Update on Finals Draw!

Following negotiations with the SABL we have now been successful in having all our Junior Teams in the finals this weekend.. We also were able to correct a Premiership table error for Dean Franke's team, clarify the status on one other game to confirm who we were playing and confirm that the Little League Saints actually made the finals. These changes have now been made to our website and also to the SABL website. However, due to the fluid nature of this programming I have asked all coaches and managers to double check the SABL website again on Saturday morning just in case any other last minute changes are made. I think that we have now pointed out to the SABL the various issues and hopefully this is the final draw for this weekend. I appreciate this is frustrating for everyone, but our primary objective is ensure we get the correct draw for all of our teams who have worked so hard through the season. May I take this opportunity to wish all of the teams every success on Sunday!

Week 19 Results and First Finals Info

Well the finals are now upon us! Late today the SABL have released the draw for the finals. I have placed the information on our website front page in the usual place or you can click here to access the page. You should also double check the SABL website to ensure that there have been no last minute changes! I will attempt to keep up with any changes, but this is the responsibility of everyone to triple check that we are in the right place at the right time for the finals!

It is fantastic to see our Division 2 side playing off for a place in the Grand Final! It has been some time when we have had a team of this seniority playing off for a spot in the Grand Final, so I am know all the Club is behind the boys in their quest!

We have once again had an outstanding result with our junior teams, with all but one, playing off in the finals this weekend! This is a tribute to both our players and coaches and augers well for the future!

Further evidence of our success at the junior level has been the recent announcement of the South Australia School Boys Team, consisting of Pat Burns, Daniel Lee, Alistair Young and Sam Day. Congratulations to these boys! We wish them every success in the tournament!

I am pleased to report that we have had a great response to the Bowling Night for this Saturday 23 February 2008 at the Hawthorn Bowling Club, 86 Monmouth Road, Hawthorn. The event will run from 7.00-10.00 pm, with the bar being open!

The cost for the night is $10 for players over 15 years. Players under 15 years are free! You need to pay on the night!

If you haven't yet let your coach know that you are coming it is not too late! Please make every effort to attend. I will look forward to catching up with you all on the night.

I would also like to remind Sponsors that you have a special invitation to attend our Club for the final game for Division 1 on Sunday 24 February 2008 from 3.00 pm. Any sponsors who have not yet let me know please email me as soon as possible as we need to finalise numbers.

We also have invited all Past Players to attend our Club on Sunday as well, so if you know of Past Players please encourage them to come along!!

On a much lighter note, following much encouragement from our Division 5 coach Chris Small, I played my first game of baseball on the weekend! For your amusement, you can view photos and videos of the event by clicking here! Chris Small has provided a blow by blow description of the event in his match report, but I will say that I was very pleased to get a safe hit on my first at bat and get to first!! I would like to thank not only Chris but the Division 5 boys for their encouragement and teaching me some of the very basic skills of baseball. I had a great time and also very much appreciated the encouragement provided to me by the Southern Districts Baseball Club. The bad news is that given that the game was moved from Sturt to Southern Districts I will be making a return performance next season on our home ground!!

With Paul Mildren and TJ sharing pitching duties against Adelaide who were desperate for a win to keep their finals hopes alive, the team was quietly confident. However, Adelaide got hits at crucial times and put the pressure on us from the start. Unfortunately we never got going offensively and ended up losing 8-1. The team was disappointed with this result and will look to bounce back for the final game of the year.

Division 2 Match Report - Elimination Final
The B Grade travelled down to Port in the teams first finals appearance for 7 years. Shane Horne pitched magnificently for 7 innings, holding Port to just 2 runs. The bats came alive in the fourth inning with 2 out as the Saints piled on 8 runs with some great clutch hitting. Port made a run at us late in the game but with the ever improving Pat Burns there to close proceedings out, the Saints won a memorable game 8-7! Everyone contributed well and this will need to happen again next week as we face Glenelg for a shot at the Grand Final. Make sure you get out to watch the boys play

Seven runs in the 4th and look at the damage.
We were on top most of the day and loaded the bases regularly but we still couldn’t manufacture enough runs to get the job done.
Carts started on the mound and did pretty well although a few too many walks didn’t help his cause..plus hitting a couple of them added to the problem.
Simon Gooley continued his good form with the bat picking up 3 hits including a comebacker that spreadeagled the umpire as if he was shot. I’ll remember that one.
After a loss to bottom of the table East Torrens on Wednesday night when we required the services of the Mulryan clan to field a team, the 4’s are struggling at the wrong time of the year. We can only hope the SABL does not change the rules on finals as looks likely. They have never allowed draws as part of the win/loss ratio but looks like they will this year which will put us out. Lets hope we can convince them to keep the existing calculations which will put us 4th. Although the walking wounded will struggle to come up with a team as Kris McArdle has a wedding, Simon Gooley a hamstring strain and young Mark Colmer a torn calf muscle.
Watch the website to see if we are playing!!!!!

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)
Div 5 Sturt V Southern Districts
The day and time finally arrived for the President to play his first game of the season and his life. He had been secretly training in his backyard with his Son and Daughter, although it sounds like they spent more time on the ground laughing than playing catching, he even talked his son into throwing some batting practice!

He had a bead of sweat on his brow and that was before the game, you could see the nerves and his main artery was sticking out his neck beating a million miles an hour. We went into the field first as this was our home game even though it was played at Southern Districts and in the first innings the ball was hit to right field and you guessed it who was out there, the President, he did a fantastic job diving and taking a great catch OH sorry I think that's the way he saw it go in his head, but he did not let the ball go past him and the runner only got to first!!

It was great to see both teams give him a fantastic cheer and see him smiling. Two runs scored at the end of the innings and into bat we go, the President was our lead off batter and after a hand shake from their catcher up he stepped. He hit the ball it went up in the air and over the first base and second base heads to fall in for a safe hit, with his speed he made it to first, unfortunately he did get thrown out at second but did break up the double. We scored three to go one in front.

Out to the field we went and again a fly ball out to right field bouncing in front of Phil and again it did not get past him! His second at bat saw him hit straight back to the pitcher for an easy out. He ended the day batting .500 not bad for his first time and with no errors in the field. Unfortunately for us we went down 16 -12 to end our season. We had a great day for our last game and hopefully we will get the President out for one more game but it will be at home so we can get a bigger crowd.

To the boys we started of the season with some tragedies early but for all we stayed together and finished of the season the way we always do having a laugh and just enjoying the game of baseball. Some life long friends have been made playing this game and I only hope that they all come back to play next year.

Thanks to all our supporters for coming out to watch some old men and some young up and coming baseballers play a game they love.

I would like to thank Dean Franke, Glenn Young, Mark Burns, Barry Lunnon, Don Wulff, David Lee, Ben Colyer, Tim Zak, Rodney Angel, Rick Trembath, Brett MacBeth, Garry Wood, David Lightbody and Jeff Nicholas for playing through the season at some time, I would also like to thank Trent Small, Jarrad Small, Ben Young, Alistar Young, Bradley Trembath, Justin Zak, Matthew Franke and Jayke Wayne as these junior players filled in at some time during the season also.

We as a team will always remember the laughs and fun had with the late Trevor Colmer.

Twilight Game:Saints v Henley & Grange 14/02/08: 14-12

Talk about a nail biting game. This was one that we needed to win to maintain our position on the ladder. 3 all at the bottom of the 1st & then an 8 run (to 3) 2nd innings by H&G saw them start to pull away. We came back with 3 runs in the 3rd & kept H&G scoreless. 3 to their 1 in the 4th saw the game at 12 all with only minutes to go. Back out we went & scored 2 more runs, with a runner on base, side away. H&G came in determined to win & whilst their 1st batter made it round to 3rd, that’s as far as they got. It was side away in 5 to the end result 14-12.

The sun played havoc for both teams. There were quite a few fly balls missed simply because the fielders could not see them. It was safer to let the ball hit the ground & play it from there. Brodie Blanks started off on the mound & considering that he had not pitched since 05/12/07, did very well. Ben Papps followed but had to battle with quite a few questionable calls, no doubt because the umpire also had the sun in his face. Both pitchers were backed up by some great plays in the field, particularly thru’ 2nd base (Ben) & shortstop (Sam). Josh Grantham caught a couple of balls that were drilled thru’ 3rd base, one of those being the catch that saw side away, & game, at the bottom of the 5th. Whilst we were getting bat to ball, we had more than our share of fly balls during the game, some caught, some not (thank goodness), no doubt due to the sun. Ben Papps, Sam Hollis & Simon Evreniadis each crossed home plate 3 times. These guys just don’t like hanging around on bases – they will steal on anything.

A great game, a great result – well played everyone.

Tough game for us, going down to the Cardinals in the bottom of the last inning, 15-14. Despite the loss the boys can be very proud of the year they are having as we are in the finals after a 3rd place showing during the regular season. It's unclear at this stage who we play on the weekend but it doesn't matter, the boys have done very well.

As usual we had some very good performances, including Tyson Ottaway with a super job catching, as well as picking up 2 hits, and a great play by Harry Tomlian at 2nd base. We had our fair share of injured warriors, as well, with Tyson, William Hill, and Chris Wulff all suffering some form of injury during the game (or before it!).

I really appreciate how the guys encourage each other and never give up. It's been a noticeable quality in these guys all season so while some might be a touch 'excited' about the finals their mates will be spurring em on.

The "I am Baseball" initiative is calling for the participation of players in an international marketing campaign to tell those in higher places how you came to love the game and want to see it back in the Olympic program. The initiative is also calling for celebrities who are Baseball fans who have a high public profile.

Division 1 Match Report - Game 1
The A Grade faced a strong East Torrens in Game 1 of the double header knowing that we can spoil some clubs run into the finals by capturing a couple of wins. We send Paul Mildren to the mound as he gets himself back in shape to return to spring training. Paul was exceptional as he threw 4 scoreless innings and then handed the ball to TJ who closed proceedings out for a great 5-1 win.
We picked up 10 hits for the game against there import pitcher which showed improved maturity from our hitters as this season has gone on. Pleasing to note was that everyone got a hit. Contributions from everyone is required to beat the top sides.
Hits - Roeger 2, Holmes, Stokes, Turner, Hajtmar, Stanton (HR), Lee, Winter, Adkins

Division 1 Match Report - Game 2
Trying to keep the intensity up through the second game was the challenge for the group and unfortunately we gave up 7 runs in the 2nd inning which put us behind the 8 ball. To the teams credit, we fought the game out to eventually lose 11-6 but there were many positives. We out hit ET with 15 hits to 10. We left 15 runners on base and Telmo was excellent on the mound through 5 innings. Paul Holmes continued his great form with the bat picking up 4 hits.
Hits - Holmes 4, Hajtmar 3, Lee 2, Turner 2, Winter 2, Stanton, Adkins

In what was a must win game for the B grade to ensure a finals berth, Ben Packer and Tom Winter pitched well to hold Henley & Grange down. Offensively the team did enough without anything special to run out 8-5 winners. Particular mention to Rick Mitchell for picking up 3 hits in crucial circumstances.
The B grade now face Port Adelaide in an elimination final. This game is down at Port on Saturday beginning at 1pm. Make sure you get down there to support the boys!

Sturt 10 East Torrens 4

A lacklustre effort saw Div 4 scrape home against bottom of the table ET on the weekend.

After threatening to blow the game away early and looking possibly at a mercy job, we just couldn't push the runs across the plate to give ourselves an early minute. Batting honours went the way of Simon (no stolen base) Gooley again. He is really starting to hit well and at the right time of the year.

We welcomed back Todd Griffiths for his first game of the year and he played pretty damned well. Hope to see more of him this year and next.

We have booked a couple of players in for English lessons at the Panorama TAFE this week. Obviously ‘back’ is Hebrew for run in as fast as you can and then go back when the ball is over your head.

This week we play our catch up game against East Torrens on Wednesday night followed by the final minor round game against Souths at home this Saturday. Depending on results from this weekend we may grab second spot on the ladder for the finals with a win on Saturday. Hope to see some of you there.

Just checked the SABL website and we can get second spot now as Souths beat Norths.

Also, a big thank you to Norm for the barbie Div 4 had on Saturday night at his place. It was great to just sit around having a few drinks away from the diamond with team-mates as we head to the finals.

(Report from Mark Colmer)

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)
This was meant to be the President's first game of baseball and at home but as usual the SABL has made a last minute change and moved the game to Southern Districts. So please come and watch him in a game that should be interesting specially if you have a video recorder. Game time is 3 pm.

We had a bye this week.

Saints v West Torrens 19-3.
3-0, 11-2, 19-3. A fantastic result & in 3 innings. But are we too late? We have played WT 3 times across the season & have been beaten each time, the closest result being last weeks game to a 4-5 loss. This week it was our turn & the team went out with all guns blazing. Josh Grantham “led the charge” with a fantastic job on the mound holding WT to their 3 runs with 55 pitches (v 147 from WT). Batting was very good & whilst we did have a number of strike-outs, everyone managed to get on base & home. Field work was good, base running was excellent & with a comfortable lead at the top of the 3rd, we restricted this to only running on hits. This would have to be one of the best games played by the team this season. A lot of talking in the field & we even had players taking turns on 1st base giving signals to the batter – although watching from 3rd, a good many of those signals seemed to be telling the batter to “steal”. Mmm!!
We play Henley & Grange on Thursday & Woodville on Sunday & if the team can gel as they did yesterday, we should finish the season with another 2 wins.
Well done everyone for a great game.

Once again the Sturt boys came ready to play! After a huge improvement last weekend the boys continued their newfound form and enthusiasm to account for a very competitive Kensington outfit. (We did score a further 6 runs with none out in the top of the 6th innings but time ran out and scores reverted back to the 8 to 4 scoreline).

The bats were quiet early against one of the better pitchers we have faced and after being held scoreless in the first we scored 3, 1, 2 and 2 in the next 4 innings.

While all the bats didn't fire 2 particularly did. Jordan Wayne had an absolute night out collecting 4 from 4 and Matthew Macbeth smashed the ball to all parts of the field including 2 home runs, 1 of which was huge !

Jordan also pitched by far his best game of the season to throw all but the last out of the game when relieved by Harrison Wood. Jordan threw 79 pitches of which 47 were strikes but most of those that missed were right around the mark! Well done mate, learn from it, and as we discussed after the game, you don't need to throw at 100 mph to get the outs and pitch a great game!

The improvement in the 1 %'s was very significant and the support both for the batters and in the field was by far the best this season. We need to continue doing the team and small things in the game and I believe last night we showed some glimpses of what this team could be!

Still a long way to go and we are not getting carried away , but the signs are good and the boys are very determined to keep winning.

Make sure the same 10 boys turn up to play South's on Sunday boys !

GO STURT !!!!

Versus Southern Districts 10th February 2008

Sturt 3 1 3 3 7 Total 17

After a slow start the Sturt boys hit their straps and dominated the game against lowly Southern Districts. Again there was significant improvement over our previous 2 games.

The bats were relatively quiet early but we still managed to score 3, 1, 3 , 3 and 7 in the 5 innings.

Dakota Mitchell pitched an outstanding game, rarely missing the strike zone by very much and Bradley Trembath caught another great game to cement his position for the finals behind the mask.

You can see from the safe hitters list that all the boys enjoyed one of the teams better hitting outings of the season and all contributed to the result.

Again there was improvement in the "small things" particularly in regards to the level of support of our batters and in the field. We still have lots of areas to improve and we need to continue doing the small things in the game.

Yesterday showed what a team that plays as a group with the team in mind can achieve!

Now it gets very hard, with Sunday's game against West Torrens a prelude to the following weeks game of 1 vrs 2 in the first week of finals.

Good luck boys, believe in your ability, and be the best you can !!

Once again we did it the hard way, but we need to improve our application in a hurry as finals will be with us very soon. We need to win our next 2 games against Southern Districts on Wednesday and Sunday to get back to playing good consistent baseball again.

Myself and, I'm sure the parents are hoping for a much improved effort over the next 2 games.

How wonderful it felt for the boys to be on the right side of the result again.
A much more disciplined and desperate batting display with everyone hitting the ball or getting on base.
We picked up 15 hits and Matt had 3 BB's and 1 HPB.
Jesse pitched a great game including a great pick off and Matt came in to finish the game.
Henry particularly tried hard behind the mask and Hamish made the outs routine from shortstop.
Although we did go to sleep and not glove the ball for some easy outs when required and could have perhaps had an even better result.
Highlight of the day was to see Luke getting his first hits of the season and Rohan being positive in the box and hitting the ball hard.
Finally, our 7 to 9 batters are contributing which makes a huge difference.
We play Glenelg this week and a must win to stay in the double chance spot.

Sturt 12 defeated by Kensington 13

A very good team effort by the boys. Offensively we were very good with all players contributing with the bat with many 2 base hits and a home run each by Max Guehrer and Jordan McArdle. Henry Brennan pitched very well throwing hard and accurate. Lewis Brideson and Brett Colmer also pitched well. We really had our chances to win this match however a few small errors in the bottom of the 4th eventually cost us the match.
The finals are coming up shortly and we are as good as any team in the competition, so if we can continue working hard on the little things we have every chance to take out the premiership.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulff)
In yet another mid week game we played the Saints and lost 14-11. Despite the loss the boys never gave up, cheering each other on right up to the end.

Our boys hit the ball well but good defense by the Saints prevented us from scoring in the first inning. With a runner on 1st Braydon Richardson hit a smash line drive to their 3rd baseman, who caught the ball and made a good throw to first for the double play. Later in that inning Brodie MacBeth hit a deep fly to the outfield with their centre fielder making another fine catch.

We had some fine defensive plays of our own with Jackson Blanks making a good out on a ground ball to 2nd and Chris Wulff making a good pick up of a ground ball at 3rd base. In the outfield there was plenty of action and while they often hit the ball where our guys weren't Tyson Ottaway showed great arm strength with some of his throws to the infield. Hayden Emery did well pitching, again throwing a good percentage of strikes. Recognition of Henry Wood's efforts catching must be mentioned. Henry is an aggressive catcher, showing a willingness to throw the ball to all bases. He made a great play on a slow grounder he picked up and threw to 1st to just get the runner. Special mention to my 1st base coach in the last inning. Harry Tomlian was enthusiastic, positive, and very helpful of his teammates as he coached them around the bases.

We play next Tuesday at Kensington with a 6:00 start.

Week 17 Results

We have had a busy week with a number of twilight games being held during the week. On Wednesday night our Division 2 side travelled to Henley and Grange and came home with a 7-3 win! On Sunday we were not quite so fortunate with both our Division 1 and 2 sides suffering losses, but with our Division 1 side facing equal placed Port Adelaide a 2-1 loss was an admirable result and augers well for our future!

Congratulations to Angus Roeger who played his first Claxton Shield game in Melbourne on Saturday. Angus came off the bench to pick up two hits. Victoria won the first game 9-5 on Friday and the final match 12-0 but was beaten by South Australia in Game 2. Paul Mildren pitched and Tom Brice also played so Sturt were very well represented! Well done to our three boys who represented our club at the highest level!

Baseball SA have also announced try outs for the Australian Secondary School Baseball Association 2008 Annual Championships. Trials will be conducted at Seaton High School – Glenburnie Street, Seaton on Friday, February 15, 2008 – 5:00pm to 7:00pm and Saturday, February 16, 2008 – 9:30am to 11:30am. Further details are available on the SABL website.

Port Adelaide 2 defeated Sturt 1
Coming off a win against West Torrens we faced equal 1st Port Adelaide. TJ started for us and it was a tough baseball game being tied 0-0 after 3 innings. In the 4th we picked up a few hits and tried to destroy Port’s 10 game winning streak by scoring the first run of the game. With great efforts from TJ and some fantastic fielding we held them scoreless until the 6th. This is when they pulled some hits together and scored 2 runs. We had another couple of goes at them but lacked a few key hits. Our pitching and fielding continued and we kept the top team to only 2 runs. I was very pleased with our boys’ efforts for the day. We proved that we could match it with the best of them. We actually out hit Port 7-6 hits, which was very good. This week we have a tough double header against East Torrens so please come out and support our boys in blue. We play at home on Sunday with the first game starting at 12.30.

After beating the third placed team last week, then having a good mid week win, we came up against 4th place Port Adelaide. This was a team who had the same number of wins as we did. Unfortunately we went down 4-1. The opposition pitcher did extremely well and threw a rare no hitter. Pat Burns started for us and continued his good form. Ben Packer came in to relieve him and also did very well. Sunday’s game against Henley and Grange becomes very import as a win secures a finals berth. Lets hope the bats heat up for the weekend. Come out and support our finals pursuit!!!

East Torrens 11 d Sturt 1
A disappointing end to a very good game of baseball. The final score 11-1 down after the score being 2-1 most of the day. In the field we were outstanding , Dale Martens having an amazing day at left field taking some great catches . Michael Burns pitched another great game but the conditions took a toll and Dale Martens pitched a much appreciated innings to help us out. As I said the field backed Burna up beautifully with an errorless game, this was not the problem it was the lack of hitting once again, this has been our problem all year. 4 safe hits a game isn't going to bring home the bacon too often. The exception was Ryan Mattschoss who went 2 for 3. We really need to win the next 2 game to give our season any sort of respectability. Thank you to the support on the sidelines it was good to see some faces there. Thanks boys for the effort its good to see that kind of go, sometimes the score doesn't reflect the way the game was played.

Division 4 (Coach: Stuart Crutchley)
Henley 12 d Sturt 2
Jet lag obviously has kicked in. After last weeks travel marathon the jet lag kicked in as a lethargic Sturt Div 4 faced competition leader Henley at West Lakes. They showed why they have only lost 1 game in the last 2 years and once again will be the measuring stick in this grade. But we have the stick out. We can match them on the field…no question. But we must come to the game with the right attitude and approach and stay with it the whole time. We can beat them and beat them we will!

Stan Warrilow toiled manfully on the mound all day and Simon Gooley continued his good form with the bat picking up 2 and a half hits for the day (he was out on the third but got called safe). Crutch looked good in the batters box all day while young cement hands Mark Colmer looked good at second. Normie looked pretty good at third too.

The score line didn’t really tell the tale. As I said, we can and will beat them. We need our best side playing as one and it will happen.

This week we come up against East Torrens twice in 5 days which should give us a morale boost leading into the final minor round game against arch rival Souths (my favourite game). Hopefully we secure enough wins to grab second and the double chance for the finals.
(Report from Mark Colmer)

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)
We played top of the table Playford City at home and unfortunately went down 13 - 1 after 90 minutes. We where not helped out by the umpire as there only seemed to be one side out there and he looked after them, of course that side was not us. We again struggled with the bats and again had the luck of picking out the fielders when we hit the ball while they picked the gaps. We had a great running catch by Junior at left field. Looking at the table we may still be able to slide into the fourth position on the table if teams above win and some lose but we also need to win.

Our last home game against Southern Districts on the 16th of February has been double booked by the SABL with the Division 3 side. The game has been moved to Southern Districts but I understand that the President Phil Robinson although disappointed about not being able to play his first ever game of baseball at home will suit up and travel to Southern Districts. I have assured him that we can take video for submission to the Funniest Home Videos to watch this spectacle!!!

East Torrens 18 d Sturt 0

The day started ok as I actually had a couple of reserves, but East Torrens were just too good for us their hits found gaps ours didn't. Tommy did his best on the mound as did Ken & TH. We play them again this week away so hopefully we put up a better showing.

Under 18 (Coach: Darren Stewart)
Team Sponsor: Renaissance Limousines

We came up against one of the better U18 pitchers in the state against Woodville. Ali pitched a fairly strong game and was very well backed up by Toby. Dan got two very good hits and Matty also got a very good hit through the right side. We ended up losing 6-0 but we played a very strong defensive game and never gave up in the batters box.

Under 16/1 Sturt (Coach: Jeff Nicholas)
Team Sponsor: Retravision Norwood

Sturt outplayed the highly fancied Woodville but went down 8-7 at Findon. We outhit Woodville 7-3 but gave up a few walks and an error late on the game to let the lead slip.

What it did prove is how well we can play when tested.

This Wednesday we have West Torrens away at 6.00 pm.

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Chris Small)
We played Goodwood at their home ground this week and went down in the end 11-8. We threw Adam Hofmeyer for the first time this season and he did a good job for 50 pitches unfortunately we made some errors in the field and some very poor base running did not help us. The boys continue to swing the bat and Jackson picked up two triples for the day. Ben Young took over from Adam and the game started to swing our way and we started to hold them on the scoring sheet while making some runs ourselves to get in front by one.

Jayke had a great play from centre field when he picked the ball up from one bounce and then threw a bullet to first to get the out, luckily for him otherwise he would have been my roast dinner. After getting back in front we panicked a bit when fielding and threw the ball around and wild allowing Goodwood to get back in front. Going into the last we needed 3 to tie or 4 to make them bat again but to Goodwood's credit they got three up three down to finish the game. We have three more games before finals with one being a twilight against second on the table West Torrens at home and we need to get back into the winners circle to retain top spot for those finals.

SAINTS v WEST TORRENS – 4-5
0-0, 1-1, 1-3, 1-3, 4-3 to 4-5 at the bottom of the 5th! With 5 minutes to go, we were back in the batting box but unfortunately could not manage any more runs & time & game was called. A very low scoring game across 5 ½ innings with moments of brilliance with our batting & fielding! Whilst we were getting bat to ball, we could not seem to get past WTs fielding & were either thrown out at 1st or caught. We had loaded bases a number of times but it was side away before we could bring any of them home. A good (2 base) hit by Brodie Blanks to LF, Tommy Matthewman to CF, a home run by Simon Evreniadis to the CF back fence, which brought 2 other runners home, for a 4-3 score at the top of the 5th. Simon had his head down & was doing 6 steps to the dozen as he rounded 3rd base with home plate in his sight. - & look out anyone who got in his way. A great catch by Brodie at RF & a throw to Sam Hollis on 1st for a double play. John Hood seemed to be getting his fair share of balls thru’ SS & after some very tentative throws, settled down & was instrumental in a number of outs at 1st. Considering that previous 2-12, 7-16 games against WT, the team played very well to keep them to the 4-5 result.

I am very pleased to report that the Sturt boys came ready to play after their disappointing display last week. We had a great training session on Thursday night and I would like to thank Zac Stokes and Tom Winter in giving their time to pass on some of their advice to the boys, it certainly seemed to have the desired effect!

The bats started working early in the game with 6 runs in the first innings before scoring 7, 0 and 6 in the last. As you can see we gathered some 16 very good safe hits compared to only 6 safe hits the previous week!

Harrison Wood pitched a great game allowing only 3 runners on base in his 3 innings of which 32 of his 46 pitches were strikes before being replaced by Justin Zak in the last innings who continued the good strike percentage with 12 strikes from 18 pitches.

Jordan Wayne continued his fine form with the bat with great support from Shaun McFarlane. Bradley Trembath continued his great form with the bat and has also gone a long way towards making the catching position his own freeing up Harrison and Matt Macbeth to pitch. All boys made good solid contact with the ball during the day and Billy "walked again" Burford collected his now customary 3 walks!

We need to continue doing the team and small things in the game i.e. supporting in the field and in the batting box and concentrating for 110 minutes every game as the next few weeks, particularly Wednesday night against Kensington are key to our progress.

Great way to bounce back boys, don't let up and remember everyone has a job to do every pitch of every game! GO STURT !!!!

Twilight Game- Wednesday
SAINTS 2 defeated by KENSINGTON 6

The scoreline doesn't look as though we played too badly but when the opposition scores 5 runs without hitting a ball out of the infield, you're in a spot of bother. Kensington had 1 outfield hit for the game so our defence was very disappointing. On the other hand we were never out of the game as we kept hitting the ball but didn't get too many breaks. To the boys credit, they kept fighting all game and kept trying to get ahead but we had shot ourselves in the foot by giving up 5 easy runs early. We now have a busy time ahead playing 5 games in 15 days so if we can win all 5 we will start our finals quest from 3rd position. The rest is now up to us from here so we need to stay focused and keep moving forward.

Sunday: SAINTS 9 defeated by SOUTHERN DISTRICTS 16
This game was on of those games where you would expect to win and win well if you applied yourself right from the word go and knowing that if you win your next 5 games against the bottom three sides, you will finish the minor round in 3rd spot. We as a team didn't apply ourselves and as a result we were beaten badly by the third to bottom side in the competion. Hopefully we will all have a good think about how we are applying ourselves and come out on Wednesday night against Henley & Grange firing right from the first pitch.

Please guys, don't spoil what has been a good season to date.

Under 14 Sturt Teal (Coach: Dean Franke)
Twilight 31/1/08 lost vs PA 13-4
Hits - Matt 2, Tyler 1, Henry 1, Lazar 1
Josh tried his little heart out on the mound, Henry battled well behind the mask and Matt took an exceptional backhanded catch at second base. Apart from a few scattered hits there were very little other highlights for the game and disappointment for the boys not playing up to their potential of prior to xmas.

3/2/08 lost vs Cardinals 9-8
Hits - Matt 2, Lazar 1, Jesse 1, Henry 1, Tyler 1, Rohan 1
Another heartbreaker for the boys after some soul searching before the game to lift our efforts.
To the lads credit after chasing the Cardinals all day we just fell short at the final hurdle.
Matt battled on the mound but was a little inaccurate at vital times and Josh tried hard behind the mask with Jesse relieving well late in the game.
But our inability to hold runners and then allow easy runs is a difficult pill to swallow.
Henry took 2 good catches in centrefield including 1 being an assisted double play when runners were going everywhere and we threw to every base and finally the right one in the end.
Matt continued with his multiple hits for a game and Jesse, Lazar and Henry hit some hard shots.
We kept ourselves in the game by keeping our heads up and concentrating in the batters box.
Unfortunately our slide down the table continues with 4 losses straight against the other top sides.
Look forward to the challenge which is Redsox next week.

Week 16 Results

I hope you all had a good Australia Day Weekend! Our Division 2 side had a great 4-3 win on Sunday against top side West Torrens! It was only the second loss for West Torrens this season so our Division 2 boys did us proud! Great effort boys! Our Division 1 Team also did well winning one of the two double header games that followed!

I was very sorry to hear that the Little League 2-Saints arrived at Goodwood on Sunday to play a 10 am game, after double checking the SABL Program website on Wednesday, only to find that the SABL had changed the time of the game to 12.30 pm sometime on Thursday or Friday and failed to notify our Club about this change! I have immediately taken this matter up with the SABL and I have received a written apology this afternoon from the League. They have determined that the game will be a 0-0 draw.

I appreciate how frustrating all these programming errors have been to junior parents throughout the season, and I can assure you that I have been in constant contact with the SABL General Manager Paul Begg over this matter. I have provided some advice to Paul on how these programming problems can be resolved by the use of a computer programme and Paul has responded extremely positively to my suggestions. I can assure members that I will continue to work with the SABL to ensure that the constant programming changes and problems we have experienced this season are rectified by next season!

Facing West Torrens in a double header is always a daunting task but the group felt we were a big chance to win both of these games. Game 1 didnt begin the way we would have liked, giving up 5 runs in the first inning. To the boys credit they hung in there and finished the game 6-1 down but were unlucky offensively. TJ and Paul Mildren did a fantastic job on the mound but got no run support.

Hits - Adkins, Lee, Knuckey, Stokes, Roeger, Holmes.

Game 2 saw the bats finally come alive as most of the lineup picked up hits. Pat Burns and Telmo pitched well for us and the team backed them up well in the field. Sturt led for most of the game and ran out deserving 10-6 winners.

Hits - Hajtmar 3, Holmes 3, Lee 2, Roeger 2, Turner 2, Stanton, Stokes,

Facing top of the table West Torrens, this was always going to be a tough task. Ben Packer led the way for the Saints on the mound and was well relieved by Daniel Turner. In what was a close game all day, the Saints won a memorable game 4-3. Well done boys. Make sure we stay at that level for the rest of the season.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
Team Sponsor: Premier Trailers

Another close game against one of the leaders in div 3 , going down to Glenelg 10-8 in the last after being up by 1 before the start of the last. Again we had our chances had the ball gone 1 foot left or right a couple of times the result would have been much different.

A great job at left field in his 1st div3 game by Dave Nicholas who got a hit and took 3 good catches. Dakota Mitchell played his 1st full senior game also came up with 2 solid catches at right field. Will Frogley again played another outstanding game at short stop , he has really been the big difference in div3 this year, he also collected 3 walks with good discipline in the box.

Toby Cantrill also collected his weekly hit with 3 walks, Toby is becoming a very consistent hitter. Ryan Mattschoss went 2-4 with a walk. Sam Bates went 2-3 with a walk and is having a great last half of the season. Jackson B-Russ had an outstanding day behind the dish again and also collected a hit and a walk. Our most outstanding player today was Michael Burns who went 2-4 with a walk and pitched an outstanding game. Burna threw 7 digs gave up the 1 walk. Michael threw 118 pitches in his 7 digs, he kept them hitless for 4 innings and gave up 1 hit in another .

We keep showing that we can match it with these top sides , we just need a little something to push us over. It was a pleasure to go into battle with these 8 players this week.

Division 4 (Coach: Stuart Crutchley)
Finally the Division 4 team has returned from their away game at Gawler. Norm had trouble at the border because he didn’t have his visa and Ian Evans’ passport was out of date. Anyway we are all back now safe and sound with only a touch of jet lag.

The game was a good one for the boys to start gelling as a team again. After crossing 2 time zones Norm Sluga got us off to a good start with a towering home run into the wind in the second which woke up our bats as we started to pile on the pressure to the inexperienced Gawler lineup. Ian Evans joined the party with an even bigger round tripper and the lead blew out to 7 nil.

Try as we did we couldn't get the required runs to mercy them in reduced time but we were able to pile on the runs in the last to run out easy winners 19 to 3.

Everyone batted well with most picking up a couple of hits and the base running, well it was a delight to watch with Simon Gooley picked up his first stolen base this century.

Only a short trip this week to the holiday playground at West Lakes when we take on competition leaders Henley.

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)
It was a long drive out there to play GGCD and it was a longer drive back after the 15-5 loss. We made too many errors in the field and not enough positives with the bat. Don Wulff again started off the runs well with a home run over left field scoring himself and Mark "Pop" Burns who had a lovely hard hit safe pass the pitcher and over second base. Don Wulff had two home runs for the day.

Rick "The Rat" Trembath started on the mound and every ball they hit found a hole or we made a fielding error where as for us every ball we hit went straight to them. No use complaining as a coach you can only work with what you have got and yes unfortunately that goes for me as well, currently could not hit the ball if it is the size of a watermelon!

Don Wulff finished off on the mound for us. We missed some of our big hitters for the day and hopefully they will be back with us as we take on top of the table Playford City at home this weekend. On a lighter moment Dean "Zulu" Franke now has some shorter eyebrows thanks to his BBQ and Glenn "Doc" Young is working a week in front of us as he turned up at next week's game a week early for the under 16's game... yet another one of his brain fades!

Disappointing 10-1 loss. Ali performed admirably on the mound backed up in relief by Michael. Our bats just never got going though. Thanks to Jarred and Ben for filling in.

Tuesday
We played Kensington for the second consecutive twilight. We never really got going however and lost 9-3. Dan did a decent job on the mound and was again backed up by Michael in relief. Again we didn't get enough hits. Thanks to Tom Winter and Zac Stokes for filling in for Darren as our coaches for the night.

We had to play Woodville at Henley & Grange after the SABL moved us from Seaton during the week, and with Woodville sitting second on the table a couple of games behind us it was going to be a tough game for us. This was our first game back after the break after our bye and to the boys credit they came out with their game face on winning in the end 14-6.

A couple of times we had some of the boys not using their heads but the best thing about that was they all were having fun. Good to see all the boys enjoying their baseball at present and doing what they need to do to win games. Thanks must go out to Sam Hollis for filling in for us this week as we only had eight after Wednesday night training while the other under 16 div 2 team had 11, unfortunately the other team may have been short due to some late notification and one falling sick on the morning of the game. Jai and Jackson did the job on the mound again for us and Jarrad was behind the dish all day.

The boys still need to talk up a bit more while playing the game and support each other while batting and when they do talk they are a hard side to beat. They came back from the break swinging the bat as they had finished off the first half of the season and all picked up safe hits or walks through the game allowing us to score nine runs in an innings. Keep up the hard work boys and enjoy your baseball as you have been.

Unfortunately the boys got off to their now customary slow start and had only 4 runs on the board after the first 2 innings and then followed up with 3 and 2 in the remaining innings to secure a comfortable but frustrating victory against a solid side in East Torrens. As you can see we only gathered 6 safe hits against boys just throwing good solid strikes, so practice will be about hitting this week!

Dakota Mitchell pitched most of the game and did a good job (although his strike percentage was down early) before being replaced by Justin Zak in the last innings.

It is very hard to get excited about too much in the game except for a great hitting performance from Bradley Trembath, who is listening and putting into practice the changes we are making to his swing. His 2 stand up doubles were both great hits!

As discussed with the boys after the game the next few weeks in the run to the finals are about doing the team and some of the small things in the game i.e. supporting in the field and in the batting box and concentrating for 110 minutes every game.

I certainly believe we have the talent to go the whole way with this team but the boys need to be switched on and determined from the minute they arrive at the ground, not just half way through the game.

SAINTS 8 defeated ADELAIDE 7

After a very ordinary start to the game, we finally got it all together to come up with a last inning come from behind win. Sam Roberts started on the mound and was replaced by Harrison Lightbody who came in and threw very well to pick up the win for the team. I'm sure the boys learnt a few things in the field over the course of the game which hopefully they will learn from and become better players.

Sam Myers had a good game at centre field with his backing up of plays and his constant chatter all game, he also picked up 2 walks, ran the bases well and also put our winning runs in scoring position in the final innings.

Tim Kimber also had a good game with the bat picking up 2 good hits to centre field. Jack Colmer also pick up a hit and was backing up from the outfield every play and Joel Grantham and Dylan Holt also came up with a couple of hits between them to keep the score board ticking. Most of the players are now starting to be involved in each play even if the ball doesn't come to them which is good to see, we are starting to think about our baseball.

Well done boys and we must keep up the hard work to keep on the winners list.

Top of the table clash !

Hits - Tyler 2 incl home run, Matt 2, Spiro 1

After a see sawing game and a 1 run lead , Cardinals beat us in the last with a 3 run home run.
Our battery struggled in the second innings which ended up determining the result.
Jesse relieved well on the mound when required and Tyler made a good play from 3rd.
A few costly mistakes saw us give away a few runs as did inaccuracy in the battery (something to work on).
Once again missed signals that would have made the difference on the scoreboard but good bunts laid down by Josh and Lazar.
Tyler cleared the fence with a home run and Matt batted strongly for 2 hits.
A good game by the closeness of the scorecard and we were just pipped on the post as all tried hard.
Tough twilight to come against Port and we need to get back on the winners stand to have some confidence in the finals.

Sturt 19 - Adelaide 3.

3 runs in the first innings with two out was the start we needed, Sam C first pitch for the year did a great job also picking up three hits with his bat. Today we used 4 pitchers and all doing a great job. Darcy had a great day pitching one inning and only using 14 pitches also involved with a double play taking a line drive at second and then throwing the runner out at first. Max G also played well with three hits and also making a double play at first to finish of the game. West Torrens next week , lets go sturt.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulf)
Our second mid week game in a row at Southern Districts ended with a better result this time, Sturt winning 15-8.

Chris Wulff, Brodie MacBeth, and William Hill each scored 3 runs with Brodie and Braydon Richardson each having 2 solid hits. One of Brodie's hits was a grand slam home run! On the defensive end, Jack Murphy made a couple of good stops on hard hits to center field and again, Hayden Emery did a fine job pitching.

Only 3 games left now before we get to the finals!

Week 15 Results

Welcome back to our Juniors who played their first games since the Christmas break. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our Junior Teams every success for the second half of the season. I would also like to remind all of our players, parents, coaching staff etc that we have a Code of Conduct which is important for everyone to read. I have had a number of our coaches remind me to bring this important information to everyone's attention.

Our Division 3-6 teams have had a break over the weekend due to the Claxton Shield being played in Adelaide on Saturday.
During the week we also had a number of twilight games for juniors. Our Division 1 and 2 Teams played on Sunday and it was great to see the Division 1 side come out with a win and the Division 2 side fight back to end up drawing their match!

Congratulations to our Under 16 State boys who ended up finishing second after playing off in the Grand Final! I understand our representative Sam Day played very well throughout the tournament. Congratulations Sam! Information on the tournament is available on the Redlands Baseball Club website.

Due to unforseen circumstances the Australia Day Party scheduled for Saturday 26 January 2008 has been cancelled. The Senior Committee apologises for any inconvenience this cancellation causes.

One of our past player Noel Gully has advised that the Inaugural Meeting of the Claxton Shield Club is to be held at Goodwood Baseball Clubrooms, Mortlock Park on Monday 18th February 2008, 7.00 for 7.30 pm.
Former players who are interested in becoming members are invited to attend and discuss the foundation of such a club and renew old friendships. RSVP by 14th February 2008 to Noel Gully on 83226186

During the season break of Jan 7-10 the Under 14 South Australian BEES (development squad) were host to an international team from Tokyo playing a 4 game series.
Although SA were unable to win a game, (results were losses from between 1 and 4 runs in each game), the games were played in great spirit and each player received a huge learning curve in what skills are required to take the next step in their baseball careers. Sturt was well represented by Sam Roberts, Harrison Lightbody, Josh Tindall and Matthew Franke and supported by David Lightbody (Manager) and Dean Franke (Pitching Coach).
All players represented their club with fine performances and their behaviour and learning capacity was a credit to them.
As well, the Adelaide Southern All-Stars - Little League Team played a game against Tokyo, although not so successful, Sturt was ably represented by James Snelgrove, Ryan Cross, Brett Colmer, Tyler Lunnon and Mark Snelgrove (Manager).
With this number of junior players involved in representative sides, gaining additional development and coaching, the future for the club can only strengthen.
Also , thanks to the club for the use of the ground for a 3 game day on the Tuesday and special thanks to Trudy Lightbody, Jenni Franke, Glenys Snelgrove and Kerryn Colmer for their efforts in the canteen.

Needed to get back into the winners column, the boys were pumped up for a winnable game against Goodwood. We sent TJ Stanton to the mound to get us off to a good start but Goodwood came out and hit well to post 3 runs in the first. Clutch hits to Daniel Turner, Dane Adkins and Zac Stokes allowed the Saints to go ahead 6-3 after 5 innings which is where the game stayed.

This was a fantastic team effort and something this group should take some real positive momentum from.

After falling behind 8-1 early in the game, the Saints rallied well to tie the game 11 all. Tom Winter pitched very well in relief and Zac Stokes picked up a massive hit in the last innings to score the tying run. However the hitting from this group was below par and they will need this to improve dramatically over the next few weeks to keep there finals hopes alive.

Twilight
Sturt took a tough trip to Kensington during the week. Althought we didn't come out with the result we wanted we played some very encouraging baseball. We went into the final innings 3-0 up, but to Kensignton's credit they really stood up in the hitting department and stole the game from us. Ali Young was great on the mound and came up with a nice double to top off a good night for him.

Sunday
After our solid twlight game we looked to capitilize against Goodwood on the weekend. We really struggled to get the bats going on the day and really should have scored a lot more runs which would have taken the pressure off our pitchers and fielding. We ended up with a 9-5 loss. Toby Cantrill did a solid job on the mound and was backed up by Michael Robinson. Beau Pelgrim did some really good team things with the bat laying down two solid bunts and Tom Kenny was solid at 2nd base taking a very good catch at full stretch. We must start winning games now instead of just putting in good performances if we want to be competitive late in the year.

Chris Small filled in as coach for Richard this week while he is away on holidays and for the first game back after the break this team came out with all guns firing. Ben Papps started on the mound and held them for 4 innings with out them scoring a run, Sam Hollis came in for the last and they again scored nothing the final score was 15-0.

William was behind the plate all day and when they had a runner in scoring positions he made sure if the ball got away from him they did not score. The bats where hot and base running was fantastic. Paige set the tone in the field early in the game after wearing a ball on the shin she did not panic, she recovered the ball and threw the out. It was nice to see a great crowd for this team and for me most of all it was great to see all the kids smiling and hearing them laugh. This showed in the way they played the game as a group. Talk was a little bit down in the field and in the dug out while batting but when someone did the job required of them all players let them now about it. Simon, Sam and Shaun all hit the ball hard and Granny picked up two hits for the day only problem was that they were to the body, I think all got a safe hit for the day and if they play like they did on the weekend for the rest of the season then they should see some finals. They need to stay focused and do the little things for the rest of the season to keep winning and most of all have fun.

After a slow start and only 4 runs on the board after the first 2 innings the boys rallied well to score 2 , 6 and 5 runs in the remaining innings to secure a comfortable mercy rule win against Henley and Grange. Matthew Macbeth pitched most of the game and did a great job before being replaced by Jordan Wayne while Bradley Trembath did a fantastic job behind the catchers mask! Again a lot of the boys played in positions foreign to them so it was a good win after the long break with everyone getting an opportunity to play somewhere different. . While we certainly didn't play to our full ability there were some very promising signs and hopefully it was a sign of things to come over the next few weeks. It was a difficult game to be too aggressive with our base running due to the rather one sided nature of the game but we stayed focused and supportive throughout the game. Happy New Year to all and I wish all teams well in the run up to finals !

SAINTS 10 defeated EAST TORRENS 9
A good team effort and a bit of hard work got us over the line in the end.
Dylan Holt did a great job on the mound once again, only to cop a ball on the nose from his catcher. This whack on the nose not only drew blood but it also spurred him on, great job Dylan. We made some good plays in the field and our pick offs to second definately saved us some runs.
Our hitting was very pleasing to watch as the boys kept hitting all game, scoring runs in every innings. It wasn't just the safe hits that was good to watch , but the advancing of runners and the sacrifice flys to bring them in.
Well done boys and I must say it was a good game to be involved in.
Keep up the good work.

A disappointing day and result where we had the bare 9 players (2 being 1st year players).
2 more experienced players still not heard of or seen from xmas, hello, where are you ? would appreciate some correspondence if you still want to play ! and 1 player not available.
We jumped out of the blocks to score 3 in the first innings and things were looking good while we held them out as Matt had the first 3 outs at first.
Jesse started the game and did well although he was a little rusty after the long break and limited training due to some blisters which allowed Port some runners on base, Matt came in to relieve and when the opposition hit the ball and put us under some pressure our skills just werent up to it, way too many basic errors and lack of thought of where to throw the ball from the outfield.
We also weren't smart enough on bases.
The above I think due to a lack of numbers at training where we are unable to train as a team.
We were headed, mid game, then hit back with some good bunched hits but were unable to put bat to ball as we attempted and missed numerous bunts and signals to score more runs.
Ahead at the top of the last innings but lost it in the bottom as the opposition applied more pressure to win by 1 run.
On the positive side, Josh caught and batted well, Lazar and Matt batted well, while Tyler and Jesse had their moments.
Much work to be done and some tougher games follow.

We went into this game with no practice under our belts, only learning of this game two days prior. Never the less, the boys came out keen to play only to have Southern Districts edge us out 11-10 in cold, windy conditions at their ground.
Our boys hit the ball ok but seemed to pick out the fielders, who made some good plays. We had no one with more than 1 hit but a highlight was William Hill's home run!
Thanks to Jordan McArdle and Henry Brennan for filling in. Both had a great hit for us.

Sun 20 Jan

This was a morning game at Goodwood as we played, for the first time, the Indians. The Indians struggled to find numbers and ended up with only 8 players.
8 players was not enough to stop our boys as they ended up on the winning side of a 15-0 scoreline. It was disappointing for Indians players and supporters but it was a real pleasure to watch our lads as they hit and hit and hit!! We had 10 hits for the game, including home runs to Chris Wulff and Tyson Ottoway. Jack Murphy smashed a 2 base hit and Braydon Richardson a great 3 base hit. A defensive highlight was when our catcher, William, raced after a pitch that had gone past him, picked it up, and charged in to tag the oncoming runner from 3rd - out!
We had Hayden Emery back for this game and his pitching was just as good as it was before the break. Henry Wood finished off what was a very enjoyable game for our guys.

Twilight-Saints vs. Blues

The Saints were treated to a surprise re-match against the Blues when Baseball SA made a schedule change and added this game with short notice. So without a full practice, the boys took on a strong Blues squad in a mid-week game. The summer break didn’t diminish our skills at the plate by much with a great 14 run total in the first three innings. Unfortunately, the Blues were just a bit stronger and brought out an ace to shut down the Saints in the final inning… a heartbreaker 17-14 loss for the Saints.

Sunday, Jan 20, Saints vs. Goodwood

On Sunday morning, we hosted a Goodwood team that we hadn’t played since the start of the season. Looking to avenge that early loss, the Saints lead the game 4-2 after the first three innings, with two great outfield catches by Jack Bolingbroke helping to lead the way. But a great 4 run effort by Goodwood in the top of the 4th included a two run home run! Our boys fought back but left the tying run on third base in another heartbreaking loss.

Week 14 Results

This week has again seen a number of twilight games being played. Unfortunately our Division 1 side lost to Golden Grove in the twilight game on Tuesday night, but we had a great win on Wednesday night with the Division 5 team. Over the weekend our Division 2 team had a bye which meant that a number of our Division 2 players had a hit out in Division 3. Unfortunately our Division 1 side lost both their games on Sunday to seventh placed Kensington. This leaves our Division 1 side in ninth position, one and a half games ahead of Golden Grove.

Our Under 18 side starts the second half of the Season with a twilight game on Wednesday night at Kensington. Also please note that Little League Minor Games have also been scheduled at late notice for this night also! Please visit our website for the details.

Claxton Shield will be played at Woodville Baseball Club, South Australia v Western Australia, this coming Friday and Saturday and as result no Division 3- 6 games will be played next Saturday.

On Sunday our Junior teams recommence and our Division 1 and 2 teams will be playing at home

I have also had the opportunity to review the Game Schedule for the remainder of the season. As you would be aware there have been numerous programming changes by the SABL and it has been very hard to keep up with all of them on our own website. I would ask you to check both the SABL game site and our own. If you notice any inconsistencies, can you please email me. Numerous problems have already been identified with the currently revised programme which David Lightbody is taking up with the SABL.

Also for parents with players 13 years and younger remember the Training with the Pros session to be held this coming Thursday at Woodville Baseball Club More information is avaialble under our upcoming events section.

The Under 16 State Championships have also encountered weather problems with the first two days be relocated from Redlands to Ipswich! You can check the latest results and updates by going to the Redlands Baseball Club website. As at 13 January South Australia has won one game and lost two.

The Under 18 State Championships in Perth have now concluded with South Australia finishing fifth. NSW won the series. Results and all the statistics are available at the Baseball WA website.

Sturt faced a tough Golden Grove lineup with the two import pitchers facing off. TJ threw a solid game and defensively we were excellent only giving up 4 runs however our batting was below par. We only managed to score 2 runs as too many players did not contribute offensively at all. We lacked spirit and application during the game which has been unusual for this side this season.

I am confident this group will show their true character in a very important double header this weekend against Kensington.
Hits - Brice 2 (HR), Passmore, Adkins, Stokes, Turner

Sunday Double Header
The Saints came up against Kensington for a Double header that was a must win for us to hang on to the hope of playing finals baseball. Unfortunately it all unravelled with some lack lustre defense and non existent offense. We lost the first game 6-0 and the second 11-1.

Not one player played to their own expectations and with so much to play for, it was a bitterly disappointing day.

But, as always there is next week and we need to regroup and put our best foot forward.

We played Goodwood this week who are sitting 2nd on the ladder. Although a great effort by the boys we lost 10 -7.Again we have shown we can mix it with the better teams. A huge thanx to Tom Faehse who came down and played and went 4 for 5 leading off and a solid job at 3rd. Dale Martens also had a day with the bat going 3 for 4. Michael Burns had a more than outstanding day at left field taking one of the most amazing catches I have ever witnessed, he also collected a double with the bat. Ally Young caught a great game he also collected 2 safe hits. Sam Bates looks like he has found his form again with the bat going 2 for 4. Toby Cantrill also hit the ball well getting 2 safe hits. Will Frogley keeps his hitting streak going making it 14 games in a row without missing out. With each team getting 7 earned runs each it shows we should be playing playing finals this year, we need to play with the same intensity against the lower sides as we do the sides higher on the ladder, it was good to see base runners converted into runs good job boys.
The umpiring deserves no comment.

Twilight Game: Wednesday 9 January 2008
We played Flinders for the first time this season and they where only half a game behind us. We walked away with the win 11-8 but it was a lot closer than it should have been, the umpire was a little bit woeful with some of his calls. We had the third out on first when we were 11-4 up but the ump called the runner safe and they went on to score 4 more runs, with one bat to come for both teams.

In the last at bat we had three up and down and needed to keep them score less in the bottom of the innings and with Glenn Young coming in to pitch for his first game and first time it was not going to be easy but "THE ENFORCER" came through and with first and second runners on we made the three outs to win the game. Alistair Young again filled in for us and started on the mound he could have thrown the full game if not for the ump and some terrible throws from the Small's on the left hand side of the infield.

Zulu had a fantastic slide a home plate while the ball was still in the out field and told us his legs buckled under the weight, luckily he had taken his pain killers and he did not feel a thing. Glenn started of as catcher and after a phone call he had a brain fade and threw off his glove instead of his helmet with a foul fly ball, he and Alistair got under the ball and all was looking good for Glenn to take the catch until he realized he had no glove on, and as the ball hit the ground he calmly said to his son "Alistair your ball" helmet still on.

Junior was at centre field and with a fly ball that bounced in front of him and a runner going to second he was 20 metres away and through a lovely hard bouncer that Shaun Tait would be proud of, it kept low and if not for the fantastic glove work of Mark "pop" Burns the runner would have been safe. David Lightbody played his first game of the season as well and took a great catch at left field on the fence to stop Flinders from getting a bit of a roll on early in the game. David Nicholas also played his first senior game for Sturt though it was only for a couple of innings and one at bat. We need to keep winning these sort of games to play finals and with another game this weekend against Northern Districts at their home ground we need to keep our team spirit and tempo up. Saturday Game
We traveled to Northern Districts this weekend after playing them at home last weekend and with players still away with the state kids numbers where tight, our supporting group also dropped off this week most not making the long journey north. Zulu pulled out with a sore arm from the twilight game at the last minute and we were down to 7 with half hour before we left for the game and the long drive.

A few quick phone calls and going deep into the playing groups kids we ended up with 10 players making the trip. Thanks to Jarrad Small and Ben Young for filling in this week and having a great half game each. We walk away with the win from this game 12-5 with Don Wulff throwing the entire game for the win.

All batted well and if not for the umpire the score for us would have been more after Pop was given out at home plate, he slid in and had a cup of tea, signed some autographs and the catcher then tagged him for the out and side away, we still had two runners on bases. Trent Small again filled in and had a hit in the innings that counted for us were we scored 8 runs as did Jarrad who hit to third and with a wild throw to first Jarrad ended up on third scoring two runners.

Ben Young hit the ball hard and ran the bases well with a lovely hit to centre field. This was their first seniors game for the club for both boys and they looked like they enjoyed themselves. Don Wulff also hit two home runs for the day unfortunately he was first up at bat each time and we had no runners on. We have now had three wins from three games for the second half of the season but we have some tuff games coming up playing top of the table Playford City twice before the finals, but if we can keep winning we should see some of the playoffs. We have this week off with the Claxton Shield so rest up those tired bodies and be ready for the run home.

Sturt 9 drew Woodville 9

With Trev on the mound we started well scoring 4 in the first dig & with some good pitching & good catches by Adam @ left field we were holding them but then we fell in a hole about the 4th inning & made a few errors which cost us 5 runs we went to the bottom of the last 9-8 down we got the tying run but with bases loaded & 1 out we just couldn't get the winning run in, this was one of those games that we actually gave to the opposition rather than them taking it. Hopefully the lads will do better against Norths in the next game.

Week 13 Results

Welcome to the 2008 start of the Baseball season! Whilst the Juniors are having a short break, there is plenty happening on the baseball scene with a number of our players having state commitments.

Firstly I would like to acknowledge our Under 14 state boys who have had their tournament cancelled in Lismore due to the flooding. I can imagine the huge disappointment for both our large contingent of players and their families who made the trip up to Lismore. We are thinking of you!

On a brighter note it was great to see that Tom Brice won the Fielder's Choice Player of the Round for his week one performance in the Claxton Shield. Well done Tom!

In West Australia South Australia has won one of the three games played. You can see full match reports on these three games at Baseball SA. A re-match will occur here in South Australia on 18/19 January 2008 at Woodville.

For those wanting to follow our Under 18 State Team you can log on to the WA Baseball Website, where they have a live link to the game which means you can watch the plays and scores being updated in real time!

The Under 16 National Championships are due to start on Thursday 10 January at the Redlands Baseball Club in Queensland. You can download the program from their website and all scores etc will be located on this site.

Closer to home our Division 1 and 2 sides faced Glenelg who is top of the ladder in both Divisions. Although both our teams lost I think losing to the top team with a tight scoreline speaks volumes for both of these teams!

Our Division 1 team has a home twilight game on Tuesday night at 6.00 pm against Golden Grove so if you are not on holidays somewhere else please make every effort to get down to the Club to offer your support!!

Fees

I also need to remind all of our senior players and junior players and their parents of the extreme importance of paying your subscription fees. The majority of our players have already paid their fees, however there remains a number of senior and junior players who have yet to pay their fees. The Club works on volunteers and for those who have not paid their fees, this results in addition work from your fellow members who have to chase these fees. If you haven't yet paid your fees, please make every effort to do so before we actually make contact with you! You can pay online or see Dave behind the bar to make your payment, where we have available EFTPOS facilities. If you are not sure of the fee to pay you can check online

Glenelg 4 d Sturt 0
After a two week break, we faced up to top of the table Glenelg. In what was always going to be a game where we needed to take our chances and make our own luck, we simply got none. The boys hit the ball well but couldnt find gaps but to there credit, competed well to the end. Paul Holmes was unlucky not to have picked up three hits with some fantastic batting but was luckless.
Defensively we were brilliant. Dane Adkins and Dan Martens really controlled the middle infield well and made some big plays. We welcomed back Shane Horne to pitching duties in the A grade after some time in the B grade and he really took his opportunity throwing 4.1 innings for only 1 run. Telmo and Tom Winter also pitched well.
The final scoreline was a loss 4-0 but some fantastic signs for the second half of the season.

Hits - Brice, Stokes, Winter, Adkins, Passmore

Glenelg 4 d Sturt 2
The B Grade lined up against Glenelg who had only lost 1 game so far. In what was a high quality match, Rick Mitchell and Ben Packer pitched superb baseball, only giving up 4 runs through 8 innings of work. However, offensively the boys pitch selection was pretty ordinary and could only manage 2 runs. Final score a loss 4-2.

Division 4 (Coach: Stuart Crutchley)
Northern Districts 7 d Sturt 2

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)
Sturt 21 d Northern Districts 6
On a hot day at home we turned up to play and with only half an hour before game time there was one from the opposition at the game. Northern Districts scrapped up the nine they need to start the game in the end but right on start time. We walked away with a comfortable win in the end 21 - 6 with some good hard hitting and some great fielding. We only made a few errors this week in the field which was good to see after the break. Everyone had a safe hit for the day and some celebrated a hit a little early as they where caught out at centre field but Glenn was happy to have a hit with his Christmas Present.
Reg (David Lee) batted left handed and went 4 from 5 to make up for all his errors at first base. Zulu pitch well and Snorky came in to finish of the game, Junior is still not back to his best with the bat as yet, maybe he has been away too long on holidays. Thanks to Lorrie (aka Tim Zak) for the day for filling in, he hit the ball hard and ran fast which is something we try not to do in Div 5 (run hard).
A lot of the usual players were away this week with their kids playing in the under 14 state team so we had the usual Trent fill in for us and we had Lorrie and Alistair Young also fill in. Alistair had a good game with both the bat and field only to be let down by Reg at first.
Snorky made some great stops and plays at short stop before taking the mound. We play Flinders this week in a twilight at Flinders and this is fast becoming a must win game for us if we are looking at playing some finals baseball and with most still away with the state boys we will need to go in with all guns firing and hopefully come away with the win.

Division 6 (Coach: Richard Carter)

Well it didn't look that good just before the game due to only having 7 players but H&G loaned us 1 which they may now regret as we played like demons with Tom Pledge on the mound & Ken Denby diving all over the place at short stop we went on to win the game 11-8, I think we were all done by the end of the game. So i take my hat off to the other six players.
