Twighlight Result and Heat Policy

A great win by our Division 1 boys last night..match report below.

Also a reminder about the Heat Policy given the forecast for the weekend. For your future reference it is on the front page of our website so you can always check back during the season if you need to double check

Division 1 Match Report - Twilight Match

The midweek games are very tricky for the boys after working all day and rushing to get to the game on time but last night they turned up to play. Telmo Esperito-Santo had a much better preparation last night and this was reflected in his excellent performance. He threw a high percentage of strikes and got through 6 and 2/3 innings while only conceding 1 run against a potent Glenelg lineup.

A 6th inning home run to Zac Stokes put the Saints ahead 2-1 and the boys held on to win as Tom Winter put out a loaded bases fire in the 7th! This was our best performance so far and we need to back this up against Goodwood this weekend.

Week 6 Results

Our Division 1 side on Wednesday night had another heartbreaking outcome. The team was leading going into the final dig only to have the game end with an 8-8 result! I know this has been hard for the boys but we all really do appreciate their commitment. I understand we had 17 players turn up to play on Wednesday night! This is unheard of for a twilight game and speaks volumes for the hard work being done by Tony Catt and his coaching panel. On Saturday night before a big crowd our Division 1 boys came through with a great win against Woodville, final score 7-2!

Remember we have a twighlight game at the Club on Tuesday night against Glenelg, commencing at 6.00 pm so make every effort to get to Norman Reserve for the game!

Sponsors

The Sturt Baseball Club thanks all of our sponsors for their generous support. As club members please use our sponsors whenever possible and let them know you are from Sturt! Go to our Sponsors webpage for all the details about our sponsors.

We welcome another Team Sponsor to our Club. Greg Burford from Personalised Tax Services has kindly agreed to be a Team Sponsor for Gary Wood's Under 14- Sturt side. We greatly appreciate Greg's willingness to act as a Team sponsor.

Overall the Club is overwhelmed at the response we have been receiving to requests for sponsorship. There is no doubt this has been the best year on record for what has been achieved!

I am aware that some teams have been more successful at gaining sponsors than other teams. The Senior Committee discussed this issue the other night and are mindful to work on processes where there is equitability for sponsorship across teams wherever possible. However the Club is very grateful to what has been achieved and wants to build on the successes of those teams which have obtained outstanding sponsorship results.

The Club can only benefit from the support of so many sponsors and as a club we will be following up all our sponsors to thank them for their generosity and to work with them with the objective of securing them as long term sponsors of our club.

In the first instance, the Club is keen to help any team who feels that they would like assistance in obtaining more sponsors and would ask that in the first instance they discuss this with Tony Catt.

If you would like to become a sponsor or want to discuss sponsorship options for your team please contact Tony Catt on 0412 244 327

Sturt fronted up to another home game against Woodville ready to atone for the slack performance on Wednesday night. Dale Martens pitched superbly threw 6 innings to get the Saints in front 3-1 and pass the duties over to TJ to finish proceedings off. The Saints kept the scoreboard ticking over to defeat the Senators 7-2. This was an excellent all round performance from the team and the boys are learning to play 9 innings of baseball instead of 7 or 8. Paul Holmes was sensational in the box picking up 4 hits. He has certainly set himself for a big season and is discovering better pitch selection is one of the keys to becoming a better hitter.

Hits - Holmes 4, Hatjmar 2, Turner 2, Roeger 2, Passmore, Winter.

Complacency would have been the only thing stopping Sturt from defeating Woodville for the second time, but to the boys credit they came out breathing fire and put the game beyond doubt early.

Pat Burns kept things solid from the mound and again the boys were prepared to be patient in the box which allowed them to score threw walks.

Another comprehensive victory to the Bs, Sturt 12 defeated Woodville 1

A very disapointing result against the second team on the ladder. This was a more than winable. For the first time this year we fell back into the Div3 side of yesteryear which was the most disapointing thing, too many dumb errors and lack of hitting beat us , the opposition didnt.
Enough negative there was only 2 positives that stuck out to me and that was Ben Packers great job on the hill with no luck and another great job by Will Frogley at short stop with a couple of good plays ,as lead off he also went 3 for 3.
Much improvement is needed mentally if we are to be successful this year instead of being 2-4 we realistically be 5-1.

Division 4 (Coach: Stuart Crutchley)
Game to be rescheduled

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)
We traveled down to Southern Districts for our game this week played in fine weather and fine spirit. We walk away with a nice 16 - 3 win. The boys had a day out with the bat and what ever they put in the field we jumped on, knocked down or caught. Barry Lunnon and Don Wulff both did the job on the mound and with the rest of us included we all hit the ball like they where water melons. In the second innings we scored 12 runs to put the game out of their reach especially with the way we were fielding. In that second innings we had 3 home runs, 5 two baggers and 4 safe hits. The only upset for the day was Dean Franke hitting into a double play which saw him benched and Pop not happy.
A great game for the Div 5 boys which we needed after the last couple of weeks. All now looking forward to the first training session.

Under 18's played Woodville on Sunday. The game started well with the team hitting strong and scoring two runs. But fell away after this and did not score again. Congratulation to Ally Young who pitched a great game with only one earned run against him. The boys enthusiasm dropped dramatically after the first innings along with their concentration. A positive focus should now be on this week's game and hopefully we will have a better result.

We played at home and the ground was in great shape for a day of baseball. We had a fantastic win 18 - 7. Again we had Jayke Wayne and Jai Redigolo on the mound and as they have in the other games did a fantastic job. Once again the pleasing thing to see is that all the boys are swinging the bat and either hitting or going down with a swing, they all then run the bases well although we had two fall asleep on the bases but we are still aggressive when we are running. The boys are all playing good baseball at present and must remember to keep up the talk and enjoy their baseball, I am pleased to see that at the end of the game all the boys shake the oppositions hand with great sportsmanship and then as a group have a laugh and smile with each other with some friendly banter amongst themselves.

Saints v West Torrens 7-16.

After 3 good innings, 4-3, 1-0, 2-4 to 7 all at the bottom of the 3rd, pitching & in-field errors allowed WT to score 9 runs in the final innings. With the number of runners we had on base at any time thru’ the 1st 3 innings, the end result should have been a lot closer but unfortunately batting & some ‘doubtful’ calls, more so than WT play, limited us to our 7 runs. WT maintained the 1 pitcher thru’ the game, we rotated 4. Our pitchers got out there & did their best but accuracy & consistency was just not there. We definitely do need to dedicate more time to pitching at our practice sessions to give our pitchers more confidence on the mound.

An all round well done to the team. They are, despite the 1-3 win-loss so far this season, starting to work well together & on the field.

Score line Sturt 22 Woodville 2

Safe hits : Wood 3 from 3 , Macbeth 3 from 4 , Mitchell , Zak and Trembath all 2 and single safe hits to McFarlane , Wayne and Lo Basso

A much better team effort by the Sturt boys yesterday saw us account for a physically smaller opponent in Woodville. After scoring 3 runs with 2 out in the first innings the team then scored 7 , 5 and 7 in the remaining 3 innings to finish off the game in great fashion.

A big improvement in the bunching of hits, particularly through the middle order, was very pleasing. We still have many areas of our game to improve , particularly base running , looking for signals and execution of those plays and general support of team mates in the batting box.

The season is still very young and to have scored 91 runs while only allowing 4 against is a fantastic start. We have some tougher games coming up in the next few weeks so our efforts at training and on game days will need to be stepped up.

Justin Zak pitched well after a nervous start and was well supported by all the fielders and hitters while Harrison Wood again did a great job catching the whole game in warm conditions. The hardest part for me as coach at the moment is ensuring our pitchers are getting regular starts and with 5 quality starters that is proving tough! We will step up our ball pen work over the coming weeks to ensure the boys arms are in good condition.

For now we stand 5 wins from 5 , well done and keep up the good work boys.

Congratulations go to the following boys who are still in the State Squad of 18 which will this week be trimmed to the 16 touring to Lismore in January 2008

WEST TORRENS 18, SAINTS 0.

We came up against a well drilled, very talented, very committed and well coached West Torrens team. To go with that the West Torrens players and coaches showed great sportsmanship which was great to see.

Although we lost 18 – 0, there were still plenty of positives to come out of the game. Our hitters picked up 2 hits from 18 at bats but we only had 3 strike outs against a quality pitcher. We were making good contact all day but just didn’t get any breaks our way.

That’s BASEBALL some days.

If we take that good positive, aggressive attitude into the batters box every at bat, we will do Ok in the future. WELL DONE BOYS.

In the field, Dylan Holt pitched well but needed more support in the field, especially against a very good and aggressive base running team.

There was so much to learn from this game which hopefully the boys will take on board and aspire to reach the standard we came up against on the weekend.

This week’s trainings and game against Golden Grove is now something to look forward to and hopefully we can notch up another win.

Enjoy the week boys and let’s go and take on Golden Grove.

We were fortunate to come up against a struggling opposition this week to record the result we did It was also an opportunity to throw everyone around in different positions Josh caught well in his debut behind the plate and Hamish pitched well to get us off to a good start and an excellent line drive catch back to him Discipline in the batters box to swing at strikes was good as there was little to swing at and some strong hitting by Tyler (4 hits), Henry, Spiro and Matt with runners on helped us amass a good score Fielding again was a little scratchy and with work will improve, especially with concentration, Matt had some routine plays at shortstop and Riley completed the work at first base Well done Luke in his first ever game
Looking forward to our next battle and confrontation with a twilight game

Sturt 16 defeated Southern Districts 9

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulf)
We came up against a good left handed pitcher for West Torrens who threw no walks in his 2 innings on the mound. Our team, on the other hand, struggled early as our pitchers found the strike zone difficult to find and our batters found hits tough to get! The boys, however, kept after em, leaving the bases loaded in the last inning of a game we lost 12-6.

There were some positive signs as Braydon Richardson, our youngest lad at 8, had a nice line drive hit and made a good stop in left field, as well. Henry Wood did a fine job catching in his first game behind the plate and Jack Murphy had a hit in his one at bat. Jack's hit was his first right handed as he's been hitting left handed prior to yesterdays game! Harry Tomlian recorded 2 hits, also.

Despite the result the boys are showing good improvement. This week we'll focus on batting while also giving our up and coming pitchers a chance to throw more on the sidelines. We have discovered a couple of the boys are good pitchers who throw lots of strikes. It's now a matter of finding others who can consistently put the ball over the plate. We are a good example of work in progress.

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Andrew Lightner)
Team Sponsor: Kensington Financial Services

The Saints enjoyed an exciting come from behind victory today over Southern District, 14-13. After a slow start in the first two innings, the Saints were down 9-4. But good discipline at the plate and an inning of shutout pitching from Zack Evreniadis keyed the great comeback. Key hitters today included Ethan Bachert, Jack Bolingbroke and Austin Lightner. Matt Wood had a critical hit in the bottom of the 4th to help get the rally started. Fraser Crameri scored three runs including the winning run. Sam Kazmer did an excellent job behind the plate the entire game. Congrats for a superb victory.

After setting ourselves for a big day against Woodville and needing to see some results for all the hard work we have been putting in, the boys executed very well.

TJ put in another stellar effort and never gave Woodville a sniff. We piled on 7 runs in the first 3 innings but to Woodville's credit they held us to only 1 run for the balance of the match. This was a slightly disappointing aspect of the match on the weekend as we seemed to go to sleep offensively. When we have an advantage like that we need to push for further runs as percentage may be the difference come finals time for a side like ours.

Angus Roeger continues to impress this season with 3 hits and looks like he is ready to step up at this level.

A big welcome to Jakub Hatjmar to Sturt. He is a very good middle infielder and has recently signed a professional contract with the Minnesota Twins organisation. He is worth watching!

A couple more big games this week which we need to stay switched on for to keep the wins tallying up!

Hits - Roeger 3, Winter 2, Hatjmar 2, Turner, Adkins, Stokes, Passmore.

A fantastic team effort from the boys on the weekend led to a 11-0 win over Woodville. Dale Martens pitched well for 6 innings of shut out baseball and Jamie Knuckey and Tom Faehse picked up 3 hits each.

The boys played errorless baseball which is fantastic to watch. Keep up the good work boys as it sets the tone for the A grade and also keeps the pressure on the players in front of you!

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)

A great win by the boys 8-5 over Adelaide. With batting not being our strong point over the last few years it was great to get 13 safe hits. Ben Packer had a day out going 3 for with some real stingers. Will Frogley had a massive day turning 2 solo double plays and going 2 for 5. Takashi had a good day as well getting 2 safe hits. Welcome back to Pete Turners bat he hit to ball nicely unlucky to get just the one safe hit and also made a couple of nice plays at 3rd. Considering the conditions at home plate Ryan Mattschoss did an outstanding job behind the dish.

As a team we are getting in good winning positions and not going on with it and letting teams back in the game , we need to get that hunger for more and really killing sides off. Again great job, graet attitude thanx guys.

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)
We had our first game this week at home against Adelaide but unfortunately went down 5-3. This I think was an emotional game for all of us and the supporters as it was the first one without T.C but we still enjoyed ourselves even with the result. We had two home runs this week but as usual no one on base to add to our score when Barry and Rodney hit them. Some great plays on the infield on great catches from the outfield which helped us keep Adelaide to only 5 runs. Barry again did the job on the mound for the 7 innings. This is a strong team both on the field and off and at the end of the season I'm sure we will be there to play some finals.

Saints v Henley & Grange 18-9.

A great moral booster for the team after losses in the 1st 2 games of the season. Whilst bat to ball seemed to be at a premium - we did have some great hits but walks were in the majority - we got on base & at the bottom of the 1st innings, were 9-0 up. H & G closed the gap at the top of the 2nd with an 8 run innings & that's where we kept them. Bottom of the 2nd, another 9 runs for Saints & then into the top of the 3rd for H & G for 1 - & then time & game was called.

With the team boosted by inclusion of William Brennan, Sam Hollis & Ben Papps, we (I) now feel more comfortable with "reserves" & I think that this was reflected in the way that everyone played. Whilst there were some great plays during the game, I think everyone deserves a well done for a great result.
Hopefully, it's the sign of things to come.

A great win to the boys on the weekend 20-0 after 4 digs. The side we played wern't very good but to the lads credit the finished the game off ,we knew we had to do our own thing and that they did.The boys rarely saw a strike but when they did they pounced and they smashed the ball to all parts of Flinders. The boys managed with minimal chances 12 safe hits which included 6 doubles, 1 triple and 1 home run. Bradley Trembath caught a magnificent game and is possibley the best blocker I have ever seen in a junior catcher but his game didn't finish there he also managed 4 for 4 as the lead off hitter which included 1 double. Another player who had a huge day was Matt MacBeth who went 3 for 3 with a walk. Matt hit a double,a triple and a sensational Home Run, his second for the year. Jordan Wayne pitched a good game not allowing a hit for 3 innings. All the kids had a great day all contributed to the win.A great job considering the opposition, we can only do what we can do. Well played boys if there is no atmosphere we have to create our own.

SAINTS 6, DREW KENSINGTON 6

What was another cold and windy day for the spectators turned out to be a well fought out draw in the end.

The boys struggled a little at first watching too many strikes, but with a little more aggression in the batters box, the hits started to come. I think the boys now know once you get runners on then you can start to make things happen. We started putting pressure on their pitcher with aggressive base running, giving our hitters an opportunity which they grabbed and started bringing in the runs. We were 6-2 down when our bats started to kick in and we then started to manufacture a few runs which turned out to be very important. We made a few fielding errors but we will learn from them, but to the boys credit they kept their chins up and kept fighting hard.

A special mention to Jack Colmer who made a great comeback for us at shortstop and picked up 2 very important hits for the team when we needed them late in the game.

To all the boys, well done and start looking forward to this weeks challenge.

A one run win in the last vs Glenelg 12-11

We got off to a shaky start with some poor fielding and decision making which we must work on at practice (should we get a full squad there)

However, our batting and a change of opposition pitchers got us back in the game late

Jesse batted strongly for 2 good hits, Matt threw strikes without a lot of luck and back up from the field, Hamish had some good plays at shortstop and Tyler worked hard behind the dish.
Will got his first chance in a game to be equalising run and everyone showed good composure at the end to pick the right pitches to swing at

A confidence boosting win but with still a lot of work to do !

Little League 1-Sturt (Coach: Kris McArdle)

Sturt 11 vs Glenelg 6

Another great win, all the boys played well. Runs where hard to come by early in the game as Glenelgs first pitcher was throwing bullets but we managed to get 2 runs through patient batting and good base running. We then hit the next pitcher around the park which opened up the game. Henry Brennen started strong on the mound holding Glenelg for two digs with strike outs. Tyler Lunnon finished off the pitching and holding off a fighting Glenelg, excellent job Tyler for the second week in a row. We were all happy to see Brett Colmer back with the team also contributing with a solid game and good catch at third base. Awesome job Guys!!!

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulf)
The boys celebrated teammate Jackson Blanks 9th birthday in style with a 16-6 win against Southern Districts. It didn't look good early when the Hawks got us for 3 outs after only 4 batters and went on to score 3 runs of their own in the bottom half of that inning.

We scored 2 runs in the 2nd to get within 1. Things really changed when Brodie MacBeth came in to pitch as 67% of his pitches were strikes. He ended up with 8 strikeouts in his 3 innings. William Hill did a fine job catching the entire game. A few walks and some timely hitting by our boys then opened the game up for us. Battings highlights included Brodie's 3 hits and Tyson Ottaway picking up 2 of his own and looking better each week. The hardest hit ball of the day, however, was a foul ball smash by Henry Wood that almost knocked out our runner and 3rd base coach! Fortunately, I coach 1st base!

While we'd need tennis rackets to reach a few of the high pitches we swung at I will continue to encourage the aggressive batting many of the boys are showing. They can and will learn the strike zone through practice and experience but aggressive batting is a mindset.

Chris Wulff was disappointed when we failed to sing the Club song last week and then, unfortunately, had to leave this game early so he missed out again. Like we sang happy birthday to Jackson with gusto before the game we sang the Club song with great gusto and energy afterward. This is a tradition we will carry on after each win, so hang in there Chris, hopefully we'll get another chance soon!

Little League 2-Saints (Coach: Andrew Lightner)
Team Sponsor: Kensington Financial Services

The Saints drew to an 8-8 draw with Kensington this week. We lead for most of the game but couldn't hold off the Cardinals in the bottom of the fourth, when they scored three runs to tie up the score. Our lead batter, Austin Lightner, managed to score three runs and throw one inning of shutout ball. Zac Gawen also did well running the bases and scored twice. Patrick Ryan was instrumental in all three outs in the third inning, and Mitchell Lightbody was stellar behind the plate all game.

Tribute to Trevor Colmer RIP and Week 4 Results

I write to you this week as a Club in total shock as our Club comes to terms with the untimely passing of our Division 5 Coach Trevor Colmer.

On behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club I would like to extend our sincere sympathy to his wife Kerryn and their two children Brett, who plays in Little League and Jack who plays in our Under 14 team. Our thoughts are also with Trevor's brother Mark, who is a former President of our club.

I would like to acknowledge our Division 5 team who assisted Trevor and his family on Saturday and publically thank the Goodwood Baseball Club for the kindness to our team. I have written to the Goodwood Baseball Club on behalf of us all to thank them.

I am dedicating this edition of our weekly results to the memory of Trevor Colmer. Trevor was a Life Member of our club and has been a junior coach for many years.

The Sturt Baseball Club is a tightly knit club and in fact behaves very much like a large family. To loose Trevor in such tragic circumstances at such a young age has deeply effected everyone in the club who knew him.

The support of our club members for each other is also very important at this time and I have been very moved by how well everybody is doing their bit to support each other and Trevor's family. There is no doubt we are all doing it very tough, but I have confidence that the wonderful strength displayed by you all, will help us get through!

On Sunday we had our first game back at Norman Reserve since the erection of the nets and it was great to see one of the biggest crowds we have seen at the Club in years in attendance! Please come again to support our Division 1 Team!

Special guests included Nicole Cornes, the Mayor of Mitcham and his wife and Councillor Richard Warren. It was also great to see local residents Howard and Anne Bone together with Mark Douglas in attendance. The Sturt Baseball Club looks forward to working collaboratively with local residents and the council in the future. Before the game on Sunday we paid our respects through a minute's silence to the following club legends:

With the prospect of a big Saints crowd and an emotional tribute to some club legends, the boys were looking forward to putting in a big effort against Souths to notch up the first win.

TJ Stanton settled in very nicely and unfortunately some untimely errors in the third inning put us behind 1-3 in the 4th.

Clutch hitting from Tom Winter and Jimmy Passmore helped us square proceedings at 3-3 and we were unlucky not to go ahead in that inning.

With some great defence played from both sides, the game went to extra innings where Dale Martens unfortunately couldn't finish off TJs great work and a 3 run home run for the Hawks doing the damage. Saints lost another heartbreaker 6-4.

The groups attitude at the moment is excellent. Particular mention to all the guys that supported us on the bench - you do make a difference. We need a win to help prove that hard work pays off. We will enter the game against Woodville this week knowing we are mentally and physically prepared to play at our best. Keep up the good work boys.

A poor start to this game put the Saints behind the 8 ball immediately but to there credit they didnt roll over. Telmo came in and held Souths down and allowed us to get some momentum offensively. Congratulations to Daniel Lee with three hits including his first senior home run. The boys fought this game out to eventually lose to a talented Souths lineup 8-5. The B grade is certainly performing better than this scoreline suggests and will be around the mark come finals time.

Always a great test East Torrens are always around the place come finals time , so we knew this was a team we wanted to beat to show we were contenders. The plan was working well 11-5 up only to lose 11-17.

A great job on the hill again by Ben Packer who threw a solid 3 digs & picked upa hit.The boys were again great in the field with an errorless game.Seiya did a great effort 2 for 2 with a walk ,Sam Bates also 2 for 2 with a walk,Will Frogley 2 for 2 and an outstanding job at short stop taking a superhuman catch, Rick 2 for 3. We picked up 10 hits another great job with the timber. I know it is hard batting against metal but we just have to worry about our game , their crappy hits WILL stop dropping in,our time will come and the victories will be all that much sweeter, heads up.

Division 4 (Coach: Stuart Crutchley)
In the first game of the season back at beloved Norman Reserve div 4 pulled off our fourth win for the season. Things weren't looking promising at the top of the third innings with Northern Districts leading 6 - 0 however we fought back and went into the fourth tied. North's snuck ahead again mostly thanks to Matt Frazer's second home run of the day the lead changing to 10 - 6. Showing true strength Brenton Slee started off a five run rally in the fifth innings providing an 11 - 10 win. Honourable mentions go to Jared Holland who batted 750 for a second week in a row and David Carter also batting 750 and hitting the fence on the full twice - hopefully the next one will go over!!

On a more somber note Div 4 would like to express our sincere condolences to our team mate Mark and the entire Colmer family on the tragic loss of Trevor Colmer. Our thoughts are especially with Kerryn, Jack and Brett at this time

Tom Teague continued his great form with the bat going 3 for 3 with a home run. Tom and Zac Harnett pitched well in very tough conditions.

The Under 16.1’s extend their deepest sympathy to the Colmer family following the sudden loss of Trevor on Saturday.

SAINTS 7, ADELAIDE 7

Our game on Sunday started off with a bang scoring 5 runs from 5 hits in the 1st innings, I thought we were back on track after a very poor warm up but that wasn’t to be. We only picked up 2 more hits for the rest of the game while Adelaide picked up 4 scattered hits for 1 earned run while we gave them 6 un-earned runs to draw the game.

We just didn’t turn up to play.

Hopefully the boys will realise they need to focus and apply themselves from their warm up to the end of a game so everyone can enjoy their baseball.

Thanks to the parents who braved the conditions and sorry for the performance.

Sturt 13 defeated Glenelg 11

It was a cold and windy day down at glenelg on Sunday morning with all parent crammed into the dugout to keep work. We started the game with only 8 due to circumstances but this didn't worry Tyler lunnon who pitch a sensational game holding Glenelg to only 3 runs in the first 3 digs. Tylers second innings was one of the best inning I have seen at this level for a while striking out 3 consecutive batters and not throwing one ball. All boys continued to bat well , special mentions to Ryan Cross and Jordan McArdle both are batting very well and getting hit at the right time of the game. Glenelg came back in the forth dig to make the score 9-7 at the end of the fourth dig , but our boys to their credit scored 4 runs to put the game out of their reach. Guys keep up the good work we are now sitting second on the ladder, need to work hard on our fielding , foot work and throwing during the week.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulf)
In cold and windy conditions the boys pulled out a 13-9 win against the Cardinals. Going into the bottom of the last inning tied 9-9 we scored 4 runs to win the game. Everyone was excited about the win but none more than the coach as there was solid improvement from the previous week, particularly in batting. Aggressive batting is what we want from the boys and 17 hits is an example of just that.

Highlights include Nathan Ilic and William Hill getting 3 hits each, Henry Brennan's triple scoring 2 runs in the last inning, and 4 others picking up 2 hits each. In his first pitching assignment Hayden Emery was outstanding, pitching 3 innings and giving up no walks, quite an achievement. Brodie MacBeth also pitched and after a few walks to begin with settled down to strike out 3 in his one inning. Other highlights include Jack Murphy getting a hit in his first at bat for the year and the good batting of Henry Wood as well as his enthusiasm and support for his teammates. Tyson Ottaway, keen to play everywhere (at the same time!) did well, particularly at 2nd base. All in all, a great game by the boys.

A big thank you to Will Brennan for kindly offering to keep score for us.

Saints vs. Southern District, 12-4

Despite threatening weather and high winds, the Saints came on strong this week with great pitching and good discipline at the plate. Zach Evreniadis (Everready) threw two innings of shut out ball with 5 strikeouts. Sam Kazmer recovered from a sore thumb last week to follow up with two very good innings of pitching. The entire team did well at the plate, waiting for good pitches and putting the ball in play when they could. They were shining on the field as well… Jack Bolingbroke made a great outfield catch to end the second inning. In the third, Sam Kazmer’s fielding was excellent, making the throw to Austin Lightner for an out at first base, and later getting the lead runner out at third with a great throw to Fraser Crameri (who made a great tag). Great game guys.

Little League 2-Blues (Coach:Derek Matthewman)

Our 3rd match of the year started slowly for us, we opened with Zachary Lunnon as pitcher who Goodwood was able to get five runs off we then went up to bat scoring 4 to reply. Charlie came in to pitch and managed three up three down for the first innings with some fast pitches. Our next innings added two to our score. A quick two runs from Goodwood in the third left us with some catching up to do. We replied with four runs that were aggressively earned. And managed to get Goodwood out for no score to help. Unfortunately with some good pitching and fielding from Goodwood, let us down in the 4th with three up three down to leave Goodwood three runs behind. With Reuben coming up to pitch to close out the game, Goodwood were able to match our score and snag a draw 10 all. A very close game with a few sleepy plays from the blues.

Another heart breaking loss to our Division 1 side. I know the whole club respects the work that Tony has done with this team over the pre-season and we are sure that they are very close to their first win; hang in their boys!

I am very pleased to advise that the nets are going up on Norman Reserve, even in the rain today they were out there working with great progress visible!! We have approval to play senior games on the ground from this coming Saturday.

We are planning some special events to celebrate our return to our home ground next Sunday which will include the observing of a minutes silence for a number of our club members who have passed away since last season. We are aware of the following four families who have been effected in this way; Catt, Wood, Tredrea and Franke. If any other member of our club has passed away since the end of the last season can you let me know by sending an email to Phil Robinson or calling me on 0417 806 765.

I will write to you again before the end of the week to update on the events we have planned for next Sunday.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors for coming on board this season. As well as being our A Grade Coach Tony Catt has been extremely busy chasing up sponsors. I have now updated our webpages to showcase all of our wonderful sponsors. You will also note that we have a number of team sponsors as well. If you would like to be sponsor please email Tony Catt or call him on 0412 244 327.

Before the game we discussed the need to become more competitive against sides such as Glenelg and in the main we proved we can match it with the top 4 sides. A good solid start to the game saw the Saints lead 3-2 in the 3rd inning however some very lack lustre pitching saw too many walks and HPB thrown and we fell behind 9-3 in the 5th. To the teams credit, they didnt rollover and fought the game out well only to fall short in the 9th innings with runners in scoring positions and lose 9-8.
Particular mentions need to go to Tom Winter who pitched brilliantly and picked up 3 hits. Angus Roeger is starting to show what he is capable of at this level and batted very well.
Losing is still not acceptable and we all need to go back to the drawing board to improve certain areas of our game to make sure we notch up the first win very, very soon.

Last year this team defeated us 27-0,Saturday they beat us 11-8 great job great result against a well drilled smart baseball team.Having said that i feel we had our chances and i think we should have won.A sensational effort behind the dish by Ryan Mattschoss who caught a great game and went 2for 3 with a walk and a double.Dale added to his 3 game hitting streak with another hit.A great game Toby Cantrill who went 3-3, well done Toby your game is coming along nicely.Hits also to Elliot Cameron,& Ben Packer.A great job in the field again with just the 1 error .The only thing that let us dowm was pitch selection in vital times, something we really need to work on .Good start Ben Packer on the hill , hit your spots beautufully , cant pitch or field chinkers, great job Div3 keep up the great attitude.

Victory over Southern Districts continued Div 4 winning streak under this weeks "guest coach" Mark Colmer. Leading by 3 runs as we headed into the seventh innings Brenton Slee started off an 8 run rally which saw the Saints win 17 - 7. Jared Holland proved invaluable with 110 pitches over 7 innings, batting 750 and Ian Evans continued to show true form with a couple of three base hits to leftfield and some impressive fielding at shortstop. Stuart Crutchley demonstrated what an all rounder he is with a suprise appearance behind the plate however play of the day went to centerfield David Carter throwing out a runner at home plate.

Division 5 (Coach: Trevor Colmer)
Sturt 4 - Dodgers 4

A very evenly matched game as evidenced by the scoreline. We started shaky being 4 -0 down after the first but managed to claw our way back into the game. Barry Lunnon dominated on the mound for 6 of the 7 innings played. He also dominated with the bat with 2 long bombs over right field fence to square the game up. Injuries are already playing a part in this aging squad, Rod Angel in only his second game pulled up lame with a pulled driver and Chris Small as always is complaining about his calf. Good to see Ben Colyer back in the line up adding depth to our batting as well as youth. Our last ace up the sleeve Brett MacBeth put in an appearance albeit from the sidelines, but I can see the hunger is there to fight his way back into the team. Thanks to Dean Franke for umpiring this weekend as part of our umpiring rotation.

This weeks training gym sessions will concentrate on hydro aerobics and pilates. Our field training will be focussed around ball velocity/rotation mechanics, which should freshen us up nicely, ready for next weekend.

Division 6 (Coach: Jaye Johnson)
Well div 6 travelled to Goodwood on Saturday.
We had Ben Leicht start on the mound and we got rattled early but that is no problem.
We already had a good start, but Goodwood started to get in front.
After a few tough innings we were 11 -3 down and the boys were asked to get the bats going and we the boys came thru with 5 runs and we had them on the run. Goodwood came up and made 1 run in the bottom of the 6th to make it 12-8, so this coach thought since the game started late and it was not even 2:25 yet I thought we would get another bat, but to no. Game called and Div 6 went down for a our first defeat.
We know were we went wrong and during our training this Wednesday we will work even harder to go out next Saturday and try to get win 2 under our belts.
Thanks to Trev Hendry who came out and finished out the game on the mound and held Goodwood to only 1 run.
And yes that was a great double play from Mike Anderson to Jaye!
And a special thanks to Greg Boundy for the effort he did for us on Saturday also all of div 6 players will have that position during the season.
As of yet we do not know where are playing this coming Saturday so stay tuned.

We played Woodville for our first home game of the season at Flinders on Sunday and had a great crowd come out and watch what was another good win for us with the final score line reading 14-6. Both Jayke Wayne and Jai Redigolo pitch well and only giving up one safe hit to Woodville while again we were aggressive with the bat ourselves collecting seven safe hits. Woodville scored 2 in the first and 4 in the third while we scored one in the first 7 in the second and 6 in the third with the game finishing at the middle of the fourth. Jarrad Small started of behind the plate and did a good job and William Brennan came in to replace him and finish the game. The infield was tight all day with some great outs from Adam Hofmeyer and Ben Daws. The most pleasing thing for me at present is to see that the boys are having fun with their baseball. As a group they are all smiling and laughing while playing. We also welcomed Jackson Mignanelli to the team and he had a good day with one safe hit and some good outs at first. Thanks to Brett Mulryan who filled in for the other under 16 div 2 side but came out and sat on the bench all day with us. He was very vocal all day. We still need to work on a few things to enjoy our game days even more.

Surt Saints v Goodwood 21/10/07 at Flinders 2-13 loss.
A disppointing result considering the enthusiasm of the team at the start of the game. 2 good innings matching Goodwood ball for ball but that's where it stopped. A fantastic home run from Simon Evreniadis in the 1st (which brought our rain today) scored our 2 runs. 3rd innings & the pre-game enthusiasm started to waver with Goodwood scoring 3-0. Into the 4th & they sealed our fate with an 8-0 innings. Our in-field play basically fell away in this last innings such that Goodwood quite "comfortably" scored those runs. Whilst we did have a few good plays in the field across the game, a couple by John Hood at short-stop & 2 great catches by Simon Evreniadis at 1st & Tommy Matthewman at RF, unfortunately, we did not have enough to slow Goodwood's "advance". Better luck next game!

Score line Sturt 13 Glenelg 0
Safe hits : Wood and Macbeth 2 from 2 at bats each : Wayne 2 from 3 at bats : Trembath 1

A less than impressive performance by the Sturt boys yesterday saw us account for a far weaker opponent in Glenelg. After getting off to a flyer of a start with seven runs in the first innings the boys then "sat back" and were only able to score another 6 runs in the remaining four innings.

Most disappointing was the lack of hits from the group, with only 7 safe hits coming from 4 batters. (We will do a lot of hitting at practice this week boys!) While the difference in ability between the two sides was again huge the lack of discipline and urgency shown by the boys was a real wake up call to me.

That's enough on the negative aspects.
Matt Macbeth pitched a great game in his first "hit out" of the season and Harrison Wood again did a great job catching in the first half of the game before being replaced in the line up as part of our player rotations. Jordan Wayne did a good job in relief and also was one of three batters to get 2 hits for the day.
Whilst it is hard to concentrate in such games it is part of the learning process as a sportsman to still be able to perform under such conditions.

For now we stand 2 wins from 2, but with the likelihood of the competition changing to 2 divisions, we will need to train hard and improve our concentration and participation when batting and fielding to be a real threat to the other sides.

Work hard boys!

Remember the team rules we have so far:
1) Don't be late ( you must be at the ground ready to go 1 hour before start time)
2) Leadoff hitter must always take the first pitch !

Game 2 and another win on the board, we came up against Goodwood for a second week and the boys had to work a lot harder for the 11 – 3 win.

Sam Roberts did a great job on the mound for us and James Snelgrove did a good job in relief. Jack Colmer played well at shortstop with a couple of good plays and picked up a couple of nice hits to go with it, Harrison Lightbody had a good game behind the plate and swung the bat well.

All the boys are playing in a really positive way which is great to see and they have gelled really well as a team so early in the season.

Keep up the good work guys and enjoy your baseball.

Highlights - Henry - home run, Tyler caught well and hit hard
Jesse had 2 nice hits, Lazar took some nice catches at centrefield and Matt held down the opposition in relief A late game rally saw us claw back a little respectability

Sunday 14th of October Sturt 16 vs Southern Districts 8 -- Win
Great start to the season with a win at home. Everyone played well with some good batting display. Hugh effort on the mound by Brett Colmer striking out 8 of the fist possible 9 outs. Lewis Brideson closed the game of well. Ryan Cross was the ball magnet getting hit twice by a pitched ball. Good job guys. Sunday 21st of October Sturt 11 vs Kensington 11 -- Draw
We started the game in a flurry of runs getting 5 runs in our first at bat with all boys hitting the ball. Again Brett Colmer started on the mound and another big effort holding Kensington to 3 run over 3 digs. We continued to hit the ball well , some unlucky caught line drive which turned into doubles but everything was looking good at 11 - 8 with 3mins left which was just enough time to start another dig. Unfortunately this is where the errors creeped into the game and Kensington managed to score the 3 runs to tie it all up. We didn't manage to get a score in the final dig. bad luck boys we will take some good lessons out of this game. I am very happy with every ones attitude and aggressive batting style , we will be working on our glove work during the week. Another good effort , let get em next week.

Little League 2-Sturt (Coach: Don Wulf)
In what was, for most of the boys, their first game of baseball they battled to the very end to earn a draw. It appeared we had little chance against Kensington's good left handed pitcher as we fell behind early, but at the end it was all Kensington could do to get the draw. Our boys will improve in pitching, fielding, and hitting, but if what I saw today continues throughout the year we have a group of young boys who play for each other and showed a strong will to win and not give up.
There were many highlights, such as William Hill's batting and baserunning, Stuart Brennan's clutch pitching, Brodie MacBeth and Hayden Emery doing well while sharing the catching duties, and Harry Tomlian and Hayden completing a double play. Also, our newest players, Nathan Ilic and Chris Wulff, both picked up hits in their first at bats. Well done to all of the boys for the way they battled the game out.

Saints vs Goodwood 3-5

It was a great first game from the boys in trying conditions. The boys fought hard all day against some very fast pitching which the boys finally got on top of but it was too late in the game. We had some great plays from Zac G and Fraser and some good hitting from Ethan, Patrick and Jordan McArdle (thanks Jordan for helping us out today). Also a great job on the mound was done by Mitchell and Zac E. Well done on the great work today keep it up. Thanks to all the families for all their help.

All in all, apart from the loss, a good starting game from the team!

Our 2nd match of the year started strongly for us, we opened with Zachary Lunnon as pitcher and held West Torrens to 0 for the first innings while we managed 3 runs. WT had a rally scoring 5 in the second. Charlie came in to pitch and managed three up three down for the following two innings with some fantastic accurate fast pitches. Our next run on the board came in the bottom of the forth. We went into the top of last innings, down 6 t o5. W.T. first batter was struck out and Reuben caught the 2nd batter at shortstop. WT then scored the first home run of the day over right field; the last batter was out with a throw from shortstop. So bottom of the 5th 2 runs down and the pressure was on. Lachlan hit to shortstop and Rupert was given a walk, both managed to get home with some aggressive running. First time player Samuel managed to hold his nerve and walked to first, he stole second and when Scott hit the ball thru 2nd Sam ran to 3rd. Reuben came up to bat we were now level with 7 all, Reuben smashed the ball for a homerun over leftfield to bring us home with 2 runs to spare. A very close game with the Blues deserving the second win of the Year.

The Sturt Baseball Club had a great weekend of success!! On Saturday, Divisions 3-6 all had wins and on Sunday all teams had a win except for our Division 1 and U16/2 - Saints team. There were very promising signs for our Division 1 team, with our import pitcher T J Stanton doing some great work for the team. On behalf of the Sturt Baseball Club I would like to welcome T J to our club and hope that he has an enjoyable season with us. Please make yourself known to him when at the club and make him feel welcome! I have reluctantly advised the SABL to reschedule our Senior games for this Sunday to alternative grounds whilst we await the fences being completed. I hope to give you more promising news on this matter in the near future.

Please remember that all the results from the games are available online on the front page of our website or you can check out your own teams results by clicking on teams on the top menu and then click on either senior or junior and then click on results.

Division 1 (Coach: Tony Catt)
After outplaying Golden Grove for 8 innings to lead 4-0, it was particularly disappointing to lose in the last inning 5-4. TJ Stanton had his first start for the club and was exceptional. He pitched 7 and 1/3 shutout innings and will be a major asset to this team. Unfortunately the relief pitchers couldnt capitalise on this great work. I was much happier with the hitting this week. The boys applied themselves in the box and got into good hitting counts. We were particularly unlucky not to have scored 8 or 10 runs.

But, this is what baseball is all about. This team must learn to cope with pressure situations and learn that close enough is NOT good enough. Train harder, train with more purpose, train knowing that we all dont want to go through the torture of losing another game like that one this season. The hard work will pay off.

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)
Pat Burns led this game from the front, striking out 10 Golden Grove hitters in 4 innings. His form is exceptional at the moment and the club is very proud of the way he is performing. The team scored all its runs in the 4th inning with some excellent hit and run plays. This type of execution is so important to win at this level. Unfortunately, the boys made the game closer than it should have been but still ran out victors 8-7. Well done.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
A great team effort resulted in a great win 9-4 against Golden Grove.I told the boys we needed to switch on from the word go after last week and we did,we had 3 hits in the first and ended up with 12 hits for the day which resulted in 9 runs. The top 5 in the lineup up all had 2 hits each ,they were Will Frogley,Sam Bates,Dale Martens ,Rick & Ryan Mattschoss.Jackson Brebner-Russ & Pete Turner both got singles.Defensively just the 1 error ,great effort boys.Another double turned up the middle by Will & Pete.Player of the day was easily Dale Martens with a great 4 innings pitched to set up the win.Good job boys .

Division 4 (Coach: Stuart Crutchley)
Despite a lack of preseason training Div 4 pulled out another impressive win - 18-0 over Goodwood. Veteran Mark Colmer displayed his trophy winning form, batting 600 and holding Goodwood to just 3 hits over 5 innings. Norm Sluga, another seasoned player smacked the ball out of the park in a fourth innings rally which saw Sturt score 14 runs. Last week Div 4 had the pleasure of welcoming back Simon Gooley along with a guest appearance by his old mate Ashley Evans and that pleasure continued this week with the return of former Div 1 player Ian Evans. With such a wealth of experience Div 4 looks forward to a promising season.

Division 5 (Coach: Trevor Colmer)
Div 5 - Sturt 15 def Kensington 8

A good first up win with the new look side. During the off season we have recruited strongly with an empahasis on team balance along with a solid pre season training regime, the boys look keen to have a big season. Rick Trembath did the job on the mound holding Kensington at bay for most of the game. We picked up something like 18 hits for the day with a 10 run final innings to see us home easily. Training will again be solid this week to maintain our peek fitness levels, concentrating on the bio mechanics of eye/hand co-ordination.

Under 18 (Coach: Darren Stewart)
Congratulations to the under 18’s on their season starting win. The game started well with early runs on the board but became worrying as Golden Grove took the lead soon after . During the middle innings we left loaded bases on twice which cost us some valuable runs. But to the boys credit they came back hitting strongly to regain the lead, triples to Daniel Lee and Tom Kenny. A feature of the boys’ game was their aggressive base running and confidence to make important plays. Well done to Toby Cantrill and Ally Young on the mound, they were both strong all day. Also to Michael Robinson behind the plate for his great blocking and pick ups. The day was a whole team effort with all players contributing to a strong win.

Sturt 10 d GGCD 4

Under 16/2 Sturt (Coach: Chris Small)
What a great way to start the 2007-2008 season with a win against GGCD at their home ground. Sturt won 10 - 4. The boys did a great job both in the field and with the bat. We started with 3 runs in the first innings and 3 up 3 down in the field. We then scored 2 in the third and 5 in the fourth and with only on hick-up in the third allowing GGCD to score 4 runs we were in front all day. We started with Jai Redigolo on the mound and after 63 pitches Jayke Wayne relieved him to throw 52 pitches. We gave away 9 walks and had 8 strike outs and GGCD did not get one safe hit for the day. We had 29 in-total at bats for 9 safe hits, 10 walks and 9 strike outs. All the boy had a go with the bats which was great to see in the first game. They were tight in the field and had plenty of talk. Well done boys see you at Training Wednesday night at the Club.

Safe hits - 2 to Ben Daws, Jarrad Small and Jai Redigolo and 1 safe hit to Jayke Wayne, Joshua Masters and Ben Young.

Under 16/2 Saints (Coach: Richard Edwards)
A nervous start to the season for the team! Whilst we went down 10(12)-2, all of the team played extremely well with some great work on the mound from both Simon Evreniadis & Josh Grantham. There were 2 excellent double plays between 2nd & 1st bases, the 1st instigated by John Hood, our 2nd base person & the 2nd by David Liljegren after a centre field catch. Getting on to bases was at a premium with 2 very fast pitchers on the WT team & whilst we did manage to get a number round to 3rd, only 2 got home - & they were our 2 pitchers, Simon & Josh. Some great catching by Sean Lamonby kept the WT runners honest & on their bases!

All in all, apart from the loss, a good starting game from the team!

Under 14 Saints (Coach: Craig Gillepsie)
We had a good start to the season with a 24 – 2 win over Goodwood. Although the opposition was very average, our boys stayed focused on the game which was great to see. Dylan Holt and Sam Roberts did a good job on the mound for us and all our hitters were great with the bat and some good aggressive base running once on base.

Good start to the season and there was plenty of family support for the team which was fantastic.

Keep up the good work boys and Thankyou to the families for your support.

Division 1 (Coach: Tony Catt)
After a promising pre-season build up, the Saints faced an impressive Southern Districts outfit only to lose 10-0 and really go down without a whimper. Every player can improve on this performance and will need to ahead of another away game against Golden Grove this weekend.

Special welcome to Dane Adkins who joins our club from Mt Gambier. He will be a major asset to our club. Welcome back to Dale Martens , who returns to Adelaide after 4 years in sunny Queensland. His experience on the mound will be very useful and he will take on the pitching coaching role.

We will also welcome Travis Stanton (TJ) to the club this week. TJ arrives from Florida this Thursday to play this season for us. TJ is a 6 foot 4, right hand pitcher who will be an excellent addition to our pitching rotation. TJ has been playing in a very strong Canadian League. Please make him feel welcome.

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)
The first 4 innings of this game were very tight and the Saints were well led on the mound by Pat Burns and we were 0-0. A couple of timely hits to Souths scored 4 runs but the Saints fought on gamely to eventually lose 7-2. This was an excellent first up effort and the boys should take a lot of heart from this result. Ben Packer was impressive in relief and Tim Boundy led the way with the bat. The hard work we are putting in on the training track will eventually pay off.

Division 3 (Coach: Rick Mitchell)
With the team we had on paper i was extremely confident coming into this weeks game. Even though we lost 6-5 there were some good signs.Welcome back to Dale Martens who after a very brief preperation pitched 3 solid innings and went 2 for 3 with the bat.Safe hits also went to Wil Frogley with a double ,Matt Harris,Michael Robinson and Rick. We waited too long to begin batting ,the first 4 innings 16 plate appearances for 12 outs ,too many cheap outs. When we finally woke up the bats we scored 5 runs in the last 2 digs with 5 hits.Defensively it was an errorless game, what a difference that makes, including a fine double play through Will and Pete Turner. It was good to finally have bench players in Div 3 thanks to Jackson B-Russ & Dakota Mitchell who sat all day for no game time. With the positives out of last weeks game we saw bring on next week.

Division 4 (Coach: Stuart Crutchley)
