Sturt T-Ball Results

The Sturt Tee Ball U10 All-stars played their second round of the competition - at Kensington grounds on Sunday 10 Dec 06.
It's worth mentioning that all 12 played the Sturt mid year carnival from 9-11am on Sunday morning and the hot muggy conditions continued as they then played another 3 full games of Tee ball that afternoon between 1 and 5pm.... so it was a big, long, tough day and they did very well!
They won 2 (East Torrens and Southern Districts) and narrowly lost the 3rd game against Kensington keeping the competition very tight! Our next round is at Southern Districts on Feb 11th next year...

Division 1
We played Port Adelaide in a Saturday night twilight game. Final result was a 14- 6 loss. This game was a lot tighter than the score line suggested. We were leading 5-4 going into the 5th innings then Port's big bats took over. They scored 13 runs in only 3 innings due to playing their field very well. They have a lot of left handed batters and hit the ball well to the short fence in right field. We gave Rick Mitchell his first start in an A grade game and he battled away manfully for 6 innings then Jimmy Passmore took over for the last 2 innings. We knew for us to have a chance, we needed to play the game at our level so Rick was instructed to throw lots of off speed pitches, this worked perfectly for the first 3 or so innings, Port were consistently hitting fly balls to our outfielders and getting frustrated which is what we wanted. Eventually they woke to our plan and made adjustments and started to take over. Our hitters toiled away manfully, Tom Faehse and Angus Roeger both picked up 3 hits and all other players picked up at least 1 hit each

Twilight Result
Phew, what a relief. I thought it was never going to come but we finally got some reward for playing some pretty good baseball over the past month. Final score being a 15-4 win over East Torrens. Most aspects of our game were played very well, apart from 1 bad innings in the field where East Torrens scored all their 4 runs. Tom Winter pitched for us and for the second game straight did an outstanding job pitching the full 5 innings. Tim Boundy continues to impress catching and he is learning to run the game a lot better and at working out opposition hitter’s strengths and weaknesses. Our hitting last night was a real positive, Tom Brice returned to the line up and gave us the power in the number 4 spot picking up a 3 run home run and another 2 run double to close out the game. Tom Faehse has had a real purple patch lately picking up another 3 hits. Our team will get stronger over the coming weeks when Zac Stokes returns from his tonsil operation and Ben Bicknell continues to pick up the pace of the game. We can look forward with optimism to the 2nd half of the year where hopefully we can really become nuisance value to the teams trying to make the 6.

A poor effort against the top side. Sound pitching performances from Angus McKinnon and Toby Cantrill, were not supported in the field. It was pleasing to see the Sturt team generally keep a positive attitude and keep trying. It is this type of mental toughness that will help in close games. Safe hits to Sam Bates, Angus McKinnon and Zac Butler. Thank you to U16 player Toby Cantrill for helping out and also to Robyn Cantrill for once again scoring for the U18 team.

Under 16 Sturt
Under 16 Division 1 Sturt Another great team effort from the boys who are now playing excellent baseball. Everyone is chipping in and this resulted in a 19-2 defeat of Adelaide. Daniel Lee is getting stronger on the mound and Beau Pelgrim and Michael Robinson have really stepped it up with their batting.
We face a tough last game against Norths – lets get into Christmas undefeated!

Under 16 Saints
Well the wheels fell off! After three wins in a row, Saints were not able to extend the streak. Strong batting from the Reds and a big bag of mistakes from the Saints left us 9-5 down at the end of the game. There were flashes of good form and we know we had it in us to beat the Reds, we just couldn't get it all together on the day. Perhaps an early Saturday night before the next game guys?

Under 16 Blues
The Blues went down 10-6 to Port Adelaide on the weekend. We let ourselves down as only 1 of Port’s runs was earned. Jay lunnon knocked the cover off the ball all day, Fraser Goodes had 2 hits, Jake Borlace did a good job at second base filling in for Trent (how can I injure myself this week) Small. Haydn Pocock also hit the ball hard. We did some good things, cut down on our errors in the field overall, but made mistakes at critical times. We finally got a runner out after Zac left them in no man’s land off first base with his pick off move. That would be at least the fifth time he has accomplished that this year and we finally converted it into an out. Jayke Wayne did his usual workmanlike job on the mound for us, and Zac started well only to have trouble throwing strikes to their midgets at the bottom of the order. The boys were unlucky a bit at the plate with a few line drive and long ball outs. We know what we have to do to win a few of these tight games so chins up boys, we’ll put in the work and I’m sure we will have positive results in the New Year. Thanks to Sean Lamonby for filling out the lineup on the day, would welcome you back anytime.

Under 14/1 Saints
Under 14 Division 1 Saints This was a tough game to play and watch. We started with ten players but at the end of the first innings we where down to eight. Josh started pitching and throw well until he did his shoulder sitting him on the bench. Jack Colmer came in and relieved Josh and did the job like normal. By the end of the first bat we had Jarrad hit by a pitch ball and that was the end of his day. We also had Dylan Holt hit in the back by a pitched ball and that was him done unable to really lift his glove but he stayed in the game which was great. Bradley was solid behind the plate when he came in for Jarrad and Brett Mulryan finished of the pitching for us. GGCD were to strong on the day and they hit the ball well, unfortunately they hit to the outfield when we only had two outfielders and we had too many infield errors. The final score was 28 to 1.

Sturt 16- Adelaide 1
Another solid performance from the entire team with strong hitting and excellent defence. Harrison Lightbody threw his best game of the year giving nothing to the Adelaide hitters and had a total of 36 pitches for the entire game. Ryan Kazmer behind the plate continues to excel and I believe he has a future as a top line catcher (provided he learns to lift his elbow higher when throwing). It's very pleasing to see the boys stick to the task and focussing on the game even when the scoreline blows out.
This week's training is educational, watching Div 1 on Tuesday play a twilight game at the club.

Under 12/2 Saints
Sunday we played one of the best games we have played all year. Northern Districts was sitting second on the ladder and beating them proves we are good enough to beat any team in the competition. Henry Brennan pitch well and as always hit the ball hard. Max Geuhrer powerful batting also put us in a winning position, Jordan McArdle caught the whole game an pulled out a three base hit when the side really needed it. William Hill and Hayden Emery both made brilliant plays in the outfield , Hayden throwing the batter out at second from right field and William also throwing the runner out at second from left field; Darcy Cathro, Rupert Saundry and Zac Lunnon also fielded solid, this type of fielding will alway make it hard for the opposition to beat us. Jayden Trembath had another awesome game batting solid and fielding at second for the first half of the game and then finishing off on the mound. Not only did he play well but its his voice on the ground and his cool that helps all of us in the team perform well. Tyson Ottaway got himself a base hit off thier second pitcher who for under 12's was throwing gas, finally Lewis Brideson held the outfield together and also had a solid batting performance.
This has been a great start to the season and I am very proud with how the boys have gone about their baseball business , keep up the good effort and let go get East Torrens this week.

We played a double header against Adelaide on Sunday in a round where I fully believed we could and should win 2 games. Unfortunately we came up short in both games, losing game one 3 nil and game two 12-11 in a 10 innings game. Adelaide's senior players experience came through in the long run and gave them the tight wins. Game one was a very poor effort from us and the players were reminded of this after the game. You must come prepared to play every game and be prepared to bat to the conditions. This is something we didn't do and we were shown up for that. Our fielding in this first game also hurt us and cost us 2 of the 3 runs. Game two was the complete opposite, the bats came alive and all of a sudden, the enthusiasm returned. Tim Boundy and Daniel Turner both picked up 4 hits and every player in the side picked up at least 1 hit. Unfortunately for us, so did every Adelaide player. We were outhit in this game 25-22 so obviously the pitchers struggled. We were leading 11-7 coming into the late innings but as has happened now three times this year we didn't have the pitching depth and couldn't close out what should have been a well deserved win.

Sturt 4 lost to Woodville 10

Division 4
The 4's were down on numbers again this week but came up with a competitive lineup with the late inclusions of Scott Crutchley and President Tony to take on our arch rivals Woodville.
We got a pleasant surprise pre-game with the news that Ian Reval was playing Div 3 today and would not be confronting us. The boys got off to a flyer with Scott Crutchley latching on to a fly ball to left field which became a wind assisted three run home run in the first. We stayed on top all day and eventually ran out 12 - 5 winners on the back of a 5 for 5 day for Jamie Knuckey.
Special mention to Chris Saffin who played after having back surgery 2 weeks ago, and came up with a huge crunch play at right field to quash a mini comeback from the Senators in the last. As mentioned great batting by Knucks, but also Frenchy, Darren Noble, Benny Harfield and Tony Catt also got amongst the hits.

Sturt 2 Goodwood 9
This was a winnable game that got away. Eight opposition runs came from batters that got to first on a walk or hit-by-pitch. Sturt's defence was somewhat absent, a bit like most of the players at training last Thursday. Let's regroup and show some intensity and enthusiasm for the remaining two games to Christmas, against Glenelg (away) and GGCD (home). Highlights in the field included a fantastic running-diving, one-handed catch from Elliott Cameron at right field - a definite contender for catch of the year ! Also, two good tags at third base showed Sturt can make runners pay for trying to take extra bases. We need to work harder at training to be able to do this consistently. Sturt offence struggled against some good pitching and tight field-work from Goodwood. Safe hits to Andy McKinnon, Angus McKinnon, Tom Kenny, Beau Pelgrim, Zac Butler (double), Toby Cantrill. Special mention to Jack Fahy who laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to bring home Sturt's second run. Thank you to U16 players Toby Cantrill and Beau Pelgrim for helping out.

Under 16 Sturt
Sturt faced a competitive Northern Districts and started the game with a bang! 4 back to back stand up triples to Michael Robinson, Daniel Lee, Ali Young and Toby Cantrill set the tone for the game and we went on to win 11-1. Everyone hit very well against some good pitching. Many thanks to Tom Teague and Matt Mcbeth for filling in - you guys did very well.

Under 16 Saints
Once again we thank Peter Hall for coaching the boys. Greg had a knee operation so we wish him a speedy recovery. Also a big thanks to Dakota for making up numbers, he had a fantastic game with some great hits! Tom Teague pitched extremely well- actually pitching out the entire game and there were some great plays and catches in the outfield to lead us to a 3 to 1 win over Goodwood. A special note to all the boys in the team who conduct themselves in a manner that would make the club proud!

Under 16 Blues
The Blues lost 15-5 to East Torrens on Sunday. We let a winnable game get away from us and I believe the boys are ready to work hard on the fundamentals to turn it around for the second half of the season. Jayke Wayne and Jay Lunnon did a good job on the mound for us. Thanks to Jarrad LoBasso filling in for Fraser Goodes on the day.

Sturt came back from 7-3 down to beat Adelaide 13-7 at Flinders. It proved to be a tough encounter and tested the team's resolve. Will Brennan put a ball into orbit over centre field and he is showing improved form with the bat. Port this week at Sturt 10am. Hits; Nicholas 4 Brennan (HR) 2 Young, Papps, Brebner-Russ, Wood, Daws

Under 14/1 Saints
We traveled to Port Adelaide for this weeks game and on a windy day it was going to be a tough game as Port Adelaide are around the same mark as us. First to bat we had three runs and the boys hit the ball well, then into the field one up one out then the wheels fell off and Port made 6 runs with some good hitting. The boys again fell asleep and dropped their heads which was going to make it a tough day. We hit the front again at the top of the second with some great batting but again lost the lead in the field. Going into the 5th and last innings it was all tied up we made 6 runs and held Port Adelaide to 2 winning the game with a final score 19-15. This game was a great game to be part of for me and I hope for the kids, as they looked out of it with attitude and alertness at the end of the first innings. The boys hung in there though and going into the last they had a complete turn around and worked out that if they keep positive and work as a team doing the team things they can come from behind and win games. Bradley Trembath started on the mound and through strikes which allowed the opposition to hit which they did, Brett Mulryan come in and relieved Bradley and started to shut them down. With some unlucky calls from the umpire Brett lost some confidence although he was throwing well, this brought Jack Colmer to the mound and he finished of the work that Bradley and Brett had started completely shutting them down in the fourth and giving up 2 runs in the last. Jarrad Small was again behind the plate all day and was ok dropped his head in the 3rd and 4th but come back in the last. Some great catches from Henry Saundry helped the team out with the last catch of the game at a critical time. All boys did the job with the bat which was very pleasing to see with everyone having a safe hit. Hamish Straatman having a day with the bat late with 2 stand up triples. Base running has improved again but the boys need to understand and execute signals a little bit better. This was one game that we had to fight hard for and that is what the boys did all day even in the innings when we where asleep. Well done boys you should all be proud of the way you played that game. Hits: Triples Straatman (2), Doubles Colmer (1), Goldsworthy (1), Singles Small (2), O'Connor (3), Clifford (2), Goldsworthy (2), Saundry (1), Trembath (1), Mulryan (1), Colmer (1)

After three away games , we returned to Flinders seeking our fifth win in a row. Rams loaded the bases with one out in the first innings and only scored one run. This said a lot for the composure of our team and in particular Adam Hofmeyer on the mound. The boys then preceded to score seven runs in reply and maintained control of the game from there. Kane Mattsson looked confident in the batters box and finished with two hard hit doubles. Joel Grantham had a great game behind the plate blocking several tough pitches and picked up an outfield hit as well. Riley Hutchins had his best game taking a nice line drive catch at first , a hit to centrefield and two walks. Hits also went to Spiro Rozaklis , Tom Renfrey and Tim Kimber. Our next two games are against the two leading teams away and have come at a good time. They will be an important measure of how much we have improved and where we have to go before heading into the Christmas break. Final score Sturt 16 def. Rams 6 .

I guess the scoreline tells the story. A very one sided affair against sub standard opposition. I was pleased however, to see the boys maintain focus throughout the game and do all the right things in the field and batters box. A good disciplined performance. Sam Roberts threw another great game and only let 3 Goodwood runners on base over 5 innings. Our fielding was tight and all players picked up hits throughout the game.

Sturt 4 lost to Norths 9

Under 12/2 Saints
Saints won 11 to 9, everyone played a solid game as we also changed the team around alot giving everyone a go in the infield. We need to work hard at concentrating through the entire game as the last three weeks it has been quite evident that we have dropped off the game half way through. But to our credit we have managed to win over the last three weeks , keep up the good work. Special comments to Jayden Trembath who put in a solid two dig pitching performance keeping Woodville scoreless while he was on the mound. Henry Brennan came off first base to retrieve a wild throw and then tag out the runner late in the game and probably saved the game for us. Solid effort from Lewis Brideson closing the game and good first pitching effort from Tyson Ottaway . Max Guehrer also caught for the first time and did an excellent job and finally I thought Rupert Sundry had a good game as well.

Sturt T Ball AllStars

The Sturt Tee Ball Club is again this year participating in the "All Stars" competition during the 06/07 season.
Each year, East Torrens, Kensington, Southern Districts and Sturt Tee Ball Clubs select a squad of 12 U10 Tee Ballers to compete across 4 carnival days at each club.
Each team plays 3 games on each day - at the end of the 4 carnivals, the total wins/losses are tallied, and the winning club collects the perpetual trophy. Sturt Tee Ball has held the trophy for the last 3 years steered by the coaching efforts of Bob Booker (2004, 05) and Burt Admiraal (2003).
This year, Sturt Baseball Club has kindly agreed to host the Friday night training sessions and supply some terrific coaching support - with Ron McBeth, David Lightbody, and players such as Daniel Turner, Paul Holmes, Shane Horne and Zac Stokes all lending a hand.
We are very grateful for this support, and it's obviously assisting - we had 3 - 3 convincing wins at East Torrens first round last Sunday, 26 November.
The squad is listed as follows (so keep an eye out for these names in the future!)
Angus Brooks
Brodie Macbeth
Charlie Goldsworthy
Charlie Parker
Fraser Crameri
Hamish Allan
Hudson Proudman
Jack Bolingbroke
Kyle Campbell
Oscar Neighbour
Reuben Bishop
Zach Evreniadis

Round 2 will be at Kensington on Sunday 10 December 2006 - all spectators are welcome!

Division 1
This was a tough weekend for us, we played Southern Districts who were in pretty good form. Final score line was 10-3. I think we actually played pretty well, our hitting was solid with Paul Holmes returning to form with 2 hits. Defensively we are not up to the good teams of the league. Where we have opportunities to turn double plays, we only pick up 1 out whereas Southern Districts made 4 double plays and were very solid in the field all day. Zac Stokes threw nearly 5 innings for us and did a fine job, he is a player that is just trying to help us out on the mound and our job is made more difficult by players not turning up and not even having the courtesy to let the coaching staff know.

In Tuesday night mid week game we came up against last years premiers Goodwood, we were beaten 6-5 in a high standard game. Shane Horne pitched an outstanding game throwing 5 innings, he made 1 bad pitch for the game and it cost him a 2 run home run but he will learn from that with experience. Tom Winter finished the last innings and a bit and kept us in the game. There were also some highlights for us with the bat including Angus Roeger first A grade home run, Zac Stokes continues to lead with the bat with another 2 hits. Last nights game theme for us was to have some fun, the players were relaxed and it was probably the first game this year where a lot of enthusiasm was shown. This is going to be our theme for the rest of the year, enjoy ourselves and see if we can knock of some higher ranked teams. out and watch the 4’s.

Division 4
Although leading 2-1 after the 1st, we quickly found ourselves behind 6-2 after 2. David ‘Wild Thing’ Carter took over from Frenchy on the mound and stopped the Golden Grove charge and we eventually got back to 6 all after 4. Lack of a pre-season then showed on Carts as we again found ourselves trailing 11 to 6 after 5. But it was a great first outing for David and the boys are looking forward to more innings from the flame thrower. The team valiantly tried to peg back the margin but came up a couple short going down 11-9. The boys showed great character in coming back not once but twice in a good game of baseball.
Great hitting from Stuey Crutchley and Jamie Knuckey all day closely followed by Dan Martens and the Nob Nobs (Glen and Darren) kept us in the hunt. Mention must be made of Jamie’s superb hit and run execution which saw Stuey forced to leg it home from first on more than one occasion (forget the batting tunnels we need an oxygen tent!). The ability is there within this team to press for a finals spot but we must tighten up the pitching and stop so many free passes – a walk cannot be defended! For a team that was supposed to struggle the competitive spirit in this group is amazing and the camaraderie the best I have seen in a long time. The will to win does not diminish with age, just come

Division 5
Apart from a fighting last innings we didn’t really put enough pressure on an Adelaide side that had only lost one game for the year. Once again our pitchers in Rick and Barry threw enough outs to keep us in the game but we really let them down in the field again making 12 errors. Mark Burns and Barry Lunnon battered really well with most players getting at least one hit for the day. Trev Colmer did a great job behind the plate as well as picking up a number of hits. We are on the road for the next 2 weeks heading to North’s and Golden Grove so we need to pull our fingers out and have a real go as it is too far to drive home when loosing out there.17-9 was our final score but we are a lot better side than what we are showing.

Division 6
Div 6 travelled to Glenelg to play Adelaide. Tom Pledge started on the mound for us and we held our own, we were 7-2 up in the 6th and but as things happened we went down 10-7not a bad effort. Josh Connor caught and they both had a great game and so did all of us but it just didn’t happen {THIS TIME!!!!!!!}
This leads me into some thing I would like the club and all who read this to know. The Sturt Div 6 side now has been together for 2.5 seasons {2 summer and 1 winter season} and the other day I was looking at all the positives we have and it is amazing what i looked at.
We have 9 guys who NEVER played baseball before they came into Div 6 since this team was formed, and we now go up against teams and players who have played for many years in many different levels and we are taking it to every team when we play. Some teams even have had to sand bag their sides to beat us. To me that shows that we must be doing something right and what a great bunch of guys who are willing to go out have a go and really try to win!!! We train wednesday nights which is a big commitment and there is a great turn out for that which this writer gets a lot of "TRAINING DIV-6" NO DIV 6 TEAMS TRAIN.
But we do and it is starting to show, yes we have had a slow start to the season but we will win more games this season and who knows what will happen. This week we travel to Sth Dist for a 12:30 game. and training @6:15 @ the club.

A great team effort from Sturt with plenty of players prepared to backup, sacrifice and steal to notch-up our second win this year. Lots of positive talk and support on the bench and in the field was great to see. The win was set-up with strong pitching from Jack Fahy (68% strikes) and Alistair Young (64%), and was well backed up in the field. Great catches to Alistair, Zac and Jack in the outfield, Max was a reliable short-stop and Andy McKinnon had his best game catching so far, with two pop-up catches and solid blocking that saved runs. Sturt hit well, with doubles to Angus McKinnon, Tom Kenny, Jack Fahy and singles to Nick, Toby, Max, Tom, Andy (2) and Zac. Two RBI’s each to Tom and Elliott. Alistair laid down a great sacrifice bunt to score a run, as did Nick who was safe on fielder’s choice. It was an entertaining game and a great all-round team performance. Special thanks to U16 players Toby Cantrill, Max Renfrey and Alistair Young for helping us out.

Under 16 Division 1 Sturt Sturt defeated Port Adelaide 15-2 in a comprehensive victory. Daniel and Pat both did the job again on the mound and everyone chipped in offensively. Many thanks to Ben Young and Jackson Brebner Russ for filling in. Both of you did very well. We now move onto a tougher game against a top 4 side – Northern Districts – boys, make sure you are switched on!

Under 16 Saints
WOO HOO!!!
Saints finally got it together to ambush Indians 14 to 4 at a blustery Mortlock Park. The top of the lineup came out swinging and just about everyone hit. The fielding was much improved and some good pickoffs shut down the Indians' running game. Saints simply kept piling on runs and apart from a small glitch midgame kept the Indians quiet. Seb's return showed his usual spark that helped lift the team. Fraser picked up a great hit down the first base line. Tom pitched hard with Josh finishing off well producing a 6-2-3 double play to end the game. The boys really showed the aggression that is needed at this level. Way to go Saints.

Under 16 Blues
The Blues went down 16-2 to West Torrens. We let ourselves down with mental mistakes and fielding errors. Jay Lunnon had a useful outing on the mound. Jayke Wayne collected two hits including executing a perfect bunt for a safe hit, this was the first time he had bunted in his baseball career! We need to improve our mental approach to the game to continue to improve.

The boys struggled with the bat against some pitching which was a bit faster than they were use to. We only managed to hit the ball into play 2 times for the hole game with the rest of the at bats either a walk or strike out. Our pitchers Jordan Wayne, Matt Macbeth and Jess Lemon did a good job to keep us in the game throwing enough outs but a few errors and walks at crucial times really made us pay. The boys need and attitude change and it needs to start at training ,more self belief is vital for our success of this young team. You are never out of a game and must learn to fight it out and not just lay down and accept defeat. Very few highlights for the game although Jess lemon took a fantastic catch in the outfield followed up with Matt Macbeth taking a catch at centre field and throwing the runner out at home plate .The boys ended up going down 8-3 after being ahead most of the game.

In what can only be described as a very one sided lacklustre affair, the boys completely outclassed their opposition. Unfortunately the game never reached any great heights with the opposition struggling to throw strikes and make plays in the field. To our boys credit they did all they could to maintain the momentum with some good hitting when the opportunity arose and some excellent work in the field.
Ryan Kazmer did an excellent job behind the plate stopping any opportunity Port had with runners on. Brett Colmer was banished to the outfield this week and took two great catches. Sam Roberts continues to bat well, along with James Snellgrove and Sam Myers. A good win under difficult and trying circumstances.

The team were helped to a convincing win, 12 to 3 runs against Woodville by the first time pitching of Matt Santrac. Matt has caught ably for us but we knew he had a good arm and completed the game with 55 pitches taking the win. Well done Matt. This was backed up by good fielding from the whole team. Mitchell Lightbody picked up 2 hits and caught well. We had a triple play in the first innings with a line drive to Josh Tindall who proceeded to tag the runner and then throw another runner out at third base. Matt Wood picked up a critical first out in the 3rd innings. This great fielding continued in the last dig with a great double play by Harrison Emms. There were more base on balls to be had than hits this week but keen eyes and readiness for hits continues. Team work together, really shows. Well done all the team.

Woodville 12 Sturt 1
The U18 team faced top-of-the-ladder Woodville at Flinders University ground this week. A combination of sickness, injury and exams left players a little flat and in the heat, there was insufficient I.C.E. (Intensity, Composure, Enthusiasm). Sturt were always going to struggle against a well rounded team like Woodville. Angus McKinnon pitched with the speed and movement needed to contain a strong Woodville batting line-up and Jack Fahy back-up with good relief. The extra pitching velocity was a challenge for pitchers and catchers, with 6 opposition runs scored from pass balls/wild throws. Sturt's batting was almost non-existent with only two safe hits to Andy McKinnon and Max Renfrey. Highlights included a super reflex catch from Angus McKinnon on the mound as well as a a great running catch at left field, also two catches and solid fielding from Nick Thornquest at centrefield. Thanks to U16 players Max Renfrey, Beau Pelgrim, and Toby Cantrill for helping out. Look after that elbow Tom Kenny and hope to see you back soon.

Under 16 Division 1 Sturt Sturt defeated Goodwood 17-2 in a dominant performance. Not many things you can say about this game except we continue to improve as a group for the tougher teams later in the season. Thanks and well done to Haydn Pocock and Zac Harnett for playing with us this week.

As Greg had "gone fishing" Peter Hall stepped in to coach the boys this week. Thankyou to Alistair and the under 14 boys who came out to make up numbers. In the end it was a close game and we came up trumps to beat Glenelg 7 to 6. Some great pitching by Ali and Tom and brilliant catches in the outfield helped to get this fantastic result.

Sturt beat the Saints 16 – 7 in the derby at home. The early morning start took its toll with the boys being 4-2 down after the first. The eyes started to clear at about 10am and we put two seven run innings together and got over the line. Bye next week – everyone sleep in!

We played the derby at home with an early start but lost a good game of baseball final score Sturt 16 Saints 7. To the boys credit they played well and enjoyed their game on the weekend playing against some friends. Our pitchers Bradley and Dylan did a great job throwing strikes and Jarrad caught all day. Fielding was ok we just need to work on fly balls. At the end of the game I was happy to see all the boys still smiling which means even though we lost the boys still enjoyed their baseball and that is a step in the right direction for the rest of the season. Batting is still improving but the boys need to relax in the batters box and have fun while batting. Base running again improved and the boys are starting to understand the signals and what is expected of them when on base.

Under 14/1 Blues
What a thrilling game! The boys faced a very competitive and hard hitting East Torrens team and the game was decided by a 3 run home run in the last innings. The Blues boys had their noses infront for all of the game and went into the last innings 6 runs ahead. With a few walks and a couple of errors the east Torrens lad hit a home run to eventually win 14-13. The boys had their first real test for the year and we feel that even though we didnt win we could take a lot of positves from the game.Michael Gray had his first pitch for the year and did a great job as well as batting strongly.Dakota once again hit strongly as did Billy Burford. Jarrad Lo Basso did a great job behind the plate on a trying day as well as showing what he is capable of with a huge hit to centre field when we needed it. Matt Macbeth was extremely unlucky not to be given a home run when we had 2 runners on and that could have been the difference in the end.He also picked of 3 runners at first base which is very rare. Jess Lemon had a solid day as usual both in the field and also picked up 3 walks.Lewis is a great team man and worked hard all day to keep his team mates in the game. Jordan batted well without luck on the day and Alex Martens continues to be "Mr Consistent" in all parts of his game. Thanks to Brad Trembath for filling in and helping us out on the weekend. It was great having him back in the team. We now face Southern Districts who have been playing well and the boys will need to step up and all have a red hot go on the weekend .We have the talent and all is needed is the belief.

Under 14/2 Sturt
The match up against H&G at West Lakes was a game of two halves. We established a 15 - 0 lead with some great pitching from Adam Hofmeyer and some positive batting. Unfortunately when I made some changes we seemed to loose concentration and let H@G back into the game. Thankfully it was all too late but it did highlight some of our weaknesses. Tom Renfrey had two outfield hits after a long bus ride back from Canberra, Joel Grantham did well behind the plate and Sam Osmond, Kane Mattsson , Riley Hutchins and Martin Kimber all came up with a pair of hits. Final score 15 - 10.

Sturt 14 def Woodville 4
After a slow start and a strong mid game challenge by Woodville, the boys bounced back with some good batting form and rallied with 7 in the last to finally win 14-4. The side took a slightly different look this week with Tyler Lunnon getting his first opportunity on the mound who threw very well. Some good batting by all the boys certainly backed up Tyler's hard work. Sam Roberts finsihed the game off on the mound and shut Woodville down. Over all a good team effort both offensively and defensively and we now look forward to Port Adelaide this week.

Under 12/2 Sturt
We had a win against Henley & Grange 14 to 12 runs. Some great batting again from the boys with Josh Tindall and Harrison Emms both hitting ground rule doubles. Austin Lightner and Scotty Wyatt both getting singles. All the boys are looking to get a hit when in the batting box, and this is very pleasing. The team continue to support each other positively at the game and this attitude shows through in their defensive plays. Austin’s pickup at shortstop and Sam Kazmer’s hustle to second saw a great out made. It shows that the boys are attending to what is happening in the game and where they need to go or what play they would make. Josh Tindall started our pitching holding H&G well and Mitchell closed the second innings down while we hade been able to make 9 runs to their 5. Austin came in to pitch finishing off our last innings. Well done to our pitchers. Its good to see the team have learnt the basic rules around sliding into home plate and stepping out of the batting box for plays at home- well-done boys

This game was really one that got away from us. We were beaten 10-9 by Woodville after leading 9-7 going into the last innings. There were some really encouraging signs from the game including some quality at bats by Jimmy Passmore and Daniel Turner with 3 hits each, Tim Boundy continued his good recent form with another 2 hits and Paul Holmes returned to form with 2 hits. Unfortunately, as with most games this season we had another bad innings in the field, this time costing us 6 runs. The errors we continue to make should not happen at this level and it continues to bite us and cost us runs. Good teams do not make throwing errors, drop catches and miss hitting cutoffs. We spend lots of time at training on fielding but errors at training do not cost runs and in games they do. Daniel Turner pitched an outstanding game and deserved a better result. These things happen in team sports and there will come a time when he pitches worst and still picks up a win. This week we play a double header against Glenelg which is a tough task at the best of times but we will go out and give it our best and see if we can spring a surprise or two.

The boys had a hard fought win over Playford City 8-6.It was a game where we almost showed our potential with the bat with some great hitting with runners in scoring position. Nearly every player got at least one hit for the game against a pitcher that challenged our hitters. Barry Lunnon fought hard on the mound to a free swinging team that showed little respect to the old master. Our defence had some great plays but once again we still came up with too many errors with almost every player making one on the day. Still a win is a win .We need an umpire at Flinders at 12:30 this week and we are prepared to pay 2 $25 if someone can help us out as most of our team have umpired for other teams during the year so we would appreciate some reciprocation.

Well we are now in full swing of the season. we are now 2-4 with a 21-9 win over pt Adelaide.
We had Trev Hendry pitch the whole game on Saturday and Trev had a great game . We had a few errors but made up for that in the batting dept. Every one got on base and Adam martin who was our lead off for the day and really has got his eye on the ball for hitting.Well done Adam
Another special mention is josh Connor who caught all day on Saturday. It was very hot and humid back there all day and josh had a great game.
Last week many of you may not have known but we turned a triple play that many have not seen in a seniors game for quite a while and boy did it come off well. Also this saturday it was good playing late for we had a small crowd! This was the first time in a while we had more fans then the other side! We do put on a good show in div 6 you never know what might happen - so far we have had as mentioned before 1 triple play 1 ejection, a few stand up triples a stand up hr, some drama a lot of laughs and a few more rookies to the club, So next time we play at the club come early and watch our game for who knows what might happen!!!!!!!!! This week we play pt adelaide again but at port at 12:30. See all the div 6 guys there and don’t forget we practice Wednesday nights at 6:15 and go thru until we see fit.

Kensington 11 Sturt 4
At home, the Sturt team came up against a well drilled Kensington team. While both teams hit plenty of baseball, Kensington were more able to make routine outs at first base and to deliver decisive outfield hits. The Sturt team struggled to penetrate with the bat, Kensington making 12 routine outs at first base compared to Sturt’s 4. Poor fielding from Sturt, with a mixture of errors, fumbles, muffed flys and poor choices, meant 4 of Kensington’s runs were unearned. Safe hits to Andrew McKinnon, Sam Bates (2), Zac Butler, Bradley Baldwin (2), Elliott Cameron, Matt Borlace, Sam Day (2). Special mention to Toby Cantrill (U16) who, once again, consistently hit the strike zone with his pitching, to Bradley Baldwin (U16) for his 2 safe hits and solid fielding, and to Sam Day (U16) for his 2 safe hits and composure during a tough spell on the mound. Thank you to Chris (umpire) and Robyn Cantrill (scorer).

We played Southern Districts at Flinders and after getting to 10 all going into the last we fell short to a final score of 14-17. The boys made a great improvement from last week with some good pitching from Dylan, Jack and Brett. Base running has improved again and the boys started swinging the bat. We need to still keep our heads up for the whole game and then these boys I think will realise that they are a good unit and can play baseball

Under 14/1 Blues
The young Blues side have recorded their 6 win in a row and remain undefeated in the competition. We aren’t getting ahead of ourselves as we know we have some tough games coming up that are going to show where we are really at. We beat a very inexperienced Port side that through down the challenge early in the game .Our hitters were batting without luck. Our pitchers really controlled the game with Jordan Wayne starting well throwing 3 innings followed by 3 innings from Dakota Mitchell showing he has his confidence back and the game was closed by Jess Lemon for his first pitch for the year. These guys did a great job on the mound but were also ably back up in the field .Lewis Mcdonald made some great plays at third as well as coming back to form with the bat. Alex Martin and Josh Masters continued to smash the ball and Billy Burford being his reliable self with the bat and at second base. We had a list of things to work on during the game and the focus and execution of the 10% was a credit to them. The eventual score after our batters got on top was 11- 3.

Under 14/2 Sturt
We travelled to Glenelg to play a team that was level with us on two wins and two losses. We escaped early jams in the first and second innings with consistent pitching from Adam Hofmeyer and some good defence. Adam had 6 strikeouts in 4 digs and the solid defence saw us with a 7 run lead going into the bottom of the last. Tim Kimber came on to pitch giving up one run before closing out the game , including an unbelievable stab of an ankle high line drive. Well done Tim. Spiro Rozaklis had a tremendous day with the bat going 4 for 4 , Joel Grantham hit a crucial 2 run single , Riley Hutchins took a mighty catch in leftfield and Jesse Luter made 3 strong plays at second. A special mention must go to Sam Osmond who came on midway in his first game for the season and went 2 for 2. Final score 10 - 4.

Under 12/1 Sturt
A tough hard fought 4-3 win over Kensington. This game had it all, both teams were undefeated and both played exceptional quality baseball. For most of the game it was a pitchers duel as shown by the low scoreline. Our boys hit the ball hard all day but Kensigton's fielding kept us at bay as we did with them. We got the early lead but Kensington got back in front late in the game, to the boys credit thay rallied in our last at bat to get back in front and then we shut them down. It was our first real tough encounter for the year and all the players held tough. Well done guys!

Division 1
Sturt 2 lost to Golden Grove 11
It is not often in an 11-2 loss that you can find many positives. In this instance I can though, we had 3 players that has their first start in an A grade game. Shane Horne had his first pitching start, he battled hard and showed that he can belong at this level. He needs to learn to get in front of the hitters more and then he can dictate, whereas he was getting behind in the count and had to throw more fastballs which at this level are hit hard by most players. Adam Kerr and Darren Stewart also had their first starts at A grade level. I was really impressed by their enthusiasm and they had fine games, their enthusiasm seemed to drag their fellow team mates along and it certainly made the game a lot easier to coach this week. Zac Stokes continues to hit the ball hard picking up another 2 hits, Daniel Turner picked up his first hits for the year and hopefully it gets a run on for him now. We continue to battle away and will not give in but are quickly learning that you need a dominant pitcher to stay competitive in this league. Most teams are now picking up an import unless they have already have quality pitching and it makes it hard to be competitive if you are trying to stay true to your beliefs.

Division 2
Sturt 4 defeated Golden Grove 3
As with the previous week we started slowly allowing GG 3 runs in the first 3 innings. Our hitters were not swinging the bat allowing far too many good pitches by. We tightened our defense, started swinging the bat and putting them under pressure. Leveling the score and then going ahead late in the game to record a 4-3 victory. Despite a defensive lapse, it was heartening to see the team rally and demonstrate their actual ability. Each week will get tougher, but I feel confident we can achieve our team goals.

Div 5 new they had a challenge when they came up against a very strong Goodwood team that haven’t lost for 19 games. We were keen to wreck their party and after the first 4 innings we were travelling nicely being 3 -1 up. Barry Lunnon was holding their strong batting line up at bay and our defence for the first time this year was outstanding particularly Jeff Nicholas at short stop who had 7 great plays for the day. One bad inning allowing them to score 7 runs put us behind the eight ball and we weren’t able to generate the hits when we needed them. Ben Colyer had a great day with the bat. Barry Lunnon smashed a huge home run but the rest of our hits were scattered and we couldnt get back in the game .We eventually went down10-3.Thanks to Neil Stewart and Jeff Nicholas for playing for us on the weekend.

Sturt 5 lost to Golden Grove 9 We made the long journey away this week to Golden Grove-Central Districts (GGCD) ground for a 9-5 defeat. Once again, Sturt got off to a good start with a 1-0 first inning's lead. However, GGCD applied some heavy batting pressure in the 2nd innings, making the most of a dry, hard outfield with a triple, double and single coming from consecutive batters. In view of Sturt's inexperienced outfield, the team did well to rally and finally close the innings, but not before GGCD had scored seven runs. To Sturt's credit, the team remained positive and fought back well for the rest of the game, but in the end was unable to close the gap. The team is keen to play GGCD again at home. Safe hits to Andrew McKinnon, Sam Bates, Angus McKinnon, Jack Fahy, Matt Borlace, Zac Butler. Special mention to Max Renfrey (U16) who took a sensational diving catch at second base, Tom Kenny who stopped a rocket line drive at third and Zac Butler who played his first game of baseball. Thank you to Max and Toby Cantrill (U16) for helping the U18 team and best wishes to Nick Thornquest, hope the arm is repairing well.

Everyone is swinging the bat well and we will only get better each week. Many thanks again to Jackson Brebner-Russ

Saints met Angels at Flinders. The Angels flew out to an early lead thanks to some good hitting and a couple of errors. Saints started to claw their way back into the match but couldn't quite make it. The Blues triumphed over Goodwood for the second week in a row with a comprehensive 14-4 win. Zac Harnett put in his best performance of the year spending the entire game on the mound. Jayke Wayne put in a solid performance at second base, he stopped two potential rallies with excellent defensive play. Zac, Jayke Wayne, Jake Borlace, Jay Lunnon, Jarrad Pearce, and Haydn Pocock collected safe hits, Fraser Goodes hit the ball hard and was unlucky not to collect a hit. Our boys collected the maximum 9 runs in the 3rd inning, what was more impressive was the Blues scored all 9 runs with two outs! Well done boys. Thanks to Tom Teague, Hugh Wirth and Matt Mulryan for their support on the day.

A home game at Norman Reserve is always a treat , and the boys duly responded. Without Adam Hofmeyer (our regular starting pitcher) I simply asked the boys for an honest effort. East Torrens scored early but we responded with 5 in the first and 7 in the second with some good batting against their starting pitcher. Later in the game East Torrens fought back to within 15-12 , but a pitching change helped us to a 22 - 12 victory. Kane Mattsson had a huge day with a double, a single and 4 RBI'S , Tim Kimber pitched well and delivered a 2 run single, Tom Renfrey had an important run scoring double before retiring injured and Martin Kimber took a great catch in left field then doubled up the runner at second. We have a vast amount of work to do but the signs are promising.

Sturt 2 lost to Northern Districts 12

This game was a real disappointment for myself and the coaching staff. There was a distinct lack of passion and pride in our performance and this showed in the effort produced. We were beaten 12-2 in a mercy rule game by Northern Districts and this put us at our lowest ebb. To Northern Districts credit, they have really improved, they are really well coached and are showing that if you put 100% effort into the game and make every play at full tilt, you are always a chance. Shane Horne once again battled really well. He is showing the effects of a full preseason and he should be congratulated for his efforts. Tom Brice hit a home run and valued his at bats, Zac Stokes picked up a hit and played his first full game in the field but highlights other than that were very hard to find. We must not accept these efforts we are putting in, as losing and losing badly is a very hard habit to break and it will make for a very long season.

This was our first game at Sturt for the season, and the second in a row against Southern Districts. This time Sturt was victorious 7 runs to 3, Sturt applied good batting pressure, putting the ball into play 23 times from 31 visits to the plate. Safe hits to Andrew McKinnon, Sam Bates, Matt Borlace (2), Beau Pelgrim and Angus McKinnon (from a sacrifice bunt that caught the opposition napping). The team applied good running pressure when on base and there were none better than the team hare (Andrew McKinnon) with 5 stolen bases, getting home for 3 runs. The pressure eventually told on the opposition who made several errors and wild throws. Sturt players concentrated well in the field with only one error for the day and 14 outs for a solid fielding performance. A satisfying comeback after last week and a well deserved victory for the Sturt team. Special thanks to the U16 players who helped out: Toby Cantrill, who pitched solidly and stopped a rocket return ball; Beau Pelgrim with a safe hit and 4 faultless plays at second base; and Alistair Young who completely baffled the opposition, striking out 6 of 15 batters

Saints 8 lost to Glenelg 9

Saints were at home to Glenelg and started strongly. Alas, after leading most of the game, we let Glenelg get ahead at the end and although we had the bases loaded with none out we were unable to deliver the final blow and pull off a win. The boys have reduced their number of errors and are starting to look like real baseballers. We still made a few mistakes and will have to lift the level of our batting. John and Fraser are improving out of sight and Josh and Matt each started a successful double play. Thanks to Sam and Toby for their efforts today and best wishes to Seb for a swift recovery from his injury from last week.

Sturt Blues came out on top of the Goodwood boys 12-5 on Saturday. Daniel Lee returned to the mound with a solid opening inning, striking out the side and walking one. Everybody contributed, Jake Borlace went 2-3, Zac Harnett hit the ball hard every at bat and was unlucky to come away with only a triple on the day. Kyle Larson was 3-4, Jarred fielded a bunt in text book style while catching to throw the batsmen out. Fraser Goodes decided to steal as many bases as he could. Haydn Pocock hit a massive double and was aggressive on the base paths as well, Jayke Wayne and Zac closed the game strongly for the Blues. Thanks to Alistair Young filling in for an injured Trent Small and providing leadership on the day. Get right soon Trent we will miss you!

The boys played Woodville again for the second time in three games and the last for the year, but the outcome for this game was different from the first time we played them with a 16-13 win. Jack Colmer and Bradley Trembath did the job on the mound with some good pitching, while Jarrad Small did the job behind the plate all day, everybody else made some great plays in the field when we needed the outs, but we still have some work to go in the field with some errors made. I am sure as the boys play more they will eliminate those errors. The boys are starting to do the 1% team things with backing throws up in the field and talking while fielding . Everyone did the job with the bat and base running this week and by making the runs it only helps the pitches by giving them something to defend. We still need to be switched on for the whole game though from start to finish.

Thanks!

On behalf of the canteen organizers this year we would like to say thanks to the helpers who have worked in the canteen on such short notice so far. It is great to see some familiar faces (so I guess last year hasn’t put them off helping again). The aim is to have a roster in place so when the SABL have finalised the program maybe this could happen. Thanks again, and here’s to another successful year on the field and in the canteen. Just a reminder to the club that meals are available every Thursday night at the club!

Division 1
Division 1 In another disappointing performance, we were beaten by Goodwood 13-2. We are not getting ourselves in a position to score some runs and put pressure on the opposition. In what was close to our strongest side we could field, we were comprehensively outplayed. Our hitters are struggling at the moment and the only thing that changes that is continued hard work and practice which is what we will do. The were some bright moments in the game, Shane Horne got his first pitching opportunity in Division 1 and was not out of place, he came in and threw the ball hard and for strikes which meant that Goodwood had to swing the bats and give our fielders a chance. Will Frogley continues to impress playing a very strong game at shortstop and picking up a hit. Zac Stokes picked up 2 hits and will be back in the field full time this week.

Division 2
Sturt 5 defeated Goodwood 1

Division 3
Sturt 9 defeated Adelaide 0 (forfeit)

Division 4
Sturt 7 defeated Adelaide 6

Division 5
This game was always going to be a close one and at the end of the day it was having a 5 all draw with a strong hitting East Torrens side. Barry Lunnon had a day out by pitching the whole game plus also picking up numerous hits. Rick Trembath also battered very well. A big highlight of the game was David Lightbodys first game in 20 years taking a spectacular catch in the outfield as well as picking up a hit at a crucial time of the game .After making 7 errors in the first innings and being down 5 nil until the last the boys rallied to come back and tie up the game. For div 5 it was a great standard of baseball.

Division 6
Sturt 1 lost to Glenelg 12

Season yet to commence

Under 18
Sturt 4 lost to Souths 16 We played Southern Districts away this week. Our team got off to a great start scoring 3 runs in the first innings. Unfortunately we were unable to back this up in defence. We struggled to consistently throw strikes and made basic skill errors in the field. Highlights included some good catches including a spectacular running catch from Jack Fahy at left field and a swirling pop-up fly to Tom Kenny at third base. Safe hits to Andrew McKinnon (2), Jack Fahy (2), Angus McKinnon, Tom Kenny and Matt Borlace. It was pleasing to see we hit the ball more this week but could not get enough runners on base to score. In the long term it is better we try to earn our runs, rather than get them from walks. Thirteen (13) runners on base from walks last week (a gift) compared to two (2) this week. Our U16 player this week was Toby Cantrill who pitched two and a bit innings and contributed well.

Under 16 Sturt
nder 16 Division 1 Sturt After blazing 9 runs in the first innings, the bats fell a little quiet to finally run our 14-4 victors over Adelaide. Pat Burns was a stand out with both bat and ball. Many thanks to David Nicholas and Jackson Brebner-Russ for filling in this week – you both stood up to the pitching at the next level well.

Under 16 Saints
Saints 9 lost to East Torrens 18
Saints started very well in the top of the first with the innings being halted with the mercy rule limiting the tally to nine runs. A mixture of power hitting and clever batting was responsible. Unfortunately Torrens were able to blank us for the rest of the game while they made up the deficit and passed us to finish on top. An unfortunate injury to Seb left us with a hole in the outfield and an automatic out which made life harder. Some improvement was obvious from last week and there is some real talent in this team.

Under 16 Blues
Sturt 4 lost to Northern Districts 12

Under 14/1 Sturt
Sturt had a 26-4 win against the Indians at the Reservation. Ben Young held the Tribe to 2 hits before Sam Hollis made his debut appearance on the mound to strike out the side in the last inning. Some good batting by the boys but a little less day dreaming will be needed when we take on the more fancied Norths at Flinders next week. (Subject to change)
Hits; Papps, Brebner-Russ (HR) Hollis( HR) Daws 3, Wood (HR) Young, Holt 2 Brennan

Under 14/1 Saints
We played Adelaide at Flinders and the boys again, made it a tough game. But the result was different from last week with a 10-9 win. Pitching again got us into a bit of trouble early going 6 runs down. We need to work on our pitching to throw consistent strikes each week. Thanks to Matthew MacBeth for filling in on the mound giving up only three runs in three digs. Fielding was ok but the boys need to show enthusiasm for the whole game and do the team 1%. Adelaide where throwing strikes with their first pitcher and although we where swinging the bat we were not getting hits until the fourth dig when we got on top of him and made 7 runs, this sparked the boys up and the next dig held them scoreless while we made one more to take the score to Sturt 8 Adelaide 6 going into the last. Adelaide scored three runs to hit the front by one 8-9 with us yet to bat. Some great base running and pass balls from Adelaide saw us score the runs we needed to win the game. We need to switch on as a team at the start of the game not half way through and be more confident in the way we play our game.

Under 14/1 Blues
Jordan Wayne led the way on the weekend with a great effort on the mound throwing 4 strong innings & hitting 2 for 3.Matt MacBeth had a great day in the box going 3 for 4 he has had a great start to the year. Another strong effort in the box was Josh Masters who hit 2 doubles. Although we won 18 – 9 against Kensington we have a great deal of improving to do as the boys fell asleep in the last dig to give up 7 runs , until then we were perfect in the field.

Under 14/2 Sturt
After a good win last week we hit the second game blues ! West Torrens came out hitting the ball and a combination of indecision and not getting the outs cost us a lot of runs. An 18-3 loss is never nice but the team seems to get along well and should now realise there is a lot of work to do. Spiro played well at third making four good outs,Tayler did a good job behind the plate,Joel took a top catch in centrefield before coming in to catch and Jesse made a nice play at second in his first ever game of baseball.

Under 12/1 Sturt
Sturt 13 def Southern Districts 3
Another good performance from the boys again taking care of Southern Districts. Solid batting and aggressive base running was the key this week and all players did their bit in this regard.
Our pitching is as strong as ever and is keeping scoring opportunities down for the opposition, Harrison Lightbody and Sam Roberts are both doing an excellent job. Fraser Durham, Ryan Kazmer and Brett Colmer all batted well this week picking up several hits. Sam Myers was unpassable in the outfield taking a couple of nice catches. We back up against Southern Districts again this weekend and hopefully we can produce a similar result.

Under 12/2 Sturt
Sturt 4 lost to Eagles 10

Under 12/2 Saints
Sturt Saints played Kensington and with a slow start we gained a 18 - 6 win and another great team batting performance. Tyler Lunnon pitched his quota and pretty much dominated the mound. Max Guehrer batting performance was powerful, keep it up Max.Darcy Cathro and Jordan McArdle both put in a solid game in the field and contributed with the bat. Thanks to William for being the team man and sitting out the second half of the game so we could give Rupert Saundry a game. All the boys are improving by the game and have the right attitude to go a long way , it has been very enjoyable to coach . Big game next week against the other Div 2 side at home, lets go get them.

Thursday Night Meals

Just a reminder to the club that meals are available every Thursday night at the club!
Make sure you come down and support the club and catch up with everyone.

Division 1
Sturt 0 lost to Glenelg 17
Hits – Frogley, Boundy
In what could only be termed totally unacceptable, we were completely outplayed by Glenelg to the tune of 17-0. The scoreboard is an accurate reflection of the game in that we were outplayed in every facet. Our hitting, defence and pitching struggled and we did not have 1 clear winner for the day. Jared Holland continues to battle away for his at bats but probably the less said on this game the better. On a brighter note, thankyou to all the players that helped to contribute to the sausage sizzle held at Harvey Norman on Saturday. We managed to put in $667 profit to the club and I would wholeheartedly suggest to all teams that they pick a week and do a fundraising bbq. This is a very easy and quick way to raise some much needed finances and help us get to our batting tunnel vision quicker.

Division 2
Division 2 3 runs in the first 2 innings and we were looking at a good game. Then an 8 run innings by H&G blew us and our confidence away. With plenty of time still we were unable to produce any runners or advancing hits which was very disappointing. Injuries to Jarrod & Nick obviously didnt help our cause. But we need to remain positive and produce those runs. We can not give the opposition 5&6 outs an innings. Shane started well and we had good relief by Telmo returing to the mound. Adam Kerr picked up 2 hits and was very good at centre field. Trent Mattschoss also picked up a couple of hits for us.

Division 3
Sturt 3 lost to Kensington 12
After 8 early runs against Rick Mitchell, Jake Gibson came on and for the 2nd week in a row did a great job on the hill. Jake also went 2 for 4 with the bat! Another great effort at centrefield by Ryan Mattchoss in only his second game for the club. Everyone hit well but we just couldn’t convert.

Division 4
Division 4 Sturt 5 lost to Henley & Grange 13

Division 5
The boys had a hard fought win against Flinders on the week end. They faced some very good pitching for this grade .Once again Barry Lunnon shone out with the ball and the bat .His huge home run sealed the victory. The boys need to eliminate the many errors we are making in the field to help out our pitchers .Dean Franke has been hitting the ball well and in general our offence has been solid .A huge thanks to Trevor Colmer for umpiring the game even though we were the away team .Thankyou also to the guys who got down to the club Saturday morning to help Bruce set up the field .We are expecting a tough home game this week against East Torrens.

Division 6
Well it was a nice to play baseball on Saturday. The div 6 side travelled to east Torrens who we played the week before so we knew what we were up against it,

Jason Hart was on the mound, and Josh Connor caught most of the game and Jason did a great job. We looked good for most of the game we went up and were leading 7-0 but we sort of fell a part towards the end and as heart wrenching that it is we went down 7-8 in the last inning. This coach is looking forwards from here and we will win our fair share of games this season, and we will be in the hunt for the playoffs at the end of this season even tho we have had a few set backs so far this season {and not just having a win yet} if you want to know just ask.

I want to thank all the guys who came out on Saturday and will see all you next Saturday at Glenelg

Sturt U18’s played East Torrens at East Torrens ground and unfortunately went down 16- 15. After an initial shaky start from Sturt that saw us 6-1 down at the end of the first innings, the guys rallied behind some great pitching from Jack Fahy. Solid defensive work with catches from Nick Thornquest, Sam Day and Angus McKinnon, as well as some routine outs at first base, was backed up in offence with safe hits to Andy McKinnon, Jack Fahy and Sam Bates. The team made the most of their opportunities on base with aggressive base-running and worked their way to a 15-11 lead in the last innings. Unfortunately, lapses in concentration from our boys and solid consecutive hitting from East Torrens saw the opposition get the required runs. Special mention to Jack Fahy who pitched the entire game and consistently hit the strike zone, and Andy McKinnon who caught his first match and ran the bases like a greyhound to cross the plate for four of our runs. Also, a big thank-you to Sam Day and Alistair Young from the U16’s, both of whom took great outfield catches and were solid contributors to our team.

Under 16 Sturt
A very good start to the season with a solid 7-3 win over East Torrens. We were desperately unlucky in parts of the game not to score a lot more runs. We left 14 runners on base which could have come back to haunt us – this certainly needs to improve.

Pat Burns and Ali Young turned in excellent first up appearances on the mound and will get better from here.

Nice to get the first game out of they way – we move onwards and upwards!

Under 16 Saints
Under 16 Division 1 Saints
Saints 6 lost to West Torrens 24
Saints were at home to a very strong Eagles team who flew off to a strong start aided by strong hitting and some Saints errors. This set the pattern for the day. Saints looked like they might have been thinking about the holiday homework they had put off and it was not until the last dig that some respectability was brought back into the score line. Tom did a good job opening, Josh closed well, Bradley enjoyed some success with the bat and Hugh was his consistent self behind the plate.n Thanks to Brett and Cameron for doing a good job filling in. Cameron's catch in centre was a highlight and the Mulryans combined for a good "brothers" play.

Under 16 Blues
The Blues went down 12-0 to Northern Districts. Although the final score was lopsided the Blues showed signs of playing good baseball this season. The boys were not intimidated facing a pitching staff boasting state players and were aggressive at the plate. Jayke Wayne finished the game on the mound after a solid stint by Zac Harnett, expect a much closer contest when we meet the same team next week.

Under 14/1 Sturt
Sturt had a good first up win at South beating the Hawks 19-1. The boys hit well and generally played a good game of baseball. Defensively Ben Young and David Nicholas did not give up a hit so the field had an easy day.
Hits; Brebner-Russ 4 Wood, Hollis (HR) 3 Lamonby, Papps 2 Daws, Young

Under 14/1 Saints
Saints 9 lost to Woodville 15
We started the season of with a game at home against Woodville and after a last minute training on Friday night the kids where excited about the first round, but on the day we had a couple of kids not feeling the best and three kids playing an under 16's game before their own. We started of OK but struggled on the mound to find the strike zone and gave up too many walks. To the kids credit they came back and hit the front 9 runs to 8. But when the boys hit the front we seemed to self destruct and let Woodville get a 7 run dig. Some poor base running and fielding did not help but it was the first game of the season and I do believe that this group of kids will gel well together and we will have a great year. CHINS UP BOYS AND ENJOY YOUR BASEBALL.

Under 14/1 Blues
A great way to start the season with a 14-9 win. I asked the boys to be aggressive in the batters box and on the bases and they certainly were! 10 safe hits and 13 stolen bases reflects this.

Man of the match effort must go to Matt McBeth who went 2 for 3 and pitched 4 very good innings. A great job to Jarrad Lobasso who caught a great game considering Wednesday night was the first time he had held a catchers glove. Dakota Mitchell also picked up three hits as 7 batters had safe hits. Well done guys – great team effort.

Under 14/2 Sturt
Sturt 16 defeated Kensington 8

Under 12/1 Sturt
An excellent start to the season with 21-0 win against Woodville. After weeks of training all the hard work finally paid off as the Sturt unit was far too polished in the field and with the bat. Our pitching was spot on all day and we held down Woodville to a few scattered hits with none of their runners advancing past second base. Our boys all batted extremely well and were aggressive on the base paths.

Its difficult to single out individuals who played well as I believe every player did their bit to achieve the end result.

Under 12/2 Sturt
Sturt 23 defeated Woodville 4

Under 12/2 Saints
Great start to the season with a big win over East Torrens 17-6. Henry Brennan started on the mound and pitched a superb game backing up his pitching effort with a couple of nice hits. Everyone hit the ball well and the base running was also a highlight of the game. Thanks to all the parent for getting the kids there on time, special thanks to Bernard Hill for scoring the game without any experience at all hopefully it didn't scare him to much. Thanks to Richard Hayden for helping with the Batting line up and to Trevor Colmer and Barry Lunnon for coaching bases and helping me with my first game as coach. Brett Colmer for coming out and helping the Div 2 when he also had his own Div 1 game latter in the day, his hitting and fielding also helped with the win. Warm welcome to Lewis from our team, Lewis Brideson has come over from Goodwood and relieved Henry on the mound and did good job in closing the game for me, also had a solid hit at bat.

Over all this was a team effort and all should be happy with their game and as a team we are going to have fun this year.

Thursday Night Meals

Just a reminder to the club that meals are available every Thursday night at the club! This week we have chicken schnitzel burgers! Make sure you come down and support the club and catch up with everyone.

Division 1

Sturt 0 lost to Adelaide 6
Hits - Winter 2 Holland 1 Holmes 1 Faehse 1 Frogley 1
This was a disappointing way to commence the season, the players were rusty in their thought processes and this cost us the game. Adelaide defeated us 6-0 but we gifted them 5 runs by making fundamental fielding errors that shouldn’t be made at this level.

There were some promising signs during the game but we need to play at a higher level for a longer part of the game for us to start to move up the ladder. Daniel Turner battled really well on the mound for 7 innings and was then relieved by Tom Winter for the last 2 innings. Tom will have to pick up more of the pitching slack during the season due to our lack of pitching strength but the one thing I can say about our pitchers is that they won’t complain – they will just do their best and that is all I ask for. The hitting side of things was pretty poor apart from a couple of players, Jared Holland and Tom Winter both battled hard for their at bats but we need to make opposition teams work harder for their outs. Adelaide are in the same position as us without a lot of pitching depth but we never made them have to make a change by giving up too many cheap outs.

Division 2

After a slow new season start in the batting box, the pace picked up, seeing all players getting bat to ball. With good situational hitting, with runners on base, Adelaide was put under pressure, forcing errors and the end result a good 11-2 victory. Shane Horne’s preseason work showed on the mound, pitching 7 innings for 2 runs, including 7 K2’s & only 4 hits. Rick Mitchell closed out the last innings. Peter Turner had a fine day out, with solid fielding and batting, 2 for 2 on the day. For the first game of the season we were defensively very solid.
Neil Stewart

Division 3

Division 3 had a very good win over Goodwood 6-4. After starting slowly against a previous frontline Goodwood pitcher, the Saints came alive to snatch victory in the last innings. Jake Gibson pitched well and Matt Whitford turned in a Best on Ground performance. Good start boys!

Division 4

Division 4 kicked off the season in fine style with a well deserved victory over Glenelg 7- 6. Darren French pitched 5 strong innings after his lengthy preseason training (1 week) and Jack Fahy finished the game off well. Jamie Knuckey, Stuart Crutchley and Darren French all hit well on the day.

Division 5

With a dominant pitching performance from Barry Lunnon, the Saints defeated Glenelg 15-1. Everyone contributed with the bat and the boys are excited about the season ahead.

Division 6

After keeping in touch with a very good East Torrens side (who has dropped down from Division 5) the Saints gave up 8 in the 6th innings to lose 12-2. A good hit out for the boys who are looking forward to a good season.
