Sturt Presentation Awards April 2011

Our Club held its Senior Presentation Night on Saturday 4th April 2011 and its Junior Presentation Day on Sunday 5th April 2011

Photos of the Senior Presentation night are now online on the front page of our website!

In my opening address to both events, I reflected on my observations of the 2010/11 season and noted the outstanding success of our junior teams with all but one of them making finals and with four of our teams playing off in Grand Finals!

Congratulations to the Under 16/1 side coached by Darren French and the Sturt Little League 1 team coached by Jamie Knuckey and Glen Young. Commiserations to the Under 14/1 side coached by Kris McArdle who went through the season undefeated to loose their only game in the Grand Final by one run! The team had a magnificent season so the Grand Final loss takes nothing away from that wonderful season. Commiserations also to the Under 16/2 side coached by Greg Milburn who also played off in a Grand Final.

In my address I thanked all the coaches, scorers, umpires and other officials who have put in so much for our club! Our Club could not function without you!

I noted how great it was to see Tom Becker and Tom Brice join with Paul Mildren in returning to our club as well as playing for the Bite and once again thanked Tony Catt for the extraordinary commitment he puts in to the position of A Grade coach. I also noted that our A Grade team was very unlucky to not being playing finals this year, with about seven games lost by one run and also the fact that we beat Grand Finalist Glenelg in the final home and away game. There is no doubt we would have given the Premiership a shake if we had been in the finals!

The team statistics for our Division 1 and 2 sides for the season 2010/11 are now available online at teams>seniors>stats

Grand Final Edition!

Congratulations to our two Premiership teams, namely Little League -1 Sturt and the Sturt Under 16/1 who both won in cliff hangers!

You can view photos online of these two victories by visiting our website front page!

Commiserations to the Sturt Under 14/1 side and the Sturt Under 16/2 side who both unfortunately missed out on winning the Grand Final.

Both these sides had great seasons and particularly the Sturt Under 14/1 side who went through the whole season undefeated to suffer their only loss on Grand Final day. I know the boys and coaching staff were gutted and as a club we certainly felt for you, however you have had a magnificent season and the Sturt Baseball Club is extremely proud of your efforts.

I had the chance on Sunday to spend some time at each of the Grand Finals we played in, which was particularly tricky for the Little League 1- Sturt Grand Final and the Under 16/2 Grand Final which were played at the same time!

I was very proud of all our teams, coaches and officials for the professional manner in which they went about competing in the Grand Finals. I believe all parents should be extremely proud of the manner in which all of our young players conducted themselves yesterday both on and off the field, in victory and defeat! It was also wonderful to see so many spectators at all four games!

On Friday night Baseball SA held their Junior Medal Presentation Night at the Woodville Town Hall. Sturt was once again well represented in the umpire vote tally!

Congratulations to Henry Brennan and Josh Tindall who were joint winners of the Under 16/2 Baseball SA Junior Medal! Well done to Errol Burns who came in at 5th place.

Congratulations to Sturt players who polled extremely well in other Divisions as listed below:

Little League-1 Sturt- Harrison Knuckey- 5th place
Little League 2 Division- Eli Egglestone, 2nd, Hugo Dahlen-Flight, 3rd and Oliver Crutchley, 4th.
Under 14/1 Sturt- Charlie Goldsworthy, 4th
Under 14/2 Sturt- Reuben Bishop, 2nd
Under 14/2 Saints- Max Staggs, 5th
Under 18 Sturt- Matthew MacBeth, 2nd, Dakota Mitchell, 5th

The Senior Medal Count for the Capps Medal is this Wednesday night and I wish the Sturt players all the very best of luck!

If you have not already done so please mark down in your diaries our End of Season Presentation weekend, with the Senior Presentation Night to be held on Saturday 2nd April, commencing at 7.30 pm. As per previous years Pizza will be available at $2 per slice.
The Junior Presentation Day will be held on Sunday 3rd April, commencing at 1.00 pm. As per previous years teams should organise to bring a basket afternoon tea for their team.

STURT 7 defeated WEST TORRENS 6
YOU LITTLE BEAUTY!

What a great game, just what a grand final should be. The guys showed true grit and determination to the very last pitch. What character they showed they all should be tremendously proud they way they play for each other, showing qualities that are important not in baseball alone but in life too!
With very few errors the boys hung in there and came home in a flurry! Matt Franke started the game for us, and was apparent from the get go he had an axe to grind and point to prove against his nemesis West Torrens! He had a day out throwing 91 pitches for 60 strikes, five strikeouts for three runs, very pleased for ya mate!
With Matt nearing his pitch count it was time to bring on Shaun Wright, he started off a little shaky then settling finding the strike zone, good effort thats all I could ask of him. Then Sam (the fireman) Roberts came on closing the dig and the next innings off when we needed it most!
The two important factors if we were to be successful today, were solid fielding, but more importantly we had to be ultra aggressive with the bats! The boys hit all day with eleven hits for the day, with four in the last dig when it mattered scoring the vital three runs to win the match!
Special mention to those guys who picked up hits in the last, Haz Lightbody, Matt Franke, Sam Roberts, Jesse Kemp and also Shaun Wright who picked up a valuable walk sucking up valuable pitches to finish Matt Scharenburg's pitch count!
What a Great day, Go You Sainters! It must be said the opposition put up a great fight, and both teams played in good spirits all day!
Thankyou to Josh Tindall and Henry Brennan apologies for not getting you guys into the game, you both are very much apart of the team and valuable members of our club, we would not have got this far without you guys!
Special thanks to those who helped out all year, you know who you all are! also thankyou Sue Brebner-Russ who scored today allowing Jo Trembath and Trish Gruehrer to watch their boys in peace! (ha ha)Thankyou to all the club patrons and supporters for coming out in force to get us over the line cheers!
WINNERS ARE GRINNERS! You guys deserve this hard work and dedication pays off Well Done to all!
HITS:Shaun Wright; Matt Franke, Tyler Horrigan; Sam Duffield 2; Harrison Lightbody; Sam Roberts; Jesse Kemp 1.

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Greg Milburn)

Sturt 3 were defeated by Adelaide 13
The game started well with the boys making some great plays in the field and holding their own with the bat, our game plan was to force a change of pitchers early this we achieved with the first pitcher but the guys let the second pitcher dominate them. All played well in the field to restrict them to eleven runs but we didn't bring enough confident batting to the game to win.
Great year boys thankyou.

Thanks to all including Will, Reuben, Josh , Max, Henry B parents coaches and supporters, was great to see you all there.

Sturt 7 were defeated by West Torrens 8
Tough day at the office today to go undefeated and lose your first game in the grand final really hurts. But this will only make the boys stronger in years to come. West Torrens bounced out well with two runs including a homer. We replied perfectly with 6 runs with great hitting from all but particularly Max and Jordan both hitting the ball one bounce over the fence, i thought yep today in our day but the scoring dried right up after that for us. West Torrens managed to score another 3 in the 3rd and both side went scoreless in the 4th. 6-5 our way going into the top 5 and the rain was getting heavier.
We held WT and managed to put on another run with some great base running by Matt and a superb hit by Zach E and the umpires called a rain delay and it was now bucketing down and i once again thought things are happening. But baseball can be cruel and the sun came back out and we started play.
Things were going to plan in the 6th holding West Torrens to no run, we didn't manage to score either finding it hard to hit West Torrens pitcher who at this stage looked in great form. 7-5 top 7 and all we need is three outs easy hey. NO not today, we have had this situation many times this season against West Torrens but today was their day they pushed a few hits and put pressure onto our boys which then forced a few uncharacteristic errors into our play and they scored 3 runs to take the lead. Charlie showed guts and started the bottom 7th with a cracking shot to left field and I had my number 4 and 5 up to bat again we all thought maybe just maybe, but again West Torrens pitcher dominated the dig after Charlies hit and we dropped short by one run.

Boys hold your heads high we had a great season and you all should be very proud of our achievements. Today hurt us bad I know but try and remember that pain and store it for the next Grand Final you are in and then use it to motivate yourself towards the win.
West Torrens great game today you are always a tough side to beat and a great side to compete against! Thankyou. Thanks to all the parents for their support this year and to all officials and of course to the Sturt Baseball Club.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young & Jamie Knuckey)

It is always special to play in a Grand Final and this was certainly a special day. After a solid win last Sunday and some good form in training this week we went into the game with the feeling that if we played at our best we would give the unbeaten West Torrens a good run for their money.

As visitors we started at bat and Simon as our lead of let them know we were there to play hard. Two hits to right field from Simon and Jack, a base on balls for Cam and good aggressive running saw us with two runs on the board. With his form improving all season we lead off on the mound with Nik and he turned in yet another outstanding performance. Nik has got to the stage where we are not concentrating on throwing strikes but on picking location. The stats for Nik were 4 innings, 4 runs given up, no walks and 6 K's. What a fabulous finish to the season for Nik.

The first five innings saw the lead changing from team to team with good batting and great defense by both teams. Thomas, Jack and Harrison all hit one through the cones for doubles and Braydon was a few feet short of a home run. It was no surprise however that West Torrens not going to give us the game and at the bottom of the fifth we were all tied up at 5 all.

In the sixth innings we were two down and no one on base with us not looking like adding further runs - but then we started the two down rally. Cameron on base with a walk, Thomas hit by pitch and doubles by Jack and Harrison saw us three runs up. Good defense by Simon, in particular, saw us keep the Eagles scoreless in the bottom of the sixth.

We likewise did not trouble the scorers in the seventh innings so had three runs to defend. As you might expect from the top team they were not going to give us the game easily and aggressive batting saw them take three runs off Thomas so the game tied up. Worse however, they had loaded bases and no one out. Any safe hit to win the game! Onto the mound comes Jack Bennetts - fair to say under enormous pressure. A K to start with gave us a glimmer of hope followed by an unbelievable double play. A line drive to Nik at first with a put out at the base followed by a throw to Braydon to catch the runner coming home to end the innings. We were still in the game!

Walks to Cameron and Jack followed by safe hits to Jamie and Nik saw us two runs up.

An impressively calm and solid infield saw us make three throws to first to end the game and Sturt the victors.

A win to a group of boys who never stopped believing in themselves for the whole game and played near flawless baseball for 8 innings under the pressure of a Grand Final . A special mention to the boys who came out and did get to play (much) today - your contribution over the year was as important to the team as anybody's and the support you gave your teammates throughout the final was a credit to you. I am sure your mates were appreciative of it and your parents proud of you. The coaches and parent were very impressed with the way the team performed and worked together.

Many thanks from the coaches to Jayme Bennetts for his superb job as manger, to Janet for scoring, to Bill for ground setups, to Locky for assistance at training and all the parents who helped us out on many occasions and in many ways. Hopefully as many as possible can make it to presentation day.

GO SAINTS.

What a character win by everybody involved! The team were focused on the job at hand despite a late start to the match.
The first 2 digs were tight, despite hits to Matt Franke and Sam Roberts, we were not able put a score on the board. The only real highlight in the 1st was Jesse's fantastic running back catch at left. Disappointingly we allowed them 2 unearned runs in the 2nd. The 3rd saw a lead off walk by Sean Wright eventually advanced by a hit to centre by Matt Franke, then scoring on a wild pitch for our only run of the dig. Matt was continuing to do a good job on the mound with 2 x K2's and one pop up fly to short holding them in the 3rd.
In the 4th we started to put bat to ball, eventually scoring 3 runs highlighted by a super double by Sam Duffield .
The 5th started well with Jayden Trembath and Max Guehrer drawing walks then being advanced by Sam D with runners brought home by Sean and Matt. This dig was highlighted by Jayden tagging a sloppy base runner a 2nd from a good throw by Henry Brennan at left to finish the innings.
In the 6th Sean Wright came on to the mound and held them to 1 run.
7th innings, Sam Roberts is now on the mound holding them scoreless leaving the scoreline at 7 all at the end of the 7th.
So, top 8 and we are playing for our season. Up steps Sam Roberts and singles. Next batter Tyler Horrigan, who smashes the ball to left for a double and with Sam running like the wind and crossing the plate to put us 1 run up.
Now, bottom 8 we have a job to do. Sam Roberts on the hill again with runners on 1st and 3rd, no outs. Things are really tight with our big group of Sturt supporters breathless. Their coach calls a sacrifice bunt trying to even the match. The batter pops up with Sam taking the catch then throwing to 3rd for a double play!
One out to go, last batter pops up with a catch to Sean at short. Game over, Grand Final next week!!
Fantastic job Matt Franke on the mound with 100 pitches over 5 innings including 9 strikeouts. Well done to Sam Roberts who put his hand up when things were tough to pitch the last 2 innings for 1 run with 29 pitches, (19 strikes and 10 balls.)

Hits: Matt Franke 3, Sam Roberts 2, Sam Duffield 2, Sean Wright 1, Jesse Kemp 1, Tyler Horrigan 1
Well done to all players, this was true Sturt character. Everybody did their bit when it mattered. Thanks to Henry Brennan and Josh Tindall, who played in the 16/2s then came to help us out. Your efforts are much appreciated.
Thankyou also to Dean Franke's help on the day, Peter Duffield's preparation during the week and effort on match day, Jo Trembath for scoring and to all of the supporters who came down south to cheer us on.
Lets all put in a good week on the training track and start preparing for a crack at a premiership. We owe it to ourselves, the club and parents/supporters to do our absolute best to bring a premiership cup to Sturt.
Good luck to all Sturt teams that are in the Grand Final next week. GO SAINTS!!!!
(Report by Rick Trembath)

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Greg Milburn)

Sturt 22 defeated Kensington 15
We got off to a bad start again , I would like to say more on the subject but these notes are probably censored! 9 runs down in the first and no answer with the bat and it's just as well we don't record fielding stats. The boys to their credit started to show signs of the ability we all know they have with the bat, though the fielding other than a few remarkable plays was average. Again aggressive base running (33 stolen bases ) started to tell on the opposition and we started to get our heads back into the game built up our CONFIDENCE and won.
Rupert took 2 fantastic catches at RF , Alex a great throw out to 3rd , Lewis with his solid performance at 1st lifted the team , and of course Henry Saundry with that in ground home run.
Thanks to Henry B, Josh Tindall ( well pitched under pressure ) Will Hill fantastic triple to left , Jordan McArdle ending the game with a great play and Mitchell Lightbody , parents and coaches for your support.
Boys all you need is DETERMINATION and BELIEF in your ability both as a team and as individuals to take this flag , their not going to give it to you your going to have to take it bring that extra 10 % to practice and the final and it's yours.

Under 14/1 Sturt Coach (Coach: Kris McArdle)  Sponsored by: Jock Gilbert Real Estate  McArdle Family

Sturt 17 def Woodville 2
Congratulations boys we have earnt our right into the Grand Final! Today we played aggressive baseball hitting the ball hard and making the basic outs for our pitchers. Mitch threw close to a complete game today dropping short by one hitter. Mitch struck out 6 hitters and only conceived two walks and 2 hits dominating the woodville hitters, great job mate. He was backed up well in the field especially by Sam Cav making some great plays at third and Henry taking a game changing catch in right field. Offensively we hit the ball hard and flat, we registered 20 hits as a team and all players hit the ball well today. Max had a day in the box getting himself 3 doubles and 1 single going 4 from 4, twice Max hit the ball behind the runners to gain some RBI's coaches delight. Stuart and Jordan just dropped short of the homerun fence Max, Mitch, Sam, Charlie, Matt, Zach E and Jordan all registered multiple hits for the day and the rest of the line up had great at bats and also registering safe hits; all-round great hitting by all.
Boys this is the type of baseball we can and need to play next week. See ya all on the track and lets fire up and enjoy the grand final week.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young & Jamie Knuckey)

Little League 1-Sturt 9 defeated Southern Districts 5
Semifinals saw Sturt LL major up against a very solid Southern Districts team. In the minor rounds we were 1 all, an 11-3 loss and a 13-1 win. It seemed it would all come down to how we performed under finals pressure. We couldn't have got away to a better start with hits to Simon, Thomas, Jack, and Jamie D - 5 runs on the board. Although the batting dropped off a bit from our first innings effort good concentration saw our boys soak up a lot of pitches and aggressive running allowed us to keep the scoreboard ticking over. This was exemplified by Nick E who had a 7 pitch at bat and by hanging around allowed Simon to score on a passed ball - sometimes it's the little things that help win games. In terms of pitching we dug deep and this helped us prevail. Nik Sas started on the mound and as usual gave us 100% effort and great results. His three innings yielded only two runs with a 75% strike ratio - a great effort at any time but particularly when you are under finals pressure. Thomas gave us three innings, three runs conceded but good pitching to keep us ahead through the pressure period of the game. 5 k's reflected how hard he was throwing the ball. So - 9-5 up with SD to bat - all we need was to hold them out. Harrison and Jack teamed up to finish the game on the mound and great fielding by Simon saw us victorious. Next week we have to go out blazing with the bats, an aggressive approach in the box can see us win the flag - bring it on West Torrens.
Hits Thomas 2, Harry 1, Sam 1.

Saints LL 8 lost Hawks 12
The boys came up against the top team and unfortunately they didn't bring their top game with them. Our boys were not able to concentrate properly at times when they needed to be fully focussed for each play. Missed catches, poor decisions in base running, basic fielding mistakes and undisciplined batting all add up to inconsistency and you cannot afford this when you play the top team. It was a pity really because at the end we were not that far off the mark. What the Hawks did show us about being a good team was their spirited enthusiasm, their disciplined play, excellent fielding, concentration and focus on each and every play, aggressive base running, ability to get bat on ball and most of all, their consistency. We can do all of this but we do not do it consistently and this was the only difference in the overall analysis.
Reed hit a nice double and Eli a single while Isaac did a good job as the catcher.
Next week it is our "mini" grand final against the other Sturt team - good luck boys !
Thanks to Mitch for his enthusiastic coaching all season and to Lynne and Dave as our regular scorers, Brett for umpiring and to John for his specialist coaching and encouragement of the boys. To all the parents who made the long trip to Christies Beach 2 weeks in a row - well done for your support of your boys - they have come a long way this season and finished up the year as a much improved playing unit than when they started. This is always a good reflection on the coach too !!

Finals Week One

It was great to see so many supporters at the Club on Sunday to cheer on the three junior teams playing at Norman Reserve. Both the Under 18 and Under 16/1 sides won their games, with the the Under 16/2 side unfortunately loosing, but they have another chance next week! The Under 14/1 side won what must have been a wonderful exhibition of baseball with a scoreline of 2-1. Unfortunately Jamie Bishop's Under 14/2 side went down in a heartbreaker 13-12. The Little League 1- Sturt side defeated Kensington 17-3.

The Schedule for next week's games is available on the front page of our website or from your mobile phones through Saints Mobile edition. We will have two games at home with SBC U14/1 - Sturt vs Woodville playing at 10.00 am and then followed by SBC U16/2 - Sturt vs Kensington, commencing at 12.30 pm.

As you all know it was a long shot for our Division 1 side to make finals this year as a number of results would have had to go our way to get into the top six. Unfortunately the results did not go our way and this ends our Division 1 season. It is very disappointing as the boys have done a wonderful job this season and I think loosing six games by one run really just shows how close we were to the action! There is no doubt that if we had the opportunity to play in finals with our full strength team we would have really made our mark on the finals series.

Nevertheless I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the boys for their commitment this season and particularly to our A Grade Coach Tony Catt. It is really hard to find the words to adequately describe Tony's total commitment to our club and the hours he spends with the boys and with his outstanding preparation for training etc. Your huge commitment to our club and the expertise you bring to the coaching role is greatly appreciated by all of us at the Club. Our time will come!

I would also like to direct you to this week's Featured Player of the Week, Henry Wood from the from the Sturt U14-1 side. We have had a number of the junior players recently complete profiles and these will be featured on a regular basis. You can access the Player Profiles from the front page of the website either through the top menu about>player profiles or clicking on the icon under the Premiership table. The Profiles are also available on Saints Mobile edition for those of you with internet access on your mobile phones.

Well the guys were excited and switched for their first final.
Matt Franke got us of to a great start, with Jayden Trembath turning a double with Sam Roberts to set the tone of the game early! Matt continued to pitch well holding them scoreless for the first couple! The battersbox was great today with most picking up a hit or two, with Jesse Kemp, Tyler Horrigan, and Sam Roberts all picking up three hits each, including a cracking Hit and Run from Sam!(assuming of course he picked it up), and a timely safe bunt from Tyler!
Shaun Wright finished solidly including four strikeouts and will be better for it for this weeks game! Harrison Lightbody worked better this week, behind the dish all game in fairly hot conditions!
The team all came to play today with everyone's commitment for a common goal much better, everybody up and hitting early, keep stepping it up again this week in order to reach the ultimate game!
Well Done Fellas!
Special thanks to Lewis Brideson for sticking around to help out cheers, also thanks to Foxy for umpiring thanks mate!

Yet another tight game between WT and Sturt, we managed to come out winners but this one could have gone either way. Today was not the day to try and hit big, the wind was blowing straight into the hitters face and any fly balls just sat up to be caught. Both teams pitchers dominated in the first 5 digs and it took us until the bottom 5 to score some runs. We led of this dig with a walk by Zach E, Stuart pushed a bunt and forced the error, runners on first and second. Zach L then placed the perfect bunt to fill up the bases. WT then made their first pitching change, with their infield playing right in Charlie batted with purpose and didn't help out the new pitcher and drew the walked for our first run. Mitch L came to the plate and did what was needed and hit the ball deep into left field for a zac fly, second run scored. Unfortunately we couldn't score anymore runs in this dig. To our credit we keep WT scoreless in the 6th but also could score ourselves in the 6th. Top 7 2-0 up, WT first batter line drived the ball and then their second batter put down a useful bunt and we just missed the out at second. None out runners on 1st and 2nd. Mitch once again showed his strong character and kept his nerve when the next batter bleed one over second baseman's head to score their run but Henry Wood fresh off the bench was on his toes and charged this ball hard and throw out the batter at first, well done mate first out with runner on 3rd score 2-1. Mitch then struck out the next hitter and got the final out with a pop up to short great catch Sam. Boys well done today we have shown we can hold our nerve and get outs with runners on. Special mentions to Charlie G who pitched a superb game to his full count and Mitch finishing the last 3 digs again under a little pressure but you wouldn't have noticed. Thanks and well done to Brodie Mac for sitting on the pine most of the day and then comes on and gets one of the 2 safe hits of the day, Henry W also sat today with no complaints and came on to make that great heads up play in right field. Good work to all for playing the bunt play so well today and also executing the bunt offensively. See you on the track and remember we play as good as we train so lets train the house down.

Under U14/2 Sturt - (Coach: Jamie Bishop) Sponsored by: DFK Gray Perry

Adelaide 13 defeated U14/2 - Sturt 12
The game was an exciting ding dong battle from the 1st pitch - with the lead changing a number of times. Top of the 1st saw good contact from our guys.. Angus particularly hit a great double to bring in our first run.. but then put outs stopped us. Much the same for innings 2 when Dan earned a walk and then steals pushed him round to score on a passed ball.
Defense was solid - RJ pitched really well giving up only 1 hit and 1 BB for the total 1st and 2nd innings - so 2 nil up.
We went 3 up 3 down in the 3rd - they snuck 1 in on a wild throw to first that then came in on a muffed fly… 2-1 up.
Top 4th saw discipline in the box.. 2 walks and aggressive stealing, then a good hit by Dan and 2 more walks, saw us get 4 in. Angus hit his 2nd solid safe hit but got marooned. 7-1 up! Another wild throw to 1st by us saw another run scrambled in - so 7 to 2 in the bottom of the 4th.
Top of the 5th and 2 walks with steals and passed balls got us another 2 runs, but then 2 KC's stopped us short! Bottom 5th, and they started to make contact as RJ tired … 2 slap hits dropped in before another K2 - then the baulk call rattled him and 2 more infield dribblers Saw 3 in… Time for a pitching change and Angus stepped onto the hill. Throwing hard and accurately he gave up 1 centrefield hit before throwing 2 strike outs to stop the innings… still up with the score at 9-7.
Top 6th and Fraser (finally) had one of his many hits go his way - sharp shot to left and then stole bases to 3rd… but a dubious call at home on another passed ball saw him out and us still on 9 runs…
Angus walked a couple so we switched to Tommy to close and he started with a strike out that heartbreakingly got passed Dan and went to the fence … and then wild throws scored 3 before the damage was stopped.
Top 7th and 1 down… Damon earned a walk, RJ smacked a strong left field shot and scored him… Dan redeemed himself with a centrefield double and scored RJ! Evan hit well and got Dan in but was thrown out for 1 away… Tommy punched a centrefield shot and got on and hussled around to 3rd… but then a strike out and a fly ball and we were done - with 2 runs up! Was it enough?
Tommy tried his best… but a soft shot inside centrefield, a walk ..and then a bleeder hit bunt saw bases loaded! A safe shot to centrefield brought in 2 to tie it up.. then a strike out and a fly to short and with 2 out and a runner on 2nd, we had the chance to go extra innings… until 1 last hit to centrefield finished us off! Time and game! Great spirit, great game… shame about the result!
Reuben Bishop (1-2, 2 BB), Tommy Bishop (1-3 1 BB), Fraser Crameri (1-5) Mac Cross (0-2) Stewart Gardiner (0-1), Damon Gray (0-1+ 3BB), William Hill (0-3), Daniel Ortiz (2-3, 1 BB), Tyson Ottaway (0-3) Angus Read (2-2, 1 DBL 2 BB), Evan Taylor (0-3, BB) A terrific season with a great bunch of boys and parents/cousins (thanks Matt Mulryan!) - fantastic support from all ….as scorers, coaches, managers and even constant coffee creators! It's a pleasure to be involved!

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young & Jamie Knuckey)

Little League 1 - Sturt 17 d Kensington 3
First week of finals and having finished 3rd we were scheduled to play the 6th placed Kensington at Flinders. The boys turned up keen and ready to start our finals campaign. We hit the ground running and it is fair to say we never looked back. Our first out for the day was a good outfield catch to our right fielder Sam running in to complete the take with effortless poise - that set the standard for the fielding for the day. The team had an errorless defensive performance for the day with the whole team contributing. Both Nicks looked very solid at first base with Nik Sas completing some athletic catches and put outs. We needed to use only two of our pitchers with Jack starting - 4 innings, giving up only three runs, one walk and getting four strikeouts. We brought Thomas on in the fifth and due to the mercy rule he had to only complete the single innings with only one more run scored.
Our batting and base running was what we have strived for all season. Safe hits to Simon (3), Thomas (2), Jack (2), Braydon (2), Sam (2), Jamie D (1), Nik (1) and Cam (1). All the boys were aggressive on the bases and allowed us to score extra runs by putting pressure on the field - well done. Thanks to Jamie L and Nick E for coming in at the 5th dig and therefore only getting limited game time due to the mercy. Getting to finals has been a team effort as was our win this week. While this was a comprehensive win we will need to maintain the intensity next Sunday against a better team at Southern Districts. Jamie K and I are confident if we keep up this standard of baseball we can go all the way.
Final Score Sturt 19 - Kensington 4.

Newsletter 27/02/11

Yesterday we celebrated the 20 year reunion for players who played in our last Premiership against Glenelg. The weather was beautiful and we had fantastic game day commentary from Garry Wood and Bruce Packer as our ground announcer. Premiership Coach Neil Stewart introduced the players and Mal Watts then had a few words to say about Neil "Spider" Stewart which really illustrated why Neil is a legend of our club as well as being a Life Member and Hall of Fame inductee. It was great to see nearly all the players from that winning side reunited again for the day and night! Jeff "Snorky" Nicholas once again did a wonderful job behind the camera and even managed to get in front of the camera a couple of times given that he was a member of that Premiership side! Once again photos are online on the front page of our website.

It was a huge day for our club and our Division 1 side really turned it on defeating League leaders Glenelg 3-1!
We now have to wait on the results from next week where we have a double bye to see if we get to play finals this year.

Special thanks to Spiro Magoulianos who did a magnificent job cooking that very tasty lamb on the spit was enjoyed by many of us!

Thanks also to David Lee who this year has spent many hours making the ground look magnificent and I know he put in a special effort to make sure the ground looked magnificent for the weekend. The ground is without doubt the best prepared in the league! Your huge committment and care that you have taken in preparing the ground is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to our junior teams with all but one making finals this year and with the Under U14/2 Saints just missing out!

Game times for the junior finals are now online on our website and also you can view them on the Baseball SA website.

Best of luck to all the junior teams competing in finals this coming weekend.

I would also like to direct you to this week's Featured Player of the Week, Tommy Bishop from the from the Sturt U14-2's "Sluggers" side. We have had a number of the junior players recently complete profiles and these will be featured on a regular basis. Sturt 3 defeated Glenelg 1
This was a must win game to keep our slim finals chances alive. The day was also the 20th year reunion for our 1991 Premiership team so we were prepared to put up a good showing against the team that i believe is the benchmark for this season.
Paul Mildren took the pitching duties and was untroubled for much of his 8 and one third innings of work. He threw 113 pitches, 7 strikeouts and no walks in an excellent outing for the Saints. Tom Becker closed proceedings out in clinical fashion.
Offensively, Craig Watts, Tom Brice and Dane Adkins showed the way and made sure we had something to defend.
In the field we were sensational, Foxy throwing out a runner at the plate from centrefield, Youngy catch go back over his head, Bricey in foul territory, Turner pulling up a certain hit up the middle just to mention a few. We have talked all year about momentum and from the first innings we took it and kept it. Great effort boys - way to stick together and finish the minor round on an excellent note.
This team is easy to coach. They are quite simply the best bunch of blokes. They make my life much easier with the strong work ethic, team spirit and good attitude shining through in all of them. Thanks boys. The journey this season has been fantastic and I sincerely hope we get a chance in the finals series as we will make a lot of other clubs very, very nervous!

East Torrens 17 d Sturt 9
For the last game of the season we played top of the table East Torrens at their home ground. This game would make no difference to us being in the finals or not as we were already out of contention. So the plan was to go out and have fun. In the first innings we sent birthday boy Doc (Glenn Young) to bat first and get the ball rolling, unfortunately for Doc is was strike 1, 2, 3 down swinging. We had 3 up and down, into the field we go to see if we could hold them to a zero as well. Rocket (Ron Taylor) started on the mound and they hit the ball hard and to the holes and had plated 4 runs before we got the 3 outs. Our second at bat saw only the one safe hit coming from Coach Small, but we again had the big donut for the innings. East Torrens again plated 3 in their second at bat. Our third at bat all we wanted was to hit the ball and at least plate one run, we start with a walk from Ditsy (Ditmar Guehrer) and then a hit to short stop for the first out at second, back to the top of the line up and up comes birthday boy Doc for his second at bat, Spider (Neil Stewart) on first and we are still looking for our first run, Doc hits into a double play and ends of our innings, not one of us on the bench gave Doc a hard time at all I must say. In the bottom of the third we had the Bear (Barry Lunnon) on the mound and East Torrens plated the maximum 7 runs to put them 14 - 0 up after three. In our fourth at bat we again were looking to score a run and it finally came after Wild Thing (Norm Sluga) had a little roller to third for safe and then Wulffy (Don Wulff) put one to the fence for a stand up double and Wild Thing scored from 1st. The Bear then moved Wulffy to third and in scoring position but was thrown out at first, the Coach (Smally) then hit to centerfield to score Wulffy and get safe at first. Coach Small also scored to make it 3 runs for the innings, we then held ET to 2 runs in their fourth at bat. In the fifth we were able to plate four runs after Doc collected a walk, stole second on a wild pitch and came home on Fame's (Adrian Hill) hit to centerfield. Fame scored on Bears double to centerfield and Smally walked, Daisy (Chris Day) then hit a double to right field to score the Bear and Smally went to third only to score on the lose ball at second, in the bottom of the dig ET scored 1. Our last at bat we made 2 runs before the 3 out and game was called. I do have the score book this week and will be able to give safe hits but I would like to point out that Myself (Coach Small) and Fame (Adrian Hill) batted 1000 for the day.
I hope all the Div 6's guys enjoyed the season as I did, only wish we had finished higher to play some finals then again there is always next year.

Always a tough assignment playing southern districts at home, I thought the gods were with us when Shaun Wright smashed the first pitch of the game to right field!
Unfortunately it wasn't to last with only 2 hits in the first three digs, and basic baseball errors in the field and some excellent attacking play from the opposition, we were set to play catch up baseball.
Our pitches on the day did their job, especially Matt Franke who worked well, but just needed a lot more support from his team behind him! Shaun Wright finished off and did ok for us under sufference!
Again too little too late we woke the bats up in the last with 5 hits.
With the home and away season done, we look forward to this weeks final, a big congratulations on finishing third placed. With everyone committed, prepared, awake and ready to play the guys are capable of mixing it up with any of the oppositions! Good Luck!

Congratulations boys we have taken out the minor premiership and to go undefeated is a great achievement, but that's the end of talking about that as all we have really achieved so far is a chance at finals. Today we met the bottom side, playing on a very small ground i asked the boys to not forget all the things we have been working on and try and go for the fence and hence pop up. We did hit the ball hard and flat and picked up 20 hits as a team for the day, many line drives to the fence and well done Zach E for his big homer over the fence. defensively we where not really challenged with both Zach L and Brodie Mac both dominating on the mound. I must mention that our base running was very lazy and i hope this was just due to the fact we were not pressured by the opposition. Boys as i have said all along the minor round is now behind us and our next challenge is the finals, we need to keep a lid on it and play hard basic baseball to achieve our main goal, do not get ahead of yourselves. See you all at training ready to work hard and remain focus as the best part of the season is now upon us, let go boys.

Sturt (18) defeated Saints(11)
How appropriate that the final regular game of the season be against the McClure Mafiosi…. the talk had been talked… so it was now time ….
A tight up and down game throughout… to their credit, they came out swinging - and pitching.. and held us right up until the end.
Huge improvement from the Saints over the year - congrats to them!
Stewie, Gus Tommy and Reuben all pitched with enthusiasm - Stu came good in the 1st with just 2 runs allowed in… and then smoked them in the 2nd innings!
They then did the same to us in the top of the 3rd, stopping us for no runs in.
Angus took the ball in the bottom of the 3rd… and although he threw hard, had some location issues, so I went to Tommy - but after a couple of hits and walks, it was time to try and shut them down. RJ?
Nope… HPB, a walk and then Max hit him for strong dbl! They had 7 runs in.. had gone ahead by 2 .. mmmmmmmmmmm……………………………
So… out came the bribe box… chockie bars for all - even Master Gray the batboy! And like typical sugar charged teenagers, out they came with bats and steals and muscled in 6 runs …
And then RJ gunned them down 3 up 3 down (inc 2 strike outs)! For the top of the 5th everyone helped themselves again and grabbed a mercy 7 score…. And then after a couple of walks that came in the lads stopped them - I must say with a terrific throw by Tyson from the dish to 2nd… sweet shot!
Just to mention - it's great to see Fraser back - gunning down 4 from short to first - as sharp as ever.. and batting 1000 with 2 from 2 - 1 deep double to left.
And it was a great doubles day -stand up 2 base shots to Reuben, Stewie, Dan as well … and Angus's double landed 6 inches from the home run fence.. big shot!
Also - Tyson finished with 3 from 3 and a walk - great stuff! And finally, big day for Mac Cross who laid down a lovely bunt that only went foul when the slope dragged it out.. and he still got on twice with walks and scored both times - well done!
Reuben Bishop (2-4, 1 dbl), Tommy Bishop (1-2 ½ game), Fraser Crameri (2-2 + 2 BB 1 dbl) Mac Cross (0-2 + 2BB) Stewart Gardiner (1-3 (Dbl), 2BB), Damon Gray (2-3 + BB), William Hill (1-3 + BB), Daniel Ortiz (1-2 Dbl!), Tyson Ottaway (3-3 + BB) Angus Read (2-4), Evan Taylor away

Under U14/2 Saints - (Coach: John McClure)

U14/2 Saints 11 lost to Sturt 18
The big day arrived, perfect conditions, capacity crowd and the hot dogs flowing. After fielding calls from bookies as far away as Mumbai on pitch conditions it was a pleasure to settle into the dugout with the team and begin concentrating on the task of staring down the evil empire. Tensions were high and the atmosphere electric.
The lads took to the field with the adrenaline flowing, concentration at the max and the willingness to take one for the team. First innings saw an arm wrestle begin, Jack pitching well and the field backing up particularly with a great put out at 3rd by Max and Ty. A hit from Max and an RBI from Jack was enough to see the good guys leading 2-1.
End of the 2nd, bats fail and we give up 4 runs with Sturt hitting two big double baggers. Trailing 5-2 and we're looking wobbly.
The third saw Jack on the money and well backed up. Ethan takes a difficult high ball and doesn't involve his scone this week. Good catch. Max continues dominating and takes 2 high foul balls catches to wrap up the innings. Not much of him and not much he can't do. Superstar this season. No score and strike me pink the batting steps up, Ty hits a well-deserved drive to centrefield and Alex gets one to short and suddenly we're cookin'. Couple of walks, excellent running and we're 9-5 on a sunny afternoon and not a bad day at all. Panic envelopes the Sturt camp, bookies start ringing, computers consulted - it's all happening.
Sturt hit back and score 6, four hits and it's 11-9 and that's when the wheels rolled off. Sturt stepped up with the bat 9 hits to our 1 in the second half. Pitching and batting was superior and that's the ball game. Well-deserved win by Sturt and we certainly gave the cage a rattle even if it was batting practice. It was an enjoyable contest and that's really the pinnacle of kids sport. A match played in the right spirit.
From our perspective it was a bit of the same old same old. Up 9-5 and we managed yet again to grab defeat from not necessarily the jaws of victory again but certainly closer than the score may suggest. What coach hasn't lamented that? Best of luck to Jamie and the Sturt boys in the finals.
And so ends Season 2010/11 for Saints U14/2. Finished 4-10, rookie coach and rookie team looking forward to bigger and brighter things in 2012. Special thanks to Jo Paddick (Ty's Mum) for scoring 13 of the 14 weeks. Sensational effort and much appreciated by all the team and coaches. Special thanks to Mitch, Craig, Richard, and Debbie for their help on match and training days. Brett Eggleston for his help at training, match days and in particular numerous umpiring displays that had us learned brethren nodding.
Thanks also to Kylie Haar for umpiring and helping at training. To all the parents who supported all the games, in particular the number one ticket holders Sue and Krystina thank you very much. If I've forgotten anyone I'm sorry. It takes a lot of people to make a good team and I would like to think we had a pretty good season. Cheers!

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young & Jamie Knuckey)

Little League 1-Sturt 23 defeated Goodwood 6
The end of the regular season was a good time to see some of our boys hitting their straps. We had played Goodwood twice before with 14-4 and 12-2 wins. On this occasion the team managed a 23-6 win with one of our best team performances for the year.
Highlights included an excellent pitching performance by Nik Sas - four innings, only one walk, 7 K's and only three runs given up. Nik was supported very well by the field with Thomas, Simon and Jack working together to get an out with every ball hit to our infield. In fact our field did not make a single error in 5 innings of baseball. Our offensive game is also coming good with 15 hits in total and 19 of our runs being scored from safe hits. Batting award for the day went to Harrison with 4 hits for the day, Jack not far behind with three. Nik and Simon picking up two and Cam, Thomas, Braydon and Jamie one each. We need to keep focused over the next three weeks, Jamie and I both believe we have a real chance of the flag if we can play at our best under finals pressure.

A stirring victory by the boys - a fantastic job under lots of pressure but they came home with the prize.
A great game by Eli in all facets of the game, Ozzie pitched well in his dig while most of the boys got bat on ball in at least one innings which was a great improvement.
A short match description that doesn't reflect the intrigue and gutsy performance - my apologies.
