Newsletter Week 21

Last weekend saw all of our junior teams play in Preliminary Finals for the chance to play off in Grand Finals next weekend!

This is an outstanding achievement for our club and I would like to congratulate the players, coaches, managers, support staff and parents for their support throughout the season.

Six of our junior teams competed for a spot in the Grand Final this coming weekend and four of our teams made it through. Congratulations to Under 18, Under 16/1, Under 14/2 and Little League 1 -Sturt who richly deserve a spot in this weekends Grand Final. Please visit our Game Day Schedule to check the time and location of all of these games.

Please get out and support these junior teams in their quest to win a Premiership for Sturt!!

I would also like to pay special mention to the two junior teams who missed out on a chance to play off in the Grand Final, namely U14/1 - Sturt who went down to Golden Grove 8-7 and U16/2 - Sturt who went down to Port Adelaide 9-8. The fact that both these games were decided by one run just goes to show how close we were in both these games. The Sturt Baseball Club is very proud of your efforts and we know that we have a very strong talent pool of players in these two teams. Congratulations on a magnificent season!

Our Division 2 side is playing a home final on Saturday against West Torrens at 2.00 pm for a spot in the Grand Final so please get down to Norman Reserve to support our Division 2 side attempting to make back to back appearances in the Grand Final!

I am pleased to let you know that our own Paul Mildren was runner up for the 2010 Helms Medal. The Helms Award dating back to 1962 is regarded as Australian Baseball’s most prestigious award; and is awarded based on a players merit in Claxton Shield competition.

Full details on the Helms Medal is available from the ABF website, but the citation listed for Paul is reproduced below:

Paul Mildren announced his return to the forefront of Australia’s elite pitchers this year in emphatic style. After a lengthy year in the US; book-ended by both World Baseball Classic and World Cup duties with the National team; Mildren turned his focus to his native South Australian side in their storied return to Norwood Oval. High amongst the League leaders in Innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA and wins; Mildren was the staff "ACE" on a club that turned a miserable 2009 campaign, into the near storybook worst-to-first finish this year. Always the consummate professional, his tenacity on the mound was second to none; highlighted by a completed game effort against eventual champions Victoria in his "must-win" final start of the regular season

While talking about Claxton Shield remember that next season promises to be bigger and better with the launch of a new league, the Australian Baseball League. The new league, with Major League Baseball as the primary shareholder will provide the opportunity for our states best young talent to showcase themselves with the hope of becoming Australia’s next Major Leaguer. To keep up to date you can subscribe to the SA Claxton Shield Baseball Team Newsletter by visting the ABL website.

Sturt 1 lost to Glenelg 12
A disappointing performance from a side that can play a lot better. Shane Horne pitched reasonably well but the group couldn't hold back a very aggressive Glenelg outfit.
There are a number of areas which we can work on during the week and I have no doubt that the team will put up a much better fight this weekend against West Torrens.
The game is back at Norman Reserve so we expect huge support from the club to help us get over the Eagles!

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)

Sturt 3 defeated Glenelg 1
Well what a fantastic game of baseball by both sides on the weekend, this was a real pitchers games from start to finish. The first innings was three up and down for both sides.

In the second we had three up and down while Glenelg scored one from a bleeder to centre/right field.

In the third we we unlucky not to have runners on after Jarrad had a safe hit and then Harrison Wood lined drived to the pitcher on a hit and run for two out and then a strike out to finish the innings for us, three innings played and we had just gone through the line up, this was going to be a tight game. Lewis was on the mound and we had made a few fielding errors but Glenelg had only scored one run at this stage.

In the fourth we had two runners left on but we had continued to hit the ball all we needed to do was find the gaps. We ended the 4th with the score still at 1-0 down.

The fifth for us was the same as the last 4, hitting the ball but for easy outs, while in the field we again held them scoreless.

The sixth was the same for us three up and down and for Glenelg they left one on the bases for no runs as well.

In the seventh we had two runners on but could not push them around with a bunt at a crucial part of the game and again came away with no runs, Glenelg seem to be doing everything right to hold onto their one run lead. Lewis got the first out in the 7th before his count was over and we went to Harrison Wood to hold them, we finished the dig with three up and down.

Into the eight and Glenelg still on top 1-0, first batter for us out with a hit to short stop, at this point Glenelg's first pitcher had thrown 93 pitches and Glenelg made a change, our next two batters got walks and then when we needed a hit Matthew MacBeth comes up with a triple to score two followed by a single to David Nicholas to score one more and suddenly the boys were alive and the game had changed, in the bottom of the 8th we got a lucky break when Glenelg's runner going to second on a hit, made it safe and then for some reason thought Sam Hollis at first had taken a catch he walked off the base and headed for the dug out, at this point in time the ball was back to Harrison who put the tag on the runner as he walked to him, this gave us two out and we made the next out for side away, going into the 9th 3-1 up.

We had three up and down and now only needed the three outs to win. Batters 7, 8 & 9 for Glenelg to come and the first batter gets a safe hit, we walk the second and the third lays down the bunt to be out at first but had advanced the runners. Top of the line up who hits to short and Ben Papps stretches to get the ball, holds the runner and throws to first for the out, the runner at second runs to third which forces the runner home and with a throw on the money from Sam to Macca who takes a hip and shoulder from the runner, eats some dirt, looses some skin from his nose and it running like a tap with blood comes up with the ball and the third out for the Sturt boys to win 3-1 and move into the Grand Final next week, yes that is right GRAND FINAL next week.

The boys played their normal game and kept themselves in it and at the right time we got the hits to put us in front. Defensively we had some errors but they never dropped their heads and offensively we hit the ball and found the gaps at the right end of the game. Lewis Townsend again was magnificent on the mound and Harrison Wood finished off strongly. Matthew MacBeth was solid behind the plate all day and then went on to play U16's in the afternoon.

A big thanks to Dakota Mitchell for sitting on the bench all day for us his enthusiasm is great, he also went on to pitch a great game for the 16's in the afternoon. We will play Woodville at Woodville this week in the GRAND FINAL and as I said to the boys after Christmas we are good enough to win this competition and from what I saw on the weekend they are ready to win it all.

Lewis - 110 pitches, 72 strikes, 38 balls, 8 k2's and 2 BB.
Harrison - 31 pitches, 19 strikes, 12 balls, 1 K2 and 1 BB
Safe hits: MacBeth 1 triple, Nicholas 1, Small 1, Wood 1.

Preliminary Final: Sturt defeated Glenelg 9-2
Playing against an unknown quantity is always difficult and we went into this game with caution. The younger Glenelg line up with Mt Gambier pitcher Cam Smith who did a great job early were formidable opponents who played right up to the preliminary final requirements. Fortunately for us, they hadn’t seen Dakota all year and he threw one great game with extremely impressive stats (no hitter – no less), D pitched his heart out and the field made the plays when required with Sam, Macca and Matt all making the basic outs with Dylan finishing off perfectly and Brad called and caught another great game behind the plate.

Offensively we had 12 hits and 8 walks and found gaps when it counted to score runs with solid hits to the main part of the lineup with Matt, Macca, Dylan, Brad, D, Jack and Jess all with good RBI’s to their names. Overall, everyone played their part to the team win, we face off against the strong West Torrens unit next week in the Grand Final and as all finals anything can happen, focus, plan and apply and we’ll work hard to do our best. A great team win and a tough game next week. Congratulations to all the Saints teams next week in the Grand Finals and to those that missed narrowly, it is all part of the education, but well done to get where you finished.
Go all Saints next week.

Sturt 7 V Golden Grove 8
This game was a real nail bitter with both team playing a very high standard of baseball. Unfortunately in the end things didn't go our way. We managed 12 hit for the day to GG 10 but GG managed to put the ball over the Little league length right field fence 3 times to score 6 of their 8 runs. On a normal size ground at least two of these hit would have been routine outs, while we hit line drives up the middle. Well done to Sam Cavanagh who managed to put one out himself after coming off the bench great job Sam.

Special mention to Henry Brennan who pitched the first 4 digs with a high strike percentage and also picked up 4 hit from 4 at bats. Tyler Horrigan picked up two hit and was as usual solid at third. Jordan McArdle picked up a hit and blocked well behind the dish in crucial moment of the game. Charlie Goldworthy made 2 outs at first from right field and also made some solid catches he also picked up a hit for the day. Jayden Tremabath, Max Guehrer and Tyler Lunnon also picked a hit for the day. You guys should be proud of your efforts as i am, you all gave it your all and we nearly got there holding a 6-2 lead in the fifth. I would like to thank you all for letting me coach such a wonderful group of lads, we bonded well as a team. I hope to see you all back next year having fun with your baseball.

Firstly a big thankyou – Stewie and Tyson were great additions to our team on Sunday and I wanted to lead off by thanking them for their assistance (and the parents for letting them!) – already had a tough long game from 9am.. and stuck around to come in at the death and give us a valuable hit (Tyson) and a well fought walk Stewie!

Thanks to Trudy for organizing the celebration hot dogs and ice- creams (and Lisa for assistance!) and Simon for the chockies!
And thanks to Jo Gardiner… she emailed some pics thru and they are now on our “rogues gallery!” - go to http://picasaweb.google.com/sturt142s (and a selection of the Ambergs pics from pre Xmas are up too!)

So great game team… fought it out and stuck to the knitting to earn your Grand Final berth!

So about "that game"! – we’re looking fwd to it!

The details are: Grand Final

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Garry Wood)Sponsored by: TNY Management Consultants

Sturt 13 defeated Southern Districts 2
What another excellent result for the boys and the large supporter base that got up bright and early for our preliminary final against the Hawks.
After the coach arrived at the game without various parts of his uniform and quickly retreated home to attire himself correctly, things slowly but surely improved!

From the warm up it was clear that the Sturt boys had again come to play. The boys weren't quite as "hot" as the week before but they good steady baseball against a very improved Hawks outfit.

It was a real danger game for us after last week's great result and it was going to take another "team" performance and that is what we got !

Mitchell Lightbody pitched an excellent game throwing all but 1 pitch and was well caught again by Henry Wood who continues to improve with every game. This week the challenge will be for Brodie to come out firing when he gets the start against our grand final opponent in West Torrens who we know will be very difficult to beat!
The hitting was solid all day with multiple safe hits for Simon Adkins, Zach Evreniadis, Stuart Brennan,Jack Dawson and Brodie Macbeth and single hits to Tyson Ottaway and Henry Wood.

Again the boys pitch selection was better and there was continued improvement in the base running (apart from the coaches error) which maintained a lot of pressure on the Hawks.
We now will need to improve further as we come up against West Torrens!
So now it is back to hard work on the training track for one last time for the season, lots of extra swings at home and early nights and the right attitude on game day.

Excellent effort boys 1 game to go , let's give it our best shot !
Go the Saints!!!

Thanks again to Bruce Packer and the parents who helped set up the ground , it looked and played great.
Hope to see as many supporters as possible out the against West Torrens at Norman Reserve midday Sunday.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young)

Goodwood 10 defeated Little League 2 - Sturt 2
After a very good performance at batting at training on Wednesday night I was anticipating big things for our game this week. I must admit I was a little worried after warm up when our boys looked more ready for bed than a game of baseball. Our first at bat saw just a solitary hit to Harry with a few walks allowing us just the single run. Nik took just 24 pitches and a 1 to 3 put out to have us 1-1 at the bottom of the first. Jamie Last started our second bat with a good two strike single but the wheels fell off and three KC's swinging at wild pitches saw us still just the single run. Corey gave us his second visit to the mound for the year and saw it out well despite some good hitting and a few walks saw goodwood 6-1 up. Our third bat continued with the theme of the day with some better contact but still struggling to select the pitches to hit and we managed another run to double our total!! Mac Cross then gave us his debut pitching performance. We were all impressed with he pace and when he found the strike zone the opposition didnt look like hitting him. Although they managed four runs a KC on your first visit to the mound is worth remembering. A 10-2 loss not our best performance but you have days like that. If we took anything out of the game it is that we need to work on pitch selection - however that is probably one of the hardest things to master in baseball so we have plenty of time to work on it.

Newsletter Week 20

The first weekend of Junior Finals resulted in all but one of our junior teams winning their games! This is a great effort by our junior players and the good news is that the team that lost on the weekend, the U14/2 - Sturt team have a second chance this coming weekend, meaning that all of our junior teams are still alive in the finals.

Please visit our Game Day Schedule to check out all the Junior finals being played on Sunday! Our home ground will be busy on Sunday hosting three of the junior finals for Little League 1-Sturt against Southern Districts at 10.00 am, followed by Under U14/2 Sturt versus West Torrens at 12.30 pm with the final game at 3.00 pm, Under 16/1 Sturt versus Glenelg.

Our Division 1 side needed to win its game against Goodwood on Sunday and unfortunately we went down, meaning that Goodwood took the sixth spot on the ladder one position ahead of us with our Division 1 side finishing in seventh position for the season. Whist the team is "gutted" by missing out on playing in finals, our Division 1 side has had a great season, beating a number of the teams that will now contest finals and finishing the season three positions higher than our 2008/09 result of tenth.

I would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the Division 1 players who put in a big pre-season and continued this hard work throughout the season. Thanks also to David Lee as the Manager and Heather Turner as the scorer for their significant contribution throughout the season.

Our Division 1 coach Tony Catt has once again put in a stellar performance as our Senior Coach. Tony's commitment to our club and the manner in which he has developed our young senior squad is a credit to him and we thank him most sincerely for the huge amount of time he gives to our club. There is no doubt that Tony's leadership is shining through not only with the Division 1 side but also his influence in developing junior players to play in our Division 2 and 3 sides as well.

Our Club has a committment to developing junior players and it is great to see that Tom Winter's Division 2 side has finished the season in second place! Well done Tom! We wish the Division 2 side all the best for their clash with Glenelg on Saturday at 2.00 pm at Glenelg! Please get down to Glenelg to support our Division 2 side!

Congratulations to the following junior players who have finished the season in the top five vote receivers as voted on by the umpires each week:

  • Jack Bennetts (Little League 2-Sturt)

  • Harrison Knuckey (Little League 2-Sturt)

  • Thomas O'Connell (Little League 2-Saints)

  • Zach Evreniadis (Little League 1-Sturt)

  • Mitchell Lightbody (Little League 1-Sturt)

  • Matthew Franke (Under 16/1 Sturt)

  • Matthew MacBeth (Under 16/1 Sturt)

The winner will be announced at a Baseball SA function on Friday 19th March 2010. Best of luck to all of our players who have been nominated.

Well done to the Little League 2 Sturt and Saints teams who hosted a home derby on Wednesday night at our club. I have received great feedback on the night and I believe that the club will try and arrange for the Little League home derby's to be played as twilights at the club next season given the success of Wednesday's night's event. Given that Little League do not have the opportunity to play at Norman Reserve this initiative provides our Little League players and their families the chance to be introduced to our home ground.

Sturt vs Kensington.
This match on the Saturday was rained out and the entire round of matches was cancelled. OUr game managed to fit 8 innings of baseball in and in very difficult conditions the boys played pretty well.
We skipped out to an early lead courtesy of a 3 run home run to David Carter. Unfortunately Dave twisted his knee batting next at bat which finished his season. Dave should be very proud of the season he has had and I have certainly appreciated his help.
Tom Teague was given the next challenge of his young pitching life with a start on the mound. His performance in this game was 100% better than last week and now he really has some incentive in the offseason to keep working hard on his game.
With the round cancelled, the equation was simple - beat Goodwood the next day and we play finals.

Sturt 0 lost to Goodwood 13
A very disappointing end to a very successful season.
We had everything to play for and were not good enough on the day. A 4th inning grand slam to Ben Wigmore broke the game open and we could not get the bats going against a dominant Darren Fidge.
This result will certainly burn in my guts all winter and i hope the players will use it as motivation for next summer. It showed the difference between where we are as a club at the moment and how much harder we need to work to play finals baseball. I certainly believe we have the group that can do it.
The group were much improved in all areas of there games this season and a similar improvement next season will make this a great side for a long period of time.
I would like to thank my team manager David Lee for all his help again this season. The amount of work Dave does for the seniors is outstanding and we really appreciate it.
I would also like to thank Bruce Packer for all the work he does but particularly on the ground. We certainly do not take for granted how the playing surface looks every week and on behalf of all the players thank Bruce and Dave Lee for all their help in this area.
Thanks to the players for listening to me all season. Your support for me is what makes my job a lot easier. It is a privilege to be given the role of coaching this group and I look forward to another season at the helm of this young club.

Sturt 6 lost to Kensington 9
The equation for the B grade was also pretty simple - win one game this weekend and ensure they stay in second spot and a chance at a home final.
After jumping out to an early 6-3 lead, the boys played some ordinary baseball to finally lose. Bot sure why the boys werent quite switched on but needed to quickly turn their attention to the Sunday game to finish the season on a strong note.

Sturt 9 defeated Goodwood 5
Playing back at home made all the difference. The boys were switched on and Shane Horne was doing the job on the mound. Dane Adkins continued to light it up with the bat and the boys all chipped in to get the win.
This now means the B grade finish second which is an outstanding effort considering the slow start to the season.
This Saturday we travel to Glenelg to play the bays and look forward to seeing everyone down there to support us on our finals campaign.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)

Final Game 1: Sturt 14 defeated East Torrens 10
We played East Torrens for the first final at home after finishing the season in fourth spot. We had played them twice through the season and had a loss in the first game and a draw with the second so this was going to be a close game.
We took to the field and started with Lewis Townsend, he has been a great pick up since Christmas and we are very happy to have him playing at Sturt, he will be one to keep an eye on over the years, any way back to the game first pitch HPB and East Torrens have a runner on. No problems we will get him at second and with Matthew MacBeth behind the plate that is what happened, this put the stop to ET stealing for the day with only one more attempt (which was safe), at the end of their bat they had scored one run. Our first at bat saw us have five attempted steals for four safe, and some very disciplined batting in the box, we had made six runs for the early lead. We held ET scoreless in the second while we scored 4 more to have a handy lead going into the third innings. ET kept plugging away at our lead with two runs here and two runs there while our bats went to sleep. Lewis was throwing a great game but some of those little hits that just go over the infield were frustrating so when Lewis finished at the end of the 6th innings the score was 10 – 7 up. Top of the 7th and Harrison Wood to the mound for three up three down and it was all in front of us. ET had a run on and we were asleep but when I asked the boys the question do they want to win or not they showed me what they can do. We scored two runs of a double from Sam Hollis after Jayke Wayne had laid down a great bunt to advance our runners to third and second, to go 12 – 7 up with two innings to play. In the 8th ET scored 3 and started to look like they might get us in the last but we had other ideas, Matthew MacBeth started of with a triple, David Nicholas was unlucky with a hard hit line drive to a good catch from ET third baseman, one out Macca still in the scoring position, Ben Papps gets a walk and steals second, Lewis Townsend up to hit a double and score two more for us to go into the last with a score of 14 – 10. We need three outs to win, ET first batter grounds out to short, second batter grounds out to second and the third batter pops up for the catcher. Three up three down to win the game. This was a fantastic win even though the boys gave me a few more grey hairs through the middle but came back with some spirit.

We will face Glenelg down at Glenelg next weekend and if the boys are fired up like they were for the last two innings we can win it. BRING IT ON See you all at training Thursday night.

Final game 1: Sturt defeated West Torrens 8-1
We came up against top side West Torrens, having been beaten by 8 and 10 runs previously this season, however, finals can play funny tricks on teams and this game was no exception. Assisted by the WT battery having a tough day with us only having 2 earned runs of our 8 we managed to pressure the opposition to make mistakes they hadn’t exposed on previous occasions. Brad caught a great game and Macca, “D” and Sam made positive strong plays all day in the infield with Dylan completing the outs confidently. Matt pitched an excellent game, bamboozling the batters for 5 innings with good control, accuracy and movement on the ball, well called by Brad, and “D” showed the finesse he is capable of, closing out the last 2 innings with fast, controlled throwing. The combining contrasts of Matt and “D” on the hill seems to be operating extremely well at the moment. Our fielding stuck to the basics and made the outs as they were there. Our batting overall could have been better, at times we swung at some high pitches and we struck out 11 times, trying to hit the cover off the ball, but in contrast we also took 14 walks, Macca hit a hard long triple into the wind to get us going in the second, scoring on a pass ball and we gradually built on our scoreline as the game progressed against 3 opposition pitchers in the 7 innings.
A fantastic birthday present for the coach, who was very proud of the boys this day and I thank everyone for their best wishes.
Next week we front for another finals match, cut throat this time and a need for a win to play in a home grand final.
Go Saints !

Final Game 1: Sturt U14 "Sluggers" 4 lost to Northern Districts 12
First semi final – and the first time we have ventured out to Northern Districts this year. We haven’t yet cracked this team yet … but I believe that one more time and we’ll give them a really close run! The boys stood up well to the 7 innings final format – over 3 hours the boys didn’t stop and it was a credit to them (and the parents)
We came out swinging against the hard throwing opposition – and Master Matt set a great agenda with a solid single. Wiley Will (out of his sick bed!) then hit and brought him in – and then Tommy 2Tuff cracked a nice single to score a second run. RJ took to the hill and after a nervous start with a couple of walks got down to biz and stopped them with 1 in.
Offensively, we couldn’t trouble the scorer for the next 3 innings as we struggled to get safe hits and capitalize on a couple well earned walks by Angus and Ryack – to their credit, the boys went out and made contact and took the pitcher deep into the count most times and burned up his pitch count well.
Meanwhile our defense did its best – RJ battled hard but the walks crept in – another 2 runs in the 2nd.. then in the 3rd had them 2 out but couldn’t get the 3rd out - and so after 2 runs in I went to Fraser… but he really struggled to find the strike zone and we gave up the 7 runs mercy.
Bottom of the 4th innings and we gave the ball to our star closer… knowing we had to finish inside 80 pitches with him. Once again this U12 lad had us shaking our heads – he was cool as a cucumber… 3 up 3 down (inc 2 strike outs) in the 4th, 3 up 3 down (inc another 2 strike outs) in the 5th… and then the 6th just got away from him with 3 hits and fielding errors to let 2 runs in – but a massive game from him!
Meanwhile offensively, at the top 5th and we finally got a chance to see their 2nd pitcher (who also throws well!) ….and the boys started with the bats! Matt hit hard but got put out… and then solid singles to Fraser, Will and RJ. Tommy and Damon also both connected, but were put out – BUT! Another 2 runs in and we had our tails up. Unfortunately in the 6th Josh made solid contact but was put out, Dan the man drew a good walk and then Reliable Ryack cracked yet another safe hit (this U12 also just keeps on putting bat to ball!) A sharp pick off from their catcher caught Dan napping and then one more out and it was all over as we couldn’t score 8 to tie it up - and the game was stopped at the top of the 7th.
We improve every week.. and next week’s 2nd semi should see us peaking at exactly the right time! Once again many thanks to Simon (manager), Bernard(3rd base coach) Helen (pitch count) and Maureen (scorer!)

First Final: Sturt 12 defeated West Torrens 1
What a fantastic result for the boys and the large supporter base that ventured to West Torrens for what was always going to be a tough encounter with the quality WT outfit.
Well what can I say, FANTASTIC, BEST TEAM PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON,EXCELLENT!
From the warm up it was clear that the Sturt boys had come to play, and play they did. After a good solid warm up the boys supported each other well from the very first pitch. I think the boys would agree that this was the first time this season that the encouragement for their teammates was where it needs to be!
This was by far the best overall performance from all the boys with their concentration and involvement at a whole new level.
Brodie Macbeth threw close to the perfect game going deep into the 5th innings and was well caught by Henry Wood who continues to impress behind the plate. Mitch Lightbody closed the game out successfully after a great catch to Stewart Gardiner. The challenge for Mitch will be to come out firing this week when he gets the start against our next opponent!
The hitting was solid all day with multiple safe hits for Simon Adkins and Zach Evreniadis and Stuart Brennan and single hits for Jack Dawson, and Braydon Richardson. While it doesn't appear a lot of safe hits the boys pitch selection was great and many went to a full count which contributes to the team in regards to opposition pitch count. With continued improvement in the base running the boys maintained a lot of pressure on the fielding team.
It was nice to get all boys on the ground at some stage during the game and all the boys contributed in some way. We will need to improve further as we come up against the remaining teams including West Torrens. It is now a week by week situation and a loss means the season ends.
So now it is back to hard work on the training track, lots of extra swings at home and early nights and the right attitude on game day.
Again a reminder to the boys that several positions are up for grabs week in week out so their efforts at training on Wednesday night needs to be spot on to ensure a position on game day.
Excellent effort boys but don't let it slip now !!!!
Go the Saints!!!

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young)

Little League 2 - Sturt 15 d Little League 2 - Saints 14
A balmy Autumn night, the picturesque Sturt Ground, an enthusiastic crowd and a home derby - what more could the boys want to fire them up for a big match. The teams were at 1 a piece after the first two contests and both keen for a win. As home team Sturt started in the field with Jack Bennetts taking the mound. A nervous start saw us walk a few batters and then a solid hits by Thomas O'Connell (double) and Eli (single) saw four runs on the board and two still on base. Jack then showed us what he is made of by KCing the next three batters.
Arti started the pitching for the Saints and threw very well with strike percentage of over 60% but a triple by Nik, walk to cam, single to Jack, another triple by Edward and two bag by Harrison saw it 4 all, bottom first. Harrison threw our second innings and kept up the strong performances he has had on the mound by throwing good strikes. Solid batting by Carlin, Connor, Thomas, Isaak and Gavin along with some errors in the field saw the Saints get the maximum 5 runs. Thomas having got two hits from two at bats came to the plate for the Saints. Like Harrison he threw well with mostly strikes but good batting from Sam, Harrison, Edward and Will saw the score 9 all at the end of the second innings. Nikolai showed us how much his pitching has come along with his performance on the mound. 20 pitches along with two put outs to first saw the Saints left on 9 runs. Connor M'Clure had the difficult job of pitching the next dig to try to keep the scores level. Hits by Matt (double), Jack and Edward(double) along with a few walks saw Sturt 5 runs up. Cameron then threw some good velocity on the mound but struggled a little to put three strikes together, along with hits to Connor and Matthew saw the scores level but with Sturt a bat to come. Matthew Johnston then had the unenviable job of trying to hold Sturt scoreless to tie the game. Like Cam he just struggled to get three strikes in a row but did have two out without any runs given up. Cameron on full count, loaded bases and two out made for an exciting finish - the result a one run win to Sturt.

Thanks to all those who helped on the BBQ, to Lori for controlling the finances, Alistair for umpiring and everyone else who helped out to make it a great evening.

Newsletter Week 19

This weekend heralded the end of the season for Division 3- 6. Thank you to the players, coaches, scorers and supporters for their assistance throughout the season. The weekend also saw double headers for our Division 1 and 2 sides. Division 2 came through the weekend with a perfect result, winning two out of the two games, with the most impressive win being on Saturday against top side Glenelg beating them 6-1 and consolidating their second spot in this Division. Division 1 went down to Glenelg on Saturday and travelled out to Northern Districts on Sunday for a win to keep Division 1 final hopes alive!

To be sure of a finals spot Division 1 needs to win at least one of its games next weekend and once again we have double headers on Saturday and Sunday with our senior boys playing at Kensington on Saturday starting off with the Division 2 at 2.00 pm followed by the Division 1 at 4.30 pm. On Sunday we are home playing Goodwood at 12.30 pm in Division 2 and 3.00 pm for Division 1. For our Division 1 boys Sunday is shaping up as a finals game since if we can knock off Goodwood we will be in finals for the first time in nearly a decade! Please make every effort to come out and support our senior boys next weekend!!

Congratulations to our Junior teams! All of our junior teams have made finals this season, which is a testament to our coaching staff and the talent of our young baseballers! In Juniors, finals are played from Under 18 through to Little League 1 with the Little League 2 sides continuing to have home and away games to coincide with finals games for the other junior teams.

All finals games for this coming weekend have been scheduled and are now available for viewing from the front page of our website of if you have a mobile phone with internet access visit Saints Mobile edition for the times and locations of games.

I would also like to remind you that on Wednesday night at 6 pm we have the Little League Derby between Little League 2 - Sturt vs Little League 2 - Saints. The BBQ will be fired up and it should be a great twilight game for both these teams to play at our home ground. As you are aware there are no finals for Little League-2 so their season continues!

A big thank you to Norm Sluga and Dean Franke who have cooked the BBQ on Thursday nights for the boys after training. They have used the money raised to purchase a vacuum cleaner for the club and on Thursday night presented it to Sonia, one of our bar staff who together with Rosanna do an an outstanding job not only of running the bar but also working tirelessly cleaning our clubrooms. There is no doubt that they new vacuum cleaner will assist them greatly in their work!

During the week we had a request from Bernadette Donaldson regarding her son's lost baseball glove. On Wednesday 10th February at a Tryout Training session her son Michael misplaced his baseball glove.
The baseball glove brand is Wilson and it is black and brown, his name should be on the inside label either saying MPD or Michael Donaldson. Bernadette would greatly appreciate your help in trying to locate Michael's glove. You can contact Bernadette on 0419 827 754 or email her at bdonalds@policecu.com.au

Sturt 0 lost to Glenelg 11
Tom Teague got his first Division 1 start and he was set an awesome task against the very strong Bay hitting lineup. After a shaky start, he settled down, found his rythm and threw quite well. Unfortunately the bays snuck away early and offensively we got bogged down leaving another 11 runners on.
There wasn't much to cheer about but certainly Teaguey was a bright spot on a gloomy day.
Hits - Turner, Carter, Brebner-Russ

Sturt 17 defeated Norths 8
Finally we got our mojo back in the batters box!
Special mention to Dave Carter who collected 5 hits with 2 home runs taking his daily tally to 8 hits and 3 home runs. A massive effort. Offensively we hit the ball hard from start to finish and another special mention should go to Sam Hollis who picked up his first A grade hit. Well done sam - reward for you for a lot of effort this season.
Defensively we held Norths at bay but they just kept making good contact and finding gaps all day. Craig Wright was particularly impressive at the end to close the last 3 innings out. This was a welcome return to form.
This win keeps our finals chances alive and basically our finals series must start a week early. We must win one game from two this weekend to make the finals. We would love a massive home crowd on Sunday as we play our old rival Goodwood which could turn out to be an elimination final. Get out and cheer the boys home!
Hits - Carter 5 (2 HR), Holmes 4, Brebner Russ 3, Green 3, Roeger 2 (HR), Frogley 2, Hollis, Turner, Young

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)

Sturt 6 defeated Glenelg 1
Another great effort by this group. Lewis Townsend started the game for the Saints and did a magnificent job against the top side (only lost one game). Lewis threw 6 innings for 0 earned runs and a few strikeouts. This would be a handy performance in any schoolboys side.
Will Wirth closed the game out in style again and is getting better week by week on the hill. Will capped of a great day with a two out, bases loaded clutch hit to centrefield for 2 RBIs to really put the Saints on top.
This was a crucial win and keeps confidence levels up going into the last couple of games.

Sturt 29 defeated Norths 5
Not much to say here except we won. Shane Horne got a reasonable and much needed hitout on the mound and the game got blown out pretty early on. Good team effort.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)Sponsored by:Hattam McCarthy Reeves Mastertax

Woodville 7 defeated Sturt 4

Division 4 (Coaches: Stan Warrilow & Simon Gooley)

Woodville 9 defeated Sturt 0
The last game of the year for the boys and we copped a fired up Ian Reval in his 500th game for Woodville.
Defensively Pete Turner started off on the hill pitching to Bradley Trembath making his senior debut.
They both did a good job but after 6 digs it was time to make some changes.
Matt Mulryan came in next and soon after was replaced by Frenchy.
All the boys did a pretty good job in the field, even turning a couple of double plays but the Senators showed us why they are a top 4 side by coming up with the clutch hits when they needed them.
Offensively we were OK but we couldn’t get the clutch hit with runners in scoring position.
Frenchy, Gools and Mack smashed it all day and were unlucky to pick up more hits.
Adam Sincock batted well and was solid again in centre field.
Special mention goes to Harrison Lightbody, Bradley Trembath and Josh Tindall for showing immense application in the batters box and on the field.
Haz and Brad both picked up a hit against Rev who still throes a mean ball.
It was great to see these young blokes have a crack at senior baseball.
Even the Woodville guys were praising their efforts.

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke) Sponsored by: Ace Panel Systems (Major Sponsor) & Tony Colyer Pty Ltd (Team Sponsor)

Sturt defeated Glenelg 14-10
Reg HOME RUN, Shrek HOME RUN, yes you read it right and yes it was on a full size diamond, the two lads surprised the capacity crowd, as well as themselves, putting the ball way over the leftfield fence for their first ever home runs, both have been drug tested with the results returning high levels of Voltarin. Reg was also on fire at rightfield taking a couple of great catches. Bear pitched a great game after he warmed up somewhere into the third and Wild Thing and Daisy made some difficult ground plays to first. Spider played tunnel ball at first, blaming the rough terrain, but then made an easy play look difficult after the old legs gave way and luckily his long reach beat the runner to the base. RAT ran around in circles at left as balls belted the fence, having some difficulty with the velocity aimed at him and Smally took a nice catch or two at centre. Shrek worked hard behind the plate and AJ came into the game to take a simple match winning catch at centre. Sluga and Zulu smacked the ball hard for 3 sensational hits each while Spider walked 3 times and picked up a hit finally in the last, with everyone getting a hit for the day – except AJ. After the game we went back to Daisy’s for our debrief with some best on ground performances, none better than Southern Comfort Smally who once again got MVP and added much compost to the MacBeth’s garden Sunday morning. Thanks all for another fun filled season with lots of laughs and our regular scorer Carol was invaluable. Go the Div 5 boys, next season beckons with a hard pre season.

Hits – Shrek 2, Smally 1, Wild Thing Sluga 3, Bear 2, Spider 1, Zulu 3, Pop 1, Daisy 1, FOT 1, RAT 1, Reg 2
Battery – Bear to Shrek

Glenelg 25 defeated Sturt 3
A windy day down at the bay with many balls being hit into the Pat, Jules did a great job at his first attempt at pitching and Richie also did a solid job finishing the game on the mound. A few more field errors than we have been doing lately and not a good day with the bat all added up and we couldn't keep up the the Glenelg boys. Was a pity to see Justin Richardson injured and on the bench for the last 2 games as he has been a fantastic team player who we could not have done with out this season, I hope you continue to pitch mate - well done. Thanks to all of you this year, you have made the job of coach seem easy as you are all such a great bunch, cheers to Greg Milburn and Craig Martin for their helpful advice and support in my first crack at being coach, thanks also to Jamie Bishop and Bill Magoo for filling in when we needed their skills - how long until winter ball?? :)

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)

Glenelg 21 defeated Sturt 1 We played Glenelg for the last game of the season at home. This game was not going to change the position we finished on the ladder so we went out to have a little bit of fun. We started with Sam Hollis on the mound and after the 1st dig we were 9-0 down, Sam had fun there but was not throwing strikes and when he did they hit him and with the weather conditions and the sun in Right fields face Glenelg made the 9 runs to end the innings. We then went to Harrison Wood to stop the run flow and at the end of the 5th innings Glenelg had scored only 4 more runs to be 13 - 1 up. Jayke Wayne throw the 6th innings and only gave up one before we went to Jarrad Small for his first ever pitch to see another 7 runs score, the final being 21 - 1. On the batting side we only had two safe hits for the day from Ben Papps and the only score made for us was from Jarrad after a walk. This week we had a few of the normal boys play up in the Div 2's so we called on the U16's to help out as they had a bye this week. Thanks to Matthew Franke, Matthew MacBeth, Dakota Mitchell, Jordan Wayne and Dylan Holt for helping out. Although it was a tough game we thank them for helping out. By my calculations we will play East Torrens at home for the first final and with the Div 1's and 2's following us I will have a full side to hopefully have a win and play another final. Lets get out to Training this week boys and then enjoy our first finals game, we deserve to be in the finals and if we play to our full potential there is no reason why we are not in the grand final we have the side to do it.

Sturt 13 defeated Redsox/Dodgers 9
It was all or nothing for both teams in this match up with Dodgers/Redsox. The winner played finals and for the loser it was season over. Very strong winds and large dust clouds made conditions challenging for everyone (spectators included). They came out of the gates with 2 runs and after a leadoff walk shut us down with 3 straight strikeouts. They scored again but we replied with 3 to tie it up after 2. In the 3rd they hit the ball well and put 3 more runs up while we scored 2 to keep it close. We missed a number of plays in the field ( like not even laying a glove on it) that I felt should have been made during the course of the game and we just couldn't quite get in front. The boys need to get behind the ball , stay low and realise that footwork and glove work is a huge part of the defensive game. In the 4th inning, Redsox/Dodgers scored 3 more times to put us in a 4 run hole with 20 min. to play. To the boys credit, after the first out they rallied with 4 hits, ran the bases hard and forced them into some errors which helped us to score 8 runs, bat out the time and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Unbelievable! Alex Renton had a good day taking a great running catch in centre right along with 2 walks and a timely line drive to right in the last dig. Sam Duffield turned a low catch at short into a double play at third, Miro Van Rensburg started the last inning rally beating out an infield hit (great hustle Miro), Adrian Veljkovic batted in a run and Shea Clark had a clutch 2 run single. Henry Saundry hit an inside the park home run (with a little help from an over throw of the cutoff) but Henry's speed on the bases has to be seen to be believed! Many thanks to Matt Mulryan for umpiring and to Sandy Franke for scoring.

Sturt 3 tie with Southern District
Firstly thanks to Dean for getting this game moved to Sturt. Tough conditions today for both teams and the end score was probably justifiable. We struggled to hit SD first pitcher who throw hard and accurate and we couldn't get bat contact until the third where we finally got some runners on base and with a few hit and runs we managed 3 runs. Defensively this was one of our best game taking nearly all infield outs and keeping SD down to only one outfield shot. Both our pitchers did a great job on the mound well done Henry and JJ. Good battle today guys lets move on and get fired up for finals baseball.

Under U14/2 Sturt - (Coach: Jamie Bishop) Sponsored by: dfk Gray Perry

Sturt U14 "Sluggers" 8 went down to Southern Districts 10
Out we headed to golden Grove for the final regular round of the season – forget the Tsunami alert… I had to rope the infield together and tie them off to the fences with the wind!
Hats blew off, willi-willis caused us to lose sight of the pitcher a few times … it was ugly!
A great start though with Matt, RJ and then Fraser all hitting crisp singles before 2 strike outs and a pop up stopped us with just 2 runs in… and then RJ took the hill gave us a 3 up, 3 down.
Our 2nd at bat saw singles from Ryack and then Matt again … but failed to click the score board. They started with a hit - and then started their “auto steal” strategy – which again rattled our battery. (We have some work to do on this boys!) …4 walks and a number of passed balls and despite bringing Frasier on, in came the 7 runs. Crunch time for us – and despite 2 more hits from Fraser and Will, sloppy base running and a strike out left us scoreless again.. and they replied with another 3 runs to leave us 10 -2 down. Top of the last and we finally came together with 6 runs but it was too little too late – nice home run from Will!
The result didn’t affect our position and we finished 2nd on the table – but it did give us a wakeup call going into the finals – we have had a brilliant season with incredible improvement right across the team – and if we take our A game to the finals, we will be right up there… many thanks parents and boys – it’s been my most enjoyable and rewarding coaching season ever, and you all deserve the success you’ve had – so let’s play our best and have some fun!
Team
Fraser Crameri (3-3 again!), Reuben Bishop (2-3), Matthew Amberg (2-3), William Hill (2-3 HR), Daniel Ortiz (2 walks), Ryack Parsons (2-2), Josh McLoughney (0-3) Angus Read (0-2,1 walk), Damon Gray (0-2 -½ game), Tommy Bishop (1 walk -½ game),

Sturt 12 defeated Kensington Cardinals 9
We had a really good solid win against improving opponents in Kensington running out winners 12 to 9.
Although nowhere near our best it was certainly an improved overall performance from all the boys.
Brodie Macbeth threw a good first ½ of the game and was replaced by Stewart Brennan who threw equally as well. The bats were better with the boys steadily improving their pitch selection and continued improvement in the base running.
Zach Evreniadis showed improved form and hit a long home run while Tyson Ottaway batted and caught well.
All the other boys contributed in some way and we will certainly need to continue to improve as we come up against West Torrens next week in the first week of finals.
Again a reminder to the boys that there are probably 4 positions up for grabs in the run up to the finals so their efforts at training on Wednesday night needs to be spot on to ensure a position on game day.
Good solid effort boys.
Go the Saints!!!

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young)

Little League 2 - Sturt 12 d West Torrens 5
Battling gale force winds and a very competitive West Torrens team, the Sturt team played well both defensively and offensively to secure a 12-5 win. Jack Bennetts, Nikolai Sas and Harrison Knuckey all had great outings on the mound, pitching 3 strike-outs each to keep the West Torrens’ bats quiet. Good defensive work in the field from the entire Sturt team prevented the West Torrens runners from taking easy bases, with Nikolai taking an awesome catch and Sam Bennetts fielding courageously at third base. Offensively, Edward Allen, Mac Cross and Jack Bennets all had great hits, and offensive base-running from our runners meant that we capitalized on West Torrens’ errors in the field. A great team effort to score runs early and stay ahead all day – well done to all the boys.

Newsletter Week 18

We are now at the business end of the season! Our Division 1 and 2 sides will again play on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday Division 2 will play Glenelg at home at 2 pm followed by Division 1 at 4.30 pm. This will be a real test for our Division 1 and 2 sides as Glenelg is top in both Divisions! After two wins this weekend by Division 2 our boys are now in second spot so the clash on Saturday should be one not to be missed!! Our Division 1 side had a good showing against second on the ladder Port Adelaide on Saturday unfortunately going down 3-0, but defeated Henley and Grange on Sunday to give us one out of two wins over the weekend and putting our Division 1 side in sixth spot on percentage with Kensington and Southern Districts in fourth and fifth positions respectively!

Please make every effort to get out and support our Division 1 and 2 sides playing at home next Saturday with Division 2 commencing at 2 pm and followed by Division 1 at 4.30 pm.

After the Division 1 and 2 hit out next Saturday both teams then need to front up again on Sunday to travel out to Northern Districts!

For our Division 3-6 sides next Saturday will be their last games for the season! Thanks to all the players and coaching staff for your work through the season! It was indeed pleasing to see Division 6 get yet another win on Saturday to make it three in a row, which is great for a team that has not won a game in two seasons prior to this!

Please note that the Sturt v Glenelg Division 5 (3 pm) and Division 6 (12.30 pm) games this Saturday have been moved to Glenelg (3a) rather than being played at Flinders.

I would also like to bring to the attention of our members that the Goodwood Baseball Club ground licence is currently up for renewal for a period of 10 years (five years with the right of renewal for a further five years). Feedback from the community is required by Friday 5 March 2010. As you probably know our lease will be up in February 2011 and as such we will be going through a similar process in the middle of the year, seeking an extension on our lease, since despite our best efforts and that of the Council no suitable alternative venue for our club can be found. Go to the Mitcham Council website to read about the Goodwood Baseball Club Licence and how you can provide your comments in writing to this proposal. Any support you can offer to Goodwood would be appreciated I am sure by their Club.

Sturt 0 lost to Port 3
In what is always a tough assignment down at Port, the boys played pretty well and the score doesn't reflect how many offensive chances we created.
Rick Mitchell pitched the entire game and was tremendous. When he pitches to his strengths he is very handy.
Offensively we left 11 runners on base which was the story of the day. We just couldn't get a hit when we needed one.
Hits - Day 2, Winter, Turner

Sturt 7 defeated Henley 4
We came out of the blocks well, scoring 5 runs in the first and just when you think you have a game under control, it comes and bite you in the backside!
We then fought out a tight affair which ended with a solid but unsatisfying win. We need to play better than that during the last 4 games for us to be a chance to play in the finals.
Tom Winter brought his A game for the weekend and capped off an excellent couple of days both in the field and in the batters box, with a couple of crucial hits.
Hits - Winter 2, Young 2, Holmes 2, Carter

Sturt 11 defeated Port 2
A clinical victory over Port which was highlighted by Lewis Townsends first appearance for Sturt Division 2. After a nervous start, Lewis got into his rhythm and pitched very well. He is certainly someone to watch for the future.
Sam Hollis had his best game for the season picking up 3 hits. Another kids who continues to work very hard on the training track and fully deserves some reward for his effort.

Sturt 13 defeated Henley 0
TOM TEAGUE! That is all there is to say about this game. He threw a dominant no hitter (including 2 broken bats). This was a performance he should take a lot of confidence from after a difficult season with injury and state representation. Keep going Tom, we need you!
Offensively, Dane Adkins continues to light it up with another strong display.
This win put the B grade in second spot which has been an excellent turnaround after a slow start this season. Well done boys.

We finally played a good game against the mighty Rams but just couldn’t get over the line.
It was a tough day at the office that’s for sure.
Defensively Frenchy and Matt Mulryan did a great job on the hill keeping the Rams to 5 runs in 8 innings.
Adam Sincock, Kris McArdle and Sam Faehse did a great job in the outfield.
Offensively we started well with 2 runs in the first innings but faded for most of the game thereafter.
We had our chances late in the game but couldn’t get the clutch hit.
In the end that was the difference as the Rams didn’t falter when they had their chances.
Good luck to the boys next week for our final game of the season.
Hits – Warrilow, Gooley 2, Turner, Mulryan 1

Another excellent game in the field with very little errors, thanks to Jamie Bishop for filling in for an injured Justin Richardson on the mound - you did a great job mate. We struggled with the bat for the middle part of the game and trailed by 4 runs going into the last dig. We were 2 out when Greg Milburn hit a fantastic shot getting 2 guys home and then Chris 'Lightning' Thompson stepped up and hit an absolute blinder bringing the game to an abrupt holt and giving us another win - Well done mate!!!

Defeated East Torrens 12-0
Playing the second side having split the previous meetings by 1 run each time, we approached this game cautiously and expected a tough battle.
We came out of the blocks and scored 4 in the first to head ET early, expecting them to come back at us. An exceptional game by Matt on the mound and Brad calling the right pitches behind the plate kept ET at bay. 19 ET batters faced Matt for the game with only 4 getting on base, backing him up in the field were Macca, who threw out a runner from deep in the shortstop hole and Jess with a great catch at centre and Hazz with a regulation catch at right.
Offensively, after our good start we struggled in the mid frames, however, the last innings saw the bats come alight with a huge double by Matt and then the highlight of back to back home runs from Macca and D with Vicki invading the diamond to celebrate D’s long hit with the team. The stats show the story with 37 of our batters picking up 10 hits and 13 walks. A very satisfying day at the office for the team and the coach sighed a huge sigh of relief. Thanks to Tinny and Lazar for coming back to sit on our bench, both getting a run at the end.
A bye next week while we sit out the end results for the finals looming.

Sturt 8 defeated Port 6 It never ceases to amaze me how much can change in a week. From the ignominy of losing to the bottom side last week, this week we dealt the top side their 1st loss of the season! We began the game with 2 runs but gave up 3 in the 2nd. This just seemed to fire up the boys as they came out hitting the ball hard in the 3rd and Port were rattled as we piled on 6 runs. The final 2 innings were tense as port scored 3 more times but the damage was done and the boys took a deserved win. I've been told that even the Port parents gave our boys a round of applause (unheard of out there!) but is proof of how well they played and the spirit they showed. Shaun Wright threw 4 innings for 7 strikeouts and only 2 walks (great work Shaun), Josh Tindall threw the pressure packed final innings and picked up 2 nice hits to centre, Henry Saundry Worked hard behind the plate threw out a runner at 2nd and had a hit and Shea Clark cracked a ringing double over left fields head. Lewis Brideson continued his good run with 2 hits and Sam Duffield had a hit as well as making a terrific sliding stop to throw out the batter in the final dig. They showed up to play today and hopefully they can bring that attitude to next weeks equally crucial game.

Well done boys we played a complete game and didn't switch off or lower our standard to the oppositions. Congratulations to Tyler Lunnon, Errol Burns both bombing the ball over the fence for a home run and double congrats to Tlyer Horrigan putting 2 balls over the fence getting himself two homers for the day. All 4 home runs where line drives and none of the boys really tried for them they just hit the ball hard and kept their shoulders flat. Hitting the ball hard was the flavour of the day with all player picking up multiple hit giving us 20+ save hits for the day. The pitchers work hard this week and our strike percentage did increase from last week but we still need to work hard in this area. We made some good plays in the field but weren't really tested. We need to remember to maintain our intensity in the field to beat the top side. Good work boys I really enjoyed this one; but don't get to far in front of our self next week a fire up SD will be waiting for us and we need to bring our A grade game. Seeya Tuesday.

I say it every time… and I will say it again – THANKYOU Bruce Packer – beautiful ground, immaculately prepared! And once again Bill Magoulianos many thanks for plate umpiring – it makes a big difference! (Special mention Tyson’s dad Craig Ottoway who helped set up the field and then base umpired for us!)
A full team and 2 reserves! With 3 on the injury/recovery list it was great to have Tyson (thankyou!) as well as our regular 10 squad – and all played well today with an opportunity to mix the field up well.
RJ started on the mound and gave us 2 reasonable innings with just 2 runs in. The hard-throwing Fraser was unlucky not start with a strike out– his 3rd strike on the first batter missed the bat, the catcher’s glove, the (not insignificant) umpire … and ricocheted off the back net and ½ way up the 1st base line! Runner made it to first! He pushed on and eventually did strike out one and take a sensational pitcher’s catch to stop them after 3 runs in. Tommy came onto close – (for the first time I didn’t bring him on with runners on the bases!) – he did just as well and 4 up 3 down with no score in.
Meanwhile – our bats were solid! I asked them to hit early and hard – we weren’t here to walk today – and they did! 15 safe hits (see summary below) with heads up base running… our most comprehensive victory to date I think – good time to fire with 1 game before the finals. Thanks for scoring Andy "Mr versatile" Amberg!

Sturt 13 defeated Adelaide Angels 5
We had a good win against good opponents in Adelaide running out comfortable winners 13 to 5.
Again we started the game in good fashion with the maximum 5 runs in the first innings, 3 in the second, 4 in the third and only 1 in the fourth while holding the Angels outfit to 5 through the 4 innings.
While nowhere near their best Mitchell Lightbody and Zach Evreniadis showed improved form and composure on the mound while Henry Wood did another great job behind the mask and is quickly developing into the best catcher in the competition.
Unfortunately our pitchers gave up 12 walks to the 23 batters that faced during the game! This statistic alone would suggest that the pitchers have a huge amount of work to do between now and the finals. Again there was improvement in several areas including the use of the "on deck" hitting area and pitch selection.
Several very good hitting efforts again particularly from Henry Wood 3 from 4, Stewart Brennan 2 from 3, Simon Adkins 2 from 3.
The only way to improve is to practice so I would encourage the boys to use any time and resources they have at home to hone their skills in the run up to the finals.
A reminder to the boys that 4 of the positions are up for grabs in the run up to the finals so their efforts at training and on game days needs to be lifted to ensure a position on game day.
Good solid effort boys.
Go the Saints!!!

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young)

Sturt 13 defeated Southern Districts 8
After a very slow match culminating in a draw last week we were looking for some more exciting baseball and a better result this week. With a strong team on the park we headed "to the deep south" to take on Southern Districts. We started strongly with solid hits to Nikolai, Jamie (out to a good play from the short stop), Cameron Corey and Will. The wheels then fell off a little with us restricted to 2 runs after a couple of K2's in a row. Having started with the bat we also had Nik starting us on the mound. 20 pitches for 14 strikes saw the South boys back in the field but only after levelling the score at 2-2.
Good hits by Jack (double), Jamie and Cam along with 7 walks! saw us get the maximum five at the top of the second to take us to 7 runs. Harrison started slowly on the mound but showed his strength of character to come back from an attempt to knock out the opposition (three HBP) rather than strike them out to retire the team single handedly - two K's and a good "caught and bowled". In our third bat we saw solid hitting by Jamie D, Cam and Jack but equally good fielding saw us only add the single run for the third innings.
Jack then had one of those days on the mound where the strikes just wouldn't add up to three and the opposition stole back 5 to see it 8-8 at the bottom of the third. Some erratic pitching, some good watching from our boys and Jacks third hit for the day combined to see us score another 5. Now to hold them! We put our secret weapon on the mound to close the game. Jamie D once again bamboozled them with his pitching assisted by a brilliant outfield catch by Nik to finish the game without the opposition registering any more to their score. Who says outfield doesn't win games.
Another good performance by the team, we still need to work on our relay plays and knowing the play ahead of the pitch but overall we are seeing good development of skills and confidence.
Hits Jack 3, Nik 1, Cam 1, Jamie D 1, Corey 1,

West Torrens 10 Defeated Sturt 9
We got off to a slow start, with the opposition scoring 5 to zip in the first innings. We battled away with a solid pitching performance form Arti Dow keeping them to just one run. We were still yet to score and it look like it was to be a long day. In the third we came to life and scored the maximum five runs, and a further four in the last this was encouraging to see the guys perservere.
Next week will we be switched on from the first pitch!

Newsletter Week 17

Yet another big weekend of baseball! This time the Saints Gala Day took centre place with an excellent crowd coming to our home ground to watch the Division 1 and 2 teams play. The Saints Gala Day is becoming an institution at our club led by the fantastic commentary of Peter Gee this time abely assisted by Bruce Packer. The commentary and music add another dimension of professionalism to the game!

The Saints Gala Day is also an opportunity for the club to thank our sponsors which assist us greatly in being able to be financially viable. I had the opportunity to speak and thank each of our sponsors yesterday, but I would also like to publically acknowledge them in this Newsletter and remind our members to visit the Sponsors section of our website for details on all of our sponsors. Please make every effort to support our sponsors whenever you need services that they provide.

Events such as the Saints Gala Day do not simply "happen" and I would like to thank our Senior Committee for their assistance in organising the day.

A huge thank you to Bruce Packer who put in a herculian effort commencing at 8.00 am with ground set up and working through to 9.30 with clean up etc. Bruce- we salute you for your outstanding dedication to our club! I would also like to thank Nobby for his work and once again a big thank you to Peter Gee for his commentary work which was assisted by Bruce.
Thanks also to Vicki Mitchell who kindly volunteered to run the BBQ for the entire day- both for the Division 1 and 2 games- thank you Vicki!

On the Gala Day we had mixed results with our Division 1 side unfortunately going down to Souths but still maintaining fifth spot on the Premiership Ladder. The Division 2 side had a great win putting them fourth on the Premiership Ladder.

Please remember that this weekend our Division 1 and 2 sides will be playing on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday Division 2 is playing at 2.00 pm at Port Adelaide followed by Division 1 playing at 4.30 pm, then on Sunday we will be back to the usual schedule with Division 2 playing at 12.30 and Division 1 playing at 3.00 pm at home.

It is also great to see the success of our Junior teams with all but one team in the top four and with the Under 16/2 Sturt side still very close in fifth position!

A disappointing outcome in front of an excellent crowd.
Unfortunately we gave them too many runs and a side like Souths will make you pay. Offensively we are not executing with runners in scoring position well enough and consequently our run production all season has been poor.
We have 6 games left and some massive challenges ahead of us. We have been up to it all season and the belief is there - just keep fighting.

7 - 4 win and that makes it 3 wins from 4 games over the last month.
We packed the overnight bags and headed down south, just before you hit water you come across Southern Districts and on a fantastic afternoon to play baseball we were ready to go. At the end of the first innings we had 2 runs on the board and then had SD 3 up 3 down and we were looking good. Again what can you say about the Bear that we do not say every week, 7 innings played 7 innings pitched, 111 pitches 77 strikes and 34 balls 6 k's and 1 BB. This week the field backed him up and SD only scored in the 2nd and 5th innings while we scored in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 6th. Every body hit the ball and a special mention must go to FOT (Father of Tom) 5 @ Bats 7 balls faced 5 outs, here is on bloke that does not like to hang around in the batters box, I am sure with one of those at bats he padded up. Another special mention must go to our number one supporter Ron MacBeth every now and then you would hear this little voice from under the shade of the tree, Don't swing at the high stuff, you can run faster than that, obviously he has not been watching us much this year, even though he has nearly been at all our games.

The game we could have won, but 2 weeks ago we had not won a game in 2 years so we are still doing well fellas! An almost error free game and some fantastic batting by all, well done Nick, Richie, Ben, Greg M, Jules, Justin Rans, Justin Rich, Chris, Greg B and me! Cheers to Dave Carter for umpiring for us, it's appreciated. Ditmar helped out the Div4 boys down the bay, be good to see you back next week. Practice is still on until the last game so head down, we start at 5:30 each Wednesday - see you there!

Woodville 4 drew with Sturt 4
We traveled down to Woodville with the bare nine and a game if we had won would have put us third on the ladder. We were leading all game from the first innings, but Woodville were able to tie it up with their last at bat and the final score was 4-4. This was a marked improvement from our last encounter when the score line was 11-0. The boys as always looking half asleep during the warm up but when game starts they some how wake up and play some good baseball. Lewis Townsend again started on the mound for us and did a fantastic job holding them to one run over 6 innings throwing 105 pitches 67 strikes, 38 balls, 12 K's, 3 BB and only 3 safe hits. Harrison Wood came in for the last and threw 26 pitches for 17 strikes, 9 balls 1K, 1BB and 2 hits. Our biggest problem for the day was leaving runners on the bases, even though we did not get a lot of hits the boys were patient in the box for a total of 6 walks and we only had 5 K's for the day. Sean Lamonby had a great tag at home from a Sam Hollis throw on the money to get the run out going to home to keep us in front at 4-2 and five minutes before the end of the game, but we had to go one more unfortunately. We were probable hard done by with the tying run stealing third and not been give out on a great throw from Sean Lamonby for Ben Papps to make the tag. It is not easy for the umpire to see the tag from the middle of the diamond and to the boys credit they finished the game off getting the required 2 outs, but Woodville had scored their 4th to end on a draw.

Defeated Kensington 10-4
Dylan Holt had an exceptional game both pitching (throwing 68 pitches for 42 strikes) and hitting (2 strong hits) and everyone else in the side contributed in some way. It was a tight struggle for the first 4 innings until a purple patch saw us score 7 in the 5th, once again our hit and runs put pressure on the opposition and we batted runners around with good solid hits. The field had little to do until the 6 th innings and unfortunately when challenged we dropped our concentration and threw the ball around unnecessarily allowing our opposition some easy runs, something to work on, as well as our lack of determination sometimes on the bases. However, all round it was a good team effort.

Sturt 11 lost to Goodwood 15
We had a Fairly good day offensively today collecting 7 hits, 10 walks & 11 runs. Our problems were base running and relief pitching. A number of boys seem to be unsure about moving more and getting a good jump. We missed 2 or 3 runs on pass balls with runners at third. Henry Saundry showed how it was done though scoring from 2nd on a pass ball! Spectacular Henry. He also had a hit and did a fine job catching the whole game. Josh Tindall gave us a good start and came out after 3 innings with a 2 run lead. The final innings didn't go to plan however and 9 runs later we were staring at a 7 run deficit. We did rally for 3 of them but some inexperience on the bases caught us out. Shaun Wright had a hit to go with 3 walks, Sam Duffield had a good day with the bat picking up 2 hits, Lazar Losic had a double and was unlucky not to have another when he smashed one that went straight down the right fielders throat. Alex Renton lined a nice shot to centre right and Lewis Brideson singled to centre to build a three game hitting streak.

Sturt 12 V Kensington 13
Great start getting the maximum 7 runs in the first dig but we again struggled to throw strikes and gave back 4 runs. Jayden Trembath pitched very well for his three digs and we held a healthy lead going into the last dig 12-6 up. Unfortunately we gave Kensies 7 walks , one hit batter and a few errors and they scored the maximum 7 runs to beat us. Great hitting by all as we picked up 10 hits for the day and special mention to Errrol Burns, Jayden Trembath and Sam Cavanagh all getting two hits for the day, we held Kensington to only 2 hits for the day but we can't expect to win with three errors and 16 walks for the day. See you all on the track ready to work hard and prepare for next week.

Sturt U14 "Sluggers" 6 drew West Torrens 6
The great thing about having only 10 in a squad is that everyone gets to play almost all of the time with little bench time – but the downside is that when injury/sickness hits it puts the pressure on!
Poor old Josh was just recovering from his double broken arm incident pre-Xmas when his appendix gave up on him this week and he’s out for 2 weeks after surgery! With Awesome Angus away on a pre-planned trip I was down to 8… and despite my “instructions” at Thursday practise to look after yourselves… Mighty Matt lost an argument with a gate and sliced his hand up! Thanks to Kris Mc we secured Zac Lunnon from U14-1’s… and then Braydon Richardson from U12-1’s and we had 9 take the field. Thanks to them and coaches and parents for making that happen.
We were up against 3rd placed West Torrens who spanked us last time… and a loss would see us slip from 2nd spot. We played well and hard – and tried not to let the “creative umpiring” distract us! Our usually strong batting didn’t fire for the 1st 2 innings which put pressure on our defensive game.. RJ stood up well in the 1st innings but got into trouble in the 2nd, so I went to Zac Lunnon with good effect to hold them – but at the end of 2 it was 4-0 down. We then came back with 2 runs in the 3rd and Zach and a solid defense held them scoreless in the 3rd and 4th innings, whilst we went on to grab another run in the 4th … and then 3 more in the top of the 4th to put us 6 -4 up at the top of the 5th….Showdown time!
Zach tried his hardest, but they began to get onto him and with a couple of past balls they grabbed 2 runs to level. So with runners at 2nd and 3rd I again dropped Too-tuff Tommy into the pressure cooker with 1 down… and he calmly struck out the 2nd out and coaxed a soft fly to 1st to stop them at 6 all! (we might have to rename him the ice man!)
Particular mentions – Braydon from U12-s very solid hit to left field was robbed by an astounding catch – Damon’s solid crack in the last to bring in 2 ribbies… and Wiley Will’s power throw from deep left field to home to stop them scoring! Solid effort through 3 digs from Zach - many thanks!
Team
Reuben Bishop (3-3 hits), Fraser Crameri (2-3,1 dbl), Tommy Bishop (1-3), Damon Gray (1 from 2), Daniel Ortiz (1 -3), Ryack Parsons (1-3), William Hill (1 walk), Braydon Richardson (1 walk) Zac Lunnon (1 walk) Matthew Amberg, Josh McLoughney, Angus Read (away)
Feeling confident we can “rattle their cage” next outing! - 10 am home game next Sunday for those who’d like to see a good game against the Hawks – with Big Bill Magoo umpiring – thanks Bill!)
Thanks to all for their support and efforts – and congratulations to all on the sponsors day at the club!

Game 14 Sturt 13 defeated Goodwood Indians 10
We had a solid win on Sunday against a very improved Indian outfit.
After we started the game in good fashion with 2 runs in the first innings Goodwood replied immediately with the maximum 5 runs. We replied with the maximum 5 before Goodwood scored 4 in the bottom of the second to lead 9 to 7. After that stage our pitching improved dramatically and we began to bunch our hits to run out winners 13 to 10.
Our pitchers gave up 11 walks to the 31 batters that faced during the game! Mr. Mac has got a lot of work to do with the pitching staff to get us ready for the run up to the finals based on the last 2 weeks.
We did improve in several areas including base running, hitting and use of the "on deck" hitting area. We did let ourselves down by not scoring on past balls but we can work on that at practice by ensuring we stay athletic, stay focused and are aggressive in our base running. There is a big difference between aggressive and stupid by the way!
Several very good hitting efforts particularly from Stewart Brennan 4 from 4 Simon Adkins 3 from 4 and Jack Dawson, Braydon Richardson and Peter Littleyuile with 2 safe hits each.
I think that most of our opposition teams have improved a lot during the season while we seem to have stalled recently. The only way to improve is to practice (which can be difficult with this hot weather and the heat policy) so I would encourage the boys to use any time and resources they have at home to hone their skills in the run up to the finals.
A reminder to the boys that most of the positions are up for grabs in the run up to the finals so their efforts at training and on game days needs to be lifted to ensure a position on game day.
Good solid effort boys.
Go the Saints!!!

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young)

Sturt 8 drew with Hawks 8
I wouldn't say that this was the most exciting game we have played despite a come from behind draw! It was interesting to see how both teams had improved since the start of the season. As home team Cameron started us off and threw as well as I've seen him throw this season. Some good hits and two walks allowed them the 5 runs however. We probably needed to take a few chances in the field to keep the opposition honest. A good two strike hit from Sam got our batting off to a start. 40mins later and only one more it from Jack saw the score 5 all!
Jack threw our second innings and as usual threw some real heat. I think the 2 hours sleep the night before caused a little difficulty in concentration but fortunately didn't throw him off his game too much. We also learnt our lessons about getting the ball in quickly from the outfield with us giving the opposition some help to get to home. 8-5 down and 10mins to play we need to score some runs. Hits to Harrison and Jamie L along with walks to Edward, Jamie D and Cameron put us in the position to win. Jack then gave us a hit to centre field and aggressive base running allowed three runs in to tie the game. Two innings in 90 mins is not exactly fast moving baseball but a good solid performance from our team with some ideas about things we can work on for the coach.

Sturt 16 defeated Kensington 8
It was very pleasing to get back in the winners circle after drawing the last two , with a great team effort.
We got off to a great start with four runs in the first with hits to Ethan, Arno, and Arty. Kensington came back with Three runs of there own, Ethan Egglestone pitched, He got off to a slow start walking four batters, but came back strong with three strikeouts! In the second the bats continued to bring the runs in, scoring the max. five runs.with hits to Ethan, Arno, Matthew and Yannik. Arty Dow pitched the second for us doing very well keeping them to just the two runs. In the third we scored a further three runs with Eli, Nick and Ethan all hitting the ball well. Connor Mc Clure took the ball, who has been a bit of a surprise packet for us giving up no runs, and seems to be enjoying his baseball. In the fourth we added another four runs, with hits to Yannik and a great hit from Nick. Matthew Johnston finished off giving up three runs in a patchy display, but knuckled down to get the third out!
Good effort Guys keep up the good work in the batters box, and the pitchers need to practice hard at training to focus on that catchers glove!
Special thanks to Connor Mclure and Carlin Stutley who played half games, and Eli Egglestone who caught all game, and to Brett Egglestone and Nicks Dad who both helped on the day!

Newsletter Week 16

Another big weekend of baseball, with the Claxton Shield Grand Final in Melbourne. Unfortunately as I already advised South Australia went down 2-0 in the best of three games at LaTrobe University in Melbourne. Congratulations to the South Australian team as it was an outstanding effort to reach the Grand Final play off.

Please remember to check the website for changes to some senior games on Saturday 13 February and Saturday 27 February due to scheduling changes required due to the Claxton Shield.

On the home front we had some very good results, but the highlight would have to be our Division 6 side under the leadership of Dave Smith ended up with their first win in two seasons on Saturday! Well done to Dave and the boys! Division 3 also had a great nail biting victory winning 4-3 against Golden Grove. Division 4 also had a similar close win against Adelaide 7-6. On Sunday our fifth placed Division 2 side had a great win over second on the ladder West Torrens, 9-6

I would like to remind you that the Sturt Baseball Club will hold its Gala Day on this coming Sunday 14 th February 2010, commencing at 3.00 pm for the Division 1 clash between Sturt and Southern Districts. Once again we have secured the services of Peter Gee to head up our commentary team. We have received terrific feedback about past Gala Days so please make every effort to attend. We have extended a special invite to all of our generous sponsors to be our guests on the day to thank them for the outstanding contribution they have made to the club over this season.

Last October the Sturt Tee Ball club was selected from Channel 10 to be a part of the T.V show TOTALLY WILD. A hand full of kids were chosen to be a part of the filming and I'm so excited to inform you all that are segment will be on Channel 10 at 7.30am, Feb 12th. This was fantastic publicity for the Sturt TeeBall Club, as they were chosen Australia wide for this opportunity. I understand that components were filmed at the Sturt Baseball Club so tune in next Friday morning!

A special thanks to Mal Watts who has been good enough to give Garry Wood's Under 12 Major League team some Brooks training shirts.

West Torrens 19 defeated Sturt 2
Beaten by a better side on the day. That is how you can best sum up the game. The West Torrens hitters could not miss a thing which made for a long day.
Offensively, Daniel Lee had another good day to continue his excellent form of late but he was a lone ranger and we never got much going with the bats.
The main message from the day is for the boys to continue believing in themselves and concentrate on the next challenge. Souths at home this week. Come to play!
Hits - Lee 2, Turner, Frogley

Sturt 9 defeated West Torrens 6
A gutsy performance from the group who need a scalp like West Torrens to help them believe they can mix it with the leaders in the competition.
Rick Mitchell pitched well through 5 innings after a scratchy start but made the necessary adjustments and fought back well. This is a sign of a mature baseballer.
It was very pleasing to see everyone contribute with the bat. Particularly Michael Robinson who had some excellent at bats on the day. A major positive were the hitters being more selfless in their at bats and hitting for the team outcome. This needs to continue.

Sturt 4 defeated Golden Grove 3
An outstanding win by the boys! Dylan Holt pichted four sensational innings keeping Golden Grove scoreless! Nick Tuffnel came on and shut things down for an innings. After leading 1-0 all day Golden Grove hit back with three runs in the last! However to the boys credit we came back from behind to win our third game in a row!
Hits: Harris 2, Mattschos 2, McGuiness 1, Martens winning RBI hit

Sturt 7 defeated Adelaide 6
Farewell Takashi!!
What a finish;
The Saints are down 6-5 in the bottom of the 7th, 2 out with loaded bases and Takashi Yokoyama at the plate for the last time in a Sturt uniform.
Here’s the pitch, he swings, and it’s a base hit to right field. Gools scores easily from third, here comes Matt Mulryan, here comes the throw but it’s not in time.
2 runs score and the Saints win 7-6.
Folks I tell you this, you could not have scripted it any better.
On behalf of the Division 4 side and the Sturt Baseball Club I would like to thank T.K. for his outstanding effort and performance over the last 4 seasons with us.
We all wish him and his family the very best for the future back in his homeland.
Defensively Matt Saint was fantastic on the hill for 7 digs.
Kris Mcardle took a game saving catch in the last innings to keep us in it and Adam Sincock was solid at Centre field.
Frenchy and Gools smashed it all day and we kept the pressure on the Adelaide defence for most of the game.
It was good to get one back against those guys, we owed them one for last season.
My apologies to Rick and the Div. 3 boys for not preparing the diamond for you after our game.
I guess we all got caught up in the moment.
A special big thanks to the SABL for giving us 24 hours to come up with an umpire. Yours truly ended up doing it and it was actually quite enjoyable.
HITS – we got 12 of them

Gawler 9 defeated Sturt 3
We arrived at the Flinders dustbowl with high hopes of another victory, however Gawler had other ideas and we went down 3-9. The Bear threw another great game, ably supported by the Professor behind the plate and albeit a brain fade 3rd innings where the opposition scored 6, we were right in this. Unfortunately our bats didn’t rattle as they should and we were a little timid and shy when it came to the hitting thing, although the Rangers fielders did seem to have an attraction to our balls as we seemed to find their gloves quite regularly and easily. They, however managed to evade any glove we threw at them, popping those dinky little fly balls just over the infield and just short of the outfield. Zulu attracted some sort of attention by having a hand in the last 3 outs from Wild Thing much to his mirth and merriment, not shared by the other caring and sharing members of the fraternity. FOT continued on his hitting phenomenon as did Smally and the Bear and Doc just had one of those days with the bat, you know the ones, too much red wine on a Fri night, squiggly lines etc. Pop hit well again without luck and Daisy came into the game with a double filling FOT’s spot, must be an omen, RegeeeLee hit hard without success as did Zulu into the clutches of the dreaded Centrefield chasm. Thanks to all that showed up this week and Rocket for a grand umpiring exhibition. RAT (shaggers back), Shrek (off with the pixies) and Rowdy (unknown whereabouts) to return. Pres is running out of games for a guest appearance – I understand a pink tutu beckons !
Footnote – the batting line up went – a Bear and a Spider with a Slug, followed by a Zulu – I wonder if National Geographic would sponsor us ???
Hits – FOT 2, Daisy 1, Smally 2 (yes, no misprint), Bear 3, Wild Thing 1, Pop 1
Battery – Bear to Doc

Sturt 14 defeated Gawler 8
WE WON!!!!!!!! Well it's been a long time comming and we have certainly earnt it! An excellent day in the field with very few errors, Justin Richardson pitched really well for the whole game and Greg Milburn did a great job as always catching. We also did a great job with the bat with runs scored every dig. It was fantastic to be part of such a great game - Well done guys!!! Big thanks to Bill Magoulianos and Renaissance Limousines for the bus transport for many of the team members on the day, and Richie Carter for driving us home (with a bunch of rather "refreshed" players in the back) - Good fun....

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)

We played at Adelaide this week and this was a game we needed to win after last weeks draw, I needed to have the boys ready to go from the first pitch to the last and thankfully they were. We started of with 5 runs in the first innings with some great batting, six safe hits for the innings. Harrison Wood started on the mound and threw strikes unfortunately they got a couple through the infield and we had an error which allowed them to score three for the innings but after that we held them scoreless for the rest of the game, finally winning 7-3. We hit the ball well for the day collecting 14 safe hit while Adelaide only had 5. Harrison threw 3 innings for 58 pitches, 37 strikes and 21 balls, 2 k's and 0 walks. Lewis Townsend then came in to finish with 4 innings pitched, 51 pitches, 31 strikes, 20 balls, 5 K's, 2 walks. The difference for the day was our offence but we did struggle with the left hand pitcher picking off and some missed signals. As always the boys enjoyed themselves and had some good laughs with each other through out the game. Thanks to all the parents that turned up to watch and ferry some of the kids around after the game. It is nice to see a good crowd for these boys.

Safe hits: Hollis 2, MacBeth 3 (1 triple), Townsend 2, Lunnon 1, Lamonby 3 (1 double), Papps 1, Wood 1 double, Mitchell 1 and Brennan 1 triple

Sturt 11 defeated Golden Grove 8
With the lads playing 2nd placed GGCD and us sitting 4th, I thought a little reverse psychology might work with the onus of the warm up and preliminaries put on the shoulders of the team to relax a little and enjoy themselves, rather than stir the boys up and put too much pressure on them to perform. I must say I was impressed with their application and leadership of Macca to achieve this prior to the game and we came out early looking good defensively. Matt was throwing well and Macca threw out 2 stealing runners with some sensational throws to second. With the 1st and 3rd innings easily accounted for the 2nd and 4th innings saw a fielding implosion where we had simple plays and throws that just didn’t add up. Matt and Macca teamed well as a battery but the field just weren’t backing them up. Dakota then came in to relieve and a similar scenario followed with Sam finishing off the game in the last extremely well. Defensively a terrible game but with a highlight being Jess’s follow up throw from the outfield to get a runner trying for an extra base at second. That being said, offensively we stuck to the task working hit and runs perfectly and the majority of our hitting being pitch perfect, with all signals sighted and executed with precision. The absolute highlight being our last innings being 6-8 down and Jack starting us off with a hard run E6, a Dakota triple and then a Macca inside the park home run to put us in front, after that the horse had bolted. A fantastic come from behind victory that everyone contributed to and more pleasing that we didn’t throw away the chewy and fought out a win we needed to get closer to a home final. Fielding aside, a great effort.
Thanks to Norm for umpiring.

Gawler 11 defeated Sturt 6
Sundays game was against 2nd placed Gawler Ranges and a chance to strengthen our finals hopes. They only had 8 players so Alex Renton who was starting on the bench played a full game for Gawler. Thank you Alex.
We found ourselves 6 nil down after 2 innings but the boys turned the momentum and tied it up at 6 all after 4. Sadly in the final innings, easy stolen bases and a series of throws from the catcher to third base that were mishandled cost us dearly. The boys need to learn to commit to each and every play. Make sure of the ball first whether catching, fielding or blocking it and be hungry to make the play. Miro Van Rensburg had 2 hits and did some good work in left field backing up third. Shaun Wright in his first start pitched 4 innings and had 2 hits. Adrian Veljkovic took a nice pop up catch at 2nd base, Shea Clark had a hit and worked hard behind the plate and Lewis Brideson pitched bravely and also picked up a hit.

Sturt 9 defeated Golden Grove 8
This weeks game was a real nail bitter, GG started well and put on 2 runs in their first at bat. We replied with 4 runs to take the lead 4-2. Henry Brennan continued to work hard holding GG in the second. We continued to be aggressive in the batters box and with our base running and put on another two runs making the score 6-2 after 2 digs. Tyler lunnon took to the mound and unfortunately gave up 3 runs due to a homer hit by GG but Tyler can hold his head high as he knuckled down to get us out of the dig. We didn't score in the 3rd with GG closing out this dig with Double play score line now 6-5. Tyler Horrigan jumped on the mound and held GG in the top 4 and we replied with 2 more runs score now 8-5. GG came out in the 5th ready to have a crack and we made a few defensive errors, GG scored 3 runs to tie up the ball game. We needed 1 run to get the win and also take 2nd spot on the ladder, the challenge was set. Brett Colmer was up first and line drive the ball hard to the left fielder who took a good catch, one out , Tyler Lunnon got on safely with a single, Jordan McArdle got hit by the pitcher and we had runners on 2nd and first with one out. Errol Burns advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd with a shot to the 2nd baseman. We now had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 out. Charlie Goldsworthy came up to bat and got deep into his count and then hit the ball between 2nd and 1st to score the winning run. The boys then hunted Charlie down on the first baseline and jumped on top of him showing that we have excellent team spirit within the side. Boys great win lets keep a lid on it and work hard at training increasing our intensity every week.

Sturt U14 "Sluggers" 16 defeated Henley & Grange 9
Another scenic tour for the U14 Sluggers.. this time to Henley & Grange. Led off by Wiley Will’s safe hit, we came out swinging with hits and walks pretty much down thru the line up – & Will finished with another safe hit to start with a 7 run mercy! RJ then took to the mound for us, and apart from hitting the 1st batter, went on to strike out the next 2, walk another and then handled the 3rd out himself.. with 1 run in.
Second innings and the boys took up- right where they left off –they took walks when offered, and hit crisp safe hits and ran the bases well …for another 7 run mercy.
With well over half of the game gone & 14-1 up, it was time to switch pitchers and positions to give everyone some game time – Mighty Matt took to the mound and worked hard to find the zone – but could not get that elusive 3trd strike – but to his credit did not give up! He did strike one out, but they did sneak in the mercy 7. Third innings saw a speedier pitcher and my encouragement to try and get hits if possible saw some quick outs ….. but not before Dan cracked a lovely double to centrefield and brought in 2 more runs.
Bottom of the 3rd, we gave "Fraser the fierce" the ball, but he too had location issues and walked the bases loaded for none out… So why not? Let’s drop Tommy "too-tuff" (one of our U12 lads) for a 1st time baptism of fire on the mound for the season! 1st pitch? Routine out at 1st. Struck out the next batter in 4 pitches… and then the final batter in 5 pitches! "How was that coach?" "That’ll do Tom, that’ll do!"
Great finish, strong game, and our best performance of "Oh When the Saints" so far! Thanks Andy for stepping into scoring and all the parents for getting them there and doing their jobs!

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Garry Wood)Sponsored by: TNY Management Consultants

Sturt 2 were defeated by West Torrens 8
After a great start to 2010 we came crashing back to earth against the quality WT outfit.
After Sturt went to an early lead to be 2 to 1 up after the first 3 innings WT hit back to score the maximum 5 to open up what turned out to be a match winning lead.
It is very interesting that last week I was able to report on how well the boys had hit and what a great team effort it had been. Unfortunately this week is the complete opposite as we posted only a couple of safe hits and had too few contributors!
We had (in my humble opinion) 2 absolutely outstanding players, a couple of solid contributors and not enough from the other players. Brodie Macbeth pitched very well through the first 3 innings and hit very strongly while Henry Wood caught one of the best games I have seen by a catcher at this level and he added to his performance by laying down the perfect advance bunt!
Unfortunately we had little else to be excited about and there is no doubt that if this team is to be successful through the rest of the season that we need to be far more consistent with a team contribution from all 12 squad players.
If fairness to the other boys we made reasonable contact on occasions and were solid in the field recording only a couple of "minor" blemishes.
I think the boys will now realise the level of concentration and commitment required to compete with these better teams particularly as we approach the 7 innings finals games!
Key points
1) Not enough vocal support for team mates
2) No use of the on deck batters area to actually get a feel for the pitcher and swing the bat
3) "Mother's meetings" (or boy meetings) aren't to be had during the game on the bench
4) Terrible pitch selection when batting
5) Not enough hussle on and off the field
So at practice this week we will work on pitch selection when hitting and outfield plays when fielding.
This was probably a good wake up call for the boys so let's have a good session on Wednesday as we look forward to next week against Goodwood.
Go the Saints!!!
PS Sorry for sounding so grumpy but I know the level these boys can play at and we didn't see it yesterday!!

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young)

Glenelg 10 defeated Sturt 8
This week we had our second match up against Glenelg and were keen for a revenge win. Despite the heat and a middle of the day game the boys were focussed and enthusiastic. Harrison started a little slowly on the mound with a couple of walks but then fired up to retire the next three batters (two KC and a K2) and held them scoreless. Edward then got on base with a solid double and was brought home by Harrison to get us on the board and 1 run up at the bottom of the first. Corey was next to the mound and pitched solidly although some aggressive hitting and a few errors allowed the Glenelg boys to get their 5 runs - sometimes the hits just fall between fielders! Our second bat saw hits to Corey and Cam but we could only translate this to a single run. Jamie D showed us how consistent he has become on the mound for our third defensive outing - a good play by Nik and Mac at second, an excellent throw by Harrison to Will to get the second out at third and a put out at first to Edward only allowed them two runs. Some erratic pitching, a good hit by Nikolai and good base running saw us get three runs in the bottom of the third. Nikolai finished the pitching duties for us and mixed them up and managed two K2's and a nice pick up and throw to Corey to complete the innings - Glenelg with three more on the board. 10-5 down with our bat to come, a draw possible. Against their fastest pitcher we gave it a good go. Hits by Harrison, Jamie, Nik and Corey put the pressure on the field but we came up 2 runs short, 10-8 down at the end of the day. A great effort against the top team with only one innings the difference.

Sturt 8 - Glenelg 10. Hits Sas 2, Knuckey 1, Allen 1, Last 1, Tucker 1

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Darren French) Sponsored by: Brownhill Creek Tourist Park

Two Draws in as many weeks...
This week we travelled to Southern Districts to play Southern Districts and it was a tight game. We had some very good plays, but also made some basic errors. I was surprised by the number of players who did not (or do not) understand why we tag up on fly balls. This is something that we need to talk about and practice.
We battered first and scored two runs. We had 3 batters walked, one safe hit, two batters put out at first and one K2'd. Matthew Johnston pitched our first dig and was not there today. He struggled to find the zone and gave up the maximum 5 runs.
We needed to pick up our batting and fielding to stay in the game. Our next at bat saw the boys score two more runs (only safe hit to Gavin Barrett). Arti Dow stepped up to the mound and threw well giving up 0 runs. He K2'd the first batter then walked the second before having the third caught by Isaac Dangerfield at right field, who celebrated for a short while before throwing to first to get the double play.
Our third at bat saw us move the score along. 5 walks and two safe hits saw the boys score the maximum. Carlin Stutley threw our third dig and did an excellent job. He threw strikes which made Southern Districts swing the bat which caught a few of our guys napping. He got out of the innings with an excellent catch by Thomas O'Connell behind the plate (striking out 2 and walking two and giving up two hits).
So after 3 digs scores are tied, 9-9.
We didn't trouble the scorer in our fourth dig. Gavin Barrett got K2'd then Isaac Dangerfield got walked. Isaac stole second and third. Nick Evreniadis got walked. Arti Dow hit a magnificent fly ball to centre which was caught. Unfortunately Isaac had taken off on the hit and did not tag up on third and was put out at third.
Connor McClure stepped onto the mound for our last fielding dig. He gave up a hit to the first batter, who was subsequently thrown out on the steal by Thomas O'Connell. Walked the next two batters then K2'd the next two, giving up no runs.
End result a 9-9 draw.
While the draw is not ideal it is better than a loss.

Newsletter Week 15

While many other South Australia sporting teams have fallen by the wayside in recent times, SA's baseball side has risen from the ashes to make the 2009/2010 Dominos Claxton Shield grand final against Victoria, starting next Friday in Melbourne.

Not since winning the Claxton Shield in 1980 has a South Australian team played in a baseball grand final, making this year's effort one out of the box.

You can read match reports on the Claxton Shield website as well as purchase tickets if you are making the trip over to Victoria this coming weekend!

For those of us lucky enough to be at Norwood Oval last night the atmosphere was electric! If you haven't heard South Australian Dan Wilson took one of the best catches you are ever going to see with his hand reaching over the homerun fence to catch the ball! If you want to watch a replay of the game you can go to the webcast or if you just want to see Dan's catch fast forward to around the 45 minute mark of the webcast to see this amazing catch!

If you can't make it to Victoria you can watch the game live via webcast on the Claxton Shield website

On behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club I would like to wish the South Australian team every success in its clash this weekend!

As a result of the Claxton Shield being played in Adelaide over the past weekend, the Division 1 and 2 games were not played. We are yet to hear from Baseball SA as to when these two games will be rescheduled. I will let you know as soon as they tell us!

I would like to remind you that the Sturt Baseball Club will hold its Gala Day on Sunday 14 th February 2010, commencing at 3.00 pm for the Division 1 clash between Sturt and Southern Districts.

In another initiative Sturt has obtained permission from Baseball SA to reschedule our Little League home derby from a Sunday to Wednesday 3rd March 2010 commencing at 6.00 pm- this will mean the much anticipated derby between Glenn Young's Little League 2-Sturt and Darren French's Little League 2-Saints can be played at home and hopefully show case this game. The bar will be open and the BBQ fired up, so please make an effort to come and support our up and coming Sturt players of the future!

Also a reminder for all of you who have mobile phones with internet capability, we now have a hand held version of the Sturt Baseball Club website called Saints Mobile Edition! Simply type in http://www.sturtbaseballclub.org.au/ into your phone's internet browser and this will take you to our mobile site.

Sturt 9 defeated Gawler 7
After last weeks win it was important to follow up with another good performance and to the boys credit they did, defeating Gawler 9-7 in the last dig. We put Dakota on the hill for his 2nd start in 3s and considering how ill he was he got us of to a fine start striking out out 5 of the 7 outs he threw to and only giving up 3 runs. Nick Tuffnell came on and threw very well for the rest of the game , Nick's hitting just keeps getting better and better smashing one to the fence for a stand up double and a single later to go 2 for 3 , great game Nick. Cam Thorpe came back into the side this week and did an excellent job at short stop, in the box he also collected a hit and a walk. This week I put the challenge to Matt Franke throwing him in the 2 hole and he delivered with his 1st safe hit in 3s also scoring a RBI keep working Matt, he also had another great day at 3rd base. Brian McGuinness another inclusion had a great day in the box going 2 for 3. Dale Martens , Ryan Mattschoss and Dave Harris also collected safe hits each. Sam Hollis collected himself 2 walks for the day. The big difference the last 2 weeks is pitch selection and working the count. In the last 2 weeks we have stolen 23 bases it makes a massive difference having baserunners. Great job guys when we play the full 2 hours the results speak for themselves. To come back in the last dig the way we did shows how much we believe in ourselves, keep it going!

Northern Districts 5 defeated Sturt 4

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke) Sponsored by: Ace Panel Systems (Major Sponsor) & Tony Colyer Pty Ltd (Team Sponsor)

Defeated West Torrens 13-0
A slight turnaround from our previous meeting where we were mercied 1-13, we turned the tables with a Bear on fire on the hill and the bats a hummin. The Bruce Packer field looked a picture, a credit to the man and it played true all day with a sensational double play from second baseman Zulu catching a hot shot and then catching the runner fumbling off first. Shrek had a day out at short covering the hole, a double play and hot with the bat, Doc just worked the room at the dish, treating it like any other consultation and ran the bases like a man possessed. Smally smacked the ball through the field and FOT had just a day out smacking the ball hard all over the shop. Spider plucked a lazy couple of hits which matched his prowess at first, Pop hit the ball hard again and Reg got in on the act with a hit, but little to do in the field. Then there was the Bear with a casual 3 hits and pitching stats to make you cry of 6 inns / 5 H / 4 SO / 0BB / 0 ER with 23 batters faced and throwing 47 strikes from 58 pitches, surely he must be pushing for a Div 1 spot now ! The difference this week was a great pitching display with a field that backed him up and hitters all through the line up. Also, Shrek incurs a team fine based on an indiscretion in the male amenities pre game that required covering up by means of several cans of air freshener, you seriously need to look at your diet ! On a roll now with 2 in a row, look out 7th spot and relegation hopefully evaded once again. The elusive Woody managed an appearance today, dribbled a ball over the infield for a dash eight and then promptly announced his retirement, I thought you actually had to participate in something to retire from it?

Woodville def Sturt 17-10
Once again the game we could have won, we were fairly even for half of the game only to get a 7 run mercy against us BUT then we returned the favour with a 7 runner of our own - Well done!! We were 3 runs down at the start of the last dig but got 4 more runs against us with no time left to have a bat. Good fielding combination of Steve Smith on 2nd and Justin Ransford on Short, both showing strong team work. Greg Milburn and Justin Richardson have also found a groove with the Catcher /Pitcher combination that is working well, we are lucky to have them both. On that note we need to back these guys up more, silly errors in the field are killing us and this is still the reason we have not won - Please show up to practice and let's get that win in that we deserve.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)

Sturt 6 drew with East Torrens 6
We jumped East Torrens early and by the 5 innings we had a 3 nothing lead, this was from some great pitching by Lewis Townsend again continuing on from where he finished last week, throwing 72 pitches for 48 strikes and 24 balls with 5 k’s and the field backed him up. Unfortunately for us their bats came alive in the next two innings and they where able to tie it up in their last at bat. David Nicholas came in for Lewis and threw 51 pitches for 29 strikes and 22 balls. They hit David a bit and we had some late errors in the game to allow East Torrens to get away with the draw, after David Sam Day came in to finish off for us throwing 8 pitches for 4 strikes and 4 balls. This was not a game that should have ended in a draw, this was a game that got away from us. The boys as always enjoyed themselves during the game but not the end result but as I always say as long as they have fun and enjoy the game I am happy as well. The only real negative from this game was that they did not use their voices during the game. Thanks to both Sam Day and Jackson Brebner-Russ for helping out on the day. Jackson did a great job behind the plate for half a game before moving to third.
Boys we just need to concentrate for the full two hours of game time and we can go a long way in the season.
Safe Hits: Townsend 3, Brebner-Russ 2, Day, Lamonby & Brennan 1 each

Defeated Glenelg 11-3
With our first game against Glenelg for the season, it was a little unknown of our opposition and I asked the boys for a solid hit out after last weeks loss and hopefully some confidence building in all aspects of the game. Matt pitched well for his 5 innings with better spots thrown this week and Macca helped him out with good pitch selection and making some tough outs at the plate. Bradley hit the cover off the ball with 3 strong hits as did Sam with 2 doubles and Macca chimed in with 2 nice shots. Matt also hit solidly for 3 hits. The boys made a great double play with Jordan throwing out the hitter at first from third and then Dylan throwing a rocket back to third to get the runner from second (that’s what it’s all about). There were also 2 runners tagged at home with good defensive work, one being an 8-6-2 with Jordan throwing true and hard to the plate and Sam throwing accurately for Macca to make the outs. Sam also played well at short and closed out the last innings on the hill. A much better defensive day today and our offense put the pressure on early with a 5 run first innings but then slightly took the foot off the pedal. Well played today lads.
Hits – Roberts 2, Franke 3, MacBeth 2, Trembath 3, Colmer 2, Holt 1, Wayne 1, Lightbody 1
Battery – Franke 5 Inns / 5 H / 2 K2 / 3 BB / 0 ER – Roberts 1 Inns / 1 H / 1 K2 / 0 BB / 1 ER to MacBeth

Sturt 11 defeated Glenelg 5
Great to be back in the winners circle this week. I asked the team to get a good start and put Glenelg on the back foot. We did just that hitting the ball well and scoring 5 runs in the first dig. Henry Brennan started on the mound this week and held Glenelg in our first defensive dig highlight was Zach Lunnons catch at right field to help out his pitcher. We were on fire and continued to hit the ball hard and scored another 5 runs in the second dig and showed how aggressive base running can really pay off. Glenelg pulled back two after a couple of walks and wild throws but Henry showed real character and fought hard to finished the second dig for the team ;score line 10-2. The third dig we only managed the one run offensively and defensively the pitchers struggled to find the strike zone and Glenelg also picked up a few hit and scored 3 runs to make it 11-5. Our last at bat was three up three down signs that we may have gone to sleep half way through the game. Tyler Lunnon pitch superbly to finish the last dig with 2 strike outs and a fly ball to first base. Special mention the Charlie Goldworthy for a great outfield catch and picking up 3 hits as our lead off batter. Boys great start to this game but we probably didn't quite finish it off. We need to stay focused, positive and switched on for the entire game to take our game to the next level. Particularly when the pitchers are struggling this is the time they need you guys in the field talking and ready for all plays not losing concentration as we all know pitching is not an easy job. See you all at training and look forward to Golden Grove next week, lets stay focused for every pitch of the day.

Sturt U14 "Sluggers" 3 lost to Northern Districts 13
We took on the top team and faced the best pitching we have so far in this division…and a catcher with a good arm to second base!
Congratulations to RJ, Matt and Damon for each getting good hits from him.
Our pitchers did their best, but we got behind early and with too many base on balls throughout the game we just weren’t in it.
We spent 80% of the time on the field, and the hot conditions sapped the guys early.
To their credit, when I asked for a “new game attitude” when we came into bat at the bottom of the 3rd the boys did lift and brought in 2 runs..
We will do better next time against them… we learned a lot about them today, and didn’t give away much about ourselves and we look forward to the next encounter!
Many thanks to Bill Magoo for his excellent umpiring and Gary for stepping in as base umpire. Maureen’s return as scorer was welcomed by all and as usual Simon ran a tight ship!

Sturt 16 defeated Southern Districts 2
After a great start to 2010 against Kensington last week the boys came out firing again in our game against Southern Districts at Souths.
Our bats started the game brilliantly with us scoring the maximum 5 runs in both of the first 2 innings before scoring 3 , 3 and zero in our remaining innings. Southern Districts battled the game out well and their pitchers threw good strikes however the Sturt bats were firing!
With Zach Evreniadis pitching well through the first 3 innings (and getting 3 safe hits from his 4 at bats) the fielding was exceptional with the highlight being Mitchell Lightbodys' unassisted double play at Short stop and a solid job behind the dish by Braden Richardson. Stuart Brennan did a great job in relief and although his strike percentage wasn't as high as Zach's he still recorded 7 strikeouts.
From a batting of view it was pleasing to see the boys being much more selective with which pitches they were "going after". We collected 17 quality safe hits for the game and showed improved concentration and application for the duration. We now meet West Torrens this week with the winner likely to finish the season in top position so there is a lot to play for on Sunday.
We still have a lot of practice and learning to do as some of our base running and alertness on occasions is disappointing.
Keep up the great work boys and let's have a good session on Wednesday as we look forward to next week.
Well done to the SA Claxton Shield Team and good luck for next week.
Go the Saints!!!

Little League 2-Sturt 14 defeated Kensington 4
After relinquishing the coaching duties last week to Alistair I needed to come up with a win this week to keep my job. We were off to Kensington where we ALWAYS want to win, particularly many of these boys who remember the tight battles we had against the Cardinals in T ball. After the warm up I was a bit worries as discussion was on how tired everybody was and how hot it was! The boys obviously saved it for the game. Our first at bat saw our lead off batter with the smallest strike zone in the league get a walk and then good hits form Cam and Jack saw us score some earned runs. A few more walks and then a hit form Will gave us the perfect start 5-0. Jack then single handedly with just 13 pitches and three KC's saw us back at bat. Hits from Jamie, Sam, Cam and Jack saw another two runs on the board. Cameron threw fast but a little erratically but still managed three strike outs to retire their team for just two runs (on walks!) Edward led off with a great double to right field and supported by a flat hard double by Jamie Dayman and single to Cam and a few walks to score another four runs. Will started slowly on the mound but then came back with a vengeance to hold them to just one run completing the innings with a fly ball catch. Our last at bat saw Edward get his second double for the day, solid hits to Jamie L and Will and then another hit to the outfield form Jamie to score another 3 earned runs. Jamie D then completed a good day at the diamond with three K2's to finish the game, Sturt 14-4 up. Way to go boys.

Hits Young 3, Allen 2, Last 2, Dayman 2, J Bennetts 2, Robinson 2

Today's game had an excellent comeback with out the fairy tale finish. We drew with Goodwood 11-11.
Prior to today our boys have got by with pitching. Today we came across a good batting and running team that pressured our pitchers and fielders, which saw the boys respond with good batting and running of there own.
Goodwood batted first and faced Carlin Stutley. Carlin pitched very well forcing batters to hit rather than just watch. Unfortunately our field couldn't get the outs for Carlin and we yielded the maximum 5 runs. Our first at bat saw 3 runs scored with Ethan Egglestone and Connor Dyer (double) getting good hits. The rest of the line up were walked or K'd. We scored 3 and were down 5-3 after 1.
Ethan Egglestone took to the mound for the second dig. He walked the first 3 batters, K'd the 4th gave up a hit allow a run to score but getting the second out, then k'd the last batter. Goodwood only second a 1. Our second at bat went much like Goodwoods. Ethan Egglestone, Connor Dyer (an inside the park home run) and Matthew Johnston all got hits. Unfortunately we couldn't get any more runners home. After 2 digs we were 6-4 down. A position that the Saints aren't use to seeing.
Matthew Johnston pitched the 3rd dig , giving up none. He k'd the first batter walked the next 2, K'd the 4th batter, walked the 5th and k'd the 6th. An excellent return. Our at batte saw the Saints score the maximum with Yannick and Arno Noritto getting hits and the rest of the players being walked. Aggressive base running saw us get across the plate on poor returns to the picther. End of the 3rd and the Saints are up 9-6.
Arno Norrito pitched the last dig giving the maximum. Arno worked hard but struggled to hit the stike zone (a few sessions with Mr Mac will get this sorted). We went into out last at bat needed 3 runs to win. Arno led off and got walked. Gavin Barrett got a single. Ethan, Connor and Matthew were walked. Ty Langford singled scoring Ethan to tie up the score. Isaac and Yannick got K'd so the game ended in a draw.
The positive form the game were that the boys toughed it out and kept working and got themselves back into the game. Also it would be remiss of me not to mention Connor Dyer's excellent effort behind the plate (caught the whole game in trying conditions).

Claxton goes to third game!

Tonight South Australia defeated New South Wales 3-2!
The third and deciding game of the series will be played at Norwood Oval on Sunday night commencing at 7 pm. Please get down to Norwood to support South Australia!
If you can't make it to the game you can watch the game live on webcast with Peter Gee one of the commentators who is doing an excellent job bringing you all the action!

This result means that our Division 1 and 2 sides will not be playing the scheduled Baseball SA game on Sunday. I understand that Division 1 and 2 players are still required for an internal trial as previously advised.
All Junior games will be played as scheduled.
Good luck to South Australia in their quest to win the decider game on Sunday night!
