Twilight and Saturday Results

I write to you with the twilight results from games played over the last week and for the teams that played on Saturday. We finished off the Division 1 half of the season with two great wins! I know the win against North last night was soured by the injury to Dane Atkins who had to be taken to hospital. I understand that his injuries are not as bad as first thought. Our best wishes are extended to him for a speedy recovery!

Once again to all members of the Club have a great Christmas and all the best for the New Year! There will be a short break with Senior games recommencing on Saturday 5 January 2007. Check out our website for times of games.

To our state players we hope you have great success!!

Twilight Game
We faced West Torrens for the first time this season in a must win game if we are to consider ourselves any chance of playing finals. TJ held us together well defensively and we made some great plays in the field to restrict West Torrens scoring. Daniel Lee was on fire, picking up 3 crucial hits in what would be best described as the best game of his career to date. This game really proved he can cut it at this higher level already.

Zac Stokes was very good for us, picking up two crucial hits scoring RBIs. He has shown excellent leadership this season which has helped the group immensely.

We finished off by beating last years premiers 8-5 in an excellent team effort. Well done boys.

Hits - Lee 3,Turner 2, Stokes 2, Brice, Adkins, Passmore, Burns, Roeger

Saturday Game
We travelled out to Norths to play a game we now fully expect ourselves to win. Telmo started well with the pitching duties and the boys got the bats going after an indifferent start to stretch our lead to 7-0 after 4 innings. Unfortunately we let Norths back in the game, giving up 5 runs in the 5th inning. Ben Packer took over on the hill and did an excellent job through to the 9th and we led the game 11-5 with the bottom of the ninth to deal with. Once again, we couldn't close the game out as well as we should and unfortunately Norths scored another 5 to see the Saints fall over the line 11-10 winners.

The first half of the season has left ourselves in contention to have a run at the finals. The boys have put in a lot of hard work and they have been rewarded with some excellent results. There is still much more hard work to do however if we want to make the final 6.

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)
Major Sponsors: Hyde Park Hotel, Ord Minnett & Loan SA

It was a very easy win for the Saints over Norths 11-1 as the mercy rule ended North's pain. Shane Horne had one of his best outings for the year and Ali Young picked up 3 hits to show everyone that he is a future Division 1 player. Everyone contributed for the day, particularly Adam Kerr who picked up a couple of nice hits for the day.

Well done to the Division 2 team as they are now a couple of games clear in the Top 6. They have a lot to play for in the New Year to make sure they stay there and play finals baseball for the first time in a long time.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)

8-2 loss after 8 digs to the third side, on their postage stamp, with a gale blowing to the left field fence @ Kensington is not to bad.We played a great defensive game 1 error for the day Pete Turner back in the 3s had a solid game @ 3rd with a couple of good plays and also came up with a hit.Mat Whitford did an outstanding job in centre field. Dutchy Holland had a day out @ right on base 1.000 2 walks and a safe hit.
Jackson B-R had another good day behind the dish also getting his weekly hit.
Will Frogley hit the ball with some real power unlucky to only walk away with the 1 hit.
Toby Cantrill & Michael Robinson collected a hit each.
The most disapointing thing that come out of the game was our unability to move runners around , too many times we had runners at 1st & 2nd with 1 out and not be able score, 11 strike outs to pitchers that did not deserve to be made to look that good. In total we reached base 15 times for the grand tally of 2 runs , not enough team batting I think.
To everyone that has played 3s this year we have shown the signs that we are a better side than 3 - 9 , we just need to put it together all the time and then we WILL be playing finals baseball.
To all at the Sturt Baseball Club have a Merry X-Mas and a Happy New Year.
Division 4 (Coach: Stuart Crutchley)
Sturt 10 d Goodwood 1

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)
We played Goodwood at home for the last game of the season and had a fantastic crowd come out and watch, unfortunately we went down 15-4. Goodwood started of well scoring 3 and we got back even but that was it for us and Goodwood's bat lit up. Rick Trembath held them for the first two innings and then they started to hit him so in came Garry Wood and I am sure he had his whole street out to watch as he got a great cheer from the crowd when he was on the mound. We had too many errors in the field which did not help us but we did enjoy the drinks and food after the game. Rest the old bodies up boys as we make our run for the finals we only need to finish in the top four to play finals and then anything can happen.

To all have a very Merry Christmas and a Safe New Year see you all back on the park in 2008 our first game is on the 5 January.

After another slow start and only 2 runs in both the first and second innings the boys rallied well in the third to score 7 before scoring 5 in the 4th to secure a comfortable mercy rule win against one of the lower teams.

Most of the State boys were very tired after playing 4 continuos days of baseball in the Goodwill series but all managed to contribute to the result.

Bradley Trembath had his first pitch of the season and did a great job before being replaced by Justin Zak who closed the game out while Jared Lo Basso caught his first game of the season and did a fantastic job! Most of the other boys played in positions foreign to them so it was a good way to reach the long break with everyone getting an opportunity to play somewhere different.

As was the situation on the weekend, a lot of balls were thrown by the opposition and several batters had multiple walks including Billy Burford who went 3 walks from 3 at bats as he did on the weekend! Well done mate. I don't know of too many players who have had six walks from their last six at bats ??!!

It was a difficult game to be too aggressive with our base running due to the lack of strength of the opposition but we did still stay focused and supportive throughout the game.

Lots of positives again out of this game and the first half of the season so well done to all the boys and I look forward to seeing how well we can finish the season off?

Good luck to all the State boys and a very Merry Xmas and Happy New year to all involved with our great club! Go the SAINTS !!!!!

SAINTS 14 def GOLDEN GROVE DODGERS 6

The first half of the season is now complete with us currently sitting in 5th position, just behind East Torrens.

Wednesday nights game saw us take on Golden Grove and once again we came out firing scoring 6 runs in the first dig with James "Shnibly' Snelgrove hitting a long bomb to center field and then have Dylan Holt step out onto the mound and shut the Dodgers down. We went on to score in every innings which was pleasing but we still don't seem to be extending ourselves for the whole game. This is definitely something we have to work on in the New Year.

We made some good plays in the field with Tim Kimber taking a diving catch and there was a good buzz in the field for most of the game.

It was a good way to finish off the first half of the season and I'm looking forward to an even better second half with the opportunity to play finals baseball.

Merry Christmas to All and a Happy New Year.

Massive win by the team who all hit the ball and our base running was excellent. We have improved over this season in all areas of the game. Well Pitched by Henry Bennan and Tyler Lunnon , some great fielding by all but special mention to Jayden Trembath who has had three awesome games over the past few weeks. Thanks to Zac Lunnon for helping out also contributing with a put out from second to top it off.

I have enjoyed the first half of the year and look forward to the second half. Keep up the good work guys and have a merry Christmas. See you all in the new year.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulf)
In another mid week game and our last until 20 January the boys came out firing to beat Southern Districts at Flinders. There were a few standouts, including Brodie MacBeth with great hitting, including his second home run for the season, Jack Murphy with a triple, and Braydon Richardson with a good catch in right field wearing his new glasses. There were other highlights, as there's been in each game this season, but the main thing is the kids are improving while having some fun along the way.

Thank you to all of the parents who pitched in yesterday to make light work of everything to be done. Thank you, too, to Gary Wood for umpiring.

Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy New Year to everyone. See you all next year!

Saints vs. Blues, Saints win 9-5

After a disappointing loss to Goodwood which saw us trying to survive quite a few injuries, the Saints came back with their best game of the year against the top of the ladder Blues. Our confidence got a huge shot in the arm after the top of the first inning when Mitchell Lightbody shut down the Blues with two strikeouts and a put-out to first. The team supported Mitchell with 5 runs in the bottom of the first. The first five batters all reached base by making contact with the ball.

In the second inning the Blues started to chip away at our lead scoring 2 runs in the top of the second. However, we stopped their charge with two more strikeouts by Mitchell and a great throw from Sam Kazmer to Ethan Bachert to catch the opposition stealing third. In the bottom of the second, Matt Wood started the charge with a hard line drive through the infield. But a great double play by the Blues later in the inning left us without a run.

In the top of the third, the Saints picked up a quick out with an accurate throw from Ethan at third to Austin Lightner at first. Zack Evreniadis had taken the mound and limited the Blues to 2 runs while picking up two strikeouts. Our 5 run lead had slipped to one run after 2.5 innings. The Saints then came alive with 4 runs to end the third with a 9 – 4 lead. Notably, Zack Gawen was the only player to score two runs in today’s game.

Zack E. continued pitching in the top of the fourth and struck out the first batter. Their next batter reached base, but Matt Wood made a great diving play on the next hit to get this lead runner at second. Zack’s fourth strikeout ended the inning and delivered a victory.

Merry Christmas Saints.

Week 12 Results

I write to you in the week leading up to Christmas, with almost half our season over! Our Division 1 side has already won as many games half way through the season than it did for the whole of last year and our Division 2 side has already surpassed the number of wins that it had for the whole of last season! There has also been a very strong performance from the majority of our Junior teams, which augers well for the future. Also note at the end of this Report the great work that is being done by the Sturt Tee Ball Club All Star Team coached by Jamie Bishop.

On behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club I would extend compliments of the season, wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I am also mindful that for a number of our club members who have lost loved ones over the past year this Christmas will be particularly difficult. To those families I am sure that you know that the members of our Club will be thinking of you over this holiday period.

There is an informal gathering at Hyde Park Tavern on Saturday 22 December 2007 from 8.00 pm. This is intended for senior players and partners and other members of our club who would like to catch up for some adult company to celebrate the festive season. I understand that already a large number of Division 1 and Division 4 players and their partners have signed up for the night! If you would like to attend please email Jodie Brown to assist us with catering. Remember that all Events occuring within the Club are listed under Upcoming Events on the front page of our website. Please check them out regularly so you can put future dates in your diary!

To our players who will be representing the State in January, the Club wishes you every success!!

To our Junior Teams who will be playing a number of twilight games this coming week, all the best! At the conclusion of this week our Junior Teams will be having a few weeks off and recommencing in mid- January 2008. Coaches of these teams will advise you when training will recommence!

It is with sadness that I advise you that Ray Thorn, a well known and respected Umpire for both the summer season and winterball passed away on Sunday. Ray officiated in many games for the SABL at Sturt and is well known to many of us. On behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club, we extend our sympathy to his family. I also note with regret that another Sturt stalwart, Jimmy Cox, passed away recently.

Finally I would like to thank all our coaches, umpires, scorers and volunteers who have put in some much work for our Club over the first half of the season. Thank you for your commitment to our Club! Your efforts do not go unnoticed and I believe our results in both senior and junior divisions are reflective of the efforts that have been put in by so many. I would particularly like to thank both the Senior and Junior Committees for their support and special mention needs to go to our Coach Tony Catt and our Junior Coordinator David Lightbody who have both done an outstanding job in their new roles!

In what was to be a tight a game against Adelaide the boys were looking to atone for some average baseball played the week before. Adelaide certainly did not take us lightly and started there gun import. We gave young Pat Burns another chance on the hill and he threw much better, mixing his pitches up well.

With some good offence from Tom Brice and Daniel Turner and some top pitching from Telmo we were locked at 4 all in the 7th innings. TJ came in to finish the game off and the bats came alive again to win a great game 8-5.

The fighting spirit shown from the group was fantastic and it will be imperative we keep this up for our next 2 games before the Christmas break.

In a good quality game of baseball, the Division 2 boys went down fighting against Adelaide 6-4. Shane Horne pitched well for 6 innings and is showing excellent signs of improvement. Unfortunately the boys did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves, leaving far too many runners on base. Ryan Matchoss and Dan Martens were particularly good in the batters box but needed more support. Better discipline on pitch selection will be needed for next weeks must win game against Norths.

Division 4 (Coach: Stuart Crutchley)
Div 4 returned to their winning form against Goodwood this week with a hard fought 5-2 win under "guest coach" Stan Warrilow. Peter Turner proved a welcome addition to the side with 2 solid hits and a good game behind the plate. The big surprise for the day came from Stuart Crutchley pitching 6 out of 7 innings with only 14 balls to 52 strikes.
David Carter hopes to redeem himself as "guest coach" when we face up against Goodwood again on Wednesday night at 6pm - why not come out and have a bevie and show your support!

Unfortunately we went down to glenelg 14-1, we just didn't bat this week & they got on top of us early, our outfielders took some good catches. I would like to thank Jamie Bishop & Andrew Johnston for making guest appearances, also I welcome Ken Denham (our US import) to Division 6.

In our last game for the year we came up against an Adelaide side we had previously beaten by 10 runs. We needed to keep winning these games against the lesser teams if we wanted to stay up there. We struggled quite a bit early. The bats didn't start working till a bit after the hour when we had an 8 run innings. We ended up winning 17-7. Ali Young did well on the mound and everyone hit well once we got going to round off a decent performance. If we can keep this going after Christmas we should make finals.

Merry Christmas all

Sturt showed some real fight to beat third placed Port 15-12. Our pitchers had a little trouble with the radar giving up 10 walks, but we hit the ball when it counted. Three hits to Sam Day and triples to Jack Goldsworthy and Simon Evereniadis punctuated a solid win for the team.

We play Adelaide away this Wednesday at 6pm.

Hits; Day 3 Young, Harnett, Pearce 2 Brebner-Russ, Goldsworthy, Evereniadis.

We played GGCD at home this week and after a tight first couple of digs we came away with a 13-4 win. We started of 0-2 after the first couple after having three up three down. We then started to swing the bat and do the little things to get ourselves back in the game. Jayke Wayne had a triple and an in the park home run. Josh Masters started it all off with a fantastic bunt down to first base with the pitcher throwing the ball wide, we scored two and Josh ended up on second. Jackson and Jayke both did the job on the mound and held them well all day. Our fielding was a lot better this week and we had some great outs . Adam Hofmeyer out at right field with bases loaded took a great catch to have side away and stop them scoring. We sit at the top of the table going into the break a game clear of second placed West Torrens, hopefully we can keep up the hard work we have done in the first half of the season and take it into the second half. Enjoy your Christmas boys see you in 2008.

This loomed as a danger game for us as Kensington were sitting only half a game behind us having only lost 1 game and drawn 1. After a slow start the boys rallied well in the second to score 4 before scoring a single run in the 3rd and 5 in the 4th to secure a comfortable mercy rule win.
Jordan Wayne threw a good game (43 strikes from 76 pitches) although he often got behind early in the count which then put pressure on him to fight back which he did very well ! Matt Macbeth threw the last and had great rhythm but again his strike rate was lower than we would like with 16 strikes from 27 pitches.
Our batting was below par (against a reasonable pitcher) but to have achieved only 5 safe hits for the game was disappointing (Kensington only had 2).
A lot of balls were thrown by the opposition and several batters had multiple walks including Billy Burford who went 3 walks from 3 at bats! Well done mate.
I was very satisfied with our more aggressive base running and I am pleased to say that for most of the game there was improvement in support for our batters.
Unfortunately there was very little vocal support for our pitchers in the field so we need to improve this area.

Lots of positives again out of this game and another tough game mid week against an improving Southern Districts on Wednesday night so come ready to play boys and let's finish off a great 1st half to the season!!

Sundays game saw Joel Grantham and Sam Myers make their debut's on the mound and behind the plate for the U14 Saints Team. Both did a good job for the team which will give us more options as the season progresses. Once again we started off with 7 runs in the 1st dig and followed up with 4 in the 2nd and another 4 in the 3rd. Some of the players found themselves in positions they normally wouldn't expect to play, but to their credit, they all did a good job which can only help in their development.
A much tougher game on Wednesday night ahead of us against Golden Grove and I'm sure the boys are looking to finish off 2007 with a win.

Defeated Tigers 11-10
Hits - Matt 3, Josh 2, Tyler 1, Lazar 1, Spiro 1, Riley 1
We threw the team around a little this week and that gave the guys an opportunity to see what other positions are like With 2 experienced players in Henry and Haimish unable to play, this game was a learning exercise.
We tended to give a few runs away too easily with a lot of wild pitches and pass balls and some infield hits that should have been outs, but Jesse pitched his little heart out and threw well for the whole 80 pitches and Josh made some good plays from shortstop, however it turned out to be Will's day out - highlights of the game were rookie Will's line drive catch at rightfield that just stuck after a good effort to make ground - but there's more!
With scores tied, bases loaded, 1 out, I asked Will to bunt, (his first ever) and he laid down a pearler to score the winning run, although he forgot to run was incidental as he had done the job anyway - a lifetime achievement in 1 game Matt batted strongly for 3 good hits, as did Josh with 2 and Tyler continues to hit the ball hard each time.
Our batting is working well as we are scoring with hits with runners on base and forcing the issue.
Our fielding however needs more work and will only improve if we get full squads at training.
Look forward to the new year, merry Xmas all as we go to the break on top of the tree, but to stay there we need to work even harder as opposition teams will improve before finals time.

Sturt Major 17 defeated Glenelg 7

Great game by the boys all hitting the ball hard and fielding well. Jayden Trembath pitched a sensational game for his first visit to the mound this year striking out batters and giving many ground balls to the field. He was replaced by Darcy Cathro who also pitched for the first time this year with Hugh success keep it up Darcy. Boys all year I have been very happy with our attitudes towards the game always believing we have a chance to win no matter the situation. Our team work on and off the field is more than I can ask for all boys I believe realise it not about where you play, what position you bat or whether it your time to sit on the bench , but more about being part of a team and getting satisfaction from any one of us doing well. This is very evident to anyone that comes to our games. Umpires and opposition parent have all commented to me how enthusiastic our team is , keep it up boys.

Just remember a champion team will always beat a team full of champions.

See ya all Wednesday night.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulf)
We had another mid week game against the Sturt Blues. With a shortage of games due to scheduling and a gap where we did not train due to heat, our boys were understandably a bit rusty. Not to take anything away from the Blues, however, as they showed very strong hitting to beat us 15-7. Brodie pitched well, throwing a high percentage of strikes, and Stuart did a commendable job in relief.

While we'd had no team training for a couple of weeks many of the boys attended a skills clinic Tuesday run by Tony Catt and the A Grade players. We then played the Blues on Wednesday where, again, we did not show the same progress shown earlier in the year. I decided to have an optional training session on Thursday night to focus on a few things. I didn't know what to expect as training meant Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings were all taken up by baseball! However, to the kids (and parents) credit, all but 2 of the boys attended what was a good, spirited training session. There is little doubting the kids enthusiasm. This Thursday we finish off the first half of the year with a game against Southern Districts at Flinders.

Lastly, thank you to Tony Catt and many of his players for their time working with the Club's Little Leaguers. Thank you, too, to David Lightbody for organizing the session.

Sturt blues played Sturt in the Little League on Wednesday night.
Blues had something to aim for, having lost to Sturt in our last game two weeks ago, we were fired up for the rematch.
After a clinic on Tuesday night the Blues boys came out onto the field with bats swinging and connecting well with the ball. We played well in the field, this was helped with good pitching by Lachlan and Charlie, managing to keep the Saints score down to 7 runs.

The Sturt Teeball U10 All stars travelled to Kensington to take on East Torrens, Kensington and Southern Districts for round 2.
The improvements to the side were there for all to see... and it's very satisfying to see just how much improvement for the effort that the whole squad is putting in!
Batting, fielding, concentration and "thinking about the game" are all growing at a fantastic rate!

(Again worth noting - Sturt is the only team to play the 3 gruelling games ON TOP of their regular Sunday morning Tball!)
Game 1 - Sturt went down to Kensington - a great display of tight defense by both sides, with only one innings letting them get away from us...
"- next time guys!"

Game 2 - Sturt defeated East Torrens - a strong, well put together win with great efforts from all players

Game 3 - Sturt defeated Southern District - tough team, but great result - well played by all!

MVP for this carnival - a stand out performance over the top of 3 other thoroughly deserving players saw the MVP go to Simon Adkins!

FYI, next round will be at Southern Districts - Pls note new dates due to Clipsal etc.

Round 3 - Southern Districts Sunday 17 Feb 1pm -5pm

Week 11 Results

On Wednesday night our Division 2 boys have a game against Kensington at home commencing at 6.00 pm. The boys are doing really well this season so please see if you can come down to the Club to support them!

We had a tough day at the office on our Sunday double header at home with our Division 1 side coming up against Port Adelaide who are second on the ladder. Unfortunately we lost both games, but looking at the quality of players on our list it is clear that we can mix it well with the top sides in the League!

Also remember to mark out Sunday 16 December in your diary for the Sturt Christmas show which will occur at the Sturt Baseball Club commencing at 6.00 pm. For those new to the Club, this event is always popular, with lolly bags and drinks for the kids, together with the usual running races etc. The BBQ will also be fired up, with salads etc. Father Christmas will make his regular appearance!

Check out our Featured Player of the month for December our other import Jacob Hatjmar

The Sturt Baseball Club also would like to congratulate Brett Colmer, Tyler Lunnon, James Snelgrove and Ryan Cross in being selected in the first ever Little League South Team. This is yet another great result for our club, indicating the depth of juniors we have within in our club!

I also remind coaches, players and parents that we need to follow the Code of Conduct. You can also access this from the top menu teams>code of conduct.

Last week Sue Holmes's brother passed away and on behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club I would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Sue and all members of the Holmes family at this very sad time for them.

Our Division 6 Coach Jaye Johnson has decided to have a rest from playing baseball. Jaye has been a Junior coach and for some years the Division 6 coach. On behalf of the club, I would like to sincerely thank you for the huge effort, commitment and enthusiasm you have shown. The Club wishes you well for the future! I would like to thank Richard Carter for stepping into the role of the Division 6 coach for the remainder of the season.

I would also like to alert people to the fact that the SABL have continued to change games around in our schedule. I know this has been frustrating for all involved, but it is important that you double check the Sturt website on a regular basis, where we have the latest information which we have verified with the SABL. There remains some errors to the program which we have identified to the SABL and we are now waiting to receive advice from them as to how the issues we have identified are going to be resolved. If you notice a discrepancy between the SABL Program and the one we have on our website, please contact myself or David Lightbody as soon as possible. It is nearly impossible to keep up with all the changes that are made!

Fees

I also need to remind all of our senior players and junior players and their parents of the extreme importance of paying your subscription fees. The majority of our players have already paid their fees, however there remains a number of senior and junior players who have yet to pay their fees. The Club works on volunteers and for those who have not paid their fees, this results in addition work from your fellow members who have to chase these fees. This week Sturt took on Port Adelaide in a double header.

Game 1
In what was going to be a tough double header against Port we decided to pitch TJ in the first game to set the tone for the day. After leading 1-0 early, the Port Adelaide bats got going and we ended up losing 8-1. TJ pitched well without luck but we just never got going offensively which was where the game was decided.
Hits - Hatjmar, Brice

Game 2
Pat Burns started in on the hill for us in Game 2, a deserving reward for a kid having a stellar season. Unfortunately Port took to him and before we knew it we were 7-1 down in the 3rd inning. To the credit of the team they fought the game out well eventually losing 13-6. The boys could have dropped there heads and let the game wander but they made Port stick it out for the 9 innings.
Hits - Brice 3 (HR), Adkins 2, Hatjmar, Stokes (HR), Roeger (HR), Holmes

A disappointing day but i know this team is good enough to pick up the pieces and go out next week and turn things around.

Playing against Port and a win would mean we go 3 games clear for a finals berth, meant the game was very important. Shane Horne battled very well on the mound and going into the 5th inning the game was still locked at 3 all. Unfortunately some crucial mistakes in the field cost us late runs and we lost 7-3. The disappointing performance with the bats was the real story of the day. Only 3 hits - that effort doesn't deserve to win baseball games. Another big game this Wednesday night against Kensington at home - make sure we are all switched on.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
Team Sponsor: Premier Trailers

We didn't get off to the best of starts not giving a yelp in the box , then I didn't pitch too well giving up 5 in the 1st (with the help of another dodgy club umpy)the boys to their credit didn't let this get them down and then really lifted both in the field and in the box.We hit the lead in the 4th going up 9 - 7 . We made a couple of crucial errors to coincide with our bats going to sleep, we ended up losing 9 -11 in the 6th. Although a good effort against the top team we need to grab our chances when the opportunity presents.
A great effort by Michael Burns back after a 2 week break 2 - 3 with the bat and showed what a difference an outfielder can make. Burner also finished the game off on the hill and did a solid job. Jackson B-Russ did an outstanding job behind the dish catching his first game of Div 3 throwing out 2 runners. Takashi also came up with 2 hits. Pete Turner , Toby Cantrill,Will Frogley & Sam Bates all ended up with hits.
A great job today boys we pushed the top team and we even should have won!

Division 4 (Coach: Stuart Crutchley)
It looks like Div 4's "guest coach" for the week, David Carter will have to front up for another round after a shock defeat by West Torrens. We started well scoring 4 runs only to suffer a string of "mental errors" which cost us 14 runs in the bottom of the first dig. The game did not improve and we finished after 4 innings being mercied 17 - 6. Hopefully we can write this one off and return to our usual game winning standard.

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)
We played Adelaide at Adelaide and again our voodoo side came away with the win. We start off well with the lead off batter scoring on an outfield hit from Don Wulff but that was all we got for the day finally going down 9-1 (time was called). The RAT (Rick Trembath) started on the mound and did a great job for three innings holding them to 5 runs, but we could not make the runs to keep up with them. Don Wulff then came in and that scored a few more before the game was called. Bradley Trembath came in for his father the Rat after he tweaked a knee and for his first bat at senior level did a fantastic job facing about 8 balls before getting a hit which was a fly ball back over the pitchers head and unfortunately caught by the pitcher. Harrison Wood also came in for his first senior game but unfortunately did not get a turn at bat. We had Zulu under the weather sitting on the bench after a big Christmas lunch the day before and Big Mac also with a sore knee from the previous week. The big fella came in for a bat and smashed the first ball for foul before ending up with a K2. We have the weekend off before a twilight at Sturt Tuesday the 18th where we play Goodwood, we need to come away with the win to keep in the mix for the rest of the season.

Division 6 (Coach: Richard Carter)
Team Sponsor: Force Access

Yes that's right Div 6 won a game, big thanks to some guest appearance players Martin (froggie) Foster great job at third & Jason Hart absolutely brilliant job on the mound for complete game win including great pickoff at second. Everyone batted well including a stand up triple from Craig Martin.

Twilight West Torrens V Sturt
We played West Torrens at West Torrens for a top of the table spot and went down 11-4. The best thing to come out of this game is that West Torrens did not win the game we gave it to them on a plate. We could not buy a strike and gave up to many walks and pass balls. When it became our turn to bat to many watched the ball over the plate which we have not done all year. The boys can take a lot out of that game and relies that they need to play baseball for the whole 2 hours not get in front and then stop. We gave up 9 runs in one innings and that was the only thing that let West Torrens in for the win. It may have something to do with the game being a twilight and the kids were just not switched on. We need to make sure that for the rest of the season we do the things we have done for most of the first half of the season, that is swing the bat, talk in the field and back each other up. As long as the kids walk off the field with a smile on their face, win, lose or draw that is great. As I have said many times enjoy your baseball have fun on the day and winning becomes easy.

Sunday Game: Bye

Under 16/2 Saints (Coach: Richard Edwards)
Team Sponsor: Kensington Financial Services

Saints v Woodville 05/12/07 15-7
A slow start at the top of the 1st with Woodville scoring 5. Saints came in to bat & recovered with 8 runs. A 6-2 2nd innings, nil each in the 3rd & 1-0 in the 4th to the final 15-7 score. Ben Papps had his 1st go on the mound at the bottom of the 2nd innings & with 11 balls & some great support in the field from the rest of the team, sent 6 batters back to the bench. His pitching in the 4th saw side away with 3 balls.
It was great to see the guys working so well together, particularly in the 3rd & 4th innings with 3 up & 3 down in both. A great result after the previous Sunday's 9 all draw against the same team. Saints v Goodwood 09/12/07 20-20
Goodwood started well with 9 runs in the 1st but then Saints came right back at them with 9. 1 each in the 2nd, 6-4 in the 3rd to a 16-14, 2 run lead. With only minutes to go, we were back in the field & with walks & errors, Woodville scored 6 - which meant that we needed 5 runs to win. Unfortunately a double-play in the bottom of the 4th, which could quite easily have been a triple play, saw side away & game. Simon Evreniadis launched a(nother) ball over centre field for a home run. Tommy Matthewman tried to follow his lead but was, unfortunately, caught by centre-field - & not that far inside the home run line. Well done to everyone for a game well played - & thank you to Jarrad Small for helping out as catcher & Chis Small for his support on the side line.

Innings by innings scoreline
West Torrens 3 1 0 0 3 3 3 Total 13
Sturt 3 2 0 0 2 0 1 Total 8
The build up to the clash between Sturt and West Torrens had been talked about for weeks as West Torrens have 7 of the 16 State Under 14 players and Sturt have 6! The large crowd who gathered certainly witnessed a great game of junior baseball.

After giving up 3 runs in the first innings (when we made a couple of bad errors and should have held WT scoreless) the Sturt boys quickly drew level with some great hitting against a quality pitcher. Harrison Wood pitched very well for the first 4 innings before being replaced after throwing his 80 pitches of which 54 were strikes. Unfortunately Dakota Mitchell ,and later in the game Justin Zak, didn't have the same control we have seen in the past from them and West Torrens scored 3 runs in each of their last 3 innings to draw away and win comfortably in the end 13 to 8.

Both teams came ready to play and it was obvious from the outset that West Torrens are a quality outfit but just as obvious was that we can certainly match it with them. Justin Zak showed a great return to form with the bat (and good investment return for his parents for all the lessons he's having) and Harrison Wood smashed 2 doubles from his 3 at bats. All the boys swung the bat well and most managed to make great contact at some stage during the game.

Our base running was improved on previous weeks, but again there were times when we still we not aggressive enough. Unfortunately the great disappointment to me was the continued lack of talk in the field and lack of support for our hitters in the box! We really need to improve this area boys as it will help a lot in the weeks to come.

We face another tough game this week as we front up to Kensington who have been winning most of their games so let's get right back on track in the run up to the Xmas break.

Let's be positive boys , we could have won this game, so I still feel very happy with where we are at the moment!

Let's hope it doesn't happen again!

Under 14 Sturt Teal (Coach: Dean Franke)
defeated North 11-5
Hits - Tyler 2, Matt 1, Spiro 1, Rohan 1
With North having been one of the great improvers we went to their paddock expecting a close tough game and for 5 innings it was just that Matt pitched with excellent results throwing his 80 pitches for a 65% strike rate and 7 K2's and was ably backed up by Tinny at the plate.
With 2 silly plays though we let Norths into the game and had a struggle on our hands at 6-4 in the 5th, a change of pitchers in the last saw our bats and our little more depth come through with Jesse finishing off the game well.
Tyler hit a great home run and his batting is becoming much more reliable and valuable to the team and Rohan had a strong piece of the ball as well.
Everyone contributed in some way to the win whether batting, on base, or fielding, we may not have star players but we have battlers that have jelled well into a team when they apply themselves.
We need to keep pushing ourselves and success will follow, having lost just the 2 games and sitting top, we are only part of the way there, a half a season to go boys as the opposition will improve !

Week 10 Results

I write to you this week with our Division 1 team having another great win on Saturday! Our Division 1 Team has now reached the same number of wins that it had for the whole season last year!! This is very encouraging and really speaks volumes for the relentless work being undertaken by our Senior Coach Tony Catt and his coaching panel. This outstanding result!

The Division 1 side has a twilight against South on Tuesday night at Christies Downs and then has a double header against at the Club on Sunday against Port Adelaide at 12.30 and 3.00 pm. Hope you can come out and support the boys!

Please be advised of time change for Cardinals v Sturt (LL South) on Sunday 9th December from 3.00 pm to 10.00 am.

Also remember to mark out Sunday 16 December in your diary for the Sturt Christmas show which will occur at the Sturt Baseball Club commencing at 6.00 pm!

In a must win game against Norths the boys came out firing moving quickly to a 5 - 0 lead. Unfortunately we let North back in the game. In his first appearance for Sturt for the season, Tom Becker relieved Telmo and shut the Norths lineup down for 5 innings in a fantastic performance. Tom is invaluable to the young Saints side as he brings so much knowledge and experience to the team.

The Saints kept the scoreboard ticking over resulting in a much deserved 11-7 win.

Another big week coming up with a twilight game against Souths at there park and then a Double header against Port Adelaide on Sunday at home - make sure you get down to Norman Reserve to support us this weekend!

The boys came out breathing fire against Norths scoring 6 runs in the first innings and then another 6 in the second. This set the tone for the day and the Saints ran out comfortable winners 15-4. Shane Horne had a much improved effort on the mound and everyone contributed with the bat.

This victory starts to set the season up for the Division 2 side and they need to keep playing solid baseball to have a shot at finals.

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)
Two weeks ago we played East Torrens at their home ground and went down 11-0 with the mercy rule, but this week at our home ground we walk off the field with a 12-7 win in the bottom of the 5 innings with none out. We welcomed Brett MacBeth back for his first game of the season and it was great to see that he still has some fire in his belly. He had four at bats and had a hit with ever one of them, one into the field of play down third base line and the other three on the body for an easy walk down to first. We had three umpires for the day with Trent Small starting and after ringing his father up with a high ball he did a great job for his first time at umpiring. East Torrens gave him a bit of stick in the first innings for us at bat and that put him off, Mark Burns then did a couple of innings and Tony Catt finished off the game.

Don Wulff and Garry Woods did the job on the mound for us, Junior took a great catch at centre field and turned it into a double play at a time when East Torrens was looking dangerous with bases loaded and they were only 2 runs behind. Juniors double play put the game out of East Torrens reach and we went into our last bat at 10-7 up. We scored two runs on an outfield fly when two East Torrens players collided and the game was called. We are still having fun as a group and taking the Mickey out of each other which is why we all still enjoy the game. We are getting closer to getting the President Phil Robinson out for his first senior game and I am sure with a little bit more pressure from myself and others this will happen, right field is calling his name.

Twilight Game
After a disappointing loss last weekend we came up against a Golden Grove team which we really expected to beat. The boys really came out of the blocks firing with 9 runs in the first innings. Dan Lee was lights out on the mound and Ali backed him up well. Final score ended around 14-3.
Sunday Game
We played the top team Glenelg for the third time this series. They are the top team and undefeated so it was always going to be a tough ask. Our confidence was boosted with Pat Burns being on the mound for us for just the second time this season. We certainly benefited from the strong pitching performance of him. The boys came out with high confidence and held them really well in the field. We went down 1-0 early and got that back straight away and then they scored another to go 2-1 up. Toby came in after the second run and was really good on the mound for us against a high quality hitting line up. In the final innings we got some runners on and there pitcher got taken off and their number one pitcher got brought on. Due to some interesting base running however we scored a run and tied the game for a 2-2 draw. All the boys played really well and should be proud of themselves.

I'd also like to thank our coach Darren Stewart on behalf of our whole team. Daz gives up a lot of his time to come and coach us and he has done a fantastic job. After our twilight game he even bought everyone pizza's and has really helped build the team spirit which has got us through a lot of games.

We played Goodwood on their home ground and walked away with the win 27-3 but the final result will be 18-3 as they did not bat their last innings. Again the boys batted and run the bases very well. We even had a grand slam from Josh Masters with the ball still in the park, he smashed it out to centre field with bases loaded and scored himself. We started of looking asleep and it showed in our first innings with three up and three down, the trend then went in to the field and we let them score two but the boys then woke up and we proceeded to score 9 runs ever innings thereafter while only giving up 1 more to Goodwood. Goodwood started of with 8 players and thanks to Jordan Wayne for coming down and filling in for them. Great to see a bit of brotherly love when Jordan came up to bat and his brother Jayke was pitching, some how Jayke found some extra pace for this batter and won bragging rights K2'ing his brother.

Ben Young then came in and finished of the game. Jackson was behind the plate for the day and did a fantastic job. Ben Daws was great with some energy in the field at second and with the bat. All the other boys did the job as well both in the field and with the bat, this was a tough game in the end because we had to concentrate all game as we did not spend a lot of time in the field but when we were there the boys did the job. We play West Torrens this Wednesday in a twilight at West Torrens and this will be a game we need to be switched on for from the start, West Torrens have only lost one game as well and this will see were we are at for the rest of the season.

Saints v Woodville 9-9. A close fought game for the 4 innings played. At the top of the 4th, it was 9.6 but with fielding errors, Woodville scored another 3. All Saints needed was 1 run to win but unfortunately that wasn’t to be. What Woodville lacked in height, they made up for with their tenacity in the field.

Some good batting across the game especially one to the back fence by Simon Evreniadis but unfortunately we are still watching balls across the plate & are still making a few mistakes in the field. Whilst we’ve had a slow start to the season, I believe that the team is now in unity & should hold their own thru’ the rest of the season.

Well done to everyone for yesterday’s game! We face Woodville again on Wednesday & will be looking to ‘improve’ on yesterdays result

The build up to the local derby had been greatly anticipated and didn't disappoint!
A very solid effort by the Sturt boys saw us defeat Saints after a very tight start to the game.
Again we started slowly with only a single run in the first innings before scoring 2 runs, 3 runs and 5 runs in the remaining innings.

Dakota Mitchell pitched a great game throwing 33 strikes from 56 pitches and faced only 14 batters in the four innings. The Sturt safe hit tally probably isn't a true reflection of how well Dylan Holt pitched for the Saints as many of the outfield hits only just landed safe.

Again I was pleased with the bunching of hits, particularly at pressure times and often with 2 out. Our base running was greatly improved but there were still times when we were not aggressive enough in looking for the extra base. I am very pleased to say that our support for team mates while batting was great (particularly Jared Lo Basso)! Well done also to Jared for hitting a long home run in the last which unfortunately didn't count when scores reverted back to the previous innings.

And now we prepare for the challenge of facing our nemesis in West Torrens before facing Kensington in another danger game so the next couple of weeks will be tough!

We are certainly going to need to be on the ball to continue our unbeaten form.

Keep up the great work boys, you're doing great and reaping the rewards for your hard work!!

Sundays game saw us come up against the League leaders who are a very talented group comprising of 6 U14 State Players.

Dylan Holt pitched a great game for us but the scoreline didn't reflect the great job he did for us on the mound. If we had eliminated the very costly fielding errors and not lost 3 base runners, the scoreline could have been a lot closer.

As a young team with 5 First Year Players, one of the pleasing things to come out of the game was the way we made the opposition Sturt boys work to manufacture their runs, rather than being blasted all over the park. Yes the pressure they put on us contributed to some of our errors, but good sides will do that. We need to learn from Sundays game for the future so we can develop into a better Team from the experience.

Well done to the Sturt boys on the weekend and good luck for the rest of the season. To the State Representatives, all the best for your up coming State Series

To the SAINTS boys, lets look forward to this week, firstly taking on the Parents on Friday night and then East Torrens on Sunday.

Jesse pitched the entire game for only 66 pitches and is turning into an accurate and very capable frontline pitcher Our bats did the talking and with a number of walks thrown by the opposition it made it easy for us to score 2 innings of 7 runs each.
We were reasonably well disciplined again and more guys are looking for signals to push the game along Josh made some great plays at shortstop, Henry caught exceptionally well in his first try at the spot and Matt was the anchor at first base.
Guys that didn't get hits got walks and everyone contributed to the game in some way which was pleasing

Twilight Wednesday night 28 November 2007
On our first mid week game we battled the unbeaten Blues, who have taken all before them this year. In a super display our boys came on top with our second 8-7 win in a row.

Brodie MacBeth opened the pitching with only a small number of pitches available as he threw the Sunday before, as well. Hayden Emery came in next and did an incredible job holding the mighty Blues down. Offensively, Sturt put on quite a display with many big hits and good running. Going into the last inning we led 8-3 with Stuart Brennan in to pitch. The Blues scored 4 seemingly quick runs to pull within 1. Stuart then found the zone getting the last 2 outs without giving up a run sealing the victory.

A good game by our boys and a good never-give-up effort by the Blues.

Today’s game was an exciting 12-10 win for the Saints over the West Torrens Eagles. The game went quickly and we played five innings for the first time this season. Our pitching and defense was a roller coaster ride… we held the Eagles scoreless in the first, allowed five in the second, none in the third, five in the fourth and none in the top of the fifth. In that mix we had 7 strikeouts by pitchers Sam Kazmer and Austin Lightner. The team also had a couple of spectacular catches in the effort… a line drive caught by Sam ended the first inning, a high fly to left was caught by Jayden Trembath (a last minute substitute), and Austin caught a high fly at first. James Snelgrove (another sub) and Fraser Crameri were a great tandem at first and second base, combining for the final out in both the third and fifth innings. Mitchell Lightbody was superb behind the plate and almost threw out a runner stealing second base. Our batting was consistent as usual… great efforts by Ethan Bachert (2 hits), Sam (2 hits and a walk), Matt Wood (1 hit, 1 walk), and Austin (2 walks). Our subs (Jayden and James) were fantastic as they hit safely each time at bat.

Sturt opened the Wednesday night game strongly with 4 runs in the first innings, we came up to bat and with some wild swings, we managed only one run. Sturt picked up another 4 in the next inning with our pitcher being off his usual best and a couple of mistakes in the field. Next up to bat we watched too many strikes go over the plate again only managing 1 run. In the third innings things were looking bleak 8-2 down, and with the pitch count being shared with the previous weeks game nearly out of our regular pitches. It was time for a radical move; we called on Lachlan to come up and pitch his first game for us. He did a fantastic job, combined with great catching and good fielding Sturt sat down with out scoring. Next with spirits higher we were up to bat, this time we managed to chalk up 4 runs with some good batting unfortunately not enough to stop time and game being called.

The Blues showed the quality of the team, 8 to 2 down- they didn’t give up or look downhearted they just fought harder. In the end bringing a 8-7 loss (first of the season). If you must lose that is the way to do it.

Sturt ventured out to East Torrens expecting a tough battle against there import pitcher and that is exactly what we got. Our pitching staff had a tough day at the office although Tom Winter came in and through 3 quality innings before getting tired.
We left too many runners in scoring position and just couldn't get going offensively.
East Torrens were too good on the day and won 8-0.
We face Golden Grove again on Tuesday night at the club and we need to make amends for the shocking last inning fade out against these guys last time. Must win.

Superbly led by Pat Burns on the mound the boys did enough to defeat East Torrens 7-3. Ali Young proved that he will be a player to watch in the future with some excellent catching and was solid with the bat. The boys need to start grouping their hits together better and put some pressure on the A grade players for spots.

Not alot I can say about Saturdays game, 2 weeks in a row now we have been disappointing. Losing I can live with but not the way we have been. We have had too many strike outs to pitchers that don't deserve them to be honest the pitching hasnt been that good to warrant 9 strike outs in 7 digs.Pitch selection needs rapid improvement.

A 14 year old and a 13 year old showed how it should be done. Jackson Brebner-Russ showed us what patience in the batters box can achieve with 2 walks. Dakota came to the plate in the last and smoked one to the outfield for his first hit in senior baseball. We can all learn from these two. Will Frogley went 2 for 3 which brings his average to .600 his experience at the top of the order has been priceless, great job. Pete Turner hit a stand up triple nice rip, I think I can still hear him catching his breath. Elliot Cameron piped up with a hit late in the game and played a solid game at 3rd which included a great block to get an out at 1st way to put your body on the line, a Webber line drive is always going to tickle. I am not to sure where we go from here, up is the only way!

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)
Great to see our number one ticket holder out there to see the boys play, it is always great to see Ron MacBeth at the games.
We travelled down to Glenelg for this week's game which was a must win game for us to keep in the mix. We started of with 9 players and Trent Small on the bench filling in for any injuries that may have happened. This was one of those games that we had to concentrate on at all times as it may have gotten away from us and let Glenelg take the win.
We moved Junior (Rodney Angel) into the infield for the first time this year and as we all thought he struggled there at short stop making two errors which could have been costly but we were luck enough to get out of the innings giving up no runs.
The bats for the boys this week though were HOT HOT HOT final score Glenelg 6 Sturt 23.
We had the Wulff hit a grand slam over centre field which brought our cheer squad of their seats cheering. We had 4 home runs hit in the game two of them by the Wulff and the other two by the Angel. Trent Small came into the game after the coach went down with what looked like a season ending hamstring tear but for his quick thinking and moving to the bench he should be ok for this week!
Barry Lunnon again did the usual fantastic job on the mound to hold Glenelg to 6 runs while we piled on 12 for the first innings. A great game by the boys but we need to follow that up this week with a win against East Torrens at home

Mid week Twilight Sturt V Goodwood U16/2
We played Goodwood in a twilight at Home and again the boys were to strong for Goodwood having a comfortable win 11-4. Jai and Jackson did a great job on the mound and the field backed them up when ever Goodwood put the ball in to play. Brett Mulryan did a fantastic job behind the plate all night for his first full game as catcher. Again and as always it is great to see all the boys swinging the bat and running the bases well.

Sunday Sturt V Saints
As the home side this week we got one back on Richard and his Saints with a 14-7 win. Jai Redigolo put one over the right field fence this time to make up for the one last week when it hit the fence and bounced back in for a two bagger. This week Ben Young started of on the mound and held them for three of the four innings and Jayke Wayne came in and finished the game off. Again the boys look for signals they then hit the ball and run great to see a very strong batting line up. We did go to sleep in the second innings and let the Saints take the lead. A few errors came into the game at that stage with some wild throws back to the pitcher from the catcher this allowed them to score runs they should not have, but a quick rev up from myself and the boys switched back on to finish the game of well.

Under 16/2 Saints (Coach: Richard Edwards)

Saints v Sturt 7-14. Another great game between the 2 Sturt teams. Unfortunately a 9 run innings by Sturt, which included a magnificent 3 run hit, which just about landed in Scotch Collage, by Jai Redigolo sealed our fate. Fielding errors again, unfortunately, played a big part in runs being scored against us. A great job on the mound by Josh Grantham, a great catch in centre-field by Tommy Matthewman & some good play across the game but unfortunately not enough to close the gap.
Score: Sturt 1, Saints 1.

Under 14 Sturt Coach (Coach: Garry Wood)

Score line Sturt 12 East Torrens 1
Safe hits : Lemon 4 from 4 , McFarlane 2 , Mitchell 2 , Wayne 2 , Wood, Macbeth, Trembath , Burford, Zak and LoBasso 1 each.
A very solid effort by the Sturt boys saw us defeat East Torrens quite comfortably after a very tight start to the game. East Torrens started well with a home run in the first before being completely shut down by Harrison Wood who pitched an excellent game allowing just 2 hits and no walks in his 4 innings on the mound. Harrison threw just 51 pitches of which 36 were strikes. Justin Zak threw the last innings with 14 pitches of which 7 were strikes. We struggled with the bats early against some accurate pitching but slowly got things going with 1 run in the first innings , 2 in the second , 4 in the third , 0 in the forth and 5 in the fifth.

The continued improvement in the bunching of hits was again very pleasing. Jess Lemon had an absolute day out collecting 4 safe hits from his 4 at bats while Jordan Wayne, Dakota Mitchell and Shaun McFarlane all collected multiple safe hits.

Unfortunately the same areas of our game continue to be of concern! They are our lack of aggression when base running and general support of team mates in the batting box so we will continue to work hard on these areas.

We now have a very tough game against the Saints this week before facing the pacesetters in West Torrens and then Kensington so the next few weeks will give us an idea of where we really sit. We are certainly going to need to be on the ball to continue our unbeaten form.

Keep up the great work boys, now it gets harder and harder!!

SAINTS 12, def HENLEY & GRANGE 7
Once again we started off with a bang scoring 7 runs in the first dig with some good controlled hitting and some smart, aggressive base running.
Jack Colmer started on the mound for us and tried hard, giving up very few hits but we booted the ball way too often due to a lack lustre attitude in the field. This coupled with walks didn't help our score line.
One of the pleasing things from the game was our ability to get back on task when we needed to but the boys will soon learn you can't afford to drop your guard against the better teams in the competition.
Some of the other positives to come out of the game were the backing up by the outfielders, James "Snibly" Snelgrove's relief pitching and our ability to execute the bunt.
Stay focused guys and let's look forward to our next challenge against our other Div 1 Sturt side this weekend.

Twilight 21/11/07 vs Goodwood won 16-8
Hits - Losic 1, Straatman 1, Lightbody 1, Saundry 1, Hutchins 1
We were aided by opposition pitchers that gave up 16 walks, but good discipline in the batters box allowed us to amass such a good score and hitting with runners on
Harrison Lightbody helped us out and pitched an excellent game and came out with the score at 16-3, Josh caught well even with the theatrics.
Our opponents struggled and this fortunately gave us the opportunity to swap the team around a little to see what other positions guys could play

Sun 25/11/07 vs Tigers won 11-7
Hits - Tindall 3, Losic 1, Rozaklis 2, Saundry 1, Franke 1
Apart from a little brain fade and lack of desperation in the second innings, the boys played well with everyone contributing in some way
Once again we were assisted by the Tigers pitchers giving up 11 walks and once again we were disciplined enough not to swing at bad pitches
We are also looking for and picking up signals now which is promising
Little Josh caught pretty well with Matt doing an excellent effort on the mound once he got his motor running and Jesse did a great job to finish off the game
Henry, Lazar, Matt, Riley and Spiro hit the ball hard when it was there to be hit and batted our runs in Joshy picked up 3 hits for the day and Luke got across the plate on a pass ball where he had to slide for the first time (he's starting to get the hang of this baseball caper now )
We look forward to next week now with anticipation as we are 4-2 and playing some good baseball at times when we keep our concentration going !

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulf)
Playing West Torrens, at their ground, and against a very quick pitcher our boys came out firing with 3 runs. Hayden Emery opened the pitching for us with 3 up and 3 out in their 1st inning leaving the score 3-0 our way. Forgive us for thinking this was too easy but when the boys are on their game they're tough to beat. However, we knew it was not going to be as easy as the 1st inning appeared and it ended up being as tough a game as we expected. In fact, we went into the last inning down 5-4. We scored 4 to their 2 in the last inning to squeak out an 8-7 win!
Again we were missing 4 players but had terrific help from Henry B, Lazar, and Josh. Tyson Ottaway was one of our batting stars with 2 hits while Hayden and Brodie MacBeth did the job pitching.
Like most of us, the boys can get down on themselves when they don't perform as they expect. A good lesson to show how it only takes 1 pitch or 1 at bat to turn it around was Henry Wood yesterday. Woody was upset with himself for striking out his 2nd at bat and suggested he get dragged. I did not take him out of the game and in our last inning when we scored 4 it was Woody who had a big hit to score 1 and then ran around the bases to score himself! A super example of how we can get em next time and to not give up. Way to go Woody!

Yesterday saw round 1 at East Torrens played in great spirit and determination by our 12 players.

The whole team (and parents!) showed great concentration and put in 100% the entire day - with a good result overall. (FYI, Sturt is the only team to play the 4 hours of gruelling games ON TOP of their regular Sunday morning Tball!)

Game 1 - Sturt defeated Southern District - a disciplined, strong effort in the field and with bats put paid to a promising Hawks outfit...
Game 2 - Sturt defeated East Torrens - a good display of batting and fielding and a deserved solid win
Game 3 - Sturt went down to Kensington - once again our toughest opponents in 07 - this will be the team to beat, but with practise and refinement, we have the squad who can make this a closely fought contest over the series!

The week has got off to a great start with our Division 1 boys winning a cracker of a game on Tuesday night with a 2-1 victory against Glenelg! Well done to all the boys! Following a solid effort our Division 1 boys lost the double header to Goodwood on Sunday.

I am very pleased to congratulate Sam Day on his selection in the Under 16 state team and also to Jackson Brebner Russ as being first reserve.

Division 1 Match Report - Game 1
We really pumped up to win the first game of the double header against Goodwood and Dale Martens set about his task beautifully as we opened up a 4-0 lead. Unfortunately, Dale lost his way and one timely hit off TJ meant we were behind the eightball again 5-4. The boys fought this game out only to leave the tying run on third base yet again. We lost 6-5.
Hits - Winter 2, Holmes, Hatjmar, Turner

Game 2
After handing back the momentum to Goodwood late in Game 1, it was going to need a massive effort in the second game. We started Pat Burns on the mound. This was his first A grade appearance and he put in a solid effort for 5 innings but pitch location was still a problem and we found ourselves behind 5-0. The team showed excellent spirit to claw there way back into the game to keep in touch only to lose 6-2. Zac Stokes was impressive with the bat with two hits including a long home run.

A disappointing day but we need to regroup for this weekends must win game against East Torrens.

After showing some fighting spirit in the box led by Darren Stewart, the boys handed Goodwood the game with some costly errors in the field. Shane Horne and Ben Packer were solid on the mound but did not get the support they needed as the Saints lost 8-7. This group needs to improve on efforts like this if they want to retain there spot in the Top 6.

Woodville 20 defeated Sturt 2

Division 4 (Coach: Stuart Crutchley)
Our winning streak looked a bit shaky this week when we faced the new kids in the league - Gawler. The boys seemed rather complacent playing a side that are yet to win a game and that was reflected on the field. For the first five innings Gawler showed good batting skills and benefited from our fielding errors to lead 4-0. This weeks "Guest Coach" Kris McArdle was looking a bit nervous as Gawler's pitcher Ricky Clark held us without a hit and scoreless to the bottom of the fifth however a clean hit to right field from Simon Gooley woke the team up and we rallied to a 6-4 win. Brenton Slee fronts up as "Guest Coach" for our twilight clash at West Torrens on Wednesday where we hope to continue our undefeated run.

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)
A game not to remember against East Torrens but a training session to remember at the Young's where we concentrated on fluid intake and arm strength, back to the game final score with the mercy rule was 11-0 not a good day but it shows us where we are at. East Torrens are the team to beat in the five's and we just were not switched on. I think most of us where saving ourselves for the training session. Glenn Young did a great job behind the plate all day even after he was railroaded by the smallest bloke on the field. I believe the story is he was thrown back 5 metres now but he got the out. Garry Wood played his first game of the season and was great when the balls did not come too hard but for the hard one he was backed up by left field. Again Junior was benched for an injury which was not evident the following day at the Young's. After our first training session on Sunday I am sure we will be back in the winners circle this week. For all those at our first official training session we would like to thank the Young's for the use of their place, Glenn Young for not cooking the BBQ and we also would like to welcome those that have now joined the DIV 5 FAMILY.

The boys came up against a Goodwood team who had started strongly this season. The game was a pitcher's duel early with Daniel Lee absolutely dominant on the mound. Sturt broke the game open around the games half way mark with three runs in one innings due to good pressure on the bases by the boys. Toby Cantrill came into pitch after Dan and shut the game down very well. Apart from the pitchers, special mention must go to Brad who took one of the best catches in U18's you'll see. Also to our coach Daz who came up with some inspiring nicknames for us all before the game. A solid 3-1 win, which we need to carry into this week to get some momentum going.

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Chris Small)
We played the Saints under 16's this week and again the boys were great in the box with the bats and running the bases but unfortunately we went down 15 - 10 in the last. The thing that hurt us this week was the amount of walks we gave up but that is baseball and I am sure that we will bounce back from our first loss and when we meet them again this Sunday it will be a different story. I am pleased that all the boys are hitting the ball well and Jai almost put one out the park over right field if not for the $20000 fence improvements. Jarrad Small was good behind the plate until he turned his head and took a ball in the neck, he will be OK but out for a couple of games once again thanks to Janet Young and Jeff Masters for their assistance. I would also like to thank all those for their concerned phone calls. We play a twilight game this Wednesday at the club so if you are not busy please come out and support the team and the club.

Under 16/2 Saints (Coach: Richard Edwards)

Some light hearted banter between the teams across the 2 hours made for a ‘good fun’ game! Despite some silly errors in the 1st innings, the team settled down to a 5-6 at the bottom of the 1st. At the bottom of the 2nd, 6-10 & that’s where we held them with a 9-0 last innings to the 15-10 result. The unfortunate incident in the last innings with Jarrad using his “face” to stop a ball probably went a long way to disrupting momentum for Sturt. The good news is that he, apart from a sore neck, appears to be OK.

Josh Grantham pitched well - as did Jayke Wayne for “the opposition” - & some good hitting & base running from the team certainly helped us, particularly in the last innings. A great result which I’m sure that Saints will want to reverse next Sunday – eh, Chris!

Well done Saints.

Score line Sturt 13 defeated Adelaide 2
Safe hits : Wayne 3 from 3 including grand slam home run, Trembath 3 , Lo Basso , Wood and Lemon 2 each and singles to Macbeth, Mitchell, and Burford.
Another good team effort by the Sturt boys saw us defeat Adelaide quite comfortably. We got off to a great start in the game scoring 5 runs in the first and seven in the second innings before the bats went cold and the boys lost some focus on finishing off the game.
The continued improvement in the bunching of hits through the whole line up was very pleasing. Billy Burford had a great day out in the field and showed great improvement in the batting box. Dakota Mitchell threw a great game with 63 pitches (30 strikes) in his 4 innings for no runs before being replaced by Jordan Wayne in the last 39 pitches (17 strikes).
Jordan had a super day with the bat going 3 for 3 including a long grand slam home run! Bradley Trembath caught really well and also collected 3 safe hits while it was great to see Jared LoBasso and Jess Lemon back amongst the safe hits.
We still have areas of our game that are concerning , and our emphasis in the next few weeks will be on base running , looking for signals and execution of those plays and general support of team mates in the batting box (same things as mentioned last week boys!).
We now have some much tougher games coming up with East Torrens , Saints and West Torrens in the next few weeks so we will have a better idea of where we stand after those games. We are certainly going to need to be on the ball to continue our unbeaten form. So now after week 6 we have scored 101 runs while only allowing 6 against us so it is hard to be too critical !

SAINTS 11 def GOLDEN GROVE 1
Sunday’s game was one where it was going to be interesting to see what the team has got out of our last 3 weeks and to the boy’s credit, they came out firing.
Dylan Holt pitched his best game for the season by getting in front of hitters and then finishing them off. The field also did a good job in backing their pitcher up and making the plays without too much fuss. Each player was doing his bit to help each other out and Tim Kimber, although starting on the bench for the 2nd time in 3 weeks stayed positive and kept supporting his team mates and when he was brought into the game, he came up with a good hit. Well done Tim.
Once again, we where aggressive in the batters box and picked up 15 hits while only giving up a couple of hits ourselves. Keep that focus up in the batters box boys and the runs will come.
It was a good team effort and the boys stayed focused for most of the game. Well done boys and lets look forward to our next challenge.
Thanks once again to the families and friends who keep supporting our team.

Under 14 Sturt Teal (Coach: Dave Kompo)
Lost to Glenelg 11-10
After a promising start and being 10 nil up at one stage the boys had a brain fade in the last innings With some poor selection of plays and a lack of desperation the team felt rightfully disappointed at their poor finish to the game they had on toast.
Some hard work on defensive plays is required and more concentration during games However, Jesse pitched well first up but got tired near the end of his pitch count and was ably supported by Matt behind the plate Henry once again hit hard for 2 strong safe hits and overall we were very disciplined in the batters box picking up 16 base on balls.
Josh had his first shot at the mound and pitched reasonably well but the wheels fell off in the field and he didnt get the support he needed.
Condolences to the Losic family for their sad loss of father and grandfather respectfully
We look forward to our twilight game this week to atone ourselves

Sturt 3 Vs West Torrens 7
Great effort boys we always had a chance to win this game. West Torrens pitcher throw a good game, Sam Cavanagh manage to belt him to the outfield, Henry Brennan also hit well and pitch his quota doing a great job. Some big catches in the outfield for Jayden Trembath. This is one of the teams to beat I am sure we can get them next time. Keep it up boys we are improving every week.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulf)
Last time we played at Southern Districts we were rugged up for winter-like conditions while yesterdays game was in mid 30's. The temperature was hot, as were the lads, getting back on track with an 11-5 victory, giving themselves an opportunity to blast out the Club song once again.

Mitchell Lightbody and Brodie MacBeth were not as accurate as normal with their pitching as we gave up 10 walks. However, some good fielding, along with some timely strikeouts, got us out of a few jams. Jack Murphy did well at first base as there were a number of outs made by Jack. William Hill and Henry Wood did well catching, too.

On the batting, Wulffy, Woody, Brodie, and Jackson Blanks each had a couple of hits. Brodie had our first home run for the year with a blast to rightfield while Woody had a blast of his own to left field for a double.

We were missing 4 of our players so thank you to Mitchell for filling in and doing a great job. Next week we're off to West Torrens.

Little League 2- Blues 21 -4 defeated Kensington
Zac pitched a great game to open and then Charlie finished them off in great style again... Alex did a sensational job behind the plate - no-one stole on him and he's growing in ability every week!
Special mention too - Damon Grey played a great 1/2 in right field with a great throw to 2nd to stop the runner!
And they batted very well up and down the order...
All the team did a great job and deserved their crushing victory!
Thanks to parents support - Simon, Helen, Susan and of course Greg and his perfect coaching record filling in while Derek has been off in Honkers! Hope he can maintain the record when he re-assumes control!
