Grand Final Edition
Last weekend heralded the end of the season for our club and what a season it has been!
On Friday night Baseball SA held their Awards night for juniors and Sturt featured prominently in a number of grades. I am proud to advise that Thomas O'Connell from our Little League 2-Saints took out the Ron & Jill Chandler Medal for the Little League Minor South competition. It was great to see that Harrison Knuckey came third followed by Jack Bennetts fourth from Little League 2-Sturt.
From our Little League 1-Sturt team congratulations to Mitchell Lightbody from coming third in the state followed by Zach Evreniadis who came fourth!
In the Under 16 competition Matthew Franke came third followed by Matthew MacBeth in fourth position!
To check out all the Baseball SA Award winners go to their Junior Medal Award winners page.
On Saturday we were brought back to reality with our Division 2 side missing out on a spot to play off in the Grand Final going down to West Torrens 5-2. It was a disappointing end to what had been a wonderful season for our young Division 2 team, but anyone who had been out to watch them during the season would be reassured that we have some great young talent coming through our club. On Saturday after the game three legends of our club announced their retirement from Senior baseball in Stuart Crutchley, Jamie Knuckey and Rick Mitchell. The contribution that these three individuals have made to our club as players, supporters and mentors of our younger players coming into the senior ranks has been outstanding. Our Club is very grateful for your efforts and I know we will be chasing you very soon for ongoing roles within our club. Once again many thanks for your outstanding contribution to our club!
On Sunday our Junior teams fronted up in four Grand Finals which is a wonderful testament to our Junior programme. Congratulations to Garry Wood's Little League 1-Sturt team who fittingly took out the Ron Macbeth trophy for Little League Major South. You can check out a very happy coach and players now featured on the front page of our website!
Unfortunately that is where our Premiership run finished with our U18, Under 16/1 Sturt and Under U14/2 Sturt sides all missing out on the ultimate prize. Whilst these teams were defeated there is wonderful young talent in all of these teams and our club is very proud of all the players, coaches and officials who worked so hard to get these teams into the Grand Finals in their respective divisions.
In other news which highlights the great talent we have at the Sturt Baseball Club Jackson Brebner-Russ has been selected for the SA Schoolboys team with
Craig Wright and Alistair Young selected for the SA Under 23 team. Congratulations boys on a great achievement!
With more positive news on our talented young players, I hope you caught the great article in the Advertiser on Sam Day. If you missed it you can read the article on the Adelaide Now website.
Whilst the season proper has ended we have the Senior Presentation Night and Junior Presentation Day to come and we hope as many of you as possible can make these events. The Senior Presentation night is for all Senior Teams, Division 1-6 and Under 18 with our Junior Presentation Day for all of our Junior Teams from Little League through Under 16s. Sturt 2 lost to West Torrens 5
Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)
This match saw two very young, evenly matched teams slug it out for a spot in the Grand Final.
Both teams found it hard to get anything going offensively, until we gifted them a couple of runs with a couple of untimely errors. This was enough to give West Torrens the momentum for most of the game and we struggled to get it back.
Tom Teague pitched 6 strong innings and his last month has been outstanding. This will provide an excellent platform to bigger and better things next season from this outstanding talent. Shane Horne also closed the game out very well and other than a quiet patch just after Christmas, should be very proud of the season he has had.
Offensively we just couldn't quite get much happening until we threatened in the last innings but unfortunately it was too little, too late.
Three stalwarts of the club announced they had played their last game at Senior level and on behalf of the club I would like to thank them for their outstanding efforts. Stuart Crutchley, Jamie Knuckey and Rick Mitchell have proved that the game does not know how old you are and have been fantastic contributors to the Senior squad. Well done boys.
This season has been another great year with a completely different group to the Premiership side from the year before. We look forward to seeing you all work hard in the off season and go one step further next year.
It was a perfect morning for baseball as we turned up to Woodville for the Grand Final. The ground also was in perfect order for the game. This game I believe was always going to be close and it would come down to the last few innings to decide a winner and that is how it went, unfortunately for us we were on the wrong side of the score board going down 11-8 in the ninth. We started well with 2 runs in the first and a great catch at centerfield by David Nicholas to get the game going. In the second both sides went scoreless and the third saw us score another run and hold Woodville scoreless. Going into the fourth we were held scoreless with three up and down and Woodville scored 4 after they put the pressure on us with base runners and a few errors came into our game. In the 5th we were able to score 3 more and get back in front at 6-4 with some good batting but could not finish the innings off leaving 3 runners on. We held them scoreless. In the 6th we made one and they made three so going into the 7th it was all tied up at 7 all. In the 7th we had three up and down while Woodville took the lead to go into the 8th at 8-7, this is where our wheels fell off a bit and with a few more errors we were 11-7 down going into our last bat. We needed 4 to get back to even and hope to hold them to force more innings but it was not to be, Woodville made the outs to finish the game. This game was played in great spirit by both teams and it was nice to see some of the Woodville lads show concern when David Nicholas nearly had his head knocked off by a line drive at third from Jay Lunnon, fortunately it was only his helmet that was knocked off and he was in foul territory not to be given out. Lewis and Harrison did a great job on the mound for us but we could not hold the bats of Woodville enough to win.

Thanks to all those that helped out this season especially Pat Hollis who was the Manager, it always makes life easy when someone is helping out in the background, all those parents that pitched counted or scored through the season.
It has been a pleasure coaching this punch of young men as it is not always easy to motivate U18's but when game time came around these boys were always ready to play. We should be proud of where we finished our season and hopefully for those of you that choose to play on this will only make you hungrier for a win.
Hope to see you all at the Senior presentation night.
Congratulation to all other teams that played in Grand Finals over the weekend.
Grand Final defeated by West Torrens 6-8
Under U14/2 Sturt - (Coach: Jamie Bishop) Sponsored by: dfk Gray Perry
Sturt 3 to West Torrens 0 earned runs, unfortunately tells the story of how the first innings implosion effected the outcome of the game. When we needed to do the basics early and hold the opposition out we just couldn't complete the tasks, or make the outs Matt gave us to start with, whereas to our oppositions credit, they did. To be 0-7 after the second was always going to be a tough ask, but to our lads credit they fought back and fought it out to the end with a chance to win late in the game. I was extremely proud of our spirit to get back into the game and not give it away and with D firing on the mound we ran out of innings in the end. Sam Roberts had a day out at second, topping it off with a great play behind first base and the two Matt's fielded solidly at short and third with Dylan completing the outs at first. Jess was reliable at centre and Macca was the stand out hitter with 2 hits for the day, although others hit well without luck and hit regularly to their field who made some great plays to hold us out when we threatened. A grand final loss is a gutting feeling when I thought we had a really good shot at it, to the Eagles credit though, they were the stand out team for the year and did enough to get over the line this day.
Thanks to Smally for his assistance, Sandra for scoring, David for the TM'ing and the parents that helped out with pitch counts etc. Thanks also to the hundreds of spectators that tried to lift us over the line, Bruce for the great ground, the senior squad that helped us out at trainings and club coach Tony Catt, we live to fight another day. GO SAINTS !
Sturt U14 "Sluggers" vs Northern Districts
Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Garry Wood)Sponsored by: TNY Management Consultants
Our 14-2’s have had a great season – won 10 games, lost 4 and drew 1 to finish 2nd on percentage … and then have battled the long way round to make it to the grand final - against Northern Districts.
Northern Districts is a very impressive side – this season they have won 14 games from 15 played – 13 by the mercy rule.
To their credit, our lads came out looking to give it their best shot. Top of the first and we couldn’t get a start – 3 up, 3 down, with 2 strike outs. RJ took to the mound for us and battled hard, but the tight zone and strong batting coupled with a few nervous errors allowed them a 7 run start and it was all before us. Our 2nd at bat showed promise as the boys stuck to the game plan and fought for every at bat. Fraser earned a walk, and RJ saw his pitch early and started our account with a safe hit. Tight base running plus disciplined batting put the pressure on and we hussled 3 runs in by stretching 3 more walks into 3 runs. Bottom 2nd saw tighter control and fielding, but again solid hitting allowed them to get the 3 back and it was 10-3 down. We scrambled 1 more in at the top of the 3rd when Fraser earned another walk (again fouling well to push the count) and RJ hit his 2nd safe hit (again to right field).
Knowing we had to go 7 innings with our pitching roster, we stayed with RJ and got them to 2 out before we went to Tommy to start his closing role. He struck out the 3rd batter to stop them with 1 run in. 11 -4 at the bottom of the 3rd and we had outlasted their primary attack. Top of the 4th and their 2nd pitcher (who also throws very well) stepped up - and we started to hit. Will started with a crisp double, and then Ryack made good contact. Unfortunately, we couldn’t sustain the assault and managed only 3 runs in. Tommy finally showed he is human after all and had an uncharacteristic innings with 2 walks and 2 hit batters… and their hits found holes to allow a 7 run mercy again. 18-7 at the bottom of the 5th.
Top 6th and Matty started us up with a lovely single to right and Fraser got on again with a walk. Unfortunately, RJ couldn’t keep up his hitting streak and hit into a fielder’s choice – Tommy got on via a nasty hit pitched ball but got up and got on with it… but we couldn’t keep it going and with only 1 run in and a score of 18 – 8 with only 1 at bat to go in the top of the 7th, the umpire called time and game.
We were very grateful to have the assistance of Jack Bennett from U12-2’s who came out to give us bench support and came on for Josh Mc (who injured his back at Thursday’s practise, but battled through 3 innings before succumbing) - many thanks to you both for your effort today!
Thanks also to – Simon Gray, a fantastic manager – Maureen Rischmueller who has become a most experienced scorer – Bernard Hill for his 3rd base coaching and training – Helen, Andy and Gary for their regular pitch counting all through the season – and to all the parents for everything from bangle sales to transport scheduling! Special thanks to Trudy who unflinchingly put up with the 24/7 baseball chat, preparation and occasional coach "fill-in" role when I have been away throughout the season!
Congratulations to all … it was a terrific season and you should all be very proud of the way you played – I hope memories of this year live with you as long as they will for me!
Sturt 18 defeated West Torrens 4
Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young)
What a fantastic result and a great way to end a great season. Firstly to WT, they again had a good season and were always going to be hard to beat, so well done to those boys and their coaching staff Jamie and Tim on making the Grand Final.
Congratulations to our boys for their excellent effort not only yesterday, but since Christmas when we asked them to really knuckle down and improve the small things in their game. The base running, support for each other, concentration level and general improvement has been outstanding.
Once again, after a brief "rev up" from the coach before the game, it was obvious that the Sturt boys had come to play. The boys started things off really well in the first innings after 2 excellent catches to Tyson at RF had the strong WT line up 3 up 3 down and we then scored 4 in our first at bat after solid hitting, a good bunt and a long solo home run to Stuart Brennan.
After WT scored a couple in their 2nd at bat the Sturt boys again scored 4 before WT replied with 2 more to keep the game in the balance. However the Sturt boys had victory in their sights and scored the maximum 5 and 5 in their remaining 2 innings before the result became mathematically impossible and the umpire called time and game with the Happy Saints players running out victors 18 to 4.
Our best players in no particular order were
Simon Adkins, Stuart Brennan, Zach Evreniadis, Brodie Macbeth, Mitchell Lightbody, Braydon Richardson, Jack Dawson, Tyson Ottaway, Henry Wood, Peter Littleyuile, Stewart Gardiner and Max Staggs. Yes, that is all of them because they all contributed something yesterday and during the season to get us to the GF.
Special mention must go to Brodie who pitched the whole 5 innings, throwing 73 pitches and only giving up 2 walks while collecting 5 strikeouts, mainly achieved with his excellent change up. He was well supported by the boys in the field, who except for a couple of small issues, made the plays when required.
Thank you to the boys for listening to me all year, their very supportive parents and grandparents, my team manager Jo Gardiner and to David Lightbody, Mitch Dawson and Craig Ottaway for helping at various times during the year in various jobs, this success couldn't have been achieved without your assistance so thank you! To Penny and Jane who have done the pitch counts most weeks and to Julie and Trudy for scoring you are an important part of this success also.
I must say congratulations to Mitchell Lightbody and Stuart Brennan in making the Southern All Stars squad.
Finally to Bruce Packer who again turned our ground out in fantastic condition thanks Bruce.
Little League 2 - Sturt 17 d Kensington 10
Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Darren French) Sponsored by: Brownhill Creek Tourist Park
A glorious Sunday morning at an immaculately prepared Sturt home diamond (thanks Bruce Packer and co!) saw the final game of what has been a very impressive season for the U12/2 Sturt team. We took on the team widely regarded as Sturt's arch rivals - the Kensington Cardinals. Nik Sas took the mound first for us and in his usual very economical style pitched only 18 pitches including 11 strikes. Kensy's first batter was struck out looking but then their bats got swinging and with Nik finding the strike zone reliably, the Cardinals had 5 runs from as many hits and a couple of nervous fumbles in the field. Not to be put off by their start, our boys fired up and equalled their record. Hits to Sam, Jack, Edward and a spectacular triple to Matt Fidgeon getting us the maximum score. So with scores level at the top of the second it was time to break out a new pitcher. Sam Bennetts, our youngest player, debuted on the mound with what must be a record first pitching outing. 9 balls and 12 strikes, for 2 strikeouts and only one run scored has secured Sam a definite pitching future for Sturt! Time to put the pressure on with the bats and the boys responded perfectly. Hits to Nik, Sam, Harrison, Jamie Last and Jack Bennetts brought up 5 runs again for Sturt to go ahead. Our pitchers were really "on" for their final outing of the season. Harrison was next to the mound and managed 2 strikeouts and combined with Will Robinson at first for a good out, for 2 hits and again only a single run, before retiring the opposition after only 19 pitches. Third batting dig and something went wrong! Only 2 runs scored this time, off a good single to Sam and a lovely double to right field to Cam. Kensington then faced fiery Jack Bennetts and although Jack was hitting the strike zone consistently (3 strikeouts!) they managed a last hurrah scoring 3 runs in the 4th dig. Sturt were up by 2 and unassailable but the umpire (Thanks Jamie Knuckey for a great job!) made them earn their win well and truly and sent them back in to complete the innings. The boys made the most of this opportunity and again racked up 5 runs. Good hits to Sam, Harry, Jamie Last and Jack secured an excellent 17 - 10 win.
Great pitching, aggressive batting and base running, an almost errorless outing in the field and plenty of pressure put on the opposition throughout the game by all the team. The depth of talent in this group augurs well for the future of Junior Baseball at Sturt - hope to see you ALL next season.
Little League 2-Saints 8 defeated Goodwood 7
Last game of the season and the boys were ready to play (well hopefully).
We batted first and Arti Dow, in his last game before returning to Japan led off. He was walked. Eli Egglestone batted second and calmly smacked a double to centrefield, scoring Arti. Gavin Barrett put bat on ball, but was thrown out at first. Carlin Stutley and Matthew Johnston both struck out swinging.
Thomas O'Connell pitched our next dig. He faced 4 batters, striking out 2, giving up no runs.
Our second at bat, produced nothing. Isaak Dangerfield hit the ball but was put out at first. Ethan hit safely through second, then stole 2nd and 3rd.
Unfortunately Arno and Seaton both struck out swinging.
Ethan pitched our next dig and threw 12 pitches. He struck out 1, walked 1 and had a hand in the other two outs, giving up a run.
After two digs the score was 1-1.
Our third at bat saw the boys bat and run well. Hits to Arti down, Connor McClure (double), Ty Langford (Double), Ethan and Arno as well as walks for Matthew Johnston and Isaak Dangerfield saw us score the maximum 5 runs.
Some excellent aggressive base running really helped.
Art Dow pitched our third innings and while giving up two hits, he struck out 2, to concede no runs.
After 3 digs the score was 6-1
Our 4th at bat saw Seaton Seigfried get walked, and through aggressive stealing come home when Arti got another hit. Connor McClure and Gavin Barrett struck out and Ty hit into a 1-3 to end the inning.
Goodwood's bats got going in the fourth. Arno Norrito pitched well throwing strikes. He struck out 3 batters and walked one, but Goodwood scored 4.
After 4 digs the score was 7-5.
Matthew led off our last at bat. Patient batting saw him walked. Isaak Dangerfield struck out. Ethan and Arno were walked to load up the bases.
Seaton struck out swinging. Arti Dow was walked as well to score Matthew, then Ethan was caught stealing home ending the dig.
Connor McClure stepped onto the mould for the last dig. He walked the first, struck out the next two, before giving up a hit that scored a run.
He walked the next batter, gave up another scoring hit, then struck out the next batter.
Saints get the win 8-7. The pleasing part of the game was that none of the boys ever gave up. They all kept working and the result came. Well done.
The team would like to wish Arti Down and his Mum, Yoko, all the best in Japan (baseball season is about the start there) and thanks for being part of the Saints. See back at Sturt when you come back.
Congratulations to Thomas O'Connell on the Ron Chandler Medal win. It should also be noted that Sturt U12 side had two players, Jack Bennetts and Harrison Knuckey place 3rd and 4th in the count. A fantastic effort for the club.
Thanks to all parents and for their assistance during the year. A special thanks to our scorers Jo Langford, Lynette Keading and Trudy Evreniadis.
Also thanks to Clive Dangerfield, Brett Egglestone, Terry Evreniadis, John McClure, Lochie O'Connell and Michelle O'Connell, for helping the coaches on match day and at training throughout the year.
One final thank you to the Brownhill Creek Tourist Park who sponsored the team this year, thanks Gavin and Linda Dyer.
