Sturt 4 d Northern Districts 3

In what was quite an entertaining game of baseball the Saints jumped out to an early lead with some clutch hitting from Brebner-Russ, Nicholas, Macbeth and Arnold.

However from that point on the Norths pitcher did a stellar job of keeping our hitters off balance and scattering a few hits.

Scott Quinlan threw in his first game in the double blue and given his sore non-throwing shoulder, did a great job.

The score remained at 3-2 the Saints way right through to the 9th inning when Norths tied the ball game up.

We got last crack at the win - Arnold led off with a base hit, Wirth executed the bunt, Tyson chewed up 13 pitches in a quality at bat and then Mitch Lightbody smashed a double off the reliever to win the game. Perfect baseball.

Well done boys - a win is nice reward for some great effort in the season so far. I thought we played excellent defence. Both mitch and Macca up the middle were solid all day.

Jackson Brebner-Russ closed the last two innings on the hill for the Saints - it was a good start for him in this role.

Particular mention goes to Mitch Lightbody - made some clutch plays defensively, came in and made a clutch out on the hill in a bases loaded jam and then scored the winning run - well done mate.

We move on now to play Glenelg in a double header next weekend - another great test for this group.

Hits - Arnold 3, Macbeth 2, Brebner-Russ, Nicholas, Holmes, Faehse, Lightbody

Division 3 (Coach: Darren Stewart)

Sturt 9 d Northern Districts 4

After some hitting from Norths we ended up 2-0 down at the end of the second. Some solid team hitting and aggressive base running in the third gave us a two run lead. The fourth saw Norths score two more equalising the game. After two quick outs, the fifth inning was started with a safe hit to right by Alex Hopton. An error in right field saw Alex score. Another error, followed by a walk and a hit by pitched ball left Jared Holland at the plate with loaded bases and two out. Except for the sound of a V8 revving in a drive way down the road, the packed Northern District stadium went silent. Holland takes a few then powers a shot to left field. Three runs score, all but securing the game. French takes the mound in the bottom of the fifth and shuts things down nicely. Overall another solid effort filled with good base running and team hitting. Well done Shane on the mound for the first 4 and Frenchy closing.

Special mention, Dylan Miels with two throws from left to home, had both cold, only getting one.

Hits: Miels 2, Holland 2, Hopton.

Division 4 (Coach: Dale Martens)

Sturt 9 d Northern Districts 1

A solid effort on the mound by Jordan Wayne saw him go 6 innings, give up only one run and to be honest threw more outs than a pitcher should have to. In saying that the infield managed to turn three double plays to save multiple scoring opportunities for Norths.

Strong hitting throughout the line up combined with sacrifices from Pat Burns and Jayke Wayne saw us take control of the game and end up comfortable winners. A great team effort all round.

Hits: Passmore 3, Martens 2, Lemon, Boundy, French, Jayke Wayne.

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)

Adelaide 12 d Sturt 7

We played our second game of the season after a bye last week and we were looking for our first win.

After a couple years in Tom (Tommy) Winter's ear we final got him out there to play with us. We also welcomed Craig (Chipy) Bickerstaff to the list and he was in the hot spot for the first half of the game.

Adrian (Fame) Hill started on the mound and after a few beers the night before was throwing hit me balls and Adelaide did that. It was the usual for us with them hitting the holes and we could not plug them, Adelaide had plated three runs before the final out. Our first at bat had Tommy under pressure to be our first runner, he watch the first over the plate and then his eyes lit up on the second pitch, it must have looked like a watermelon coming his way, a swing and before you know it his backside is back on the bench with the rest of us, our first out with a F3, Fame smokes one to centre, Chris (Daisy) Day and Chris (Smally) Small walk, Glenn (Doc) Young next up and hits a precision ball down left field an inch inside the line to score two runs for us before we are all out. 3 - 2 down after 1.

In the second Adelaide score another 3, and the error in this innings David (Reg) Lee at centrefield has a fly ball in the pocket of the glove only to pop out.

Our second at bat has Chipy up for his first one to be left watching the third strike over the plate and walk back with his tail between his legs and join Tommy still steaming from his first at bat. Nothing else to mention as we are all out with no score to add, 6 - 2 down.

Adelaide score one more in the third and we score another donut. 7 - 2 down.

Tommy to the mound, top of the fourth after he says his arm is feeling good, he holds Adelaide to no score and we have a chance to get back into the game.

Our fourth and Kris (Krispy) McArdle comes into the game, first at bat and he has a late swing to ground out to first, Tommy gets on base for the first time with a walk, Fame is safe with a wild throw before Daisy KC's and Smally grounds out to second. Score still 7 - 2 down.

Top fifth and Tommy holds Adelaide scoreless again.

Bottom of the fifth Doc K2', Mark (pop) Burns hits to right, Reg follows suit and hits to right, Michael (Stiffy) Hodges gets a walk, Krisby swing checks a slow roller back to the pitcher who throws Pop out at home, Tommy gets a nice single to centre and scores two runs before Fame grounds out for side away. Score now 7 - 4 down and we are coming back.

In the sixth, Tommy still on the mound, a walk and a couple of doubles and Adelaide score 3 before we get them all out.

Bottom sixth, Daisy hits to centre, Smally hits to right, Doc K2's, Pop walks and loads the bases, Reg hits to centre to score one, Stiffy hits to third to have Smally thrown out at home for the second out, Krisby up bases loaded and he is due, he check swings for a slow roller to second and the third out. Score 10 - 5 down.

Top seventh and we go to Reg, with an error we allow Adelaide to score 2 runs and make it 12 - 5 down.

Tommy leads off with a HBP, Fame gets one through short stop, Daisy K's, Smally double to centre to score 2, and unfortunately that was all she wrote, side away for a 12 - 7 loss.

A good game by both sides with a few laughs from us as usual.

Hits: 2 to Hill, Small (1D), Young, Lee, 1 to Winter, Day, Burns.

Division 7 (Coach: Phil Martin)

Sturt 8 Adelaide 6 at Sturt

It was déjà vu all over again at Normal Reserve as we got to play the Angels for the second week in succession after the late withdrawals of both the Northern District and Playford City teams from the division.

While we shared the points last week, we managed to hold them off this time 8-6 with Mick 'Mickey' Trlin and Adrian 'Fame' Hill doing great work on the mound in tandem with Brett 'Bretty' Mulryan, who also chipped in with three hits and three RBIs.

The infield of coach Phil 'Philthy' Martin, Justin 'JR' Ranford, Kingsley 'Butterball' Turner and Chris 'Hoops' Thompson kept the runners honest, with a bungled run down for the fourth out a particular comedic highlight….as was the moment when Butterball decided the best option for getting out of Hoops' way was to suddenly prostrate himself in front of our intrepid short stop like a fallen log - with predictable results.

Justin 'Prez' McKinley, Steve 'Spiely' Spiels, Rich 'Elvis' Carter and Anthony 'Big K' Kocza kept things pretty clean in the outfield, with Prez taking a particularly good running catch.

Our hitting was solid, as was our base running but the difference this week was our ability to protect our lead, and Fame gets a lot of credit for that with his work in relief of Mick.

Thanks to Sue for scoring, Fame for doubling up and Tredders for umpiring again.

U17/1 - Sturt 15 d Gawler 0

A very quick 75 minute game resulted in a resounding 15-0 win against a very young and inexperienced Gawler. Another shut out game from our pitchers combined with 12 hits and 3 opposition errors saw the Saints coast home.

Eight from 10 batters got hits today. Outstanding performances in amongst a terrific team effort were Harry Knuckey going 3 from 3, Liam Lucas 2 from 3, and Reed Stewart 2 from 4. Special mentions to Michael Sabatino and Chris Sandor getting their first hits for the season. Two innings were mercy and we only batted for 3 innings.

Defence was good again, Aussie dominated with 4K's in two innings and Tyrese did what all smart pitchers do - let the field do the work. Excellent double play from Ky and Reed snuffing out Gawler's only chance of a run with a smart 3-2-3 double play was the highlight of a tidy performance.

Thanks to Deb Hopgood for scoring, Scott Quinlan for umpiring and to all the parents who set the field today - good job.

U15/1 - Sturt 11 d Goodwood 10

A game for the ages played out on a cool, overcast Sunday afternoon at the Flinders University diamond as the Saints upended the favoured Goodwood Indians 11-10. The Saints fronted up as a young injury depleted unit looking to prove themselves against a Goodwood team brimming with charter team representatives from the past couple years. Against all odds, the bottom end of the Saints order ignited a two out last inning rally to fight back from a two run deficit and knock off the rival Indians.

After the Saints tried to gift the game to Goodwood in the first two innings via series of fielding miscues, the Indians took re-gifting to a new level dolling out 11 walks to hand the game back to a receptive Sturt team. Josh Vidale and Hamish Pickett combined to lead the boys to what was a truly consummate team victory with everyone from top to bottom contributing throughout the game and the game winning rally.

Josh was incredible on the mound throwing 63 of 92 pitches for strikes and working out of some tough jams with the help of sporadic timely fielding to minimise several Indian threats. On top of that he continued his hot streak at the plate going 2 for 4 to keep the Saints in the game early. Hamish went 3 for 4 with a first inning RBI double to left and some nifty glove work at third. The teams traded scoring opportunities throughout the game and heading into the bottom of the 6th, Goodwood led 10-8.

Our team of characters then began to show their character. The game winning rally started with 2 out walks to Joel Edwards and Charlie Durack followed by a hustle single to deep second by Lachlan Hammond to keep the game alive. Harry Hutton and Sam Stewart then walked to tie the game and a subsequent wild pitch to score Lachlan completed the most unlikely of victories. Good teams win when not at their best and this was a win that sent players, coaches and supporters home happy and optimistic with what can be achieved this season.

Thanks to Sally for scoring yet again and those parents who helped with field setup and take down.

Hits: Hamish Pickett 3 (2B), Josh Vidale, Nick Borrello 2 each, Lachlan Hammond 1

RBI: Hamish Pickett, Patrick Milewski, Nick Borrello, Charlie Durack, Harry Hutton 1 each

Little League 1 - Sturt (U13) 10 d Adelaide 3

After putting in a lot of effort on the track this week, the boys were able to play fundamental baseball to notch up our first dubya for the season. Not much defensive effort was required as one of the club's up and coming prospects, Robbie Brennan, hurled an ABSOLUTE PEARLER! Robbie had the opposition swinging like rusty gates on his way to throwing a 5 INNING CG NO HITTER! His "no-no" consisted of 5 inn, 63 pitches - 49 S, 14 B (77% b/s). To rub salt into Adelaide Angels' gaping wounds, every out recorded was a STRIKEOUT! Robbie's only blemish was a third inning BB, apart from that it was all about the Brennannihlator! (We chose to play the 6th despite not needing to and Robbie had changed position after 5).

Not only did we shine on the bump but we were also able to back it up at the dish. Tallying up our highest score for the season we hit double digits with ease. We had multiple players, with multiple knocks and multiple rib-eye's. A couple stand outs were our lead-off man, Harry Chaplin, setting the table with his aggressive approach; Hugo Ellery, continued to have infielders spooked by smashing line drives despite being the only little leaguer EVER to opt for the ol' lumber over the tin. Everyone's ABs have improved at the dish and we'll be looking to strengthen that during the week. GOOD WORK BOYS!

Little League 1 - Saints (U13) (Coach: Stan Warrilow)

Todays game was always going to be a tough one up against last years premiers.

We started with a run in the 1st innings thanks to Ryder picking a walk, then Spencer advancing him to 2nd base and then Ethan smashing a double.

The Rams hit back with a run of their own in the bottom of the 1st and we were tied 1-1.

The 2nd inning was looking to be tough as the first 2 hitters were retired in order but we managed to score another run thanks to some great hitting from Ryder and Spencer and a bit of luck thanks to a wild throw from Henley & Grange.

The Rams opened up in the bottom of the 2nd innings and scored 5 runs on the back of some great hitting.

The top of the 3rd was over in a flash as we went 3 up 3 down.

Ethan kept the Rams scoreless in the bottom of the 3rd with some great pitching and good back up from the field.

Unfortunately we didn't trouble the scorers in the top of the 4th either as a bit of luck fell the Rams way again and we were double played out of the inning.

The Rams opened up again and scored 5 more runs and we were unlucky not to have them out sooner but that's the way it goes.

Ethan Dawson was replaced on the mound by Spencer after throwing a fantastic game with 55 strikes and 28 balls for a total of 83 pitches.

Ethan pitched his heart out for us, well done buddy.

Spencer got the job done in the bottom of the 5th by not allowing the Rams to score a run and we were racing to the top of the 6th inning.

Samson started of the 6th with a crushing double and we managed to score another run thanks to a wild throw from the Henley infield.

The game was over by this time but we went out and fielded anyway to get some more practice.

Samson came on to pitch and kept the Rams scoreless doing a great job and getting some valuable time on the mound.

All up it was a great game with our pitchers doing a great job and some good back up from the field.

Hits - Ryder, Spencer, Emma, Ethan, Samson all 1 each

We had our first away game at West Torrens and our first win 11-10!

After a great Tuesdays training. (thanks Dutchy) All the wee men came out with there game faces on.

The boys had a good warm up with Mark and keen to start the game . From the first pitch we all could see the boys wanted to get some runs on the board, with some excellent hits and base running by every one on the team.

Even with a good start and getting a good few runs, we all had to field as good as we started with the bat. With some awesome pitching and catching, all the boy did a outstanding job in the out-field and in-field to keep West Torrens honest.

Well done boys what a great game!

Also thanks to every one that gave us a hand well Todd was away. Report by: Craig Bickerstaff

Thursday- East Torrens 11 d Sturt 4

Sunday- Sturt 1 lost to Kensington 11

A beautiful day to be back at Norman Reserve.

Fantastic to see the new uniforms on the field - they have come together really well and many thanks to all who helped organise these.

We were fortunate enough to have Matt Swilley throw the first 4 innings for us before he assumes pitching duties for the Adelaide Bite. He threw very well and was well backed up by the field.

The strong Kensington lineup kicked into gear after Matt left the hill and through some timely hitting they took the game away from us.

David Nicholas continues to be a shining light with the bat and Angus Roeger looks better and better every game that passes by!

Jackson Brebner Russ caught extremely well and showed enormous poise and control given his recent return from overseas.

Hits - Nicholas. Roeger, Holmes, Brebner-Russ, Faehse

We are back at home against Norths next week - time to get this season into gear!!

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)

B Grade 9-2 loss to Kensington

Once again Ky Hampton started on the hill, and again was brilliant. Unfortunately this week he wasn't backed up in the field. Too many errors and too many infield hits saw us down 9-0 after 3 innings and an hour of baseball.

With a little re group and one goal to win the second half of the game the boys finished of well the score 2 runs and keep Kensies scoreless.

Brodie Macbeth came back from two pitching stints with the 1s and did a great job to finish of the game strongly.

Once again our hitting was a little lacklustre but with such an inexperience side facing and import the boys battled and put together some quality at bats, but unfortunately this hard work didn't hit the scoreboard.

A couple of tough weeks for the boys, with a tough loss last week and a little bit of a touch up this week. however this is a long road and the boys are learning with each inning and each at bat. There's a lot of talent in this group and the wins will come.

Division 3 (Coach: Darren Stewart)

Goodwood 4 d Sturt 3

Coming up against Kensington for our first game of the season was always going to be a challenge. A word to the boys before the game set the tone for the day. Get on base, move em' round and bring em' in. Our first 3 innings at the plate were highlighted by two walks and a lightening stolen base by Hirsty. Our fourth saw us move a runner to third via a walk and an error.

A lead off walk in the fifth combined with some old school bunting and right side hitting gave us a runner at third. A nice hit to left field by Jayden Trembath scored the lumbering coach. Up to this point Shane Horne had Kensington's line up in tatters, his calm demeanour holding strong through Kensington's usual below average banter. Top of the sixth saw a lead off shot to right field by Horne followed by a stolen base. A team ground ball to the right side by Hirst moved Horney to third. A ground ball by young Austin McLure scored the run.

Tom Bartley in his first senior pitching appearance came in to start the bottom of the sixth, allowing only one run and picking up two strike outs. Top of the seventh and Powell was on base at second via an error, stole third and scored via and error. Coming into the bottom of the seventh we were three to one up. A couple of walks and a couple of hits saw Kensington take the lead and the game was called at four to three.

This game was a great example of how to manufacture runs when the bats are up against a quality pitcher. Well done to Shane (10 strikeouts) and Tom (2 strikeouts) for holding down the hill. An errorless day in the field was so incredibly helpful also. Overall, it was great to see Sturts Division Three team play a hard and close fort game (albeit a loss) against a quality opposition. Well done boys!

Hits: Horne 1, Trembath 1.

After our first loss and not scoring a run I put the boys through a grueling training on Wednesday night for a solid 2 hours and had them all fired up and ready to play, looking for our first win.

Unfortunately for us we have a bye this weekend.

We will have to wait for that first win, I will put them through another grueling training this week and harden them up.

Go The Mighty Saints!

Division 7 (Coach: Phil Martin)

Sturt 11 Adelaide 11 @ Adelaide

This was the one that got away!

After a lumpy start behind Mick 'Mickey' Trlin, we pulled ahead through some good hitting and aggressive baserunning with just about everyone contributing with the bat. Unfortunately, we couldn't back up Adrian 'Fame' Hill when he took to the mound and we let a late 11-7 lead turn into an 11-11 game. And then we went three up, three down in the last to end in a tie.

Despite that, it was another good team effort from all - we had plenty of positional changes and it was sad to see new boy Matthew 'Wazza' Warren go down with a hammy just after finding his groove with the bat. Steve 'Spielly' Spiels also swung well, as did Fame. Brett 'Bretty' Mulryan was solid again behind the plate, and his strong arm helped keep the runners honest. However, we weren't quite able to hold them when it mattered.

Thanks to Heather for scoring, to AJ for bench coaching and to Tredders for umpiring.

Under 17/1 (Coach: Mitch Lightbody)

Second round, first game at home on a beautiful Sunday morning at the magnificent Norman Reserve prepared by Jamie "Don Burke" Knuckey and a 10-0 mercy to the home side was the result.

The undefeated U17's continued their bright start to the season primarily on the back of three excellent performances -

  • a 5 innings 11K no hitter from Aussie McClure plus a

  • 4RBI's from 2AB's from the iceman Ky Hampton including a two run triple and monstering the opposition at the plate with the bat and

  • Yet another great day for Reed Stewart who continues his sparkling form with the bat going 2 from 3 including a double and RBI.

It was a solid team win over an inexperienced opposition team with contributions from everyone across the board in one shape or another. Fielding was good though Aussie didn't give them much to do and the batting had a crack putting the ball into play forcing errors from the opposition.

A very handy lefty from Norths struck out 5 of our batters and gave up just the 6 hits. We were gifted 7 walks and gave away just two combined with 5 errors from North's proved to be the difference. By no means a perfect win, but a positive contribution from everyone gave a good result.

Big thank you to the team parents for a great performance today setting up the field with special thanks to Deb Hopgood for scoring. Bad news is we get to do it again next week.

Sturt 14 Kensington 9

Wow! What a turnaround from last week in so many ways. The boys showed up at Kensington with a great attitude that was reflected in their play on the day. Sturt broke through for a win with a total team effort - from positions 1 to 9 all contributed with the bat and in the field to notch up the first win of the season.

Leading the way was Josh Vidale, both at the plate and on the mound, going 4 for 4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Josh started on the hill and showed he has the goods to be a workhorse of the staff over the course of the season. Charlie Durack gave us a jump start in the first with a leadoff walk and 3 hits later by Sam, Josh and Jonas the boys had opened up an early 3-0 lead.

The Saints pushed 4 across in the bottom of the third, batting around in the process. A highlight of the inning was Lachlan Hammond digging in for a 9 pitch at bat that culminated in his first hit of his short career through the gap to centerfield. Kensington subsequently fought back to tie the game at 7 all heading into the top off the 4th that set the stage for an exciting finish.

A fielding miscue by Kensington opened the floodgates and the boys scored the maximum 7 runs in the top of the inning. Jonas Garcia and Sam Stewart relieved Josh to close out the victory in style. What was most pleasing were great plays in the field by Hamish, gunning down a Cardinal batter from third to first in the 1st inning, the play of Joel Edwards in centerfield closing the gap on a couple hard hit balls to save an extra base and the overall play of Max Culp at the plate and in the field with his constant chatter in support of the pitcher and his teammates. Max's encouragement and engagement in the game is what the coaches are seeking from all players on game day and at training.

A superb team win that sets the tone for the coming weeks.

Hits: Josh Vidale 4 (2B), Jonas Garcia 2 (2B), Sam Stewart, Seb Steel, Hamish Pickett, Lachlan Hammond, Max Culp 1 each

U/13 Div.1 "Sturt" - Goodwood - 10 def. Sturt - 8

On Sunday, we played our first home game at Flinders against a formidable Goodwood Indians side. With ocean views and the sun beating down, the boys were in high spirits going into the game and, despite a couple of early runs, started the game with great energy. However, our fielding and poor pitch selection at the plate throughout the game let us down for the second week in a row.

Some stand-outs with the stick included Jake Mossman, Robbie Brennan and Jack Hutton, all with a couple of extra base knocks each. Robbie and Jack also helped out on the pimple both throwing the aggot well, with Robbie in particular hurling an exceptional 75% B/S ratio.

We still need a massive improvement in our basic baseball daily vitamins. Taking care of the baseball in the field in order to stop the bleeding during tough innings will be a big focus this week at training. Working on our plate discipline and pitch selection will also allow us to improve at the dish and keep ducks on the pond!

Next was Nic turn first time pitching he found it hard in his first innings but got back out on the bump on the second and showed what he was made of great job kid. Locky finished the game for us and throw fantastic but his mates didn't look after the ball out there. We are all learning to run the base well and getting some great hit. Keep at it guys and the truth will show. See you at the park.

Newsletter 12/10/15

Welcome to the 2015/16 baseball season! The season started off with a great Player Top presentation at the TA Hotel who are one of our sponsors this year. It was a real highlight to have one of our former players and current Gold Coast Sun player Sam Day present the playing tops! I am not sure that Sam knew what he was in for as our Senior Coach Tony Catt had prepared a series of questions for him which Sam handled very professionally and gave a great insight into what is required to be a professional sportsperson!

Unfortunately all our Senior teams went down on the weekend, however please note that Sturt will be playing at the new Diamond Sports Facility this Thursday night at 6.15 pm and again on Sunday at our first home game against Kensington which will commence at 3.00 pm.

For those of you new to the club, please join out Twitter feed, at Follow @sturt_baseball and our Facebook page!

The Sturt Baseball Club thanks all of our sponsors for their generous support. If you require further information on sponsorship, please contact our Sponsorship Manager Jeff Nicholas on 0419 824 324.

Division 1 (Coach: Tony Catt)

Goodwood 15 d Sturt 6

First up against Goodwood away was always going to be a great test for this group.

A big congratulations to Tyson Ottoway on his first A grade start. He had a big preseason and I expect his growth in the next 6 months to mirror the last year. We look forward to watching this over the summer.

Well done also to Damon Arnold on his first A grade start - he is a great talent and will benefit from every minute of playing senior baseball.

Welcome to Scott Quinlan from the US. Scott has been highly recommended to us by the ex Adelaide Bite Coach - Brooke Knight - for those that watched the game on Sunday will understand what Brooke was talking about! Scott is a utility that will pitch some innings for us this year. We all hope you enjoy your stay in Australia!

The game was a bit shaky from both sides early and through some great hitting (and Baserunning) from Scott Quinlan, Dave Nicholas and Will Wirth we were tied at 6 through 4 innings. After that we failed to add to the scoreboard but continued to leak runs against us.

Our pitching was below par and this needs to be something that is rectified very quickly. I know the boys will go away and make the adjustments necessary to improve this.

Offensively we had a solid game with plenty of productive at bats and defensively we need to work on a couple of things to ensure we are not giving runs away.

Hits - Quinlan 3, Nicholas 2 (HR), Lightbody 2, Holmes, M. Macbeth, B Macbeth, Wirth.

Errors - 2 Pitching - Nicholas 4 innings, 7 runs, 110 (42 strikes) ; B Macbeth 4 innings, 8 runs, 97 (49 strikes)

The great thing about sport is the next game isn't that far away to move on and move forward - we are playing East Torrens this Thursday night down at Diamond Sports (West Beach) under lights. It promises to be a great game in the new facility.

Make sure you come down and support the group.

Division 2 (Coach: Tom Winter)

Goodwood 6 d Sturt 5

Well the boys lost a heartbreaker today! going down 6-5 to a walk off pass ball. We were probably the better side for a 110mins of the 2 hour game, but when your starting side consists of only 3 guys over 18 there were so many positives to take away considering the experience of the opposition.

Ky Hampton made his first B Grade start and was nothing short of brilliant, for a kid that only turned 15 a week ago, he showed composure and maturity beyond his age going 4 2/3 giving up only 3 runs, well done mate. Damon Arnold then came on in a tough position to finish off the game for us.

Tom Faehse was clearly the stand out!

with the bat picking up 2 of the 3 hits we got and 4 stolen bases. The boys can learn a lot from the way Tom plays the game, his attitude and desire to do what ever it takes to win is a credit to him and good to watch. We lacked a little on the hitting side and failed a couple of times to execute when required which ultimately cost us.

Special mention to Reed Stewart for his first B grade start behind the dish. He only found out Thursday that he'd be making his first start and certainly showed that he's not out of his depth in this grade, good job. Also to Luke Peters and Harry Knuckey for making there first starts in the 2s.

Hold your heads up boys, young side with lots of talent and we proved we can match it with a side that will be up there come end of the season.

Bring on Kensi's next week.

Postponed due to Masters to be played as soon as can be arranged by the League

Division 4 (Coach: Dale Martens)

Goodwood 5 d Sturt 2

Division 5 (Coach: Chris Small)

Henley & Grange 12 d Sturt 0

Well what a way to start the new season. Our game was scheduled for a home game at Flinders with the 3's and 4's playing at Sturt, with a late message to say the 3's had postponed their match I moved quickly to have our match moved to Sturt thus also getting an SABL Umpire.

So we turn up to one of the best grounds in the league to play. We have a few out because of the masters and so do H&G. Missing our starting pitcher and our second pitcher playing but not pitching because of over pitching in the masters we are still hopeful, H&G turn up with 2 regular players and the rest of the side made up of U19's, we were in trouble.

First innings and with Brandon Weber filling in for us and on the mound he struggled to find the strike zone and was replaced early in the first, the chant went up from left field 'bring on the Reginator' 'bring on the Reginator', I turn to look at leftfield to see who is chanting this and with out warning David 'Reg' Lee starts the run in, yes we went to the Reginator and he did a good job. He allowed one more run before we finished the first innings to be 5 down. e held them in the second for none runs but got tired in the third and gave up 5 more. Stuart Gardiner took over an over the next two innings they scored another 2 runs.

We also welcomed a couple of new players to the Div 5's one being Kris 'Macca' McArdle playing centrefield and the other Michael Hodges playing rightfield.

Macca at centrefield had a fly ball hit to him and he came steaming into it only to stop just as the ball bounce in front of him, nothing but laughter from the gallery watching, mainly family and friends. After a few years away from the game he was, must I say, frustrated with his batting.

Michael did not get a ball at rightfield, we moved him into second late in the game and he made an out to first. He got bat to ball with both his plate appearances but was caught both times.

H&G had a young lad throwing for them and for us he was throwing gas and we struggled only getting 4 safe hits for the day and we did not plate a run over the 5 innings.

Hopefully we will pick ourselves up and dust off and get a win in a couple of weeks as we have a bye this weekend.

At the end of it we had fun for our first game back even though we lost we can only go up from here, well I hope anyway.

Pitchers: Weber 42pitches for 13stikes, 29balls, 7BB, 1K2. Lee 74pitches, 36strikes, 38balls, 5BB, 3K's, 1HPB, Gardiner 31pitches, 20strikes, 11balls, 0BB, 2K's, 1 HPB

Hits: Glenn 'Doc Young 2, Wallace 'Gromit' Long 1, Brandon Weber 1

Go the Saints

Division 7 (Coach: Phil Martin)

Southern Districts 13 d Sturt 4

A tough way to start our new campaign against a disciplined Hawks team who didn't put a foot wrong all day. We let their pitcher throw the whole game and only got a few hits against him. New boys Steve 'Spiely' Spiel and Mick 'Oh Mickey You're So Fine, You're So Fine You Blow My Mind Hey Mickey" Trlin were brave on the mound, and Brett "Bretty" Mulryan was a rock behind the plate but their batters seemed able to bloop, flare and line their way to runs.

Our outfield of Justin 'Prez' McKinley, Justin 'JR' Ranford, Matt 'Chewy' Chenoweth/Anthony 'Big K' Kocza saw more of the ball than the infield of Kingsley 'Butterball' Turner, Phil Philthy' Martin, Chris 'Hoops' Thompson and Brian 'Screwball' Emmett. There was some rust among us but we still managed to have fun along the way.

Big thanks to Rich 'Elvis' Carter for base coaching (and bringing in a late ribbie) and to Heather for scoring.

Hits:Trlin 2 (2 RBI), Martin 1, Emmett 1, Turner 1 (1), Chenoweth 2, Carter 1 (1), Mulryan 2, Thompson 1

Pitching: Spiel 35 balls, 23 strikes, 1K Trlin 28 balls, 41 strikes, 4Ks

Under 17/1 (Coach: Mitch Lightbody)

Sturt                     0 2 2 0 1 2 7
Southern Districts 0 0 0 1 1 3 5

Representing Sturt Baseball Club Under 17 for Opening Day Season 2015.16 were Andrew Brennan, Ky Hampton, Dylan Hopgood, Tyrese Kimotho, Harrison Knuckey, Liam Lucas, Austin McClure, Luke Peters, Michael Sabatino, Chris Sandor and Reed Stewart. A cold misty morning greeted the Saints as they took on Southern Districts at Peregrine Park for the opening game at the very early time of 9:30am. With rookie coach Mitch Lightbody leading the way the Saints got home with the chocolates and squeezed out a 7-5 win. Not one for the ages but as a first game there was a lot to like and naturally a lot to improve on.

The statistics told a contrasting story of the Saints taking their chances. Outhit 6-7, stranding just 4 runners versus 10 for Souths, winning strike out battle 11-9, losing the earned runs 2-4 the difference in the end was that we put the ball into the field more often forcing the mistakes and our pitchers were able to tidy up the messes they got themselves into and in the finish we never relinquished the lead.

Leading the offence were Reed and debut player Liam who both had great days with the bat going two from three and both picking up an RBI. Hits to fellow debut boy Dylan who hit a smashing line drive double to left field and Tyrese who helped himself to a hit and an RBI

Highlights in the field included Dylan's rainmaker foul ball catch at third and the quality work from Michael -Austin -Reed hosing the runner at the plate bringing the near capacity crowd wrapped in blankets and hoodies to their feet. Not quite but it stopped the chattering teeth for a moment.

Pitching was a mixed bag and it's to be expected at this time of the year. Austin picked up 7K's , Luke 4K's but both gave away 4 walks apiece. Having said that the pitching between the teams was very even with our lads just shading the opposition and collecting the win.

Round one and the win ledger is in the positive and we'll take it. The spirit in the dugout was good with plenty of chatter and as long as the boys continue to listen, learn and enjoy their baseball we'll have a good season regardless of the result. Special thanks to David everywhere' Lightbody for scoring.

Under 15/1 - Sturt (Coach: Wallace Long)

Glenelg 9 Sturt 1

A last minute scheduling change had Sturt travel to Glenelg to take on last year's fellow grandfinalists Glenelg at a Patawolonga pong-free Anderson Reserve. Glenelg, with three returning Adelaide Wave representative players, are likely to be among the benchmark teams of the competition and the opening round was always going to be a difficult proposition for the young and inexperienced Saints.

Nick Borrello turned in a solid effort as our starting pitcher, having had minimal work on the hill in the lead-up to Opening Day. Nick fanned six batters in his two innings of work so the heat is there when zeroed in. He'll be one of our mainstay pitchers this year and a few more bullpens will sharpen things up. Great effort out of the gate, Nick. Josh Vidale relieved and threw three very solid innings in relief, limiting the Tigers to 2 runs over three innings.

The game eventually morphed into The Patrick Milewski Show with the opening act seeing Patrick crank a full count pitch to deep rightcentre for an RBI double that drove in Jonas Garcia in the second inning for the Saints only run. Patrick followed up defensively in the third inning by an unorthodox right field to first base putout that had the bench thinking anything was possible. The closing act was a couple back-to-back spectacular catches in right field, the first ranging to his right to spear an overhead screamer off the bat of young gun Joe Gluyas that left all in attendance screaming for more. In response to demands for an encore, Patrick snared a catch running to his left to close the book on Glenelg send Saints supports into raptures.

Despite the loss, there were a lot of good signs from the game as the team sets sail on the rest of the season. With a full complement of players at the first game against a high quality team, balancing playing time with the potential number of innings played out was always going to be a challenge. That we didn't quite get it right this time around likely vindicates the rotating roster system to be implemented from here on out.

All in all a very credible effort by our guys against a high quality opponent. Hats off to Glenelg for their sportsmanship throughout the game and enabling us to play-on to get everyone a plate appearance - they are a class outfit.

Lots to work on at training but lots of positive signs to build on for the rest of the year.

Hits: Patrick Milewski 2B, Sam Stewart

RBI: Patrick Milewski

Little League 1 - Sturt (U13) (Coach: Paul Mildren)

The U/13 'Sturt' team had a difficult task for Round 1 of the regular season, having to travel to East Torrens to face a talented and experienced squad. After a sleepy start and some off-season cobwebs still lingering on the bats, the boys put together some great AB's and showed some aggression at the plate. A stand out with the stick was Jake Mossman, who got the team rolling with a couple of solid knocks, showing that his hard work with the State softball team has been paying off.

Our two pitchers worked fast and challenged the opposition hitters, gaining some valuable mound time that was lacking from the pre-season schedule. Robbie Brennan started the game with Jack Hutton following him in relief with a strong showing. With a little more help from the field our pitchers will be looking to work more efficiently in future games. With a few focus areas to work on the Sturt boys will look to improve before next week's game.

Well our first game was at Sturt it was little bit wet on the foot but game on! We played Goodwood both teams start slow with the bats because of some great pitching from Spence, Darcy, Samson & Lachlan. We had a great catch from Jack at left field and fantastic hitting with Molly(mo) 3, Spence 2, Samson 2, Thornton and Nic 1. Thanks to Stan the duck for umpirng and S Kelsey for scoring and the Dad's that did some base coaching for me. Still lots to work on guys see you at the park next week.

Little League Sturt (U11) (Coach: Todd Hartnett )

Glenelg 9 d Little League Sturt (U11) 3

Sunday's game represented the first game of the season also the first actual game for most of the boys on the squad. The boys came out eager, smiling and gave it go on a cloudy day at the Flinder's Uni Field.

The first inning showed great promise as the boys hit the field on defence with Zach on the mound and Myles behind the plate. Glenelg started with a double but the boys were able to leave the runner stranded and got the following three batters out in order. We then grabbed our bats and the first two batters reached first safely with two good base hits from Myles and Magnus. Unfortunately, The Tigers were not to be out done in the field and recorded a strike out and two fielding outs to end the inning leaving us at 0-0 after the first.

The second inning got away from us on defence. Zach struck out the first batter but then Glenelg was able to put up four runs on several hits and a couple walks. Zach hit his 40 pitch maximum and Harry came in to pick up the pitching duties and record two strike outs to end the top half of the second. Once at bat we were able to score a single run after a hit by Ciaran put him at first and his teammates moved him around to cross the plate for the first run of the season before Glenelg was able to shut us down.

The third was much like the second. Harry was hitting the target as the pitcher and The Tigers were able to get their bats on the ball. They put two more runs on the board before Harry got a couple strikeouts and hit his 40 pitch maximum. Thomas came in for his first time pitching giving up the final three runs to end the inning at the five run maximum. Kale played behind the plate showing great courage and talent for keeping the ball in front of him. The bottom of the third the boys showed some resolve and scored two more runs on hits by Thomas and Ciaran and a couple more walks.

Although we left the field having given up 9 runs while scoring only 3, the boys showed some good skill and toughness. Given the short pre-season training session and positive attitude the boys showed I have great hope that with a little more practice we will soon be able to limit the opposition scoring and do more of it ourselves. I saw a lot of smiles and great effort on the part of The Saints.

Excellent work Boys!
