It was great to see a big roll up of our Sponsors and supporters to the Sponsors Day held at Sturt yesterday. Photos from the day are now online on the front page of our website. It was a great day at Sturt with our A Grade team winning both games and keeping their finals hopes alive! It was also good to see Sam Day who dropped in for a visit before he flew back to the Gold Coast! We will all follow Sam's progress in the AFL with a high degree of interest! Sam tells me that he is currently on a special food regime where he needs to eat four main meals a day and then have three snacks as well!

Please remember that this Sunday there will be a special event recognising the 20 year anniversary of our last A Grade Premiership. The majority of the players from the Premiership team will be at the club and will be presented to the crowd before the main game. The date has been chosen to coincide with Sturt playing Glenelg who were our opponents 20 years ago. We are also having a lamb on the spit for dinner that night for $10 a plate which will include a selection of salads, so please make every effort to get to the club to not only celebrate this great anniversary for our club but to cheer on our Division 1 side who are fighting for a place in this year's finals!

I would also like to direct you to this week's Featured Player of the Week, Arno Norrito from the from the U14/2 - Saints side. We have had a number of the junior players recently complete profiles and these will be featured on a regular basis. You can access the Player Profiles from the front page of the website either through the top menu about>player profiles or clicking on the icon under the Premiership table. The Profiles are also available on Saints Mobile edition for those of you with internet access on your mobile phones.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Sturt 0 lost to Goodwood 1
The make up game from the double header was played midweek. Tom Brice took the hill for the Saints and the game turned into a very tight pitchers duel as we faced up against the Goodwood import, Mark Brackman. Tom threw very well and was unlucky to give up a run in the 5 innings of work. Lewis Townsend closed out the 6th for us and continues to adapt to any role we give him. This is a good sign of a maturing pitcher. Goodwood only picked up 5 hits for the night.
We managed to put together some opportunities offensively but against good sides and in tight games you need to take your half chances. We failed to do this.
A good game of baseball with Dane Adkins playing very well once again at second base.

Hits - Brice 2, Fox, Turner

SUNDAY
Sturt 7 defeated East Torrens 2
Every game was a must win for the rest of the season to have any hope of making finals. A very simple equation for the group.
Paul Mildren took the mound for the first time since Adelaide Bite duties finished and was in command all day. He finished the game throwing 7 innings and only giving up 7 hits and a couple of earned runs.
Offensively, Craig Watts and Dan Lee really took charge for the Saints both finishing with 3 hits.
Great start to the day.
Hits - Watts 3, Lee 3, Turner 2, Fox 2, Holmes, Carter, Young

Sturt 12 defeated East Torrens 2
Facing yet another import from an opposition club was going to be a good challenge for the group. Tom Becker took the hill for the Saints and threw very well only give up 5 hits in 6 innings of work and completely dominated the ET hitting lineup. The boys put some back to back hits together and kept the scoreboard ticking over all game to eventually run out easy winners. This win keeps our finals chances alive.
This was a good build up for the last game of the season against Glenelg at home this weekend. With the 20 year reunion of the Saints on this Sunday it promises to be a great atmosphere with a big crowd. You can be assured that the Saints will come out firing for a playoff spot this season. Make sure you get down to the ground to watch!

Southern Districts 10 defeated Sturt 2 Well this was the game we need to win to keep our finals chance a live and unfortunately we could not get up and win, final score being 10 - 2 down. Again we had a few errors which helped Southern District to some runs and made it a little harder to stay with them. Rat started on the mound and after the first it looked like it was going to be a tight game until the errors. Wulffy and Bear hit the ball hard for no luck and again Fame found a hole out a left field this time after a high fly ball had him going this way and that before he found the hole and ended up with grass on his face. With the normal couch umpiring for the day it was up to Wulffy to bring home the bacon but all he ended up with was some road kill. With our season over we can go out and enjoy the last game and have some fun before preseason training starts in two weeks.
I again forgot the score book so can not report on safe hits.

STURT 7 drew GGCD 7
We got off to a slow start with the bats, where they came out firing. It wasn't to be Shauns day on the hill, Sam Roberts and Matt Franke finished off the game well. The guys played ok but let themselves down with some poor decision making in the field, and not aggressive enough in the batterbox early in the piece.
Shaun Wright hit well all day picking up three hits, Max Guehrer's triple was nice, and Jesse Kemps home run over centrefield was awesome in the last. Harrison Lightbody struck the ball well on multiple occassions but was robbed twice.
In what was a spirited comeback in the last dig, I can only ponder what might of happened if we woke up a little earlier!
We have one more game before finals and will be looking for an improved start this week!

Sturt 4 Def West Torrens 2
Tight tussle between 1st and 2nd, which began as a battle of the pitchers with WT pitcher pitching very well and holding us to 0 for the first four digs. Charlie matched him throwing 4 excellent dig giving up one unlearnt run in the 4th. Great job again today Charlie picking up 8 strikeouts and only giving up 2 safe hits you are really showing talent on the hill. Score was 1-0 WT way after 4 digs, we started the 5th with a walk and then Sam got on with a error and the scene was set runners on first and second with none out. Wt made their second pitching change and got themselves a strikeout, but Mitchell managed to steal third and home and even up the ball game. Jordan then drove Sam home with a great shot to right and we had finally taken the lead. Jordan stole second and Matt Amberg steps up to the plate and BANG he put a massive ball over the homerun fence to put us 4-1 up. Well done Matt always believe in yourselves and things like this will happen. Mitchell then takes the hill and gets the three out with no score, unfortunately we couldn't trouble the scoreboard in the top six. We needed three out to win the game and guarantee top spot, Mitchell was very focused and cool on the mound even though WT first two hitters got safe hits and scored 1 run to make it 4-2. Jordan throw out a runner at 3rd trying to steal, one out. Mitch then walked the next batter but still remained focused and struck out the next batter, 2 out runner on first and tying run at the plate. Mitch then sealed the deal by picking off the runner at first to get us the win. Boys great job today we really had to work for this one and showed we can come from behind and continue to work hard till the end. Plenty of work still in front of us if we are going to beat this side again, lets keep pushing hard at training and play our game to the end.

Goodwood 6 defeated U14/2 - Sturt 3
A 12.30pm game at Flinders is a good time to play there.. (thanks Dits and U16-1s for setting up.. and Greg and the U16-2's for packing it away! )
We had the crème de la crème of umpiring too… Jimmy D was provided by the SABL which was a pleasant surprise.. and good old Frogg Foster had agreed to come out for us and so stayed and base umpired with enthusiasm many thanks to both!
Up against the hard throwing Goodwood, we knew we had to work into counts and push for the opportunities. We started with Angus on the hill and he had a shaky start with 3 walks before getting his rhythm and finding the zone and striking out the next batter. He managed to stop them for 3 runs in with some good plays. Unfortunately, our batters couldn't get a start and 3 up 3 down for strike outs. Angus came into his own next innings and stopped them 3 up 3 down with 2 strike outs. They then did the same to us - 3 up, 3 down, 3 strike outs! Angus again came back hard… but another HPB and then 2 lucky flares to right brought in 2 more before we stopped them. 3rd innings for us, and finally Evan made contact… but was a put out at 1st.. plus 2 strike outs! So! after 3 innings, 9 up, 9 down! RJ then came on and stopped them in the 4th and then allowed just 1 more in the 5th… S0! 6 nil down -and so the boys took a breath and started again -Tyson drew a walk and then Damon pulled out the 1st hit of the day for us! Aggressive stealing got them both came in - 6-2.
In the bottom of the last chasing 4 runs and them on their 2nd pitcher we came back and rattled them with walks, steals and a hit by RJ ... but an unfortunate double play stopped us just as we were winding up - no matter - we will see them in the finals we hope!
Reuben Bishop (1-1 ½ game), Tommy Bishop (0-2), Mac Cross (0-1 ½ game) Stewart Gardiner (0-2), Damon Gray (1-2 + BB), William Hill (0-1 + BB), Daniel Ortiz (0-2), Tyson Ottaway (0-2 + BB) Angus Read (0-3), Evan Taylor (0-2) Fraser Crameri 3rd base coach
Next week is the final round up against the Saints.. go Sturt!

Under U14/2 Saints - (Coach: John McClure)

West Torrens 14 d U14/2 - Saints 4
In hindsight this wasn't a great performance - could have been better and could have been worse but the lads can take heart from the improvements we're made over the season. Facing a team that had a 2 game 32-1 score line against us we managed to hold our heads up and put together some good plays, it's just that we need to do it consistently and all at the same time to beat the teams above us.
The struggle with the bat continued. Only gathering 4 safe hits are unlikely to win games at this level. Disappointing was the amount of watching after pleading with the lads to "have a go". The umpiring was consistent and the instructions were clear but we had too many suffering inaction. I'd rather see the boys go down swinging than hoping for a walk and I'll never have a go at someone who's having a crack.
The brightest light amongst the batting gloom was none other than the pot stirrer himself JJ who got bat on ball in both his innings and helped himself to a safe hit and an RBI. He simply needs to match his enthusiasm with the bat to the glove/ball and anything is possible. Max, Conor, and Ethan all got safe hits. Needed a few more.
The pitching was mixed. Cool, damp and gusty conditions were not conducive to quality play. Max pitched with his usual laser like accuracy of over 60%. Always gives 100%, supports his team mates and leads from the front. At times Max wasn't supported in the field with some basic errors, and that's the reason we need to concentrate at practice. Train like you play. To WT's credit they hit the ball well including a terrific LF homer to leave us trailing 9-3 after 2, a complete reversal from last week.
Ethan and Conor went from roosters to feather dusters. After a couple of good pitching performances in the previous weeks both had the radars askew and were unable to hit the mark. It happens but the pleasing aspect is that they both want to do well for the team, tried their hearts out and that's great. Jack came on to the mound to have his first throw in quite a few games all fired up and closed out the innings and game. Another lad who listens, has passion and just as importantly always has a crack.
Overall the concentration was pretty good, some good and bad decision making, good plays and comedy stuff but that's to be expected. I'm enjoying the ride and I think the players are. They still keep turning up. We need to re-group , practice hard and be prepared to stare down the evil empire in next week's end of season derby (for us anyway) at Flinders on Sunday. Tickets available at the gate.

Sturt 16 d Kensington 9
With finals fast approaching the boys were challenged to play with an attitude and value set required to perform over the coming weeks. They responded with an impressive all-round display - including the best team batting performance of the year.
A positive attitude in the first innings produced some fine hits, combined with aggressive base running produced 4 runs. Harrison started on the mound throwing well with Jack behind the plate doing well in a new role and combined with excellent fielding allowed us to take a good lead into the next innings.
The clean hitting and aggressive base running continued, some good infielding by Cam and Thomas with some excellent work by Nik S at first and Nick E in centrefield. A dominant performance with both bat and ball highlighted by an "in the park" home run by Thomas (2 from 4), 4 hits from 4 to Jack and Harrison, 3 from 4 by Sam, 2 also for Nik, and Cam.
Although we relaxed a little over the last innings the team produced an excellent overall effort of the standard required in the coming weeks. Well done boys.

A game of shut downs and walk-em homes ! They had two very good pitchers who closed us down for 2 innings and we had two very good pitchers (Reid and Austin) who closed them down for nothing in two innings. We had two innings of walks to score 5 runs an innings and we returned the favour. Game Over - Tied and Drawn !
Reid and Austin both pitched well to keep them scoreless and Reid had a nice single hit and came home with a run in the 4th. Apart from Isaak hitting a nice ball to the outfield for a double and a solid single for Elliot R, not too many others got bat on ball. The fielding was pretty solid and it was great to see Harry out supporting his team mates in his comeback from injury.

Commiserations to the Adelaide Bite going down 2-1 in the ABL Grand Final played in Perth. However I believe Baseball in Australia was the winner with outstanding coverage on Fox Sports and also through the print media. Congratulations to our three Sturt players, Tom Becker, Tom Brice and Paul Mildren who did us proud!

Our sponsors event will commence at 3.00 pm to coincide with Game 2 of the now scheduled double header! For any of those sponsors yet to RSVP please email me as soon as possible so we can finalise numbers!

On the following Sunday 27th February there will be a special event recognising the 20 year anniversary of our last A Grade Premiership. The majority of the players from the Premiership team will be at the club and will be presented to the crowd before the main game. The date has been chosen to coincide with Sturt playing Glenelg who were our opponents 20 years ago. We are also having a lamb on the spit for dinner that night for $10 a plate which will include a selection of salads, so please mark the date down in your diary and stick around for the dinner!

I would also like to direct you to this week's Featured Player of the Week, Stewart Gardiner from the from the Sturt U14-2's "Sluggers" side. Goodwood 1 defeated Sturt 0
Another close encounter with the old foe losing to Goodwood 1-0 in 9 digs. If we were to play this standard of baseball all year there would be no doubt that we would be playing finals this year. Harrison Wood hit the ball hard all day with no reward as did Sam Hollis. It wasn't a very offensive day by either team as each team only gathered 5 hits each. Our hits came from Brian McGuiness 1, David Hirst 1 and Pat Burns 1. Considering the youth in our team and the experience on the opposition side, the boys should hold their heads up high , very proud of the effort , lets finish the season off with the same intensity.

Division 4 (Coach: Kris McArdle)

Sturt 9 defeated Southern Districts 8
We headed down south for what was always going to be an even tussle as both side had only 3 wins under their belt. We jumped out of the box scoring two run in the first. Southern District got the 2 runs back thanks to me dropping a sitter in the outfield. We fought back hard and scored 4 in the second and held SD to 0 in their reply. Things were looking easy as we then put on another two runs in the 3rd and where up 8-2 at the start of the bottom 3. SD put on 2 runs to make it 8-5 and it was time to bring on the guys from the bench. I had the hard job to make the changes and thought who's going to come off. So i pulled Chris for not hitting his cut-off ( sorry mate but i was trying to find reasons to pull someone ) and the i pulled myself for going off at Chris for not hitting the cut-off and for dropping my third catch in as many weeks. Kingsley then offered his spot to give someone a go cheers. Changes where made and unfortunately our scoring dried up and we couldn't find a run in the 4th 5th and 6th but SD did find some runs and the scores where even at the top 7. We needed a run desperately and you could tell the boys where focus to do their best. Justin Ranford come up with a ripping shot to left field for a single things where looking good. The next few hitter where struggling a little so in true div 4 style i raised my eyes to Justin from 1st base coaching box and then lifted the hat peak to second, luckily Justin knew what i meant and didn't think i was making a pass on him and stole second successfully. Now we had a runner in scoring position. Justin was on his toes and took third on a pass ball. 2 out and our next hitter swings and misses on strike three but the catcher missed the ball and Justin scored to put us up by the one run. We couldn't manage to manufacture anymore runs and had to get three out to win. Matt Mulryan pitched the complete game and went into the last dig more focus than i have seen from him ever and he came up with the win getting the last three out three up three down. DIV 4 WINS , great game boys when we bat aggressive we are hard to beat. Matt's effort on the mound over the last few weeks has really helped us become more competitive well done mate keep working on it. Good to see Jake Wayne back playing after breaking his cheek bone, he picked up a late hit and took a great catch in Left field; keep working Jake you have a lot of ball in front of you. Player of the day Justin Ranford the new bat is working well !!

Sturt 7 defeated Gawler 5
We travelled the long trip out to Gawler with the kids in the back asking if we were there yet and the Doc (Glen Young) following us with the other half of the team, finally arriving after leaving at the break of dawn. We had eight when we arrived and my fingers were crossed that the other two who said they would play would turn up. With about 45 minutes to game time we were all there and ready to play. We started of with 1 run in our first at bat but we gave Gawler one straight back. The Rat (Rick Trembath) was on the mound and looking good. In the second we had 4 up for our 3 outs and back into the field we went, we had Gawler 4 up for the three outs as well and this was becoming a pitchers dual. In the third with 2 out we managed to get 3 walks and load the bases with the Rat up to bat, a nice hit to centerfield and we had scored 2 more runs to go 3 - 1 up unfortunately we gave them 2 straight back to tie it up again going into the top of the 4th. In the 4th we managed to get our nose in front by 1 after Bones (Glen McDonald) scored and we had Gawler 3 up and down with 6 pitches from the Rat. We managed to get 2 up from our bat in the 5th only to let Gawler tie it again in the bottom of the innings to go into the last at 5 all. With two out and runners on first and third up comes the Spider (Neil Stewart) who takes aim and hits between centre and right field for a stand up double and score the runners from first and third, so into the bottom of the 6th we go needing 3 outs to win. First out is a pop up fly for the catcher Doc and to our amazement he keeps his glove on and mask off to take the catch, there is a story behind the glove and mask so ask Doc (Glen Young) when you next see him. Second out was a fly to right field and Pop (Mark Burns) after moving in two steps, out two steps to the left and then back to the right takes the catch, a lovely catch with the wind moving the ball everywhere. Third out was to Fame (Adrian Hill) at short for a regulation out, time and game called 7 to 5 up and our final hopes still alive only just. I must also mention Rat pitched the whole game for the win and Fame gets the prize for the second time this year with his tumble, roll and dip for his slide going into home plate, he was safe not that we could tell with all the dirt flying around. Glad to get the win as it was a nice drive home. Thanks to our one supporter Jenny Small who made the trip out with us and to Pat who comes every week and scores.
Safe Hits: Glen Young (Doc) 1, Neil Stewart (Spider) 1, Adrian Hill (Fame) 1, Rick Trembath (Rat) 1, Ron Taylor (Rocket) 1

We travelled to East Torrens today and the guys delivered everything I hoped they would, and got from the game what we needed!
Everyone in the team picked up at least one hit, all nineteen runs were earned, and zero errors were made on our part!
Sam Roberts pitched the four innings for us, with five strikeouts and 31 strikes from 46 pitches. Great effort after a few weeks off from pitching!
Keep up the good work, and keep this momentum going into March!

The game started slowly with Max pitching and having trouble finding the strike zone they scored 3 in the first we scored 4 batting through the line-up, even 2nd with 2 each, then a 9 run inning with all the boys getting solid hits and testing the field forcing errors. Errol came on to close and with some excellent field work from Ryan and Sam held them scoreless in the last. Great game boys against some pretty good pitching thanks to Max G, Max Walker and Charlie Goldsworthy parents and coaches for your help.

Sturt 20 defeated Woodville 0
We are now getting very close to the serious end of the season and i asked the team to step up a notch and play hard energetic baseball. Well the score board proved that's what we did, scoring 20 runs off 17 hits also shows we did it with solid hitting all day. Defensively we also played very well to keep woodville scoreless. Mitchell continues his form picking up 2 hits as our lead off and pitched the first 3 digs giving up only 2 hits and 4 strikeouts. Mitch was backed up with some great fielding from Woody at right field, Stuart Brennan at second and Sam Cav at short who all made some great plays to help out Mitch. Brodie finished the last two digs and pitched very well , his first dig was a three up three down with 2 strike outs. His last and our final dig he also picked up 2 strikeouts and Matt Amberg made the final out with a great deep catch in Left field. We also has a triple play that was so confusing to the umpire that we compromised and decided between us all that 2 outs would be ok, but as Mitchell will tell you we did complete a triple play. Goes a bit like this, runners on second and first none out, the ball is smoke to Brodie who catches the ball but then drops it as he hits the ground after his dive for the ball, Runner on second runs but thinks he need to tag up and returns to second, Brodie throws the ball to Mitch at second and he then runs down and touches third for the first out. At this stage everyone is confused accept Mitch he then runs back to second and takes the second out as the runner on first thinks Brodie caught the ball and stays at first. The third out was because the batter also thought the ball was caught and doesn't run and returns to the bench 3rd out. I think the only people on the ground with any idea on what was going on was Brodie and Mitch well done boys ( and the coaches of course ). Lesson learnt here is the umpire did call no catch so make sure we always play to the umpires call not the crowd. Offensively we just hit the ball hard and flat and ran the bases really well, plus no signals missed well done boys. Woody was the pick of the day going 3 from 4 great job Henry keep working hard mate you are coming along well. Every player registered a hit today a pleasure to watch. But that game is now a long distant memory and we need to re-focus on this weeks game 1st Vs 2nd at West Torrens. keep a lid on it guys still some way to go , let train hard and work toward our goal and remember intensity at training will spread into games.

U14/2 - Sturt 19 defeated Hawks 12
Once again we headed south… after dodging a curve thrown by SABL* who deemed it necessary to change the start time from 12.30pm to 10am without warning us..OR Southern Districts - who didn't need/want/request a change - once again we shake our heads! (*Their Junior Co-ordinator Shorty had no idea until Thursday night.. and thanks Neil Cross who spotted the change Friday night!)
The boys started the bats with absolute enthusiasm crunching 6 hits to jump out to a 6 zip start.. and then RJ took the mound and was unlucky to have 2 runs scored against him after solid pitching .. (runs scored on wild throws/past balls …. on a full sized field with no cones is a tough ask for U14's). 2nd innings and out came the bats again - another 5 hits generated another 4 runs … and then RJ came out and stopped them cold with 2 strike outs and a 4-3 put out. It's an easy game!
Top 3rd and this time they got 8 on base in a row - mostly with solid sharp flat hits… it was an exhibition!
With the score now at 17- it was time to ease back… and we did! The pitching change coupled with some errant infield allowed runs in far too easily.. and although we had stopped stealing, it was a little disappointing to see things come undone quite as much as they did! But to their credit, they took the game in the 1st 2 innings and really had no chance of losing it… a solid performance by all with a terrific batting effort - best of the season - and ideal timing at this point! Pitching from RJ was good, Tommy and Stewie tried but struggled… and the new discovery Awesome Angus closed very well!

Under U14/2 Saints - (Coach: John McClure)

U14/2 Saints 11 lost to Adelaide 15
Baseball, they say, is a microcosm of life and like life comes with its highs and lows. After snatching victory from the jaws of defeat last week we did the reverse and lost another heartbreaker to Adelaide.
The day began as a beautiful sunny morning at Flinders, the ground green, firm and the boys were mindful of the 3P's mantra and looking good. After 2 innings we had our best start of the season and led 9-3. Aggressive base running, good pitching and fielding gave us a nice lead approaching the halfway mark. By the end of a 2 hour 20 minute arm wrestle we found ourselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard going down 15-11 in a quality and entertaining game.
Firstly there are plenty of positives to take away. The pitching all season has been very good. At this level if you get over 55% plus strikes you really can't ask for much more. Today Conor, Arno and "the closer" Ethan hurled some good balls to give us a really good chance. The fielding continues to improve. Errors are down to single figures and the thought processes that go in are improving as well. At times we have been too timid and not aggressive enough at the ball and today when millimetres counted we made a few critical "blues". A few tweaks here and there are all that is required.
Our batting has been our Achilles heel all season and continues to tantalise. The stealing of bases was much improved and pleasing to watch. Jack, Max, Ryack and Matt all got safe hits, but there were too many going down looking. Have a swing! We were offered 12 walks as opposed to our pitchers giving away just the 4. Adelaide got 12 hits to our 4 and that proved to be the difference yet again.
Max Staggs continued his superb season. A lovely two base hit deep to left field, stole 3 bases, scored 3 times and did quite an outstanding job as catcher in the second half. The two high quality pick offs with Ethan at 2nd showcased his versatile talents. Ethan showed guts in the field and was involved in a lot of good plays, Conor opened the pitching well, Arno tried hard and all up it was a good team game with everyone involved at some stage. Just a pity we lost.
Thank you to Brett for another unbiased and fearless display of umpiring in what turned into a marathon, Jo Paddick (scorer) the BP of the Management Team, Craig, Deb and all the other parents who pitched in and helped. The boys do appreciate it. Two to go; let's keep up the good work.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young & Jamie Knuckey)

What a game of baseball - and only at Little League 1 level. The match for the Sturt LL major had everything, good pitching, excellent batting, great fielding and a see-sawing score line resulting in a 12-12 draw. The boys got away to a great start with 5 boys in a row getting bat on ball (Sam, Cam, Tom, Nik and Simon) to bring up three earned runs. Consistent hitting is what we will need to play well in finals. Nick E had his second visit to the pitching mound for the year and did extremely well. Three innings, 38 strikes and only 22 balls, 7 K's and only three runs given up - what a great effort for a part time pitcher. Our batting continued to be solid in the middle of our line up and our LL minor relief player Tyrese got us a hit and RBI in his first LL major game - well done Tyrese and thanks for helping out. Glenelg were not going to give it up and good fielding and hitting by our opposition saw us only one run up at the bottom of the fourth. Simon gave us a solid pitching performance and although the radar wasn't entirely tuned a great catch by Nick E in the outfield and a throw to second to complete the double play saw only one run given up. It wasn't all smooth sailing however as Glenelg game back at us strongly in the fifth innings to get the maximum five runs and take the lead by three. This was despite very tight pitching by Nik S (75% strikes) - some days they just take to you and hit the gaps. As usual Nik just got on the the job without fuss and showed great maturity. Our last at bat we got the maximum five runs with more great batting - Thomas and Simon both having three hits for the day. Simon and Sam also showed us how to run the bases aggressively and put the pressure on the field. With a two run buffer we had to hold them and the boys put in a stirling effort. Thomas pitched with unbelievable accuracy (85% strikes) but two great hits to the gaps in the outfield saw a 12-12 draw. Its always a bit of a let down a draw but it was a great game of baseball.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Rick Mitchell & Stuart Crutchley)

Little League 2-Sturt 8 lost to Adelaide 9
The boys put up a great effort only losing in the bottom of the last against a much improved Adelaide outfit. The boys all through the lineup hit the ball well when given the opportunity.Walks by our pitchers determined the game in the end.Oliver Crutchley was our most outstanding player this week smashing himself a couple of hits, and it was good to see Bailey Gilbert get up and use hit his strength in the box hitting the ball hard and he also pitched a very good dig.

Saints LL Div 2 - 9 defeated Glenelg 6
Well it didn't take long to blow off the cobwebs - the boys put it together when it counted to manufacture a terrific victory under the flight path at Glenelg. However, it must have been the Av-gas the boys breathed in as the 9.30 - 10.30am rush hour touch downs sent our boys to sleep for the first innings. Sloppy fielding and sloppy batting saw nothing much happen for either team in the first dig. They were throwing wild and furious and we were swinging like rusty gates. Reed was a bit wild and woolly at times but he had the right pitch at the right time to stop them inflicting any damage. Some good fielding by Jordan also kept them at bay for the last out of the innings.
The second innings saw the real game unfold as Aussie, Read, Eli and Elliot all got bat on ball and we managed to score 4 runs. Both Aussie and Eli hit doubles and with a couple of walks from their pitcher, meant we had a few base runners to bring home the goods. Not to be outdone, Glenelg hit back with 5 runs, 3 of them scored on their last hit which was a monster to centre field and out of range of our fielder. Eli managed to tag the hitter at home plate as he was trying to be a little too optimistic - all to no avail really as they had already got their fifth over the line with the previous runner.
Now for the third innings and we got another 5 runs on the board. Jordan took a nasty pitch into the middle of his back and to his credit he gutsed it out to eventually make it to home plate - great courage young man - we hope the bruising is not too ugly on Monday morning. No-one actually got bat on ball in this innings - their pitcher could not find the strike zone and we basically walked enough batters round the diamond and chalked up a lazy match-winning 5 runs !! Elliot R then rammed home the advantage and made quick work of their innings with only one of them getting bat on ball for a single. The other 3 were all struck out in quick succession. Great pitching Elliot.
A fourth innings to forget with their minds absent from their bodies and we were routed without troubling the scorer (thanks to Lynne for doing the honours again). Despite being wayward at times, Eli had enough pace on the ball to send them packing with only 1 run scored in their final innings. At times their batters were dumb struck by the sizzling pitches being thrown by Eli. The boys celebrated their first victory of 2011.

Sturt 5 lost to Souths 6
Heart breaking loss again - loss number 6 by one run this season.
This was by far the most gutwrenching of the season. To watch this team travel to Souths to play a full strength opposition, play there hearts out for 8 and 1/3 innings only to trip at the final hurdle was difficult to watch. These players all deserved some reward for their effort and unfortunately got none. I guess that is sport and fortunately it teaches you how to deal with it and make sure it doesnt happen again. We will be better mentally and physically through similar situations next time.
Lewis Townsend continues to have an outstanding season. He threw 6 innings not giving up an earned run against an experienced hitting lineup. Well done mate. Dave Carter was simply in the best form since he has returned to Division 1 baseball both defensively and offensively. Travis Fox was fantastic, Ali Young played a cracking game at third and Daniel Lee came up big when we needed it. But in the end it wasn't enough.
We now have a week off before a crucial few games at home which will decide our fate this season. We can and will win all four so make sure you get out to support the team in their journey to play in the finals this season.

Sturt defeated Southern Districts 11-5
In a defensively ordinary game, we manage to get the better of South's late to record a comfortable win. For the second week running Tom Teague and Craig Wright were sensational on the hill, giving up only one earned run through six innings. Offensively we were very good, with Will Frogley, Daniel Turner and Harrison Wood picking up crucial hits at crucial times in the game. We have three games left in the season and we require three wins to make finals, a pretty simple scenario for us and the boys are up for the challenge.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)Sponsored by:Hattam McCarthy Reeves Mastertax

Glenelg 13 defeated Sturt 8
After the coach giving up 8 in the 1st 2 digs all the boys fought hard and after the 4th we were only down by 1 run thanx to some fantastic pitching by Harrison Wood. Earned runs we won 7-5 but in the real world the final score was 13-8 down. Harrison had a day with the bat as well going 2-3 with a HBP, great game Hazz. Brian McGuinness had a good day in the lead off position going 1-2 with 2 walks . Michael Robinson had sensational day going 3-3 in the box and was flawless at short stop. Nick Tuffnell continued another great season getting himself 2 hits. Pat Burns has been hitting the ball hard over the last couple of weeks and was finally rewarded with a line drive double to the fence. With 3 games to go and 2 games out of the 4 we need a miracle, but we are playing 3 teams in the top 4 ,so it is up to us. This was Ryan Mattschoss' last game for the club and has been a great servant to both Div2 and Div3 since being at the club, he shows everyone how the game should be played 100% .Sad to see you go but good luck with everything , thanks on behalf of Div3.

Sturt 13 lost to Glenelg 18
An important game for us to win and keep our finals hopes alive and unfortunately this was one of those games that slipped through our fingers. We ended up losing in the last innings after giving up early runs and fighting our way back to the front. Our first at bat was looking good as we plated 3 runs before side away and into the field we go. We started with the Wulff (Don Wulff) on the mound to see if he could hold Glenelg but we had to many errors which allowed them to plate 4 runs with 3 of them unearned. In the second we had three out with out scoring and Glenelg had a feast with 7 runs again with 3 of them being unearned. The 6 unearned runs was the difference in the end that hurt us with the final score. In the 3rd we did get two back to be 11 - 5 down and still in the game. We went to the Rat (Rick Trembath) to throw a few and see if we could get out with out giving up any runs for Glenelg's at bat and we did. The fourth saw us score 5 to be 11 - 10 down and right back in the game. The Rat (Rick) again held them scoreless and we needed to make some runs to make them bat again. We made 3 runs with our last at bat and only needed 3 outs to take the win. Unfortunately for us they had some good hits that found the holes and they ended up with 7 runs to finish the game and take the win.
Our fielding early in the game was not up to our best and this in the end cost us the game.
Thanks to the three blokes that came out and did not get a run for the day.
Our batting was great with the big three crushing the ball, Wulffy for two consecutive home runs, Bear (Barry Lunnon) with a home run and Spider (Neil Stewart) with 2 doubles.
Safe Hits: Wulff 3 (2HR), Lunnon 3 (1HR), Sluga 2, Stewart 2 (2D) Hill 2, Small 1, McDonald 1, Young 1

Sturt 7 def Glenelg 6
This game was always set to be a challenging one for us against the top placed Glenelg.
It was tight from the get go, with both sides held scoreless for the first couple of digs. Shaun Wright started on the hill for us pitching three solid digs and getting out of trouble with loaded bases, Excellent effort! Matt Franke closed the last dig doing enough to help us win.
We kept them in the game with a few costly errors, and could have shut the door alot earlier in the piece, but was still pleasing however that our desire to win was greater than theirs!
There were a few highlights including a well executed bunt from Harrison Lightbody to score Sam Duffield. Also Sam Roberts hit well all day bringing in a few runs, and Max Guehrer found some good form with the bat picking up a couple of hits!
A good team performance, with everyone making a contribution, the chatter on the bench is getting closer to where it needs to be, but lots of room for improvement! Well Done Guys!
HITS: Sam Roberts 3; Max Guehrer 2; Matt Franke, Sam Duffield 1.

The boys played well again, taking every opportunity to apply pressure to the field forcing errors and scoring from them. We batted well with everybody getting hits: Ryan 1/ Lewis with 3( only one with the bat ) Henry B 1 / Errol 2 / Henry S 2 Reuben Bishop 2 from 2/ Will Hill unlucky caught at centre/ Sam 1/ Alex 1/ Rupert 1.

Sturt 7 def Adelaide 5
Today we didn't really get going with the bat. Only 6 hits for the day and 4 went to Charlie alone. Plenty of the lads hit the ball hard but couldn't find the gap plus lots of walks made it a slow game. Our fielding was still very solid Sam Cav again showing how reliable his glove is at short stop. Zach Lunnon started on the mound and struggles at time with his accuracy but knuckled down and only gave up 2 runs in his two digs. Charlie finished off pitching also struggling with his accuracy but fought hard to get through his 3 digs; well done boys. We need to work hard on our ball pens and get the strike rate up. Some highlights for the day was Charlies 4 hits, Jordan throw out another runner stealing second (cold) and picked up a hit before his bench time and then Mitchell replaced him as catcher and also gunned down a runner stealing second, plus picked up a hit for his half game. Well done Mitch you did what i ask all bench players to do and that is come off the bench and make an impact. Boys today we got the job done ( just ) but we need more intensity during the game , always play our game hard and don't coast to the end otherwise the good sides will make us pay for it. Get ready boys we now have two hard games ahead of us and then the business time.

U14/2 Saints 12 d Southern Districts 6
Possibly the best return from the dead since Lazarus went to the Jerusalem Big Day Out. The mighty Saints came from 6-2 down with two innings to bat to win 12-6 in front of a roaring capacity crowd at Norman Reserve Stadium. A warm, windy Sunday afternoon saw the Saints dig deep and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and set themselves up for a barnstorming finish to the season.
The much anticipated and discussed clash began on a very bright day at 12:30PM. The first innings saw a deadlock with quality pitching and fielding seeing a nil all deadlock. Highlight was Max's double play on the mound to retire South's after just 6 balls. However, we went down in just 16 balls due to quality pitching and catching from our opposition.
The second innings saw South's score 4 runs with good hard hitting. We managed to reply with a timely 2 bagger to Conor and single to Matt giving us 2 runs to trail 4-2. Max continued the accurate pitching giving up just the one run in his third and final dig to see us at 5-2. The batting continued to struggle and at the bottom of fifth and penultimate innings we were down 6-2 and looking down the barrel of defeat.
To the lads credit they responded beautifully, with hits to Ty, Brandon, JJ and a walk or two saw the team score the max of 7 and shake off the batting shackles and grab the game by the scruff of the neck. With Conor pitching a no runs final innings the bats responded once again with Matt and Ty getting safe hits to bring the game to a splendid conclusion.
If there is anything better than a come from behind win please let me know. South's put up a good game and only just fell away. What's really pleasing is seeing the boys finally get bat on ball and scoring some much deserved runs. The body language and mood was positive and at no stage did the boys drop their heads. It was an all round effort with contributions from all and that's how you win. The trick will be to continue for our next three games.
Fielding highlights included handstand expert Ty's big catch in right field in swirling wind, Brandon's "hail mary special" catch at 2nd, and Matt's excellent display at first. Ryack was solid as always behind the plate and never stopped the yap. A well deserved win from a potentially disastrous position.
A good day was had by all. Thanks to Brett Eggleston for another excellent umpiring display, Jo Paddick for scoring, Craig, Deb, Richard and all the parents who continue to support the team.
Hits: Matt 2, Ty 2, Conor, Brandon, JJ.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young & Jamie Knuckey)

Our last encounter with Southern Districts was at their home and not one of our better performances for season. Their pitching had completely dominated the game and we had scarcely a hit for the day. This time we were able to host the game at Sturt with the diamond looking wonderful. With Nik Sas starting on the mound we were able to see how far he has come this season with his pitching. His d action is now really coming together and he got us off to a good start with the only run scored was by some aggressive base running and probably the only good hit for the day. Our first at bat had the coaches thinking we might be in for a replay of the last game - three up and three down without worrying the field.
Nik again held the Hawks scoreless for our second defensive innings. Cam lead off for the second at bat and a nice hit to right field for a double was the impetus we needed. From there the batting did not look back. Helped a little by some errors in the field the boys managed to accumulate 13 runs over the next four innings with hits by Cam (2), Jack (1), Thomas (1) and Jamie L (1) along with a number of base on balls. Nick pitched his three innings with 75% strikes and only giving up 2 hits and one run. Thomas gave another accomplished performance on the mound to finish the last two innings and maintaining his good pitching stats for this year. One could only say it was a pleasure to see all the boys contributing to a good win and playing with great attitude and confidence. It is this approach that we will need to knock off West Torrens - hopefully in the grand final.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Rick Mitchell & Stuart Crutchley)

The boys played a great game on the weekend beating Glenelg 10-5 . The most pleasing thing was the way the boys came out swinging the bat. Elijah Randell smashed a stand up double , Bryce Terry hit the ball hard , Oliver Crutchley had another good day in the box and was outstanding behind the dish again , sorry if i missed any hits i know that i have but we didnt have a scorer so our score book was blank. On the hill Dayton Mitchell again did a great job keeping the opposition scoreless , Hugo Dahlen-Flight and Tyrese Kimotho both pitched very well . Bailey Gilbert came into pitch the last dig for his 1st pitch ever and did a fantastic job keeping the Bays scoreless. Great job boys all of you have improved so much since the start of the year and that is what this team is all about .

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Mitchell Knuckey) Sponsored by: Premier Trailers  Watts Agencies

Saints 7 lost to Goodwood 11
After a long summer lay-off, a bye and a hot-weather cancellation, the Little Saints finally got back out on the park for the first time in 2011. There were some sparkling glimmers of brilliance but it generally appeared that most of them were still at the beach - at times this included the coach and manager ! I think it will take us all a little longer to get our minds switched back on to disciplined baseball and for the boys to get their bodies back into shape for throwing and hitting properly.
Anyway, a good first-up triple for Reed gave us some hope early. Unfortunately, his good hit was followed in pretty quick succession by 3 stike outs as our boys struggled with the pace of their lead pitcher. We came away with nothing in the first despite Reed's efforts. Despite a few walks, we kept Goodwood to 3 runs in their first dig. Things seemed to fall our way more easily when they had the bases loaded. There was a ray of sunshine in the 2 innings as we scored the maximum 5 runs home and could have gone on with it for a while longer if allowed in this innings. Ozzie hit a long ball to the outfield and was able to run the bases home and bring 3 others home with him - it was a great hit and the boys were jumping for joy and celebrating the highlight of their day.
With only a single run scored in the 3rd and 4th innings and Goodwood scoring 5 and 3 in the 2nd and 3rd innings, it was all over by the end of our 4th time at bat.
Seaton hit a great triple and did a good job as catcher, while Isaak had a solid game throughout, scoring in the 3rd and Robbie fielded well and scored a run in the 2nd innings.
Hopefully the cobwebs have now been blown off and we can get back into some winning form for next week.

Sturt 5 defeated Goodwood 0
In a must win game for the Saints, the boys played a great game against a formidable opponent. Paul Mildren threw all 7 innings in the shutout and showed true class from beginning to end. Bricey Almighty supplied the spark with the bat, with 2 doubles, 2 walks and 2 RBIs. Dan Lee also came up big with a 2 run shot to the fence in the 6th inning. Defensively we continue to set a very very high standard with some great plays and yet another clean sheet for errors.
Success builds momentum, momentum builds confidence, confidence can make this lineup very difficult to beat in the run into the finals.

Sturt 15 defeated Playford City 2
At least this time it was Playford Cities turn to do the driving as they packed their bags and travelled to Sturt.
It was a warm day and we were looking for our fourth win since Christmas. Things were a little nervous as the clock ticked slowly to game time and we only had eight but luckily for us Bones (Glen McDonald) turned up 35 minutes before the game after getting lost, still happens after so many years coming to the same place, and then Wulffy (Don Wulff) turned up with 25 minute to go, after purchasing his retirement golf sticks, and all was good. We started with Rocket (Ron Taylor) on the mound and with the shortened game time and innings he threw 2 & 2/3's before we replaced him with the Rat (Rick Trembath) for the rest of the game. Both did the job thus we kept Playford to only 2 runs. Our bats were not at there best for the day but we still plated enough runs to take the win. On a lighter note it was a great position move by the coach to bring the Wulff into short stop and send Fame (Adrian Hill) to centre field, in the last at bat for Playford City they ended up with a runner at second before Fame snuck in from centre field to get the pick off from the Rat for the 2nd out and snuff out any chance of them scoring their third. On the next play Fame had us all laughing as a fly ball hit by one of Playford Cities female players to him saw him run in for the catch before what he says was a hole, which we could not find after an hour looking in the heat of the day, to drop to his knees and with a final attempt to catch the ball only to just drop it. I am positive that I saw the Rat out of the corner of my eye have a little spit at this dropped catch as he now had to pitch to one more batter for the final out and game was called. 1/2 hour after the game and Fame was still talking about the hole at centre field so if you are walking around that area and you happen to fall in the same hole please take a photo and send it to Fame as proof. This week we are at Glenelg, who are second on the table, looking for our fifth straight win and keep our finals chance alive, be ready boys and bring your game face. As I left the score book at the club I am unable to give you batting stats for the team but just to let you all know I (Coach Small) had 2 safe hits with a double and a sac fly.

Thanks to all of our supporters who came out to watch the 15 inning Division 1 epic on Sunday at the club. Our A Grade coach Tony Catt described the end result as "heartbreaking", but I am sure everyone who was there till the bitter end can attest to the fact that it was a great baseball game with our pitchers holding Kensington to just one run in 14 innings! Well done boys! Our intrepid photographer Jeff Nicholas or Snorky to his friends was once again capturing all of the action. Go to the front page of our website to view all of the action!

I would also like to direct you to this week's Featured Player of the Week, Simon Adkins from the from the Little League 1-Sturt side.

On a sad note our Club Patron Dave Hutton rang me a couple of hours ago to inform me that recently inducted Life Member and Hall of Fame inductee Noel Gully passed away earlier this evening. On behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club I would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Shirley and family. I will update you later in the week when funeral arrangements are known.

Sturt 1 lost to Kensington 4 (in 15 innings)
Heartbreaking. This is what it felt like after 15 innings and over 4 hours of slugging it out with a very good Kensington outfit.
For the boys to get no reward after an effort like that is disappointing but character building and there are a lot of positives to take from the game. The pitching staff deserve special mention with there effort to hold Kensington to 1 run through 14 innings in a hitter friendly ball park. Lewis Townsend, Ben Packer, Paul Mildren, Dan Lee and for a short stint Dan Turner all had to dig deep at various times and showed real steel and determination.
Only picking up 8 hits offensively was disappointing, but Ali Young and Dave Carter certainly shone in this area. Ali Young also showed some great desperation and toughness behind the dish in the long day.
Tough day at the office. But we need to dust ourselves off for the next challenge. We only have to wait 7 days til we can jump out there again against Goodwood to get rid of the horrible taste this game left in all our mouths.
A particular thankyou must go to the umpires, spectators and scorers for enduring the marathon day.
Hits - Young 3, Carter 2, Lee, Fox, Turner.

Sturt 21 defeated Henley and Grange 0
We had something to prove this week having come away with a draw in our last meeting , and we did a fantastic job beating Henley & Grange 21-0. Tom Teague started on the hill and dominated the opposition throwing the ball hard and having great control throwing only 50 pitches for 4 digs and 8 ksand 0 walks, in the box Tom went 1-3 with a double and a walk. Sam Hollis was back to his old form with 3-3 and 2 walks and all his at bats were quality as were his hits. Dave Hirst was VERY patient in the box 1-1 with a double and 3 walks , Micheal Robinson chimed in again with his weekly hit. Nick Tuffnell was at his best smoking a HOMERUN and a linedrive to the fence with a double. Dakota back in the lineup got himself a hit and 2 walks. The most pleasing thing about this game was our hustle on and off the ground and our intensity even when the game was well and truely over . Great job guys!

President's Note: Rick was too modest to mention in his report that he hit a GRAND SLAM! Well done Rick!!

Sturt 8 def Golden Grove 7
Today we notched up our 3rd win of the season and gees it felt good. Firstly thanks to Stan for umpiring with about 3 hours notice and then putting up with a gobby GG catcher cheers mate. Today we pulled the garden gnome out and stuck him on third, Knuckey really is a great guy to have on the team, his talk lifts the side. We lifted today and I truly believe Nux had a lot to do with it. He also finished with a few hits and RBIs . Unfortunately we didn't get to see his fielding prowess as no plays made third. We bounced out with 4 run in the first with bat contact forcing errors and producing line drives as well. We continued with 1 run in the second and 3 in the 4th to score our 8 runs. Matt Mulryan pitched a great game only giving up 1 run. Frenchy and Pete T both hit well all day and Sam F was the ball magnet making some awesome plays at 2nd. Half way through the game we got the 4 guys on the bench into the game they held their own but GG fought back it was fairly tense in the last defensive dig ; 1 run up with one out and runners on 1st and 3rd. This is where the magic came out ; Sam fields the ball at 2nd fires it to Matt who completes the double play to win. Celebrations for the div 4 guys with what was a great win and a very enjoyable day. The old saying " winners are grinners ".

SPIDER WEAVES MAGIC WEB WHILE WULFF AND BEAR MAUL TIGERS BY 1 (Sturt 13 d Tigers 12)

What a headline grabbing performance! Sturt looking for their third win in a row, after Christmas, went to Glenelg to play one of the top teams (Tigers) and hopefully keep their finals prospect alive.
Step in Don Wulff (Wulffy), Barry Lunnon (Bear) and Neil Stewart (Spider) some of the old greats from the early days, and they played like they were young again (although unable to move more than likely on Sunday). The tempo was set in the first innings with Spider (lead off batter) with a safe hit. This was followed up with a single from Wulffy and a double to the Bear and Sturt had two runs on the board.
Wulffy was called to the mound for a follow up pitching performance from the previous week and what a performance he put on. Wulffy shut them down in the first and the Sturt boys were on a high.
Sturt started the second innings off with more hits and another two runs. However, the Tigers bounced back with 6 runs through a couple of 'p!ss ant' hits and a couple of errors.
To Sturt's credit we kept plugging away for the rest of the game, with strong team hitting (Bear, Spider and Wulffy crushed the ball) and consistent pitching from Wulffy, Sturt captured back the lead and after six innings the score was 12 - 8 up and only a couple of minutes left in the game. The umpire called game but Tigers sitting second on the table did not want the loss so they had a quick chat with the ump and we went to the seventh innings. We made 1 run in our at bat to be 13-8 up with the Tigers to bat. Wulffy went to the mound again and all we needed was 3 outs to win, the Tigers weren't going to go down easy and put on another 4 runs before it was - Game Over, Sturt 13 defeat the Tigers 12.
It's been a loooooong time since the team has put in such a great performance and shown character to grab a come from behind win. Next week Sturt have bottom side Playford City which should see Sturt take another win and some needed percentage.
Safe Hits 15 in total: Barry Lunnon (Bear) 4 (3D); Neil Stewart (Spider) 3 (2D); Don Wulff (Wulffy) 3 (1D); Norm Sluga (Wild Thing) 2 (1D); Ben Colyer (Shrek) 1; Mark Burns (Pop) 1 and Adrian Hill (Fame) 1.

STURT 7 def WEST TORRENS 5
We travelled down to West Torrens today, with a job ahead as it was important to get the second half of the season off to a good start.
It turned out to be a bit of a hard slog, with Matt Franke pitching well throwing 48 strikes from 78 pitches. They took their five runs off him although four of them were unearned. He did well to stick to his task at hand! Then Shaun Wright finished off. He continues to develop and improve, throwing two digs 23 pitches 14 strikes, and three strikeouts in the last. A great way to finish off and put the game out of doubt!
The highlight in the field was a well executed run down play that resulted in two outs with all involved doing the right things when needed. Harrison Lightbody did well behind the dish all day in hot conditions.
The boys did well despite errors seeing it was the first game back, but will be expecting improvement and the guys to switch on over the coming weeks as we draw closer to the pointy end off the season!
HITS: Matt Franke, Jesse Kemp, Shaun Wright 2; Sam Roberts, Sam Duffield, Max Guehrer, Harrison Lightbody 1.

Sturt 10 def Golden Grove 1
We had a good week at training with a hot infield on Wednesday and hit the ball well Friday. Golden Grove is always a tough opponent and we wanted to get off to a good start early in this game and also for the last half of the year. Unfortunately that didn't happen our first three hitters K2'd, then GG started with a safe hit, but no need to panic as we then kicked into gear. Jordan caught that batter stealing to second and Mitch then cleaned up with two fly balls at short, no damage and the game stood at 0-0 after the first. Then big Max came up to hit and blasted a great line drive over centre fields head and then ran the bases hard for an inside homerun. After a walk from Jordan and Zach L and then a big double from Matt A and a single from Sam C we put on 3 runs for the second dig. Charlie G continued on the mound giving up a hit to the first batter and then he kicked into gear throwing out two hitters by strikeout and Mitch cleaned up with a 6-3.
From this point on we ran away with the game with solid hitting from all special mention to Max W with 3 from 4 for the day, Sam Cav 2 from 4 also batting very well. Most boys collected a hit for the day. Defensively we were solid in the field well done to Jordan Mc from behind the dish catching the first batter of the day stealing , plus a beautiful block and throw out at third. Sam Cav was very solid at third making the tag from the catchers throw plus two very solid plays during the game. Pitchers today also throw more strikes than balls and in 7 digs we only throw 3 walks. Charlie was strong for 4 digs only giving up the 1 run and 3 hit, 2 walks and 5 strike outs, good job Charlie. Brodie Mac then came on and also held GG for two digs showing he is moving along well with his pitching. Mitch then finished in style as a one man band with a K2 and making both plays hit straight back to him. Lads we stilll need to keep working on our line drives as some of our hits today were a little lucky. Lets flatten them out. No training Wednesday and i will see all Fridays night for training.

U14/2 Saints 8 lost to Goodwood 21
A warm sunny afternoon at Mortlock Park saw the undefeated Goodwood Indians trounced the Saints 21-8. The difference between the two sides was hitting. Goodwood dominated with the bat and we were simply unable to match their power at the plate. I could say that they were bigger older and stronger but our inability to hit to safety was the major difference.
Our pitchers gave away just the three walks compared to the 14 we were offered but we were unable to convert to runs in our favour. The fielding was generally good with just a handful of errors. Max once again pitched accurately getting 68% into the strike zone and pitched 3 long innings on a hot day and kept his head up at all times. The star of the day was Jack Dawson who hit a lovely triple to centrefield, played well at catcher and first and put in a generally faultless display.
Highlights included Ethan's excellent catch at centrefield, Conor's plays at short and Will taking out a runner with a throw from third to first. Other than that there wasn't a lot else to brag about. If we weren't walked or hit (read Alex copping a beauty) we were either struck out or taken out at first. 17 safe hits to one is a fair reflection of why the score was 21-8.

West Torrens 7 d Little League 1 - Sturt 2
FIrst week back and against the table leaders yet to be beaten. Our last outing against West Torrens was forgettable. We certainly did better this time but were still not at the level required to take it up to the Eagles. Jack gave us some good strikes as our opening pitcher but a few too many balls and we allowed the opposition to get cheap runs to have them 2 on the board in the first dig. Our batting for the day saw us swinging reasonably aggressively but only two safe hits for the whole day is not enough to score runs. Thomas O'Connell threw very well to pitch the last three innings without giving up any runs and a strike percentage of 70%. Sam Bennetts was the highlight for the day with good batting and excellent fielding all day - some of the older boys could take on his positive approach to the game. We have two weeks now to prepare for SD - a must win game.

Tyrese Kimotho had an outstanding game pitching a very good inning and had a good day in the box smashing a double and collecting 2 walks. Hugo Dahlen-Flight had a great game as well pitching very well and getting himself 2 hits . Oliver Crutchley showed everyone what a little battler he is doing a fantastic job behind the plate in the heat and in the box he went 2-2 with a walk. Other hits went to Dayton Mitchell with a double , Aran Wittert single ,Cooper Gilbert smashed a double , John Grandsen 2 hits , Bryce Terry also 2 hits , the boys showed when strikes are thrown they know how to go after it , great job boys .

Game 1 Sturt 2 lost to West Torrens 4
There is a lot to play for at the moment with the closeness of the Division 1 competition. You cant afford to be off your game for an innings as the other team will pounce. You can't even afford to miss a location with a pitch it seems at times as you can get hurt.
Daniel Lee and Craig Wright threw 7 quality innings of baseball and were very well backed up by the field as we put together our 5 error less game in a row. But that all means nothing when we can't score enough runs. Offensively we just didn't get that extra base hit at the right time.
After losing the first game we needed to regroup, keep our focus on playing positive baseball and things will turn our way.
Hits - Watts 2, Brice 2, Adkins, Carter, Holmes.

Game 2
Sturt 11 defeated West Torrens 6
Different pitcher, different story. We busted out of the blocks putting 8 runs on the board in the first two innings. Bricey took the mound for the Saints and although he wasn't at his best he did enough to work through 5 innings for 2 earned runs. Lewis took over and he also wasn't at the top of his game but got the job done and the effervescent Ben Packer closed the ninth inning out in 8 pitches.
Hitting wise we picked up 20 hits (Lewis Townsend very unlucky not to have his first A grade hit!). Multiple hit games to many players. Particular mention to Wattsy and Foxy who picked up 4 hits each in this game.
With other results on the weekend it leaves one game between 3rd and 8th on the ladder. We face Kensington this weekend at home in what promises to be a cracking game. We would love some extra support this Sunday to help us over the line. Make sure you get to the club at 3pm to watch what promises to be a very good game of baseball.

Sturt 9 defeated West Torrens 8
A very very gutsy performance. Hopefully reminding the players of how to tough a game out and win.
A difficult start after Dakota Mitchell was unwell on the first and Tom Winter had to take over the pitching duties on extremely short notice! He pitched brilliantly to keep the momentum with us and then slowly the team worked there way back into the game. Rick Mitchell and David Carter kept the Torrens batting lineup quiet in the latter innings.
Offensively, Harrison Wood continues to shine with another 2 hits and a welcome return to form for Will Frogley with a couple of crucial hits and big moments in the game.
Well done boys.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)Sponsored by:Hattam McCarthy Reeves Mastertax

Sturt drew with Golden Grove 4-4
A good game of baseball which turned out to be a disappointing 4-4 tie. In the end it was a our hitting again which let us down, we should have definitely scored a lot more runs than 4 .The highlight of the day was Tom Teague's 2 run HOMERUN in the 4th to put us ahead by 2. Other hits went to Michael Robinson with his weekly hit, Pat Burns line drive down 1st base line for a smoking double, David Hirst who hit the ball hard all day got himself a hit. Tom Teague on the hill did a fine job keeping the opposition to 2 runs for 4 digs with 6Ks.
We really need to pull a rabbit out of the hat to play finals as we now are 2 games out of the 4 , destiny is in our hands boys.

Sturt 21 defeated Henley & Grange 6 @ Sturt
Our second game straight at home and after getting the monkey off our backs last week I was hoping for a repeat and get our second win at home for the season. Things did not look good from the warm up and continued into the first innings, Henley and Grange travelled to our ground and only turned up with 8 thus helping us to an automatic out with the 9th batter. We started with Wild Thing (Norm Sluga) on the mound and he lived up to his name giving up 3 runs before he took himself off the mound. At this point it was bases loaded and the eighth batter was at the plate, we only needed one more out before the automatic 3rd out rule played so we went to the ever reliable Wulffy (Don Wulff). On the play to first they scored one more run but it was then side away and we had to work to get those runs back. Our first at bat and one up one down and I was already thinking the worst but to our credit we came back and made 7 for the mercy rule. We kept them scoreless until the fourth where they made a couple of runs to go to 6 while we made 6 runs in the 2nd and 3rd at bats to put the game out of reach for Henley and Grange to make a late challenge. In the last innings we went to the Doc (Glenn Young) for his first and ONLY pitch of the season and for those of you who know him he did not let us down as he as always at training when pitching batting practice hit one batter (never fails). His first batter was a soft hit back to Doc for the out but only after he fumbled it, his second batter was the unfortunate one who has the bruise and his third batter was again a soft hit back to him, another fumble but the out at first, two out runner at second and the third out comes by the way of the ninth batter, side away, Game. In the box we hit the ball and Henley and Grange found it hard to cover the outfield which helped us. Final score was 21 - 6 for our second win after Christmas from 2 games and both at home, we just need to keep going.

Safe Hits 19 in total: Glen McDonald (Bones) 4 (2D), Glenn Young (Doc) 4 (2D)Don Wulff (Wulffy) 3, Neil Stewart (Spider) 3 (2D), Adrian Hill (Fame) 2 (1D), Norm Sluga (Wild Thing) 2, Ditmar Guehrer (Ditsy) 1.

New Year Edition

On behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club may I wish all our members a happy and prosperous New Year! Our Under 16 and 18 State Teams have once again been thwarted by being rained out in Lismore! I understand that alternative arrangements are still being worked out as to how these games can be rescheduled at an alternative venue.

On a sad note, on behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club, I extend our sincere condolences to the Winter family particularly Tom and Bruce on the passing of Bruce's dad Alan. Our sympathy is also with Sue Brebner and Jackson Brebner-Russ on the passing of Sue's father Charles. I will certainly remember Charles who took a very keen interest in Jackson's progress and certainly never missed a game until ill health meant he could no longer get to the games.

Sturt 3 lost to Henley and Grange 4
A bitterly disappointing loss. This was a chance to consolidate a spot in the top 6 but we let it slip. Defensively I think we did an excellent job - the message during the week was to do the basics and we completed this task. Lewis Townsend and Ben Packer threw well. Offensively we were appalling. We didn't make their pitcher work hard enough. Didn't adjust to the conditions. Didn't get the job done.
Back to the training track this week with a complete single minded focus on making up for this loss against west Torrens next weekend. There is a lot to look forward to this season and a lot of baseball to be played - we just need to make sure we turn up with the right focus and approach every game.

Travelling out to Willaston 1st game back we really wanted to get ourselves a win but in the end our batting let us down and we ended up going down 5-4. We faced a new import pitcher who threw reasonably well but nothing that should have kept us down to 4 runs , we got off to a flier scoring 2 in the 1st, starting off where we left off last year with 1% baseball but that is where it ended. Sam Hollis got the 2nd half of the season well going 2-3, Michael Robinson continued his great season collecting himself another safe hit and Harrison Lightbody in his 1st full game in 3s got himself 2 walks and that was it for us. If we want to be challengers this year come finals time these are the game we need to be winning, just hope this loss hasn't wrecked our finals chances.

Sturt 18 defeated Northern Districts 1
Well the second half of the season has started and I was looking for a good result first up and after seeing some of the boys come back from the Christmas Cheer with a little more on than expected and all failing the skin fold test, I worked them hard at training with plenty of base running, peep tests and basic skills. I am pleased to say that all this work paid off as we came away with an 18 - 1 win. We welcomed a new player for the second half of the season, Fame (Adrian Hill) and after the Rat (Rick Trembath) had sat the first batter down Fame got the next out with a fly ball to third, Doc (Glenn Young) had the last batter out with a fly ball to the catcher. This was a great start with 3 up and down and into bat we go, unfortunately we were unable to plate any runs in our first at bat. The start of the second innings and Northern Districts first batter hits to the fence at centerfield and is looking to make it a three base hit the only problem was some great ball by Wulffy (Don Wulff) who picks it up on the fence throws to the cut off Wild Thing (Norm Sluga) and with pin point he throws it to Fame (Adrian Hill) at third for the tag and the first out, our tail well and truly up at this point, we stop them with out scoring. Our second at bat we opened up the gates with two out we scored the 7 mercy runs for the innings. We had the Rat (Rick Trembath) on the mound and he threw 6 innings, 67 pitches, 45 strikes, 10 safe hits, 2 k's and 0 walks but the field backed him up and made the outs to allow only the single run in for the day. The big difference was with our bats as we had 17 safe hits and 7 walks with 2 innings of 7 runs and one with 4 for the total of 18. A great way to start and we just need to keep going.
Safe Hits: Hill 3, Small 3 (1D), Wulff 3 (1D), Trembath 2, Burns 2, Brock 1 (1D), Young 1, Taylor 1, Guehrer 1,

Welcome to the Christmas edition of the Sturt Baseball Club Newsletter. On behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club may I wish you and your family best wishes for Christmas and the New Year! I can assure you from testing it with Peter over the last few days it is a very powerful system and I am sure is really a land-mark change for our club!

Sturt 8 defeated Northern Districts 2
With Tony away it was great to see the group rally together to get the job done. Tom Becker after a much earned weeks rest was fantastic for us on the hill. Holding a free swinging North's to a handful of hits and no runs through 6 innings. Daniel Lee then after a very short notice finished off the job. We started slowly with the bat, but made the necessary adjustments through the later innings to score 8 runs. Daniel Turner and Dane Adkins were the pick of the hitters picking up 3 hits each. Defensively we were very good, especially Ali Young, who made some solid plays at 3rd base. This was a great way to finish of what has been a good start to the season, however the jobs only half done and is important we come out fresh and firing in the New Year.

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)

Sturt 11defeated Northern Districts 1
After 3 weeks without a win, this was a vital game for us to stay in the hunt of the top 6. Craig Wright did a great job on the hill, throwing a complete game and restricting North's to one run. Defensively and offensively we were very good, with every one doing their job. A special mention to Jared Holland, who was sensational behind the dish. This was a good win for us to gain some confidence going into the New Year.

Sturt 11 defeated West Torrens 4
What a great way to start to 1st half of the season going into the the xmas break with a winning record! This week was always going to be a massive challenge after beating West Torrens , last years premiers , in the 1st round of the year they were always going to look for redemption and to our boys credit we played one of the best games of baseball I have seen from a Sturt Div 3 side in my time at the club.
Tom Teague had his 2nd start in the 3s and was devastating striking 7 in the first 3 digs and giving 0 hits , Tom was simply unhittable , fatigue set in and W.T managed 4 runs in the 4th. Again in the field we kept the sheet clean withe 0 errors again , special mention to the two players up the middle Dakota Mitchell and Sam (Jeter) Roberts who did an outstanding job.
In the box we did what exactly what is needed when it was needed bunts, hit& runs and situation hitting! Its been a long lesson but it more than pleasing to see unselfish team hitting great job guys!
Nick Tuffnell with another best on ground performance got us going with a huge double to ctr right ended up 2-3 with a walk. Ryan Mattschoss kept his great season going with another 2 hit game going 2-3 with a walk, David Hirst was another who had a 2 hit day doing a great job in the box and behind the dish.
Michael Robinson was lead off and did a fine patient job going 1-2 with 2 walks. Other hits went to Craig Wright 1, and Dakota Mitchell who had been belting the cover off it in recent weeks also 1 hit. This is the level of baseball we need to maintain after xmas if we want to play finals , thanks to all the players so far and special mention and a merry xmas from the boys to Kathy Robinson for her fine scoring. Thankyou.
Merry Xmas to all from the Mitchell family.

West Torrens 10 defeated Sturt 9

Division 6 (Coach: Chris Small) Sponsored by: Ace Panel Systems (Major Sponsor)  Smith Motor Group  Force Access Tony Colyer Pty Ltd

West Torrens 7 defeated Sturt 2
Unfortunately the Bat Gods were not watching us again and we struggled to find the gaps and holes with the bats, one shinning light was a home run hit by Shrek over the left field fence with a gail force wind assist, our other run came from Wild Thing with some lovely running and a little hop skip and jump at home plate to be tagged and then have the catcher drop the ball in the tag. Bear was on the mound and again showed that he has plenty left in the tank to throw a complete seven innings. West Torrens hit the ball well and found the gaps and holes and that really was the difference for the day.
I would like to wish all Club Members a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all the Division 6 players.
Drive Safely and we will see you around the club in 2011.

Last weeks Report
East Torrens 16 defeated Sturt 8
With the ground looking great I was hoping to get the monkey off our backs with a win, but not to be. We started with the Bear on the mound and he threw for the whole game unfortunately all the luck was with East Torrens as they hit the ball through the gaps but also had a lot of 2 strike dinkers that just went over the infield. As always we hit the ball but straight to the field, not much more to say about the game other than a great running back catch from Pop at second before taking a tumble but still able to come up with the catch. I will be asking for safe hits and luck from Father Christmas for the rest of the reason.
Safe Hits; Wulffy 2 (1D), Pop 2, Rat 1, Bones 1, Wild Thing 1 & Doc 1

Under 18 (Coach: Ben Packer & Paul Holmes)

Woodville 6 defeated Sturt 2

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Darren French)   Sponsored by: National Tool Distributors Smith Motor Group  Wendy's Burnside

Sturt 15 def Port Adelaide 3

It was very important to come out firing today from the loss the prior week. We had a home game at Glenelg, things got off to a bad start before a pitch was thrown, I forgot the match balls(thanks to Ditmar for turning around and picking them up for me), and Sam Duffield with a black eye from the warm up was a worry as we had the bare nine. However he soldiered on and played an inspired game with three hits including a triple.
Shaun Wright started for us doing well in horrible conditions giving up three runs. Sam Roberts finished the last two holding them scoreless battling well, walks were always going to play a part in the game given the conditions, he did very well to keep his cool. Harrison did a great job behind the plate working well all day!
The most pleasing aspect from todays game was our hitting a vast improvement on last week. Everybody hit and pitch selection was much better, given some erratic pitching this was good to see. With 4 runs in the first, 7 in the second and 4 in the third.
We have some work yet to do with our base-running, which we will work on in the new year. Shaun Wright got everybody excited hitting an in the park home run, we will get him running to a target instead of watching where the ball is coming from, good job nevertheless!
Thanks to Errol for playing two games, and all the boys and parents who drove to Kensington straight afterwards, and to Kris McArdle and his U/14 boys who also helped out in the second U/16 game.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to parents and players the guys deserve a well earned break and have put themselves in a good position with six games to play, with more to work on it gives us all something to look forward too!
HITS: Sam Duffield 3, Henry Brennan, Jesse Kemp, Sam Roberts, Shaun Wright 2, Josh Tindall, Harrison Lightbody, Max Guehrer, Errol Burns 1.

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Greg Milburn)

Sturt 12 defeated Kensington 1
Last game before the break, four regular players on deck, rain and wind, up against the only team we haven't seen sounds hard? not so!
We had some help from Kris McArdle and his boys, Mitchell who pitched the 1st for us very well and cracked a great double to left, Jordan, Sam, Zack, Henry and Dave Lightbody for getting them there thankyou all.
The U/14 lads needed to get to their game, the other U16 arrived and the rain stopped. Kensington were held to the one run while we with some aggressive base running were able to score at will against a good catchers arm. Kensington had no answer to the constant pressure applied by us and it showed as a 12-1 win.
Well done Errol who played two games, Sam with two running catches at centre, Rupert with a great catch at left, Alex with some great catching and Henry still the quickest kid alive.
Thanks again to Josh (well pitched,) Sam, Max,and Henry B( well played )thanks to Frenchy and Karen for all her hard work .
MERRY CHRISTMAS

Under 14/1 Sturt Coach (Coach: Kris McArdle)  Sponsored by: Jock Gilbert Real Estate  McArdle Family

Sturt 15 Def Glenelg 2
Great start to the season with the boys registering 10 win 0 loses, with only 4 players to move up to U16's next year this age group is looking very good for the rest of this season and the next. The dedication the boys have shown towards training, games and the coaching staff is a real credit to these lads, they have really worked hard to get the first 10 win and continue to work on the fundamentals of baseball every week. We need to take this attitude and dedication into the second half of the year, guys it won't just happen we still have a lot of hard work in front of us if we want to go all the way. Firstly I want to thanks the five boys that went out of their way to fill in for U16/2 team at Kensington prior to our game. Mitchell lightbody showed them how to bat picking up 2 great hit for this side. The rest of the boys all showed they have what it takes to play at this grade.
Today's game against Glenelg was another example of getting the job done. We ended up with roughly 15 hit for our 15 scored runs, this shows that we earned all our runs not just sitting back and relying on stealing and errors to get our runs. All the boys hit the ball well today and i was particularly happy with lining the ball out. We have been working hard on the tee and trying to get us all to hit the ball flat into the outfield rather than the pop up shot. Keep working on this boys as this will get us the wins towards the end of the year rather than the big flighty shot that become a 50/50 ball in the outfield. We started Charlie as our pitcher today and he throw the ball very hard, struggled at time with his zone but this did not affect his outing much holding Glenelg to zero runs in two digs. Charlie keep working on your pitching you have a real future here. Zach Evreniadis then went to the mound and even though we only gave him one dig he showed us all he can take on this roll if we need him, also not giving up any runs. Well done Zach keep working on your pitching at training and more game time will come this year or next. Stuart Brennan then came in and finished of the last two digs showing his hard work is also paying off. The field was not really tested today but we were pretty solid making most basic plays. We still need to charge that slow ball, something we will work on. I have thoroughly enjoyed the first half of this season and want to thanks all players for making my job easy. Thanks to Bear, Dave and Garry for all their help so far and to the parents for such great support they give me. Have a good break lads and look after yourselves. I hope you all get looked after by the big man in red and come back out next year fresh and ready to take on the last 6 games with the same intensity we have played with in the first 10. Keep an eye out for an email from Dave with the next training time, have a throw now and again if you can to keep your arm going. To everyone at the club have a merry christmas and happy new year. GO SAINTS make 2011 our year.

Under U14/2 Sturt - (Coach: Jamie Bishop) Sponsored by: DFK Gray Perry

Sturt 14 defeated SD Hawks 2
A strong finish to the ½ way point of the season down at Hawk county on Sunday….(once we found the ground we were to start on, things got underway well!)
They brought out a man-child (U16 we suspect) who threw hard - but Will lead off by spanking his 3rd pitch deep to right for a lovely triple that then turned into a run when the late throw to 3rd went wide!
Nice start! Walks then came for Damon and RJ - and then Angus stepped up and smashed him for a lovely double let him know we were serious with a 2nd run in.
Unfortunately this treatment meant his throwing got harder and more erratic! Young Mac Cross was next up, fresh back from NZ and showed courage to stand up in the box - but he copped a rocket to his forearm that put him out of the game! He did pick himself up and get on base first - well done! This signaled the departure of their "gun"… unfortunately, the replacement seemed to have the touch and threw 3 standing KC's in a row to the next 3 batters! (I thought someone had glued the bats to the shoulders - and attempted to convey my disappointment without spraying too much spittle over them…)
RJ then started on the mound and did well to hold them scoreless despite 2 hits and a questionable HPB!
Our 2nd innings saw us start with another K .. although this time it was swinging too much at everything…. (at least they were listening!)
Will then hit a lovely double and Damon got on with a walk..and then the heavens opened and we lost 25 mins as the ump insisted on a drying period.
An RJ fly out followed by walks to Angus, Stew & Tommy, before Tyson cracked a strong dbl to bring in 2 RBI's. 7 up!
RJ and the team then stopped them in 4 batters with 2 K's and a put out. And then it started! A good lead off hit from Evan started the torrent.. and almost everyone hit well to get on with a mercy 7 run innings- inc 2 safe hits in 1 innings to Damon! Tommy came onto pitch and did his best - it took a while but he did stop them with only 2 runs coming in.
The ump called time and it was over! A great season finish and a reminder that we have strong team when our tails are up.. and we need to make sure that's where we keep them!
Have a fantastic Xmas and New Year - will see you in early Feb - thanks in advance to everyone who's offered to keep things ticking along for the 1st part of 2011!
Team: Reuben Bishop (1-2 +1BB), Tommy Bishop (1-2 +1BB), Mac Cross (1HPB) Stewart Gardiner (0-1 +1BB), Damon Gray (2-2 +2BB), William Hill (2-3 +1BB Dbl, Trp), Daniel Ortiz (1-3), Tyson Ottaway (2-3 Dbl) Angus Read (2-2 +1BB 2 x dbl), Evan Taylor (2-3)

Under U14/2 Saints - (Coach: John McClure)

Hawks 22 defeated Saints 6
Roosters to feather dusters, the rollercoaster of Saints U14/2 season 2010 rolls on. Beaten by a better side on the day. The pitching never got going, the defence was so so and the batting uninspired - it was always going to be difficult to win. A cold, sometimes wet and always windy afternoon at Flinders saw us fall into the break with a 3-6 win-loss with plenty of work to do.
Amongst every dark cloud is some silver lining. Two of our newest players got their seasons underway with the bat. Matt Davey took two safe hits for two at bats and performed solidly at centre field. Will Robinson had his first safe hit and a walk for his two at bats. Pleasing to see both getting amongst it. Ethan, Brandon and Ryack were the only other notables with a safe hit each and that was just about it with the bat. We were given 10 walks which really reflected how difficult the wind had made it for the pitchers but we just weren't able to make any hitting or scoring inroads.
The defence saw some good efforts but just not enough from the team overall. Brandon made a solid debut at catcher and took a good foul catch, Alex took a ripper diving catch in foul ball territory at first and sadly that was about the extent of the fielding highlights. The pitching was inaccurate, 12 walks and just 42% in the strike zone. Our 3 pitchers tried their best but it was a case "one of those days". The hitting from the Hawks was good and what chances we were offered we generally made a meal of. The less said the better.
A special thank you to Brett & Lyn for umpiring and scoring respectively on a miserable day.
Reflecting on the first half of the season it has seen pathos, drama, tantrums, wins & losses, tears, dummy spits and that's just to mention the coaching staff. We've all having a good time - players, parents, coaches whilst endeavouring to all improve and play good baseball. The team is playing with the right spirit and the more we play the better we'll get. See you all in 2011.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young & Jamie Knuckey)

Game cancelled due to weather

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Rick Mitchell & Stuart Crutchley)

LL Saints 6 def - LL Sturt 3
There wasn't to much to report this game , I think we played better in the pre match game amongst ourselves than we did when it counted. Dayton (DJ) Mitchell started the game on the hill and did a great job keeping the the Saints scoreless , Hugo Dahlen-Flight came in and just couldn't find his mojo giving up 4 runs ,Tyrese Kimotho pitched a very good last dig only giving up 2 runs, Tyrese also had the hit of the day with a crushed ground rule double. Oliver Crutchley again did a fine job catching. Hits went to Bryce Terry,Bradley Peters, John Grandsen and Tyrese Kimotho Double.
The boys just didn't quite have their minds switched on to batting not sure whether it was the weather or Xmas but it just wasn't our day and from the warm up you could tell the Saints were switched on and they played the better baseball and the final score reflected this losing 6-3.
Thanx to all the boys it has been a pleasure so far and to the parents , Special thanx go to our 2 new scorers the 2 Jo's , Peter Gilbert on the bench (not the most fun job) and biggest thanx to Stuey Crutchley who has done a fantastic job. Merry Xmas to all and a happy new year!

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Mitchell Knuckey) Sponsored by: Premier Trailers  Watts Agencies

LL Saints 6 def - LL Sturt 3
In a rain soaked, wind blown match we scraped together 3 innings.
In a very brief report Ozzie pitched well in the 1st and Eli pitched well in the 3rd innings with no runs scored.
Eli drove a base hit in the 2nd innings to bring two players home and a total of 4 runs scored in this innings.
After a rain delay, we managed a 3rd innings with the little Saints scoring another 2 runs.
No real standouts in a good team effort against some very friendly opposition - good game to all the boys.
Enjoy the xmas break !

Game 1: Sturt 0 lost to Port Adelaide 6
The scoreline does not reflect how well the boys played in this game defensively. Ben Packer threw the entire game, giving up 5 earned runs - 4 of which came from a 230 foot home run to right field for a grand slam! Ben threw as well as he has all year and needs to keep building on this performance. Offensively however we ran into a brick wall. We didn't manage to move a run past 2 base all game and with only 3 hits it was going to be a struggle to score runs. The Port Adelaide import pitcher threw very well to keep us quiet. Just one of those games where you get outplayed so you move on and concentrate on the next one!
Hits - Lee, Turner, Holmes.

Game2: Sturt 9 defeated Port Adelaide 2
What a difference half an hour makes! The message in between games was about moments and momentum. You need to make the most of the moment when opportunities arise and that leads to momentum that you should never surrender. Port did this in game 1 and we did this in game 2 with a 5 run first inning. David Nicholas made the most of his chance in that inning with a crucial 2 out single that scored 2 runs. Jackson Brebner-Russ also needs a special mention as he didn't get a hit all game but moved runners over when he had to and ended up with 2 RBIs - unselfish, team baseball.
Bricey got the start on the mound and had them coming out a treat. He worked his way through 5 innings with 0 earned runs. Lewis Townsend then took over where Bricey left off and pitched 4 solid innings and continues his education on the baseball field. Lewy gets better everytime he goes out there.
Daniel Lee and Dan Turner went hit for hit all day - both ending the game with 4.
Special mention needs to go to Matthew Macbeth for his first A grade start and first A grade hit. Well done Matt. Also a special mention to Lewis Townsend for his first A grade at bat………..bet you didn't think that would happen Lewy!!!!
Solid performance throughout the whole day from the group and now we turn our attention to the last game for the year - at home against Norths - need to train hard this week and make sure we are up to the task of finishing the year on a positive note.
Hits - Lee 4, Turner 4, Brice 2, Watts 2, Fox 2, Holmes 2, Macbeth, Nicholas.

Woodville 7 defeated Sturt 5
Yet another test for us, it seems to be happening each week , Woodville is another team well in the mix with 6 sides well and truly able to take out this division .We played well all game only to fall short in the bottom of the last dig going down 6-5. Tom Teague came down and had his 1st pitch in the 3s for a couple of years and did a good job holding a good hitting side to 5 runs in 5 digs. Fielding again was a stand out with all the boys doing a great job with the score book reporting no errors .It wasn't our best day in the box collecting only 6 hits . Nick Tuffnell again was outstanding going 2-3 with a double , Michael Robinson again continued a good year with another hit, Adam Kerr making his 1st appearance for the year hit the ball well and had some quality at bats getting himself a safe hit.Tom Teague after doing such a good job on the hill all day clutched up in the last dig with a 2 RBI hit to tie up the game. Our base running was very good with stolen bases to Michael Robinson,Pete Turner, Matt MacBeth ,Adam Kerr and Dave Hirst (2). Again lack of production in the box was our downfall.

Lost to undefeated East Torrens 4-7
Sensational outfield catch by Jess Lemon and a great catch double play by first baseman Lewis Townsend Dylan Holt and Jordan Wayne both pitched well Defensive errors were the difference between the two teams but a hard fought game where we had opportunities to win with bases loaded in 2 innings without scoring Thanks to the fill ins that helped us out

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Darren French)   Sponsored by: National Tool Distributors Smith Motor Group  Wendy's Burnside

Sturt 1 lost to Southern Districts 6
The start of the game was a complete shambles thanks to all who went and played two games, and rushing back from Glenelg! I will ensure this is better organised for future games so we are not starting with 7 players, all be it for a few pitches. We found it tough from the get go, Shaun Wright started on the hill and although slow away he improved with every dig he threw, Matt Franke finished off throwing some good digs.
With three of their runs unearned we made it hard to get into the game, with pitch selection in the battersbox the main concern.
There were some highlights in the field led by Henry Brennan taking a couple of great catches, thanks again to Tyler and his parents making the trip up from Mt Gambier.
Hits; Josh Tindall, Shaun Wright, Harrison Lightbody,Tyler Horrigan, Sam Duffield 1.

Sturt 8 lost to Saints 13
No excuses - 2 different teams took to the field this Sunday compared to the last encounter.... John Macca's lads showed very strong improvement and are to be congratulated.. as to the Sturt Sluggers… we took a backward step this week. Everyone was trying, but a critical errors and errant pitching - and the game got away from us.
Our batting needs to lift, and we need to listen more to the base coaches. I know the boys weren't happy with the way they played - and we need to work on how to turn the game around if we have a slow start! Many thanks to Matt Davey for filling in for us from the Saints, Craig for umpiring, Maureen and Jo for scoring… and Simon Gray for hauling the gear and NOT getting a ticket from the Flinders Gestapo!
Heads up lads and we will finish with a good game against Southern Districts next week before the break!.

Sturt 8 (H) lost to Saints 13 (A)
The previous fortnight had seen a heartbreaker followed by a belting and now this week we faced up to our nemesis. It was an old fashioned tale of good versus evil and the mighty Saints prevailed and defeated the dark side to bring cheer to all good men. The good guys persisted in the face of adversity, derision and prevailed, in what was (to some anyway) a very entertaining game where the difference was an almighty "grand slam" from Jack Dawkins that settled Derby #2 in the most emphatic fashion.
Saints were able to throw accurately and get the ball into play whereas Sturt struggled on the mound giving away 11 walks versus just two to never really give themselves a good chance. We had 4 safe hits and fortunately one of those was a monster to centre field by Jack Dawkins, running home via a pitcher collision to arrive safely for our second all run home run of the season. Jack came through with the goods with a lovely tonk to put us safely seven up with one innings to play.
However, the most pleasing aspect of the game was the defence. We had no strike outs and all our outs came from field plays and we conceded just the 8 runs. With our three pitchers Max, Ryack and particularly Arno throwing accurately the fielding showed discipline and went about the task diligently defending against hits that at the season's beginning we probably would have struggled with. Conor at S/S made the 3 outs to Ty Langford at first base to help us to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first innings. The second and third innings saw us unable to score against some accurate pitching and conceding 5 runs to trail 5-4 after 3. Two good hits in the deciding fifth settled the match and saw us home for our third win of the season.
The star of the day was undoubtedly Jack Dawson with a most timely home run combined with a very good debut as a catcher. Solid, reliable and dependable not much got past Jack. Arno Norrito pitched well for the second week throwing 70% accuracy to give his team the best possible chance. Conor McClure made good plays at short including a catch that somehow he managed to grab. Ty Langford was like a praying mantis on first - all arms and legs getting in behind the ball. Ryack Parsons was his usual explosive self, delivering the unexpected including another "speccie" catch. Will Robinson was welcomed back into the side and has quickly fitted in.
Special mention goes to Matthew Davey who very generously agreed to play for the "Evil Empire" and took just our second outfield catch of the season but unfortunately it was his good mate Arno who he put back in the dugout.
The best part of it all is the concentration and desire of all players to do the right thing by the team. Win or lose if you give your best the result generally takes care of itself. Again thanks to a great team of coaches and supporting parents - it does make for an enjoyable afternoon.

Sturt 14 defeated Goodwood 4
Looking to continue the good form of the last few weeks we were off to Goodwood Indians on a beautiful day for baseball. The boys looked sharp in the batting box first up with walks to the two Bennetts and the two Nicks along with good hits to Thomas, Harry, Jamie D and Cam saw us get the maximum 5 runs. Big Nick stated the pitching for us and had three up and down with two K's and a good play by Sam to help out his pitcher with the third out. Our second bat saw the boys continuing to go after the ball with hits to Sam, Harry and Jack but good fielding denying Cam and Thomas second hits and limiting us to two runs. Nick then continued good pitching this time allowing only 4 batters to the plate and was probably unlucky to give up the single run he did allow. 7-1 up at halfway. The highlights of our third batting innings was a two strike line drive from Matt and a great left field double from Sam to bring home a further run. Simon did our last two innings on the mound and threw quickly. He had full counts on 8 batters and was a bit unlucky on a few calls. Despite this he only conceded three runs in two innings. I was very pleased the way he came back from walking four batters to two consecutive strike outs - thats the way to show character. Good job also to Thomas and Jamie L combining to catch a runner stealing second. Simon backed his pitching with two consecutive hits in the batting box. This along with another hit to Thomas and a few passed balls allowing runs saw us 11-4 up at the bottom of the 4th. A class performance by Harry on the mound for their last at bat saw the final score 14-4. Good job boys but we need to keep working hard to give us the chance to beat the better teams.
Hits Sam, Thomas, Simon, Matt, Harrison, Jamie D 2, Jack, Cam 1.

LL Saints 5 lost Hawks LL 10
In a match dominated by the opposition pitchers the Little Leaguers just could not get bat on ball often enough to challenge the opposition. Both teams opened with 0 runs in their first digs. Harry did a good job for the Saints when it counted and was able to put together enough strike balls to keep them scoreless. Then a couple of wayward pitching innings from the Saints saw them give away 5 runs in consecutive innings. We kept ourselves alive with a chance to at least draw in the final innings when we got 5 runs in the third and kept them scoreless. However, it was no so much our good batting that produced the 5 runs as their pitcher struggled to find the strike zone. So, at 10-5 down with Saints up to bat last, we did have a chance to get away with a draw but we needed our boys to get bat on ball. Well, just when we thought they had depleted their pitching stocks, they produce their best pitcher ! This kid was bigger and faster than anything our boys had seen all season and even our best at bat could not cope with the speed and accuracy they faced in this innings. Austin managed to get a piece of one of these pitches and eventually got himself to 2nd base, but it was all over in consecutive strike outs after that.
On a brighter note, Elliot Bell had his best game of the year, fielded and backed-up well, got away some nice hits and really starting to find his mojo in the batting box. A few excellent coaching tips before the game from the batting master who never played the game did the trick and we look forward to a lot more of the same to the best bat twirler in the league - well done Elliot ! Jacob also had a solid game in his usual joker, giggling style as he got home in the 3rd and managed a another nice hit in the 2nd. I thought it a rather disarming ruse from him to have a good laugh at the pitcher with each and every of his 3 strikes against him - winners may be grinners but even the vanquished can sometimes still find something to smile about - good on ya Jacob ! And then there was the Ozzie who was as pesty as a mozzie behind the catchers mask, egging on his pitchers, needling the batters, oozing all the right body language throughout the game and showing a great hand in picking up some wayward pitching. Well done young man, you did your parents proud ! And a special mention to Eli for a terrific pitching effort in the 4th innings as he kept the opposition sheet clean.
A really big vote of thanks to Lyn Egglestone for taking on the job of referee and for doing it so well and so confidently - with moral support from son Ethan. Thanks also to our debutante scorer, Fraser Bell, who despite some early signs of NFI, proved himself a quick learner and dab hand with the pencil in the box - we look to him to maintain his mojo at the scorers desk just as we hope his son Elliot keeps his mojo in the batting department. There must be a line there about ding - dong go the Bells or Jingle Bells... but I wont go there !
