Overseas Players Update

I have had a number of requests for updates on our overseas players, so below you can read updates on Paul Mildren, Angus Roeger and Per Sjörs, however before updating you on them, I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Kingsley and Heather Turner who had Fred for 5 months, Mal and Jenny Watts who had Per for a couple of months and to Chris Day who also had Per for a couple of months. Your generous support of our overseas players helps out our club enormously and we greatly appreciate it.

For those wanting to follow Paul Mildren's progress with the Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate, the Lynchburg Hillcats, there is an excellent Player Summary Page on the MILB.com website.

At the moment the only information we can glean on Angus Roeger is information on the Phuturephillies website which shows him listed at Extended Spring Training.

We have also had an update on Per from his Dad Lars Olof Sjörs which reads:

Now Per Sjörs have been home in Leksand for a few weeks and already he´s talking about going back to Australia and you wonderful people and friends, and his brother Eric is very interested in going with him too.

I have been taking some photos and videos of Per and Eric when they are playing in two springtraining games with the Swedish baseballacademy here In Sweden. This weekend the Swedish series starts for Leksand in Stockholm against Sundbyberg heat. You can see Per and Eric on the website: http://www.sport-tv.se/ klick on the link: “video” under “se/look at” in the left frame.

This season I will upload as much games that I can, and from the Worldchampionchip tryouts Here in Stockholm, Sweden in September.
Sweden is playing against the Olympic champions South Korea.

Update on our Home Ground

For those of you in the Eastern Courier distribution area you will see that in the April 15, 2009 edition that on page 9 there is an article titled, "Council pitch for club move". For those of you not in the distribution area you can now read the Eastern Courier online at http://digitaledition.easterncourier.com.au/. At time of writing Eastern Courier still had last week's edition online but I presume that the April 15 version will be available early in the week.

The Eastern Courier has asked readers to log in to their website and have their say to the question: "Where would you like to see the Sturt Baseball Club based?"

In order to have your say you need to register with the Eastern Courier. You can do this by clicking here to join!

As I reported in my Weekly news of 16 March 2009 the Council had recently discussed our lease on the ground which is up for renewal in 2011.

As I reported in that article the Mitcham Council Corporate and Community Services Committee discussed this matter on 10 March 2009. The Agenda and Minutes from that meeting are online.

In reading the agenda and minutes online I advised council that the briefing that we only use one diamond is not correct since as you are all aware we use Flinders as our second diamond and have done so for some years. I have subsequently been advised by Council that in fact there is a series of attachments to these agendas which are not available online. The Council have now forwarded these to me to clarify that Council were in fact informed of the correct information. It is unfortunate that the Council do not place the Attachments online together with the Agenda and Minutes as it therefore does not provide all the information that is being given to Councillors on the topic.

As I reported in that newsletter, I was due to meet with the Council, BaseballSA, Flinders University and Goodwood Baseball Club on Tuesday 17 March 2009 to discuss future options for our club.

At that meeting I put forward that Sturt Baseball Club was keen to consider other options for our club, but that this needed to meet a minimum set of criteria:

1. that any proposed relocation would need to include two or three diamonds. The Club already uses two and up to three diamonds on a weekend. Presently we already use the Flinders University Ground for a large majority of our junior games and in addition we have a further back up of a third ground thanks to the assistance of the Glenelg Baseball Club.

2. that any new ground needed to meet standards and have appropriate change-rooms which met criteria laid out by BaseballSA

3. that any new ground needed to have a club rooms of the same or better standard than we currently have at Norman Reserve. It should be noted to our new club members that the clubrooms at Norman Reserve have been built and paid for by our club, not the council therefore it would be imperative for us to have a facility of equal or better standard if we were to relocate.

4. that any clubrooms would need to have the ability to have a Liquor Licence in the same way we currently have at Norman Reserve.

5. that any relocation would need to be accompanied by a significant lease in the order of 10 years with the right of renewal for a further 10 years. This would be necessary for the stability of our club.

6. that any proposal put to our club needed to be viable and funded. The Club is keen to explore the option of the St Mary's Ground (the old Panther Park), however I understand to accommodate the current tennants, that is Kennilworth Football Club, Gaelic Football and ourselves a significant amount of money would be required to re-design the ground and facilities. Given the large quantum of money involved in such a redevelopment I have asked for a meeting with the CEO of Mitcham Council Ms Helen Dyer. I understand that the St Mary's Sports Association is currently considering this matter and will be advising council in the coming week of their views on this matter.

7. in the absence of a viable alternative that the Sturt Baseball Club would propose to continue its lease at Norman Reserve past 2011. At a minimum this lease extension would be to utilise Norman Reserve for juniors, however if a viable senior ground could not be found with appropriate change-rooms and licensed club facilities that the status quo remain. The Sturt Baseball Club believes that the Risk Assessment previously conducted on Norman Reserve could be conducted on any sporting ground in Australia with similar results. The Club is yet to see any evidence from a Risk Assessment perspective which would suggest that Norman Reserve has any higher documented risk than any other ground.

Following these discussions the Flinders University formally withdrew its offer of being a southern baseball hub as it advised it could not meet a number of the criteria outlined above.

Given the positive approach taken by Sturt Baseball Club in this matter and on the advice of the Mitcham Council for us to canvass all options, I have also written to the Adelaide City Council, the Unley City Council and following the Advertiser article on 07/04/09 Page 5 regarding the redevelopment of the Showgrounds and the CEO John Rothwell asking sporting groups to write to him for ideas on how to use this redeveloped facility, I have also written to him to express our interest.

I should also point out that the Sturt Baseball Club has fully cooperated with the Mitcham Council in respect to working with residents. I wrote to the then CEO of Mitcham Council Ron Malcolm on 28/11/07 advising that I would be the Community Liaison person. Since 28/11/07 till today, I have only received two phone calls from residents both of which were resolved within about 15 minutes.

I think you can see from the above summary that the Sturt Baseball Club is making every effort to work with the Mitcham Council to explore ground alternatives for our future, however these ground alternatives need to be viable both from a baseball and financial perspective.

I will keep members informed of developments via our website/emails and provide a face to face update briefing at our Annual General Meeting on Monday 1 June 2009.

Junior Umpire Mentoring

Jimmy Davidson has kindly offered to mentor the lads who attended the level 0 umpires course.

Jimmy is proposing to mentor them by having them share umpiring duties with him during the Winterball Season.

They will be paid $15.00 per game.

Jimmy can supply a set of plate umpires gear on loan.

Jimmy has asked that any of these lads who would like to take up this opportunity should email him.

Jimmy advises that if they learn to umpire with him over the winter they will then be right to umpire the Little League next summer.

This is a very generous offer from Jimmy and would provide a wonderful learning opportunity. I would urge any of the lads who did the earlier level 0 course to seriously consider taking up this offer.

I have had a request from our Senior Coach Tony Catt requesting that if anyone has any gym equipment they no longer require can they contact him on 0412 244 327.

The Senior Squad are keen to work on their strength in the off season and are seeking weights, boxing equipment and anything else that will improve this area of their game.

Sturt Season Awards

Our Club held its Senior Presentation Night on Saturday 4th April 2009 and its Junior Presentation Day on Sunday 5th April 2009
In my opening address to both events, I reflected on the wonderful start to the season with our centenary dinner on 1st November.
Feedback from that event has been excellent and it set the scene for the rest of the year.

The centenary dinner and subsequent centenary day at the club provided us with the opportunity to honour many of the club's greats through the Hall of Fame. It was great to see so many people who had a long association with the club attend these events.

There is no doubt that the highlight of the season from a seniors perspective was the Division 2 side winning our first senior premiership in a decade! Well done to Tommy Winter and the Division 2 team!

From a junior perspective it was great to see how many of our junior teams made finals again this year and it was an outstanding effort to see that we had four teams play off for a grand final. This depth of talent only augers well for the future of our club.

I was also very pleased to announce at these events over the weekend that following discussions between Tony Catt and the Senior Committee on last Monday night, the Senior Committee unanimously agreed that Tony would be re-appointed as our Division 1 Coach for the 2009-10 season. The Committee believes that Tony has done an outstanding job as our Division 1 coach in his first two seasons. Our Club is very lucky to have someone with Tony's expertise and committment to the Club in this role. I wish him continued success in the forthcoming season.

Junior Grand Final Edition

As a club on Sunday we have had a wonderful day of baseball. Our club was in four Grand Finals which is a great achievement in its own right. Whilst unfortunately we did not win any of them, this should not distract us from the many positives that came out of the day. First and foremost the fact that we had one Under 16, two Under 14 and one Little League team in Grand Finals signals that we have wonderful talent within in our club. Second, to have such talented and experienced coaches for each of these teams is also something that as a club we should feel very proud. Thirdly and most importantly the level of support from every member of our club was evident by the numbers that turned out to support our Juniors. The number of seniors who were there supporting the juniors was particularly pleasing. Our club is about promoting juniors into senior ranks and we are in there for the long haul! The enthusiasm of our coaches and the skill of our young players is very encouraging!

I would like to congratulate every junior who played in a Grand Final on Sunday. To play in a Grand Final is very special. The fact that during the Under 14/1 game at Sturt a number of the players were asking our A Grade Coach Tony Catt when does pre-season training start, speaks volumes for what we are about as a club.

On Friday night at the Baseball SA Junior presentation it was great to see Little League Division 2-Sturt player Matthew Amberg win the medal in his first year in baseball. Congratulations Matthew on this great achievement!

It is a great pleasure to announce that five of our Sturt players have been selected to go to the Australian Baseball Academy in Queensland. Congratulations to Daniel Lee, Pat Burns, Sam Day, Jackson Brebner-Russ and Tom Teague. It is an outstanding effort for our club to have five players selected and we wish them every success at the Academy.

The home page of ESPN Deportes.com, one of the most highly traffic'ed sports sites, has a question posed for fans..."Should Baseball Be Back In The Olympics?" As someone with an interest in growing baseball and supporting us in our endeavors we would ask all to go to the site and vote, and tell your friends as well. The site is not in English so you need to scroll about half way down the page, look for blogs in the middle of the page and then to your right is the voting box.

In closing, I look forward to seeing you at our Presentation Night for Seniors and Presentation Day for Juniors. Please note details below. They are both great events so please mark the dates down in your diary!

Upcoming Social Events for your diary!

To start with, a BIG THANKYOU to everyone who came out to the ground on Sunday and supported our team, it is a credit to the club the amount of support that was out there and not only could we hear you but we could feel it as well.

No doubt this was a good game to watch from a spectator point of view regardless of the result but this was one we let get away.

Yes the two best teams in the competition played off which was great and yes it was a great contest but we didn’t do some of the little things which we had worked on all year which resulted in us coming up short in the game that counted most. Hopefully the boys will learn a big lesson from this and use it in their future baseball endeavors.

Enough of the doom and gloom, to the boys credit, they fought this game out right to the bitter end and as a club, a parent and a coach, you couldn’t be prouder of their fighting spirit. The boys stuck together believing they could still win this game, I still think the boys will get plenty of positives out of the game. Their constant chatter and support of their team mates, urging each other on was unquestionable and full credit to Lewis Brideson and Jayden Trembath who didn’t take to the field but were right there doing their bit for the team right from the word go. To the Brideson and Trembath families, you should be very proud of your boy’s commitment to this team. It’s guys like this who you want in your squad.

Derek Schnorr, he definitely turned up to play and had a great Finals Series, he owned the outfield all series and got that bat working when it counted. Tyler Lunnon and Henry Brennan patrolled the other two outfield positions and came up with some very telling catches and some nice plays during the Final. Big Max Guehrer has no doubt learnt a lot this year and takes everything on board and as a first year player, he stepped up and put in a solid performance. Sam Gillespie also had a good Finals Series behind the plate and with the bat as our lead off hitter. He makes the pitcher work hard for his out and seams to pick up that hit when it counts. Matt Franke had a shaky start to the game on the mound but fought back hard with the bat to pick up a couple of timely hits. Harrison Lightbody tried hard again and was rock solid at second and had a stint on the mound. Haz always gives his 100% and did his bit for the team again. James Snelgrove picked up some telling hits for us and did a good job on the mound. For a player in only his third season of baseball, he has had a lot of extra pressure on him as our go to man and to his credit, rarely has he let us down and his commitment to this Grand Final, his team mates and the club lead to another solid performance.

Sam Roberts, another who turned up to play and has a very competitive spirit which I love in this player, I couldn’t question his commitment in this game and as a result, he had great game.

Thankyou to Dean Franke for his role as Assistant Coach, Sandy Franke as Scorer and to Mark Snelgrove as Team Manager.

Thanks also to our Team Sponsors for your support of the team and the club and special thanks to all the Parents, Friends and Family Members who have supported the team all year.

I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching this group of players, watching them improve their skills and turning them into a TEAM. I know it is great to win Grand Finals at this age but the memories and the friendships gained along the way trying to reach this goal are more important than winning.

Well done boys.

Under U14/2 - (Coach: Sturt Karen Tindall and Peter Duffield) Team Sponsor: Wendy's Burnside,Class A Jewellers
The Under 14 Division 2 team lost to Gawler 7 – 9 in the Grand Final.
We may have lost, but the boys should be very proud of what they achieved throughout the season.
The game was played at a very high standard; there were only 3 errors in the game, with Sturt only making the one.
We started well scoring in the 1st innings, only to see Gawler come back at us courtesy of our only error and a huge home run.
It was a 2 – 3 ball game at the bottom of the 3rd innings when Gawler piled on 5 runs from 4 hits and took a 2 – 8 lead.
The boys settled and slowly worked their way back into the game scoring in each of the four remaining innings while shutting down Gawler along the way but could not get over the line in the end.
Our pitchers were the better of the two teams and Josh Tindall and Lewis Brideson worked extremely hard, only giving up 2 walks for the game. Josh started and pitched four innings for 1K2 and 7 hits, while Lewis pitched the last two innings for 3 K2’s and 2 hits.
Our fielding was tremendous; they caught the fly balls and made the plays at first and second to stop the advancing runners.
Unfortunately our strong batting form eluded us and we could only amass 7 hits and this lead to our down fall as we left 9 runners on bases compared to Gawler who only left the one.
Hits to Sam Duffield (2), Jayden Trembath (1), Lewis Brideson(1), Lazar Losic (1), Errol Burns (1), and Alex Renton (1).
Thank you to all our supporters who travelled to Gawler to cheer the boys on, it was great to see a large crowd.
Well done boys and good luck for next season.

WT 8 defeated Sturt 7
Best junior game of baseball I have every been involved in. I am so happy with the team, you guys did everything I asked like getting bat contact, making the plays and keeping strike out to a minimum. This gave us a really good chance to win this game. I had a gut feeling that this game may go into extra digs, this nearly happened and may have been a rough umpiring call that stop it, but we need to accept all umpiring calls as you will never change their mind. Boy great batting and awesome base running , Mitchell and Zach L both pitched very well. Be happy guys we have had a good year and I have ticked off most box's that I wanted to achieve. Thanks you to all parents and supporters from yesterday you guys really made the day special to the boys, they love playing to a large crowd. Thanks you to all people that helped me out throughout the year hard to single out as all parents help in some form, special thanks to my manager Helen Cavanagh she make my life easy on Sunday as my admin skills are very poor. Special thanks to Nicole McArdle, Trudy Evreniadis and Julie MacBeth for scoring, thanks to Barry Lunnon and Gary Wood for umpiring and finally thanks to Matt Mulryan, Harrison Lightbody and Matthew MacBeth for helping out at trainings. See you all at presentation day.

Junior Prelim Finals Edition

Following on from last weekend's historic Division 2 Premiership, the Club has had another very proud day, with all four junior teams making Grand Finals for this coming Sunday! This is an outstanding effort and reflects on all the hard work that has been put in at our Club with juniors for many years. It is really nice to see us reaping the rewards of this hard work!

At Sturt last Sunday the atmosphere was fantastic with teams coming back to the club after their respective wins. It was great to catch up with players and coaches from those victorious sides! It was also great to see so many Senior players at the club to cheer on the Juniors! As a club we have been striving for this club attitude and it is wonderful to see it now coming to fruition!

The four Grand Finals for this weekend are as follows:

10:00 AM West Torrens vs SBC U16/1 - Sturt at West Torrens

10:00 AM Gawler vs SBC U14/2 - Sturt at Gawler

12:30 PM West Torrens vs SBC Little League 1 - Sturt at West Torrens

2:00 PM SBC U14/1 - Sturt vs Kensington at Sturt

The League have been kind to us in that it is physically possible for Sturt fans to get to three out of the four Grand Finals! As I indicated the number of people at the club last Sunday was fantastic and I invite teams and supporters to come back to the club after their games have finished to support the Under 14/1 team which will be playing at home at 2.00 pm and to hopefully celebrate your own victory!

One of our sponsors SIA Sports Images has produced a magnificent poster as a memento of the historic Division 2 victory. You can view the poster online and order directly through the SIA Sports Images website. In addition SIA have now loaded 300 images online which you can view and if you like purchase.

I also apologise in that last week I accidentally left off Harrison Wood Under 16/1 Sturt player who has also been listed in the Top Five for votes for the Junior Medal count which will be held on this Friday night. Congratulations to Harrison and the other players I mentioned in last week's Newsletter. The Club is proud of your collective achievements and wish you well!

As you all know the lease for our ground at Norman Reserve is up for renewal in February 2011. I am writing to let you know we are currently working collaboratively with Council to explore options in relation to our future. The Mitcham Council Corporate and Community Services Committee discussed this matter on 10 March 2009. The Agenda and Minutes from that meeting are online.

In reading the agenda and minutes I have advised council that the briefing that we only use one diamond is not correct since as you are all aware we use Flinders as our second diamond and have done so for some years. I also pointed out to Council in relation to the minutes that I have been the Community Liaison Officer since I advised council of this in November 2007.

I am meeting with Council and other key stakeholders on Tuesday morning to further look at options for the future. I will provide regular updates to you all when appropriate.

Unfortunately over the season we have had a few players injured and those players or their families have needed to access information on how to claim for insurance. In order to make this process simple I have added a page to our website under the section about > insurance where you can read what is required and also download the claim form! I believe this will streamline the process for our members.

It’s down to the wire now with the Grand Final against West Torrens. This will be where the rubber hits the road and the tough get going – a chance for these guys to make a little history. We will have a gun training session on Wednesday and give it our best shot next week. Go Sturt!

STURT 7 def GLENELG 5

Once again we had a good start to the game with James Snelgrove starting on the mound for us. We then had Sammy G Pie lead off with a double to left field and then steal 3rd. Unfortunately we couldn't get him home but Harrison Lightbody did his best by smashing a line drive to Right Field with one out but it was hit that well, Sam had no chance to tag up and score.

The 2nd dig, we shut Glenelg down again with 3 up and 3 down and once again started well in the batters box with Sam Roberts leading off with a nice hit to Right Field, stole 2nd and was driven in by a nice double from Matt Franke.

3rd dig, Glenelg shut down, we get lead off on again. Henry Brennan then comes up with a great bunt to advance our lead off who was then driven in by a James Snelgrove base hit. Sam Roberts then came up with another hit only to come up a little short at 2nd.

Bugger.

4th dig, we get the first 2 hitters out and then we have a little problem. BB, -9, BB, BB, BB, BB. Throw in a few WP and we were down 5 - 2. Matt Franke then came in to finishing things off for us and continued for the remainder of the game, shutting Glenelg down with good support from the field.

To the boys' credit they just kept on fighting hard to pick up another 8 hits to 2 to run over the top of Glenelg and I'm sure the boys now know the game is never over until that Fat Lady Sings. It was a great team effort which showed plenty of fighting spirit and in many ways a good way to go into a Grand Final knowing we are going to have the last say with the bat.

Great effort Guys and to the many parents, families, friends and club members, thanks for the support.

The Under 14 Division 2 team defeated Golden Grove 22 – 14 to win the Preliminary Final.

The boys were fantastic in their endeavour to win a place in the Grand Final. Everyone stayed focused and enthusiastic for the seven innings.

It was a hard fought game that saw us in front for 5 innings, but slowly Golden Grove clawed their way back, and took the lead 13 – 14 at the bottom of the 5th innings.

Our 6th innings produced 2 runs to put us back in front and our fielding in the 6th sealed the game as we made the 3 outs with only 11 balls pitched.

In the 7th innings we picked up 7 hits and scored 7 runs to increase our lead to 8 runs and mercy the opposition.

Josh Tindall and Lewis Brideson pitched 3 innings each, striking out their big hitters when it most counted. Alex Renton caught another good game behind the mask.

Our fielding display was good all day, we backed up, caught the fly balls and we made the plays for the outs and even picked up a double play.

We hit all day amassing a season high of 18 hits and drove in 21 of our 22 runs.

Hits to Sam Duffield (3), Miro Van Rensburg (3), Errol Burns (3), Lazar Losic (2), Jayden Trembath (2), Lewis Brideson(2), Josh Tindall (1), Scott Wyatt (1) and Alex Renton (1).

Thank you to our supporters and helpers who braved the cold, damp and windy conditions and we hope to see you next Sunday at Gawler.

The boys are good enough to win the flag, they only have to believe in themselves and have FUN.

Sturt 17 Defeated Woodville 5

Good work boys we got the job done! Today we made sure we got bat contact and this slowly wore Woodville down, drawing errors and seeing there number one pitcher of the mound by the end of the 3rd. We then hit their second pitcher all round the park. Everyone batted well with a special mention to Jordan McArdle finishing the day with 4/4 and two great foul ball catch's from behind the dish. We also fielded very well with only one error of memory, Reuben Bishop took a game winning catch from right field and then fired the ball into 2nd and got the double keep it up Reuben we need these types of plays to go all the way. Brodie MacBeth also made a great play at 3rd, Charlie was as usual solid at Short, Zach E played well at 1st also getting 2/2 with his bat. Boys we need these plays to help out our Pitcher and keep there pitch count down. Mitchell Lightbody and Zach Lunnon both pitched great games and showed plenty of character. Boys don't think to much about whether we are going to win or lose we are better off thinking about what we can do to give us the best chance at winning. Like bat contact and put the opposition under pressure when base running, making the plays in the field and staying up all day even if something has not gone our way. We have beaten them before and we can do it again. BELIEVE it and it will happen.

Premiership Edition

What a historic weekend it has been for the Sturt Baseball Club! The weekend started on Saturday with our Gala Day which included our final Division 1 appearance for the season. The afternoon was a great success with the commentary team of Peter Gee and Garry Wood providing an excellent commentary on the game! It really adds another dimension to the game having the commentary and I have had great feedback on the concept from both within and outside our club.
The afternoon finished off with a Coaches versus Legends game. Bruce Packer did a great job commentating this game!
I would also like to thank Sue Holmes, Trudy and David Lightbody, Sue Brebner and Raelene Day who assisted greatly on the day. Once again the logistics were worked through by Darren Noble who did all the spade work for the event and then had to go to a wedding on the day! Thanks Darren for the work you put in bringing the event together.

Another special event on our Gala Day was Trent Small having his head shaved for the "World's Greatest Shave". When Trent registered for this event, Trent thought he could raise $50. As it turned out he raised nearly ten times that amount with his final tally being $495. Well done Trent and it was great to see so many of the club also supporting Trent in this activity. Check out the photos!

The only sad note for Saturday was that our Division 4 team went down to Adelaide 9-8 in a close game. This now ends their season, but congratulations on making it!

On Sunday we had a day packed full of finals. There were a number of junior teams in finals and as you will read later in this Newsletter, a number had success!

At 2.00 pm on Sunday the game of the year commenced with Sturt taking on Glenelg at Glenelg. A huge crowd came to watch the game from our club, but we also noted that we had good support from other clubs who came to support the boys. In an excellent game which went right down to the last dig our boys brought it home defeating Glenelg 11-9. Congratulations to Tom Winter and the entire team. Great teams win premierships and this is a great team! It is a decade since our last Premiership in Division 2. It was especially sweet to have this victory in our Centenary year. It was great to see the emotional scenes after the game (see photos on the front page of our website) and then back at our Clubrooms.

One of our sponsors SIA Sports Images has produced a magnificent poster as a memento of the historic day. You can view the poster online and order directly through the SIA Sports Images website.

This weekend we still have SBC Little League 1 - Sturt, SBC U14/1 - Sturt and SBC U16/1 - Sturt all competing for a Grand Final spot at our home ground on Sunday at 10.00 am, 12.30 pm and 3.00 pm respectively. Our SBC U14/2 - Sturt will be playing Golden Grove at Golden Grove at 12.30 pm for a spot in the U14/2 Grand Final. I wish these junior teams every success this weekend!

Congratulations to the following players who have made the top five players as voted by the official umpiring votes. Players from Sturt in the top five are as follows; Matthew Amberg, Little League Division 2-Sturt, Sam Cavanagh, Little League Division 1-Sturt, Joshua Tindall, Under 14/2 -Sturt, James Snelgrove, Under 14/1- Sturt and Jackson Brebner-Russ, Under 16/1-Sturt.

In case you missed it, we got a big write up in this week's Sunday Mail in the Ben, Bec and Buzz column in the Sports section. Ben Hook talked about our shed fire and on a happier note reported that our own Paul Mildren who is playing in the World Baseball Classic in Mexico. On Sunday, Australia stunned the baseball world by mercying Mexico 17-7. If you have pay TV check ESPN Australia for information on the games that are being shown.

With so many special events happening, I have now introduced a new feature on our website, a photo gallery!! In addition to the photos on the front page of the website you can now access other postings either directly from the front page or from the top menu by going to news > photo gallery.

Sturt 5 lost to Goodwood 9
The last game for the year was going to be emotional as we said farewell to Per Sjors, Dale Martens and Tom Brice.
Per Sjors has been fantastic this season for the Saints. He has fitted in to the group well and has been a great competitor on the field. We wish Per all the best for his future baseball career and we hope he enjoyed his stay in Adelaide. We have certainly enjoyed having you.
Dale Martens played his last game of Division 1 baseball for the Saints on the weekend. Dale and Heather are expecting their first child this year and he has decided with the family coming first he will perhaps play in the lower grades in years to come. Dale has been a massive part of the Sturt Baseball Club over the last 15 years and was a very successful Division 1 pitcher for many years. His batting prowess wasn't his strong point but Dale will argue that point!!! Well done Dale on a great career and we wish you all the best on the arrival of your baby this year. Tom Brice also announced his retirement from baseball. Tom has had an outstanding career. Australian representative, Olympic representative including the Silver medal at the Athens Games, Minor League player to AA level for the Chicago Whitesox, Claxton Shield player for many years and last but not least a Sturt Saints player for the last 16 years. He has had a stellar career and I was privileged enough to play with him and be his coach for the last 2 years. We will miss you Tom.
The final game was highlighted by some huge homeruns. Unfortunately we were on the wrong end of the result but certainly pushed the top side all the way to the bottom of the ninth.
This senior team is young but extremely talented. There is an enormous amount of improvement in them a lot of which will only be acquired as they play more baseball at this top level. That will take time. It has been a pleasure once again coaching this group and I look forward to more success in the years ahead.
I would like to congratulate Tom Winter, Stuart Crutchley and the entire B Grade for the Grand Final victory. This premiership means a lot to the club in the Centenary year and now you have all etched your name in Sturt history for everyone to remember. I am very proud of you all.

Division 2 Grand Final
Sturt 11 d Glenelg 9
Well... what a way to finnish of the clubs Centenary year celebration, with the club,s first senior premiership in 10 years. Pat Burns, like he has all finals series, kicked it off with some damaging pitching to only allow 1 run and 2 hits in 5 2/3 innings, once again a 110 pitch count came into effect. This allowed my B grade import (all the way from Mt Gambier) to take the ball, and once again he didn't fail to impress, in what was a tough situation. Only some late hitting by the Bays (setting off some nerves by the way) meant a late pitching change. Shane Horne took the ball and finished it off, striking out the last three hitters. Generally when your pitchers are firing so is your field and this was no exception, but some special mentions to Jimmy Passmore, Adam Kerr and Will Frogley who came up with some wonderful plays throughout the day.
Offensively we were sensational, hitting has been a part of this side's game that has been inconsistent through the whole season. But the boys turned it on! Jimmy Passmore set off the spark with three early hits and Jackson Brebner-Russ kept his superb finals series going, picking up four hits and another great game behind the plate.
In what was a wonderful day for the club i feel only right that everyone gets a mention.... so here is your 2008/09 Sturt Saints Division 2 Premiership Side

Starting Pitcher Pat Burns
Catcher Jackson Brebner- Russ
1st Base Darren Stewart
2nd Base Tom Faehse
3rd Base Will Frogley

I would like to take this opportunity to thank some people. Firstly the team, what a great bunch off blokes and not bad baseball players, you have been a pleasure to coach and you deserve all the accolades you receive. I would like to thank Sue Brebner, Meredith Stewart and Carol Burns who between them undertook the scoring for this season, thanks so much. I would also like Tony Catt, Zac Stokes, Bruce Packer, Darren Noble, Phil Robinson, Stuart Crutchley, Dale Martens (sorry if i have forgotten any one) for their tireless efforts this season. Thanks Again GO SAINTS!

Sturt lost their second game of the season to West Torrens on Sunday. The bad news is we played a shocker! We got 5 hits, struck out 10 times and handed them 12 hits and 9 walks. The good news is that we play the Eagles this Sunday and go to the GF if we win. We need to show some real G & D to take it out this year and the challenge is there for the guys to step up and grab the opportunity.

After a good week on the training track, the boys came out to play. Sam Gillespie got the ball rolling with a stand up double off the 3rd pitch of the game and was then advanced to 3rd by Henry Brennan on a ball hit to 2nd. Harrison Lightbody then cracked one to right field to score the run but Coach Gillespie tried to turn a double into a triple, only to come up short. (Obviously Harrison wasn’t trying hard enough…..just joking). Just to make me look even sillier, James Snelgrove then smashed a double which would have scored Haz anyway. So we started with a bang which had WT on the back foot early.
Matt Franke started on the mound for us and gave us the start we were looking for by striking out the first hitter. Matt pitched 4 quality innings, giving up only 2 runs which set us up nicely to finish off the last 3 digs with James Snelgrove who also did at good job. Sam Gillespie also had a good day behind the mask and had a couple of nice throws across to 2nd.
This was truly a game where everyone contributed, Harrison Lightbody was rock solid at 2nd and hit really well, Henry Brennan taking a nice catch in the OF but more importantly, advancing runners with his at bats, Tyler Lunnon with some nice plays in the OF, Derek Schnorr taking a match winning diving catch at center field which even the opposition were in awe of, mind you WT took a great diving catch at 1st to deny Derek a hit which he had smashed. Max Guehrer had some telling plays at 3rd and worked hard in the batters box. Sam Roberts had a good day out at 1st and saved our bacon a few times and Lewis Brideson and Jayden Trembath were always there ready to go and supporting their team mates.
A Great Team Effort Guys and to our Families and Friends, Thankyou for your continued support.
One game at a time and who knows where it will take us.

The Under 14 Division 2 team won their first semi final game 15 – 11 against Kensington.
The boys were nervous going into the final but confident they could win as they had beaten Kensington twice during the season.
Joshua Tindall pitched superbly for 5 innings and was well supported by Jayden Trembath for the remaining 2 innings. Our fielding was on top early and we made the plays for the outs and even picked off runners on bases.
As the game wore on, tiredness brought about some errors in the field but the boys stuck to their game and as always rallied with the bats to out score their opposition.
Hits to Lazar Losic (3), Lachlan Hooper (2), Sam Duffield, Jayden Trembath, Lewis Brideson, Errol Burns and Alex Renton (1).
This week we play Golden Grove for a place in the Grand Final. The boys are good enough to win if they want to.
Thank you to our supporters and we hope to see you there on Sunday.

Well done Boys we have advanced through to play Woodville for a spot in the GF next Sunday 10am at the Club. Today's result was exactly what I wanted, we still need to work hard in the batters box but we are improving every week. Well done to Mitchell for his in ground home run and pitching three awesome digs giving away only 2 runs. Thanks to Charlie and Sue Goldsworthy for driving 2.5 hrs from their holiday to play. Good batting from Henry,Jordan, Sam, Fraser, Rueben and Zach E. We will need to play better baseball to beat Woodville but we have the side to do it, we have hit Troy before and we will again. Remember bat contact is crucial and helping the pitchers out in the field is just as important. See you at training.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulff)
In a tragic end to the year we went down to Goodwood, 14-8.

Tragic is extreme but let me paint a picture. We were having batting practice before the game with all the boys crunching the ball with all signs good that we were set and ready to play finals baseball. Our starting pitcher, Max, was warming up on the sideline when a throw back to him clipped the tip of his glove and onto his forehead. Accidents happen and many of us can say we've been hit by a baseball but Max was hit so hard that he could not stand up without feeling dizzy, had double vision, and had no feeling in a couple of fingers. This was 5 minutes before the game and we were all worried about Max's wellbeing more so than the game itself. Max was taken to the nearby Flinders Medical Centre where it was found he had suffered concussion! I have found out since that Max is ok but disappointed he missed the big game.

While this was going on we had a game to play so not only were we without our most effective pitcher, batter, and fielder, but we were all a bit shaken and distracted with concern for Max. It showed early as we fell behind 10-2 with little spark amongst us. We held them to 2 runs in the 3rd and no runs in the 4th so going to the 5th inning we had pegged the lead back to be down 12-8. Goodwood scored 2 runs in their half of the 5th inning to close the game out. The most runs you can score in one Little League Minor inning is 5 so it was impossible to chase down a 6 run lead in what was the last inning.

In the end I was very proud of the fight back by the boys. A few highlights were the good catches made by Tennyson and Nick, the clutch hitting by Daniel and Michael Ortiz, the outstanding job as catcher by William, and the super pitching performance by Matt. It must also be mentioned the courage shown by Ryack as that poor lad was hit by a ball on the cheek on the very first play of the game and then took a hard hit ball on the hip. While both would have hurt badly he never even considered coming out of the game.

Thanks to the parents and kids of the Saints team for coming out to cheer us on. We heard you and felt your support. Lastly, I have had a most enjoyable year surrounded by these little sponges, all wanting to get better and taking in everything they were taught. I was very fortunate to have great assistance by Debbie, Ralph, Ron, Bernard, and many others who asked if they could lend a hand each week.
