Sturt 3 lost to Souths 14
A very disappointing result given the bright start to the game. The boys came out swinging the bats well to grab an early 3-1 lead but the wheels came off to go down. This time of year will give many players some opportunities to play Division 1 baseball and they need to step up and take this challenge head on.
Dale Martens threw well without much support from the field at times and Tom Winter did well behind the plate in his first A grade catchers role.
We need to pick things up dramatically to be competitive against West Torrens on Tuesday night.
Hits - Turner 2, Holmes 2, Green, Winter, Holland

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)
Sturt 7 defeated Souths 5
Craig Wright did a magnificent job on the mound for the Saints, pitching all 7 innings. He was well supported by the field and got enough run support for the win.
Ian Evans batted well in his first game for the club this season, picking up three hits. Jarad Holland and Rick Mitchell also played well.
This is a great effort from the group when we are undermanned and shows the depth that is starting to come back to the senior ranks of the club.

Welcome to the Christmas edition of our weekly Newsletter. It is hard to believe we are half way through the baseball season!

The Saturday Games night went well! The set up of the room with a wide variety of games set up had to be seen to be believed! A big thank you to Darren Noble who did an outstanding job of organising the event. Well done Nobby!

The Junior Christmas Break up on Sunday night went well with a strong field of Little Leaguers, Under 14 and Under 16 competing in the Sturt Gift running race. A big thank you to Mal Watts, of Watts Agencies and one of our sponsors for providing the prizes for these races! Thank you also to Janet Young who organised the bread through Bakers Delight. Many thanks to Andrew Johnston who ran the BBQ for us! Special thanks to Trudy and David Lightbody who had overall responsiblity for organising the event!

Good luck to all of those players who have been selected in Under 14, 16 and 18 State Teams. We know that you will represent our club in the best possible way and we hope individually that you have great personal success during the tournaments.

Sturt 0 lost to Glenelg 10
A very disappointing way to end the first half of the season. A few adjustments had to be made to the team but this gave some guys an opportunity to step up to prove themselves at Division 1 level. Jackson Brebner Russ played his first A grade game and was commendable in the catching role. He picked up his first hit and will go on to bigger and better things with the Sturt Baseball Club.
Baseball is a game that can rely on momentum. Some poor decision making with our baserunning early in the game seemed to take the wind out of our sails and Glenelg took charge.
To play finals baseball, we need more contributions from more players week in week out. This contribution may come offensively or defensively, baserunning or just simply executing a hit and run but we need more. If you cant contribute then we will need to simply find players that will.
Other than a couple of bad games, the first half of the season has been excellent. The young players have settled in really well and have set the standard for what is required to be competitive at Division 1 level baseball. The comradery among the group is great to be a part of and i hope that helps carry us through 2009 on to bigger and better things!
Have a great Christmas and i look forward to seeing you all in 2009.

One of the greatest wins I can recall on the weekend defeating Kensington 10-0! We had many contributors, two players who stood out were Pat Burns and Ben Bicknell. Pat threw an outstanding game giving up just 2 hits for the day and they both came in the first dig. For an Under 18 to dominate last years Premiers the way that he did was something special. Pat didn't stop there he came out to bat and with his 1st plate appearance lined one up the middle. Ben Bicknell had a day out (what an understatement!)going 2-2 with a walk. Oh did I forget to mention the 2 hits were 2 massive homeruns opposite field. Shane Horne also had another day out with the bat going 2-3 with a walk. Darren French has rediscovered some form back in the 3's also collecting a double. Nick Tuffnell continued his consistant year also collecting himself a safe hit. That is now 4 wins out of our last 5 games and teams are starting to take notice, let's not get too get carried away and not let this hard work go to waste after x-mas.

Division 4 (Coach: Peter Turner)
Sturt 12 defeated Port Adelaide 2

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke) Sponsored by: Tony Colyer Pty Ltd, Ace Panel Systems (Patron Saint)
Div 5, wins again vs South 15-14 (no, not a misprint)
This week we packed up the 4x4's and the trailers and headed South, where we were stopped at the border and had to handover our contraband of Tequila. We all got there early (surprise) and I remembered the scorebook (amazing). Now the game went something like this 3-1, 8-3, 9-3, Sluga comes in 9-14, Sluga goes out 15-14 and a win, is there something in that, we presume so. What is even more amazing - check this out - Small and Lee 4 hits each (again, no not a misprint). We had the capacity crowd on the edge of their seats as Burner came in to close the game out after we hit 6 in the last to put our nose in front and the coach just happened to hit in the winning run with an infield fly (hmmmmn - not seen before in the modern game). Smally got dust in his eye at 2nd where he dropped the easiest of catches (its that last 3 feet that will kill you!), and brain faded on the bases to be left stranded and playing ping pong between 2nd and 3rd. Pop played exceptional at left, Doc again caught well with Ric doing a great job on the mound. Sluga had 3 doubles, Daisy got shot in the calf and Shrek is now having eye tests prior to future games at centre. We are now looking forward to the new year where the pre xmas hangovers will be much less influential.
Hits - Small, Lee 4, Sluga 3, Franke 2, Pop Burns, Burner, Trembath, Colyer 1

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin/Jason Hart) Team Sponsors: Force Access, Renaissance Limousines(Patron Saint)
Northern District 11 D Saints 3
Excellent match seeing Saints leading 2-0 for the first 2 digs. ND came back with 3 in the third. Saints tied in the 4th Unfortunately ND blew it out in the fifth with an 8 run batting stint. Saints never recovered.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)
Last game of the year and we play the top side who has only lost one game. After two and a half hours of play the final score was 5 all and the crowd and players had witnessed a great game of baseball by both teams. We started with Tom Teague on the mound and he did a good job giving up one run in two innings, Daniel Lee helping out for the day then went to the mound at the top of the third and held them scoreless for three innings. So into the top of the 6th and we where 1-0 down, with one out and loaded bases it was our chance to make so runs and Tom Teague helped out with a great hit to Right field to score two runs and put us in front by 1, unfortunately west Torrens then scored three to go 2 up. Daniel held them scoreless and they held us scoreless in the 7th so going into the 8th and final innings we needed to score at least 2 to keep alive. Sam Day also helping out was first up to bat and got on with a walk, he was followed by Alistair Young also helping out, he too got the walk, Daniel to the plate and with Sam on 3rd base and Alistair on 2nd base from a wild pitch Daniel hit a two base hit to centre field to score them and the game was tied. Daniel stole 3rd base and with one out he was the go run. Jayke Wayne hit to short stop to score Daniel and we ended the inning one run in front with West Torrens to bat. They made the one run to tie the game back up and that is how the game finished. Daniel threw 6 innings and had 11 strike outs and only 2 walks, Alistair was again great behind the plate and Sam was on first base. I would like to thank those three for the help and great game they all played. This was a game that both teams could have won but didn’t and all our boys did a fantastic job at some part of the game to keep us in it.
I would like to wish all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

After going down to the Eagles earlier in the year , we had something to prove and prove it we did smashing them 19-6. Dakota started the game on the hill and threw hard and shut the Eagles down but came down with an injury and couldnt continue we then pitched a different pitcher each dig and each did a fine job. Boy were the bats on, scoring 5 in the 1st dig we never looked back. We scored 3 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd then with no outs we mashed 9 runs with 11 batters. Our base running was aggressive which is something we have talked about. Sam Hollis had a massive day out going 3-3 with a walk and an in the park grand slam, Sam also had a fine day in the field. Matt MacBeth had another outstanding day in the box going 3-4 Matt's work at short stop was brilliant at times, he also came on and finished the game off on the mound without much worry. Jess Lemon collected himself 4 walks this kid has a great eye. Jordan Wayne came off the bench and went 2-2 this just what you ask of players whan they come in off the bench. Players who also collected safe hits were-Will Brennan, Bradley Trembath(who also caught a VERY good game)and Dylan Holt(who has had a great year so far). A great win boys time to step it up another notch again and make the 2nd half of the year our own.

14/1's defeated Woodville 8-3
The boys appeared to have gone on early holidays this week and struggled against a much lower placed team, James pitched well for 3 innings allowing few Woodville runners on and Matt followed up with a more than capable effort, but the infield, when put under pressure struggled to make the easy plays. Henry and Lewis helped out the 2's and played double headers, Max and Ryan had hits and James and Matt both hit well with multiple hits. Thanks to Tony for umpiring and we now go into the break in second spot, looking forward to the new year.

Under U14/2 - (Coach: Sturt Karen Tindall and Peter Duffield) Team Sponsor: Wendy's Burnside,Class A Jewellers
The Under 14 Division 2 team defeated Goodwood 18 – 8.
The first two innings produced great baseball with our defence on top, keeping the opposition scoreless and our batters going thru the line up twice picking up 8 hits and scoring 8 runs. For the next 1 ½ innings we lost our way. Poor decision making, and poor execution of plays, resulted in giving Goodwood 8 runs and allow them to tie up the ball game. To the boys credit they came back and shut out Goodwood and hit their way to another 10 runs. Before the game I asked the boys to bat the runners around the bases instead of stealing and they achieved this by amassing 15 hits. Well done. Hitters were Lazar Losic, Errol Burns, Josh Tindall (3), Sam Duffield, Lachlan Hooper (2) and singles to Hayden Emery and Brett Colmer. Good pitching by Henry Brennan and Josh Tindall.
On a sad note Hayden Emery played his last game for us, as his family are moving interstate. We all wish Hayden the best and thank him for his efforts and for being a good team player.

Saints (14) defeated Hawks(13) at Flinders
The total team turned out again for the last round of the year – it’s a pleasure to see it all just happen – parents and kids all switch straight on - stretches, warm ups, field set up, paperwork.. just a well oiled machine! We started with Ethan Egglestone – but a combination of very tough umpiring (I’m joking – his father Brett kindly agreed to do the umpiring for us!) and 3 good hits from them plus some walks saw the 5 run mercy prevail. We turned around and did it straight to them (including Ethan hitting twice in our inning) to level 5 all! Tommy Bishop threw the 2nd innings and came back well after some walks to strike the last 2 out and hold them to 3 runs. We could only manage 1 back to be down 6 to 8. For the 3rd innings we brought out Peter Littleyuile, and after an impressive 3rd to first out by Tyson Ottaway, Peter then K’d the next 2 batters for no runs in. Saints replied with a flurry of hits, walks and steals for the 5 runs in. Last innings Matthew Johnston tried hard, but control left him and 5 runs came in. So in the bottom requiring 3 runs to win, we looked set, but then the lobbing pitching style caused our usually strong hitters to strike out.. and things looked grim! But up came Ty Langford – and for the 3rd time that day, he calmly swatted a safe hit and brought home the winning run! I must also mention Connor Dyer’s huge improvement – 2 well hit doubles showed us he has got it going! Great effort all round! Thanks to Brett for umpiring this week and all the parents again… And from all Saints U12, thanks to all the committee – and especially to David Lightbody for all his efforts this year co-ordinating the juniors – and again hard at work at the Junior Xmas party Sunday night which was a terrific event and enjoyed by all!

Week 10 Results

As Christmas rapidly approaches I need to remind everyone about our two major Christmas events this weekend. On Saturday night we will have a Seniors game night and on Sunday we will have the traditional junior break up! You can read all about it below in our Social Calendar.
Our Division 1 team had a narrow loss on the weekend, but our Division 2 and 3 teams both won, so I believe at a senior level we are starting to see the benefits of all the work we have done with our juniors over a number of years!

We also had some great junior results on the weekend, which demonstrates that we have a great group of junior players coming through!

Baseball SA and MLB are excited in securing Major League Players Graeme Lloyd and Greg Jelks for our Training with the Pro’s clinic.
To be held at the Glenelg Baseball Club on 3rd January 2009 – 10.30am to 1.00pm (Sign in from 9.30am) – it offers our youngsters to opportunity to rub shoulders with Major Leaguers and South Australia’s finest current day players.
Graeme Lloyd is a Two Time World Series Champion with the New York Yankees and Greg Jelks tasted the “Show” in 1987 with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Both Graeme and Greg recently gave their time at the Sydney Training with the Pro’s during the Claxton Shield Showcase Round (click here to view the great pictures) and are enthusiastic at helping out at Glenelg.

Division 1 (Coach: Tony Catt) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)
Golden Grove 8 defeated Sturt 7
As Tony Catt was away with family commitments this weekend Darren Noble took the helm and was hoping to bring home the bacon. But it wasn’t to be! After controlling the game for most of the day we gave GGCD a sniff and they rallied to snatch the game in the bottom of the 9th. It was a harsh way to lose and it hit the boys hard, as it should. But there were some positives to take out of the game. Defensively the fielding was solid with Per Sjors pitching 7 very good innings, Paul Mildren had his first outing for the club this season and Ali Young was again proving to be a quality 3rd baseman. Offensively we put the pressure on in most innings and I was happy with the bunting & base running etc. But we lacked a killer instinct and a good rally when we had the momentum early to bust the game open. And Will Frogley showed that hard work pays off, with his debut A grade game this season as DH. As far as the coaching went... well...I have learnt some valuable lessons and Catty is definitely welcome back!

Make sure you get to the club this Tuesday night to see the boys bounce back against Kensington and to say farewell to Zac Stokes! Yep, he finally got his visa approved and is heading to the U.S to coach college ball next season (and to see his girlfriend). This man will be sorely missed around the club, both on and off the field. So show your support and let’s send Saint Stokesy off with a victory!

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter) Sponsored by: Ord Minnett (Major Sponsor)
Sturt defeated GGCD 13-5 (at GGCD)
With Tom Winter away Stuart Crutchley took the reins and steered his Saints home to solid victory.
Defensively, Pat Burns is working his way back after injury and pitched solidly with some good plays in the field to back him up. Offensively, there was consistent hitting with most players getting hits which created some good rallies. The team is looking good but still have lapses of concentration, which need to be weaselled out if they are going to be contenders. Div 2 have the bye next week but will be supporting the other Senior teams if required. Let’s make sure this winning form continues into the second half of the season.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell) Sponsored by: Premier Trailers
After a slow start to the year we have really started to hit our straps. After a disappointing loss to Woodville at the start of the year we came out to play this time around beating them 7-0.Shane Horne came down to div 3 so that he could have a swing of the bat a nd that he surely did , shane smashed it going 2-3 and a walk , he hit a double with his 2nd at bat and than smashed a triple with his 4th at bat.Shane didnt stop there , he dominated on the hill keeping Woodville scoreless and only receiving 4 safe hits , well done Shane. The outfield did an outstanding job once again with Ben Bicknell , Nick Tuffnell & Frenchy all doing an outstanding job. Ben Bicknell had a good day in the box going 2-4.Frenchy,Knux,Teagey, Sam Hollis all collecting safe hits (This was Sams 1st safe hit in senior baseball, he has a fine future).Kensington are next in our crosshairs , time to knock them off.

Division 4 (Coach: Peter Turner)
Sturt 7 lost to Adelaide 8

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke) Sponsored by: Tony Colyer Pty Ltd, Ace Panel Systems (Patron Saint)
Lost v Kensington 5-10
The Div 5 weekend commenced with a farewell to Junior, Tina and the kids at "The Ed" Fri night and through bleery eyes that matched the skies we fronted up Saturday morning after way too many reds etc to a very young Cardinals unit. With Junior's last game we gave him the match ball, stood him on the hill, faced him towards home plate and made him throw the leather thing at Doc. With what could have been a perfect farewell, that first innings was our undoing with some unfortunate fielding that gave them 6 runs. We fought back and actually outscored them for the rest of the game. Junior, once again had 2 solid hits, Rick pitched well until tiring and young Burner finished off the game well with Smally in between (with no comment necessary). Sluga had a day at shortstop and Dave Lee showed just what practice and confidence does to a rightfielder with 3 good catches, 1 being the casual play of the day. Doc stopped almost everything behind the plate but once again had that white line fever on bases with a rush of blood that made his feet take off without engaging the brain and young Burner is still looking for that grader to level out third base after some hot shots that hit different parts of his body.
Next week we look for a replacement for Junior to step up to the plate as he and the family will be sorely missed.

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin/Jason Hart) Team Sponsors: Force Access, Renaissance Limousines(Patron Saint)
Results from Div 6 13/12/08 Kensington 20 defeated Saints 5
Despite the score line, the game was tight and action packed for the first 4 innings which saw a score line of 2-5 Kensington’s way. A tight and tidy 3rd innings saw Jules and Ben peg 3 consecutive outs 5-3. Great pitching saw Trevor Hendry pitching the whole game to good effect. The fifth innings saw the dreaded error bug kick in and Kensington capitalised on it. The game blew out, heads dropped and the field began to look pretty ugly. Next week's a new game and hopefully the boys can get back to team work.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)
Sturt V Woodville Twilight Wednesday at Woodville
We travelled down to Woodville for a twilight and with some late phone calls we ended up with the required nine fit players playing. Thanks to Daniel Lee and Michael Robinson for helping out and to Sam Hollis (U16) for coming out with no notice at all. Jarrad Small (U16) started for us although he was injured. We had Tom on the mound and in the first innings we had three up and down while we made one run with Toby scoring off a two bagger from Daniel Lee. The game stayed that way until the third and Woodville scored three. So into the fourth no runs score by both teams. We went into the fifth and needed some runs and made two to tie the game up unfortunately for us we were held scoreless in the last and Woodville made one to win the game. We had a few errors in the field which helped Woodville and we had to many batters strike out with 8 k2’s. Michael Robinson and Daniel Lee teamed together for a great throw out at second with Michael putting the ball in Daniel's glove on the bag while the runner was a long way away. Final score 4 to 3
Safe Hits: Daniel 1, Michael 1

Sturt V Woodville at Sturt on Sunday
This week again we started the game with only eight players turning up and again with some phone calls we had Bradley Trembath (U16) turn up to help out but we started the game with Jay Lunnon’s little brother Tyler Lunnon helping out. He is an under 12 player and started at left field until Bradley arrived. Tyler took a great catch at left in the second innings to give us three out. This ball was hit high and with the conditions I know Tyler’s mother was not watching but I could see he had the catch all the way into his glove. At the bottom of the second innings the score was 1 all. Alistair Young and Sam Day also helped out on the day and did a fantastic job with Sam on the mound and Alistair behind the plate. The third we scored 2 and held them scoreless to be 3 – 1 up. In the fourth both went scoreless and in the fifth I thought we where going to self destruct again as we did on Wednesday night with Woodville scoring 3 from errors to go 4 – 3 up but to the credit of the boys they came out swinging and Woodville made the errors, Alistair hit a triple to score 2 and Tom hit to third to score Alistair to make the score 7 - 4 up at the bottom of the 5. Both went scoreless in the sixth and in the last we held them scoreless and made 3 ourselves again from a triple this time hit by Tom which scored 2 and Bradley had an RBI to score the third. Jay Lunnon pitched the last two innings to hold them scoreless with some fantastic pitching throwing to six batters and K2ing four of them. Sam Day through 5 solid innings for us. What a difference it is when we start to swing the bat and watch the ball all the way onto the bat we get safe hits and score runs, the boys need to keep this up to win more games.

Safe Hits: Young 2 (1 triple), Lunnon 1 (double), Teague 1 (triple), Wayne 1, Small 1

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Jeff Nicholas) Team Sponsor:Freshwater Systems (Silver Sponsor)
It was a case of the walking wounded on Sunday at East Torrens. Sturt arrived for the game with the bare 9 including Justin Zak who had been up half the night (and looked like it) and David Nicholas who could not throw and had to swing with one hand due to a tendon injury.
Just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse, Jarrad Lobasso dislocated his knee in the warm up and had went for some tlc and crutches at Sportsmed. We dragged Pappsy’s mate Jamie out of the crowd, put a glove on him and stood him in left field.
Jai shut out the Sox, Jamie hit a couple of cricket shots and we fleshed out a gutsy 7-0 win.
With a bye next week, we go to the break 10-0 and with some continued hard work should have a good shot at the finals.
Happy Christmas to all – have a great holiday

Under 16/1 Saints (Coach: Rick Mitchell)Team Sponsor: National Tool Distributors Pty Ltd
After a great start we were only down 3-2 after 4 we were still in the game and West Torrens were getting nervous but,we stopped, we must of thought the job was done and at this level if you stop playing teams like this will run over the top of you and they did going down 10 - 2 in the end. Dylan Holt did an outstanding job on the hill in the first 4 digs giving up 5 safe hits and as a 1st year under 16 pitcher he is out doing himself this year, great job Dylan. Dylan also crunched one up the middle for a timely safe hit which also scored a run.Matt MacBeth & Jess Lemon were the only other two to get safe hits. I know and the boys know we are a way better side than this, we let fat too many strikes past with 5 KC's. We play the Eagles time for us to knock a team off in the top 6 lets go boys.

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Glen McDonald) Team Sponsors: Class A Jewellers
Norman Reserve seems to bring out good things in our team as we surged to a very convincing win. We gave up 3 runs in the first but replied with 9 of our own to set the Rams on their heels from which they never recovered. We made some errors in the field but managed to limit the damage with the highlights being a Martin Kimber basket catch at centre and a Paige Mattsson to Tim Kimber to Hamish Straatman relay that got the greedy batter out at second. What we do at training will happen in a game. Brett Mulryan was a late choice to start on the mound and threw 4 no hit innings and even picked off to first several times which made me very happy. Admittedley their pitching was lacking but we banged out 12 hits to 3, the stars with the bat being Cameron Mckinnon 3 hits (including a triple and a double), Matt Franke 3 hits, Alex Furler 2 hits and Brett Mulryan 2 hits. Thanks Matt for helping us out and to Dean Franke for base coaching. Final score Sturt 21 - H&G 8

Twilight Wednesday 10/12/08
The under 14 Division 2 team defeated Goodwood 20 – 8 in tough windy conditions. The boys have won their last three games and are continuing to improve each week. We amassed 12 hits and only left one runner on bases, whilst only making two errors in the field.
Hitters were Tyler Lunnon (3), Brett Colmer, Josh Tindall, Hayden Emery (2) and singles to Miro Van Rensburg, Scott Wyatt and Lewis Brideson.
Tyler Lunnon pitched for 3 innings picking up 8 K2’s and only giving them 2 walks and 4 hits. Lewis Brideson finished off the game also throwing well into the wind.
A good team effort. Well done boys.

On Sunday the Under 14 Division 2 team defeated Henley & Grange 17 – 4.
The boys have won their last four games, however we still need to improve if we are to be competitive in the top four.
We started poorly and found ourselves down 0 – 4 after two innings, but the team showed great character to hold the opposition scoreless while amassing 14 hits and 17 runs in the next three innings to win convincingly.
Well pitched by Josh Tindall for shutting down Henley & Grange for 4 innings and to Alex Renton for his continued good work behind the mask.
Our infielders executed two double plays that were superb to watch and with the outfielders backing up all plays we looked a slick outfit.
Well done to Lazar Losic and Miro Van Rensburg for inside the fence home runs.
Our hitters were Lazar & Jayden Trembath (3), Brett Colmer, Miro, Lachlan Hooper (2) and Sam Duffield, Hayden Emery, Josh Tindall and Errol Burns (1).
Keep up the good work boys, well done.

We got the job done today. Well pitched by Mitchell with a very high strike rate and three up three down for two digs, Zach E also did his job holding Southerns for two digs. Zach L also held them out for one dig and Fraser got his chance to pitch and showed us all he has the goods. Fielding was good with only one error, great outfield catch by both Fraser and Stuart, well done behind the plate to both Jordan and Brodie. Thanks to all the boy who sat on the bench without any complaints. Batting today was the only thing I thought we could improve on, plenty of hits but not many out of the infield, Charlie like usual batted well and I thought Stuart also batted well. Good game boys we got the win, one more game and HO HO HO.

A full team of 11 again reflected the enthusiasm of both players and parents as we again got down to business – set up, warm up and hit out all going like clockwork.
We mixed the pitching order this week and Matt Johnston led us off with a good effort allowing only one run in - our 2 lead offs both got k’d and things were grim… but then Matt started the hit rally and the next 7 batters all got aboard with hits and disciplined walks – only a close play at home stopped us getting all 5 runs in – we ended the innings 1 to 3 up.
Eagles then answered with 4 hits as Tommy Bishop tried his hand to contain them from the hill, but they kept coming and took 5 runs. which we answered with 2 runs.
So 1 run down into the 3rd, where they again hit well against Stew Gardiner who lacked the control he’s been showing the last few weeks – and 5 more to them.
We then came back with 5 runs to make it 11 -10 down going into the last innings. Peter Littleyuile pitched the last and was looking a little errant – but then James Davidson made a spectacular double play and then after a couple of walks, Peter stopped them for no runs. Saints then came out and Peter did the job with a stand up double to level, and then Matt J finished them off with a single to right field.
Hits – doubles to Tommy, Stewart and Peter and singles to Matt, James, Ethan… and Connor and Tyson again great stuff behind the mask..
A tough day at the office, but a good win all things considered!
Thanks to all parents again – especially to Craig Ottaway again taking on the umpiring when our SABL allocated umpire failed to show.

Another hard day at the office with our Division 1 side going down to Glenelg in both double header games and also the surprise loss of our Division 2 side to Glenelg! On the brigher side our Division 3 side played really well and ended up mercying Henley and Grange 11-1. Well done boys!!

Further to my previous notice in respect to the passing of Trevor John Stewart I would like to convey the club sympathies to Trevor's other son, Warwick and his wife Tricia. Warwick also played for many years for Sturt, so our thoughts are with Warwick and Tricia along with Neil, Meredith, Steve and Darren at this sad time.

The Sturt Baseball Club also extends its sincere sympathies to David, Rita and Paul Mildren on the unexpected death of David's father and Paul's grandfather, Frank.

In the Claxton Shield on Saturday, the Victorian Aces continued their push towards a record 22nd Australian Baseball Championship with a comfortable 8-0 win over South Australia at Blacktown Olympic Park. If you want to keep up with all the information on the Claxton Shield you should subscribe to the ABF Newsletter which will provide you with in-depth reviews of all the games played.

On a brighter note Lars Olof Sjörs, father of our recent Swedish import Per Sjörs, has recently emailed us his Swedish baseball site with the following message, "I am just sending you a link to my pages here in Sweden where I have som pictures and amateurvideos from games and other practises in Swedish baseball, and mostly from the Leksand Lumberjacks baseballclub. I just want to show you this site of Swedish baseball and I was thinking that it would be a little bit of fun and maybe be of some interest for some of your Australian baseball fans… to see that we also play baseball up here in the north."

Game 1 Sturt 1 lost to Glenelg 7
After piling on the pressure early in this game, we were simply not able to turn opportunities into runs. Against the top teams, you need to take your chances or you will suffer the consequences.
Per Sjors and Dale Martens pitched well and from an offensive standpoint we were just dead unlucky a lot of times. The scoreline certainly did not reflect the closeness of this match.

Game 2 Sturt 1 lost to Glenelg 12
The bats never got going and the pitching was below our best. This really sums this game up. You only need to be slightly off your game against sides like Glenelg and they make you pay. We certainly paid.
Everyone felt very flat after the game and we need to pick ourselves up and work twice at hard at training to erase that last game from our memory. Take it out on Golden Grove this Saturday!!!!
Make sure you get out and support the team if you can this Saturday, Paul Mildren will be making his first start for the club for 2008/09.
Hits - Brice 2, Lee 2, Roeger

Sturt 3 lost to Glenelg 10
Again, this game was much closer than the score reflects. We were leading 3-1 early and then gave up a couple of runs to be tied 3 all in the sixth. Then the wheels fell off. Glenelg piled on 7 runs in one inning to take the wind out of our sails. This was a major wake up call to the B grade. This would have taught them to turn up with their best game and to concentrate for 2 hours or good sides will make you pay.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell) Sponsored by: Premier Trailers
Great win against Henley & Grange 11-1. Again we played the entire game and not lapsing into our 1 dig nap. Well done to Sam Hollis who played his 1st senior game and did an excellent job on 1st base. Will Frogley turned up ready to play as he always does doing a great job at short stop and was outstanding again in the box going 2-3 with a sac fly. Josh Green also going 2-3 has become a consistant hitter. Michael Robinson I thought called an outstanding game behind the dish. Nick Tuffnell had a great game in the field and an even better one with the bat, he went 3-3 with a walk hitting the ball extremely hard. Ben Bicknell hitting the right field fence for a stand up double getting his weekly hit. We are showing some really good signs of late winning 2-3, time to keep going. Thanx to Jamie Knuckey who was a massive help on the bench. Thanx to all the supporters who came to watch it was great to have such good support.

Lost V Goodwood 1-6 Rick was pitching a great game from the outset throwing 4 innings for only 3 runs, Doc was consulting from behind the plate and Sluga was snaffling everything at short, however, with the bat we were unable to overcome the Indian pitchers, even though the cowboys came to fight. We were ambushed from every side and with our guns only firing blanks we were no match this week and ended our winning streak of 2, way too easily. Even using secret weapons Small and "Wild Thing" Sluga on the mound didnt stop the Indian attack and our bats only worked in the hands of the Wulff, the Sluga and the Angel. Robert E Lee pulled a catch at left (finally, just) and when the coach smashed a ball to right only to be thrown out 9-3 the writing was on the wall , it just wasnt going to be our day. With the peace pipe smoked early, we watered the horses, saddled up and slowly meandered into the setting sun, another day done.
Hits- Wulff 2, Sluga 1, Angel 1

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin/Jason Hart) Team Sponsors: Force Access, Renaissance Limousines(Patron Saint)
Well we have had our first non loss for the season. Saints drew with Northern Districts 6 all. Northern Districts came out strong in the first innings scoring 5 runs. Jason Hart came on the mound and he and the boys did an exceptional job at keeping them to 1 run for the remainder of the day. All the guys came out well in the 4th innings putting on an additional 4 runs on to the earlier 2 scored. The final innings saw neither side put any additional runs on the board. Excellent team effort with better things to come.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)
Sturt V Northern Districts 7-12 down
Well what a difference a week can make from beating the top side last week to losing to one of the bottom sides this week. We did not turn up today with our game face on and it showed in the field and batting box. We had 7 fielding errors which does not help your pitchers. We started with the bare nine and with Bradley taking the nail of his finger put him on the bench leaving a hole in the outfield and North’s hit to the hole. Jay again battled hard on the mound throwing strikes for them to hit. Jayke came in to finish of the game. Our base running was disappointing and some of our batters struggled again to hit the ball. Some of the boys must work on their batting if they are to start to get some safe hits. We must bounce back from this game for our twilight Wednesday night against Woodville to get back in the winners circle.

Under 16/1 Saints (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
After a hiccup Wednesday night losing to GGCD 7-8 away in the last dig it was time for revenge as we played them again Sunday home, and the boys were fired up (as fired up as these boys can get anyway)with a 9-0 win. The first thing I have to say is just what a dominant display Dylan Holt showed on the hill, his pitching was outstanding, rarely missing a spot giving up 2 hits in 5 digs. Dylan was backed up by a very solid field. Matt MacBeth did a fine job behind the dish, he also went 1-2 with a walk. With great team batting we laid down ground balls to move runners and 2 sac flies by Brad Trembath and Dakota Mitchell to score runners on 3rd, great job boys. Bradley and Sam Hollis also going long to get a double each. Ben Young came on to relieve for Dylan for 1 dig throwing 10 pitches for 3 outs both he and Jarrad Small collecting a hit each. Jordan Wayne had a stellar day at 3rd I have never seen anyone have so much time to throw the ball. We have won 4 out of our last 5 games we just need to keep focus.

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Glen McDonald) Team Sponsors: Class A Jewellers
A very tight, close game was highlighted by good pitching performances on both sides. Runs were hard to come by and it came down to who made the most of their opportunities. Some lapses in concentration saw us 2 runs down in the last innings. We scored 1 and had runners on 2nd and 3rd but couldn't push them across. Martin Kimber did a great job on the mound going 4.2 innings using only 68 pitches (44 strikes, 24 balls). Paige Mattsson had 2 hits (but was unfortunately picked off twice) , Justin Zak drove in 2 runs and made numerous plays at short and Brett Mulryan had a strong game behind the plate throwing out a runner at third. Overall it was a fairly well played game but there was little energy shown in the dugout in a game that was there to be won. A big thanks to Jarrad LoBasso and Justin Zak for helping us out and to Paul Mckinnon for umpiring.

STURT 12 def GOLDEN GROVE 5
Going into this game we had a few distractions with James Snelgrove unavailable with a rolled ankle and Sam Roberts going down with Glandular Fever. This brought us back to 9 players with everyone needing to lift a notch or two to cover for our losses and to all the boys credit, they all contributed that little extra as the game progressed. After a sluggish start in the batters box, the boys pulled together and got back on track scoring 12 runs in the next 4 innings. All the boys contributed in the batters box and to Sam Myers, well done on your 1st over the fence HOMERUN. Matt Franke did another good job on the mound for us and was well relieved by Henry Brennan who came in for his first pitching stint in U14 Div 1.
After a quick reminder on cut off's and knowing where to throw the ball before it's pitched, the boys continued to make the plays with Ryan Dijksman and Lewis Brideson having a day out in the outfield with some nice catches. It was a good team effort and we can see the improvement in the players as the weeks go by.
Keep up the good work guys.

Under U14/2 - (Coach: Sturt Karen Tindall and Peter Duffield) Team Sponsor: Wendy's Burnside
The Under 14 Division 2 team defeated Glenelg 13 – 4.
The boys were given a challenge before the game to win the four remaining games before Christmas and they have started well. We went into the game equal on points with Glenelg and needed to win to maintain our 4th position on the ladder. There was a great improvement in the batting box and in the field this week, although we still let ourselves down by leaving 7 runners on bases again. Lachlan Hooper returned to the mound this week and held the opposition batters to 4 runs in his 3 innings before Josh Tindall came on to shut them out for the last 2 innings. Good batting by Brett Colmer (3), Sam Duffield and Lazar Losic (2 each) and singles to Miro Van Rensburg, Lachlan Hopper and Scott Wyatt. Hayden Emery, Errol Burns and Alex Renton all contributed to a great win. Well Done.

Saints (8) defeated Sturt (4) at Flinders
The signs were all there – (nearly) every lad was there early or on time… warmed up well as a team and a welcome improvement from last week!
A hesitant start – a good play from them, then a couple of walks for us, and then a double play stopped us with no runs.
Peter Littleyuile started for us on the mound – and as usual he tried his hardest putting in everything he had.
Perhaps too much – he had to come off with a strained rib muscle! So Reuben Bishop stepped in to finish off the innings and did well keeping it to 3 runs in.
We came back well in the 2nd and tied it up at 3 all after a couple of walks and a hit from Stewart – finished with a big play at home when Tristan collided with the catcher and had to come off with a sore shoulder.
Then Matt Johnston came onto to throw the bottom of the innings and did very well and stopped them for no runs (including 2 K2’s!)
Top of the 3rd and we hit our straps with 5 runs in… and then Stewart Gardiner took the mound for the bottom of the 3rd – started with a k, then gave up a hit and then another k…. and then 3 walks before he shut them down – allowing just 1 run in.
And that was it! - the 90 minute time rule took effect and it was all over!
Hits included a great double from Angus Read down the right field line in his only at bat. Tyson Ottoway also crunched a good double over centerfield, with 2 singles to Stewart Gardiner and one to Peter Littleyuile. With only 3 innings the boys did well to take walks when offered and not swing at silly stuff.
Good catching by Connor for 2 innings and Tyson Ottaway for the 3rd.
Not a pretty win, but a solid display from a team that came to play today! Well done Saints.
Thanks again to Craig who stepped in for Sturt to umpire – and the penciling team! (Jo, the scoring book is a work of art!)

The tone was set for the game very early on with some excellent pitching from Ben Packer and some great offense from Paul Holmes.
Ben Packer did an excellent job through 5 innings before handing the ball over to Shane Horne who got the job done. It was great to see Fred Hanvi hit his first home run for the club and to see Tom Brice pick up 3 hits as he slowly finds his groove.
Ali Young also did an excellent job behind the mask and came up with a couple of clutch hits to help us get across the line.
This was a match we had to win and did. We now look forward to a BIG double header against Glenelg next weekend. Make sure you come and support us down at Glenelg.
Congratulations to Angus Roeger on his selection in the SA Claxton Shield side. He is part of the future of baseball in this State and after all the hard work he has put in during the last 12 months, he thoroughly deserves his spot. Good luck Angus.
Hits - Holmes 4, Brice 3, Hanvi 2, Young 2, Stokes 2, Winter, Lee, Roeger, Turner.

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)
Sturt 13 defeated Norths 1
In what can be best described as a waste of time, this game was wrapped up in the minimum time of 85 minutes, we threw 42 pitches and Norths got 6 outs.
Some of the positives from the game was the welcome return of Pat Burns to the mound who looked strong, Stuart Crutchley picking up 3 hits in his return to senior baseball and the fact we won.
This week we face Glenelg in a return to the place we got knocked out of the finals race last season. The boys will be fired up to make amends.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
4 earned runs each should mean a close game but the final score was 11-5 down. We knew that East Torrens were going to be a good hitting side, it was up to us to step up and show what we were about. I thought we did collecting one extra hit than them 10-9 and we got 3 walks each. The difference was they converted base runners better. Josh Green collected himself a triple,Adam Kerr,Jamie Knuckey,Dakota Mitchell,Nick Tuffnell,Tom Teague and Michael Robinson all collected a safe hit each. Ben Bicknell went 2-3 with a walk nailing a double opposite field and having an outstanding day in centre field. Michael Robbo was back after a week of schoolies and did a fine job at 2nd. Knux had a geat day in the field starting behind the dish then moving to 3rd. Nick Tuffnell came onto the mound and shut E.T. down in 2 1/3 digs, they only got 2 safe hits off him he has been outstanding of late in the closing position.Again it was one bad dig that cost us.

Division 4 (Coach: Peter Turner)
Sturt 9 drew with Northern Districts 9

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke)
defeated GGCD 12-8
The sun was shining brightly this wonderful Saturday afternoon at the panoramic Norman Reserve, home of the mighty Saints and the Division 5 boys came out to play in the sunshine. With starter Small on the hill firing rockets from the first batter it was clear this was to be our day as Shrek gobbled up everything behind the dish and the bats finally talking more than the oppositions'. Junior had a day out with 3 hits and made some handy catches at centre (once he worked out Slugas' "back" actually meant "stay"), Sluga came in to relieve the tiring Small in the 3rd and pitched with his usual relaxed style to mostly hold out the "huge" GGCD batters and field a couple off his shins. The coach put his neck out swinging at a high pitch and had cement shoes at 1st at one point, D Lee came off the bench to show us how to hit the ball twice and Pop batted in some runs with some timely ground balls that confused the fielders. Shrek picked himself 3 walks and was unlucky with a line drive to the pitcher. The entire team, however, contributed in some way. All in all it was just a wonderful day for baseball and finally the coach got to taste success of his own accord. We're on a huge roll now with back to back wins against quality opposition and climbing ever so slowly out of the mire and into the pointy end of the table. Although we will miss Junior when he goes.
Hits - Angel 3, Day 2, Lee 2 (1x2), Sluga 1 (HR), Franke 1 (1x2)

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin/Jason Hart)
Saints 10 lost to West Torrens 21
An interesting game which saw the bats working overtime. Saints started exceptionally well holding West Torrens down for four innings. A dismal innings in the fifth saw West Torrens score 11 runs shattering Saints resolve. Well, there is always next week. The good thing is there is improvement in the batting and the fielding. We just need to get them working on the same week.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)
We played the top team Glenelg at home this week and with the Div 1 & 2 to follow wanted to start the day on a high. We were down to nine players with Jayke Wayne away for the weekend and things did not look good in the morning as Toby Cantrill rang in sick. I had to make some quick phone calls in the morning and a big thanks must go to both Daniel Lee and Alistair young, through the week Daniel had offered to come out and help on the bench and Alistair agreed to umpire on Friday night but with Toby sick Alistair played and Daniel umpired and Daniel did a fantastic job.
Tom Teague started on the mound and he is getting better and better with every outing throwing 90 odd balls for no runs through 5 innings while we were scoreless through 3 innings. Jake Borlace had a lovely hit to centre left to score two runs in the 4th for us and we again scored two runs in the 5th from an error at right field with Trent Small batting, so at the top 6 we are up 4 to zip. Jay Lunnon relieved Tom on the mound and as usual got us the ground balls and fly balls we needed to get the outs with Glenelg scoring 1 run, so going into the top 7 with ten minutes to play all we had to do was bat and with our third out time and game was called with Sturt winning 5 to 1.
Alistair Young was behind the plate and did a fantastic job, Jay Lunnon worked hard all day as always, Jake Borlace was good after a miss field he kept his head in the game to make an out later and have that great hit to score runs, Fraser Dawson and Matt Mulryan did the job in the box when asked to bunt, Beau Pelgrim took some great catches at centre field to help Jay out, Tom Teague got us the start we need on the mound and Trent and Bradley did the team thing all day. A great win and great confidence booster for the boys to knock of the top side.
Safe Hits: Lunnon 2, Teague 2, Young 1, Borlace 1

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Jeff Nicholas)
Sturt swooped on the high flying Eagles to post an 11-1 victory at Flinders. Although we didn’t play at our best, we did enough to knock the Eagles off the perch at the top of the ladder.
JBR continued his great form with the bat with 4 hits including a (blooper) home run over center field. David Nicholas did the job on the mound giving up 3 scattered hits and striking out 5. Whilst we played reasonable baseball, we still need to work on some basics to put us in serious contention for the finals
Hits; Brebner-Russ 4 (hr) Nicholas 2 (hr) Young, Zak, Redigolo, Wood, McFarlane

Under 16/1 Saints (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
Great game of baseball, we were switched on from warm up until the final pitch. We went out to Kensington set for a tough game and smashed them 11-3. Dylan Holt pitched an outstanding game giving up 3 hits in 4 digs.Dylans pitching has come along way this year and is becoming a very fine pitcher. Matt MacBeth came on for his 1st pitch of the year and did a great job not giving up a hit in 2 digs. Not much to report in the box as we didnt see many strikes getting 7 walks in 3 digs, what we did well was convert base runners into runs. On base we were outstanding. Sam Hollis and Jess Lemon both collecting single base hits.A great win and a very good job in the field the back up Dylan and Matt got was outstanding. Lets keep building on these 3 wins.

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Glen McDonald)
Sunday 23rd November 2008 - Final Score Sturt 11 - GGCD 5
Our game with Golden Grove Central Districts was played at Kensington which thankfully saved us the water bag trip to Surrey Downs. Jack Colmer started on the mound striking out 5 batters, allowed only 2 hits but issued 8 walks and 1 hit batter! This led to only 5 runs which to me was an indication of the field holding up under the pressure of runners on and the steady improvement we've made in this area. Brett Mulryan had a good game behind the dish and capped it off with 2 lovely outfield line drives. Getting picked off third wasn't his greatest moment though. Cameron Mckinnon hit a long centrefield double that fell only a couple of feet short of a homerun and Sam Osmond made several stellar plays at second base. The story of the day though belonged to Hamish Straatman who came in to pitch for the first time this season. With 2 out in the bottom of the third, he got his first batter to ground out on one pitch to end the inning, then went on to pitch 2 more scoreless innings. It was a decent all round effort but we have some tough opposition coming up and we will need to keep our heads in the game.

Sunday 30th November 2008 - Final Score Port Adelaide 13 d U16/2 - Sturt 7
A lethargic effort today proved very costly for us which was most disappointing as the past two weeks had been full of merit. Our pitchers couldn't find the strikezone ( 14 walks ), poor decision making in the field and some missed outs was our undoing. To Port's credit they were far more ready to play and executed their defensive game well. Cameron Mckinnon continues to play well at first base and had a single up the middle to bring home two runs. Tim and Martin Kimber and Jack Colmer had a hit each and Alex Furler a triple. In fact we only batted through the lineup twice and scored 7 runs so that was at least one positive aspect. I hope the team realises they have to bring the right mental approach to every game no matter where or what time it is. Thanks to Kerryn Colmer for scoring and many, many thanks to Darren French who came down to Glenelg at the last minute to umpire our home game.

26th Nov Twilight Game
STURT 15 def SOUTHERN DISTRICTS 6
The boys kept going from where they left off against Kensington with the bat by scoring 15 runs in 5 innings. James Snelgrove went 4 for 4 with a GRAND SLAM to left field and narrowly missed a 3 run homer to right field which hit the fence on the full. Matt Franke pitched well for us while Sam Myers did a good job for us behind the mask.
Our only blemish for the game was our last fielding innings where we gave up 5 runs. Sure the game was won but we still needed to do the little things like backing up and hitting cut off's.
I'm sure the boys learnt from this and we will be better off for the future games.

Sunday 30th November 2008
STURT 14 def SOUTHERN DISTRICTS 3
Once again we hit the ball well with hitters advancing the runners and making good contact. Henry Brennan batted well once again picking up 3 for 3 by batting within himself and just stroking the ball where it's pitched. In the field, it was a much improved effort with no errors and players hitting their cut off's and making the right plays.
Well done boys and we now need to work a bit harder as we take on Golden Grove this weekend.

Under U14/2 - (Coach: Sturt Karen Tindall and Peter Duffield)
The Under 14 Division 2 team defeated Kensington 16 – 15.
Two points is two points and we will take them. The boys played their worst game for the season and still beat the second to top team. The team made eight fielding errors and only managed 3 hits but still scored enough runs to steal the game mainly due to poor pitching by Kensington who gave up 18 walks and 4 errors. Well done to Lewis Brideson, Jayden Trembath and Joshua Tindall for their pitching efforts. It’s back to the training track to try and find our recent better form.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Kris McArdle)
Sturt 19 defeated Adelaide 2
Great start to the game with Brodie MacBeth pitching and holding Adelaide for two digs. Congratulations to Rueben Bishop, Jordan McArdle and Stuart Brennan all pitching for the first time this season and doing a top job. We also fielded quite well with some work still to be done. Adelaide's slower pitching seem to affect our batting with allot of pop ups, we did get away with some through errors but we need to flatten out our shots. Having said that there were some good shots throughout the game. Good job guy we won convincingly without using our regular pitchers keep up the good work. batting training this week and then we have a bye.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulff)
It was a good game against a good side in West Torrens. In the end we went down 17-13 for our first loss of the year. After the game I asked the boys how they thought we did only to get a quick reply back of 'we stunk!' When I asked why this lad felt that way he said it was because he got to bed too late and was tired. That brought a similar response from 3 or 4 other boys so one lesson we learned was that staying up til midnight the night before a game may not bring out the best in us!
I do not agree with that assessment of our performance anyway but West Torrens had only 1 strikeout, meaning their batters put the ball in play. We did not always make the plays but our boys played hard and never gave up. We too put the ball in play with only 3 strikeouts for the game. Four strikeouts between the 2 sides proves it was a good hitting game.
Max showed outstanding batting, accurate pitching, and solid defense. Matt, Ryack, and Arno also hit well. Defensively, there was a nice catch on a bit fly to Michael as well as one to his brother, Daniel. Jack pitched well, not giving up any walks in his 1 inning.
We have started the season well but the boys know we have uncovered a few more things we can work on to improve.

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Jamie Bishop)
Sun 30 Nov 08 Saints (9) defeated Goodwood(8) at Flinders
As the lads arrived at 9am there were indications that sleep-overs, birthday parties and days at the test cricket had taken a toll…..
(Whilst there were 10 boys on the field, I’d guess that 3-4 of them were still tucked up in bed in their own heads!)
Goodwood is a strong hitting side and that plus some soft fielding saw take a 5 run start - & we only managed 2 back after some suicidal base running!
In the second we stopped them for 2 runs, but then went hitless …and by bottom 2, the score line was 7-2 down and it was looking grim….
But then the lights came on! The combination of some field shuffling and the addition of the new “jelly snakes rule” (3 for an out, 3 for a hit) had a miraculous effect and up and down the line up the hits started coming, the sharp fielding plays started happening- and the strikes started to flow! 38 lollies later, the boys brought home a solid win in the bottom of the last dig!
Pitching - Peter Littleyuile 1st innings– a valiant effort again this week but some errors and control problems saw 5 in
- Mathew Johnston 2nd innings –started with a K2 – then a bit wobbly, but then came back (the promise of snakes?) to close them down for just 2 runs
- Tommy Bishop 3rd innings – big improvement to strike average and despite 2 solid hits stopped them for 1 run.
- Stewart Gardiner – shut them down for with 3 up 3 down to stop them in their tracks!
Hits – Stewart Gardiner dbl + sng, dbls to Tristan Boag & Connor Dyer, with singles to Peter, Tyson Ottaway, and Tommy to finish the day.
Good catching by Tyson Ottaway again for 2 tough innings, and Connor Dyer did well for 2.
Great come from behind win that made for an exciting spectacle for the crowd (and the coaches!)
Thanks Craig for umpiring with Ian’s assistance, Jo and her trainees for scoring and to all for the field setup!

It has been brought to the attention of Baseball SA that recently there are some scorers who have smoked whilst scoring games. Please be aware that this is against the rules. This is relevant to all Baseball SA games, but particularly during Youth games. Leaving the scorebox with the scorebook, with a view to continuing scoring whilst smoking, is definitely still in breach of these rules.

Division 1 (Coach: Tony Catt)
Sturt 13 defeated Adelaide 7
In a crucial match to keep our finals chances alive, the Saints came out of the blocks well posting 4 runs in the first inning.
The match then settled down with both teams getting the job done defensively until the game again was split open in the 8th with a 6 run inning from the blue boys.
This wasnt a clinical match but a win to the good guys is the right result. The pitchers had to work particularly hard for there outs today and Dale Martens was pretty good for us down the stretch.
Hits - Roeger 3, Turner 3, Holmes 3, Hanvi 2, Lee 2, Young 2, Day, Noble

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)
Sturt 14 defeated Adelaide 2
This was a great performance from the B grade, scoring in every innings of the match. The extra batting practice during the week must have helped! Offensively, Telmo was outstanding with 4 hits and 8 RBIs.
Craig Wright continues to improve on the mound and bounced back from last weeks performance well.
This was a great team performance and played at a standard that needs to be maintained if we are to play finals this season.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
Finally got our first win of the year with a great team effort. We defeated Southern Districts 10-4. With one of the best line-ups we have had in Div3 in a long time we played hard and aggressive for a full 2hrs. Justin Zak came back into the line-up after a week off and made an impact in the box and in the field getting another safe hit and making one of the greatest catches at second base I have ever seen. Another great contributor was Nick Tuffnell who himself took an amazing catch at left field then turned it into a double play throwing the runner out at 1st, Nick also came in and closed the last 2 digs on the hill. Will Frogley had a great day at short also getting 2 safe hits. Josh Green 3-5 had a day out in the box. Jamie Knuckey was a welcome inclusion behind the dish and in the box going 2-4 with a walk. Ben Bicknell collected 2 safe hits (boy is he hitting the ball hard). Player of the day was Zac Harnett going 3-4 and having an outstanding day in the field. Tom Teague continued his graet year getting himself 2 safe hits.Well done boys it was a great effort now lets go on with it.

Division 4 (Coach: Peter Turner)
Sturt 6 d Southern Districts 3

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke)
won vs East Torrens 7-6
Although having an extended squad of 18, we had many on the inactive list this week and struggled to get a team together at the last minute; however, thanks to Trent we just scraped the nine in.
In one season defining moment when I decided to umpire and throw Smally the ball to start, it can only be said that this was a coaching masterstroke.
With what was a sensational display of pitching for nearly 4 innings, holding ET scoreless, Smally mesmerised batters with his unwavering control and supersonic speed, ably supported by rookie catcher Ricki Ricardo.
"Wild Thing" Sluga came to the mound and then it was "game" on with ET hitting a purple patch and only the mascot safe on the bench, however, down 4-6 in the last, our fighting qualities came to the fore with the Junior (strained calf, cant run, just hit) putting one over to score Doc and then Rick's double to score Sluga to win the game by one. Pop took 2 great catches at left, Doc was significant at 1st (although a dropped catch, fall over, kick around, fumble, where's the ball ? play at first was the highlight)
Back in the winners circle and with "correct weight" announced we saddle up again next week a little higher up the ladder after sending ET to "phone home" - we'll just take it one game at a time.
Hits - Doc 2 (2x2), Junior 2 (1 HR, 1x2), Zak 2 (1x2), Trembath (1x2), Sluga 1

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin/Jason Hart)
Sturt 6 went down to Goodwood 10. Sturt started well with every one hitting for the first 4 digs and remained in front 6 – 4. A dismal 5th innings with Goodwood scoring 6 runs off errors saw the Saints collapse. A notable item was a bomb by Jason Hart in the 4th innings.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)
Sturt V Port Adelaide
We went down in a game that we should have won with the final score being 5-7. We really controlled the game from the beginning scoring two runs in the first from an error, we again held Port Adelaide scoreless for the first three innings. Tom Teague was on the mound and did a fantastic job. Going into the last innings we were 4 – 1 up and Toby was on the mound, unfortunately for him they got a few hits that found some holes and we made some fielding errors which did not help Toby, Port scoring 6 runs, so 3 to tie and 4 to win, we managed to get one back. The boys need to use the bats a bit more and not watch so many strikes over the plate and we need to start watching the ball all the way onto the bat not where we think we are hitting it to. Safe hits win games and you can not hit balls that you do not watch. Again thanks to Alistair Young for helping out while a couple of the boys went to schoolies.
Safe Hits: Lunnon 2,Teague 2, Young 1

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Jeff Nicholas)
Sturt played their best game this season defeating West Torrens 10-2 at Lockleys. In a stellar performance on the mound, Jai Redigolo gave up 2 hits in 5.2 innings and struck out 8.
The second inning was magical baseball as Sturt scored 5 runs on 5 hits and Jai struck out the side. Woody found some form with the bat picking up 3 hits.
We play the Eagles next week at Flinders and should continue to build on the confidence gained on Sunday.
Hits; Wood 3 Brebner-Russ 2 Papps, Zak, Redigolo, Lobasso, McFarlane

Under 16/1 Saints (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
Well we managed a last innings fight back to down Woodville 11-10 for our second win of the year.Dylan Holt started things off on the hill throwing a very solid 4 digs then Dakota making a brief appearance ,with Jordan Wayne closing out the game. Bradley Trembath was outstanding behind the dish , not much gets past him. Will Brennan belted a triple and he is punishing the ball , Sam Hollis who is having a great year with the bat also getting himself a triple. We batted very well today with singles going to Jarrad Small,Jess Lemon,Ben Young,Dakota Mitchell,Jordan Wayne and Dylan Holt, it was so good having so many contributors and not just leaving it up to one or two people, outr team batting was great with Jordan putting up a sac fly and Jess laying down a perfect sac bunt.We have shown what we are capable off, we just need to build on these 2 wins, this is just the start.

STURT 13 def KENSINGTON 4
This game was always going to be a danger game as Kensington were sitting right behind us in third spot on the same points and armed with 2 State pitchers and some pretty handy hitters in their line up.
We started the week with the boys training really well and then bringing this with them to the game right from the warm up to the very last pitch.
We started the game well with 3 runs in the first dig and then had James Snelgrove do the job for us on the mound right from the word go. Excellent effort.
We scored in 5 of our 6 innings which was really pleasing but our 5th dig was by far our best with the guys making good hard contact, Tyler Lunnon put down a great bunt and then Jayden Trembath drove in the runs. We were aggressive on the bases........(maybe a little TOO aggressive a couple of times but we'll work on that.) and things just kept flowing from there until we scored 7 runs. GREAT JOB.
It was a really good TEAM effort right from the start of the game which was really pleasing to see and we can also start to see some of the things we have been working on at trainings come into play.
Our hitting is becoming a great strength as each player grows in confidence and we can see we are scoring our runs through making good contact and hitting the ball hard through the field. The LONG BOMBS just happen but good line drive hitting will keep the runners moving around those bases and give the opposition a headache.
WELL DONE BOYS and let's keep trying to improve a little more each week and see where it takes us.................Set yourself some GOALS and go and make them happen.

Under U14/2 - (Coach: Sturt Karen Tindall and Peter Duffield)
The under 14 Division 2 team lost to Golden Grove 12 – 9.
Our game was one of high standard, with the opposition coach thanking us after the game for being such a tough team to play. We dominated for the first three innings, only to hand them the game in the fourth with poor fielding. Our boys out hit them for safe hits 9 – 7 but couldn’t finish them off leaving 10 runners on bases. Henry Brennan pitched his first game this season and shut down the opposition batters, only giving up one hit and collecting 5 K2”s along the way. He also hit safely twice. Well done Henry, a great performance. Strong batting by Sam Duffield with 3 for 3 and hits to Lasar Losic, Miro Van Rensburg, Scott Wyatt and Josh Tindall. The boys are starting to believe in their ability and will continue to improve.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Kris McArdle)
Sturt 8 defeated West Torrens 5
Great Job guys we knocked off the top side. Zach Lunnon pitched so well he held off WT for three digs, with help from Fraser Crameri and Stuart Brennan both taking spectacular catches in the outfield. Scores were even after three digs, Mitch took to the mound and also held off WT for two digs but during this period our bats started cracking Henry Wood came off the bench and started us off with a two bagger up the middle. Jordan, Brodie, Zach E all hit the ball and put us three runs up at the top of the 5th. After holding WT we continued to bat well with Mitch and Henry getting on base with great hits, Jordan then put one out over the fence to put the game out off reach. Brodie , Zach E, Zach L and Reuben (also off bench) continued to show our hitting display and we scored the maximum 5 runs. Boys this was an exciting brand of baseball don't stop here let continue to work on our game and improve every week.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulff)
Sturt 16 defeated Southern Districts 11. We had our backs to the wall early in this game but hit our way out of trouble. Nick opened the pitching and while pitching for the first time he was around the mark. William pitched the 2nd without giving up a run, Harry was unlucky as he was just a bit high in the strike zone, and Matt gave up a single run in his inning.
Batting standouts were William with 3 hits, Jack with 2, Harry with 3 runs scored, Ryack with a a triple, and Matthew hitting a homerun. Tennyson showed great improvement in the batters box. He had a big at bat in the middle of the game when he hit a ground ball and then beat the throw to first allowing an important run to score.
Damon made a nice catch in centre field and then on the next play had the sense to field a safe hit and hurrying a throw to second to get the runner.
Play of the year, however, goes to Max Staggs while playing 3rd base. The batter absolutely smashes a line drive to Max, hitting him in the thumb area of his throwing hand. As competitve as he is with a never give up attitude Max picked up the ball and fired a strike to second base just nipping the runner. Realising what happened to his hand he immediately comes out of the game and puts an ice pack on it to help keep the swelling down, therefore missing the rest of the game. This was the bravest play I'd seen in baseball.

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Jamie Bishop)
Saints (11) went down to Glenelg (13) at Glenelg
A great day for baseball out at Glenelg and Saints were there on time and ready to play – unfortunately, Glenelg could only muster 8 players….
- no matter! Tristan Boag our newest player who was due for a ½ a game on the bench happily agreed instead to “help them out”….
And help them out he did! As well as making a play (or 2?) at 3rd base in the top of the innings, he then stepped up to a loaded bases situation and calmly swatted a grand slam home run to tie. It up for them in the bottom of the 1st! (…reminded me of that one about the mother in law going over a cliff in your brand new Mercedes….)
And so it continued.. we got up, they got back, we came unstuck… and then so did they! At the end of the day, they managed to muddle though with 2 more runs than we did…
There were highlights –Tristan had 3 hits from 3 at bats (2 for them!), Peter Littleyuile stroked a crisp home run off their best pitcher, Stewart Gardiner’s 2 hits (1 a double) as well as hits from Matthew Johnston (2), Tyson Ottaway, Tommy Bishop, James Davidson and Angus Reid showed the depth of our line up! Tyson caught 2 fine innings again and then Connor Dyer’s first appearance as catcher also showed great promise! Again we saw the impact of pitching … both Peter Littleyuile and Tommy Bishop tried hard but had control issues (and we lacked field support) and were mercied for 5 runs …. Matthew Johnston did a little better and stopped them for 3 runs …. and by the time Stewart Gardiner threw the last innings the horse (tiger) had bolted….
Despite the loss, the grins were from ear to ear when we announced our 2 team sponsors
– Brownhill Creek Tourist Park
– Watts Agencies & Brooks

Each boy received a stylish new Easton baseball bag as well as a collection of Brooks gear – hat, training shirt and shoe bag! Many thanks to our 2 sponsors and of course all the parents.

Division 1 (Coach: Tony Catt)
Game 1- Sturt 0 drew with Goodwood 0

Belief was the key word before this game and defensively we were magnificent. Per Sjors threw the whole game for a 2 hit shutout. He is really leading the way for our pitching staff at the moment.
Goodwood threw their import at us and he was very good but we still should have done enough to win this one. At a couple of critical times, we didnt execute the offensive plays required and this hurt. This is part of our game which we need to keep working on.
Hits - Lee, Roeger, Young, Winter

Game 2- Sturt 3 lost to Goodwood 9

Once again, defensively we played magnificent baseball. Ali Young had a great day, displaying his maturity. Daniel Turner is just getting better game by game at short stop. He is setting new standards for himself and is making the 50/50 plays.
Fred Hanvi caught all day and was fantastic. He also displays maturity on the field beyond his years and is excellent for our young pitching staff.
Ben Packer and Craig Wright shared the pitching duties and pitched below their personal best. I know they will both bounce back after a tough week on the training track.
The scoreline does not reflect how tight this game was. We left 13 runners on and just didnt get that hit at the crucial time to make this a closer contest.
The boys played errorless baseball for the day which was a pleasing indicator.
Hits - Young, Lee, Roeger, Hanvi 2, Holmes, Turner.

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)

Sturt 2 drew with Goodwood 2.
Shane Horne continues to get the job done and battled well for the match. Restricting any side to 2 runs should result in a win at this level but offensively we were very average once again.
Daniel Turner also deserves a special mention for closing the game out in difficult circumstances.
Picking up only 4 hits for the match is simply not good enough and we will work on this through the week.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
Possibly our worst peformance yet.Playing West Torrens we know it is going to be a tough game so we should have been pumped ready but it didnt happen losing 10-0. As we discussed after the game I don't think any games have been won not scoring a run. We made the pitching look good with only 3 hits for the day. Welcome back to the hitting box to Nick Tuffnell with a stand up double. Zac Harnett and Tom Teague also collecting singles other than that there was nothing else. Tom Teague had an outstanding game with his first senior start, going 4 digs only giving up 1 hit, Tom threw very hard and at times he was very hard to hit, well done. Well done to Harrison Wood who played his first div3 game. Thankyou to Pete Turner who doubled up and caught boyh Div 4 & Div 3.

Division 4 (Coach: Peter Turner)
Sturt 12 defeated West Torrens 2

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke)
At the foot of the Flinders Ranges sits the lovely city of Playford, nestled amongst the wonderful native eucalypts, we restocked the Windebagos' and found ourselves at the picuresque and well manacured grounds of Broadmeadows Oval, this being the setting for our latest foray. Surrendering a 4-0 lead to be behind 5-4 after the 3rd, we fought it out to the end to go down by the smallest of margins 7-8 after some controversy with a dodgy umpires timepiece. In what was a showpiece of the game of baseball, Junior smacked the ball for 3 solid hits, we then had a sprinkling of single hitters. Burner was burning on the mound early, facing only 8 batters in the 1st 2 innings but in the 3rd the tough Playford hitters made hay, which was the only difference for the day. Ricki Ricardo had to knock a couple down at 3rd and Daisy made some good plays from short and Doc as usual battled hard although had his usual rush of blood on the bases. The Wulff pinged a hammy, Pop had the sun in his eyes, the Cat relieved well on the mound and oh yeh, Smally got a hit (finally). Once again the victor was baseball, not Divy 5 but we gave it a shake !
Thanks Ronny Mac for penciling.
Hits - Angel 3, Young 1, Wulff 1, Trembath 1, Small 1

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin/Jason Hart)
Woodville 12 defeated Sturt 5

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)

Bye

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Jeff Nicholas)
Sturt defeated Golden Grove 7-3 at Norman Reserve on Sunday. We played an average game outhitting the GG’s 9-2 when we should have dominated a little more. Thanks to Harrison Lightbody and Will Brennan who filled in picked up a hit each. Next week the rubber hits the road when we play West Torrens away in what should be a tough game. Hits; Nicholas 2 Lightbody, Papps, Brebner-Russ, Redigolo, Wood, McFarlane, Brennan

Under 16/1 Saints (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
Finally we showed everybody how we can play baseball smashing Adelaide 13-2. Attitude was great everyone was focused, and it showed getting 4 runs in the 1st,4 in the 2nd,2 in the 3rd and 3 in the last. Scoring in every dig was a great effort. Jarrad Small had a great day 2-3 with a walk,Jess Lemon was outstanding in the box going 3-4 with a double (way to open the account). Ben Young after a month away stepped up going 2-3 & a walk. To have 7 safe hits from our top 3 in the line up is sensational. Sam Hollis lined a double, his hitting has been brilliant this year, he always looks dangerous. Matt MacBeth great team batting with a great sac fly also getting himself a safe hit. Bradley Trembath caught his 1st game of the year and was simply excellent, he is such a good catcher and he also had a good day in the box nailing one deep to left field for a double. Player of the day would have to be Dakota Mitchell going 2-2 with the bat which included a massive double over left. Dakota started on the hill and he was simply outstanding early throwing as hard and as accurately as I have ever seen him until a sore arm shut him down. Jordan Wayne did a great job coming in and closing the game down. Good job boys let's go on with it now.

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Glen McDonald)
Several unusual events punctuated this game as we overwhelmed Southern Districts early. The boys banged out 10 hits in the first 2 innings to set up a commanding lead. Brett led the team from the mound giving up only 4 hits and striking out 9 Hawks ( 6 walks was a bit of a concern though). He also had 2 hits of his own. Sam Osmond took 2 important catches in rightfield as well as picking up 2 hits ( his best game of the year ) and Cameron Mckinnon had a good day at first base. A big thankyou to Spiro Rozaklis for making a guest appearance (yes he is registered) and to Matthew Franke from u14 div.
Ones who pitched a 3 up 3 down final innings. Many thanks also to Janette Mckinnon canteen (I may have missed someone) Sue Mulryan scoring and Darren French for umpiring. Final score Sturt 12 - Southern Districts 4.

Under 14/1 Sturt Coach (Coach: Craig Gillespie)
Sturt 18 defeated Northern Districts 6

Under U14/2 - (Coach: Sturt Karen Tindall and Peter Duffield)
The Under 14 Division 2 team lost to Gawler 14 – 12.
The team displayed great character to fight their way back into the game after giving up early runs in the first innings, courtesy of a towering home run and a walk. Our opposition had rattled us, but we settled and began to play good offensive and defensive baseball.
We started to hit the ball and made the most of our on base appearances to eventually outscore Gawler in our final three innings 12 – 10.
Stand up doubles to Lachlan Hooper, Lasar Losic and Sam Duffield were a highlight, along with singles to Brett Colmer, Scott Wyatt, Hayden Emery and Lachlan.
Josh Tindall pitched for 3 innings and Lasar 1 innings. Alex Renton had another good game behind the mask.
It was a good team effort against a club with only one under 14 team.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Kris McArdle)
Sturt 19 Defeated Woodville 1
This week we played the best baseball that we have played to date. Once again all pitchers did there job ( Good to see Mitchell Lightbody back in the team), everyone hit the ball and base running was excellent. Some good fielding with a double play and many thrown out at first. Due to our strong pitching we were not stretched in the field and we need to keep working on different fielding scenarios at training. Special mention to Rueben Bishop who really hit the ball well and missed out on his turn to pitch when the umpire called the game one dig short. Next week is going to be a cracking game against West Torrens at home. If we warm up and play like this week there is no reason why we can't beat them, I think we owe them one. Work hard at training this week guys as we are improving every week.
Keep it up boys.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulff)
We ran out winners, 17-6, against a valiant group of Hawks. Good batters included Ryack, Nick, Jack, and Arno. The pitching was led by Arno, Damon, and Ryack, and we saw good fielding by Max and Nick on a play at 2B and an out at first on a ball hit to Damon.
Daniel stood out for his 4 solid hits, his shutout inning as pitcher, and the double play he made on a line drive while pitching. Matthew also stood out for his great batting and good catching. Another who stood out was Arno for his super heads up baserunning, good batting, pitching, and defense.
We welcome to the team Tennyson, who had his first practice on Thursday before this game. All others had many practices in preparation for game 1 so hats off to the young lad. The rest of the boys did their best to make him feel a welcome addition to the team. In fact, he had 8 other kids and 3 or 4 of us adults trying to give him instructions, so while his head would have been swimming, at least it showed others have been paying attention!
Thanks again to the non playing support, led by Debbie, Ralph, Simon, Bob, Richard, Terry, and others.

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Jamie Bishop)
Saints (7) went down to West Torrens (10) at West Torrens
It was a case of the one that got away today – a strong tight game that went down to the wire and slipped away in the bottom of the 4th inning. We came out hard and scored 5 runs off 5 hits & walks to mercy the first – but West Torrens answered with 5 runs off their 3 hits. It then became a pitching/fielding duel in both the 2nd and 3rd innings - we scored 1 run each time, and shut them down for none. In the top of the 4th, they shut us down for a zero… so 2 runs ahead going into the bottom of the last we were hopeful… but solid hitting from them and before we knew it they had us! A good effort in the field all round with some tough plays
– Matthew Johnston pitched the 1st innings and struggled with control but tried hard and stayed with it
– Tommy Bishop did a great job again this week and the field worked well to keep to a scoreless 2nd
– Peter Littleyuile again showed good stuff to stop them in order
- and Stewart Gardiner tried hard in the last, but control was a little errant.
I think our bats went a bit quiet today compared to last few games and that is something we can work on –I am confident we will get them next time!
Good effort and again great support from all the parents thankyou!

Match Reports Week 5

Hope everyone has caught their breath after last weekend's Centenary Events. The feedback has been fantastic and thanks to everyone who has provided us with their views on the weekend!

On the night one of our major sponsors SIA Sports Images were our official photographer.

You can view the images online and you can also use the order form for images that you want to select!

I am pleased to advise that our Featured Player of the Month is back! The player for this month is Jordan McArdle from Little League 1-Sturt. You can access the player by scrolling down the front page of our website homepage under the results at a glance. We are aiming this season to have a mixture of senior and junior players as Featured players inline with our philosophy of promoting greater integration between seniors and juniors.

Congratulations to our players who have been selected to play for the State Junior competitions in January 2009.
Under 14s - Harrison Lightbody, James Snellgrove
Under 16s - Jackson Brebner Russ, David Nicholas, Harrison Wood (there are two more spots to fill and there are 6 kids in contention for those spots - two of the six kids are Justin Zak and Jai Redigolo)
Under 18s - Daniel Lee, Sam Day, Ali Young, Pat Burns, Tom Teague

A Level 0 scorers course will be held on Wednesday 19th November 2008 at the club at 7.30pm. Any queries to David Lightbody

For those of you that missed it, it was great to read the story about our own Paul Mildren who now plays with the Kansas City Royals and partner Hannah Davis in the Sunday Mail in the Ben, Bec and Buzz page of the Sports Section of the Sunday Mail (page 54 of the Sports section)

Please ensure that all club umpires are aware of the game times involved (see Rules & Playing Conditions 59.3.1) for Divisions 3 – 7 and for junior competition. There have recently been some issues in this regard – Divisions 3 – 7, in particular, are games of 120 minutes with no new innings to commence after that time; for instance, if a game is at even innings at 104 minutes, then a further innings should be played.

Our swedish import, Per Sjors, is seeking some work during the week. He holds a work visa. Pers Sjors is also looking for a car while he is here. If anyone can help please contact Tony Catt

Division 1 (Coach: Tony Catt)
Sturt 0 lost to Port Adelaide 3 After last weekends festivities it was important we didn't have a let down and to the group's credit, we played excellent baseball.
As it sometime goes in baseball, we didn't get much luck throughout the game but plugged away all day and took it to Port.
Per Sjors and Ben Packer did outstanding jobs on the mound and should be proud of there efforts. Confidence is a wonderful thing. Ben has now got this and will keep improving from here.
We struggled a little bit with the bat but did face some outstanding pitching. Facing quality pitching of this mature week in week out will certainly speed up the development of our young group.
We play Woodville on Tuesday night and then a tough double header on the weekend against Goodwood. We are looking forward to the challenge and if we keep playing the standard of baseball we have been, we are a big chance.
Hits - Turner, Winter, Lee

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)
Sturt 4 defeated Port Adelaide 3
Shane Horne did an excellent job on the mound for 6 innings in his longest outing for the season. The field backed him up well.
Offensively, we need to learn how to score more consistently and not have large parts of game where we go to sleep. We need to be more aggressive in the box and make contact more often.
It is always nice to have a win, but this wasn't one of our better efforts and we need to improve on this.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
One of the best games of Div3 I have been involved with. Even though we lost 3-2 in 8 digs the boys did not give up and continued to play the game hard until the very end. Michael Robinson played his best game of the season catching and calling a very mature game as well as collecting 2 hits of his own. Telmo also played a good game at 3rd turning a double play, with the bat he smashed a stand up double. Nick Tuffnell collecting a safe hit and finishing the game off on the hill throwing a very solid 1 1/3 innings.Player of the day goes to Ben Bicknell who added a big bat & experience to our young line up, Ben had an outstanding day in centre field and a better one in the box going 2-4 with a massive home run over centre right. Well done to Dakota Mitchell & Justin Zak who shared the duties at 2nd base. We have shown that we can mix it with the best now is the time to start collecting some wins, hang in there boys! Thanks to all the people who came to support both Div 3 & Div 4 , the players appreciate it.

Division 4 (Coach: Peter Turner)
Glenelg 13 defeated Sturt 0

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke)
Lost V Adelaide 5-17
Well, we all travelled to Glenelg with our buckets and spades, bathers and towels and had a lovely day at the beach!
With the Bear out of the woods, the Woody back in his gray pants and the support crew all fired up we had high hopes of a win.
Should have seen the writing on the wall when I left the scorebook home.
After a great start with 3 in the first and Junior putting one over it was then back to a dismal day at the office.
The Bear was pitching his "Hall of Fame" heart out but it was those Adelaide dinky, puncy little bloopers that break your heart and our infield work was a little scratchy with Dave Lee's radar malfunctioning and a cripple on first we just couldn't get the outs we needed.
The Wulff hit magnificently all day, Shrek battled behind the mask and Buzz took a couple of fine outfield catches. Daisy Day struggled with his aging body and, oh the Small one pitched the perfect innings (much to the mirth and merriment of all in attendance), before fronting again and copping it next time round.
Once again, baseball and fun were the winners on the day, not the Div 5 boys - we may need the Pres to make an appearance, just to scare the opposition into submission.

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin/Jason Hart)
Glenelg 18 defeated Sturt 0

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)
Sturt 5 defeated East Torrens 4
The first three games we have given up most of our runs but today was different we had Alistair Young on the mound and for the first three innings we had three up three down with Alistair only throwing 30 pitches. In the first innings East Torrens had one on first base and with a hit and run on they hit a line drive to Beau at short stop who then turned it into a double play. Beau then had a field to make the third out for the innings.
In the second we had outs from Beau at short, Tom at Third with a fly ball catch and Bradley had the third out at second. In the third the three outs were Tom from third to Jay at First, Alistair to Jay and a strike out. Our first three inning at bat were a lot better with Beau getting a walk and Jay getting safe from an error at right field both went to score on Alistair's three base hit, 2 up at the end of the first.
We then scored two more in the third from Toby who had a walk and Jay who hit to centre field, Alistair then hit the fence on the full at centre field to score them both and a stand up double. Top of the fourth and the score was 4 zip. We gave up two runs in the top of the fourth with one from a missed bal at home and a balk. We then gave up two more in the top of the sixth, Alistair had thrown 73 pitches and was done but a fantastic job he did to give us the chance to win.
Sam Day came to the mound and with on strike out and a catch from Jake Borlace at right field finished of the innings leaving one runner on third base, Sam then shut them down in the seventh and scores tied. We needed one to win, Toby up first with a walk, Sam second and did he want to hit the ball unfortunately the ball hit him, so first and second occupied, Alistair to the plate hit and run he gets safe from a hit to short stop, loaded bases Tom Teague up with all fielders in, hit to short stop Toby going home catcher misses ball for Toby to score and win the game, none out bases loaded. Alistair Young did try to steal home on the pitch in one innings and although was safe was given out by the umpire.
Thanks to Sam Day and Alistair Young for helping out for the day they had a great time. Beau Pelgrim had a day out at short stop and Jay Lunnon was good at first base making all the outs when required. Trent was good behind the plate and was better from help during the week from Alistair, JBR and Tony Catt.
Great Game by all the boys.
We need to work on our behavior though as a few things filtered back to me at the end of the game. Bad behavior and words to the umpire will not be tolerated at the Club and it must stop now.
Safe Hits Young 3 (triple & double), Lunnon, Teague & Baldwin Leach

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Jeff Nicholas)
Sturt came from behind to beat Kensington 11-8 on Sunday. We trailed 8-2 going in to the last inning when the guys came up with two walks and five hits including a triple to Matt MacBeth and a drive from Shaun McFarlane which scored two runs. Justin Zak hit the ball solidly all game for three hits as did JBR.
David Nicholas threw 41/2 innings giving up two runs for nine strikeouts.
We got in trouble early but showed real character coming up with the goods to steal a victory from the jaws of defeat.
Hits Zak, Brebner-Russ 3 MacBeth 2 Redigolo, Nicholas, Wood and McFarlane

Under 16/1 Saints (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
Bye

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Glen McDonald)
Sturt 11 - Glenelg 16
A very competitive game against Glenelg saw the lead change several times. Although we led going into the bottom of the last we couldn't hold on for the win. The batting was very good with every player collecting a hit and running the bases well. We were better at using the cutoffs from the outfield this week but unfortunately Glenelg were able to steal bases far too easily and scored numerous runs on wild pitches. Holding runners on is now a priority. Paige Mattsson had a top day with a hit and 2 great catches at second base. One a line drive and the other a difficult catch running back into shallow rightfield. Sam Osmond had a triple and Jack Colmer pitched terrifically before tiring. Many thanks to Dylan Holt for making himself available and being a very effective leadoff.

Under 14/1 Sturt Coach (Coach: Craig Gillespie)
STURT 3 def ADELAIDE 2
For all that were at the game, they saw 7 innings of hard fort baseball, right to the bottom of the 7th dig. The game was there for both teams to win and fortunately we came out on top.
Matt Franke came in as the relief pitcher and did a good job just throwing strikes for us and letting the field back him up, Well done Matt.
Sam Myers and Ryan Dijsman came through with a double and a triple to get our score ticking.
Max Guehrer also hit a nice double and took a match breaking diving catch........well positioned I must say.
And to finish the game off, Tyler Lunnon made a nice play at 3rd to the out stretched James "THE BIG OCTOPUS" Snelgrove.
A special mention also to Henry Brennen who after being taken out of the game, kept supporting his team mates from the bench......I love that in a team player......Well Done.
To all the boys WELL DONE it was a good team effort to get us over the line and also to the many parents, grandparents, family and friends, Thankyou for all your support on the weekend, it was great to see so many people out there.

Under U14/2 - (Coach: Sturt Karen Tindall and Peter Duffield)
The Under 14 Division 2 team defeated Woodville 19 – 2.
It was a great team effort on Sunday with all players contributing to our win.
A good display in the field, with the right plays being executed for the outs. Our base running improved and we collected 11 hits.
Good hitting by Jayden Trembath (3), Scott Wyatt (2) and Sam Duffield (2). Our pitchers Lachlan Hooper (3 innings) and Jayden Trembath (2 innings) shut out the opposition all day.
Well played boys.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Kris McArdle)
Sturt 17 defeated Southern Districts 6
Great win guys we all batter very well with everyone getting a safe hit. Our base running was aggressive and showed how much pressure we can apply on the bases. All 4 pitcher had a good game special mention to Brodie MacBeth getting three strike outs in a row to complete the game, great effort mate for your first outing of the season. Our fielding had some good and bad points, Fraser Crameri took a great catch in Centre field, Jordan McArdle throw another runner out at second but we also showed some small metal errors throwing the ball around to much and at time to the wrong player. That's ok guys because that's why we train. Keep it up team as we are improving every week. See you all at training with Peter Gee down at Seaton and we better be ready for Woodville as they are travelling well.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulff)
Sturt 14 defeated Eagles 10

While we are still a work in progress it was another good game by the boys to remain undefeated. At the start of the game we were uncharacteristically watching strikes instead of swinging the bat. In fact, it looked like we would go scoreless in the 1st inning before we eventually scored 5, all with 2 outs! Daniel then came in to pitch his first game and did well throwing plenty of strikes. We then scored another 5 in the 2nd inning with a bases loaded triple by Max the key hit. Damon then pitched the 2nd inning without giving up a run. We went scoreless in the 3rd but added another 4 in the 4th to put the game out of reach.

Matthew, in his first game as catcher, did a super job. He was also solid at bat with some great hits at key times. Ryack also did well catching. Ryack showed what batting is all about as he struggled his first couple of at bats as he was watching strikes 1 and 2, putting himself under pressure for the next pitch. His 3rd at bat he seemed to go up there with a different mindset where he was looking to hit right from the first pitch. He then hit a ball soooo hard it was fortunate it was not at someone!

Young Michael Ortiz filled in admirably in his first full game after 2 late scratches with Harry and Nick both battling illness. Michael made a couple of very nice plays at 2nd, including a catch of a line drive hit like a rocket. William struck out his first at bat but then smashed a couple of doubles to lead our batting attack. Of the 10 players we had rostered at the start of the year 9 have now had a go at pitching and 5 at catching. The one inning per pitcher has, in my opinion, been a good change brought about by the League as we now develop more kids to pitch.

Jack and Max pitched well, too. We had a few errant throws, a dropped popup, and a misjudged fly ball but in the end it did not matter. The boys are improving out of sight and have a great air of mateship amongst them. They cheer each other on at all times, whether it be after a big hit or an error / strikeout.

Lastly, a big thank you to Simon for being our last second scorekeeper, and to Debbie, Richard, and Ralph for their assistance.

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Jamie Bishop)
Saints (13) defeated Southern Districts (2) at Sturt

What a treat – the boy’s first and only game at Mitcham was going to be one to remember – and SA’s prettiest diamond looked perfect as these first timers with eyes were as big as saucers took to the field!

The special day was made even more so thanks to the kind assistance of Bill Magoulianos (Bulls President) as volunteer ‘behind the plate’ umpire in the full gear* – and another first for all the boys! Ably assisted by dad Angus out on bases, it was always going to be a great day!

(*line of the day from Tyson Ottaway our catcher, to Bill the umpire at beginning of his 1st innings
- “just because you look like you do, don’t you go calling an A grade zone on us!”)

From the first pitch, Saints looked in control – measured, thoughtful at bats –working through the erratic offerings to pick out and lean on the occasional strikes… but not swishing at bouncing balls or tennis shots!
All did well – stand outs from James Davidson and Connor Dyer both with 2 hits, Peter Littleyuile with 2 hits (of which 1 was a double) - and Tommy Bishop with 3 hits inc a triple!
The field worked well and kept the concentration up throughout – and the pitching …..wow! - Stewart Gardiner started and allowed only 2 runs in before reigning them in. Tommy Bishop then froze them out in the 2nd (allowing only 1 on base) ….. and then in the 3rd we opened the cage door and unleashed Mitchell “Wild Thang” Lightbody who was on ½ game loan from his team – and he literally blew them away for his 3 K inning!

In the last we finished them off with Ethan “the fireman” Egglestone who came on and hosed them down!

What a "first ever game at Sturt" experience for them all – I was delighted to be a part of it!

Sincere thanks to all the parents – who jumped in again as organizers, field setters, scorers, canteen workers and cheer squad – and special thanks to Bill Magoo and Matt Mulryan – fantastic day!
