Sturt Tee Ball All Stars - Series Summary 2007-08

The Sturt Tee Ball All stars were due to have their final round 4 on Sunday 16 March, but unfortunately the record run of hot spells has again caused its cancellation.

(this round had already been postponed once and with Easter, holidays and impending winter sport commitments a rescheduling wasn’t possible)

So! An unfortunate end to a great season. On count back of wins and losses, Sturt’s 4 year winning streak has come to an end, with Kensington taking out the trophy for 2007/08.

However, the squad should take great pride in their performance throughout the season – it is particularly satisfying to hear the constant comments from other coaches, parents and members of the clubs of the visible improvement each and every player has shown during the year – I look forward to watching their development up through the Sturt baseball ranks!

I’d like to take this opportunity to record my thanks for the terrific support from all the parents of the tee-ballers with scoring, equipment, umpiring etc. – of particular note Andrew Johnston and David Brooks who have both given a great amount of time and support to the All Stars – and to Sturt Teeball generally over the years.

It’s particularly satisfying to see how many All Stars are now playing in the higher age groups…may it continue!

Again, our thanks to Mark Goldsworthy and Jock Gilbert Real Estate for their sponsorship over the years!

I would also like to advise that Glenn Young has kindly agreed to take on the role as All Stars coach for 08-09 – over the years he has been a tireless supporter and coach of the regular Tball teams and I am sure will do a fantastic job with our representative side! For those who aren’t aware, Tee Ball is played on Sunday mornings at Waite Uni grounds from October through to March and is an ideal team sport for boys and girls aged 5 to 11 years…. Do get involved if you can – President Brett Tucker and his committee would welcome your involvement and support! See www.sturtteeball.org for details.

All the very best for an enjoyable year!

Note from SABL regarding Junior Grand Finals this weekend

Baseball SA is concerned about the high temperatures forecast this weekend.

We have contacted our Insurance Company and they advised that the risk management provisions we have in place and our logical assessment of the weather conditions of when our games will be played and the playing rules they are played under are satisfactory for their needs.

We have researched the issue and the minimum temperatures on Saturday and Sunday are forecast for 20 and 21 degrees respectively. The likely temperatures at 9.00am are 22 and 23 degrees with them rising to low 30’s by 11.00am on both days.

Therefore the Junior Grand Finals will be played as follows:

The games will start at 9.00am. All games will be played as per the Playing Rules and Conditions starting on Page 12 of the Program Book.

All games will be played over two hours or to a result. The 5, 7 and 9 runs per inning rules apply. Mercy rules apply.

If a game is tied at 11.00am it should be played out to a result. Umpires and club officials are to ensure that suitable water and shade is available for all participants.

Umpires and officials are also advised that should an even innings be completed within 10 minutes of 11.00am game will be called providing a result has been obtained.

We wish all teams a successful weekend.

Possibility of cancellation of Junior Grand Final Games this Sunday

Junior grand finals will be cancelled if the forecast temperature at 7am the morning of Sunday the 9th March is 37 degrees or above as broadcast on Radio 5AA (1395am).

BaseballSA’s contingency plan is to play these games at the same time next weekend!

In the unlikely event that the temperature is again an issue, BaseballSA will negotiate with clubs to ensure all games are played on either Saturday or Sunday morning next weekend to minimize player exposure to high temperatures.

Operations Coordinator

Coaching Accreditation Courses

The SABL are making available both Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching Accreditation Courses

The SABL indicate that they believe the ABF will make it mandatory for all club coaches – From Senior Division 1 to Little League Minor Division - to hold Level 1 Accreditation for season 2008/09

This is certainly a big ask and the first I have heard of it as your President. Our Senior and Junior Committees will discuss the implications of this as I believe it will be very difficult to achieve with such short notice.

The Level 1 course has both theory and practical components and can be done in modules.

Further information on the Level 1 and Level 2 courses are available at: Baseball SA

SBC welcomes Federal Labor Support

Media Release from Sturt Baseball Club
Issued:16/10/07

Sturt Baseball Club has welcomed the support of the Federal Labor Party in its ongoing fight to continue playing at Norman Reserve, its home ground of more than 45 years.

Senator Kate Lundy, Shadow Minister for Sport, together with Nicole Cornes, ALP candidate for Boothby, tonight announced that if elected Labor would provide $20,000 to the Sturt Baseball Club to assist with the erection of safety nets to reduce the risk to the public of errant baseballs leaving the ground, and also to provide urgently needed baseball equipment.

Due to a recent ruling made by Mitcham Council, no games from U/16 to senior level can be played at the ground until these nets are erected.

President Phil Robinson said the Club was extremely grateful for the promise of these funds, and in particular thanked Mrs Cornes, who has kept in regular contact with him since the Club's struggle became public.

"On behalf of the Club I would like to thank Mrs Cornes for securing Labor support for the home of our important community sporting organisation, a proud club of 99 years with over 300 members," Mr Robinson said.

"This is a real coup for the Sturt Baseball Club, and one that we never expected. After a period of uncertainty things are really looking up for us. We were already pleased with the positive outcome of a meeting earlier this month with Mitcham Council, where they agreed to pay half the cost of the nets, and this is another big step for us."

Mr Robinson said he hoped that the nets would be installed in the next week, in order that the first senior game would be played on the weekend of Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October 2007.

Federal Labor announces support for Sturt Baseball Club

Media Release from Senator Kate Lundy

A Rudd Labor Government will make a contribution of up to $20,000 to the Sturt Baseball Club to erect netting and improve equipment and safety at Norman Reserve in Mitcham.

Shadow Minister for Sport, Recreation, Health Promotion and Local Government, Senator Kate Lundy and Federal Labor Candidate for Boothby, Nicole Cornes delivered the good news at the club this evening.

All Sturt Baseball Club teams from under 16's up to seniors were prevented from using the Norman Reserve for the upcoming season following concerns from local residents that balls were escaping the park into nearby residential areas.

"Norman Reserve has been the home ground for the Sturt Baseball Club for years and the facility is important to both the club and the local community - I knew we had to resolve the issues to ensure the club could continue to play there.

The Sturt Baseball Club has over 300 members and is one of South Australia's oldest baseball clubs. It was formed in 1908.

The funding will contribute to:

  • Perimeter netting to prevent balls from exiting the ground and allow games to be conducted at the facility;

  • Batting nets to ensure that batters can practice in a safe environment; and

  • Baseball equipment.

Nicole Cornes deserves a great deal of credit for helping to secure this support for such an important community facility.

Nicole has been a strong and vocal advocate for Sturt Baseball Club to ensure that the club was not forced out of its home at Norman Reserve where it has been since 1961.

Labor understands the pressures community sporting clubs are under. We want to make sure that they receive the support they need to provide opportunities for our communities to be active.

"We know that sport and recreation plays such an integral part in the social fabric of our community, I am proud to be part of the Labor team that recognises the importance of investing in our local community infrastructure," Nicole Cornes said.
