Newsletter Week 14

Last weekend Baseball was back in full swing with all of our Junior teams returning after the Christmas break!
This coming weekend South Australian fans are set for a treat as Norwood Oval plays host to Adelaide's first playoff game in over 20 years. The "best of three", semi-final series will see the resurgent South Australians take on either perennial powerhouses the NSW Patriots, or winners of the previous two Claxton Shield titles, Perth HEAT.

For SA, who won the inaugural Claxton Shield Championship in 1934 and are chasing their first title since 1980, a home final means a real opportunity to complete a manifest destiny by saying farewell with another championship as the Shield makes way for the return of the Australian Baseball League later this year.

As a special offer on all advance purchases, fans can buy a series pass for entry to Game 1 & 2 of the series, and gain entry to Game 3 (if required) absolutely FREE.

GAME 1: FRIDAY, JANUARY 29 - 7.05pm
GAME 2: SATURDAY, JANUARY 30 - 7.05pm
GAME 3: SUNDAY, JANUARY 31 - 7.05pm (if required)

Visit the Claxton Shield website to buy tickets online

As a result of the high level of interest that is expected for these finals Baseball SA has determined the following in relation to the scheduled rounds for this weekend:

1. On Saturday 30 January 2010 all Division 1 and Division 2 games are postponed and will be rescheduled to be played at a later date. As it turns out we have a bye for both Division 1 and 2 on Saturday so this will not effect us!
2. On Saturday 30 January 2010 all games scheduled for Division 3 to Division 7 will be played at the allocated times.
3. On Sunday 31 January 2010 all Division 1 and Division 2 games will depend on the results of the first two Claxton Shield games. Namely if the Claxton Shield series is over after the first two games then Division 1 and Division 2 will play their games scheduled for 31 January. If the series is not completed then the Division 1 and Division 2 games will be rescheduled to be played at a later date. The games are live on the Claxton Shield website so everyone will know by later on Saturday night whether we will be playing Division 1 and 2 games on Sunday. If the games go ahead Sturt will be playing Glenelg who is top of the ladder in both Divisions!

I will also send out an email on Saturday night and update our website so everyone is clear on what is happening! 4. On Sunday 31 January 2010 all youth matches U18 to Little League Minor will be played at their allocated times.

I am also pleased to advise that following the success of past Gala Day's, the Sturt Baseball Club will hold its Gala Day on Sunday 14 th Febuary 2010, commencing at 3.00 pm for the Division 1 clash between Sturt and Southern Districts. Once again we have secured the services of Peter Gee to head up our commentary team. We have received terrific feedback about past Gala Days so please make every effort to attend. We have extended a special invite to all of our generous sponsors to be our guests on the day to thank them for the outstanding contribution they have made to the club over this season. Visit our Events Calendar for all the latest Event information!

Sturt 4 defeated Woodville 3
A fantastic effort from the young group again today. Paul Mildren was back from Claxton Shield duties and pitched 5 strong innings (hit less other than a running bunt!) and passed the ball over to Craig Wright. Craig looked far more comfortable than last week and held the Senators at bay until the 9th which Daniel Lee calmly closed out for us.
The hitting was much better this week and a huge welcome back to Sam Day and Jackson Brebner Russ from state duties. Sam picked up 3 hits, one crucial double to pick up 2 RBIs. Daniel Turner and Angus Roeger hit back to back HRs to get the boys going.
A great result and reward for hard work on the track in the past week.
Hits - Day 3, Frogley 2, Holmes, Turner (HR), Roeger (HR), Lee, Young

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)

Sturt 4 lost to Woodville 7
After a slow start the boys got things going late but it wasnt enough to catch the Senators.
Ban Packer got into his rhythm after the first and pitched a pretty good game and defensively things were pretty good. Offensively we still looked sluggish. This game is about doing the little things and taking your chances when they are there. We were not good enough to do either of these.
If things aren't going your way, you have to work harder on the training track. Let's make sure we do just that.

Sturt 8 defeated Southern Districts 2
A great team win against Southern Districts 8-2. The game started tight for the 1st 4 digs at 2 all , then we awoke getting 4 in the 5th then 2 more in the sixth. It was a good sign that there were no lapses and we played the full 7 digs, great job. Matt Franke had a very good day at 3rd making some very good plays. Dakota continued his state form collecting 2 safe hits. Nick tuffnell continued his great form from x-mas collecting 2 hits. Dale Martens is getting better each game with bat after many years not using it going 2-3 with a walk including a 2 run triple. Ryan Mattschoss caught a very good and smart game, he also collected himself a hit and a sac fly. Michael Robinson after getting off the plane an hour or so before the game did a great job at 2nd as well as getting a hit (thanx for bolting to the game). Sam Hollis just keeps keeping on also collecting himself a safe hit. Thanx to Dean Franke for coming down and helping coach. Players in Div 3 need to keep putting pressure on players above them so keep pressuring for a spot, keep playing hard for entire games.
Hits:11 Stolen Bases:13.

Division 4 (Coaches: Stan Warrilow & Simon Gooley)

Sturt 11 defeated Port Adelaide 0
And they call the wind Mariah (you oldies would know that one).
So off we went to sunny Port Adelaide on a beautiful Saturday afternoon (pity about the wind).
Anyway we started a bit sluggish but were hitting the ball hard and in the 3rd innings we exploded with 4 runs and then backed it up with another 7 in the 4th.
We didn’t trouble the scorers in the 5th but the damage was done.
Takashi picked up 3 hits and 2 stolen bases in his best game for the year.
Sadly he will be returning to Japan with his family to live on the 8th of February so we only have him for 2 more games.
Well done to Adam Sincock who picked up his first RBI’s for the year.
Defensively our pitching was outstanding with Matt Saint throwing 4 digs and Dylan Holt 1. Between them they didn’t give up a single hit.
That’s right folks a no hitter which was fantastic.
I even made an appearance at right field due to a late withdrawal by our Venezuelan import. Let’s say that I batted like a true number 9.
Winning sure beats the hell out of losing.
Gools and I have next week off so Pete (junior) Turner will be filling in as coach and heading out to take on the North boys.
Let’s hope it’s not too hot.
HITS – Takashi 3, French, Gooley, Mulryan 2, Turner, McArdle, Sincock 1.

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke) Sponsored by: Ace Panel Systems (Major Sponsor) & Tony Colyer Pty Ltd (Team Sponsor)

Sturt 9 defeated Northern Districts 1
Well with the tribal chief ZULU (Dean Franke) away with the three’s it was left up to the Wild Thing (Norm Sluga) and Smally (Chris Small) to get the result. As the day began and the rest started to file in we noticed that with all the excitement at the zoo with the Pandas the Bear (Barry Lunnon) had slipped out the back gate and found his way to Mitcham and with no hesitation was happy to take the ball. Again what can you say about the Bear that has not already been said, 7 innings played 7 innings pitched 10 K2’s and the Bear had slipped away again until next weekend. We started off with a bang and 4 runs in then 3 up three down to lead at the bottom of the first, from here on we held them scoreless until the 5th while we added 4 more to their one. On our run spree we even had the spider (Neil Stewart) using all his eight legs from a fly ball from FOT ( Bruce Winter), Spider almost got caught in his own web. Shrek (Ben Colyer) was rock solid behind the dish and the Doc (Glenn Young) will have to fight his way back into the side. Daisy (Chris Day) made one play for the third out in the fourth, FOT took a great running catch at centre field and turned it into a double play with a throw to Wild Thing at Second. Wild Thing was solid at short and took everything that came his way. Spider was picking balls out the dirt for the outs and Rowdy (Daniel Burns) took a great catch to stop a challenge from the opposition in the fifth when they looked like coming back. Reg (David Lee) was all alone at left and only using the gas to run off and on the field. AJ (Andrew Johnston), Pop (Mark Burns) and Smally all had quiet days. A good result for the 5’s as we make a late run for the finals and unfortunately the only thing that will stop us getting there is the end of the season.
Safe Hits:- Colyer (2), Day (1), Lunnon (2), Stewart (1), Winter (2)
Battery Bear to Shrek complete game.

Division 6 (Coach: Dave Smith)Sponsored by: Smith Motor Co

Northern Districts 19 defeated Sturt 6

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)

Sturt 8 defeated GGCD 3
This was one of those games that we needed to win to help us with our finals chance and with no training for some and others away with other commitments we were down to seven, Late night calls and the reliable Matthew MacBeth and Dakota Mitchell were prepared to make the long trip out to GGCD with us. We also welcomed Lewis Townsend to the Sturt Baseball Club with his first U18’s game and the only way to do this was to throw him the ball, He went for 1 ½ hours, 5.1 innings throwing 93 pitches, 56 strikes and 37 balls – 9 strikeouts, what a way to introduce yourself. We also welcomed Jay Lunnon back from injury and what an asset he is to have back. Matthew MacBeth was behind the dish for us and after two weeks of State he was solid throwing two outs at second and should have had four, he also had 2 safe hits for the day. Dakota’s day was not as good with the bat but he was good at short when he came in from right field where he did not see the ball, he also had two weeks of State. I also see that both Dakota and Matthew are right in there with the rest of the boys and feel very at home with the U18’s. Harrison came in to finish the game off on the mound and struggled with his range but was still good enough to finish the job Lewis had started, he through 32 pitches for 18 strikes, 14 balls – 0 K2’s but the field backed him up as they had backed up Lewis. Although we did not have many safe hits (7 for the day) GGCD made a lot of errors in the field which helped us score runs with 2 outs, like in the second 2 out and we ended up with 4 runs (2 errors to GGCD). The boys all played well and they were aggressive with their base running and in the batters box. Again it is nice to see all the boys having fun on the diamond and a laugh and joke before and after the game with each other.
Safe Hits:- MacBeth, Lunnon, Hollis 2 each and 1 to Wood

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Dean Franke) Sponsored by: Premier Trailers & National Tool Distributors

Defeated by a better side in WT 5 – 13
Positives – some good hit and runs implemented, 10 safe hits, Dakota’s pitching effort, fight back in the last innings
Things to work on – pitch selection, fielding, throwing, concentration on bases, aggression, bull pens and throwing to spots, getting easy critical outs
I was most impressed in WT ability to prepare for the game without input from their coaches and their overall attitude, something we need to aspire to if we are to be competitive at that level, a lesson to be learnt
Hits - Lemon 1, Mitchell 2, MacBeth 2, Franke 1, Holt 1, Roberts 1, Trembath 1, Lightbody 1
Battery – Franke 1 2/3 inns 9 H, 1 BB, 1 SO, 4 ER, Mitchell 2 1/3 inns, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 SO, 0 ER, Holt 1 inn, 3 H, 4 BB, 0 SO, 4 ER to Trembath

Sturt U14 "Sluggers" 12 defeated Gawler 1
Dear old SABL saw fit to send us out to Gawler for our 1st game of the year… for the 2nd time this year (they were as confused as us as to why we didn’t play at Sturt – they hear we have “a nice ground!”)
Anyway, we got there with a bare 9 players despite:
- Lance Armstrong and his buddies staging a blockade across the city
- Gawler arranging ALL train crossings to be stuck on “stop” so you couldn’t cross
- Angus “the slammer” away in India = bare 9

Despite 4 weeks of cobwebs, the lads did very well!
RJ pitched 3 innings and did a great job – hit a couple of batters (Bishop tradition?) but overall good accuracy considering the layoff with 3 K’s… and Matt Amberg also showed great control to close with confidence.
Good fielding all round –Damon had a great game at 2nd, both Will and then Dan did a great job behind the dish with only a few balls getting by. Tommy was solid at first, and then Ryack did a good job there in 2nd half (including a great foul catch!)
Bats were disciplined and solid considering the layoff too – we took the walks when offered and hit and ran well all day!
A very strong home run from William Hill was the long shot of the match as well as his 2 singles
Matt and Tommy had 2 singles, Ryack a good double + a BB, Josh single + 2 BB, Fraser a single + BB, Reuben single + BB, Damon Single + BB, and Dan 3 BB.
Thanks to all the parents for making it out there and pitching in as usual – and special mention to Andy Amberg who did a great scoring job!
Looking fwd to round 12 at Sturt next week against the league leaders Northern Districts – the only team we haven’t played! So if you can make it out to the 10am game, look fwd to seeing you there!

Matthew Amberg, Reuben Bishop, Tommy Bishop, Fraser Crameri, Damon Gray, William Hill, Daniel Ortiz, Ryack Parsons, Josh McLoughney (Angus Read away)

Sturt 9 defeated Kensington 0
Happy New Year to all you Saints supporters
What a difference a New Year makes!
After finishing 2009 with a disappointing result the boys came out firing in our game against a very competitive team in Kensington.
With Mitchell Lightbody pitching well through the first 4 innings (although he had a bad case of sand rash!) the boys looked really aggressive both in the field and the batting box.
Stuart Brennan had his best game of the season and hit the ball hard all day while Peter Littleyuile found some good form as well. Our "surprise packet" of the season, Braydon Richardson, was again solid at first base and picked up a couple of very timely hits while Henry Wood and Tyson Ottaway both got very good hits and were great behind the mask!
Simon Adkins (watch this space, this kid can play) reproduced some of his early season form with the bat and was rock solid at second base while Max Staggs, Brodie Macbeth and Stuart Gardiner all contributed to the result.
We have a lot of work to do in the remaining 5 weeks in the lead up to finals as some of our base running and pitch selection when hitting needs improving if we are to be a serious contender.
Keep up the great work boys and remember the pressure is on all of us to perform week in week out to secure positions in the team in the run up to the finals.
Go the Saints!!!

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young)

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Darren French) Sponsored by: Brownhill Creek Tourist Park

Little League 2-Saints 11 defeated Saints 10 Well today showed what long break does for pitchers and batters. It is safe to say that our pitchers struggled today, but we managed to squeak a win. Southern Districts Hawks have improved significantly and pushed out lads today, in fact, lead at the end of the first dig (2-1). Our at bat, saw us strand 3 runners after good hits to Matthew Johnston (double), Thomas O'Connell and Nick Everenadis. Carlin Stutley pitched the dig for us and faced only five batters. An excellent job.
Our next at bat saw us score the maximum 5, with only two hits to Thomas O'Connell and Carlin Stutley. Thomas O'Connell pitched the second dig and was not his usual self. He gave up 4 runs through 7 walks, but K2'd 3 batters. I am sure Thomas will be working hard during the week to regain his usual control.
Our 3rd at bat saw us score the maximum 5 with good hits to Matthew Johnston (double) and Isaac Dangerfield. The hawks needed to score 5 to win in their last at bat. Ethan Egglestone pitched this dig for us and hit the first 3 batters, which kept the remaining batters away from the plate. Eli Eggelstone then adjust his position behind the plate, setting up outside, which helped Ethan find his target again. He then K2'd the third batter, gave up a couple of hits and walked two (which yeilded 4 runs). He then K2'd the last to batters to get the Saints over the line by a margin of one run.
Well done boys... The boys need to work on their pitching and hitting during the next few, because we will come up against good pitching and will need to hit to win.
Hits: Matthew Johnston (2 x Doubles), Thomas O'Connell (2), Carlin Stutley, Nick Everenadis, Isaac Dangerfield

Newsletter Week 13

Baseball fans have been treated to some great baseball games over the last week, starting last Thursday night with the Claxton Shield back at Norwood for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Our own Paul Mildren pitched on Friday night before probably the best crowd for the series. Paul's pitching is described on the SA Baseball website as "a magnificent complete game pitching performance from Paul Mildren."
Our Club is very proud of Paul's outstanding peformance.

At a Club level all our Senior teams started again on Saturday, unfortunately our Division 3-6 sides all started the second half of the season with a loss, but clearly the highlight of the weekend were wins achieved by both our Division 1 and 2 sides! These wins have resulted in Division 1 and 2 moving further up the ladder with both sides moving from fifth place last week up to fourth place after these wins on the weekend.

This is the best position our club has been in for our Division 1 side for many years and is really testament to the outstanding work done by our A Grade Coach Tony Catt over many years in developing the junior players within our club. There is a real buzz around the club and the positive and supportive approach of all of our senior players is evident to anyone who sees these guys in action!
Well done to all of our Senior players who are putting in a huge effort at training and are presenting as a very professional outfit!

On behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club I would like to welcome Lewis Townsend and his family to our Club. Lewis sought a clearance from Kensington to come and play with us and I am pleased to say that we were able to negotiate a clearance for him to join us. Lewis had his first game with Sturt on Saturday pitching for Division 3 after having sat on the bench for a number of our Senior teams over the last couple of weeks while we were sorting out his clearance.

Congratulations to all of junior players who represented the State over the last couple of weeks. The Under 18's and Under 16's finished 4th while the Under 14s finished 5th.

Team statistics are available for Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18

All our Junior teams recommence this coming weekend for the second half of the season after their Christmas break. I wish all Junior teams every success for the second half of the season.

Sturt 7 defeated Adelaide 4
In what can be best described as an ugly win, the main thing was that we won.
The pitchers struggled to get in any rhythm, the hitting was sporadic with poor pitch selection and the fielding had better days. However, good sides learn how to win and that is exactly what this group is figuring out which is a very positive sign. Special mentions to Daniel Turner with 4 hits and Daniel Lee with 3 who batted magnificently the whole day.
This is the wake up call we need to go back to focussing on the process, not the outcomes and improving on the training track.
We must remember that you are not judged by your mistakes, you are judged by your response to them.
A big week ahead.
Hits - Turner 4, Lee 3, Young 2, Watts, Carter, Frogley, Roeger

Sturt 11 defeated Adelaide 4
The Division 2 boys did what they had to do and won convincingly. Jared Holland and Tom Winter both hit the ball extremely well all day and are knocking on the door for selection in the A grade. Defensively there were a couple of mistakes but on the whole another solid performance.
A very tough run of games ahead for the B grade and they need to bring there best games week in week out to ensure a finals berth again this season.

West Torrens 7 defeated Sturt 4
Being the first game back for the boys after Christmas, we were hoping we weren't too rusty and started well, with new recruit Lewis Townsend taking the hill and retiring the side in order. It was a very tight game until the 4th where a couple of errors hurt us on the scoreboard. To the boys credit, they didn't roll over and kept the game within reach until the last innings where we finally got the bats rolling - unfortunately it was too little too late, going down 7-4. Both Lewis and Nick Tuffnell did a great job on the hill, staying composed and getting the job done. It was again our hitting that let us down and we need more of a contribution from 1-9 to be a contender in this competition. I also want to welcome Lewis and his family to the club, you will be a great asset going forward and im sure you will enjoy your time with the saints.
Hits: Tuffnell 2, Townsend 2, Robinson 1

Division 4 (Coaches: Stan Warrilow & Simon Gooley)
West Torrens 11 d Sturt 4
The big boys from West Torrens swung their big bats and that was that. Offensively we picked up 4 hits in 7 innings and managed to score 4 runs.
Defensively there were a few positives; Kingsley (senior) Turner had his best game for the season at third base and made a fantastic home to first double play on 1 knee!
Matt Mulryan did a good job on the hill for 6 innings but the Eagles boys found the gap between third and short far too often.
Adam Sincock continues to catch everything that comes his way at right field.
That's about it campers.
See you next week.
HITS - Mcardle, K Turner, Yokoyama, Gooley 1

Flinders 15 defeated Sturt 10
Spiderbait !!!! Div 5 welcomed back Spider to the Saints fold this week after several years in hibernation and wham bham what a return, with his first 2 at bats over the fence and 6 RBI’s it was definitely the Spider show early, unfortunately, defensively we just couldn't keep it up.
We led the top side 8-0 with Reggee Lee just on fire for his first forte on the mound and with him tiring into the second it was time to throw the Small one who it is fair to say struggled and we came off after 2 innings 8-7 up.
Wild Thing followed and swallowed and Ben Young finished off. AJ was just a rock behind the dish and Spider at first just seemed to get better as the day went on, FOT was the cornerstone at third and Doc and Pop ran around in the outfield. Coach Z had 2 doubles , FOT had 2 singles as did Reggee and Pop looked the goods in the batters box.
Hits - Pop 2, Doc 2, Spider 2 (HR's), Wild Thing 2, Zulu 2, FOT 2, Reggee 2
Battery - Reggee, Smally, Wild Thing, Be Young to AJ
Thanks to J Small and Ben Young for helping out

Sturt website goes mobile!

For those of you with Blackberry's, iPhones or other mobile phones which have the capacity to connect to the internet, I have developed a mobile version of the Sturt Baseball Club website.

It has those features from the website that you most likely would want to access from your mobile phone.

You can access it from the same web address as our website at http://www.sturtbaseballclub.org.au/.

You will notice that it looks different to the Sturt website that you would access on your PC. For those of you familiar with such mobile sites as Qantas you would be aware that it is quite common practice to have a different version of a website on a mobile.

As there are so many mobile phones on the market there may be some difference in how the pages look depending on your phone.

I have checked Blackberry, iPhone and newer models of the Nokia for compatibility.

With game results being placed on line as soon as possible after games have finished I am hoping that this mobile version of our website will be of use to our members.

For those of you who don't receive the Eastern Courier, there is an article in today's edition about our ground. There is also a section there where you can write a comment. I think any supportive comments from our members would be helpful, given that we have all worked so hard at doing our best to address neighbour's concerns. I am aware that a number of the neighbours are very supportive of our being at the ground.

New Year Edition Newsletter Week 12

Happy New Year! I wish all our players and members all the best for 2010!

The second half of the season started this past weekend for our Division 1 and 2 sides with extremely high temperatures on both Saturday and Sunday! As many of you know the Sturt Baseball Club has for many years been advocating for Baseball SA to set clear rule for managing heat stress. Unfortunately last year, Baseball SA changed the rule related to heat stress following pressure from other clubs which has resulted in changes for seniors with all grades now required to play irrespective of temperature. Our website has a section under about>hot weather which outlines the current rules.

Unfortunately during Saturday's Division 2 game at our home ground the BUASA Umpire collapsed due to heat stress!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Julie Thorpe, David Lee, Janet and Glenn Young who rendered assistance to the umpire.
Our club takes very seriously the welfare of our players and officials and have written to Baseball SA asking them to urgently reconsider their policies in respect to heat stress to bring them in line with the best medical evidence.
It is interesting to note that the Australian Open would have postponed games at yesterday's temperatures, yet Baseball SA allowed games to continue at this same temperature. Further research information on heat stress is available on the Zunis Foundation website.

On a positive note despite these oppressive conditions our Division 1 and 2 sides had season defining wins by winning both Div 1 and 2 games on Saturday and Sunday!
This is an outstanding achievement given that we had a number of our players away at either Claxton Shield or Junior State Championships.
These wins place both Division 1 and 2 in fifth position on the ladder!

I would particularly like to pay tribute to Tom Winter who did an outstanding job over the weekend, by coaching the Div 1 and 2 sides on Saturday as well as playing and then fronting up again on Sunday to coach the Division 2 side and also play in the Division 1 side. Thank you Tom!

I would also like to thank David Lee who as the Division 1 Manager did an outstanding job on both Saturday and Sunday ensuring that all our players were appropriately hydrated in the shocking weather conditions. Thank you David!
Once again Bruce Packer was out there in the extreme heat on Saturday preparing our ground. Bruce is also a legend and Life Member of our Club but I would also like to once again acknowledge his ongoing outstanding contribution to our club. Thank you Bruce!

A reminder that later this week the Claxton Shield will be back at Norwood Oval. An extra game has now been scheduled for Thursday 14th January 2010 at 6.35 pm. This game is very club orientated as the ABL will be hosting a Home Run Derby programme beginning at 5:45pm. Sturt will have David Carter representing Sturt in this derby. South Australia will face Victoria in other games on both Friday 15th January and Saturday 16th January. Visit our Events Calendar for more information.
This series versus Victoria is big as it will determine where SA finishes in the standings and where they will be placed in the finals. To ensure big crowds the ABL will be offering a 3-day pass that will get you into all 4 of the games January 14-16, $20 for adults and $10 for youth and concessionaires. These are available to purchase over the phone by calling 8431 0441.

This coming weekend we have Division 3-6 returning on Saturday and our Division 1 and 2 sides playing on Sunday at Adelaide.

We received Christmas greetings from our overseas import for last year Per Sjors and his family. Their note indicates that at this time of year with a temperature of minus 30C in Leksand they only throw and hit indoors and have sent us a video to prove it!

I have also received information from Pat Burns including a Feature article in the North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) they did on his arrival to the United States. Pat plays for NIACC Trojan Baseball. Pat headlined a news article about an internal 'world series', however it ended after game 6 as the weather had become too cold and wet to continue! We hear Pat is missing the sun and beach!

Saturday-Sturt 3 defeated Golden Grove 1

Going into the weekend, we needed a special effort from everyone to try and keep our finals chances alive. We were missing a lot of personnel on the weekend with Junior Championships, Claxton shield and illness which just made it a greater challenge.
To everyone's credit, they all stood up. Craig Wright and Dan Lee took care of the pitching duties and kept the Grovers to 3 hits and 1 run. We took advantage of some GGCD mistakes to get a couple of runs across the plate and the win. Well done.
Hits - Passmore 2, Young, Carter, Holmes, Frogley.

Sunday-Sturt 1 defeated East Torrens 0
After playing in very difficult conditions the day before the challenge to play good baseball at ET was going to be a mental one. Again, the group responded magnificently and behind a pumped Ben Packer who threw 6 innings allowing 2 hits we again had a great win.
Will Frogley capped off a great win with a massive clutch hit to score the only run. Special thanks to Ali Young who caught both games on the weekend in shocking heat and picked up two hits again against ET.
This weekend could be one of the gutsiest performances I have seen from a Sturt group for a long long time. Self belief is starting to appear and we are continuing to do the little things. Great work.
Hits - Frogley 2, Young 2, Lee, Watts

Saturday-Sturt 11 defeated GGCD 5

The boys needed a couple of wins on the weekend to cement a top 6 spot and they did this in style. Will Wirth and Tom Winter took care of pitching duties and everyone chipped in offensively. Well done.

Sunday-Sturt 10 defeated ET 0
Shane Horne led the way magnificently on the Sunday game and the bats got going early which put the game beyond doubt in the first couple of innings.
This was a great effort from everyone that played for the 2s over the weekend and the results are reflective of the depth we have now at the club.
Special thanks to Matt Franke for sitting on the bench for both games - great work mate. Your efforts did not go unnoticed.

Christmas Edition Newsletter- Week 11

On behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club may I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! On Sunday night we had our Christmas party at the Sturt Baseball Club and it was great to see so many of you up there enjoying the festivities! At the Christmas function we honoured all of our State players and Tony Catt presented cheques on behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club to assist in off setting the cost of the trip. We were the second to top club in terms of the number of players selected to play at state level and this reflects well on our club! We wish all of our state players the very best of luck in the forthcoming state games to be played in January.
Last week was also a very sad week for our club with Player Life Member Warwick Stewart passing away and also Paul Mildren's grandmother passing in the same week. Our thoughts are with both these families at this very sad time.

Sturt 8 lost to Goodwood 11
An opportunity lost! Given the makeup of the opposition on the weekend we had a very good chance of knocking them off but were not good enough on the day. Our pitchers weren't quite on and that opened the door for a very strong offensive lineup to get going.
Offensively we started very well but went quiet for the second half which was disappointing.
The break comes at a great time for us. We have been playing some excellent baseball and now is a good chance to regroup, rest up and refocus on the task in the second half of the season. We need to remember that the fundamentals we have worked on so far have been working and we need to keep concentrating on these.
I am very proud of this group and their collective and individual improvement so far this season, but we shouldn't be satisfied with that. Bring on the second half!
I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy new year.
Hits - Turner 2, Carter 2 (HR), Roeger, Lee (HR), Brebner-Russ, Green, Holmes.

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)
Sturt 7 defeated Goodwood 6
A gutsy and important win for this group. After not displaying our best baseball and still coming away with a win shows this group has turned the corner and never gives up and is learning how to win.
The pitching staff of Horne, Mitchell and Teague did a great job again and were rewarded in the end with a victory. Some excellent clutch hitting to Stuart Crutchley and Dutchy were crucial to the win.
This also sets up a great second half for this group after a sluggish start.
This group needs to work on some of the little things such as concentration for 2 hours but that is the beauty of it - we will and can get better.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)Sponsored by:Hattam McCarthy Reeves Mastertax
Sturt 9 drew with Goodwood 9
Goodwood is always the team we like to measure ourselves against so coming away with a 9 all draw wasn't a bad result and considering the game and the spirit a fitting ending (although a win would have been bloody good).Pete Turner coming off a huge game in the 4s before us he doubled up and did a great job at 3rd and had a day out with the bat collecting hit 6th hit for the day going 3 for 4 , great job Pete. Nick Tuffnell's great year just keeps getting better and better going 4 for 4 with the bat including a massive double to centre then pitching a great game coming in in the 2nd pitching the next 5 2/3 , excellent job ( you don't need to come to training , if you do some higher team will certainly poach you!)We again were solid in the field just a couple of errors late otherwise a good day defensively. We still need to improve pitch selection as the middle 3 batters went 9 for 11 and the other 6 went 0 for 22, big difference. It is all about taking our opportunities both in the box and in the field. Everybody in all grades have a great xmas and new year, see you all in the new year.

Division 4 (Coaches: Stan Warrilow & Simon Gooley)
Sturt 12 defeated Goodwood 6
This was without a doubt our best game of the season and it was great to finish of the year with a win.
Defensively Pete Turner and Matt Mulryan both did a great job sharing the pitching duties.
Our infield was solid all day and made every play that came their way.
Offensively we racked up 15 hits for the day, an outstanding display of clutch hitting and power.
Kris Mcardle had a day out with 4 hits and a walk, Pete Turner and Frenchy both picked up 3 hits a well.
After scoring 6 in the first inning and 1 more in the second the bats went to sleep and the Indians came back at us but the bats came alive again in the last 3 digs which was very pleasing.
HITS – McArdle 4, Pete Turner, French 3, Yokoyama 2, Gooley, Mulryan,Warrilow 1

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke) Sponsored by: Ace Panel Systems (Major Sponsor) & Tony Colyer Pty Ltd (Team Sponsor)
DEFEATED Goodwood 3-2 (yesssss)
I’m baaack, with the Mattster out injured, the coach was able to take control of the team once again as it was obvious his Small assistant wasn't coping too well and was unable to get results. Zulu stepped back in and immediately a whole change came over the team and a Xmas win by the boys. The old master started on the mound and within a few pitches it was evident he shouldn’t have with several months of physio now required, but the plan was to keep the Indians at bay early and let the Bear do the rest. With all the hype of the last months being the arrival of Tofu and Wing Wang at the zoo, the Saints faithful eagerly awaited the arrival of their own Bear and he didn’t disappoint. Mr Lunnon was in complete control for 5 innings to shut the opposition down for a memorable win and a great display of controlled pitching, reminiscent of his halcyon days. Doc was ever reliable at the plate and stopped most things Zulu threw in the dirt, Small one had jelly legs at right for an unbelievable catch and more memorable turning circle that resembled the Bismark. Dave Lee took a catch at left, Pop made some plays at second and Sluga dropped the brick from his glove and made some good outs. Daisy also picked a few out of the red dust at first for some good completions. Pop smashed the ball all day but only had one safe, Smally batted well and Daisy had a great double.
Unfortunately the momentum stops for a while now with the holiday break although I felt we are on a roll now with 1 win in a row and knocking on the door of 8th spot and making the top sides a little nervous, ….. if we had more Bears we’d be really good …… we may have to look to China for some more recruits and open a bamboo factory ……….Merry Xmas to everyone and see you in 2010
Hits – Smally 2, Doc 1, Sluga 1, Bear 1, Daisy 1, Pop 1, FOT 1, Lee 1
Battery – Zulu, Bear to Doc

Goodwood Def Sturt 10-5
What a turn around from last week, we had an almost error free game with everyone fielding really well. We also had a number of good digs with the bat. We were head to head with Goodwood for most of the game and had a great battle!! Well done to Justin Richardson with some great pitching and Ben Cullen did an excellent job all day on 1st - But I must say well done to all of us as we all contributed to a great game.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)
Another glorious morning for baseball and the usual from the boys all looking like they had been out on the town the night before and still half asleep, but the good news was most of the boys had turned up on time for the warm up. So with ten boys for the day we got under way, starting with Harrison Wood on the mound after 3 weeks off I think. Being his first game back I was only going to throw him for about 60 pitches or a couple of innings but after 44 pitchers for 4 innings it was time to give some else a turn. Harrison pitched 3 K2's, 0 BB and 1 hit with 27 strikes and 17 balls. We then went to Dakota Mitchell for his second time on the mound for the 18's, and even though his father had mentioned that he did not throw well the day before he started the fifth innings with a pitch count of 40, again he was great throwing 31 pitches for 2 innings with 1 K2, 0 BB, 0 hits, 20 strikes and 11 balls. We then went to David Nicholas to finish off the game, He threw 2 innings for 33 pitches, 4 K2's, 2 BB, 1 hit, 19 strikes and 14 balls. Defensively the boys were great against a side that is struggling but we played our game and even though we had a couple of errors in the field, which did not hurt us on the score board, we were able to come away with the win. Sean Lamonby was fantastic behind the plate all day and was unlucky not to have thrown three out on the steal to second, he did get one for the day. The pitchers did their job throwing strikes and the field backed them up. Offensively we hit the ball well and ran the bases. We picked up 12 safe hits for the day and with some of the aggressive running Goodwood coughed up 7 errors. The final score line was 10-1 which was a great way to finish of the first half of the season before Christmas. Again the boys looked like they had enjoyed the game and now all we need to do is continue on with it in the new year. Once again our captain for the week Ben Young bought home the win to keep us with four wins from four captains.
Safe hits: Nicholas 3 (1 triple), Young and Brennan (1 double) 2 each and 1 each to Hollis, Papps (double), Lamonby, Mitchell and Small.
To the boys enjoy your Christmas and New Year break and come back with the same attitude you have been playing with so far and to all the Parents have an Merry Christmas and Happy New Year with your family.
See you all in 2010
MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Dean Franke) Sponsored by: Premier Trailers & National Tool Distributors
Defeated Woodville 13-5 in 5 innings
The pre game plan was to score 3 in the first dig but no plan to score 8 in the second which to the boys credit was an exceptional innings with nearly everyone getting on base. The entire line up either took walks or hit the ball hard and it made coaching so much easier. Mostly there was good discipline in the batters box choosing the right pitch to hit, however some missed signals and bad choices in base running marred what could have been the perfect game. Dylan and Sam pitched their 2 innings each well giving outs to the field and Matt closed out the game to the last 3 batters. Harrison worked hard behind the dish for his first catch for the season and did his job extremely well and with a bit more strength in his arm next year could find himself with a firm spot there. Macca had a day at short that he’d probably want to forget as well as 3 HPB’s that didn’t make him happy but it’s not every day you turn 15 Macca so enjoy, you have the scars to prove it and a triple that hit the left field wall and what should have been a double but called foul. Dylan with some improved concentration hit the ball hard twice, D walked 3 times and Jess and Harrison twice and Matt, batting with 1 hand was able to to get the ball over the infield when he had hoped to bunt each time at bat. Overall a very satisfying finish to 2009 for all the boys and families, they can all be proud of their efforts. Merry Xmas to all and a happy and prosperous new year, we’ll see you all in 2010. Next training will be the Wed before the first game back at 5pm at Sturt unless over 37 deg, then we’ll go to Woodlands.
PS – people that coach juniors should take a good hard look at themselves and the language and attitude that they bring to the game of minors, if you read our reports, you’ll know who this applies to, I was less than amused at what I experienced today, we concentrate on making Sturt junior baseball a pleasant and educational experience for our kids !
Hits – Lemon 1, Mitchell 1, Macbeth 1, Holt 2, Colmer 1, Franke 2
Battery – Holt 2 inns / 2H / 2 BB / 3 K2 / 0 ER, Roberts 2 inns / 4 H / 1 BB / 1 K2 / 1 ER, Franke 1 inns / 0H / 0 BB / 1 K2 / 0 ER to Lightbody

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Darren Stewart) Sponsored by: Bicton Constructions Pty Ltd (Major Sponsor)
The under 16/2 team defeated Henley & Grange Rams 8 – 6.
In a close game against a team that came down from the under 16/1’s, the lead changed several times until we finally took control. A good effort in the field by the boys and they backed up the effort with 8 hits.
As I said last week, they are starting to settle down and play as a team; however our base running and some thought processes still need some work.
Josh Tindall pitched the whole game and put in a terrific performance striking out 5 batters in his five innings stint.
A great individual effort by Sam Duffield saw him turn over a double play in the last innings to help set up the win.
Max Walker, a new recruit from Mitcham Primary School played his third game for the club and showed his continued improvement by getting his first hit and then took the match winning outfield catch.
Hitters were Miro Van Rensburg, Alex Renton (2), Sam Duffield, Max Guehrer, Lewis Brideson and Max Walker each one.
Thanks go to Max Guehrer for filling in from the under 14/1’s.
The team goes into the break sitting in third place, with 3 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw.

Under 14/1 Sturt Coach (Coach: Kris McArdle) Sponsored by: McArdle Family, Smith Motor Co & National Tool Distributors
Sturt 11 drew Woodville 11
Today we struggled to get the ball out of the infield while batting and our pitchers had big trouble throwing a strike with lots of pass balls while Woodville made the most scoring the first 8 runs to our nothing. Our third pitcher in two digs Errol Burns was thrown in the deep end and pitched well to get us out of a big hole and then Tyler Horrigan took to the mound and gave us some consistency and dried up Woodville's runs, but time was running out. We finally cracked the bats and scored 6 runs in the fifth but i thought it was too late as the end of this dig finished with only minutes left but the umpire called another dig. We then scored another 5 runs to put us up by 3 now showing some resilience with the bat,to Woodville's credit they hit the ball well and got the 3 runs to tie the game. Guys today we just didn't switch on until it was nearly to late but to your credit showed some real fighting spirit to came back from 8-0 down. We need to start all game with electricity and put the pressure back on the opposition. Great start to the season i am really enjoying coaching this side, enjoy the break.
Merry Xmas and happy new year to all.

Under U14/2 Sturt - (Coach: Jamie Bishop) Sponsored by: dfk Gray Perry
Sturt U14 "Sluggers" 15 defeated Kensington 8
A great way to finish the calendar year with a stellar performance up and down the line up from our full strength Sluggers outfit.
After squeaking in by 1 run last time, we were determined to show Kensington we have their measure!
Marvelous Matt led off and took a hard pitch to the back to get 1st … and then snuck around to 3rd before stealing home on a passed ball – and getting hit again!– this time on the helmet!
Several walks and steals saw another 2 runs in. 3-0 up.
RJ started on the mound with great control – a K2 to start, and then a pair of stylish put outs from 2nd by Damon, then RJ to his bro Tom on 1st. 3 up 3 down – 10 pitches!
Top 2nd and after a hiccup with a K2, we settled down to biz… in 1 innings, we saw - a single and a double to Wily Will, and hits to Angus, Josh, Fraser, Tommy and Matt to bring in the 7 runs mercy. 10 nil up!
RJ then continued on the hill – and this time took 8 pitches to stop them in order supported by the field with 3 catches – Damon took a good one at 2nd, as well as 2 breathtaking outfield catches – Jumping Josh let us know he was back from injury by covering right field with a deceptively gazelle-like gallop to swallow up a deep fly… and a bit later Awesome Angus in left stretched across his body to back-hand a left field shot that sailed down the 3rd base line!
Top 3rd and we were on gentleman’s rules at 10 up …and it was hard to pass up the steal and past ball opportunities.. but we did! We “only” brought in 3 runs this innings, including a magnificent triple to Angus! (2 walks, 1 triple and a single for the day!)
It was also time to rest RJ… even if he only threw 18 pitches! Fraser got some of his control back and chalked up a K2.. but they did sneak in 3 runs on 2 hits a walk and a catcher’s interference (bad luck Dan.. we’ll work on that!) We slowed down in the top of the last and managed to bring in another 2 runs with hits to RJ and Damon… and then Fraser and Matt closed them down after letting in another 5… but with the game well won it was hard to maintain total focus… no matter! A strong win that never let the Kensie Kittens even get a sniff!
So - A great first half season thankyou all … players and parents! And on behalf of all the Sluggers, thanks to all the usual suspects at Sturt for a great Xmas party last night – Zulu, Bruce, Phil and the gang! Best wishes to all for a great fest – see you in Gawler on Jan 24!

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Garry Wood)Sponsored by: TNY Management Consultants
Sturt 5 lost to Adelaide Angels 7
What a difference a week makes!
After basking in the glory of being undefeated (with a draw against WT) we came "crashing down to earth" with a very disappointing display against solid opposition in Adelaide.
With the coach still nursing a badly bruised leg (and a somewhat sore head), it was obvious that we were in for a long day when the boys arrived in "dribs and drabs" and hardly seemed awake before the game.
By the end of the first innings we were 5 nil down and it wasn't until the last innings that the boys decided to get involved in the game. They did manage to provide a mini comeback, but by then it was too late and we ran out of the time with the score line standing at 7 to 5.
As we have now reached the ½ way mark of the season I am pleased with the way the boys have developed and the improvement they have made in most areas of the game. We still have a long way to go but I feel confident that the boys can be very competitive in the second half of the season in the run up to the finals.
We have endeavored to give the boys an opportunity to play in as many positions as possible during the first 1/2 but after the break we will revert to the boys playing in positions where they are most suited and likely to play in the finals.
There were only a couple of highlights in this game which were provided by Stuart Brennan coming in and pitching 3 good innings from a tough position and Mitchell Lightbody who hit the ball hard and well. Brayden Richardson had his first game behind the mask and did a solid job.
Well done to the boys for their first ½ of the season and I look forward to seeing further development from this team in the New Year in the run up to hopefully playing finals baseball.
May I wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year.
To those boys who have made the various State Teams well done and good luck.
Go the Saints !!!

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young)
Little League 2-Saints 15 defeated Little League 2-Sturt 9 On a beautiful Sunday morning and the Sturt ground looking a treat we assembled for the Second Showdown of the season. We knew it would be a game both sides very much would want to win. Our first time at bat was brief with excellent pitching by Ethan Egglestone and two good catches seeing us retired without scoring. Jack started on the mound for us and took a little while to find his zone but strong batting and some missed chances in the field saw us give up the 5 runs. 5-0 down bottom first and the boys a bit dejected. Good teams fight well when they are down and that is what they did. Our second at bat saw some more excellent pitching from Thomas and although we got some good hits we managed just the one run courtesy of Jack. Harrison produced another excellent performance on the mound and along with an excellent play by Corey at first we saw three up, three down. Our third dig saw us finally get on the board significantly with some hits and aggressive base running to get the maximum five. Cameron came to the mound and threw strikes but again good batting and missed opportunities in the field saw the Saints now up 10-6. Our last batting performance saw some hits and a few walks to get some runs on the board but the rally halted with Cameron out charging the catcher! Jamie D gave us another very solid performance on the mound but a series of good hits saw the Saints a deserving winner at 15-9. Well done on a great first half of the season. To win the tight ones we need to be alert and take our chances in the field. Thanks to all the great group of dads and mums who help on match day and training - see you in January.

Newsletter Week 10

We were treated to another great weekend of baseball with our Senior teams in Division 1 and 2 both winning nail biters! Both teams have been on a winning streak and we hope that next weekend they can continue this form before the Christmas break. Our Division 1 and 2 sides are now sixth on the ladder which is an outstanding result! We will need to check the record books to see the last time our Division 1 side was in such a healthy position at this time of the year! Our Juniors have also continued to perform very well.

Next weekend proves to be another big weekend of baseball with the Claxton Shield returning to Norwood Oval on Friday night and then continuing with two games on Saturday. You can view all the game times on our Events Diary.

Unfortunately last weekend in Sydney, South Australia lost its first series of the 2010 Dominos Claxton Shield season, losing the deciding game three, 6-5 to NSW at Blacktown on Saturday. In Game 1 our own Paul Mildren continued his brilliant form pitching 7.2 innings, giving up 11 hits and no walks while striking out five batters. You can read full match reports at the SA Baseball website.

On Sunday we have our traditional Christmas Party at the club commencing at 6.00 pm. This is a great event particularly for Juniors but in the past all members of the Club have enjoyed the night! Sturt 7 defeated Kensington 5
Another step forward for this young group as we stormed out of the blocks with 6 runs in the first inning only to get shut down (once again) by the knuckle baller.
We knew Kensies would keep coming back and they chipped away at the lead all game. Fortunately we hung tough at the end and came away with a very satisfying result.
Craig Wright battled threw 5 innings and was slightly below his best but that is what happens and you have to learn to work through it, which he is doing better and better each week. Ben Packer always brings emotion to the table which is great in tight games (as long as it is pointed in the right direction!) He pitched very well to close the game out and has certainly developed a lot of self belief this season.
Offensively we spread the load which was pleasing. Josh Green has really been a great story for us this year and he continually plays to his strengths and it has been great to have him in the lineup.
Keep doing the little things.
Hits - Green 2, Turner 2, Lee 2, Frogley 2, Day, Winter, Holmes, Brebner Russ.

Division 2 Sturt 1 defeated Kensington 0
This was a must win game and the boys hung in there all day and got the bickies in the end.
Full credit must go to the 3 pitchers to shutout the Kensington lineup. Shane Horne had his best outing for the season, Rick Mitchell just keep getting it done and Tom fireman Teague gets stronger each outing.
It was nice for one of these close ones to go our way and we need to use this as a springboard for the second half of the season.

Sturt 5 drew with Kensington 5
After a good performance last week narrowly going down to Woodville by 2 runs we needed to back up again with another good effort and we did tying with Kensington 5-5, with what was a very well spirited game of baseball, well done to both teams, great example. With the U/16s having a bye it was a good opportunity to give Dylan Holt and Matt Franke a chance to pitch in a higher grade.
Dylan got off to a shaky start but after a little chat he came back to pitch very well giving up just the 2 runs in his 2 digs. Matt Franke came in for his first pitch in Div 3 and bang bang he had 2 outs in 6 pitches but as we know the 3rd out is the hardest, Matt for a 14yr old did a great job on the hill just giving up 3 runs in his 2 digs, well done the both of you, you both should be proud.
Nick Tuffnell found himself in unfamiliar territory not having to start and came in to throw the last 2 digs and did a fantastic job just giving up the one hit in 2 digs, good job Nick. We only gave up 5 hits for the day but 8 walks, the are the ones that hurt. In the box we were alot better collecting 7 hits & 3 walks, we are looking better each week.
The stand out for the day was Cameron Thorpe collecting 2 for 4 on base 3 times stealing 5 bases, they just had no answer for his wheels, defensively he had an outstanding day at short stop. Ryan Mattschoss also had a great day lifting his season ave over 300 getting himself 2 good hits. Dale Martens also roped one to right field,Michael Robinson's season with the bat now seems to have started getting himself another hit, Brian McGuinness also collected another hit. The boys were very good in the field not giving up ANY errors, well done guys, lets get the job done next week Goodwood @ Goodwood.

Division 4 (Coaches: Stan Warrilow & Simon Gooley)
I spoke to the team before the game about being aggressive in the box.
I wanted us be more of a contact side and reduce our high tally of strikeouts.
After 7 innings of baseball our strikeout total was 1, which is a good sign.
We were solid up until the 5th inning where it was a 2-1 ball game then the wheels fell off.
The Cardinals hit the ball hard and we couldn’t come up with a couple of double play chances.
Throw in a few timely bleeders and that was that.
Some positives were a couple of hits from Trent Small who is coming along nicely and a huge drive to the right field wall from Kris Mcardle.
Defensively Matt Mulryan made some nice plays at 3rd and did a good job coming in to pitch with loaded bases and closing out the inning.
It was nice to have a few on the bench this week too.
I am really looking forward to playing Goodwood this week and finishing this year with a win.
HITS – Warrilow, Small 2, Yokoyama, Mcardle, Saint 1

Error Error Error MERCIED was the form for the day and after five innings we were done, losing 19-6.
Not to much to say really on the defensive side after the first innings and with a score line of 3-4 one run down, from there the wheels feel of the infield from our third baseman for the day. Our pitchers of Rocket, Rat and Smally was great throwing strikes but GGCD hit the ball hard and to the spaces. On the offensive side we are getting better and better each week hitting the ball and being more selective for the right strike. The only thing that is killing us at the moment is our defensive part of the game and if we can improve on that with some training we will start winning some games. We will hopefully get our coach ZULU back this week for the last game before Christmas and playing Goodwood at home should be good.
Hits: Small 2, Burns M, Taylor, Colyer, Young, Trembath 1 each.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)
It was another lovely day at the club with the sun shining and 3 games to be played. The U18's playing Northern Districts were looking to get the triple header of to a good start and had a fight on their hands from the opposition, who are currently with out a win. It was a real pitchers game from the first innings with both teams only scoring 1 run each at the bottom of the 5 innings, Dakota Mitchell (U16) came out for his first pitch in the under 18's this season and with a pitch count of 90 we needed him to throw deep into innings. He finished in the 6th throwing 5 2/3 innings with 8 K2's, 5 BB and 3 hits to his name. An outstanding performance from him. Dakota had thrown his count (93pitches 54strikes & 39balls) and we bought in Ben Young to finish of the innings and game for us, throwing 1 1/3 with 1 K2, 0 BB and 1 hit.
So at the top of the 6th and with the score tied we held them to 0 and our bats came to life with a change of pitchers from Northern Districts to score 3 putting us in front 4-1. Northern Districts came out for what looked like their last at bat and Ben Young held to 0 runs again, with our last at bat we ended up scoring 5 to win the game 9-1. It was a great tight game to start with with both pitchers dominating the game and we were able to go with it when the pitchers did change. Our defense was good with a couple of errors but they did not hurts us on the score card, but we need to eliminate them. Our captain for this week was Sam Hollis and with this win he keeps our record of 3 captains 3 wins. Thanks to Jackson Brebner-Russ, Tom Teague, Dakota Mitchell and Matthew MacBeth for coming out and helping out. It was nice to get the win and start what turned out to be 3 wins for the club on the day U18's Div 2 and Div 1.

0 0 0 0 1 0 0 Northern Districts

The under 16/2 team drew 12 all with East Torrens / Dodgers.
In a see sawing game the lead changed four times in the six innings played. A good effort in the field saw the boys only make one error and they backed up the effort with 10 hits, scoring in each innings again this week.
They are starting to settle down and play as a team; however our base running still needs some work.
Josh Tindall started on the mound and put in another terrific performance for his three innings. Henry Brennan came up from the under 14’s to help us out with numbers and pitched two innings over the full distance. Henry showed he could throw well picking up 4 K2’s once he put the effort in. Shaun Wright, a new recruit from Mitcham Primary School threw one innings and collected 2 K2’s. It was a great effort for someone playing his third game of baseball and for someone who is still eligible for Under 14.
Another new player to the club is Shea Clark. In his first game for Sturt he caught all day and his glove work and blocking were superb.
Hitters were Lazar Losic (3), Sam Duffield (2) and Josh Tindall, Shea Clark, Shaun Wright, Miro Van Rensburg and Alex Renton each one.

Sturt 7 Defeated Adelaide 4
We started the score board ticking by a massive 2 run homer from Max Guehrer. Everyone hit the ball well and by the end of the 3rd we were 7-2 up. Unfortunately that was the end of our scoring when Adelaide put on their 6ft plus pitcher (wild thing)and to the boys credit they battled hard putting runners on but to no prevail. Defensively we play very well in particular Errol Burns catch at left field in the last and then hitting his cut-off and nearly getting the runner at home, Tyler Horrigan played a great game at third with two very good outs on slow rollers. The pitchers did a great job Tyler Lunnon pitching 3 superb dig giving up only 2 runs, Jayden Trembath and Tyler Horrigan finished the game off for us. Guys we are travelling well but still have plenty of work to do on the track, lets not get ahead of ourselves as there is still a long way to go. Lets go get Woodville this week and with a win we could snatch top spot. Keep it up boys and see you all on Tuesday.

Sturt U14 "Sluggers" 9 defeated by GGBC 11
With Flinders in a state of “transition” it was all hands to the pumps as we pre-planned the simultaneous arrival of the bases, tape measures, cones, scorers shades table, chairs, umpires …oh yes, and the team!
(When you know again you only have a bare 9 on paper, it’s always a nervous wait as you count and recount the Sturt shirts leading up to 2pm! - …and when you hear a thud and then tears during warm up, your blood goes a little cold too!) - fortunately again, 9 players ready to go… (even though RJ had an ice pack to his jaw after a nasty hopper!)
RJ took to the hill… with the legend Martin "Frogg" Foster in his green umpiring shirt peering over his right shoulder in between coughing and spluttering thru a 3rd degree flu - but still he battled on "because I said I’d be there!"
2 routine and well played outs to 1st followed by a walk and a hit before dispatching them for 1 run in. I knew it would be a tough day for the pitchers on both sides… so I asked the boys to “make him throw a strike before we start swinging”… but Matt and RJ knew better (… and 2 easy plays by 1st to retire them both let them know why I wear the coach label!) Despite a walk and a good hit by Fearless Fraz, we couldn’t score.
RJ hit his straps in the 2nd and stopped them for no runs with 2 K2’s and a put out to 1st. Bottom 2, and Wild Will spanked a hard shot to 3rd to get on.. and then the lads listened and waited for the strikes…. And drew 4 walks in a row! Fraser then spanked his 2nd outfield hit to bring in a couple more and took the score to 5-1. RJ returned for the 3rd, but after hitting the 1st batter and giving up a hit, he was on borrowed time – but he rallied to strike another one out before a walk… and on come Mighty Matt to close it out. A little loose to start, he managed to stop them with 3 more coming in. Bottom 3rd, and the lads picked up where they left off Will slapped another safe hit to 3rd (and he said he couldn’t run with his sore knee!) and Dyno-Dan and then Matt both spanked one each to bring in another 4 runs… sitting pretty at 9-4….or so we thought!
Top 4th, and Matt had some troubles with a walk, a hit batter and then a double as well as some shocking fielding and "colorful" umpiring calls! … so I turned to Fraser - but he had troubles too, and with a sloppy field supporting, the max 7 runs came in! No worries, 9-11 and we’ve been scoring ok! 3rd and 1st occupied with none out it looked like we were going to be ok… but no! We died on the vine as they say! 11-9 lost!

We don’t like learning lessons the hard way… but I think all got the message – NEVER give them a chance to get back in it! Shut them down from the 1st and grind them into the dirt… or they will come back!
Thanks to all for all the work and coordination! One more to go before the Rotund Red fella appears – Kensies at 10am… a good one to win and finish on a high!

Sturt 12 defeated Goodwood Indians 3
Well the day began badly when I was put to the ground by a return ball off the bat of Henry Wood during the warm up and had to spend most of the game breaks with ice on my leg !
Henry's reward was to pitch his first game in 2 years which he did quite well for the first 2 and a bit innings before being replaced by Zach Evreniadis who did a great job for the remainder of the game.
The boys continue to play good quality solid baseball while still having plenty of room for improvement. Unfortunately I again have to mention the lack of support from teammates while in the field and when we are batting so the boys will find me sitting with them on the bench this week so we can work on this part of the game together.
I must mention Braydon Richardson who has improved a lot since the beginning of the season and knows he still has areas to improve upon but is getting better and better week by week.
All boys again contributed in some way and it was a comfortable win in the end against a good team in Goodwood.
Well done boys keep up the great work!
Go the Saints

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young)
Little League 2-Sturt 12 defeated West Torrens 5
This was our second game against West Torrens, the first time round was our only 5 innings game to date. That game we got up by just the one run. We started with Nikolai drawing a walk and then a single to Jack and a centre field double to Harrison. A good come back by their pitcher kept us to just the one run. Nikolai then threw a 13 pitch innings to K2 one batter and have two good outs by the field, a 6-3 play by Jamie D and Corey and then a great outfield catch by Jack. In our second at bat some errant pitching and good hits by Matt, Nikolai, Harrison and Jamie saw us get the 5 runs. Next up Jamie D gave his second pitching performance for the year and retired their team with just 19 pitches to keep them scoreless. Some good pitching and fielding by the opposition in our third batting effort saw us quickly back on the field and Jack to the mound. He showed his continued good form to keep them hitless and scoreless. Our fourth bat saw Jack get his third hit for the day and some aggressive base running allow us another two runs. Harrison came to close the game and pitched so well that he had three up and three down so we had time to go a 5th innings. Both sam and Mac got good hits, Sam unlucky to be out on a good play and Mac a good ground ball to the right of short to make an easy single. Hits again by Jack and Harrison saw us get another 4 runs to lead 12-0. We let them close a little on the last trip to the field as Will threw some great strikes but the radar was a bit off at times. Overall a very solid 12-5 win over West Torrens at their home - well done boys. Now for the big Derby at Sturt this Sunday.

Hits Jack B 4, Harrison 3, Nikolai 1, Mac 1.

Sturt 11 def Glenelg 7
What a great effort to defeat the top team. We started from the word go with the bats, knocking in five runs. Hits win games and its very important to get off to a good start! Thomas O'Connell pitched the first dig giving up three runs with two stikeouts. The second innings was good with us scoring a further run, Ethan Egglestone pitched very well with the one strikeout and giving up no runs with a solid effort! We were scoreless in the third, Artimus Dow threw, giving up one run with two stikeouts! The fourth the bats were inforce again scoring five more runs, to really finish off an excellent offensive effort! Nick Evereniadis pitched the last to finish the game off. He got himself in a bit of a hole early giving up three runs with no outs, but then dug deep to get three strikeouts with good persistence!
A very good effort allround. We have one more game before the XMAS break, it would be fantastic to go out with a win! Thank you to all the parents who help out on Sunday.
HITS: Conner Dyer; Thomas O'Connel; Ethan Egglestone 3; Arty Dow 2; Connor Mc Clure; Isaak Dangerfield; Yannic Norrito 1.
