Centenary Edition & Match Reports Week 4

Welcome to the Special Centenary Edition of our weekly news! This is a much larger News than I would normally write, but I am sure you can appreciate this only happens once every hundred years!

With so many activities to report on and so many people to thank, I make no apology for the length of this Newsletter!

I think we are a stronger club for what we have achieved over this last weekend. This would not have been possible without the support of a huge number of people. I try in my comments below to thank a number of you but inevitably I will miss somebody! I apologise in advance for missing anyone but I am sure everyone did what they did over the weekend and in the lead up because of their support for our club!

The Centenary Dinner held at the Pavilion was a great success with literally standing room only (if that!). The Dinner provided us with an opportunity to reflect on our proud history and our MC for the night Wayne Phillips did an outstanding job keeping the night moving.

There were many highlights, but The Hall of Fame presentation was a big hit at the dinner and has now started a tradition within our club of acknowledging club legends! In the near future we will have a special section on our website to honour these first group of inductees. We will also have the names of the Hall of Fame members displayed in the clubroom.

Another highlight of the night was the unveiling of our Centenary tops. The Senior Squad (and others!) paraded around in the tops which have been designed to reflect the type of uniform we wore 100 years ago!

Celebrations continued on Sunday at the Club with one of the largest turnouts of people in recent years!
On the field the boys looked fantastic wearing their Centenary Uniforms. Visit the front page of our website for some photos of the day!

It was great to see so many people at the club, many of whom had not been there for a long time.

The day was packed with events including Stan Warrilow singing the National Anthem for the first of the A Grade double headers and Hall of Fame inductee Ron MacBeth threw the first pitch.

In between the two A Grade games, we had a Little League demonstration match between Sturt and Adelaide.

Stan Warrilow showed off more of his musical talents by playing "When the Saints Go Marching in" at the conclusion of a minutes silence to remember members of our club who had passed away.

Club Patron and also recently inducted Hall of Fame Recipient David Hutton threw the first pitch of the second game.

Peter Gee and Garry Wood did a magnificent job with the commentary and sound effects for the game, which you could have thought was being played in America! This markets our game to another level and I would be keen to repeat the commentary and music later in the year!

I would also like to thank Dave Hodson and his partner for the magnificent job they did running the bar, and also to those helpers running the outside bar! The Canteen was run off its feet and we greatly appreciate the help of people like Carol Burns, Trudy Lightbody, Janet Young, Andrea Lee, Pip Allen, Gaynor Kerr and I know others but I don't have their names readily at hand. We were delighted with your support and this helps make our club great so thank you very much!

Apart from all these festivities our Division 1 and 2 teams played magnificently to win all three games, much to the delight of the Sturt Crowd. The Halo Cup, which was launched today as a perpetual trophy to be held by the Division 1 team who had the best number of wins out of three encounters between Adelaide and Sturt was won today by us given that we won both games!

After the match it was great to see the sportsmanship of the Adelaide Angels who came into the clubrooms for a drink. As President it gave me much pleasure to present the Halo Cup to Division 1 Coach Tony Catt.

Thanks to everyone who has come up to me to let me know how much they have enjoyed this weekend.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank David Hutton and his Centenary Committee for the hard work they have put in over two years in assisting the Senior Committee stage this weekend.

I would also like to pay tribute to our hard working Senior Committee for the work that they have put into this event.

I would particularly like to thank Darren Noble who has arranged for our clubrooms to be painted and tidied for the event and for his work in coordinating Sunday's activities. I know he enlisted many helpers who are too numerous to mention here but the Club very much appreciates all of those who helped!

Changes to Game Schedule

Please be advised that Baseball SA has made a number of changes to the schedule. I have updated our website to match the changes made by Baseball SA for Senior and David Lightbody will update the Junior games by Thursday morning. Please recheck schedule to ensure that you have the right time and place for your game!

Upcoming Social Events for your diary!

The Sturt Baseball Christmas Function will be held on Sunday 21 December 2008 at the Sturt Baseball Club, commencing at 6.00 pm. Please note this date down in your diary. This has been a tradition at our club for many years. Father Christmas will be in attendance and with the traditional games, running races etc, it is a great way to celebrate the Christmas break.

Division 1 (Coach: Tony Catt)
Game 1 Sturt 4 defeated Adelaide 0
In what was going to be an emotional day for the players, the boys stuck to the task of playing great baseball and getting our season back on track.
In his first appearance for the club, Per Sjors threw well and tied up the Adelaide hitters. He will get better as he gets more innings under his belt. Shane Horne then closed in fine fashion and is continuing to grow as a pitcher and is learning to be more versatile which is great to see. Keep setting the bar higher Shane.
Offensively we were a little disappointing but Angus Roeger's early home run was definitely a highlight.
Great win.
Hits - Roeger HR, Brice, Young, Holmes, Lee

Game 2 Sturt 5 defeated Adelaide 2
After listening to Stan Warrilow do a fantastic job on the sax playing the Saints go Marching in, it was time for the seniors to win another game. Dale Martens and Ben Packer were fantastic on the mound. Ben Packer in particular is making every step a winner and is showing the young boys how much it means to him to play at this level.
Tom Brice led the way with the bat with three hits but it was our solid defence that won the game. The field was fantastic and we are playing with growing confidence.
We will keep getting better.
Hits - Brice 3, Young 2, Stokes, Holmes, Hanvi, Turner.

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)

Sturt 8 defeated Adelaide 6
The boys got there season back on track with a hard fought win over the Angels. Craig Wright threw a solid game and will keep improving from that effort and Tom Winter finished the game off.
Jarad Holland continued his excellent early season form with three hits.
Well done.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
11-10 loss
Firstly let me apologise to all players and spectators for my meltdown after the game , it was not acceptable.
Before the game we talked about being more aggressive in the batting box and with the inclusion of Will Frogley the line up looked menacing.
11 hits for the day is about what we as a team should be aiming at. Will went 2-4 with a walk and also showed great leadership in the field. Zac Harnett also started off well with a double. Michael Robinson opened his account for the year getting a safe hit (way to hang in there Robbo). Tom Teague had a day out going 2-3 with a walk including a triple ( not a in the park home-run, sorry Tom). Best on ground today definitely goes to Ryan Mattschoss who had a great day behind the dish and a stellar day in the batting box going 3-4 with a double.
Nick Tuffnell had his first day out on the mound coming in in the 5th and did a great job pitching 3 digs only giving up 1 walk. I think that once we break through for our first win it will snowball and we will become a real force, we just have to believe in ourselves.

Division 4 (Coach: Peter Turner)
Gawler 9 d Sturt 2

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke)
Lost V Woodville 7 - 14
Hits - Wulff 3,Young 2, Day 1, Colyer 1, T Small 1 , Lee 1, Burns 1
For a team with such an expansive roster we were down to the bare 9 this week and with a few niggling injuries for some that played. We thought we had the opposition covered age wise this week, but not to be. Fair to say our pitchers struggled this week, except for Smally who shut them down in the last. Highlights, obviously being the Wulffman's 3 hits and Shrek's 2 RBI's and a double play through second with Smally able to make the bag but struggled with the throw, being sensationally picked up at first by the Zulu.
Look out next week opposition, we're coming for you !
Congratulations to the club and the Div 1 & 2 boys for a fantastic Centenary weekend ! - Go the Saints !

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin/Jason Hart)
Sturt v Adelaide Angels; Adelaide got on top winning 7 – 3.
An exceptional effort from the Sturt side seeing them close Adelaide out for four of the seven innings with no runs. One scrappy dig saw Adelaide score 4 runs that made the difference on the day. It was good to see consistent improvement in the team and a win is just around the corner.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)

It was a long way to have to travel after a late night from the centenary dinner for myself and unfortunately to come away with a loss made the trip home even longer. Again the boys gave up the early runs and after two innings we were 8-0 down, the final score was 9-3. We let to many runs in by pass balls and had some errors in the field that did not help, with the bats again we watch the strikes go over the plate instead of protecting the plate and swinging at them. Golden Grove's first pitcher did a good job for the first three innings and with loaded bases in the fourth they changed their pitcher, this was our chance to get some runs and give ourselves a chance but Golden Grove then had three strike outs. We need to learn to take what we do at training with the bats out to the games and probably start the games at the top of the third inning. So far this year we have given up 23 runs and out of those 23 runs only 4 runs have been scored after the second innings while we have made six runs this year with 5 of them coming after the second innings. We need to be switched on from the start of the game, maybe we need more purpose in the warm up.
Safe hits Tom Teague and Toby Cantrill 1 each

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Jeff Nicholas)
Sturt defeated Woodville 17-2 at Flinders on Sunday. Sturt batted solidly all game with long home runs to Jai and JBR. Defensively we didn’t have a lot to do as Jai and David kept the Peckers hitless through 5 innings. Thanks to Matt MacBeth for filling in.
Next Sunday we are at Kensington.
Hits; Brebner-Russ 4 Zak, Redigolo, Nicholas 2 Wood, MacBeth

Under 16/1 Saints (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
Congratulations go to East Torrens , they turned up to play, on the other hand we didn't turn up until the 3rd inning.Having said that 7 runs to this team should be more than gettable with our hitting line up.Instead we lost 7-6.Jordan Wayne got us off to a solid start pitching 3 digs just too many pitches using 76.Sam Hollis had a great day with the bat hitting a massive strike just missing a home run by 1 foot right.Dylan Holt hitting a double and Jarrad Small also consistantly in the lead off position getting his weekly hit.Player of the day would have to go to Dakota Mitchell hitting a great double over left field but coming onto the mound and throwing gas in his first couple of digs then showing he can throw his junk for strikes as well, throwing to only 13 batters in 3 digs , only 49 pitches(welcome back).Matty MacBeth doing another fine job behind the dish (keep it going you tank). Our attitude in the box needs to improve , 0-3 is not a true representation of this teams ability , we are a far better side than this, hopefully Sundays loss is the kick in the pants we need.Bring on Norths this week , time to turn it around.

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Glen McDonald)
A long hard day in the field against a strong hitting Goodwood team , meant we came crashing back to earth with a 23 to 9 loss. They looked to have played together for a while, were bigger and more experienced. Nevertheless we scored in each inning despite only getting 2 hits which is not good enough but we were getting runners on base. Jack Colmer had a hit and pitched well in his first start of the season but needs to learn to keep the ball down in the strikezone. Brett Mulryan put in a big effort behind the plate and Alex Furler whacked a stand up triple and made two nice plays at third base. A lot of work ahead of us but we move onto next week. Congratulations to all the organisers of the centenary weekend. What an outstanding effort,a great turnout and a worthy recognition of such a major milestone.

Under 14/1 Sturt Coach (Coach: Craig Gillespie)
Sturt 19 def East Torrens 0
Once again we scored 7 runs in the first dig and then ET had 3 up and 3 down after about 12 pitches.
To the boys credit they stayed focused in the batters box and didn't swing at too many bad pitches. The scoreline could have been a lot greater but we didn't steal bases and we didn't steal home on passed balls so the boys could keep on hitting. Sam Roberts and James Snelgrove both smashed Homeruns over the fence in a good day out.
The field didn't have too much work to do as ET only got 3 runners on base for the game as the boys also stayed focused in the field which was really pleasing. The boys could have very easily just wandered off as the game went on but they stayed on track and had a good game.
Well done boys and lets keep it up.

Under U14/2 - (Coach: Sturt Karen Tindall and Peter Duffield)
The Under 14 division 2 team lost 5 – 13 to Goodwood.
We could only managed 6 hits for the game and left 8 runners on bases. Brett Colmer with three hits was our best batter.
Our fielding errors helped the opposition team that just wanted to hit the ball.
We started with 8 players until Sam Cavanagh (Little League 1) filled in for us, making contact each time for his two at bats. Well done and thank you Sam.
Sam Duffield and Hayden Emery filled in as pitchers and performed admirably for their first time on the mound, under trying circumstances.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Kris McArdle)
Bye

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulff)
Sturt 16 def Glenelg 5
15 walks contributed to our scoring 16 runs but that did not matter to Max as he had 3 super hits including a triple. Our only other batter to get more than 1 hit was William who had 2. It was good to have Nick back playing again after getting hit with a ball in the mouth last week but unfortunately he had little opportunity to hit with 3 walks in the game.
Our pitchers again did well as we gave up only 7 walks in the 4 innings. Max had no walks in his 3 up-3 down inning of work while Arno gave up only 1 walk. Throwing strikes has been a key to our results thus far along with improving defense.
On the defensive side we had 2 good catches by Harry while playing shortstop, Daniel played well at 2nd base and Ryack did well in his first game as catcher. The play of the day, however, goes to Arno for fielding a hard hit ball in LEFT FIELD then having the presence of mind to know to throw to first base where his throw just did beat the runner for the out. A great play indeed and prooof that these boys are learning alot about the game in T Ball as Arno is a first year baseball player.
Thanks to Ralph for umpiring. Next week we are off to play the Eagles at West Torrens.

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Jamie Bishop)
Saints (20) defeated Southern Districts (8)
A great day at the office! The team (read parents + players) are already in the groove and a well oiled organization – so even when manager is away and coach is running late – they just make it happen!
(thanks guys!) With 2 away at Cub camp, we borrowed Reuben from the Majors and we were set to go!
From the first pitch we looked like we were there to deliver a baseball lesson… good disciplined pitch selection in the box – if it was there or close, it got hit… if not, nothing too wild got chased!
We batted(or were walked) through the total line up – with #9 batter Peter L finishing off with a crisp double and 2 RBI’s to mercy the 1st innings (5 runs)
This was the order of the day for all 4 innings – everyone was keen to hit, and if the showed us a strike, that’s mostly what happened! 4 innings, 4 mercy completions = 20 runs!
In the field the boys again looked sharp! Peter Littleyuile pitched the 1st innings and threw 8 pitches (only 1 was a ball!) - and the field backed him 100% to deliver 3 outs and leaving 2 on base with no runs in.
Reuben Bishop pitched the second dig -and with a 50% strike to ball average and nobody touched him – no hits, no runs, 3 K2’s and 1 left on base!
Ethan Egglestone threw our 3rd and started with a K2 – he then had to work hard to get control and never gave up to eventually finish off his innings with 3 runs in.
Finally Connor Dyer threw the last innings under tough conditions and tried his heart out as the Hawks bats finally woke up.
All played extremely well – it can be frustrating to face a lot of walks when you come out to hit… but the discipline is there and we have a great group of lads who get better every week!
Of particular mention was the extraordinary efforts of Tyson Ottaway behind the plate – in hot conditions he never let up – his coverage was astounding and he is shaping up to be an excellent catcher!

This is a historic week in the history of our baseball club! We have sold out the Centenary Dinner to be held on Saturday 1 November 2008! If you can't now get a ticket and want to join in the Centenary fun then please get down to the Club on Sunday 2 November!

Please note that the Division 3 Game for this weekend has been changed from 3 pm to 1 pm in order that our players can get to the Centenary Dinner. I would like to thank the Golden Grove Baseball Club and Ray Sharp for their willingness to move the game and for their best wishes for the night. Unfortunately Gawler Baseball Club were not prepared to move the Division 4 game from the allocated time of 3pm, so our Senior Coach Tony Catt will do some rearrangement of the teams on Saturday to place players who are not attending the dinner in the Division 4 side so that we don't need to forfeit the game!

Division 1 (Coach: Tony Catt)
Sturt 3 lost to West Torrens 13
The young team came out all guns blazing, taking a 3-2 lead into the 3rd but had a major hiccup. Through some excellent batting from West Torrens, we gave up 10 runs in the 3rd and from there it was difficult to work our way back into the contest.
To their credit, the boys fought it out well. Ben Packer did a good job once he settled into his task and will be better for the outing.
Offensively we are still swinging the bats well. Tom Winter has got his season going with a couple of timely hits and Angus Roeger was unlucky not to have walked away with 2 hits.
This group is on the right track, we just have to believe in ourselves.
Hits - Winter 2, Holmes, Hanvi, Brice, Young

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)

Sturt 4 lost to West Torrens 5
Shane Horne took the hill in this great match up against West Torrens and did an excellent job to have the Saints at a 4-1 lead in the 4th inning. Unfortunately, the boys couldn't capitalise on this start and got run down late in the game.
A disappointing loss. Offensively we need to do better than we are and make sure we don't rest on our laurels. If you get one hit, turn it into 3. Don't relax and make the most of every at bat. Defensively, the pitchers gave up too many 0-2 hits and ultimately paid the price.
A big game against Adelaide this week to make sure we get back in the winners circle.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
After a great start by Craig Wright and some aggressive batting by the boys we went out to a 6- 4 lead into the 6th against last years grand finalists. We finally went down 13-6. Craig Wright showed us and Goodwood what he was capable of, pitching an outstanding 3 digs until an injury brought him down. What a difference it makes when you have hitters in the line up who are willing to swing the bat. Dutchy a massive inclusion going 2 - 2 and a walk with a clutch double to score to RBIs. Justin Zak again collected another safe hit batting in the number2 spot. Tuffers and Mattchy also collecting a hit each. Telmo came on to pitch an innings and a half doing an outstanding job for his first pitch of the year also collecting 2 hits for the day.

Division 4 (Coach: Peter Turner)
We played goodwwod. We won 19 to 4. We had Stan Warrillow start on the hill. Ben Bicknell hit a homerun. Takashi Yokoyama had 3 safe hit for the game.

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke)
Lost vs Flinders 4-8
After coming out of the blocks early and rattling the bats to go to a 4-0 lead after the second innings and Rick Trembath going well on the mound, the younger bodies of Flinders caught up with us in the end. Shrek had a day out with the bat with 3 hits and a battling job behind the dish, Doc hit hard and deservedly had 2 RBI's in the first and Sluga made a sensational catch at shortstop that he didnt know he had Doc's shin knock on ground ball from third to second was nearly the highlight of the day, had an out been made Pop hit well with no luck and "the Small one" whinged about being on the bench until he wore me down and I hid him at first, finally getting "coach 2" out of my earshot. The Wulff man also battled hard on the mound. "Bear" come back, we miss you !
Hits : Colyer 3, Trembath 1 (1 RBI), Young 1 (2 RBI), Sluga (1 RBI)
A dinner for TC was held at the ED afterwards (thanks to the ED for their hospitality) and much merriment was had in TC's memory (as it should). We also wish to convey our condolences to the Angel family, our thoughts are with you.

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin/Jason Hart)
Sturt V East Torrens. Sturt went down to East Torrens 24 – 3. The score did not reflect the first couple of digs as Sturt batting line up did a good job to start. A notable mention to Justin Richardson who took a spectacular centre field catch and a nice little hit from Jules Potiki in scoring a stand up double. The teams still finding its feet but good things are on the horizon.

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)

Sturt (4) v Henley & Grange (5)
We travelled to Henley & Grange looking for our first win but unfortunately we gave up early runs and even though we made a late run could not get over the top of Henley & Grange. We found ourselves more interested in what the umpire was doing and calling than just playing the game. We need to learn that no matter what we say to the umpire he will not change his mind and we can not let this get in our heads. We again watched to many strikes over the plate and missed signals. We need to come to the games ready to play and enjoy ourselves for the 2 hours we play. We need to continue to talk at all times which is one thing the boys are good at but it must be positives to our team only. In the field we need to tidy up our mistakes and not give up easy runs. Again Jay Lunnon was good on the mound followed by Toby and we finished off with Jayke Wayne. Our pitchers had 9 strike outs and gave up only 4 walks with 5 safe hits to Henley & Grange, all boys pitched well. Henley & Grange had a couple of bleeders that did not help our pitchers. Trent Small was behind the plate all day and did a fantastic job. He and Bradley combined for a great throw out at second. We only had four safe hits which is way to low for these kids against the pitcher’s they faced on the weekend. We only need to stop the couple of errors in the field and swing at strikes and we will start winning.
Safe hits – Bradley 2. Tom and Jay 1

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Jeff Nicholas)
Sturt came from behind to defeat the Saints 12-8 on Sunday. Saints jumped out of the blocks scoring 8 in 2 innings but some errant pitching allowed Sturt to get back to 9-8.
Timely hits to JBR, Jai Redigolo and Jarrad Lobasso gave us a 3 run buffer in the 4th and Harrison Wood held the Saints out to save the game.
Saints batted well against some quality pitching and both teams can look forward to an exciting year of baseball.
Thanks to Sam Roberts (U14) for filling in for us on Sunday.
Hits Brebner-Russ 2, Redigolo, Lobasso

Under 16/1 Saints (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
We were playing the other Sturt team this week and after a disappointing loss the week before I asked the boys to be far more aggressive in the box, and boy were they! 7 safe hits and 8 runs in the first 2 digs. Then we stopped swinging the bats and only scored 1 run for the rest of the game.
Dylan got us off to a great start on the hill. We struggled to throw strikes and ended up giving up 8 runs for 2 hits (walks = runs).
Jordan Wayne came into the game and shut Sturt down only giving up 3 runs in the last. I gave the challenge to Jarred Small to lead off for us and he delivered getting 2 safe hits. Sam Hollis hit really well also collecting 2 hits, one was a double. Brad Trembath playing his 1st game for the year after breaking his wrist smashed a beautiful double late in the game. Best player was Matt MacBeth who caught a great game and going 3 -3 hitting the fence on every occasion, he hit a triple and 2 doubles. It seems like we stop for one dig and that is all it takes for these better sides to run over the top of us , we need to play all game. It is hard to take when you know we were the better side all day and lose 12-9, 9 hits to 4. Thanx to Daniel Lee for a great job umpiring.

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Glen McDonald)
After a first round bye we played our first game at Henley & Grange.

It was always going to be a 'see how it goes' sort of game and the good news is there were plenty of positive signs. Offensively, every player got on base and crossed the plate with Tim Kimber going 3 for 3, Cameron Mckinnon hitting an inside the park homerun, Paige Mattsson hit a nice line drive into left field, Alex Furler had a long double and Brett Mulryan had 2 hits to go along with a very solid pitching effort.

Hamish Straatman picked up 3 walks and Martin Kimber made 2 plays at second base before coming in to get the final 3 outs. Sam Osmond had a hit and is a welcome addition to our team and a special mention goes to Jack Colmer who was behind the mask in a game for the very first time and did an outstanding job. It was defensively that the team showed where a great deal of improvement can made but overall I liked what I saw. Final score Sturt 15 - H&G 11.

Under 14/1 Sturt Coach (Coach: Craig Gillespie)
STURT 28 def Henley & Grange 7
The boys came to play today which was great to see. We got the 1st innings off to a great start with 3 up and 3 down before we scored 7 runs without a single out. Everyone was hitting the ball but most importantly the boys were swinging at strikes and not bad pitches.
Defensively, we stayed focused for the whole game with players backing up and plenty of voice, Great to see.
After the 1st innings, we continued swinging the bat well and didn't really let up all game so it was a good positive performance from everyone.
Well done boys and lets build on this performance ready for East Torrens this week.

Under U14/2 - (Coach: Sturt Karen Tindall and Peter Duffield)
The under 14 division 2 won their first game for the season defeating Henley and Grange 15 – 8.
It was a great confidence booster for the boys. Our fielding, batting and base running improved greatly from last week.
We only gave up one unearned run and collected 10 safe hits.
Well done to Brett Colmer and Alex Renton for their work behind the plate and to Josh Tindall and Lazar Losic for their pitching efforts.
Lachlan Hooper and Sam Duffield continue their solid batting form, with Sam putting a ball over the centre field fence with bases loaded.
Well done boys.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Kris McArdle)
Sturt 15 Vs Adelaide 7 (Week 2)
Great game guys. Our bats where cracking all day and backed up with solid base running. All players got a hit today but special mention to Jordan McArdle, Charlie Goldworthy, Sam Cavanagh and Brodie MacBeth all batting 1000% for the day. Congratulations to Jordan for hitting a long ball over the fence for his first Home run for the year.
Zac Lunnon pitched another great game throwing 22 pitches 17 strikes and 5 balls in two digs. Zach Evreniadis also pitched well with 5 strikeouts in two digs. Sam battled hard to finish off the last dig keep working on it Sam. We need to work on our concentration levels at training and during the game. Well done today boys you all played very well. We have the bye this week , but will see you all at training on Tuesday and then at the Centenary day on Nov 2.

West Torrens 13 defeated Sturt 2 (Week 1)
HITS: Charlie Goldworthy 2, Jordan McArdle 1
West Torrens as always showed up with a very strong team this year was no exception, their first pitcher throw 9 strikeouts in 3 innings, I believe he will be the best pitcher we will see all year. I think we may have met our bench mark. I am not concerned at all boys as there where some great signs. Mitchell Lightbody throw very well for the first three innings and battled hard with the bat. Charlie Goldworthy had two hits for the day, made a great play at Short and then pitch 2 digs well done Charlie. Zach lunnon also pitched solid only giving away 2 runs to a fiery West Torrens batting line up. Good catching from Jordan McArdle who took a great foul ball catch, throw a runner out at second and backed up his day with a hit. Rueben Bishop show some skill with a double play and awesome catch at second. Boys take some positives out of the game you all battle hard in the batters box against a class under 12 pitcher, we will get onto him later in the year, no one dropped their heads we all kept trying until the end and to our credit scored the two runs in our last batting innings showing we never give up. See you all on Tuesday night, well done Sturt lets move on and start thinking about getting on top of Adelaide next week and work very hard on the track so we will be prepared to rock West Torrens about next encounter.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulff)
Another close game where we had to score 3 runs in the bottom of the last inning to win 10-9 over Goodwood. A ball to the mouth in pre game warmups saw Nick Evreniadis with a bloody lip and unable to play. Fortunately, it looks as though Nick did no damage to his teeth but his injury left us one player short.

Ryack Parsons was our starting pitcher and in his 2nd game of baseball and 1st time pitching he struck out 3 batters and gave up no runs. In our half of the first we scored the maximum 5 runs to hold a handy lead. Arno Norrito then pitched and in what was just his 2nd game of baseball and 1st time pitching he held the opposition to 1 run. He had some good help in the field, however, as our 2nd baseman, Matthew Amberg, stopped a bullet ground ball hit to him. Matt did not flinch but calmly blocked the ball, picked it up, and stepped on 2nd base for the 3rd out of the inning. Plays like that can go unrecognised and forgotten but it could easily have been a different result if not for that play.

Anyway, we scored 2 more in the 2nd inning with Damon Gray knocking in another run with a safe hit. Goodwood then scored 5 runs to get within 1 before adding another 3 to lead 9-7 into the last inning. Showing a never-give-up attitude the boys scored 3 runs on just 1 out to win 10-9, earning the right to belt out the club song led by William Hill.

William and Daniel Ortiz again did well behind the plate catching and Harry Tomlian was another first time pitcher for us. Jack Dawson was a standout as he had 2 solid hits and pitched well. We look forward to Nick and Max Staggs being available next week and joining us for practice on Thursday as we work on catching fly balls! Lastly, a big thank you to Bob B for umpiring at short notice.

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Jamie Bishop)
Match Report – Sun 26-10-08 LL Saints VS West Torrens – loss 11-5
The boys approached this week with great attitude and commitment and the improvement already from our first practice is very noticeable.
The required pitching rotation every innings is an addition to the rules that I believe is a good one at this age… if the boys don’t get a chance to sample pitching at this level, when will they?
Needless to say it does put first time pitchers “on the spot” – but the team is behind every one of them, and in these early days it is great experience for all.
This week we let James Davidson, Stewart Gardiner, Ethan Egglestone and Matthew Johnson all have an innings – and all did very well and tried their hardest.
A solid pitch effort to start with James … although starting a little shakily, he did work his way back and started throwing some good innings.
Then we had Stewart Gardiner who to everyone’s surprise and delight (including his!) threw rockets with great accuracy and k’d all 3 batters! One of the benefits of the sampling policy!
Followed by Ethan in innings 4 who worked hard and never gave up… had trouble finding the zone but then started locking on and ended up striking out 2 batters..
Finished by Matthew Johnson with a solid effort of concentration – including a sensational play from his first pitch – a red hot line drive to Ethan at short stop who gobbled it up and threw him out at 1st.
Fielding activity was minimal as West Torrens didn’t hit much … when a play was on we did well and kept the concentration up.
Perhaps the most exciting part for me was the batting - we saw hits from Connor, Tommy, Tyson, Angus, Ethan, Stewart and Peter – and EVERY batter looked comfortable, confident and ready to hit!
Notable efforts from Peter who ripped a very solid stand up double, and Ethan who slapped a triple with very good speed on the bases!
So onwards and upwards! Thankyou parents – it’s all good!

Match Reports Week 2

The season for Juniors commenced this weekend, with fantastic attendance at Junior get togethers on Thursday and Friday nights. It was great to see so many junior members and their parents at the club! In our Centenary year there is a great feeling around the club. Our Division 2 team under the leadership of Tom Winter has produced another win on Sunday to take them 2-2.

I had the opportunity to talk to some of the Division 2 players on Sunday who said the enthusiasm and positive feel in the dug out is something they have never experienced before! I am also aware in talking to our Senior Coach Tony Catt that we have had unprecedented numbers attending our Senior trainings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I think this is testament to the wonderful leadership that Tony is providing to our young side.

Our Division 1 side unfortunately was narrowly defeated by Kensington at home on Sunday, but I must say the boys played particularly well and great efforts came from a number of our juniors who are still young enough to be playing Under 18! The philosophy of our club has been to promote our juniors on ability and effort and today I think it was clear to see that the philosophy and building blocks are there to develop a very competitive Division 1 side. Well done to all of our Senior squad for their total committment to our club.

When one talks about committment and enthusiasm it is worth reading the article on young Adam Bender from Lexington Kentucky in the US who catches baseball with only one leg!

Division 1 (Coach: Tony Catt)
Sturt 10 lost to Kensington 14

This was a much better effort than last week with the boys playing with much better intensity. Their application in the batters box was also much improved providing quality at bats. After leading 5-2 the boys just could get the job done defensively but we will learn a lot from the game.

Pat Burns had another quality outing and just continues to improve game by game. His willingness to learn and improve is what will set him up for future success.

Angus Roeger and Paul Holmes are starting to show the talent they possess at Division 1 level now with both picking up 3 hits. Angus was particularly impressive on the day with a 3 run home run in the 7th inning to tie the game up. Fred Hanvi also picked up his first couple of hits for the club.

Zac Stokes showed enormous maturity yesterday in crucial situations, picking up 3 hits. His voice and leadership on the field is invaluable.

We will build on this game, continue to train hard and face West Torrens this weekend with a lot of confidence.

Hits - Roeger 3 (HR), Holmes 3, Stokes 3, Hanvi 2, Winter, Lee

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)

Sturt 8 defeated Kensington 3

Another stirring performance for the B grade with all players contributing to the win.

Dale Martens turned in a quality start and looked like he was beginning to show some good signs. We know what he is capable of and look forward to some consistency from him. Ben Packer finished the game off strongly and is demonstrating the best start to a season he has had in seniors.

Offensively, everyone chipped in but special mention to Tom Faehse who hit the ball particularly well.

Great job.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
Another disappointing result, going down 5-1 to reigning premiers was a great effort and the boys should hold their heads high. Defensively we were very good. Outstanding effort by Zac Harnett in left field, Dakota Mitchell again another solid game at short stop. Justin Zak came in for his first senior game with agreat effort at 2nd and also getting his first senior safe hit well done. To only get 3 safe hits in 7 digs against pitching that wasn't that outstanding was disappointing to say the least, time has come that we need to be a little smarter in the box. Well done to Michael Robinson who caught well all day.

Division 4 (Coach: Peter Turner)
We played Port Adelaide and we won 11 to 3. We had a good game. Cameron Jaillet and Simon Gooley with 2 hits each. We had todd Griffith, Matt Saint and David Carter on the hill.

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke)
Div 5 v Southern Districts won 14-2

We played at home for the second week and were looking to improve on our last game. We had Ben (Catty) Catterall start on the mound and almost had 3 up 3 down only a HPB stopped that, happy to say no errors in the field. First at bat and with the Southern District pitch throwing water melons we only had one safe hit to Mark (pop) Burns in the first and all out with a bad call to Don (Wulffy) Wulff. Second innings we gave up one run and had our first and only error for the day coming from a wild throw from Tim (Forest) Zak, our second innings at bat did not start well with Rodney (Junior) Angel giving short stop an easy catch but we then scored 3 before being all out. In the field we held them scoreless in the next two innings while we went on to light the bats up and score 7 runs (6,1). Ben Catterall did a fantastic job on the mound all day giving up only 4 safe hits for the day and 1 walk. The game finished in the fifth innings with the mercy rule with us winning 14-2. Best on ground for the day goes to David Lee who was stung by a bee on the neck while sitting on the bench in the second innings and having to leave for some medical supplies before returning to watch the rest of the game.

Safe Hits: 3 to Burns, Small, Trembath - 2 to Colyer, Day, Angel, Catterall, Zak - 1 to Wulff

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin/Jason Hart)
Norths 12 d Sturt 4

We got off to a bad start with only 8 players showing up so thanks to David Lightbody for filling in for us Jase did well with the bat 3 from 3, Tom Pledge got a couple good hits. We made a few errors but it was a better game than we played the first week. The important thing is we are having fun, (and getting out of doing the house work!)

Under 18 (Coach: Chris Small)

Under 18's v West Torrens lost 9-1

The boy's played West Torrens at home for their first game and did very well for their first hit out. We gave up early runs to West Torrens and struggled against their first pitcher. Jay Lunnon started on the mound and got us a lot of ground balls unfortunately we made some early errors in the field and allowed 9 runs in the first three innings while only scoring one run ourselves. Toby Cantrill took over from Jay and the field cut the errors out, Tom Teague came in after Toby and finished the game off with the Sturt boys holding West Torrens scoreless for the last four innings. We need to work on our batting and make sure we hit strikes only and leave the rest alone but that will come. We gave up 11 safe hits and 5 walks for the day.

Safe Hits for us one to Toby Cantrill and Tom Teague.

Thanks go to Matthew MacBeth and Harrison Wood for helping out and filling in for us and to Alistair Young for coming out and umpiring.

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Jeff Nicholas)
Sturt defeated North 24-2 at Flinders. Harrison Wood held North to 3 hits and struck out 4 in 3 innings We play Saints next week at home in what should be a very close game.

Hits; Brebner-Russ 4 Zac, Nicholas 3 Papps, Wood 2 McFarlane, Lamonby

Under 16/1 Saints (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
11-7 loss is not the start we all hoped for considering we were playing a team I thought we should have beaten. Dylan Holt has continued his great pre-season form with another outstanding effort on the hill, he pitched 4 very good digs. Jordan Wayne had a brilliant game at 3rd base, he then came onto the mound and pitched well with no luck. Ben Young had an outstanding game in the field and also in the box collecting 2 hits and 2 walks (another Young coming through) 4 stolen bases. Matt MacBeth an outstanding game behind the dish also collecting a hit as well. Not enough hits too many strike outs cost us. We have to stop watching fat pitches early in the count and getting ourselves down in the count, we need to be far more aggressive in the box.

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Glen McDonald)
Bye

Under 14/1 Sturt Coach (Coach: Craig Gillespie)
West Torrens 8 v Sturt 7

Welcome everyone to the start of a new season which will hopefully bring plenty of enjoyment to all involved. Although we didn't get the season off to start we were looking for, there were still plenty of positives to be taken from the game. The boys tried hard all game but just seamed to lack that little spark that was needed to get us over the line. We hit the ball and ran the bases hard and fielded pretty well.

There is still plenty we need to work on as we have a very young squad so I look forward to the weeks ahead and I'm sure the boys will see their own improvement and that of the team.

Let's enjoy this week at training and look forward to our next game.

I'd also like to thank all the sponsors once again for coming on board and supporting both our team and the Sturt Baseball Club.

Under U14/2 - (Coach: Sturt Karen Tindall and Peter Duffield)
The Sturt under 14 division 2 team opened their season with a loss to Glenelg losing 14 – 13.

The boys played well for their first game, considering their limited preparation and that three boys were making their baseball debuts.

Lachlan Hooper pitched for three innings and picked up two hits, Miro Van Rensburg hit 2 for 4 with 4 RBI’s and Lazar Losic caught 2 long outfield hits.

Joshua Tindall hussled all day behind the mask.

A great first effort by all the boys and they should take some confidence into next weeks game.

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Kris McArdle)
West Torrens 11 d Little League 1 - Sturt 0

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulff)
LL2 Sturt (9) defeated LL2 Saints (7)

First game of the season and first Baseball game for more half the team. These new players are ex. T-Ball players for Sturt and have played in the All Stars team, but still all nervous and un-sure about the Baseball. This showed in the first to two Innings with no score. Then in the last two Innings, 4 and 5 home Total 9, the boys were on fire.

Congratulations to all the team, great effort by the Pitchers, Max Staggs, Jack Dawson, Mat Amberg and Damon Gray. Fantastic catching by William Hill and Daniel Ortiz.

The LL2 Sturt team is now a Baseball Team…… first game over and into the season we go!!

Acting Coach, Richard Staggs.

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Jamie Bishop)

Few hours left to pay for your Centenary Dinner Tickets!

You only have till 12 midnight Friday 17th October 2008 to pay for the Centenary Dinner.

We have had a good response during the week and there may be a few payments that we have yet to update on the official list, but this is a reminder you only have a few hours left!

As previously advised, the Treasurer and I will be reconciling the official list over the weekend and early part of next week.

If resources permit we will contact those that have not paid but don't assume we will do this as we may not have the capacity.

In the end, we will remove people from the list that have not paid and we will then send final and confirmed lists to Table Captains as well as updating the official list.

Please also double check that your name is on the list if you are intending on attending the function.

Programming Update for this weekend!

I write to advise you that the SABL have made significant changes to the Senior Programme particularly for Divisions 5 and 6 where the complete draw for both of these Divisions has been changed. We have updated our website to reflect these changes, but given the fluid nature I would advise you to also check the SABL website. It has been our experience in the past seasons that the SABL can continue to make adjustments right up to Friday night before the games, so I would urge you to double check both our website and the SABL.

I will endeavour to advise you if there are any further late changes.

As you are aware this weekend our Junior Teams also commence and all Junior Team Schedules have also be loaded on to our website. You can have a quick glance at the next three games on the front page of our website.

If you are not sure what Junior Team your child is playing in, this information is also available on our website. Go to the top menu and click on teams>juniors>team lists and then select your child's team. Details about your coach and contact details are also available from the same menu or you can go to about>people which lists all coaches and club officials and will be a handy guide for email addresses and phone numbers for anyone new to our club.

Best of luck to all Junior Teams for their first hit out for the season!

Division 1 (Coach: Tony Catt)
After a great preseason, the young Saints team had an air of optimism going into game one against reigning premiers Port Adelaide. Unfortunately the cards did not fall our way early and we could not work our way back into the game. There were not too many shining lights on the day.

Congratulations to Sam Day and Ali Young with their first A Grade starts. Welcome to Fred Hanvi as well. Fred is signed with the Minnesota Twins and is from France. Please make him feel welcome at the club.

Paul Holmes and Daniel Lee started there season well with a great batting display while Pat Burns did an excellent job in difficult circumstances on the mound.

Every week we learn, and the next week we need to put that learning into practice.

Sturt 3 lost to Port Adelaide 13

Hits - Holmes 2, Lee, Roeger, Young

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)
Sturt 7 defeated Port 5

A fantastic effort by the Division 2 side. Ben Packer started really well, controlling the game. He handed the ball to Craig Wright in his first start for the club. Craig arrives at Sturt from Mt Gambier. He is a very promising, tall right handed pitcher who will get better and better as the season goes on.

Offensively, Jared Holland, Jimmy Passmore and Jackson Brebner Russ were standouts.

Congratulation to Jackson in his first B Grade start and the young fella thrived on the pressure! Picking up 2 hits and catching well. Well done Jacko.

Well done boys, the hard work in preseason is paying off.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)

After an outstanding start to the game scoring 4 in the first dig and holding them in the first couple, the wheels fell off. Errors wernt made but its fair to say opportunities were not taken, those at the game would agree.

With only 5 hits from the day there isn't much to report in the batters box.

A special mention to Tom Teague who came on the mound in the 4th and pitched the best I had seen of him and gave all that he could.

Dakota Mitchell also played a good game at short making a few clutch plays.

Michael Robinson also did a fine job behind the dish. With the side we put onto the field ther is no way in the world we should have lost 10-6 to a side that we should have beaten easily. Next time boys we will play the whole game.

Division 4 (Coach: Peter Turner)
We had a good game against Adelaide knowing it was 8 all.

We had Matt Saint on the mound. We have two new guys from Woodville, namely Matt Saint and Cameron Jaillet. Jamie Knuckey had 3 hits for the game and Kris Mcardle hit a homerun.

Division 5 (Coach: Dean Franke)
Kensington 7 d Sturt 4

Division 6 (Coach: Craig Martin)
Div 6 Kensington 18 d Sturt 5

Well it started good with Jason on the mound we got the 1st out then we all fell in a hole, Jas did well as did Josh behind the plate while not feeling the best he gave his all. Also Adam Martin hit a 3 run homer well done Adam. Trev did a good job as reliever on the mound. All in all we had fun which is what div6 is all about & we got rid of 1st game shakes

Keep Cruzin

Two weeks left to pay for Centenary Dinner Tickets!

Further to my previous email I write to reiterate to you that only people whose names appear on the Dinner List and have paid for their tickets will be admitted to the Sturt Centenary Dinner on 1 November 2008.

This is the second to last reminder that will be issued!

I write to advise you that there is only two weeks left to pay for your tickets for the Centenary Dinner. Payment must be received by the Sturt Baseball Club by Friday 17th October 2008.

At the moment less than half the people who have registered to attend the dinner have paid! The Sturt Baseball Club does not have the resources to follow up people individually!

There are three ways to pay:

1. At the Bar when it is open. EFTPOS facilities are available
2. Pay online
3. Send a cheque to the Treasurer stating your name and any other names of people for whom you are paying. The Treasurer's address is: 27 Trevorten Ave Glenunga 5064

In the week commencing Monday 20th October 2008, within the resources available attempts will be made to contact Table Captains to advise them of the names removed from their table and whether their table remains viable. I will publish a final list later that week which will show the final names and numbers who have paid. It is everyone's responsibility to check if their name is on the final list.

There is no possibility of paying on the night so once your name is removed from the list you will not be able to attend the function.

Please note that if you have paid for your tickets in the last few days then your name may not appear on the list as paid, however as of Friday morning only a handful of people had paid since the list had been updated so it relatively accurate.

Click here to access the relevant information.
