturt Grand Final.

Commiserations to our Under 18 and Under 16 - Sturt sides who unfortunately did not win through to play off in a Grand Final. You both did an outstanding job to make the Preliminary Final and are to be congratulated on this outstanding achievement.

With our Division 1 side playing in finals for the first time in 12 years, expectations were high and it was wonderful to see the huge number of Sturt supporters that went to Glenelg on both Saturday and Sunday to cheer on our boys. It was bitterly disappointing to see the boys go down in two games, both with a single run and I know how gutted the team feels about this result. On the positive side, I believe our boys have stepped up to another level this season and this is in no small measure due to the outstanding committment of our players but in particular our Senior Coach Tony Catt. Tony is a legend within our club and his dedication, expertise, mentoring of players and passion for our club is unsurpassed.

Some of you may be aware that before the 2011/12 season commenced Tony advised the Senior Committee that this would be his last year as Senior Coach, as he wants to spend more time with his family and also coaching his son Angus who this year was playing in the Aussie Tee Ball and Rookie Ball competition. Our club is greatly indebted to the work that Tony has done and the good news is that Tony will still be around the club most likely as a junior coach for whichever team his son ends up playing in!

As the Senior Committee has been aware of Tony's intentions, the Committee has formulated a selection process for our next senior coach. The position will be advertised next Monday 19 March through this Newsletter and also through the Baseball SA website. A selection panel consisting of David Lee (A Grade Manager), Paul Mildren (A Grade Player with international baseball experience), Wally Marks (external baseball expert) and myself as Chair of the Selection Committee will undertake the selection process.

This week's Featured Player of the Week, Nick Borello from the from the Sturt Little League 2 Saints side. You can access the Player Profiles from the front page of the website either through the top menu about>player profiles or clicking on the icon under the Premiership table. Any player from Aussie Tee Ball through to our A Grade team is eligible to be a Featured Player of the week. To be featured simply fill answer the questions in the proforma and send it back with a photo to president@sturtbaseballclub.org.au

Elimination Finals

Game 1-Sturt 4 lost to Glenelg 5

After beating Glenelg twice during the season the boys entered the weekends contest full of self belief.

We sent our ace, Paul Mildren, to the mound and after finding a little trouble in patches he kept us in the game. Offensively we kept chipping away but couldnt quite crack a big inning which ended up our downfall. Very proud of the way the boys fought this game out to the very last out where we still had a good chance to tie it up. Unfortunately not our day.

Hits - Macbeth 2, Stokes 2, Carter (HR), Watts, Lawson, Brebner - Russ, Adkins

Game 2-Sturt 4 lost to Glenelg 5

After the pain of the defeat the previous day the boys were keen to come out firing and we did just that. A 2 run home run in the 3rd to David Carter gave us an early lead which Chris Lawson was doing a magnificent job of defending. However, the hits dried up and the Bays fought back. Some late heroics by David Carter and Jackson Brebner - Russ gave us a chance to go to extra innings but to Glenelg's credit they knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

That ended what has been a great season for the senior group. To make finals for the first time in 12 years was a good reward for a lot of hard work.

Hits - Carter 2, Brebner-Russ, Brice, Holmes, Stokes.

Under 18 (Coach: Jeff Nicholas) Sponsored by: Adelaide Commercial Flooring & Freshwater Systems

The Sturt Under 18 team lost their preliminary final to East Torrens 1 - 0.

The game was ours to be won on several occasions, however as we have done throughout the season we couldn't get the hits when we wanted them and left runners on bases too many times.

The pitching strength from both teams shone out. Matt Franke and Shaun Wright pitched well restricting the opposition to 3 scattered hits and picked up 9 K2's. We hit safely 7 times and had 8 K2's.

It was disappointing to end our season losing by one run, however the team played well and should be proud of themselves to get this far.

A big thank you to the Under 16 boys who filled in again this week, but also to all the boys that helped out throughout the season when we were short of players.

Thank you to the supporters who came out and watched our games, the boys appreciated your support.

Thank you to all the helpers that assisted in setting up grounds, pitch counts, scoring we couldn't do it without you.

Under 16 - Saints (Coach: Glen McDonald) Sponsored by Mt Lofty Golf Club

It was a real treat getting to play the Preliminary Final at our beautiful home ground Norman Reserve. With the U12's & U14's both winning before us the pressure was on to make it 3 out of 3. We allowed Kensington 3 1st inning runs then responded with 3 of our own. This set the scene for a Titanic struggle. Sam Powell settled into his pitching to record 2 shutout innings as we crept to a 4-3 lead. In the 4th however Kensy's came out hitting again to pick up 3 runs and after we scored 1 we trailed 6-5.

By this stage many of the Div1 senior players and supporters were back at the club as the entertainment continued. We managed 2 runs in the 5th to regain the lead only to see Kensy's score twice in the 6th to take it back. After holding them out in the top of the 7th we needed 1 to tie it up, 2 to win or it was season over. Ryan Cross lead off with a walk, Sam Cavanagh hit to 3rd and beat the throw then Fraser Crameri walked to load the bases and we had Kensy's in trouble but we still needed to score and they had made 2 double plays in the game. With his 4th hit of the day Matt Amberg drove in the tieing run and bases were still loaded.

William Hill then stepped to the plate and drilled a hard ground ball to right that beat the infield and the outfield for a triple to clear the bases and the game was ours. The cheer from the parents and supporters was impressive and so was the victory. This was an epic game with every player contributing. Sam Powell pitched 5 strong innings. Sam Cavanagh pitched the final 2 under tremendous pressure. Daniel Ortiz had a hit and a catch in left field, Tom Bartley took a solid catch in right and Angus read had a hit a catch in centre and backing up 2nd base threw out a runner at 3rd. Tyler Duchene picked 2 walks and Damon Gray made numerous plays at 2nd and had a nice hit. It was the effort and the ability to keep fighting back that was very pleasing to see. We're not the most experienced team out there but this team doesn't give up and that will give us a great chance in next weeks Grand Final at Port Adelaide. Final Score Saints 9 - Kensington 8

Finals GAME 2 Sturt 17 defeated Southern Districts 2

With "Coach Grumpy" still recovering from knee surgery from last week he ventured from the bench on to the field. I am pleased to report that the Sturt team were victorious against Southern Districts and now progress to the Grand Final against West Torrens at Norman Reserve next Sunday.

Our bats rallied this week amassing 17 hits and only 2 strike outs in 4 innings for the game, we also picked up 8 walks with some excellent at bats from several of the boys. We had an on base percentage of .730.

This week we will again practice our standard defensive plays and look to improve our hitting particularly to the right side. Our base running was better but still needs improving and on numerous occasions the coach was far from happy when signals were either missed or unable to be put on due to players not looking! Brodie Macbeth pitched the whole game throwing 66 pitches with 44 pitches being strikes. Our fielding was solid for most of the game with 2 basic errors the only blemishes.

I am again looking forward to training on Tuesday night when we will continue to get back to basics and that hitting practice with the great Don Wulff on Friday night will hopefully see us improve even further.

As mentioned recently, several positions in the team are still "up for grabs" and each boy needs to show me they deserve and want to be a part of this team.

Well done boys now we have reached the Grand Final against our West Torrens. It is now time to put that hard work into practice and bring home the flag for the mighty Saints!

Thanks to Trudy E for scoring and the guys that set up the diamond.

Go STURT !!!

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Jamie Knuckey) Sponsored by: Smyth's Confectionery

With the sun shining the boys faced a do or die final against Adelaide to progress to the grand final next week. Having struggled in our 2 previous meetings (1 run win and a draw, both with last innings comebacks) we knew it was going to be a tough game.

Harrison started on the mound and got us off to a great start lasting 4 innings (48 pitches, 34 strikes, 4 K's, 2 runs).

Our batting was solid all day scoring runs in every at bat - 3 in the first, then 2 in the next 4 innings. Score after 5 innings was 11-4.

Ky replaced Harry on the mound for the fifth and after getting some runners on base rallied to close the innings to with 2 Ks. With a 7 run lead Ky started the 6th with a walk then 2 Ks to have adelaide under some pressure. The top of the Angels order responded, and with some pressure on the fielders we let some extra bases after a couple of solid hits and 3 runs scored before the innings closed (Ky 67 pitches, 34 strikes, 4 Ks, 5 runs scored) Score 11-7. Now under some scoreboard pressure we needed at least 2 runs to finish the game. Ky lead us off with a stand up double to CF, followed by a single to Matan - winning runs on base. Up stepped Eli - crunched it over CF for an in the park HR - officially a wild throw through third ( Mum was official scorer ) but we will still believe it to be a HR. 3 runs scored - 14-7 final score.

Great effort with the bat today boys. Runners on base was converted to runs and score board pressure.

Batting: Hits - 12 (Harry 3 - 2 doubles, Tom 2, Ky 2 - 1 double, Eli 2 - 1 Double and 1 HR, singles to Reed, Hugo, Matan)
Walks - 8 (Samuel 3, Tom 2, Harry 1, Ky 1, Aussie 1)

Fielding: Good outfield catches to Matan and Aussie, Eli a great effort as catcher for 6 innings, Good infield play Ky for a 5-3.

Congratulations Samuel, Thomas, Reed, Harrison, Hugo, Ky, Matan, Eli, Aussie, and Tyrese for making the grand final - a great job and you all should be proud of your efforts. The job is not done yet - some crucial fielding errors under pressure today cost us bases and ultimately runs. We must make the outs when we have a chance, especially against Southerns who will capitalise on any extra bases. See you all Wednesday for a final training.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Mark Abfalter) Sponsored by Dean Lynds

Sturt 16 defeated Glenelg 8

A beautiful morning for baseball, down at the Bay to take on the Tigers. After a tight warm-up session, the boys looked as strong as the smell of the Pat wafting over the western ground.

We started at bat with hits to Andrew at rightfield and Elliot past shortstop, coupled with a handful of BB's saw home 3 RBI's. Robbie Brennan's steady hand on the mound made Glenelg earn their hits conceding only 1 hit and 1 BB to throw 3 K2's.

Into the second and our batters were on fire with hits to Andrew, Axel, Elliot, Tom and Owen. Coupled with excellent base running saw the boys see through 5RBI's to put themselves in charge of the match. Elliot was put onto the mound in the second and the Tigers started to growl with a couple of hits and 3 RBI's. A K2 from Elliot with some excellent work in the infield by Tom and the Bayboys were stopped in their tracks.

Opening the third again, the boys were not going for the easy option of waiting for walks with hits to Jonathan Gransden, Zac Short, Robbie, Andrew, Elliot and Owen to see another 3 RBI's and the match was in our hands. Jordan came into pitch in the third and threw 3 K2's for no hits in another fine performance on the mound, to put the game out of reach.

The fourth saw strong hits to Robbie and Elliot and another swag of BB's and we had 16 runs on the board. Into the field and we made more moves than Michael Jackson switching the infield to outfield. Tom found some momentum after early BB's throwing 3 KC's and the game was wrapped up.

Hits - A Brennan 3, Elliot 3, R Brennan 2, Owen 2, Gransden 1, Tom 1, Zac 1, Axel 1
Pitchers - R Brennan 3 K2's, Abfalter 3 K2's, Tom 3 KC's , Elliot 1 K2

Well done to all, momentum is strong going into the last round.

Training is on again at Norman Reserve this week at 4:30pm. We now have 1 game left in the season, its' a 12:00pm at Southern Districts for our breakup match. Don't forget to bring a plate of food and deckchair for a picnic lunch afterwards. See you all there!

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Stuart Crutchley) Sponsored by: Watts Agencies & Brooks

Saints 11 defeated Southern Districts 8

For what is now certainly the last time this season, the Saints made the well travelled journey to Flinders University to meet up with Southern Districts for their penultimate game of the 2011-12 season. With first place pretty well out of reach thanks to our Sturt brethren, the Saints primary focus was to mix things up and expose as many players to various positions as time would allow. In doing so, the Saints turned in one of their two best team efforts of the year (and at this point of the season nobody can remember the other one) to turn back a youthful Southern Districts team 11-8.

Every single player contributed in a big way to this victory from start to finish. Nick got the starting nod for the first time holding the Hawks to three runs in the top of the first. In an outing that tested his meddle for the first time while pitching, Nick proved that a rocky day for him is better than what the opposition can offer on a good day. The Mighty Sainters were able to match that three run start in quick fashion in the bottom of the first thanks to a one out double to Mitch, a hard earned walk to Josh, a single to right by Nick and a bases clearing triple to centre by DJ. Way to get on that bike, big fella!

Cooper Gilbert, making his second appearance on the mound this season, was simply brilliant in the second inning. Displaying poise, control and everything else the sizeable crowd would appreciate, Coop was proof of the pudding that hard work and resilience at training and in the backyard over the course of the season turns into great things. Six balls and eleven strikes while striking out three of the top four Southern Districts batters says it all.

In the bottom of the 2nd, the boys took advantage of a leadoff hustle single to third by Ollie, a walk to Sam and a monster two run triple to right centre by Josh to push four across the plate and open up a 7-3 lead.

Enter Baily Passmore-Duthy for the top of the third for his Little League pitching debut. With minimal formal pitching training under his belt but a desire to pitch as big as Queensland, he took to the hill with the vocal support of his teammates. After a not uncommon shaky start to proceedings for a firs timer, Bailey turned in a solid effort finishing up with a short to second double play and a pitcher to first comebacker to close out his first shot at dishing it up.

Down 8-7 heading into the bottom of the third and time running out, the boys set about the task at hand with the grit of 20 Grade sandpaper. Walks to Coop, Sam and Mitch were followed by a single to deep second by Josh that scored two. A crank to right centre to DJ pushed across the final two runs to close out the win. On to Kensy next week to complete the season and make amends for our last contest.

Good luck from the U12 Minor Saints to the Under 12 Majors Saints against Southern Districts in the Grand Final. Go Sturt!!!!!!!!

Hits: Dayton Mitchell (3B, 2B), Josh Wilson (3B) (2 each) , Mitch Foley (2B), Nick Borello, Oliver Crutchley (1 each)

Newsletter 05/03/12

I am very pleased to be able to write to you in this week's Newsletter with the news that our Division 1 side is playing in finals for the first time in 12 years! This is an outstanding achievement and really the culmination of efforts for well over a decade in promoting the strength of the player base within our club, which starts in our Tee Ball programme and progresses through the Junior teams and now extends to our Senior Squad which includes Divisions 1,2, 3 and this year Division 4. Our club has taken the philosophy of by developing juniors we will then be able to see those players come through and play in Senior level teams, primarily in Divisions 1,2 and 3. This year that was extended to Division 4.

It is really a mark of that success that we had Divisions 2, 3 and 6 also playing off in finals this weekend. While these teams did not win their respective games and clearly that is disappointing for all involved I trust that there is some consolation that each and every one of these players helped put pressure on selection for A grade and as such improved the overall standard of our Division 1 side. Thanks to everyone who came out to Norman Reserve yesterday to support our Division 1 side.

Our Division 1 side will now be playing a best of three games at Glenelg this weekend at the following times:

Saturday 10 March: Sturt Division 1 v Glenelg at Glenelg at 3.00 pm

Sunday 11 March : Sturt Division 1 v Glenelg at Glenelg at 11.30 am

Sunday 11 March: Sturt Division 1 v Glenelg at Glenelg at 3.00 pm (if required)

Our Junior teams all remain in the finals with games to be played on Sunday 11 March at the following times:

Under 18: East Torrens v Sturt at East Torrens at 9.30 am

Under 16/1: West Torrens v Sturt at West Torrens at 3.30 pm

Under 16/2: Sturt v Kensington at Sturt at 3.30 pm

Under 14/1: Sturt v Southern Districts at Sturt at 12.30 pm

Little League 1: Sturt v Adelaide at Sturt at 10.00 am

This is an outstanding result for our Junior teams! Best of luck to our Division 1 and Junior teams in finals this weekend!

Also our Little League 2 sides are also playing the normal home and away games with Tigers vs SBC Little League 2 - Sturt at Glenelg Ground 3 B at 10.00 am and SBC Little League 2 - Saints vs Southern Districts at Flinders University Ground also at 10.00 am.

In Tee Ball news, after the disappointing cancellation of the Sturt round of the All-stars last week due to hot weather, the final round of the All-stars competition was held at Southern Districts on Sunday 4 March. The Sturt Team came out with an early win against Southern Districts in the first of three high scoring games. It was a perfect day for batters and the mercy rule of 5 runs applied in a high number of innings during the afternoon. The second game resulted in a loss against the form team from Kensington, with a draw in the last game against West Torrens. MVP on the day was awarded to Kurt Schenk with a consistent performance with the bat and in the field. Voting for the Rising Star Awards went down to the wire with Robbie Brennan, Finn Stranger and Kurt Schenk taking out the awards. Joshua Vidale narrowly missed out on on a Rising Star Award and proved to be a consistent performer both in the field and with the bat for all three rounds. Overall placings at the completion of the competition saw Kensington take the trophy followed by Sturt, West Torrens and Southern Districts. Six players from each team will now be selected to take part in a demonstration game as the curtain raiser to to the Little League North versus South game on 13 April. Thanks to All-stars Coach, Laura Stranger and Assistant Coach, Linda Schenk for their efforts and enthusiasm and to parents who have contributed to the smooth running at each of the rounds.

Congratulations to Matthew Franke, Shaun Wright and Max Guehrer - reserve who have made the SA State schoolboys team with Championship Dates: 20th - 26th May with the championship to be played here in Adelaide.

Game 1: Sturt 4 lost to Port 5

We head into the double header against Port knowing one win will secure 4th spot. The boys came out breathing fire in the first couple of innings with an early 3 run lead and things moving in the right direction. Chris Lawson was doing a great job on the hill for the Saints with the defence behind him making some crucial plays during the game.

With the score at 4-2 heading into the 6th, we handed Tom Becker the pill and he got out of a jam and preserved the lead into the 7th.

Unfortunately Port rallied with some timely hitting including a two out, 2 RBI single that gave them the lead which we couldn't peg back.

Offensively we picked up 11 hits but once again couldn't quite get it done late in the game.

A disappointing start to the day but there was still Game 2!

Hits - Adkins 2, Watts 2, Holmes, Macbeth, Carter, Brice, Turner, Lawson, Brebner - Russ

Game 2: Sturt 0 lost to Port 1

This was a game of high pressure and fantastic baseball.

Paul Mildren got the start for the Saints and did a truly magnificent job working through 9 innings of shutout baseball.

Unfortunately for Paul he didn't get the run support he deserved with the Saints hitters managing just 6 scattered hits for the game. The killer blow wasn't delivered.

Tom Becker again relieved and after working through the 10 inning comfortably found himself in some trouble in the 11th with runners at the corners with 2 out.

After a botched play at second base the runner scored and we found ourselves on the wrong side of the ledger.

A tough game to lose but I thought the way we played all day was fantastic, just need to get some hits at the right times. It will happen.

The baseball gods in the end did smile on us as Henley defeated Souths and allowed the Saints to play finals baseball for the first time in 12 years.

I am very proud of what this group has achieved so far this season and now we have been given a second chance at the finals I am sure the boys will make the most of it.

Make sure you make it out this weekend to support the group as I know they appreciate it.

Hits - Holmes, Brebner-Russ, Turner, Macbeth, Carter, Adkins

Division 2 (Coach: Zac Stokes) Sponsored by: Catapultwealth (Major Sponsor)

West Torrens 8 defeated Sturt 3

After reaching our first goal of making finals we could not reach further goals of playing another final.

We faced a good hitting lineup and Lewis did a great job of keeping the game to 4-3 after 6 innings. Unfortunately a few errors and lucky breaks their way before a good hit meant they were able to out score us.

Only having 3 hits for the game will make it hard to win at any level. Their pitcher threw a great complete game and we couldn't catch up in late innings.

Tom Winter had his best offensive game of the season and caught well. He will be surely missed if he keeps his post game word of stopping playing top level senior baseball. Jared Dutchy Holland played an excellent game controlling the outfield. Highlighted with a couple of running back overhead catches.

Hits: Winter 2, Prokopec 1

Unfortunately we don't get to play again this season but I am very happy and proud of how everyone in the B grade played this year. We are right around it with the top teams. Keep working hard!

Thank you to all that have helped and supported the B grade this season. I know the guys appreciate it as much as I do. And a big Thank you to Sue Brebner for scoring.

Div 6's First Final in 5 years V Adelaide @ Adelaide

In our previous two meetings we had beaten Adelaide 14 - 6 & 11 - 2 so I was feeling good about playing them in our first final.

We started with the bats and Adelaide sent Kieran Cassidy to the mound who we faced in our last game against them. We started of as usual with 4 batters up for our three outs and no runs scored.

In the field we started with the Rat (Rick Trembath) and as the last few games have been we allowed 2 runs to cross the plate from a couple of cheap shots and one good shot to centre left.

Our second at bat and we had three up and down to be back in the field before our back sides had even touched the pine.

We had Adelaide all out for no runs in their 2nd at bat to still be down 2 - 0

Our 3rd at bat started well with Bones (Glen McDonald) hitting safe only to be picked off at first and we ended the innings still with a big 0 in the score book.

The game went like this through the next 4 innings as we were unable to score at all. We had two innings with loaded bases and were unable to get any body home.

This was the way it went for us as we watch the season slip away to a side that we should have beaten but we didn't. Our bats went to sleep on the day when it mattered the most but that is baseball.

The final score for the day was 2 - 0 down, we did the job in the field after the first innings which is how we have played the last 6 or 7 games but we did not do the same with the bats.

It was however a very enjoyable season for us as we welcomed back some of the sons that had been lost to baseball after finishing playing their junior days so it was pleasing in that respect. It was pleasing to make the finals and we will be hoping for something better next season. We will recruit over the off seasons and try and get some more of the sons playing, for me it is great to be able to play baseball with both my sons on the field and hopefully we can have more fathers and sons play together.

A big thanks to all those that came out to watch the game, sorry we could not make it a different result.

I would also like to thank the three ladies that scored for me during the season, with out them I do not know what I would do. Thanks Carol Burns, Jo Trembath and Janet Young.

Thanks also goes to my wife for putting up with me during the season.

Safe Hits Long 1 (1D), Lunnon B 1 (1D), Small 1, Lee 1, Day 1 and McDonald 1

Sturt defeated Golden Grove 13 - 6 to win our elimination final.

In our first 9 innings game for the season, the boys took control of the game early and never let Golden Grove back in. We gave up 3 runs in the 1st with two out, but replied quickly scoring 5 runs and continued to build on the winning margin.

In an errorless fielding display, our defence was strong making the outs when they came and supported two great pitching efforts by Matt Franke and Shaun Wright.

Matt started on the mound and pitched 5 innings for 8K2's, 3 walks and 7 hits, while Shaun finished the game with a strong performance facing only 13 batters in 4 innings, also picking up 8K2's and giving up 1 hit.

Our batting was aggressive picking up 11 safe hits and we put the ball into play at most at bats, forcing the opposition to make errors under pressure.

Matt Franke had a day out with the bat picking up 3 hits (2 Doubles) and collecting 9 RBI's.

Hits: Franke, Lightbody 3, Wayne 2, Duffield, Lemon & Roberts 1.

A big thank you to the Under 16 boys that each played 3 innings for us to make up our numbers. Well done Max G, Max W & Jordan Mc.

Sturt 10 def Southern Districts 0

Today we started the game off really well taking a 4 run lead after the first, this included some good hitting and then a over the fence 3 run homer from Max G. Unfortunately we didn't score for a few more digs and things were kept tight at 4-0 for the first 3 digs. We then busted things open in the 4th and scored another 4 runs mainly through errors from the opposition. But we put the ball on the ground, ran the bases hard and applied the pressure to draw these errors. Offensively we hit well today, some of us still need to work on pitch selection and be prepared to go deep in the count. Defensively we were very solid, Tyson again pitched 5 solid digs giving up very few hits and allowing no runs. Tyler then finished off the our last dig dominating the opposition on the mound. Henry played outfield superbly taking 3 really tough catches, Jayden was solid at short ,Jordan blocked the ball well and Charlie took a tough one at second with the sun in his eyes. We finished with a shutout from the pitchers and no errors from the field. Boys we still need to increase our intensity next week, do the little things like talk it up on the bench we are way to quiet. We need to continue scoring after getting a lead, we tend to stop and relax after a good start. Let's train hard and go get em next week lads! Well done today boys we are through to the next round of finals.

Under 16 - Saints (Coach: Glen McDonald) Sponsored by Mt Lofty Golf Club

Finishing in second place gave us a Second Semi Final at Port Adelaide for a chance to advance straight into the Grand Final. We struggled with the bat for 4 innings and failed to score against some good pitching and solid fielding. In the meantime we conceded 4 runs with 5 walks, 1 error and only 2 hits doing the damage. As it was a 7 innings game meant we still had a chance and in the 5th we scored 3 runs to make it close only to give up 4 in the bottom of the inning. We managed another 2 runs but the margin was a little too much. Sam Powell pitched 4 decent innings but hurt himself with 6 walks. After a couple of early hiccups Ryan Cross pitched a good dig and Sam Cavanagh threw a shutout inning that included a Sam Powell centre field assist to William Hill at third base for the third out. Damon Gray had a hit and 3 RBI's, Daniel Ortiz ripped a shot to right field , Tom Bartley and Ryan Cross picked up an infield hit each. It was a tough game in difficult windy conditions but I was pleased with how the boys fought the game out and we looked good using the cutoffs. Despite not hitting well we stayed in touch and if we get the bats going early next week we will be a big threat. Final Score Saints 5 - Port Adelaide 8

The team consists of the following players: Simon Adkins, Tyson Ottaway, Max Staggs, Arno Naritto, Henry Wood, Mitchell Lightbody, Zach Evreniadis, Ryack Parsons, Stuart Brennan, Zac Lunnon and Brodie Macbeth

Finals GAME 1 Sturt 9 defeated West Torrens 5

Safe hits: Wood 2 RBI's, MacBeth, Lunnon 3 RBI's, Lightbody 1 RBI and Brennan 2 RBI (1 hit each)

With "Coach Grumpy" recovering from knee surgery during the week and sitting on the sidelines, the reigns were handed over to the great Bear Lunnon and CB. I am pleased to report that the Sturt team managed to squeeze past our talented opposition in a high quality game at the Flinders University ground which was turned out in excellent condition.

Although we were out hit 10 hits to 5 we certainly managed to hit when needed most. Unfortunately we recorded 6 strike outs for the game, however we did pick up 8 walks with some excellent at bats from several of the boys. After the team's recent far from impressive form and overall lack of baseball recently due to all weather extremes, it is nice to be able to report continued improvement across most aspects of our game, but we still have significant improvement required if we are to really challenge for the championship.

This week we will again practice our standard defensive plays and look to improve our contact hitting particularly when faced with 2 strikes. Our base running was better but still needs improving and on numerous occasions the coach was far from happy when signals were either missed or unable to be put on due to players not looking! Mitchell Lightbody threw very well through 4 innings before Brodie Macbeth closed the game out for us. I thought Henry Wood caught a very good game and that our fielding was solid for most of the game with 2 basic errors the only blemishes.

I am again looking forward to training on Tuesday night when we will continue to get back to basics and that the hitting practice with the great Don Wulff on Friday night will hopefully see us improve even further.

As mentioned recently, several positions in the team are still "up for grabs" and each boy needs to show me they deserve and want to be a part of this team.

Well done boys now we have the Hawks who we have somewhat struggled against this year and then hopefully the opportunity to contest a GF? The ball is in your court, how badly do you want it boys?

Thank you to Glenn Young for umpiring and Janet Young for scoring. Also thanks to Ethan Eggleston for sitting for us today and contributing throughout the game with warming up players etc.

Go STURT !!!

After finishing second we travelled to Southern Districts for our first final in what turned out to be a tough, hard fought game. In a day when very little went our way, the boys toughed it out to the top of the 7th only to fall short 11 to 7 final score.

Thomas started on the mound and was on the wrong side of some close calls, but with no-one from SD looking like getting bat on ball. Harry took over pitching well but was limited by a sore elbow. With best laid plans by the coaches to have Tom and Harry go deep into the match we found ourselves at bottom 3. Hugo stepped up and pitched very well , seen some excellent safe hits from SD, a went the full pitch count into bottom 6 - great job Hugo.

Offensively we started well scoring 2 in the first with our first 4 batters on base. Unfortunately we left runners on base consistently throughout the game, not capitalizing on some good batting form. The team had 14 hits (and 6 walks) compared to SD 9 hits (12 walks) yet we only scored 7 to SD 11. Thru the first 3 innings we had 8 safe hits to Hawks 1 yet trailed 5 to 3. While a tough call against Harry at home did not help our cause, we had plenty of opportunity and did not convert this into scoreboard pressure.

The boys need to be encouraged from their efforts today - SD played their best and we could have done a lot better in a number of areas, yet they only just got us. With some hard work the boys can do better should we meet them again.

Hits - Thomas 4, Harry 4, Reed 2, Ky 2, Eli 1, Tyrese 1

Walks - Samuel 4, Matan 1, Hugo 1, Aussie 1.

Sturt 13 defeated West Torrens 8

It's always a challenge heading down to Rutland Ave to face the Eagles as this club is always committed, and today was no different. The weather was much better than previous weeks and perfect for baseball.

We got off to a flyer with the bat with some strong hitting from Johnno Gamble past third and Robbie repeating the effort. With a handful of BB's we saw 5 RBI's before heading out to field. Robbie started off on the mound and after a few BB's found some momentum throwing a couple of K2's and holding the opposition to 2 runs. A nice easy out by Elliot put them back in the field.

Hits to Robbie, Elliot & Tom in the second put the pressure back on the Eagles. Elliot came into pitch in the second and the Eagles were not going to let us run away with the match by picking up another 2 runs as the ump was making us earn our strikes with some tough calls. Score was 6 to 4 at the bottom of the second.

Opening the third again with strong batting saw hits to Jordan, Johnno, Robbie, Elliot & Tom with excellent base running to see another 5 RBI's and the match was in our hands. Jordan came into pitch in the third and threw 3 K2's for no hits in what was his best effort this year on the mound, to put the game out of reach. The fourth saw a cracking hit from Axel past rightfield to see him run all the way home and the Eagles were under the pump. Hits to Jonathan Gransden, Jordan and Andrew brought home 2 more RBI's. A circus catch at rightfield from Axel Andrews had the crowd on their feet to seal the game and left us all with a smile after a well deserving win.

Hits - R Brennan 3, J Gamble 2, Elliot 2, Tom 2, Abfalter 2, J Gransden 1, Andrews 1, A Brennan 1

Pitchers - Abfalter 3 K2's, R Brennan 2 K2's, Emmett 2 K2's

Well done to all, another strong performance. Special mention to Axel Andrews for his best game this year and his steady improvement.

Training is on again at Norman Reserve this week at 4:30pm. We now have 2 games left in the season, both away from home. We head down to the bay to take on the Glenelg Tigers at 10:00am at Glenelg's home ground near the Pat.

See you all there!

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Stuart Crutchley) Sponsored by: Watts Agencies & Brooks

Saints 6 defeated Hawks 2

A solid short game is the key to success in golf……and baseball? The Saints took the field at Flinders University on a cool, breezy morning against the Hawks and ground out a 6-2 victory against their young opponents from the south. In what is becoming a late season pattern, the Saints relied on strong pitching and just enough offense to get the job done to chalk up another "W". Four Saints' pitchers combined to allow one hit and that single was the only Hawk ball to reach the outfield in the game. In fact, such was the dominance of Saints' pitching only three Hawk batters put the ball in play. With the Saints themselves only knocking three past the infield, this was primarily a game of pitch and catch.

DJ opened proceedings on the mound with a rocky three walk, one HPB, three strikeout inning that ultimately held the Hawks to a single run and gave the boys the early advantage. In the bottom of the first Sam drew a one out walk before Nick padded his insurmountable lead for the team's Ron Hunt Award by getting hit by a pitch for the fifth time this season. (Hunt, a long retired, often hit major leaguer once claimed "Some people give their bodies to science; I give mine to baseball,") A walk to DJ was followed with singles by Josh and Cooper and the Saints established a lead they never relinquished.

Sam pitched the second and was equally rocky in freakishly turning in the exact same numbers as DJ had in the first. Walks to Mitch and Bailey to lead off the bottom of the second set up an RBI single to deep short by Sam and with nobody out the table was set to break the game open. Unfortunately unlike earlier in the season when runs were aplenty, we're just not getting those timely hits when needed which certainly makes each game interesting and pitching and defense all the more important.

The ever reliable Nick took the pill in the third and shut the Hawks down on sixteen pitches, ten of which were strikes. Josh was even more impressive opening up with six straight bullet strikes and cleaning up the Hawks on fifteen pitches. The U14s are in for a pleasant surprise when Josh rolls up next year. Patrick, whose glove work behind the plate improves with every game, iced the cake with an RBI single to centre in the bottom of the 4th and the Saints headed home a happy crew.

Hits: Josh Wilson, Cooper Gilbert , Sam Stewart, Mitch Foley (2B), Patrick Milewski (1 each)

RBIs: Josh Wilson, Cooper Gilbert (2 each), Sam Stewart, Patrick Milewski (1 each)
