Congratulations to our Division 2 side under the leadership of Tom Winter who on Sunday defeated West Torrens 3-2 in a nail biting finish to win the right to play off in the Grand Final on Sunday 8th March, 2.00 pm at Glenelg Baseball Club. It was fantastic to see so many Saints supporters at West Torrens and I would urge you to make every effort to get down to Glenelg on Sunday. I know the boys really appreciate the vocal support provided by the Saints supporters!

You can check out some of the photos from the game against West Torrens on the front page of our website!

In the other Senior grades, Division 4 also made the finals and will be playing on Saturday at 12 noon against Adelaide at Adelaide.

This year our Junior sides have done a magnificent job with six out of the nine sides making the finals. Under 18, Under 16/2 Sturt and Little League 2-Saints unfortunately missed out on finals. Congratulations to all the junior sides who have made finals. Details of game times are on our website.

In what is shaping up to be a huge weekend for our club, Division 1 play their last game of the season at home against Goodwood on Saturday at our special Gala Day. The game commences at 3.00 pm but try and get to the club at least half an hour earlier as we will have some special events leading up to the game. For further details see our Upcoming Social Events Section below for further information.

For those who are not aware the weekend did not start off very well, when I was advised on Saturday morning that arsonists had torched our shed on Friday night! The contents of the shed were destroyed. However we understand that the shed and its contents are fully insured. I will keep you posted with developments. I would like to thank the baseball community for offers of assistance on Saturday morning when we had just on an hour to source bases etc in order to have our ground ready for a game on Saturday at 12.30pm. Special thanks to David Lee who assisted me in sourcing bases loaned to us from West Torrens. Also thanks to Goodwood who offered us every assistance with any other equipment we might need. Baseball SA also have provided immediate assistance and have been very helpful. To all of you who are assisting us thank you very much.

Upcoming Social Events for your diary!

Darren Noble took the reins as Tony Catt was away for this game.
Although we had a depleted line up I was confident we could cause an upset. Defensively it started off well with Per Sjors putting in another solid performance on the mound. Offensively, the guys were hitting their import pitcher (who had the nastiest slider I’ve seen this season) yet we lacked those all important hits with men on base. Unfortunately the wheel nuts fell off in the 4th with a few errors giving up 6 runs and we never really recovered. A special mention to a couple of guys making their A grade debut this season, Rick Mitchell at 3rd who did his job and Ben Bicknell played left field who still swings the bat damn hard and nearly put one out.
It’s our last game of the Centenary Season next Saturday at home against Goodwood and it would be great to finish with a win. So come down to the club and show your support and enjoy the Saints Gala/Sponsors Day and Sturt Legends V Sturt Coaches AllStars game after the Div 1 game.
I also want to thank Tony for letting me assist the A grade this season (& play a few games). I’ve been away from the game for so long, it was pleasure to be a part of it again. And I re-assure you the Saints A grade will be force to reckon with in the not too distant future.
I’d also like to wish the B grade boys all the best of luck in next Sundays Grand Final... “Refuse to Lose”!

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)
An outstanding game with our Division 2 side defeating West Torrens 3-2 to earn a spot in this year's Grand Final. Pat Burns again pitched an outstanding game- pitching 8 of the 9 innings before his 110 pitch count came into effect. Craig Wright came into to relieve at the bottom of the 9th innings when the score was 3-2! This was not an enviable position to be in for Craig but he handled the situation wonderfully and struck out 3 batters give us victory! Jackson Brebner Russ did a great job behind the dish, but the committment of all the players was outstanding.

With no umpire, no reserves, no shed and no Pres it appeared from the outset we were in for a tough afternoon. Facing our local foes the Indians again, but on our hunting ground this time, we put the wagons in a circle and fired off our first rounds without hitting anything. RAT - Richard Arthur Trembath on the mound was giving it his all but after 3 innings we were down 2-8, Shrek was impenetrable as the backstop and Sluga was throwing his body all over the place to stop what he could. Pop and Doc were busier than one armed violinists in the outfield, Davey Lee took a catch, Smally was impassable at second and the coach was his wily old self at first, unfortunately Daisy's glove was broken. The bats came alive finally in the fifth and we clawed out a loss 7-10. Hits - Pop 1, Shrek 3, Sluga 2, Wulff 1, Zulu 1, Doc 2, Daisy 1. Thanks to KC for scoring (could read the book this week), Wulffy and Smally for half umpiring, the pom pom girls on the verandah and to everyone for a fun but tiring season. Oh and the Pres for a no show which may have made the score closer. Good luck to the Div 2 boys this week !

Sturt defeated Eagles 18-1 at Woodville. In our last minor round game we fronted the depleted Eagles at Woodville – Jai threw a shut out over three innings and is looking very much at home on the mound. The Sturt bats were on fire as we racked up 22 hits in 4 innings including 6 doubles, 3 triples and a home run to Justin Zak, who is finding some great form after a little post-Christmas slump. Our challenge is to continue this form into the finals starting with West Torrens at home next week.

In a game I expected us to win, the first two innings were tight as we trailed 2-3. It was in the top of the third that we rallied for nine runs and took a stranglehold on the game. Alex Furler had a good day with the bat picking up a triple, a walk then a double before collecting the worst three pitch strikeout I think I've ever seen!! (don't worry, he saw the funny side.) Others to pick up two hits were Tim Kimber, Cameron McKinnon, Brett Mulryan and Jack Colmer. Paige Mattsson took a top catch in right field, Sam Osmond stabbed a hot linedrive at third base and Hamish Straatman started a 6-4-3 double play which was the first time we had accomplished this all season. There was a really good spirit on the bench today (something I had been asking for most of the season) and the team had fun so it was pleasing to finish on such a good note. Final score Sturt 16 d Henley & Grange 4.

The Under 14 Division 2 team defeated Henley & Grange 7 – 0 on a forfeit.
Unfortunately Henley & Grange only had 5 players for their final game of the home and away season which presented us with a problem as we needed to play before for next weeks finals.
I would like to thank Henley & Grange and Sturt’s Under 12 players that helped out to enable a practice match to be played. Well done to Jordan McArdle, Tom Bishop and Tyson Ottoway.
Our team finished the minor round in third spot (10 – 6) and will now play in the finals next week. This is a great achievement boys. Well done.

Sturt 6 lost to Woodville 7
We had a tough game today facing the Adelaide's All-stars pitcher Troy Nicholson from Woodville. Troy is a very strong pitcher and this made it very difficult to get hits. There was some good hits for the day but we did not mange to string them together. Zach E, Charlie G and Reuben B all batted well, we all need to remember when we face a fast pitcher we should slow the bat swing down and look to get contact first this makes the opposition have to make a play. Positive for the day was we did fight back in the last dig to score the full allowed five runs to even up the game but unfortunately Woodville scored the required run to take the win. This has been a very successful season only losing three games for the year, I can't wait for finals to begin; let's put on our game face and beat Adelaide next week and move onto the next challenge. See you all at training this week.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulff)
A friendly yet competitive rivalry between the Sturt Little League 2 sides as well as a family rivalry between brothers, Tennyson and Tristan Boag, saw Tennyson's Sturt side hang on to win a nail biter, 13-11.
Our pitchers did an excellent job throwing strikes and our fielding was improved. Max Staggs did it with the bat and ball again, picking up 3 hits and pitching a scoreless 1st inning. Jack hit and pitched well but was unlucky in the last inning when a hard hit ball of his hit our own runner for an automatic out. Arno continued his good pitching form from the previous week and Matt pitched the last inning, showing how to fight back from disappointment. The first batter hit a slow roller to Matt and he hurriedly made a throw well wide of first base. Clearly frustrated with himself Matt then settled down to strike out 2 of the next 3 hitters before getting the last batter to hit a pop up into the safe hands of Harry for the win.
Ryack and William continue to do well as catchers. Offensively, we struggled with a number of called 3rd strikes but one highlight was Damon battling back from 0 balls and 2 strikes in the last inning to draw a walk. He was aggressive early and then patient enough to lay off the wide ones to earn a walk. As it turns out the game would have ended a draw had it not been for Damon reaching 1st base.
Thanks to Bill and Craig for umpiring and to the many parents who help out before and during the game. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Saints (11) lost to Sturt (13) at Sturt
Our last regular season game was played in beautiful conditions at Sturt – and many thanks to Bill Magoulianos for coming out and calling a great game from behind the plate – a treat for the lads and the spectators! (and thanks as well to Craig Ottaway for base umpiring!)
After a good batting practise on Thursday at Seaton tunnels we were looking sharp for this final Sturt head to head… but so were Don’s lads and it was always going to be a tight one!
Tom Bishop tried hard as starting pitcher, but some solid hitting by Sturt and some tough plays that “could have been” let them get 5… and then some good fielding and errant base running saw us out for none in the bottom of 1!
Stewart Gardiner threw our 2nd innings and despite starting with a strike-out then had control problems and in came the 5 runs again! We came back better this time with 3 runs back as the bats began to wake up.
Top 3rd and Peter Littleyuile did a great job - stopped them with 3 strike outs and no runs. Back we came with the bats and brought in 5… and the scores at 10 – 8 at bottom 3!
A thriller final saw Matthew Johnston the birthday boy start with a strike out, then finish with a strike out – stopping them for 3 runs and setting up a possible draw if we brought in the 5 runs. We gave it our best shot… and came up just short with 3.. but a top effort by all! Many thanks to all parents – scoring, ground set up and canteen!

Sturt 0 lost to Kensington 12
We went into this game with high expectations and the first half of the game was excellent from a scoreline point of view - 1-0 down and the game was in the balance. Ben Packer was controlling things from the mound well and the defense was getting the job done.
The second half of the game was a different story. The Kensington bats exploded to hit 4 home runs and the game was gone.
Unfortunately our baserunning was disgraceful and this changed the early offensive momentum we were creating.
We will bounce back from this loss as long as we keep learning from our mistakes.
Hits - Turner 2, Lee, Noble

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)
Sturt 12 defeated Woodville 2 (semi-final)
The Division 2 boys played a great game of baseball. Pat Burns did a great job on the mound and the boys were good with bats. Will Frogley had a great hit which brought runners home! In the end the mercy rule applied and we ended up winning 12-2 much to the delight of the Sturt crowd that had assembled to cheer on the boys! The Club song was sung with great gusto and passion in the changerooms after the game. Next Sunday is the next final when we face West Torrens at their home at 3.00 pm.

Division 4 (Coach: Peter Turner)

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke) Sponsored by: Tony Colyer Pty Ltd, Ace Panel Systems (Patron Saint)
With the turmoil of the week behind them, as the coach referred to Div 5 as a "pissant" team after their poor display last week and club management publicly showing support for the coach, this week was to be a make or break game. Not knowing whether we had 9 of our 18 squad available for the game made things even more interesting. However, with 3 Smalls we filled the spots including the reluctant coach after a big "Quiz Night" at the club. The scorebook result read Saints 24 to GGrove 10 with little else known about the stats as Jenny Small agreed to score with what can only be described as "creative scoring" - apparently all you have to do is colour in the pretty little circles. Anyway, Sluga started on the hill and after some erratic pitches decided that today wasn’t going to be his (still smarting from not wearing a box the week before), so off he went to 3rd bag - never to be seen again and Michael "Burner" Burns came on to the mound, throwing the rest of a sensational game. Shrek ably supported behind the plate, although at one point mistakenly strapped his shin guards to the bench making standing difficult and during our 12 run innings was 1st and 2nd outs. Everyone played well, the coach got 3 hits, and did I mention we had a 12 run innings (everyone needed oxygen running so many bases). Oh and Davey "Robert E" Lee nearly hit a home run, thanks to Jarrad and Trent for filling in once again and Burner for playing when he could and Smally finally swinging the bat. A fantastic result with even more to come next week with the "Pres" making his eagerly awaited appearance for the year.

Sturt lost their first game of the season to West Torrens 6-8. A few basic mistakes in the field and on base saw us go down in a close encounter. When we meet WT again in the finals we have to be better prepared for a high standard game. Last minor round game next week v Eagles.

With a finals spot up for grabs, we were completely dominated by a decent pitcher who was having a good day.We kept the game at nil all until 2 out in the third when we made several errors and the runs began to flow. After 5 innings we were 13 - 0 down and only one runner had reached base. In fact the Reds starter nearly threw 5 perfect digs giving up one walk and collecting 12 strikeouts and no hits! In the sixth he began to tire and they made a change which enabled us to score 6 runs but still without a single hit. At least we saved the shutout. Martin Kimber threw a steady game, Sam Osmond made some startling plays at third, Alex Furler took a pair of terrific outfield catches and Cameron Mackinnon took a great running foul ball catch at full reach. Nonetheless, a finals opportunity missed and on the wrong end of a no hitter made for a long and forlorn drive home. Final score Sturt 6 - Northern Districts 13.

Sturt 6 lost to Glenelg 9
Well a bit of shock for the boys this week as Glenelg had a gun pitcher that they hadn't seen before, a big strapping lad with a very fast and accurate pitch. (just returned from being away for 12 months). In the first 3 innings only 3 boys managed to make contact with the ball & only one of those a safe hit, but still no runs.
Unfortunately this undermined our confidence resulting in errors in the field. As always to the boys credit they fought back and finally started getting bat to ball and scored their first run. A change of pace with a new pitcher in the bottom of the 5th the boys really fired up and with some aggressive base running scoring a further 5 runs. We just needed that one more innings. Solid pitching by Josh Tindall for 3 innings with 7 strike outs holding the runs at bay and Lazar Losic continued the fine form in pitching with a further 3 strike outs.
Well done to Alex Renton-Milburn behind the plate.
Hitters were Josh Tindall, Lewis Brideson (2) and singles to Jayden Trembath & Miro Van Rensburg

Sturt 15 defeated Southern Districts 10

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulff)
In what was an important game for our boys they came out swinging to beat top-of-the-ladder West Torrens, 16-10. Both teams swung the bat well but our guys had extra incentive, pumped to be playing at Norman Reserve!

Lots of highlights with our pitchers doing their bit. Our catchers, Ryack and William, did a super job helping the pitchers focus as well as firing up the rest of the team. A special mention to Ron MacBeth, our specialist pitching coach, as this was quite the turnaround from the previous game when we struggled to find the strike zone.

A big key to this game, however, was our batting, suggesting the time spent at Seaton High School last Sunday was time well spent. Our boys collected 14 safe hits with only 2 strikeouts in 4 innings of play. Matt Amberg was a star for the day with a homerun, a triple, 2 walks, and a super inning as pitcher. Jack Dawson had 3 infield hits, Max Staggs had a homerun and William Hill had 2 hard hits. Ryack Parsons and Daniel Ortiz each had hard hit triples. Nick Evreniadis had a safe hit and 3 walks, scoring a run in each of his 4 at bats. Harry Tomlian also had a hit that would have taken the fielders glove off it was hit that hard!

Good batting, good pitching, and good baserunning, but there is work to be done with our fielding. A couple of costly errors by boys not putting their bodies behind a ground ball and then a fly ball could have cost us dearly but our hitting and pitching got us out of trouble. One of these days we'll put everything together and when we do it'll be a beautiful thing to watch!

I'd like to acknowledge Peter Gee for giving up some of his Sunday afternoon to let us use the incredible facilities he has at Seaton. Thank you also to Bernard, Mitch, Simon, Ralph, Zach, and of course Deb for their help before and during the game. I'd also like to pass on my condolensces to Jack Dawson and his family on news that his great grandpa, Bill Taylor, passed away during the week.

Saints U12/2’s (5) lost to Goodwood (10) at Goodwood
Although all 11 of the team were there in person, I suspect quite a few of the team mentally were still on sleep overs, at parties … or just still in bed!

Goodwood Indians needed to win this one to keep their finals chances alive – and they gave us a lesson in commitment, focus and determination …
from their warm up right through the day! (at 9am sharp, every one of their players was there ready to go!)

We are a better team than today – we can bat a lot better … focus and support each other more and our pitching was ….errant! To be fair, we are suffering from a lack of game and practise time over the last few weeks due to the heat … it showed! (On the plus side - if this was “the shocker we had to have” to stop our 6 game winning streak, it was a good time to do it) One more game and we’ll then be into the finals – fired up to deliver at a standard we all know we can!

Game 1
Sturt 5 defeated Norths 2
Per Sjors threw an excellent game against a dangerous Norths hitting line up. He pitched 6 innings and only gave up 1 run. The defense behind him was equally as good as the Saints turned up switched on and played very well.

Game 2
Sturt 15 defeated Norths 6
The bats were on fire early as Fred Hanvi got us off to the best possible start with a home run off the first pitch of the game. Another Hanvi home run in the 3rd inning pushed the Saints out to a 10 nil lead and the game was over. Ben Packer kept the Norths bats scoreless for three innings before Pat Burns, Dale Martens and Dan Lee combined to finish the job.
This was Fred Hanvi's last game for the club and i would like to take this opportunity to thank Fred for his efforts this season. He has been outstanding for Sturt both on and off the field and would be welcome back anytime! We wish you all the best with the Minnesota Twins this year. Thanks Fred.
Hits - Hanvi 4 (2HR), Young 3, Sjors 3, Roeger 3, Brice 2 (HR), Holmes 2, Turner 2, Faehse, Day, Lee, Evans, Passmore

On another note - I would like to congratulate Tom Winter, Stuart Crutchley and the B grade for finishing the minor round in 3rd position. This was an excellent effort but the job is not done. The Saints will face Woodville this Saturday at Sturt at 2pm in their first final. This is a must win game. Make sure as many people get to the club this Saturday to cheer the boys on to victory.

During the warm up we as a team discussed how this was a game that we woulkd love and could win as we havent had much success against East torrens in the past few years. Boy did that go wrong losing 20-3.Given the result we still came out of the game with some postives,we played 4 14yr olds and a 15 year old and they stood up only giving 1 strike out .Harrison Wood came in for only his 2nd div3 game and smoked the ball and was unlucky that both times the 3rd baseman didnt have to move , 1 metre either side and he would have got 2 safe hits.Justin Zak had a great day going 2-3 with a smoking double over centre right,he also had a great day at 2nd.Dylan Holt came in for his 1st game of senior baseball getting of to perfect start with a safe hit ,he also made a senational play at first. Sam Hollis hit the ball well with no luck as to did Dakota who also had a great day at 3rd. Well done to the juniors who played. Nick Tuffnell went to 2-3 and i thought pitched very well when he came in the 2nd dig but was very unlucky with alot of calls. Will Frogley was the surprise packet of the day not with the bat as usual but with the ball ,he came on to pitch in the last and did a fine job for someone who hasn't pitched for 12 years. Our next 2 games are must wins and losing is not an option so boys turn up ready to play.

At the East Torrens Redsox baseball ground on Saturday 14th February the Sturt Saints Division 5 baseball team participated in a match for premiership points with the game played in high spirits. On the batting side for the Saints safe hits were implemented by Messrs Small x 2, Colyer x 2, and Michael Burns, Sluga, Wulff and Day x 1 each. At the third completed innings the Saints led 5 runs to 4 with pitcher Sluga showing much talent on the pitching mound until an unfortunate incident occassioned damage to his nether region, much to the mirth of all that bore witness to the event. During the 4th inning the Saints manager constructed a pitching change by means of Small for Sluga, at the end of the completed innings the score then being Saints 5 to Redsox 12. Unable to manufacture any further runs the Saints eventually conceded one more run in the final innings to be defeated 5 to 13. No further comment is required !

Woodville 12 defeated Saints 2
Hey guys, well we got of to a reasonable start with 2 runs up on the opening bat and things went a bit skewed from there.
Not too many errors from our guys we just go out hit.
Woodville batted consistently throughout the game scoring 2-3 runs a dig and we just did not keep up.
Notables: good effort from Jason pitching the first few digs and Tommy closing for a scoreless last dig, with an excellent double play.
Jules out left field had plenty of running and a work out coming up with a couple of good catches.

Sturt defeated Golden Grove 20-1 at a windy Glenelg. Jai and David held the GG’s to 1 hit in 5 innings with 11 strikeouts.
Justin Zak and Harrison Wood led the offence with 3 hits each and Jai turned an inside the park home run into a triple by falling over half way to third – better check those cleats Wizz!
Two games before the finals and we need to keep the momentum going against WT and the Eagles.

Our team is like a box of chocolates you never know ........
This week the ready to play team turned up and boy did they, beating Adelaide 13-6 . It was 13-0 till the last. Jordan Wayne had the most outstanding game I have seen him play. Jordan tore the opposition apart on the hill throwing all 6 digs using only 83 pitches. He threw 19 balls and 64 strikes which included 8 strike outs.Jordys control was sensational he also went 2-3 with the bat.We all know you are capable of these kind of performances now its time you believed as well. Matt MacBeth had a stellar game in the box going 3-4 his season just keeps getting better. Brad Trembath caught a great game, he is really thinking about each pitch and location great job, Brad also went 3-4 in the box, great game Brad. James Snellgrove filled in and he also collected himself a hit, well done to Harrison Lightbody who also filled in and to did a great job. Dylan Holt & Jess Lemon collected a safe hit each. I think we found a spot for Dakota when not pitching at 3rd he made a few good plays and missed out by 1/2 a step on 2 more,D who has been struggling of late with the bat smashed a triple, 1 bounce into centre field fence. I have to mention Jarrad Small's effort at 2nd base on the weekend he was outstanding ,well done buddy. Let's finish the season off with 2 more wins and cement our spot in the top 4 , keep the good work going guys.

20 runs in 4 innings from 14 hits against a pretty ordinary opposition wasn't a bad outing leading up to Finals as we had to stay focused on pitch selection since we were up against a VERY LARGE strike zone. Some of the boys got some very rough calls but to their credit, they took it on the chin and just got on with it. We scored 5, 7, 4, & 4 with everyone picking up hits. We also played the field pretty well by hitting our cut offs and making the right plays.

Congratulations to Jayden Trembath, Max Guehrer, Henry Brennan (U14 Div 1) & Sam Cavanagh & Kris McArdle (U12's) on their 3 game clean sweep of the Little League Play Offs with the Southern Allstars. They will now go on to represent South Australia at the Australian Little League Championships in June.

Keep up the good work guys.

The Under 14 Division 2 team defeated Kensington 9 – 5.
The boys needed to win today to ensure that they stayed third and clinch a finals berth.
The team performance was close to their best for the season. Strong pitching from Joshua Tindall and Jayden Trembath kept us in front all day.
There were no errors in the field; we made the plays and we backed up the plays. A great catching effort by Alex Renton, he threw out 2 runners trying to steal third and one at second.
We hit the ball hard and picked up 11 hits along the way. The boys looked for signals when on base and then ran the bases aggressively to keep the pressure up.
Hitters were Lewis Brideson, Lazar Losic, Miro Van Rensburg, Joshua Tindall (2) and singles to Jayden Trembath, Errol Burns and Scott Wyatt.

Over this hot spell the Club was saddened to hear that Sturt Hall of Famer, pitcher and State Player, Perce Earle passed away. His funeral was last Wednesday and the Club placed a condolence notice in the Advertiser. May I also take this opportunity to extend the Club's sympathies to Perce's family on this sad loss.

Sturt 7 lost to West Torrens 8
Losing in the 10th innings on a walk off home run is never easy to swallow but there were lots of positives from the game which we will need to concentrate on.
Paul Mildren pitched 5 strong innings for the Saints and looks to be on top of his game again before he goes away with the Australian side in the next month.
Everyone contributed offensively and it was disappointing we couldn't get the job done in the field to snatch a win.
Everytime this young team takes the field we learn more about them as players. We learn what they need to work harder on, we learn how they deal with pressure and we learn how they react to failure.
The bottom line is there is no substitute for hard work and that is something this group will continue to do.
Hits - Lee 2, Roeger 2 (HR), Day 2, Sjors 2, Holmes, Faehse, Winter, Young

Sturt 2 lost to West Torrens 10
With so much to play for, this was a disappointing result. The lack of intensity and ability to execute set plays were the real concern and the players need to address this for the finals series.
The B Grade have now played there last minor round game and will finish 3rd. This is an excellent result for this group but now the real stuff begins. Each player in the group needs to lead and help each other focus on the task ahead.
This group is good enough to come out firing in two weeks time.

What a welcome relief to have some cooler weather and being able to get back onto the diamond.
After a 17 day break since we last saw a baseball, the boys managed to get off to a 2 run first dig thanks to a LONG HOMERUN from James Snelgrove.
He then threw about 10 or 12 pitches to clean up H&G to complete the first dig and we went from there.
We went on to score 1 , 7 & 7 to come up with 17 runs. We didn't have a lot to do in the field but the boys pretty well stayed focused for all of the game considering the opposition wasn't overly competitive.
Everyone swung the bat well and we can now focus on next week where another win will see us head into the Finals in 2nd spot and the Double Chance.
Let's keep improving from here boys.

The Under 14 Division 2 team lost to Golden Grove 11 – 13.
All though we didn’t come out winners the boys played some good baseball in a high standard game against the second to top team.
We were 7 – 6 up going into the last innings, unfortunately we gave away 4 walks, 2 errors and 4 past balls to allow them to score 7 runs.
As the boys have done all season, they rallied with the bat to score 4 runs in the last but just couldn't make it.
Well done to Miro Van Rensburg, hitting an in the park home run as well as a double.
Joshua Tindall, Brett Colmer, Tyler Lunnon, Henry Brennan and Lachlan Hooper also picked up safe hits.

Southern Districts 15 d Little League 2 - Sturt 14
In a slow game with lots of walks and hit batters Southern Districts ended up on top 15-14, scoring the maximum 5 runs in each of their 3 innings. Their 15 runs came with only 1 hit as we really struggled to throw strikes in this game, maybe a sign of little baseball over the previous 6 weeks. Whatever it was we will regroup before our next game. A valuable lesson for the coach in this game, as well, as we had our most consistent pitcher scheduled to pitch the 4th inning, but the problem was the game was slower than usual and we never got to the 4th inning!
There was some good signs with the bat as many of the boys had their sights in at the plate. Max with 3 hits and Daniel with 2 led the way.
We'll keep chipping away, with a focus this week on pitching, baserunning, and fielding.
As an aside, I'd like to acknowledge the great help and support while I was on holidays overseas. I could name many people but a special mention to Ralph Ortiz for coaching the lads over those 6 weeks and the support he had from Debbie Mackrell, as Manager, and others.

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Jamie Bishop) Team Sponsors: Watts Agencies & Brooks, Brownhill Creek Caravan Park
Lovely 25 degree day greeted us after weeks of heat. Also a giant treat to have Jim Davidson, one of SA’s most experienced umpires calling the game from behind the plate thanks to SABL!
Our near full strength Saints came out to make up for the loss inflicted by Glenelg last time they met. Peter Littleyuile started on the mound after a 6 week break – and although he had a bit of control problems, did a great job holding them to 1 run in. Tommy Bishop and Stewart Gardiner then both did very well pitching the 2nd and 3rd innings for no runs, and then Matthew Johnston came on with blisters to throw the final innings and only give up one run (which reverted when we did not bat the bottom of the last).
Batting was strong and disciplined against the variable Glenelg pitching – walks were taken when offered – and in particular, 2 hits to Tyson Ottaway and a terrific double to Ty Langford made for a one sided day.
Thanks to Jo and Helen for scoring pitch counts, and AJ and Craig for getting the boys warmed up and hustling!

Heat Policy for this Saturday

Our club has received the following advice from Baseball SA in relation to the heat policy for Saturday 7 th February 2009.

As you are probably aware the weather forecast is for hot weather this weekend.

The forecast temperature for Saturday is 41C – windy with a change developing.

We propose that Division 1 and 2 be played regardless as there could be a change coming in.

Division 3 to 7 will be covered by the Baseball SA Heat Policy; namely, no games if the temperature is forecast for 40C or above.

It would appear the temperature on Sunday will allow the junior grades to compete.

The forecast for the weekend as issued by the Bureau of Metrology at 4.05 pm Thursday is as follows:
Saturday Windy. Change developing. Min 32 Max 41
Sunday Fine. Partly cloudy. Min 17 Max 25

All Senior and Junior Games Cancelled this weekend!

Baseball SA have issued the following directive (see below). All Senior (Division 1-7) and Junior Games for this weekend are cancelled.

As most of you are aware I was one of the key people a few years ago pushing Baseball SA to adopt a Heat Policy. I have sent a note of congratulations to the Board of Baseball SA on their outstanding leadership on this matter.

Extreme weather conditions are forecast over the next 4 days with temperatures in excess of 40 degrees.

The weather report from the Bureau of Meteorology issued at 4:00pm today indicates this extreme weather will continue as follows.

Adelaide Forecast

Issued at 4:00 pm CDT on Thursday 29 January 2009

Friday Dry. Mostly sunny. Min 30 Max 42
Saturday Dry. Mostly sunny. Min 25 Max 40
Sunday Dry. Mostly sunny. Min 23 Max 40
Monday Dry. Mostly sunny. Min 22 Max 39
Tuesday Dry. Mostly sunny. Min 22 Max 38
Wednesday Dry. Mostly sunny. Min 22 Max 38

The Board of Baseball SA are concerned at the health and safety issue for players, umpires, volunteers and spectators this weekend.

We are an amateur sport and it is our duty and care to make sure our game is safe for all involved. Our litigious concerns are a priority and the safety for all is paramount.

As result of this forecast all games this weekend in both Senior and Junior grades are cancelled.

Week 14 + Div 1 Twilight Results

Earlier tonight (Tuesday 27 January 2009) in blistering heat the Division 1 Team played a twilight game going down to Port Adelaide 4-5 in a good game given the conditions. Brice got three hits and a home run and defensively the team was well supported with pitching from Per Sjors, Pat Burns, Craig Wright and Shane Horne.

The Australia Day weekend saw a unique combination of games with Division 1,2 and Under 18 playing on Saturday 24 January 2009. In addition to ensure the Little League Division 1 had enough games a triple header was scheduled on the Saturday! See Kris McArdle's match report for full details!

Dean Franke provides an amusing account of the fact that on Saturday Division 5 woke up to the fact that the team was not playing and that the hardest thing they would need to do all day is walk to the bar and support the Division 1 and 2 teams! From his account it seems that all played up well!

Congratulations to Paul Mildren and Tom Brice have been included on the initial 45 man squad to represent Australia in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

With two more games to go, we are in second spot and need to win these games to retain this spot. With our destiny in our own hands, it is time the boys worked a bit harder to get it right at the right time of the year.

The realisation of waking on Saturday morning and knowing that today we wouldn't struggle to get numbers, we wouldn't lose, I wouldn't forget the scorebook and that there would be no errors, meant that the dog wouldn't get kicked finally. Some of us mosied on up to the "Bigs" in the afternoon to lend our support, being Franke, Sluga, Burns and team manager Lee was already there. Unfortunately, even with our great encouragement, we couldn't get the boys over the line. Sluga and Franke, once again financially kept the bar afloat, then continued well into the night with best on ground performances. Sunday morning came around and there was no pain in the back, the, shoulder or the knees, however the head as usual took a pounding, very mental game this baseball. Back into it again this week with a solid hitout on the training track and bbq to prepare us for the rigours of our next game - hope you took Sam's advice and had your lamb on the barbie Monday ! - Please eat meat in moderation.

STURT 3 Def KENSINGTON 2 (Twilight Game on Wednesday 21 January 2009)
This game was a good 6 1/2 innings of junior baseball. Sure there was a few mistakes but everyone applied themselves well and tried hard all game from both sides.
James Snelgrove did a good job on the mound for us while throwing to Sam Gillespie, and Harrison Lightbody did a good job at 1st Base. Sam Roberts and Jayden Trembath played well at SS and 2nd while Max Guehrer chipped in with a few plays at 3rd. Tyler Lunnon, Derek Schnorr and Lewis Brideson all contributed in the Outfield with some nice catches and Lewis did well with backing up of 1st base on each play....................It's the little things like that which are going to get us over the line in the tight games. In the batters box, the hitting was OK so we can keep working hard on that BUT James Snelgrove hit a LONG HOMERUN that was gone as soon as it left the bat. He was also robbed of a homerun with his 1st at bat as the CF started right on the fence line only to take 2 steps to his right and catch the ball above his head..........Bugger but that's Baseball.
Let's look forward to our next game on Sunday against top side West Torrens.

Game 1 - Sturt 3 lost to GGCD 10
A disappointing outcome. Unfortunately no one came to play and we got what we deserved. Out pitched, out hit, out played.
Not many positives to come out of the game.
Hits - Roeger 2, Hanvi 2, Holmes, Frogley, Winter

Game 2 - Sturt 3 lost to GGCD 5
Needing to regroup quickly and salvage something from the day, Per pitched very well but lacked suitable support at crucial times from the field. Per pitched 8 strong innings without conceding an earned run.
Offensively, we couldn't bunch hits together and too much was left to too few.
The game went down to the wire but we still couldn't get the much needed win.
With personel starting to return from State trips, some changes are necessary to get back in the winners column against Woodville this week.
There is no substitute for hard work and a good attitude and that must start on Tuesday night at training.
Hits - Hanvi 3, Noble 2, Faehse 2, Evans, Turner, Roeger, Lee, Horne

Sturt 8 defeated GGCD 6
A great pitching effort from Rick Mitchell got the boys across the line. Everyone chipped in offensively with a number of players hitting the ball hard without luck.
The team needs to keep winning to ensure they have a shot at a top 2 spot for home final and a shot at a Premiership

On a perfect day for baseball at the seaside city of Glenelg and playing the second placed Woodville Senators, with us struggling to fill 6 places with regular starters, you could be excused for thinking that we all may have been better placed watching the planes take off on Tapleys Hill Rd. But oh no, such is the character of this mighty team that even with "fill in" sons playing, being Trent, Jarrod and Matt, we took it up to them with a last gasp 8-10 loss with scores tied going into the bottom of the last. Norman Bartholemew Sluga pitched a sterling game until a home run at the end spoiled his "show" and new found thing called "concentration" and Shrek behind the plate worked up a sweat, gloving nearly everything thrown at him, Jarrod made some exceptional catches at centre , as did Burner at left. Sluga attempted a low level nose dive in the first for an attempted catch and came up chewing chaff and Trent made a great throw to home to get the runner before he crossed. The coach was picked off at second as he had such a long lead the third baseman felt him breathing down his neck , but the old legs couldnt get him back to two in time. The older Small one came up with 3 hits as did Burner and little Matt (SOZ) "Son of Zulu" had 2 as did the coach. An exceptional game and one we really deserved to win.
Hits - C Small 3, M Burns 3, D Franke 2, M Franke 2, J Small 1, B Colyer 1, N Sluga 1
Thanks to all the kids who all played well

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin/Jason Hart) Team Sponsors: Force Access, Renaissance Limousines(Patron Saint)
Adelaide Angels defeated Saints 21-9. An interesting game seeing to cherry pitchers taking the field. I think they now realise that pitching is certainly harder than it looks. Great effort and a lot of fun with all the guys putting in with the bat.

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Jeff Nicholas) Team Sponsor:Freshwater Systems (Silver Sponsor)
Sturt defeated Saints 18-8 in the derby at Flinders. Saints tied the game at 4 all in the third but the Sturt boys were able to slip away. Thanks to Harrison Lightbody, James Snellgrove and Alex Furler for filling in, also batboy Mitchell Lightbody who came in when Jayden Trembath got a better offer from the Saints.
We have a week off to recover from our holidays before getting down to the business end of the season.

STURT 7 defeated by GLENELG 12
Unfortunately this wasn't the result we were looking for in our first game back from the Christmas break.
We managed to score 7 runs in the 2nd dig, mainly through walks, passed balls and the odd hit, only to give up 7 runs ourselves in Glenelgs next innings.
I hoped we would have hit our way out of the situation but we just couldn't manage to bunch our hits together which we have done quite well in the past.
Derek Schnorr, in his first game for the Club since arriving from the US on Friday and Max Guehrer, both came up with 2 hits a piece and there was the odd hits here and there.
Maybe this was the loss we needed to have to wake us up and get ourselves back on track for our push for Finals. I believe the boys now realise we need to work harder during the games and at trainings to be ready to play, we can't just turn up and expect to win each week.
Let's look forward to our next game against Kensington on Wednesday night at the Club and get back on track.

Under U14/2 - (Coach: Sturt Karen Tindall and Peter Duffield) Team Sponsor: Wendy's Burnside,Class A Jewellers
The Under 14 Division 2 team defeated Woodville 14 - 13.
We started the second half of the season like many other teams with 7 available players. A huge thank you must go to our stand in outfielders Todd McLean and Jack Morgan, who we recruited from a local tennis club. Their performance was outstanding.
The boys started where we left off last year playing good aggressive baseball and were 10 - 0 up heading into the bottom of the 2nd. From that point on we made many errors in the field and the hits dried up, to let them back into the game.
To their credit they made the outs when it was most needed in the last innings to win the game and leave Woodville with bases loaded.
Well pitched to Josh Tindall for 3 solid innings and to Lazar Losic for finishing the game off when we needed that something extra.
Lazar also starred with the bat picking up 3 for 3 including a triple. Hits to Sam Duffield, Brett Colmer, Todd McLean, Miro Van Rensburg, Alex Renton and Lachlan Hooper.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Kris McArdle) Team Sponsors: Hub Pizza Bar & Cafe, McArdle Family, Jock Gilbert Real Estate
STURT 8 drew West Torrens 8
With 3 regular players out today I wasn't sure how we would go, but credit to the team as we started the game on a roll scoring 4 in the first dig. WT fought back with 3 runs. Mitch lightbody held WT the next dig and we scored one run making it 5-3 our way. Zach Evreniadis pitched the third dig fighting hard and striking out one of their batter, unfortunately we gave WT the full 5 available runs making it 8-6. Zach Lunnon pitched and awesome game holding WT for three digs great job mate, Zach L also got a safe hit in our last at bat and then Zach E drove him home with his third hit of the day also forcing an error to score home and tie the game. All we had to do is get three outs in our last fielding innings, Zach E took the first out with an outfield catch making it look easy. Rueben Bishop then made the play of the year at short stop and the final out 1-3. This was definitely one of the best games of the year along with the last encounter with WT. Special mentions to Brodie MacBeth, Zach E and Charlie Goldworthy for a great day with the bat. Thankyou and top effort from Tyson Ottaway for filling in from Div 2. Ty didn't look out of place taking an outfield catch and stopping everything that came his way, also getting a walk from one of the best U12 pitchers going around. Well done team we are really starting to play to our potential don't get complacent boys keep training and playing hard and we will have a good finish to the season. See you all Friday 3 pm for training.

Saints (11) defeated Southern Districts(5) at Southern Districts
First game for the new year saw us short of players with 5 away! Many thanks to Eli Egglestone and Reuben Bishop for stepping into the breach - with their addition we still only had 8 and so the auto out rule made it interesting! Our pitchers did the job - Reuben started and although hitting the 1st batter, settled into striking out the next 2, then giving up a hit and a walk before finishing with another strike out to end the innings scoreless. Tommy pitched the 2nd innings and decided to outdo his brother by hitting the first two batters - but then went on to strike out 2 batters before finishing the innings with a pop fly at short to stop them for no runs in. Ethan Egglestone came on for the 3rd innings and tried hard, but control eluded him and allowed 5 runs in. Again Tyson Ottaway was a rock behind the plate! Southern Districts pitchers struggled to find the zone … and when they did Saints were punishing! Disciplined batting by all - with hits to Reuben, Tyson Ottaway, Tristan Boag and a great hit to Eli Egglestone his first ball game! Special mention to Tommy who hit a grand slam homer and 2 singles to finish a memorable day for him! Time ran out and we ended with 3 innings played, and a solid result for us! Thanks to Jo for scoring and Craig for getting the boys onto the 2nd game so quickly!

Week 12 Results

This week all our Senior teams recommenced after the Christmas break.

Over this time a number of our junior players have been representing our State in tournaments held around Australia.

During the week of 6th to 9th Jan, Baseball SA hosted a team from Japan being the IBA Tokyo Boys; the Sturt Baseball club filled 7 of the 19 team positions for the 4 game series with Henry Brennan, Matthew Franke, Max Guehrer, Lazar Losic, Sam Myers, Josh Tindall and Jayden Trembath participating and Dean Franke (coach) and Sandra Franke (scorer) also representing the SBC.

Due to the large number of players in the squad, each player only played roughly half a game per game. The first game, played at West Torrens on Tuesday saw a 3-3 draw with all Sturt players playing their part in the result with most getting safe hits. The second game at East Torrens saw IBA win 8-5 with Matt hitting and pitching well, Sam having a great day behind the mask, Josh getting a strong hit to leftfield , Max, Lazar and Henry batting well and Jayden applying himself in the field. The double header at Adelaide saw a game 1 win to the IBA once again in an extremely high standard game 3-0. Sam and Matt played exceptional in the field at short and third and both batted extremely well with strong hitting against strong pitching from the visitors. Game 2 saw a major blowout with the IBA posting a 12-0 win and clean sweaping the series with Jayden getting a strong hit to rightfield.

The series, although classified as friendly, was still keenly fought for country honours and the next step in all of the players development phase which can only be positive for both them and the SBC. Each Sturt player represented the club and themselves in an extremely competent and applied manner and are all to be commended.

Well done boys !

Sturt 24 defeated Woodville 14
In what came be best described as an interesting game, the good guys came away with the win. Giving up 12 runs in the first 4 innings put us on the back foot but offensively we were great. The boys maintained there discipline in the box and hit the mistake. This was great team baseball. Everyone contributed but special mentions go to Craig Wright for coming in and pitching 5 strong innings. Daniel Turner picked up 6 hits ( 4 real ones!), Angus Roeger and Tom Brice were all swinging the bats well. Welcome back Tom!
We have a very important double header against Golden Grove this weekend that will either make or break our finals chances. Please come out and support us this weekend with some very vocal support - it certainly helps the boys!
Hits - Turner 6, Roeger 4 (HR), Brice 3, Passmore 2, Holmes 2, Winter, Horne, Noble, Hanvi

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)
Sturt 5 defeated Henley & Grange 1
This was a big test in 2009 for our boys with 3rd playing 4th. The pitching for Sturt was outstanding as Dale Martens, Tom Winter and Ben Packer showing their best stuff.
The hitting was fairly lacklustre until the last inning when Josh Green, Adam Kerr and Dutchy came up with the goods to score 5 runs and win the game. We need to create and take more opportunities in the B grade. You can not rely on the defense to hold down a leading team in finals like they did in this game all the time. We need scoreboard pressure.
The B grade have a big chance at a Top 2 finish. We need to stay focused on the job at hand and lift our percentage over the last few games to give ourselves a chance of a home final.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell) Sponsored by: Premier Trailers
Hoping to start the new year as we ended the last was the goal but we ended up one dig short, going down to Goodwood 8-3. We were level for 6 digs 3 all. It was our hitting that let us down as we only collected 6 hits for the day, having Jamie Bushell and Cocko pitching should not have made a difference. In the field we were simply outstanding,Will Frogley again having a great day in the field and a huge day in the box going 2-4 including a triple ,and even his outs were smashed. Darren French also had a great day in the box also going 2-4 including a triple to right field,Frenchy has improved out of sight since coming back into the 3's. Stuey Crutchley and Jamie Knuckey also collecting safe hits each. Matthew MacBeth came in for his first Div3 game and boy did he deliver at 2nd base making some remarkable plays as well as 2 double plays. The boys persisted all day but things didn't fall our way with some unimpressive hitting from Goodwood and on the other hand I thought we still hit the ball hard. It was a great game better luck next week.

Division 4 (Coach: Peter Turner)
Sturt 21 d Goodwood 2

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke) Sponsored by: Tony Colyer Pty Ltd, Ace Panel Systems (Patron Saint)
With the sound of Cliff Richards' "Summer Holiday" still ringing in our ears and sand still between our toes, we may have been better served staying under the umbrella on the Silver Sands stretch with an esky full of tinnys and slapping on the sunscreen. However, we did show up contrary to the scoreline of Sturt 0 - Flinders 14 and although Saints Park did look a treat we just weren't up to the class of the number 1 team of Uni students. Ricky Ricardo as usual pitched his little heart out until tweeking a groin and left the hill after some good early fielding kept the visitors off the scoreboard, Burner then came to the mound and unfortunately at that point the floodgates opened and Flinders smacked anything he could throw at them. On the other hand we constantly hit straight to their field for easy outs. One of the highlights for the day was the action behind the rightfield fence which kept everyone guessing as to the score, its amazing the entertainment generated by a lovesick couple on a rug. Back to the game and Doc behind the dish was busier than a one legged cyclist as per usual, Sluga stopped everything that came his way and the coach magnificently threw to home to get a very tough out. With only 7 of our 18 man squad available we called on youth to fill the team with Trent Small, Justin Zak and Matthew Franke filling the voids. Only hits were to Michael "Burner" Burns and Matt Franke (yes you read right - his first senior time at bat) who also threw to the last 3 batters for 2 outs (proud dad), thanks to Tinny also for scoring at the end. Profoundly, we may have come away defeated but, ......but, .... yeh ok we got flogged ! - the opposition will be very nervous next week as we look for redemption.

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin/Jason Hart) Team Sponsors: Force Access, Renaissance Limousines(Patron Saint)
Div 6 East Torrens defeated Saints 12 – 1.
The boys held their own for a couple of digs keeping it 1 – 0 up. Some good batting by Eat Torrens in the 3rd and fourth dig saw them going up 12 – 1. Our guys just need to be a little more consistent with the bat. All the same, a good fun game and that is what it is all about.
