Newsletter Week 2

This week our Junior Teams commenced the season and our A Grade side had a great win at home on Sunday!
In what has now become a tradition our first A Grade game at home was preceded with a moving ceremony at Home Plate.

You can view photos of the opening on the front page of our website!

After welcoming everyone to the game, I commented on the magnificent work that had been done by the A Grade boys under the direction of Tony Catt together with assistance from Bruce Packer and David Lee in working up our diamond into the magnificent condition it is currently in!
I also acknowledged our key sponsors Ord Minnet, Bicton Constructions, APS Ace Panel Systems and Freshwater Systems. Our club is very grateful for your sponsorship of our club!
I then talked about the central vision of our club for the 2009/10 season and was pleased to talk about this vision. I am very grateful to Bruce Packer who prepared the words and I feel that they are so well written that I reproduce them in full below:

"There are many types of pride.
Pride in one's self, pride in one's achievements, and pride in one's possessions, to name a few.
It is my vision that we make this a season of Sturt Pride.
That we should exhibit pride in our club, our team, our team-mates, and ourselves, in every best possible way.
By showing our pride, we show those around us that we have worth, and that our team and our club have value.
As players we should do our absolute best when playing the game. This gives us pride in our achievements, and gives respect to our team-mates and our Club.
As club members, if we respect our club, clubhouse and grounds, then we demonstrate our pride in these entities.
Every one of us should have a goal this season to improve as players, to improve our Club and to raise the standard of our club's reputation both within Baseball and in our community. By commitment to such a goal, we will experience the improvements we seek and the satisfaction we desire."

Bruce Packer then sang the National Anthem and Hall of Famer and Life Member Noel Gully threw the first pitch. Noel tells me that it is 61 years this year when he threw his first pitch in A Grade, so it was something very special that we had Noel throw the first pitch! Thank you Noel!

A reminder for all newcomers to the Club you can find a list of key contacts including all Coaches, Managers and Officials on our website. Go to the top menu and click on about>people. It is very important if you are unable play or attend training that you advise your coach or manager as soon as possible.

I also need to remind all of our senior players and junior players and their parents of the extreme importance of paying your subscription fees. The Club works on volunteers and for those who have not paid their fees, this results in addition work from your fellow members who have to chase these fees. If you haven't yet paid your fees, please make every effort to do so before we actually make contact with you! You can pay online or see Sonia or Rosanna behind the bar to make your payment, where we have available EFTPOS facilities. If you are not sure of the fee to pay you can check online

Division 1 (Coach: Tony Catt) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)
Sturt 4 defeated East Torrens 3
Concentrating on the little things all week at training finally paid off with an excellent win over a club that has had the wood on us in recent years.
It was fantastic to have Paul Mildren back on the mound for the club and he threw 5 strong innings before handing the ball to an improving Ben Packer. Ben pitched beautifully to finish the game with the Saints in front.
On the offensive side it was great to have Dan Lee back in the line up with 3 hits and Sam Day with 2 hits.
Great game but it is over now and we need to concentrate on 'doing our best' again next weekend.
Hits - Lee 3, Day 2, Turner, Green, Carter, Passmore, Holmes.

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)
Sturt 5 drew with East Torrens 5
Another game slips from the jaws of victory with errors at the wrong times costing us another win.
Both Craig Wright and Rick Mitchell pitched well enough to contain the ET bats but slip ups in the field cost us a couple of runs that ultimately made the difference.
This team is doing the hard things but can't yet execute some of the fundamentals. That has to be where the improvement must be made in the week ahead.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
Sturt lost to Goodwood 14-1
A very disappointing result losing 14-1, it was our best chance to finally knock this very successful team off with many of their guns missing, but we fell very short. We were left without a pitcher for the game so Dylan Holt from the 16s stepped up and did a fantastic job throwing 3 1/3 digs , he did what I asked and throw us strikes and that he did! We just didn't take our chances in the field, and with a team like Goodwood you need to take even the half chances. Ryan Matschoss came in for a dig, thanks for the effort. Michael Robinson put in an outstanding effort catching all day in which he did a great job and then coming in to pitch the last, well done Michael a good day of baseball. Not only didn't we take our chances in the field we were even worse in the batters box AGAIN! Collecting only 2 hits for the day and they were one after another, one was to Harison Wood who smoked one to left. We need some massive improvement as our goal IS to play finals, new season starts this week, lets start again!

Division 4 (Coaches: Stan Warrilow & Simon Gooley)
Sturt defeated Goodwood 10-0
A slightly overcast morning greeted us as we took on the Indians from down the road.
If we were in England and had won the toss we would have put them into bat.
We welcomed back 2 of last year's players Matt Saint and Gools and started the game with a full team which was nice.
Matt Saint started on the hill and went 4 digs for one hit, absolutely outstanding first outing for the year.
He was then replaced by Pete (junior) Turner for the last 2 digs who also only gave up 1 hit, another outstanding job.
Our defence was as solid as I've seen for a couple of years with no errors and some great plays, special mention goes to Kingsley (senior) Turner for a couple of solid outs.
We scored 3 in the first, 1 in the second, 1 in the 4th and 5 in the 6th to win via the mercy rule 10 nil.
Everyone contributed with the bat in some way or another which as pleasing.
Well done to Cameron Thorpe who picked up 3 hits in his first game with us.
Looking forward to next week, and another solid effort from the boys.
Hits - Warrilow, Thorpe 3, Gooley, P.Turner 2, Yokoyama, K.Turner, A Sincock 1.

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke) Sponsored by:APS Ace Panel Systems (Major Sponsor)
Saints Div 5 took on the might of the Korean Red army (yes they all wore Korean uniforms) at Norths on Sat going down 7-3 for our international showdown. When we arrived they were in the tunnels hitting with a pitching machine and when we left after the game they were doing infield / outfield drills much to the amazement and amusement of our otherwise dedicated Saints team (just way too serious). Albeit for the scoreline, on the field there were more fireworks than Sydney Harbour on New Year's Eve with a couple of heavy collisions where the opposition had no idea where to position themselves with Shrek and Sluga knocking over a couple of the Reds, with Shrek requiring some dental work in the near future. Apart from a 5 run score by the opposition in the first where we were unable to convert some outfield flies to catches, the game was close for the rest of the day. Sluga pitched fantastically all game. We went in without Smally (on the Gold Coast trading for GC17), Bear with a cold (go figure), and RAT (drinking saki in Japan), our OUTS list was bigger than the INS, however some notable returns with Rocket Ron Taylor, ZULU, Dan Burns and Bruce Winter "FOT" ("Father of Tom" - making his debut - who made a dubious but spectacular double play) and Matt Franke who hit well without luck. DOC again scrambled in the dirt at the plate and fortunately Dave Lee didn't have a fly ball. We do need to put the ball out of the infield guys if we are to get on the scoreboard. We battled hard but obviously youth won out again and there was also the oppositions 10th man we had to deal with with Korean waves and chants all day. Next week beckons again !

Division 6 (Coach: Dave Smith)
Northern Districts defeated Sturt Div 6 14-5
A fantastic effort by all today, well done to Justin Richardson who threw really well for the whole game and proved himself as reliable pitcher. Good work by new comer Jason Cullen also, did a great job on 1st base for us. Our batting has also improved and will get better as we go - Looking forward to next week.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)
East Torrens 16 d Sturt 6

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Dean Franke)
East Torrens defeated Sturt 6-5
In a heartbreak finish we went down 5-6 to ET. Unfortunately prior to the game plans A,B and then C had to come into play through players playing in higher grades which turned out to be the difference in the end. In what was a tough struggle all day, it went down to the wire and with some missed opportunities early where we could have put more scoreboard pressure on the opposition we failed to capitalise. Some poor pitch selection in the count, not looking for or understanding signals and baserunning let us down whereas our defence overall was pretty good. Dakota pitched well to start the game with a high strike ratio and Bradley blocked everything at the plate, Macca was cool and calm in the box and the field, Derek played well at first and Jess was solid at centrefield with Matt F picking up 2 hits as well as finishing off the game. Hard work on the track and we will improve on today, which is what its all about. I think our best is better than today.
Hits - Schnorr 1, MacBeth 2, Franke 2, Mitchell 1, Losic 1
Battery - Mitchell, Franke to Trembath

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Darren Stewart) Sponsored by: Bicton Constructions Pty Ltd (Major Sponsor)
9-0 Win due to Forfeit!

Under 14/1 Sturt Coach (Coach: Kris McArdle)
Sturt 13 defeated Woodville 6
Great start to the season hitting the ball right through the line-up. I asked the team to bat aggressively and that's what they did getting 6 runs in the first dig. The runs slowed down as the game moved on but we always looked in control. We still have a lot of work to do on our fielding, missing some cut-offs . But there were some good signs with Charlie Goldworthy taking a superb catch at right field and Jordan McArdle also taking a diving catch at Short Stop and all in all we played a solid game defensively. Henry Brennan pitched well for the first two digs and Jayden Trembath pitched solid to finish the game off. Guys we need to work on playing the game right to the finish i felt we rode the game out towards the end and could have finished a lot stronger. See you all Tuesday 4:20pm sharp so we can get a solid 1.5hr work in as West Torrens is not going to be a push over this week.
Big thankyou to Mark Goldsworthy.
Good work guys keep it up , let go get WT this week.

Under U14/2 Sturt - (Coach: Jamie Bishop)
Sturt U14 "Sluggers"(Twos) (8) defeated Southern Districts (4)
What a great way to start the season – an enthusiastic bunch of kids and strong parent support came on time and ready to play on a beautiful day at Glenelg!
Volunteers abounded, and the warm-up, scoring, gear management and paperwork were all done like a well drilled machine – and in addition, as home team(at Glenelg?)
We were fortunate to secure the umpiring services of Bulls VP Martin "Bullfrogg" Foster which rounded out the spectacle of the day!
Reuben started us up with 2 reasonable innings and gave up 2 runs - the control will come and there were many positives!
Fraser then took the mound and had a great day to pitch the rest of the game – including 7 strike outs!
The field did a great job with good concentration and attitude – and Dan and then Will did well behind the plate!
In the offense, our bats worked well up and down the order to craft a well constructed win.
Singles from Reuben, Fraser, Matthew, Tommy
2 singles from William, Daniel, and our new recruit and rookie Josh who had a GREAT 1st game!
Many thanks to all the parents and supporters – I have a feeling we’re going to have a great season – stay tuned!

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Garry Wood)
Sturt 11 defeated Kensington 2
The team consists of the following players : Simon Adkins , Tyson Ottaway , Max Staggs , Stuart Gardiner , Henry Wood , Mitchell Lightbody, Zach Evreniadis, Jack Dawson, Stuart Brennan, Peter Littleyuile, Braden Richardson and Brodie Macbeth. Safe hits as follows : Wood and Lightbody 3 each, Ottaway 2 and Gardiner , Evreniadis , Brennan , Macbeth and Richardson 1 each.
Welcome to the new season and our first game which I am pleased to report was a successful one.
It is great to see so many talented young baseballers showing some early form with both bat and ball.
With 12 boys in the squad we have chosen to roster 1 boy off every week starting game 2 to ease the pressure on the coach, players and parents. We are fortunate to have a number of quality pitchers and catchers so we believe the system will work quite well.
Game 1 we lined up with some of the "old" boys and some of the new who were having their first game of baseball.
Mitchell Lightbody pitched a great first 2 innings and was well caught by Henry Wood behind the mask. Peter Littleyuile then pitched well for a couple of innings before being replaced by Zach Evreniadis who closed out the game well. Pleasing was the fact that all the boys contributed in some way to the end result but more importantly I think realised that ALL positions whether infield or outfield are important and that we have a role to play on nearly every pitch whether it be backing up or verbal support etc.
Well done boys keep training hard and we will practice our hitting and fielding on Wednesday night.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Glenn Young)
Little League 2-Sturt 10 defeated West Torrens 6
We all headed off to Flinders with a little apprehension and a team of players who between them had not a single game of baseball experience.
Not only that but our first opponent was West Torrens who always put a good team on the diamond. Jack Bennetts started on the mound and settled the team's nerves by not giving up any runs in our first defensive innings. Although we got some good hits out of Nikolai, Corey, Jack and Cameron we were denied any runs by some good fielding.
Harrison Knuckey held the West Torrens boys scoreless in their second dig and teamed well with Cameron at catcher to get an important out at home plate. Our second offensive inning saw us get two on the board with a solid ground ball by Harrison and then a cracking left field hit by Will. We then lost our concentration a little and gave the West Torrens team some easy runs by careless throws around the diamond making it hard work for our third pitcher Nikolai. A solid batting inning that saw us score 5 runs put us back in front - good hitting by Cameron, Harrison and Will. We were then able to hold the West Torrens boys out in the 5th with Jamie Dayman closing, Mac showing how to play 2nd base and the game ending with a sensational catch at first by our little dynamo Sam Bennetts. Great 10-6 win and solid team effort. Big raps to all the boys who pitched so well on their first go at this position. Lets keep it going boys.

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Darren French)
Little League 2 - Saints 14 defeated Hawks 10
First match of the season and a good win.
Hawks didn't have much pitching so alot of the boys were walked (many with out seeing a strike). We did get some excellent hits Thomas O'Connell (stand up double and a single), Conor McClure (3), Gavin Barret, and Matthew Johnston.
In the field we have some good signs, Connor Dyer caught the first two pitchers well and Eli Egglestone caught very well in his first game. Conor McClure and Nick Evreniadis both made good plays at first. We didn't have a lot of other action. When the ball was hit to the outfield the boys chased and got the ball back (remember boys once you have the ball get it back to the infield or pitcher quickly - don't hold it). The infield worked quite well (when tested) making puts out at first (2) and home plate.
Matthew Johnston pitched well, striking out the first 3 batters and conceding no runs. Ethan Egglestone pitched well - he conceded hits which meant his throwing was on the money - he gave up 6 hits (alot were catchable), 1 walk and struck out 2 giving up 4 runs. Thomas O'Connell pitched for the time ever and did a very good job. He gave up 2 walks, 1 hit and struck out 2, conceding 2 runs. Ty Llangford pitched our last dig and while he struggled with accuracy he did collect a strike out (walked 7, 1 hit) and bought the infield into play (put out at home and first) he conceded 4 runs.
Overall an excellent effort. The boys played well.

Newsletter Week 1

Welcome to the 2009-10 Baseball Season! This past weekend all of our Senior teams (Divisions 1-6) and Under 18 kicked off the season! Unfortunately it was a hard day at the office for our Senior teams who all started the season with a loss! The Under 18's did us proud winning a nail biter at Golden Grove 4-3!

Our Junior Teams- Little League, Under 14 and Under 16 will start their season this weekend.

Baseball SA have released the draw for Junior Games today and these have been placed on our website for your convenience!

You can view the next three games on the front page of our website or you can view all the games for a particular team by going to the top menu of our website and clicking on teams and then select senior or junior and then click on schedules and then select your team! It is also worth double checking the draw on the Baseball SA website as they sometimes change the game schedule on their website without letting us know!!

On behalf of the club I wish all of junior teams the very best of luck for the season.

On Sunday our Division 1 and 2 together with Under 18 will be playing at home on Norman Reserve. As has become a tradition, we will have a special opening to the season, so please make every effort to get down to the Club next Sunday!

Following our Annual General Meeting earlier this year it was decided that our Annual Report should be placed online so that members who were not able to attend the AGM could still view the report. A new section for Annual Report has now been created on our website. You can find the 2009-09 Annual Report by going to the top menu and clicking on about>annual reports. I would like to say a big thank you to Bruce Packer who does a magnificent job producing such a professional and high quality Annual Report.

In addition in the same about section, the Club has also introduced a Policy area, you can access Policies by going to about>policies. The Sturt Baseball Club as a member of Baseball SA is essentially guided by their policies however the Senior Committee thought that it was important for the Club to also have some local Policies on selected topics. The first of these policies is on Illicit Drug use. The Club has a zero tolerance for illicit drug use and the Senior Committee felt it was important to take a pro-active approach and develop a local policy. All major sports now have such a policy.

Sturt 1 lost to Golden Grove 10
The scoreline did not clearly reflect the closeness of this game for much of the day.
The end result boiled down to one aspect - GGCD took their chances when they were there - we did not. That being said we created enough scoring opportunities which is half the battle, which just could take them.
Defensively, we were outstanding again. The boys have worked hard on this aspect of our game and this is getting better every week. Offensively we couldn't buy a clutch hit.
Ben Packer and Will Wirth showed very promising signs for the season ahead on the hill. David Carter led the way with the bat and demonstrated he is going to be very dangerous in Division 1 yet again.
The end result was not what we were looking for but there is much improvement in this side which is the exciting part. Make sure you get to Norman Reserve this week to support us for our first home game.
Hits - Carter 2, Turner, Roeger, Faehse.

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)
Sturt 5 lost to Golden Grove 6
After falling behind a couple of times throughout the match, the boys dug deep and tied the game on a Sam Day clutch hit in the last. Unfortunately GGCD scored the winning run in the bottom of the last innings. Craig Wright and Rick Mitchell pitched very well but unfortunately the field let them down a few too many times. Once again, this was one that got away but it is a long season and the boys will get a lot better.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
Sturt 2 lost to Kensington 8
Not the start to the season we hoped going down 8-2 but there were a lot of good signs. Telmo did an outstanding job on the hill pitching 4 digs with 8 strike outs , he also collected our only hit. Defensively we were very solid with our juniors doing a great job, Harrison Wood doing a great job at left field , Trent Small for his 1st game in Division 3 was very good at 2nd base , Dakota wasn't letting anything past at Short Stop getting dirty, Michael Robinson again was a rock behind the dish taking a massive hit to get an out. We are not going to win many games of baseball with only 1 hit. We know what we need to work on so boys get to training and lets work on them!

Division 4 (Coaches: Stan Warrilow & Simon Gooley)
Sturt 5 lost to Kensington 15
The sun was shining, the bees were buzzing and almost half of our team was suspended, injured or sick.
Not the best start to the season however the show must go on.
So with 8 players including a new bloke who had never played before and a 15 year old kid on the hill it was play ball.
Three up three down in the first inning for the saint’s hitters and then the fun began.
The Kensington boys found the gaps in the outfield (gee that’s a surprise with only 2 fielders) and scored a couple of runs.
The next inning was a repeat of the first and I began to wonder if would actually hit one into the outfield.
That honour went to Tokashi (TK) on his second trip to the plate in the 3rd inning.
We finally got going in the top of the 4th inning thanks to a lead of double from yours truly, followed by a HPB to Oscar Serrano our Venezuelan import followed by a lovely crack from Pete (junior) Turner which scored our 1st run for the year.
Kingsley (senior) Turner then hit a nice ground ball to score another run and we were on our way.
Dylan Holt did a great job for us on the hill for 3 and 1/3 innings but was soon up to his junior pitch limit. Yours truly came in from the outfield and after about 15 warm up pitches managed to get the next to hitters out.
It was about this time Brian McGuiness came in as our 9th player which was much appreciated and things started to look normal again.
Pete (junior) Turner then took to the hill for the last 2 innings and Serrano went behind the dish.
We finally went down by the mercy rule 15-5 which was always going to happen after giving away such a big early lead.
I was pleased that the boys showed some guts and didn’t drop their heads.
Special mention goes to Adam Sincock who in his first ever game of baseball took a couple of great catches in the outfield and hit the ball as clean as I have seen from anyone.

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke)Sponsored by:Ace Panel Systems (Major Sponsor)
Sturt 4 lost to Flinders 21
With the bare nine and playing the youthful Flinders side, we were never in the hunt going down 21-4. RAT tried his little heart out on the hill but found the middle of the bat most of the time, DOC fought courageously behind the plate and AJ ran circles in the outfield (where is that darn thing ?). Woody made one of his rare appearances and threw some down the hill only to watch them return over his head even quicker to the sprightly outfield of POP, AJ and LEE who pounced on everything. SMALLY had trouble bending the back at second and BEAR was trying to receive balls from all over the place at first before heading to the mound. DAISY kept his nose over the ball, but it wasn't the start we wanted, next week we might get the rotations right. Hits - POP, AJ

Division 6 (Coach: Dave Smith)
Sturt 1 lost to Kensington 22
After a shakey start the team pulled together and finished on a high note, Good work by Ritchie Carter on the mound and Josh Conner catching well for the entire game. The final score probably not indicating the potential we had for a more even game, but fun was had by all - which is our aim in Div 6.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)
Sturt 4 defeated GGDC 3 Well for our first game of the season we had to travel all the way to GGCD and with Jarrad on his 'L's it was going to be a long drive out and a few more grey's, hopefully the game was going to be better! Well after arriving alive and with a full team we started the game.

I was not that confident at first because in warm up there more laughing than baseball. We started with Jay Lunnon on the mound and only going to throw all my pitchers with about 40 each for the day I was hoping we could come away with a win. GGCD got one in the first while we had three up and three down. We were making some good plays and just missing some others while allowing GGCD to score another one in the process over a couple of innings. We had some hits but not too many that were together so we left some runners on. After Jay finished his 40 odd pitchers we had David Nicholas come in for his turn. He did a great job also holding them to only one run while we had scored two ourselves, one run came from a deep triple from Sam Day who almost caught up to Jarrad as he rounded third. Going into the top of the last the score was 3-2 and we needed to score one to tie and more for the win, with Ben Young on Second and Sam Hollis on first Ben Papps was up to bat. None out the bunt was on and to our credit it was played to the letter with GGCD third baseman running in before the pitch and leaving his base wide open allowing Ben to advance and Sam to second before the pitch was throw in the dirt and Ben Papps able to let it go. Ben then hit a great shot to score two before he was thrown out at third but he had done his job. Harrison Wood to the mound with three outs needed to win. Both Ben’s took a catch and Woody struck out the last batter for a great win first up. Matthew MacBeth caught a fantastic game and the rest of the team backed up the pitchers. We did have a couple of fielding errors but all the boys looked as though they laughed them off and just enjoyed their baseball. This is the attitude I want to see all season, laughing at the start, smiling through the middle and laughing at the end. Great way to start the season off boys just keep it up and make sure you enjoy playing baseball.

If you played last year then you simply need to go to our Registration Section to check the fee you will be required to pay and from this page you can then click on the Password Protected Members Area to update your details.

Players new to our club will need to complete the New Players/Member Registration Form

Please make every effort to Register online as this will help our coaches determine the number of teams that we need to submit to the SABL and assists us with the number of coaches that we will require for the forthcoming season. You do not need to pay at time of registering as at this stage of the year, we are mainly interested in determining numbers. However, as in previous years, a discount applies for fees being paid prior to the first game!

Registration Day is Sunday 30th August and this year, as in previous years Registration Day will commence at 11.00 am. Emmsee Sport will be at the Club from 11.30 am for uniform fitting and also will have a range of baseball equipment for sale.

Registration will stay open during Little League, Under 14 & Under 16 training! However in order to avoid waiting I would ask everyone who can to register online before the 30th August!
